SUMMER SKIN ESSENTIALS WHAT IS

GARCINIA CAMBOGIA?

A Healthy by Nature Promotion

Nutrients for beauty support for any age The most common gripe is about fingernails splitting, peeling or breaking easily. Hair that seems to be changing – becoming finer or thinning. Or those experiencing skin changes – the teens with acne susceptible skin to those with more mature skin becoming thinner, fragile and more prone to “laugh and smile lines”.

Beauty is not just about putting on a cream or lotion but actually starts with internal processes. Types of cells that make up our skin, hair and nails are called collagen and keratin – and for healthy development they need certain nutrients regularly. Solgar has two supplements that I often recommend together – Biotin and Skin, Nails and Hair Formula. Simply, because they combine often overlooked but important key nutrients that help support everyone at any age. These include MSM, copper, proline and biotin as well as the usual skin supporting nutrients zinc, Vitamin C and silica that most people know about. The water-soluble nutrients These are nutrients that are not stored in the body and we need every day. We have known for a long time that Vitamin C is vital for skin as it supports collagen synthesis and with antioxidant protection help against UV-induced photo-damage. Biotin is known to help boost keratin production therefore helping to strengthen nails and support healthy hair and growth. Ideal if nails become weak and start to peel – just know that it works on new nail growth and takes a while for this to come to the tip of the nail!

Biotin is known to help boost keratin production therefore helping to strengthen nails and support healthy hair and growth. Key minerals Zinc is an essential mineral that supports growth and repair of our skin. Many acne sufferers can be zinc deficient. Zinc can help prevent the production of oily skin and therefore help to prevent acne outbreaks. Copper supports rebuilding of collagen and elastin in the skin helping improve skin elasticity and skin firmness. It may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and help keep hair thick and healthy. MSM, a sulphur compound, has been gaining attention in anti-aging circles as it is necessary for the production of healthy collagen, working with Vitamin C to support hair and nail strength and help maintain smooth, fresh looking skin. Amino acids The building blocks of Collagen are two amino acids, lysine and proline, that support skin tone and may help with sagging skin, which can be associated with aging. Visit any Community Health Store to find out more about Solgar Biotin and Skin, Nails and Hair Formula products. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist please see your healthcare professional. Solgar NZ Ltd, Auckland TAPS PP3160.

Summer days, summer ways CHS and Tonic Health assistant manager and beauty therapist Maxine Scoble talks to us about summer skin and how to look after your body’s largest organ during the warmer weather.

Longer days mean more time out and about outside, enjoying the sunshine and making the most of the warmer weather. Longer days also mean our bodies are exposed to harsh rays of the sun for extended periods, so it’s also the time to pay a bit more attention to our skin. Prepare Our skin needs hydrating all year round to keep it soft and supple, and to banish dry and thirsty skin. We know all about drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration, but also remember to hydrate your skin. Choose a product that doesn’t add any extra oil to your skin, such as a gel toner that will assist in refreshing and restoring your skin’s natural pH balance. Hemp seed oil is an amazing oil in capsule form, says Maxine, which has

many benefits for your skin and body. It’s great to take to give the skin a plump, youthful appearance and can support general wellness and vitality. Care As the outdoors beckon, we all know the ritual of covering ourselves up with hats, sunnies, and clothes that protect us, and selecting an effective sunscreen, reapplied throughout the day. Products that combine tasks can save a bit of time, so look out for a natural sunscreens blended with a natural tanning lotion. Clear formula tanning products that develop slowly over time can also work while you sleep – just apply before bed and wake up with a natural, sun-kissed glow. For pesky mosquitoes and insects, consider taking a more natural

approach by choosing a product that does not contain Deet or Picaridin. Taking a Vitamin B complex is also said to keep away the mozzies – we can’t smell it, but they can. It’s also got the added benefit of being great for energy levels! Wear It’s sometimes nice to take a lighter touch to makeup and let the radiant glow of healthy skin shine through. A winning combination is to keep makeup a little more natural and to use colours such as pinks and peaches for lips and cheeks, says Maxine. There are also many natural lip balms to choose from, which have the dual effect of nourishing and protecting the delicate skin. Changing to a natural deodorant is better for you and the environment, and for summer choose a citrus fragrance to awaken the senses. Have you heard of Garcinia cambogia? CHS and Health for Life medical herbalist Susie Tsaclis shares her knowledge of this intriguing extract.

What is Garcinia cambogia? Garcinia cambogia is a small pumpkinlike fruit, often the size of large tomato. It’s a cousin of the mangosteen fruit, and also goes by the name of Malabar tamarind or brindleberry. Garcinia cambogia is used in Malay cuisine as sour or tart soup, often consumed prior to a main meal as an appetiser. The Garcinia cambogia extract comes from the rind of the fruit. How does it work? The active ingredient in Garcinia cambogia is hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, and is in the fruit’s rind. It appears to block an enzyme called citrate lyase, which the body uses to make fat.

Does it work? Investigations have been conducted because of the role Garcinia cambogia may have in weight management Garcinia supports: • optimising the leptin hormone, which may diminish your appetite when you are overweight • helping you to feel fuller • healthy serotonin levels, thereby curbing emotional eating and stress eating • normal insulin output and sensitivity to insulin, thereby supporting blood sugar balance and craving management.

Garcinia cambogia works by encouraging the body to use fat as an energy source, rather than storing it.

Who is it for? Garcinia cambogia can be used by those wanting to encourage a healthy metabolism and manage their appetite and cravings, and we recommend using it as part of a healthy lifestyle change. Keep in mind results will always vary for individuals, and depend on factors like physical condition, lifestyle and diet.

It also supports healthy serotonin levels in the brain, which may help you to feel good.

Garcinia cambogia is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and if you

are diabetic, you should check with your GP if it is safe. It is non-stimulatory and may be able to be taken by people with high blood pressure and heart problems, where other weight management supplements may not be suitable. How is it used? We recommend that customers look at the big picture with weight management. It’s a lifestyle change, which can also include moderate exercise, a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, and supplementation if necessary. Often Garcinia is used as part of a total weight management programme. If you want to find out more about living a healthy lifestyle and see if Garcinia cambogia might be right for you, come into one of our Community Health Stores and speak with one of our experts.

Whole food, whole life Monique Hemmingson talks to us about her intrepid journey to good health and how the route to the best result is not always the fastest.

Monique Hemmingson’s journey to good health took her around the world – literally. While backpacking through Southeast Asia six years ago she had a double-dose of bad luck when she was struck down with giardia followed a week later by salmonella. Alone and with no medical help readily available, she decided to keep going, with little understanding of the lasting effect such illnesses would have on her body. Continuing her life and her travels, Monique found minimal relief for her ongoing symptoms with conventional and other remedies she was recommended. After trying diets, reading books, and experimenting with people’s advice, she found the best option was to listen to her body and try to heal herself. “The solution was to work on what suited me personally,” says Monique. “This was

10

to take out the ‘bad’ food and bring in good, whole foods.” Realising what’s in the food we eat is a great first step to being healthier, she says, and looking closer can reveal that what we’re eating often contains more ‘junk’ than goodness. “Cleaning up your diet can do amazing things for everyone,” she says. “Stripping it back, keeping it fresh and if possible, organic, and learning what’s in your food and where it comes from is a great start.” Monique says the convenience and accessibility of fast food has a lot to answer for. “It’s not just the food itself, but the mentality of how to eat. The process of recognising you’re hungry, making a meal and sitting down to eat can activate some of the digestive enzymes in the

body. Eating on the run means you’re not actually giving your body its best chance to use the food you’ve just eaten. This is something I have been trying to become more mindful of lately.” Monique says that while she was travelling it was always a challenge to find foods she could enjoy and tolerate. Realising there was a niche to fill prompted her along the path to becoming a business owner. Returning from London to New Zealand in 2016, Monique used her new health knowledge and her experience in the hospitality industry to establish Wild One Wholefoods Eatery in the Bay of Plenty’s Mount Maunganui. “There are always new challenges in your life that take it in a different direction,” she says. “The journey to health set me on a path for my whole life.”

Wild One Wholefoods Eatery is all about giving people the opportunity to eat clean food, and to make it a positive experience. The café’s food is all made on-site, is organic where possible, and the standard menu is vegan and glutenfree with the option to add salmon and free-range eggs. Every effort is made to be environmentally friendly with packaging and recycling, and the team do what they can for charity events that align with their belief structure. “We want to show an example of how we live,” says Monique. “We’ve created a place where people can come and eat, and where it proves that clean eating can be delicious and doesn’t have to be this big self-sacrificing diet where you are miserable! You can eat sweet and savoury foods that are tasty and are nourishing for your body as well.” The local community is vitally important to Monique and her business, providing support throughout the year, which is especially important in a seasonal town where in winter you need the loyalty of regular patrons.

These days Monique has a range of support to keep her health aligned, including a naturopath, an acupuncturist, and an integrative GP. “It’s still quite a journey, and there’s still quite a lot of damage to fix. Yet, in terms of my day to day life, my health is the best it’s been in a long time.” Monique says it’s taken a while for her to consider the symptoms she has as a positive sign from her body. “We immediately think of a symptom as a negative thing and go about trying to fix it. But symptoms are your friend, they’re your body’s messenger and are communicating to you that something’s just not right.” A prime example is adrenal fatigue, says Monique, who has personal experience with the condition. “Adrenal fatigue is your body’s way of saying ‘hey, I’m not dealing with things and something has to change’. It’s hard – because you’re not actually trying to be stressed out. It’s important to put solutions in place, like finding your happy place, finding your calm, being mindful, and being kind to yourself.

"Everyone is responsible for their own health, and for finding ways to look after themselves in better ways". Self-care is so underrated, but in reality it’s the only way you’re going to get through in the longer term.” Monique says, “It’s important for everyone to do what’s right for them. You’re really the only person who can help you, people need to step up and take responsibility for that.”

Happy gut, happy life

We talk to two of our CHS experts, medical herbalist and store owner Bronwyn Lowe, and naturopath and store manager Serena Donaldson, who share their knowledge on gut health and how to support it through healthy living. A healthy gut is a prerequisite for a healthy life! If your gut is in tiptop condition it will provide all your body needs to maintain good overall health, including energy, mental clarity, proper digestion and absorption of nutrients and protection from pathogens. What are some of the signs of an unhealthy gut? The signs and symptoms of an unhealthy gut can be presented anywhere in the body, says Bronwyn. Common issues relate to inflammation in the small intestine, colon and liver. If the digestive system is not breaking down and absorbing foods properly, the body will not obtain the nutrients from a healthy diet, which may lead to nutrient and vitamin deficiencies. When the linings of the intestinal tract are inflamed, fighting pathogens or

12

unhealthy in any capacity, the nerve endings block peristalsis, a digestive action, from occurring. This can lead to some digestive disorders such as IBS, candida, leaky gut, colitis, and gastritis. The liver also plays a part in digestive health, acting like a sponge and soaking up all toxins, pathogens, heavy metals, medications and rotting foods in our digestive system. Bile produced by the liver breaks down fats and proteins we digest, but when our digestive system is not functioning properly, the liver can’t fight off bacteria and viruses. What are some of the ways to increase gut health naturally? There are various ways to increase gut health, and Bronwyn says incorporating a whole food, organic diet, whilst reducing inflammatory foods such as gluten, dairy, processed foods and refined sugars is a good place to start.

She also suggests: • reducing stress • adding L-glutamine powder to water or smoothies to help rebuild the intestinal lining and improve gut permeability • using probiotics in the early stages of gastrointestinal tract symptoms, such as bloating and distention • using digestive enzymes to support the absorption of nutrients from foods • drinking a glass of warm water with fresh lemon in the morning to stimulate digestion. Hydrochloric acid is the precursor for digestion, and the first defence toward pathogens, explains Bronwyn, so watch for symptoms of low levels such as bloating and distention after eating. To build levels back, try drinking plain

Also, says Serena, drink plenty of water, as your digestive system can’t move or function properly if you’re dehydrated. You can add in a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for a more alkalising effect. Eat more fermented foods such as sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar, miso, kimchi, and kefir. Adequate protein intake is also important, because amino acids contained in protein, play a big role in healing the gut.

"Herbs can play a vital role in the healing of the gastrointestinal tract". What part do herbs play in supporting gut health? Bronwyn, suggests the following herbs: • Chamomile, a carminative and an anti-inflammatory, which is often used for symptoms such as flatulence, bloating and indigestion. • Lemon balm, which is carminative and spasmolytic. Used to relieve gastrointestinal tract symptoms, such as flatulence and indigestion. It’s also a relaxing nervine, concurrently, calming the mind, as well as, the digestive system. celery or cucumber juice to hydrate on a cellular level. Remember, exercise not only increases circulation throughout the body, but also relieves the bowels. Mindful eating practices help us to slow down and focus on our food, says Bronwyn, and can really help improve digestion. She also suggests avoiding trends and diets, as almost all of them are not good for long term health. What part does nutrition play in supporting gut health? The cleaner your diet is, the easier it is for your digestive system to absorb nutrients and eliminate waste efficiently, says Serena. Fresh fruit and vegetables (organic where possible) actually contain important prebiotics that help to nourish good bacteria in the gut, and when good bacteria are thriving, the whole gut benefits. Of course, fruit and vegetables are also one of the best sources of fibre, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. Avoiding processed foods also assists, as many of these foods contain preservatives that can be harmful to these good bacteria.

• Kawakawa – a beautiful New Zealand native that can be used internally to treat symptoms of gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and poor digestion. • Aloe vera is anti-viral and antibacterial, as well as, incredibly soothing to the gut. It is great for gastrointestinal conditions such as treatment of peptic/duodenal ulcers. • Licorice, an anti-inflammatory, demulcent and relaxing expectorant, not only tastes lovely, but also kills off bacteria and viruses in the gut, stimulates the production of digestive fluids and supports kidney, liver and bladder health. • Milk Thistle is a liver and bitter tonic, as well as, hepatoprotective. Daily use can improve energy levels, detox the liver and improve digestion. Even the simple, calming act of drinking a ginger or peppermint tea has astonishing healing powers for the gut. Remember that every case is different, and so, what may work for others may not work for you. Always consult your local nutritionist, naturopath and/or medical herbalist for proper advice and individualised treatment.

Tis the season to be sniffly There have recently been interesting associations between gut flora and the immune response to allergens in the environment. A healthy flora has shown to benefit people suffering from seasonal allergies. ProbiogenTM probiotic is a new solution for this common New Zealand health complaint.

PROBIOGENTM Probiotics that thrive Recent research has shown an association between allergies and gut flora imbalance. Gut flora imbalance or dysbiosis can result from poor diet, antibiotic use, caesarean sections and, interestingly, a lack of exposure to soil-based probiotics, especially seen in first-world countries. It is the state where gut beneficial bacteria is in low numbers and harmful bacteria in higher counts. Flora imbalance can make people more susceptible to allergens. ProbiogenTM contains the soil-based bacteria Bacillus clausii and Bacillus subtilis that, once in the digestive tract, can help correct the gut flora imbalance by a two-pronged approach: producing prebiotics for other good bacteria to thrive and producing specific compounds to reduce the overgrowth of harmful bacteria. This mode of action is unique to the bacteria in ProbiogenTM that is different to most other probiotics.

Good Morning Honey Nicole Freebairn, Qualified Nutritionist at CHS store Tonic Health in Hamilton shares her favourite summer Mānuka Honey breakfast recipes.

Blueberry + Mānuka Honey Smoothie Bowl - Serves 1 1 banana, frozen ¾ C frozen blueberries ½ tsp Mānuka honey

1 tbsp chia seeds 2 heaped tbsp coconut yoghurt ½ C unsweetened almond or coconut milk

Method: Combine all of the ingredients in a high powered blender, until a smooth but thick mix is formed. Pour into a bowl and serve with your favourite toppings.

Mānuka Honey Granola Clusters Serves 4-6

1 ½ C rolled oats 1 C shredded coconut ½ C raw almonds, roughly chopped ½ C raw cashews, roughly chopped

½ tsp ground cinnamon Pinch of salt ½ C coconut oil 2 heaped tbsp Mānuka honey 1 tsp vanilla essence

Method: Preheat oven to 170 degrees celsius. Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix. In a small pot, add the coconut oil and Mānuka honey. Stir over low heat until the coconut oil is melted and the mixture is well combined. Take off the heat, stir in the vanilla then pour the coconut mixture over the dry ingredients. Mix until everything is well coated. Line an oven tray with baking paper and spread out the granola mix in an even layer (about 1-2cm thick). Bake for 15 minutes and then turn around in the oven and bake for a further 10 minutes. Do not mix the granola while it is cooking, as this will disrupt the cluster formation. Watch carefully that it doesn’t burn. It's ready when it's golden and smells fragrant. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. This is the crucial time for forming clusters so do not touch it while it is cooling. When the granola is dry, break apart into clusters. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Nutritional benefits of Mānuka Honey • Unlike other varieties, mānuka honey contains a unique antibacterial compound known as methylgloxyl (MGO) which has been shown to be particularly beneficial in healing wounds and infections. • Active Mānuka honey with a higher MGO rating is used in hospitals worldwide as a dressing for skin wounds. • Some evidence suggests that when taken internally, active Mānuka honey is effective in fighting bacterial infections, particularly Helicobactor pylori infections in the stomach. • Rising in popularity as a treatment in cases of antibiotic resistance. • Mānuka honey has a lower GI than sugar and could be used as a sweetener alternative.

Boost your energy levels naturally with trace minerals & magnesium These days it’s hard to maintain a balanced diet with a busy lifestyle. People know to take vitamins to supplement their wellbeing but what about minerals?

IONIC MINERALS BOND WITH WATER MAKING THEM EASIER TO ABSORB

BIOTRACE CMD Concentrated Mineral Drops We often forget about them, but they are essential to our health and perform numerous biological functions, such as converting carbohydrates to energy, maintaining bone strength, balancing the body’s pH level, supporting the immune system, and more. Sometimes all it takes to boost your energy levels could simply be to replenish the trace minerals in your body. Mineral deficiency in the western world is becoming more common due to intensive farming using synthetic fertilisers, pollution and industrialisation which may, cause toxic metal accumulation in the body. Toxic metals compete with minerals for absorption, and taking non-ionic or synthetic mineral supplements or drugs can also upset the equilibrium of minerals in the body. The good news is that we can replenish vitamins and minerals through a healthy diet, drinking water and topping up with ionic supplements.

BioTrace’s Elemental range provides essential minerals that allows targeting of specific mineral deficiencies such as boron, chromium, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Knowing your mineral deficiencies, imbalances and toxic mineral excesses is vital to understanding many wellness issues. But how do you find out your mineral levels? Choosing the right provider for your Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) makes all the difference. MediScan uses two separate spectrometers giving more accurate readings across the total elements. HTMA, when interpreted correctly, gives you all the information you need, so it’s important for staff interpreting the results to hold high qualifications and follow rigorous quality processes in the laboratory. Talk to your local Community Health Store about getting a hair sample collected for a MediScan HTMA test today.

An exceptional source of food-grade1 ionic minerals and trace elements is BioTrace CMD (Concentrated Mineral Drops) that is both natural and sourced sustainably. Adding a few drops to your water allows you to mineralise your water easily and affordably. It contains up to 72 naturally occurring minerals and trace minerals, is low in sodium and is safe to use for the whole family. BioTrace CMD supports mineral balance in the body with a mineral composition close to healthy human plasma. It also supports pH balance with a naturally alkaline pH of 7.9 – 8.3. A commonly deficient mineral is magnesium, since we can store so little in our body, but it is critically important because it’s necessary for over 300 essential biochemical reactions in our body. Magnesium in Bisglycinate form is one of the best for absorption in the body because the magnesium is bound to glycine amino acids to enhance the absorption by your cells. As an added bonus, it’s softer on your bowels.

Jump into Summer with Thompson’s All-In-One Joint Complex

With the warmer weather, it is natural to want to spend more time outside, enjoying being more active in the sunshine. But anyone who suffers from stiffness knows, it is not always that easy without any support for their joints. Joint stiffness can affect people of all ages but is most common in the over-40 age group. It can happen as a result of loss of cartilage in the joints due to wear and tear or ageing. Often it is located in the weight-bearing joints of the body such as hips, knees and ankles, and the hands. The bigger the load on these joints (standing all day at work or just carrying a few extra kilos, for example), the greater the risk. The risk of developing joint stiffness increases with age. In New Zealand, one in seven people are affected by some form of joint stiffness1. So if your joints are feeling a little stiff this spring, Thompson’s All-In-One Joint Complex could offer support. An array of nature’s herbal ingredients including Turmeric, Boswellia and Grape Seed, blended together with vitamins, minerals and nutrients like Glucosamine, all work together to provide you with a convenient all in one joint support.

The unique triple action formula works in three ways to:

NEW LARGER PACK SIZE

1. Support normal function and mobility in stiff, worn or aging joints. 2. Support comfort of joint movement 3. Support the body’s natural cartilage repair process So make the most of your summer with Thompson’s All-In-One Joint Complex.

Nature’s

ultimate antioxidant uncovered by Karin Spicer N.D Lifestream Naturopath

When Mother Nature was handing out potent antioxidant properties to our planet’s plant life she decided to give an extra generous portion of the powerful antioxidant Astaxanthin to a tiny, vibrantly red algae called Haematococcus Pluvialis. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that supports total body cell protection. Scientific studies have shown astaxanthin supports a wide variety of health benefits from fast recovery after exercise including for those athletes who train to be the top in their field, all the way through to those wanting to support healthy aging for eyes, joints, brain, and for skin health - especially people who spend a lot of time outside through work or play. As an antioxidant, Astaxanthin is 65 times stronger than vitamin C and unlike other antioxidants it never becomes a harmful pro-oxidant in the body. Lifestream Astazan contains 6mg of sustainably sourced Astaxanthin which is dried and extracted in Nelson, New Zealand, with added vitamin E for extra antioxidant support. Being from a natural algae plant source, it is also vegetarian and vegan friendly.

In today’s fast paced world, antioxidants provide much needed protection against free radical damage and oxidative stress. Whether you are exercising regularly and want to recover faster, studying or learning a new skill, love spending time outdoors on beautiful kiwi summer days, or just want to see the world through fresh eyes, Lifestream Astazan 6mg provides nature’s ultimate antioxidant to support total cellular health and wellbeing.

A collective brew

Organic

Health for Life, Coastlands in Paraparaumu, proudly supported the Independence Collective Fundraising Quiz night by donating Health For Life store vouchers and copies of Healthy by Nature magazine for the event. The Independence Collective is a group of individuals with an intellectual disability seeking to gain financial independence by coming together as a collective under the entrepreneurial spirit. They are currently working on the launch of their very own beer label under the brand “The Independence Collective”. And have brewed their first beer too, it’s called "Neville" and is a craft Pale Ale brewed in partnership with Duncan's Brewing here on the Kapiti Coast. One member of the collective, Nathan, is a regular visitor to the store and was really excited to be able to bring in a bottle of their first brew for a taster (after hours of course!). “We all thought it was pretty good! It’s great to see these young people reaching out and creating something of their own”.

Dead Sea Mineral Skincare Christmas, a time for giving Christmas can be a difficult and stressful time for many people. To give back at this time of year, Health for Life at the Plaza, in Palmerston North have been getting into the festive spirit by heading up Operation Christmas Shoe Box. The team pack shoe boxes full of gifts for kids, these can include things like tee shirts, hair clips, ribbons, colouring books and pencils. The boxes are sorted and labelled by sex and age and donated to local charities to give to children that might not be getting a visit from Santa this year.

Grateful for growth Big shout out to Sarah Rudd, who will be getting her hair shaved for charity on the 1st December at O'Range Hair Salon in Coastlands. Sarah has been growing her hair (without dying it) for five years to help raise money for Cure for Child Cancer Foundation & Canteen as well as donating her actual hair to Freedom Hair Wigs. Health for Life Coastlands donated a special package including a gratitude diary to Sarah to say thank you. Sarah was over the moon with our donation, and thought it was perfect for the cause.

How did you find yourself as part of the CHS Group? My path to natural health retailing was via research and development mostly in primary production, sustainable agriculture, and animal health. I’m passionate and continue to study the relationship between soil fertility and health and the positive outcomes you can get through sensible supplementation.

How do you support your local community? We are active in our local communities, making donations of goods to local hospitals, hospices and rest homes. We also sponsor the Excellence in Business Awards, the Brave Thinkers Programme and provide raffle prizes for school fundraisers. We even have a reading room for folk to research their favourite natural health topics.

What is the best thing about your job? The results that our customers get every day from their programmes, and helping our teams develop their skills to assist our customers.

Is there a customer who you’ve helped whose story stands out to you? We recently helped a lady who was struggling with low energy, weakness, aches and pains. After trying all manner of therapies, we suggested she tried a well absorbed iron supplement. It worked, and she came back in to say she hadn’t felt better in years.

What does being part of the CHS group mean to you? Natural health products can help produce real benefits in terms of improved health and wellbeing. The CHS network is the only natural health retail group that I have found that that focuses on better health outcomes for consumers. What expertise can your team offer? We help to educate customers about our natural health products, supplements and natural skin care programs and the importance of a tailored programme for their health concerns. We believe customers should have a positive relationship with their GP, to provide a professional diagnosis of medical conditions and concerns.

Always read the label and use as directed. If symptoms persist see your healthcare professional. NaturalMeds, Napier

Chris’s top health tips • Take responsibility for you own health. • Supplement proactively rather than reactively. It takes far more nutrients to get well rather than stay well. • Use formulas that are based on good science rather than price. • Be realistic. Allow time for results to happen. • Buy your supplements from a trusted retailer.
