F
ew communities embody the soul of the American West and the Industrial Revolution the way this Missouri River outpost in the hills of northeast Kansas does. Walking through the historic downtown you can almost imagine a bustling Old West town, a meeting point for railroaders, prospectors, and homesteaders. At the same time, it’s impossible to miss Atchison’s importance as a manufacturing and distribution center.
The Kanza Before Atchison citizens brought prominence to the area as a key frontier town, this was already a great center of commerce. The Kanza Indians, who gave their name to the state, were much like the settlers who came after them — fiercely loyal to their homeland and masters of trade. Lewis & Clark noted the Kanza settlement near Independence Creek during their expedition in 1804. In that year, more than 3,000 4 Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce
people lived in the village at Independence Creek, which made it larger than St. Louis at the time. Eventually, pressure from white settlement, warfare, and disease decreased the Kanza’s numbers. They were forced to the south and eventually to a reservation in present-day Oklahoma.
Lewis & Clark On July 4, 1804, the Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, stopped at the point along the Missouri River that would become the Atchison riverfront. That night, the Corps of Discovery held the first Independence Day celebration in Kansas and the West. The site of their camp is now owned by the Atchison County Historical Society. A re-creation of a Kanza earthlodge, historic markers, and a 10-mile hiking/biking loop cross this official Lewis and Clark Historic Trail campsite.
Settling Kansas and Building Atchison Early pioneers certainly noted the advantage of the area’s geography. Atchison is situated on a great western bend of the Missouri River, 12 miles farther west than any other point on the river to the south. This made Atchison the perfect starting point for westward expansion. Steamboats could drop off travelers here, saving them a day and a half on their journey to the West. Transportation became a key business in the area. The first development began at the meeting of the Atchison Town Company on Sept. 21, 1854. As many of the town company had come from Platte City, Mo., they named the town for David Rice Atchison, a Platte area resident and pro-slavery Missouri senator who was one of the prime supporters of opening the Kansas Territory for settlement. Atchison experienced its first boom in 1855, when Mormon travelers chose the city as the jumping-off point for their migration to Utah.
History More than 2,500 Mormons poured through the city, which barely had a population of 250. The event forced Atchison to build the infrastructure to support the visitors, paving the way for more growth. In 1856, the town company sent out a circular to draw investors. The free-state-supporting New England Emigrant Aid Company and their agent, Samuel C. Pomeroy, saw promise in Atchison and purchased 51 percent of shares in the town company. This ensured the town was in the hands of free-state men, led by Pomeroy, who became Atchison’s first mayor on a coin flip.
Important Visitors and Booming Business In May 1859, New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley, who popularized the phrase “Go West, young man!” saw the West for the first time in Atchison. Greeley began his book detailing his trip to the West with a byline from the Massasoit Hotel in Atchison. On Dec. 2, 1859, Abraham Lincoln addressed a large crowd at the Methodist Church. Ironically, there was no mention in the local newspaper of the event; editor John A. Martin, a prominent Republican who would finish his political career as governor of Kansas, was a supporter of Lincoln rival William Henry Seward. Meanwhile, business was booming; some of those earliest businesses are still in operation. Atchison continued to be a major transportation hub, both as a port for the booming steamboat industry and as the premier wagon train outfitter on the river. In 1872, the city offered $10,000 to anyone who would start up a foundry in the city. John Seaton accepted the offer and moved his foundry from Alton, Ill., to Atchison. By 1900 the Seaton Foundry was one of the nation’s largest and most finely equipped plants, doing work all over the West. That $10,000 investment is
still paying dividends today: Bradken (formerly Atchison Casting) is one of the largest employers in the area. The Overland Stage, which chose Atchison as its eastern terminus, brought with it additional business, traffic, and status. The Pony Express also moved to Atchison, merging with the Overland Stage. But Atchison businessmen were already planning ahead. They had begun to invest in the railroads that would end the Overland Stage’s dominance, but would bring even more prosperity to Atchison.
The Rail Center of Kansas Probably no single thing is more associated with Atchison than the railroad, and nothing is more closely tied than the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (AT&SF). In April 1860, Cyrus K. Holliday received a charter for a new railroad from the Kansas Territorial Legislature. Investors raised approximately $60,000 (roughly $1 million today) to form the Atchison and Topeka Railroad. Though certainly the most famous, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe was not the first railroad in Atchison. In 1859, the Atchison & St. Joseph Railroad made Atchison the westernmost point connected directly by rail to the East Coast. The Atchison and Nebraska Railroad, also laying its first ties in 1859, became part of the first transcontinental railroad. The Atchison & Pikes Peak was also building out of Atchison before the AT&SF made it to the city. By 1870 Atchison was the rail capital of Kansas, but the title was short-lived. In a gaffe that eventually hurt the city, Atchison refused to build a railway bridge over the Missouri, telling the railroads to build their own bridge. That opened the door for Kansas City, Leavenworth, and St. Joseph to build bridges first. Though Atchison quickly realized its mistake and constructed a bridge, its rail dominance began to wane after 1890.

History The Millionaire Town Growing crops is your business. Growing satisfied customers is ours.
In 1890, with the huge profits made in early outfitting, promoting the West, and investments in early transportation ventures, Atchison boasted more millionaires per capita than any place in the world. Dozens of the city’s Victorianera homes are on the National Register of Historic Places, and many of its churches and public buildings are architectural marvels.

Miracle City — The Twin Flash Floods of 1958 Two flash floods in 1958 forced the reshaping of Atchison, wiping out the downtown and other areas throughout the city. The floods and their aftermath were the most significant events in shaping modern Atchison. The first flood hit July 11, 1958, causing water to run through the first floors of almost every store in the city. The damage was bad, but store owners cleaned up and went back to business. However, a second flood hit the town on July 30, devastating the downtown business district. President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared the city a disaster area in record time, and Atchison became the first downtown business district to ever use Urban Renewal funds. Results of the disaster included the development of a watershed dam system that effectively ended periodic flash flooding and the construction of the downtown Pedestrian Mall, a popular shopping destination and a perfect area for festivals, gatherings, and public events.
Modern Atchison Modern Atchison is a mix of old and new. The industry, the millionaire homes, and agriculture are still here, but those long-time businesses have reinvented themselves into modern giants. Heritage tourism has become a vital player in Atchison County, and the community’s devotion to its history can be seen in the new Riverfront, the Independence Creek Lewis & Clark Historic Site, and the always popular Amelia Earhart Festival, honoring the famous aviatrix, the most famous citizen of a town that was once a home for millionaires. The city continues to move into the future while still recognizing the same advantages its founders did. A new Missouri River bridge is slated to be constructed, and improvements are on the way for the Amelia Earhart Airport. Atchison’s location as a transportation hub is still something to take advantage of, just as the founders did 150 years ago.

Something Old, Something New…
By Jay Nehrkorn
Historic Homes Whether or not you believe that the ghosts of past residents still roam historic Atchison, the classically styled homes they left behind bear witness to the fact that they lived quite well. Dozens of homes from the mid-to-late 1800s remain; many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Architectural styles include Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Late Victorian. Location and condition dramatically affect the value of these classic houses, so prices run the gamut. Some sell in the $50,000–$60,000 range, while others cost upwards of $500,000.
Contemporary Subdivisions Home buyers with modern tastes will find several newly developed areas offering houses that are less than 10 years old and that are yet within a three-mile radius of the downtown area. • Upscale homes with three to four bedrooms are available on the northwest edge of town in Brookdale Estates. Living spaces run from 1,700 to over 3,000 square feet, with prices in the $180,000 to $350,000 vicinity. Lots are spacious enough for backyard barbecues, and the lakes and walking trail make
this a nice area for residents who enjoy being outside. • The Heritage Hills neighborhood offers single-family homes that start at around $170,000, as well as comfortable apartments for $350 to $550 per month. • Fairway Townhomes and Park Place offer maintenance-free homes located on or overlooking Bellevue Country Club. Many have a partially or fully finished walk-out basement, and living space varies from 1,700 to 2,400 square feet. These homes feature 50-year-warranty roofs and permanent exteriors, with lawn mowing and snow removal services available through the homeowners association. Prices in both areas are generally in the $180,000 to $250,000 range. • For those who prefer a secluded setting, September Hills Country Estates has custom homes on heavily wooded, 2- to 4-acre lots. Located about three miles south of town on Highway 73, this area provides amenities like a fishing pond and gazebos. Living space within these homes ranges from 2,400 to over 5,000 square feet, with prices starting at around $250,000 and exceeding $500,000.
Purchasing Your New Home Atchison qualifies for government housing loans under the umbrella of the USDA Rural Development Program. While other areas are suffering from a credit crunch, Atchison buyers with acceptable credit can still get direct or guaranteed loans with great terms. In addition to financing home purchase loans, the agency also offers a home repair loan program for repairing and improving existing dwellings.
Renters Those looking for rental property will also find the Atchison housing market to be a targetrich environment. Roughly one-third of Atchison residents live in rented residences, and there is a growing rental market. Houses of all types and sizes, as well as apartments, are available throughout the Atchison area. The Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce maintains an updated list of rental properties submitted by its members. Those interested can pick up a copy at the Santa Fe Depot, 200 S. 10th St., or find the information on the Chamber’s Web site, www.atchisonkansas.net. Several Atchison homes are listed on the National Register.

Tourism & Events
Touched by History By Jason Nichols
Famed pilot Amelia Earhart spent her childhood in Atchison. Her birthplace is now maintained as a museum, and her legacy is celebrated in an annual festival held in July.
I
n Atchison, one can enjoy a romantic getaway with a stay at a bed and breakfast and a stroll through the many unique downtown shops and museums. Or visitors can plan a stay around one of the many annual events that bring the city and its roots to life in a more lively way.
Amelia Earhart Atchison never misses a chance to celebrate the life of its favorite daughter, Amelia Earhart. The pioneering aviatrix was born in Atchison and spent her childhood here with her grandparents. Her Atchison home represents the most tangible remaining link with the famous flyer. The Amelia Earhart Earthwork near Warnock Lake is a 1-acre landscape mural created by famed Kansas artist Stan Herd. Composed of permanent plantings, stone, and other native materials, it was created to celebrate Earhart’s 100th birthday on July 24, 1997. Warnock Lake is also home to the International Forest of Friendship. This living, growing memorial to aviation and aerospace pioneers is comprised of trees representing all 50 states and more than 35 countries. It also includes a National Recreation Trail, trees of historical significance, and a life-sized bronze statue of Amelia Earhart.
Lewis & Clark The famous explorers camped near Atchison on Independence Day, 1804, and Atchison was one of the stops in the series of celebrations commemorating the bicentennial of Lewis & Clark’s expedition in 2004. The Lewis & Clark Pavilion, located on the Atchison riverfront, is a stunning gathering place. There are also historic markers in the city, including one near “July 4 1804 Creek,” which was named by the expedition. The Independence Creek Historic Site, north of Atchison near the Doniphan County line, marks the spot where the expedition camped and celebrated Independence Day.
Pony Express Memorial In this age of instant communication, it’s difficult to comprehend what it was like to communicate over distances in the 1860s. During the winter of 1860, the Pony Express was formed as a way to send mail from St. Joseph, 8 Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce
Tourism & Events Mo., to Sacramento, Calif., in the then unheardof time of 10 days. Atchison, the area’s major send-off point for Westward migration, was an obvious choice to be part of the endeavor. In fact, for part of the short but romantic life of the Pony Express, Atchison was the eastern terminus of the mail line. A granite marker at Third and Main streets commemorates the Pony Express.
Atchison Trolley There is no better introduction to the history of Atchison than a tour aboard the Atchison Trolley. History tours run from April through October, giving visitors a glimpse of Atchison life from the time of the Kanza Indians, through the Old West days and the Industrial Revolution, to modern times. You’ll see spectacular views of the Missouri River and explore the stunning architecture of a town that once had more millionaires per capita than any other city. The Atchison Trolley and RiverCity Coach can be chartered for private tours, and the trolley and coach are also the transportation of choice for Atchison’s many special events, including the Historic Churches of Atchison Tour, the Haunted Atchison Tour, and the Homes for the Holidays Tour.

Paolucci’s has been an Atchison institution since 1894, when brothers Felix and Dominic Paolucci, and Dominic’s wife Rose, came to Atchison from Italy and opened a grocery store. In 1936, when their daughter Mary married Ed Begley, the business became Paolucci & Begley Grocery. In 1983, Mike and Margie Begley opened Paolucci’s Restaurant next door to the grocery and things have taken off since. The restaurant offers a wide array of Italian and American favorites, but now also features a thriving upstairs lounge and a banquet room for large gatherings in its historic building. And, yes, the old-time deli is still a favorite spot for specialty products. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The lounge is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Education Atchison Middle School Preserves the Past and Prepares for the Future Not many pre-teens could say that they attended classes at a college, but all of Atchison Middle School’s students did just that in 2004 when they temporarily swapped their own historic campus for that of the former Mount Saint Scholastica College across town. In the meantime, the historic building they left behind was getting the make-over of the century. Built in 1908, the Atchison Middle School facility had become a very tired, old building that was struggling to serve a very new and energetic generation. So, in 2003, the district’s voters said “yes” to a multimillion-dollar bond initiative to breathe life back into their antiquated school. A rented building at nearby Mount Saint Scholastica provided a place for AMS to hold classes while the renovation took place. The interior of AMS was completely gutted; everything from the wiring to the windows was removed, replaced, and redone. The building’s exterior was restored to preserve its early 20th-century character, and an addition was constructed to provide a new office complex and commons area. AMS moved back into its new, old home in August 2005. In the end, Atchison found that a modern environment within a historic building has created the perfect place to teach a future generation.

Atchison Sports Complex If You Build It, They Will Play.
In 2006, Atchison County citizens had a dream of fields. That same year, a countywide sales tax referendum was passed to make a $5 million investment in an overall $6 million project to build sports complexes in Atchison and Effingham. The plan includes a bathroom/ concession building, six lighted baseball and softball fields, and three soccer/football fields near the grade school in Atchison, as well as one field of each type in Effingham. The community rallied to make the dream a reality through local fundraising and the hands-on help of the local technical center. The Effingham fields opened in the spring of 2009, and they’ll shout “Play ball!” in Atchison in the spring of 2010.

Enjoying Atchison’s Great Outdoors Atchison Named Top Hunting and Fishing Town
In April 2008, Outdoor Life named Atchison one of the top 100 towns for hunters and fishermen. With such an abundance of deer, turkey,
waterfowl, and small game in the area, it’s easy to see why. Most hunting in Atchison County is done by permission on private land, but thanks to a cooperative program between the state and landowners, the county now has over 3,400 acres open to walk-in hunting without fees. Near the river, the well-managed Benedictine Bottoms area has over 2,100 acres that are open in September and available to hunters with specially drawn permits during the rest of the year. The Atchison State Fishing Lake currently offers 136 acres to hunters, and over 1,500 acres of public land will become available in the nearby Dalbey area by 2011. Waterfowl hunters with boats can also utilize the Missouri River. Atchison’s outdoor enthusiasts can also find plenty of good fishing close to home. Atchison State Fishing Lake offers 66 acres of water to enjoy, and the ready availability of boat ramps on the Missouri River make it an obvious place to wet a line. Atchison City also has many public watersheds, and a number of them are specifically managed for outstanding fishing. Residents who like a picnic with a view will want to explore Atchison’s numerous parks. Many have on-site barbeque grills, recently updated (and handicap-accessible) bathrooms, and new playground equipment. For more information about Atchison’s public parks, call 913-367-5561. www.atchisonkansas.net 17
Health Care
Atchison Hospital has broken ground on a new, state-of-the-art facility, which will open in 2010.
A Community of Care Courtesy of Atchison Hospital & Jason Nichols
Atchison Hospital
www.atchisonhospital.org
History and Services Atchison Hospital has delivered quality care to the Atchison community for nearly 100 years. Its mission, to provide excellent health care and improve the quality of life in our community, rings as true today as it did in 1912. The hospital is a fully accredited, nonprofit, 25-bed licensed critical access hospital. It is a full-service hospital with a medical staff of more than 20 physicians and a long list of consulting and specialty doctors. The hospital offers a wide range of care, including obstetrics, intensive care, inpatient and outpatient surgery, 24-hour emergency department and ambulance service, the Courtney S. Turner Diagnostic Imaging Center, rehabilitation, physical therapy, and home health and hospice. Specialty clinics include audiology, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, urology, orthopedics, pulmonology, oncology, rheumatology, and neurology. New Facility Atchison Hospital has been providing health care in its current structure since the organization was formed, with additions and upgrades made as necessary. However, delivery of care is different now than it was when the original hospital was built nearly a century ago, and the organization must also 18 Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce
look toward the future. In early 2010 the hospital will relocate to its new facility, currently under construction. The new facility, located at U.S. Highway 73 and Raven Hill Road in south Atchison, is an 85,000-square-foot, single-story facility with two attached physician office buildings. Atchison Hospital will continue to provide the wide array of services that it currently offers; however, the new single-story design allows all departments to be in close proximity, an increase in efficiency that is entirely patientfocused. It will be the centerpiece of health care, premised on patients and their needs, creating an environment of compassionate care while incorporating the latest technologies for enhanced service, comfort, efficiency, and safety. • The new facility features 25 spacious private patient rooms, each with a bathroom and shower and specific areas dedicated to the patient, visitors, and nursing care. • The 24-hour Emergency Department has its own entrance and parking lot. It has nine beds, seven exam rooms, and two trauma rooms. • The four-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is located in the center of the Acute Care area, making it easier for patients to be transferred to and from the ICU to
other units. All ICU rooms have their own restrooms, and two of the ICU rooms are equipped to handle larger patients. • The large surgical suites have open, comfortable pre-op and post-op areas. The larger surgical area provides space for the video and fiber-optic technology necessary to perform minimally invasive surgery. A new gastrointestinal (GI) lab and an infusion services room are also new additions. • New labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum (LDRP) suites allow expecting moms to remain in the same hotel-like room for all phases of their stay. The nursery is equipped to handle five babies, with a small room added for procedures such as circumcisions. The nurses’ stations are larger and closer to patient rooms, and new technology allows the nursing staff to observe the patient’s bedside fetal monitor from the nurse’s station. LDRP suites are located right next to the operating rooms, which makes cesarean sections much more convenient for the patient. • The Courtney S. Turner Diagnostic Imaging Center’s equipment will move to the new facility; therefore, none of the funds donated to purchase the equipment were lost.
Health Care • The Ramsay Chapel will be relocated to the new facility, as well as the Reflections Garden, including all plantings and components. As the leading health care provider in the Atchison community since 1912, Atchison Hospital has a tradition of providing exceptional care — a tradition the organization is proud of and plans to continue, not just for today, but also for tomorrow and 50 years from now.

Atchison County Economic Development Board In 2006, the City of Atchison and Atchison County entered into an inter-local cooperation agreement to form the Atchison County Economic Development Board. The board, 20 Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce
comprised of appointees from the city and county, works to facilitate economic growth and retention in the Atchison area. According to Economic Development Director Christy Isaacs, the board is in a unique position in the area. “[The city and county] understand the importance of having an economic development entity, but neither felt it was something Atchison County Court House they could afford to put full funding into,” she said. “It’s really the only completely collaborative board in the county. “The vision is that Atchison County will be prosperous, inviting, exciting, energetic, and enterprising,” Isaacs continued. “Our mission is to apply entrepreneurial leadership to unleash prosperity through careful investments and human resources, infrastructure, and innovative initiatives.” Major areas of the board’s focus are business attraction, business retention, and entrepreneurial leadership. The board is always on the lookout for new business, furthering entrepreneurial efforts in the area and bringing in new companies from elsewhere while keeping existing businesses prosperous. “It’s a three-legged stool,” Isaacs said. “Business attraction is the ‘sexy’ part that everybody hears about, [but] the core of it will always be business retention and expansion. That’s the everyday part — keeping those businesses here and prosperous. If we’re not doing something to retain them, they are a business attraction project to every other community in the country.” The economic downturn beginning in 2008 didn’t spare Atchison, but Isaacs said the Economic Development Board was still able to play a role. Though Isaacs admitted the organization cannot prevent reductions and other measures taken by businesses during tough times, they can advise businesses and help employees find the services they need to get them through rough patches. Tough economic times didn’t halt new business attraction or entrepreneurial ventures in Atchison. A CVS Pharmacy is scheduled to open late in 2009, and several new local businesses have sprung up in 2008–09.

Strong Ties to Faith
A
tchison is a small town that goes about its business in a big way, whether it’s the town’s industry, its festivals, or promoting its history. Worship is no different. Atchison is home to dozens of churches serving a wide array of faiths and styles of worship. And the history connected to those churches is intertwined with the city’s fascinating story. As visitors cross the Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge into town from the east, they see the grand façade of Trinity Episcopal Church, one of the oldest in the state. Few know, however, that the church’s Memorial
By Jason Nichols
Garden is listed on the registry of Kansas Quiet Gardens. The First Christian Church was built in 1913. Its sanctuary is topped with a magnificent golden dome and the circular-shaped room is ringed by stained-glass windows. As you drive north on 2nd Street, the unmistakable twin towers of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church provide a monumental entrance to the campus of Benedictine College. A handful of Atchison’s most historic and interesting churches are featured each year on the Historic Churches of Atchison Tour. The two-hour tour gives visitors an inside look at
these historic structures and their congregations, guided by longtime members of those communities. Transportation to the various locations comes courtesy of another Atchison landmark — the Atchison Trolley. Atchison has strong ties to the Benedictine monks and sisters who came to the area as educators when pioneers began to settle here, and visitors are welcome to tour both of these historic locations — the Mount St. Scholastica Monastery and St. Benedict’s Abbey Church. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the Abbey Church, which is full of small chapels, altars, and magnificent works of art in addition to the impressive main chapel. The abbey crypt, or basement, features 27 altars, including small chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Joseph the Worker, and St. Scholastica. Benedictine sisters first arrived in Atchison in 1863 at the request of the monks already living here. They opened the Mount St. Scholastica Academy for girls the same year. Visitors can call the sisters to arrange a guided tour of the campus, which includes two stunning chapels — the St. Scholastica Chapel and the Choir Chapel — along with a stunning array of architecture and art throughout the facility. The Choir Chapel features facing choir stalls and beautiful stained-glass windows that blend traditional realism and modern symbolism. The windows even have their own color, Atchison Blue, which was created specially for the chapel. A walk through the St. Scholastica Chapel is a grand experience. The stained-glass windows, marbled sanctuary, and organ will leave visitors breathless.

Our Ghostly Neig hbors By Jason Nichols
Sometimes, if you look down into Molly’s Hollow from a spot overlooking Jackson Park, you can make out the unmistakable shape of a tragic young lady, hanged by the neck from a tree. Walking through the historic Santa Fe Depot, you might hear strange noises or see lights coming on or shutting off without warning. And most who move into the famous Sallie House move out just as quickly. Yes, Atchison is haunted — but the citizens don’t seem to mind. Every year, “the most haunted town in Kansas” celebrates everything spooky, eerie, strange, and downright scary with an array of tours and events that will please everyone, from paranormal experts to those who think it’s all just a hoax. After some time in Atchison, they all believe something interesting is going on here. The quickest way to explore the paranormal happenings in Atchison is the annual Haunted Atchison Tour. View the stunning Victorian homes that come with resident spirits. Shiver as you hear the stories of disembodied voices, cursed gargoyles, and the many things that go “bump” in the Atchison night. And then there are the special events. Have “A Ghostly Dining Experience,” during which you will hear from famed spiritualist Glennie Turner. Take a walking tour of one of Atchison’s historic cemeteries, or go on our History/Mystery Walking Tour. Attend Turner’s program, “Awakening What Lies Within.” And if you’re really brave, try our On-Site Investigations, during which you get the chance to stay inside one of our haunted buildings to explore and investigate the paranormal. For up-to-date information on all of Atchison’s haunted happenings, check out www.atchisonkansas.net. Atchison’s turn-of-thecentury McInteer Villa, featured on the trolley tour, is reportedly the site of creaky footsteps, mysteriously slamming doors, and ghostly figures roaming the tower.
Ghosts and goblins are on parade through downtown Atchison, receiving trick-or-treat goodies and prizes when visiting participating businesses. December Homes for the Holidays Tour 913-367-2427 • www.atchisonkansas.net
