Magnesium and our well-being A less known role of magnesium is its relationship with the immune system. Research indicates magnesium also helps with our immune response alongside supporting a healthy nervous system. Autumnal change Magnesium is an ideal option to help support calm, relaxation and a restful sleep, as we settle down with shorter days and darker winter evenings ahead. Autumn is, for many of us, a chance to restore and recharge, which is vital for our well-being and to maintain wellness. Magnesium is an all-important mineral that is needed for everyday health but staying well during winter for many is often at the top of the priority list. As the weather cools and the seasonal change suddenly arrives, with shifting temperatures and a natural surge in winter bugs, it can impact on immunity and our general health.

Wild for salmon oil It is well known that we need Omega oil for our general health and well-being.The only way to get enough omega oil, especially the highly valued Omega-3 is from our diet.

SOLGAR Wild Alaskan Full Spectrum Omega Unfortunately most of us don’t get enough or get the right balance of these oils. When we are deficient in omega oils, our skin can become dry, scaly or bumpy, we might experience joint stiffness, mood swings and brain fog. Some people opt for plant based Omega-3 sources such as flax or chia seeds. Without realizing these choices are poorly converted in the body with less than 5% Omega-3 becoming bioavailable. One type of fish oil outshines the rest with a higher level of DHA; it is wild salmon oil. Fish oil contains two types of omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA. Ordinary fish oils contain a 3:2 ratio of EPA: DHA, but wild salmon oil has both EPA and DHA and it is higher in DHA. Wild salmon oil has a different essential fatty acid profile to ordinary fish oil – it contains the full spectrum of essential fatty acids. These other omega fats – 5 through to 9, perform a variety of functions and help to contribute to our overall healthy balance of essential fatty acids. They also help contribute to supporting heart health, balanced blood sugar, healthy skin, healthy cell structure and growth, restful sleep, and a healthy immune system.

SPECIAL OFFER $60 AT CHS STORES*

Solgar Wild Alaskan Full Spectrum Omega: ••  Pure salmon oil, sustainably wild caught is from a MS Certified fishery. ••  Undergoes testing and processes not only for mercury but other heavy metals. ••  Not diluted with other fish or vegetable oils. ••  Contains natural sourced mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, clary sage oil, thyme oil are to ensure oil freshness. ••  Sustainable packaging, a coloured glass bottle to ensure light protection. ••  Natural source of EPA and DHA plus Omegas 5, 6, 7 & 9. ••  Two softgel capsules provides 2400 mg of wild alaskan salmon oil per day. ••  Provides 5 µg of vitamin D3 and astaxanthin 20 µg per serve. In addition wild salmon oil has a natural source of vitamin D and antioxidant astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is powerful carotenoid pigment that can help fight free radicals, supporting skin, eye and brain health. Vitamin D helps support a healthy immune system, mood balance and calcium absorption. Not all salmon is equal. The Omega-3 oil content can vary depending on what salmon eat. Farmed salmon eat man-made feed, often made from fish meal, soy, corn and vegetable oils thus their Omega-6 ratio to Omega-3 is much higher. Wild salmon are free to swim the cold, pristine clean waters of Alaska and choose a natural diet, which is almost exclusively based on astaxanthin-rich plankton. Thus giving a better nutritional profile to the omega oil and has become more highly prized than farmed salmon oil. So go wild! Kick-start your

stress-busting exercise journey Personal Trainers and Health Coaches Renee Norman and Jenna Smith from Real Health NZ share their advice on starting up a realistic exercise regime.

Congratulations. If you’re reading this, then chances are you’re motivated to get that beautiful body of yours moving and to feel less stressed. In today’s demanding world, stress is the norm, and more people are living in the ‘stressed zone’. We all know it affects everything in our lives, from our energy to our sleep, and we don’t give the best of ourselves to our family, friends or work. The good news is that starting any form of exercise regime is a massive stress buster. The better news is it doesn't have to require long runs or hours at the gym to reap the benefits. Whether you’re just starting (never exercised before) or starting again (we’ve all been there) here are our top three tips to kick-start your new exercise regime.

TIP #1: Ditch the all or nothing attitude Exercise doesn’t need to be time consuming or complicated, nor does it require the latest gear or an expensive gym membership. There are just as many benefits in hitting the pavement, the local park or even your living room. Time and time again we set ourselves up for failure by jumping into challenging programmes. We’re all busy with fivepage to-do lists, so set realistic goals to begin with and embrace the ‘something is better than nothing’ approach. Commit to a few walks a week and take up incidental exercise, like opting for the stairs over the lift. The more you’re able to experience success, the more momentum you’ll gain. Then slowly move the benchmark out.

TIP #2: Get your mindset right If you’re keen to build exercise into your life, one of the first things you need to do is get your head in the game. It’s essential to develop a positive mindset around exercise because it’s easy to put in the too-hard basket, especially in the early days. Rather than thinking about exercise as a chore, focus on the satisfaction you’ll feel at the end of each walk or workout. Remember that everyone has to start somewhere and don’t be discouraged if you feel sore, have a rest, or go at a slow pace. As long as you are moving, you are doing great.

TIP #3: Know your ‘why’ Starting an exercise regime is easy. Sticking to it is a different ball game. That's why we believe your ‘why’ is the key to long-term success. When we have a ‘why’, it’s much easier to stay motivated and committed to exercise. Your ‘why’ will keep you coming back. It might be that you want to have more energy, lose weight, reduce stress, or be a better role model for your family. Write it down somewhere and read it when self-doubt or excuses surface. Remember, there is no wrong ‘why’. It just needs to have meaning.

Well-being:

one size doesn’t fit all

Amy Willoughby — life coach, writer and creative at Be and Bloom, enlightens us on the meaning of ‘well-being’ by looking at its three elements of mind, body and soul. By understanding well-being in these areas, we can learn to nurture our needs.

10

Living in such a time of distraction, noise, and rush, we’re frequently juggling so many balls. Often one of the first balls to be dropped is our personal well-being. When we neglect to consciously tend to our own well-being and forget to take time to feel grounded, contented, and taken care of, we’re open to overwhelm, stress, and anxiety creeping into our lives.

Our mind Allowing ourselves time to download the overwhelm, to remove the brain fog, and to create clarity helps to relieve the pressure on our minds. Whether it’s through a conversation with a trusted loved one or a trained professional, or writing down thoughts in a journal, the act of ‘downloading’ reduces noise and encourages calm.

Some ideas to nurture your needs and tend to your own personal well-being are: Play Explore those things that bring you happiness, whether it’s making music, creativity through craft, art, painting, writing, learning something new or perhaps discovering new places. Take the time to pursue those things you love, that spark joy, and light you up. When looking after your well-being, one size does not fit all, so go on your own journey and discover what it means to you.

Mindfulness has become a popular practice because it offers us space to connect with our breath, calm down our parasympathetic nerves, and signal to our body that there’s no need to be in a state of stress, which produces cortisol and adrenaline that may lead to shallow breathing. Mindfulness means allowing ourselves the time to be still, observe our thoughts, and welcome calmness and clarity.

Our body Physical well-being is as much about movement as it is about fuelling ourselves with nutritious, wholesome foods. Do what works for you, and find an exercise that makes you feel good: whether it’s yoga, running, swimming, dance or another activity. Set realistic targets and create habits and routines that fit in with your lifestyle.

Nature

Our soul Soul is a very personal component of well-being, and it’s often about allowing ourselves to feel connected at a deeper level. Creativity, play, and doing things we really love moves us into a ‘flow’ state. It’s that sweet spot, where we’re so engrossed in an activity that time flies by. Tend to your soul’s desires, whatever that means to you, and listen to those calls to connect with the things you love. Well-being is an all-encompassing subject but aligning with our unique needs and desires as an individual is a great place to start. The ingredients differ for each of us, but the common goal is creating a sense of calm, contentment and connection to our being. It’s about filling our cups for ourselves.

Journal

Ground yourself in nature; slip off your shoes, feel the earth beneath your feet, and spend some time being present and mindfully observing your surroundings. Research shows green spaces provide multiple health benefits, including boosting our immune systems, reducing stress levels, improving our mental health, lowering blood pressure and helping to increase our productivity.

Set a timer for ten minutes, download your thoughts and let your subconscious speak through writing. Putting pen to paper can be cathartic, and it offers an opportunity to improve your mood by releasing, processing and regulating your emotions. Writing helps us gain clarity and clear brain clutter.

Meditate Move Find what works for you — pop on a favourite song and dance, explore a favourite outdoors spot, walk, find a yoga workout via YouTube, join a local fitness group, or meet up with a friend to exercise with and offer support with personal health goals.

Make time to be still, connect back with your breath, and simply be. There are multiple apps that can assist with making meditation a regular practice, including Calm and Insight Timer. Meditation can enhance our self-awareness, reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality and increase focus and positivity.

The pure

benefits

Ben Warren shares what took him from golfer to leading nutritional expert, and how holistic health is a philosophy to live by.

North Londoner Ben Warren's knack for sport was evident from a young age. First, it was football, and then it was a talent for golf. He progressed in the latter and was awarded a scholarship to the University of South Carolina to play, and study experimental psychology. Going pro was on the cards, but a back injury rerouted his path to coach. After moving to New Zealand with his Kiwi wife, Ben headed to a course on golf biomechanics as his injury persisted. It was there a lady commented that Ben had a twist in his pelvis, scoliosis in the spine, and his traverse abdominals weren’t firing. Already working with top physios, it wasn’t new information to him, but it struck a chord that she could tell all this from his posture. “She then said that she thought it looked like it was driven by a food intolerance, and she thought it was dairy,” Ben says. “I was intrigued but still wanted to confirm with a test. Sure enough, I took the IgG and IgA Elisa test, which looks at

12

the immune response to 96 foods, and it showed I had a severe immune reaction to dairy.”

“Then began the journey of creating a comprehensive multivitamin specifically designed for New Zealanders.”

After ditching the dairy, the asthma he’d been suffering from since he was six years old began to clear up. “It turned off the desire to hit golf balls and turned on the desire to understand the human body, to help people understand the impact of diet and lifestyle on human health.”

If there’s one thing Ben wants you to walk away knowing, it’s that everyone should be taking a high-quality multivitamin like BePure One, along with a fish oil like BePure Three. “It’s virtually impossible to get even the minimum nutrient requirement we need from our diet. This is simply because the nutrients aren’t in food anymore,” Ben says. “To get everything we need from our diet it would include brazil nuts, beef liver and sardines every day, on top of an incredible dietary regime.”

“This chance encounter changed the direction of my life.” Fuelled by the need to access nutrients missing from the New Zealand soil, Ben used his clinical knowledge and experience to design BePure, launching the first product in 2010 after years of research. “I was recommending eight different products just to cover people’s base nutrient requirements,” Ben says.

When it comes to health, Ben’s philosophy is holistic. “It includes our mind, body, emotions, spirituality, diet and lifestyle,” he says. “When you get the right mix of all these pieces of the puzzle, the body naturally wants to express the best health.”

“The BePure essentials are part of my life. It’s not a job but an extension of who I am.”

Living in Hawke's Bay, he leads by example too. “I live on a 15-acre organic, permaculture farm where we grow 80 percent of the food we eat,” Ben says. “I’m conscious of what food I put in my body, use good quality products, prioritise sleep, and manage my stress.” Two of the biggest challenges facing society today are mental health and stress. Ben says it’s a reflection of a multitude of factors, like lack of sleep, a sedentary lifestyle, and circadian disruption. But food has a significant role to play too. “Most of the middle aisles of the supermarket aren’t food,” he says. “Food has significantly changed through farming techniques and hybridisation. We weren’t eating that 100 years ago. I believe that eating wholefoods that are right for you and as fresh as possible will give people their best expression of health.” As reported by the New Zealand Health Survey, the percentage of adults with mental health issues has increased by between 150 and 200 percent since 2006. With the number of New Zealanders

suffering from depression, anxiety, mood and bipolar disorders only growing, Ben says, “what we are doing is not working.” His advice to those facing stress or any mental health issues is to take stock of what’s amiss in your life and take control of what you can. That’s your sleep, diet and nutrient levels, along with mindfulness practices like meditation and diaphragmatic breathing to control your autonomic nervous system (a branch of the nervous system controlled automatically or unconsciously). The online BePure Health Appraisal Questionnaire online can also act as a great starting point in highlighting any systems that need support. Most of us know the effect our diet and lifestyle have on our overall health and well-being. We especially feel it with a bad sleep, a few drinks, takeout food and a general lack of exercise. “Use this knowledge and information to prioritise putting the necessary habits in place to function optimally,” he says. “Take responsibility for your own health and reap the benefits.”

Beat winter blues naturally with fish oil, herbs and adaptogens Every year when the weather starts to become colder we find ourselves sapped of energy, irritable, finding it difficult to concentrate and generally feeling a bit under the weather. It’s still not certain what causes the winter blues but it’s a real condition that had been linked to a lack of sunlight, colder weather, and less physical exercises all combining to create a detrimental effect on our body’s chemistry.

FREE SAMPLE INSTORE TODAY*

Natural vs Synthetic Supplements? Natural supplements are from whole food sources whereas synthetic supplements are made artificially in a factory process. It’s unclear how well synthetic supplements are absorbed in the body but research shows the human body will use nutrients best when it is in a whole food form.

BIOTRACE Biotrace Cogni Complex, Bio Adapt, Fish Oil Omega-3 Plus There are lots of ways we can lift our spirits in the colder months and beat the winter blues. One of the best ways is through exercising and getting lots of sunlight while the sun is still out. Winter comfort foods such as pizzas and pies provide short term relief but we often feel more sluggish later. Instead, we should eat more complex carbohydrates such as spinach, courgettes, broccoli and lentils. However, with our daily schedules keeping us busy and the sun setting by the time we get home, it’s hard to keep up an exercise regime and eat healthy all the time. For when we can’t, that’s where supplementation comes in and can help, especially natural supplements from food sources. Fish oil is vital to supporting our brain health and our mood since healthy brain and nerve cells depends on omega-3 fatty acids. Many of us don’t consume the recommended amount of seafood in our diet that are essential to our health due to various reasons such as not liking the fishy taste. Biotrace Fish Oil Omega-3 Plus has a fresh lemon taste with a low fish odour and is one of the best sources of uncontaminated fish oils rich in omega-3 available today. Biotrace Fish Oil is CO2 filtered and sourced sustainably from Icelandic herring rather than deep sea fish contaminated with heavy metals.

BioTrace Cogni Complex is a powerful blend of herbs for brain health that includes bacopa to support mental clarity and energy levels, ginkgo to support brain function, and other herbs such as rosemary with powerful antioxidant properties. During winter, our mood can get bogged down by bad weather but also by stress and these factors that affect our brain health. Antioxidants can help with supporting not only brain health but also mental clarity and alertness. It’s hard to be in a good mood when our energy levels are low or when we’re sick and that’s where adaptogens can help. Adaptogens have been used for centuries and helps support the body with stress by maintaining hormone levels, enhancing immune systems, and boosting energy levels. BioTrace Adapt is a potent herbal blend containing four adaptogenic herbs including ashwagandha for the brain and nervous system, Siberian ginseng for stress and immunity, astragalus root for brain health and immunity, and Schisandra berry to support the heart, liver, kidney and brain. Using New Zealand grown, organic herbs on our children: the benefits Written by Phil Rasmussen M.P.S., M.Pharm., Dip. Herb. Med.; M.N.I.M.H.(UK), F.N.Z.A.M.H, Founder and Technical Director at Kiwiherb, and an experienced medical herbalist and pharmacist.

DID YOU KNOW? ALL KIWIHERB CHILDREN’S PRODUCTS ARE CERTIFIED ORGANIC! Why organic?

KIWIHERB CHILDREN'S PRODUCTS

Ideally if the locally-grown herbs can be grown under certified organic growing conditions, then all the better! Global demands for organic food are increasing exponentially as more people realise the detrimental effects that use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides can have on the environment and their own health. We should therefore also have a preference for using organically grown, rather than conventionally grown therapeutic herbs. Organic herbs for healthy children

Why choose New Zealand grown? New Zealand plants are unique, and amongst the best in the world! We have many distinctive native plants, but numerous other common plant species seem to have special properties when grown here. This is due to our relatively rich soils, our diverse geography and many different microclimates, and possibly the ozone layer hole above us. Therapeutic plants are a growing area of interest, and research suggests that New Zealand can grow some of the best quality herbs in the world. Herbs such as arnica, echinacea, ginseng, ginkgo, green tea, blackcurrant and valerian, have all been found to produce higher levels of active phytochemicals than their overseas-grown counterparts. While the local herb-growing industry is still in its infancy, and costs are higher than for herbs grown in low labour cost countries, there are numerous advantages in supporting our local growers.

Supporting our children’s immunity is a key strategy of herbal practice during the winter months. One of the best researched herbs in this regard, is the root of Echinacea. Echinacea helps to support natural immunity, and can be used either as a preventative taken once a day, or to help shorten the duration of ills and chills should they take hold. When children or infants are all stuffed up and not able to breathe through their nose, herbs such as elderflower and ribwort work to support clear airways and help ease congestion. These can help soothe delicate mucous membranes, in a gentle and natural way. For tight chests, herbs such as hyssop, elecampane, marshmallow and mullein can work wonders, particularly when these are combined with our own local Mānuka honey. Honey is one of the most evidence-based treatments for children’s ills and chills, according to a recent scientific (Cochrane) review which found it to be as effective as many other treatments for soothing children’s chests at night. Back to basics: bone broth Bone broths are an ancient tradition that have come back into style due to being a natural, simple recipe that helps alleviate a range of ailments. So, what’s the best way to introduce a broth into your diet?

Bone broths are made from slow simmering animal bones (like chicken, beef or fish) and the tissue surrounding them for 10 or more hours with various herbs, vegetables, and spices. They have been around since the beginning of time, as our huntergatherer ancestors created the recipe in their quest to not let any part of an animal they’d killed go to waste. Hooves, knuckles, bones and tendons were all put in to boil.

In traditional Chinese medicine, bone broth has a history of being used as a blood builder, digestive tonic and kidney strengthener, due to the rich minerals, collagen, antiinflammatory amino acids and healing compounds found in the animal bones and connective tissue. Bone broths may also be the original anti-aging potion. Alongside many health benefits, the liquid has been touted as the best natural source of collagen, the protein which makes skin smoother and softer and helps combat aging.

Other health benefits attributed to bone broths are that they can help sooth inflamed digestive tracts, strengthen the gut lining and curb leaky gut problems, improve joint health, boost immunity and improve sleep quality. While the recipe is thousands of years old, bone broths are back in style. People want to go back to basics and make their own food from scratch, as well as understand all the ingredients in their food. Bone broth popularity has risen to the point where shops serving takeaway cups of broth called Brodo have opened in New York.

There’s also now a variety of ways in which bone broth can be created. Traditionalists can still buy the bones and boil them up in a crockpot themselves, but for those who want a shortcut, there’s the option of buying ready-made bone broth products, packaged in liquid, powder or cube form. This means the broth can be served in a range of ways, from being frozen into portions to reheat and stir into meals, or stirred into a cup of boiling water as a wintery, immunity-boosting drink. For those brave enough, the powdered form can also be used in smoothies. Come and have a chat to us in store to find out about our bone broth products.

MAKE AT HOME

Nicole Freebairn, CHS Qualified Nutritionist, shares this delicious warming soup recipe you can make at home.

Easy chicken pho Serves 2

INGREDIENTS 2-3 cloves of garlic Thumb of ginger Juice of 1/2 lime, other half to serve 1 tbsp sesame oil 4 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari) 300g chicken thighs, skinless and boneless 2 cup chicken stock 1/2 cup water 1 carrot, peeled into ribbons 2 bok choy, cut into leaves and rinsed 1/2 red chilli, to serve 1 spring onion, to serve 2 eggs 2 tbsp black sesame seeds (optional) 100g rice noodles

NUTRITION TIP Instead of chicken stock for added nutrition you can replace this with a home-made or bought bone broth. See page 17 to find out more about bone broth and its healing properties.

Method: Combine the following ingredients in a large bowl: crushed garlic, grated ginger, lime juice, sesame oil, soy sauce. Slice chicken thighs into 3cm chunks and marinate in this sauce while you prepare the stock. Heat a large pot over medium-high heat and add the stock. Bring to a light boil and then add the marinated chicken - it should sizzle when you add it. Poach for about 15-20 minutes. Add the carrot ribbons and bok choy leaves into the pot and poach for another 5 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked. Season with salt and pepper if desired. While the chicken is poaching, add rice noodles to a large bowl and cover with boiling water. The noodles should cook in a few minutes. Add water and a generous pour of white vinegar to a medium-sized pot. Bring to a boil and then turn down the heat slightly. Crack eggs into the simmering water and poach for about 5 minutes. Remove from water and coat in sesame seeds (if using). Serve each bowl of pho with a soft poached egg, rice noodles, sliced chilli and spring onions. Enjoy!
