“We are actively identifying opportunities to better serve our members.”

A

t the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, “we are providing positive leadership throughout the Brush Valley region.” This mission has led the Chamber to be involved in a number of groundbreaking initiatives in the area, such as the development of an $18 million industrial park and a new focus on green energy initiatives. Tom Harlow, president of the Chamber and CEO of Shamokin Area Community Hospital, said the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce has seen a resurgence in the past few years in developing new opportunities for business and industry and for improving the region. “They have focused on green energy and local transportation issues, as well as on health, education, and wellness initiatives,” he said. “They have truly broadened the expanse of the Chamber in the region and are a true patron and advocate in the Brush Valley region.” Harlow says the Chamber is partnering with other chambers of commerce in the area to create energy pools to enable businesses to purchase energy at a reduced cost. “We are actively identifying opportunities to better serve our members,” he said. “We are also creating green energy initiatives designed to bring alternative energy firms to the region and help the area find its place in energy development.” One new project, the Keystone Energy Technology Center (KETEC) in Mount Carmel, was created as a “brain trust” to develop mixed-use businesses that include a focus on alternative renewable energy strategies. The goal is to bring young entrepreneurial companies into an incubator for two years and then release them as independent companies. KETEC is one of the first such centers in Pennsylvania and the country with a focus on alternative renewable energy. The Brush Valley area was born on energy, through coal mining, and the goal is to recapture and renew that heritage and create new opportunities on a statewide and national level. www.brushvalleychamber.com

This premier office space will offer business support services to startups, including financial, high-speed Internet, graphic design, marketing, copying, fax, and telephone services, as well as flexible office and lab space to enable them to do research and development. An advisory board composed of representatives from business and education will help mentor these young businesses and connect them with the expertise they need to get their businesses off the ground. Warren Altomare, chair of the Chamber’s Economic and Government Affairs Subcommittee and owner of Family Home Medical, said, “The Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce continues to spearhead economic growth, advocate for the region through our governmental affairs initiatives, and provide new and exciting

services to our membership. The Chamber tirelessly promotes the region’s vibrant entrepreneurial work ethic in an effort to showcase the region’s economic, educational, and social potential.”

Pennsylvania’s Targeted Industry Clusters In 2008, Pennsylvania’s Workforce Development Task Force redefined the Commonwealth’s Targeted Industry Clusters, adding two sectors to the nine originally identified in 2004. Each of these clusters consists of a group of industries that are closely linked by common product markets, labor pools, similar technologies, supply chains, and/or other economic ties. The clusters were chosen based on the potential for growth or their overall importance to the stability of Pennsylvania’s economy. The 11 clusters include: • Advanced Materials and Diversified Manufacturing • Agriculture and Food Production • Bio-Medical • Building and Construction

Including the communities of Shamokin, Coal Township, Mt. Carmel, Kulpmont, Elysburg, Ralpho Township, Trevorton, and Paxinos, Brush Valley enjoys the best of both worlds by being in a scenic natural environment close to many major cities, but just far enough away to keep a “home town” feeling. Brush Valley offers a varied housing market, from charming older homes to modern subdivisions with numerous incentives and amenities.
