Which aspects of the job do you enjoy most?
Advocacy. It is a barrister’s most powerful and persuasive weapon. There is nothing like looking a jury in the eye and knowing that you are winning them over.
Which aspects do you find most challenging?
Cross-examining young or vulnerable witnesses. No-one, however professional and emotionally detached they are, derives pleasure from pursuing a line of questions which will upset witnesses. It is, however, a necessary part of my job.
Any particular career highs or lows?
A high point was a closing speech I gave recently at the conclusion of a three-month trial. The jury applauded and acquitted my client. The other eight defendants were convicted. A low point was when I failed to persuade Prosecution counsel to drop a serious allegation against my client, who was terminally ill. The client died before the Prosecution realised there was no case to answer against him.
The challenges I face are, I suspect, no different to those faced by other professional women: work-life balance. This is not a nine-to-five job. So much of my work is done in the evening, at the weekend and even when supposedly on holiday, that it is often difficult to strike a sensible balance, particularly once you throw children into the equation. The love of a good and supportive husband helps. As do my parents, without whom I’d be lost!
Which are your favourite Didsbury places?
The Alpine Garden in Fletcher Moss. I used to play hide and seek there when I was little. I love to go for walks by the Mersey, culminating in a cake at the café in Fletcher Moss.
What is your earliest memory? Running away to Didsbury village – or ‘de willage’ as I used to call it – when I was about three. A neighbour found me and took me home. I’d got as far as Bamford Grove.
What are the particular challenges facing What makes you happy? women who work in your profession? Swimming in turquoise sea, with The Bar has changed dramatically, even in the last twenty years or so. When I started out, female barristers were not allowed to wear trousers in court! Fewer than 20% of applicants for silk are women and those appointed to judicial office are still outnumbered by men. However, that will change as the numbers balance out; there are, in fact, now more women joining my profession than men.

Making an impression Are you an incurable romantic with a love of everything hand-made? Planning something special in 2015? Share the love by making your own Valentines or save-the-date cards. Here’s how, courtesy of our Friends at the Ministry of Craft.

Decide on your design - we chose simple SAVE THE DATE lettering with a heart motif and the date. We used a biro to mark out the design on the surface of the lino, so we could see where to cut. If you’re hand carving lettering and numbers then it’s important to remember to carve them back to front. The print that you take from your stamp will be a mirror image of your block.

Safety first - it’s worth noting that the lino cutting tools are very sharp and it’s easy to slip. Set yourself up so that you are cutting at a comfortable height on an even surface, and ALWAYS cut away from the hand or fingers that are steadying the lino. And even then, it’s probably best to have some plasters at the ready. This is crafting at its dangerous best!
Inking and printing - When you have your prints carved and ready you can crack open the stamp pads. Press the stamp onto the pad a number of times until you can see that the surface of your print is evenly covered with ink. Then place your stamp face up on a cutting mat, or clean flat surface, and carefully place your card over the top in the required position. You don’t want to smear the ink on the card at this point, so take your time. We used a spoon to ‘hand burnish’ over the top of the print with even pressure in small circular movements. Do this all over the print block (to take a nice even print) and then peel the card off and stand back to bask in your own awesomeness.

Roll with it - If you want to use ink from a tube, you’ll need a flat surface that you can roll ink out on with a roller. We used a Perspex sheet. When the ink is rolled out and is making a gentle hissing noise (rather than a sticky crackle) then you can use the roller to transfer the ink from the sheet onto the printing block. Roll in all directions to build up a good layer of ink. Then take your print as before, using the spoon to apply even pressure though the back of the card.

(we used neon pink, black and white inks) lino cutting tool set lino or printing block a roller (if you want to try some block printing ink as well as stamp pads, as we did)

Patience is a virtue – We printed all our ‘SAVE the DATE’ lettering first with white ink. Then we waited for them to dry before printing the hearts in neon pink. Then we waited again for the pink to dry while we carved the date stamp. Overprinting the hearts with the date stamp can end in a mucky mess if you don’t take your time and ensure every bit of ink is dry. The inks dry pretty quickly, so it’s not a big deal. Our top tip is to pass the time with a brew (or a gin if it’s past noon).

Didsbury Arts Festival is excited to announce that for the first time they will be commissioning five new works to headline the festival alongside their usual open submissions programme. Artists and performers are invited to take part in an exciting, new challenge at Didsbury Arts Festival 2015. This year’s festival (20 to 28 June) introduces the theme of In-Between Places to celebrate Didsbury’s unique position as both vibrant suburb and green retreat; an ‘in-between’ place where city and country meet.
Following a break in 2014, DAF is back with a brand new look and under new leadership. Daniel Williamson replaces former DAF Director, Maria Stripling, who remains involved as Chair of the new DAF Board. Daniel said: “This thriving community arts festival has gone from strength to strength since its inauguration five years ago. I am delighted to have joined the DAF team at such an exciting time and I look forward to contributing as DAF
Festival Director, Daniel Williamson: “We are encouraging artists and audience to explore urban landscape and the sense of place in general, or specifically
continues to grow and develop.” The artist submissions process is now open, with information and application forms available on the DAF website. The deadline for all artist submissions is 16 February 2015. Local organisations and businesses are also invited to support the event by providing venues or through sponsorship and donations of goods and services. Details are available on the website. Since its inception in 2009, DAF has become a key event in Didsbury, showcasing a huge range of local and national talent and attracting audiences of up to 5,000 across the local area.

On Sunday 14 June, Didsbury Open Gardens will see over twentyfive private and public gardens opening to raise money for charity, including St Ann’s Hospice. “We’ve raised over £45,000 to date”, said Maria Stripling who started the event, “and we are always looking for new gardens to open this year alongside past favourites.” Local gardeners are encouraged to get in touch if they would like to be part of this lovely community event which is a highlight in the Didsbury calendar. Didsbury Through Time
All you ever wanted to know about Didsbury’s history by Andrew Simpson Every area should have someone who writes about its past.
In the case of Didsbury there have been quite a few. In the mid 19th century there was the Reverend John Booker who wrote A History of the Chapels of Didsbury & Chorlton in 1857.* It was one of a series he produced on the chapels around Manchester, and all of them have been plundered by historians ever since, because they not only contain accounts of the churches and chapels, but are a detailed history of each area. So, along with accounts of the people, there are vivid descriptions of the townships in the mid 19th century, with vast amounts of original documents. Not to be outdone, later in that century Fletcher Moss produced a wealth of material on Didsbury’s history. But today I want to concentrate on two books written in 1969 and 1976. Ivor R. Million published A History of Didsbury in response to requests to build on a lecture he gave on Didsbury in the Middle Ages, while Ernest France and T.F.Woodall added to the story with their own A New History of Didsbury. They come from that period when local historians in south Manchester were writing about the transformation of their villages and townships from rural communities to suburbs. In Chorlton there was John Lloyd and in Stretford there was Samuel Massey.**

In each case the knowledge of what had been was only just fading from living memory, but for those buying into the suburbs of south Manchester the revelation that there had been fields, farms and plenty of historic buildings was fascinating. Neither of these two books is over friendly. They are packed with detail and original material and both are less an engaging romp than a carefully researched source of information. One of their great strengths is that they drew on new information which had become available long after the works of Booker and Moss were published. Both also took the reader on a journey around the old township which, in the case of France and Woodall, added a collection of memories from people who had lived through some of the changes. Since then there have been a series of small booklets on aspects of Didsbury’s history and a picture book by Ernest France.*** And now it is time for a new book, which does not attempt to revisit or repackage what already has been published, but to do something slightly different. Didsbury Through Time, to be published later this year, chronicles the changes over the last century. Mixing old pictures of the place with new photographs and images by Peter Topping, it concentrates, also, on the people who lived there. So, along with Bertha, there are stories of the great and good
and the humble and industrious, ranging from Fletcher Moss, the historian and politician, to William Wrightham, cab driver and Mary Garside, the cook at the Priory. Book Review Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life by George Eliot
Virginia Woolf described it as ‘one of the few English novels written for grown-up people’. Indeed, George Eliot’s masterpiece appeals to the modern sensibilities of today’s reader for its anti-romantic standpoint and the complex psychologies of its protagonists. In offering a critique of the literary conventions employed by her contemporaries and of the limitations imposed on women in the nineteenth century, Eliot also shows herself to be ahead of her times. In Middlemarch, heroic aspirations are blighted and marriage, the happy-ever-after in most Victorian novels, is no bed of roses!
Set in a rural, Midlands community, just before the passing of the Great Reform Bill of 1832, Middlemarch explores the life of the English middle classes against a background of increasing industrialisation and social unrest. At the heart of the novel lie the parallel stories of Dorothea Brooke and the ambitious young doctor, Tertius Lydgate, who share a passion for knowledge and meaningful action. For both characters, youthful idealism is disappointed when they find themselves trapped in disastrous marriages. Dorothea is to be found ‘sobbing bitterly’ on honeymoon with the dry-as-dust scholar, Edward Casaubon, whom she
initially mistakes for a latter-day Milton. Meanwhile, Lydgate finds himself fatally compromised as a result of his marriage to the charming, but shallow, Rosamund Vincy. Interwoven with these two central narratives are the concerns and mischief-making of the myriad characters that inhabit the rich tapestry of Eliot’s fascinating, fictional world. • Review by Deborah Grace
The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher Hilary Mantel
Two Booker prizes and the attainment of national treasure status have not, thankfully, deterred Hilary Mantel from being a thorn in the side of the establishment. The outraged spluttering provoked in certain quarters by the title tale of this collection was no less enjoyable for being predictable! The story imagines the killing of Margaret Thatcher in 1983 by an IRA sniper, who uses the narrator’s bedroom window as vantage point. Throughout, Mantel’s trademark quirkiness is evident in the darkly comic exchange between captive narrator and would-be assassin: ‘They call her the widowmaker.
Though not in this case. Poor bloody Denis, eh? He’ll have to boil his own eggs now.’ Indeed, a macabre wit pervades many of the stories in this collection as Mantel holds a mirror to everyday life and, in the distorted reflection, reveals the horrors lurking beneath. There is a sense of things being badly awry in a world in which the boundary between real and imagined is blurred and protagonists are trapped in their solitary nightmares. In a stifling, Jeddah apartment a lonely British woman is confined by ‘double doors of dark wood, heavy like coffin lids’. A couple, at the start of their Greek Island holiday, become
complicit in a horrifying crime. Adultery has fatal consequences in The Long QT and an act of childhood transgression, committed during a long, hot summer, is recalled in Comma. Mantel’s formidable talents are fully engaged in these brilliant, subversive and gleefully nasty tales. • Review by Deborah Grace

February In Your Garden By Katherine Watson
A mild winter makes us gardeners a bit jumpy.
We’re excited to have been out and about over the winter months and looking increasingly forward to the growing season. Our sap is rising. But there is also a trepidatious nervousness about what the early spring could bring in terms of inclement weather, and what we could lose as a result. I’m staying positive and hoping my Euphorbia mellifera makes it through another winter unscathed and that my tree ferns will produce furry knots of unfurled fronds in their crowns later in the spring. And so to the seed catalogues for optimistic (over) buying of dwarf veg for a few pots and some salad potatoes this year. Unwittingly I’ve blundered into the annuals section and I’m actually considering trying some from seed this year. Annuals have never been my thing, as I have a smallish garden with only one true sunny border and some dubious contenders for partial sun. I have grown the spider plant Cleome from seed before and the amazingly coloured Cerinthe major purpurascens (a colour not dissimilar to luminescent tie-dye), but it falls into the category of tinkering rather than full on propagation for successional planting. I’m not promising to do any different this year, but I would like to embrace some choice annuals as yearly fillers to bring the excitement of change and renewal in contrast to the permanence of the perennial stayers. One such annual is the hardy annual umbellifer Ammi majus. Umbellifer describes the shape of the flowering part of the plant which will be flat or domed - in the case of Ammi majus, the umbels have individual, white lace-like flowers that mix well with other border perennials. Ammi visnaga is a denser, greener form that I’m going to try this year (see www.sarahraven.com or Thompson and Morgan for seeds). I also fancy a variety of Cleome called Hairy Fairy for the name alone. Both these annuals can be sown in February inside, hardened off and then planted outside after threat of frost. Alternatively the Ammi can be sown directly into your chosen bed in April or May.

Football: Bedians win thriller to reach last four Bedians were at home for the Lancashire County Cup quarterfinals, taking on LAL’s Howe Bridge Mills in a game which had more twists and turns than the top performers in Strictly Come Dancing! The visitors showed their intent as they raced into a 2-0 lead with Bedians caught cold by their lively attackers.
But the latter stages of the first half saw Bedians begin to dominate and they reduced the arrears before the break with a good strike from Alex Porter, who kept up his record of scoring in very game in the Bedians’ cup run. Bedians kept up the momentum in the second half creating plenty of chances and got their reward as Stuart Madew netted to level the scores, then Porter gave them the lead with a clinical spot kick, extending his scoring record to seven goals in the competition.
Howe Bridge showed great battling qualities and once more deservedly drew level. With the game looking to go to a penalty shoot-out, a superb finish from Matt Brady again put them ahead with two minutes left on the clock. But Howe Bridge caught Bedians napping and levelled from the kick off! This set up the penalty shoot out. Alex Porter and Matt Brady despatched their spot kicks with Howe Bridge missing one. Then
A Sports Club like no other
Theatre, rambles and literary outings Didsbury Sports Club was formed many years ago, when there was still a swimming pool at the Didsbury Campus. While it may no longer have a great sporting ethos, the club does enjoy a monthly ramble and a number of days out. It doesn’t have a regular meeting place either, but keeps its members informed with newsletters. The club also organises visits

to theatres in the Manchester area, including The Lowry, Royal Exchange and Altrincham Garrick Playhouse. Travel is by coach from Didsbury Village and the next trip is to Bolton Octagon. There are also special excursions in the spring and the autumn each year: members have been backstage at the BBC in Media City and the Palace Hotel. A recent trip to Knutsford was a great opportunity to learn about the early
