The cache valley lifestyle

More “Culture Per Capita” Professionals find rewarding careers and lifestyles in Cache Valley.

W

hen you think of northern Utah, you might envision a landscape of wide valleys dotted with cattle ranches and surrounded by magnificent mountain ranges. Outdoor fun, such as skiing or fly-fishing, may also come to mind because of the huge expanse of unspoiled public lands. Or, you might even think of Utah’s reputation for generous hospitality. In the case of Cache Valley you’d be right on all three counts, but there are so many other great features to talk about. Rewarding career opportunities, a wealth of cultural activities, and outstanding educational infrastructure are also part of the mix. And, as an MSA of over 100,000 people,

Logan and its surrounding communities support a variety of quality shopping and dining options as well. Put it all together and Cache Valley offers an excellent lifestyle that continues to draw new residents to the area. One of those relative newcomers is Gary Wagner, a Chicago native who has lived and worked in Akron, Ann Arbor, Boston, and Sacramento. Wagner is president of U.S. operations at Ophir-Spiricon’s North Logan facility, which produces high-tech intensity measurement and control units for laser equipment. He came to the area three years ago and fell in love with Cache Valley’s easy access to outdoor recreation such as hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, hunting, and world-class fly-fishing. “I’ve had opportunities to move back to a large city, but I like this environment, where I can mix the things that I like to do outside, equally as well as making more money in a big city,” he explained. “I grew up hunting and fishing and started getting back into that when I lived in Sacramento, but you had to drive two or three hours to get to it. Here it’s only 20 to 40 minutes away.” Beyond the beauty of the area, Wagner is equally impressed by the region’s cultural and business environment. He says that Cache Valley has more “culture per capita” than almost any other place in the country when it comes to performing arts and that the business community is equally active in terms of developing opportunities. “The Chamber has worked really hard to bring economic development to the Valley, and if you get into the community of business people here that are really promoting growth, it’s a very active group,” he stated. “It’s

The cache valley lifestyle

amazing for the size of the community how there are multiple places you can go for nurturing and growing your business or business knowledge.” Another Midwestern transplant is Adrienne Akers, who came to the Valley with her husband after graduating from St. Louis University in Missouri. Her love affair with northern Utah now spans over three decades, and like Wagner, it was the environment that first won her over. Akers found Cache Valley to be a land of opportunity, and her former position as a senior researcher at USU has led to a rewarding new career. She is now president and CEO of Dynamic Screening Solutions Inc., which spun off from an innovative grant program she wrote for USU. Akers’ company spun out in 2007 based on her award-winning technology, which allows families to automatically populate data into applications for multiple agencies through a single website. The company recently launched an HR system based on the original concept, recruiting new talent from USU. Giving credit to USU and a helpful business community for her company’s success, she “pays forward” the help that she receives by serving as co-chair of the Cache Entrepreneurial Council.

Beyond the beauty of the area, Wagner is equally impressed by the region’s cultural and business environment. Logan, Utah, has been consistently rated among the top 10 safest metropolitan areas by Morgan Quinto, and having grown up in Chicago, Akers didn’t overlook the benefit of safe neighborhoods while her children were growing up. She also says that the friends they’ve made and having excellent neighbors has made life in the Valley even more appealing.

Medical Momentum

/// By Amanda Knoles

Collaboration is bringing prosperity to the Cache Valley bioscience industry.

C

NNMoney magazine rated Cache County No. 10 in its 2010 “Where The Jobs Are” rankings, citing its diverse economy, including medical services, high-tech research, education, and manufacturing. In 2009 the magazine rated Logan No. 14 on its list of “Best Places to Launch A Business.” According to Ned Weinshenker, vice president of strategic ventures and economic

4 Cache Chamber of Commerce

development at Utah State University, the Innovation Campus at USU’s research park helps facilitate the synergy that exists among medical companies and research facilities in the region. The high-tech research park is home to both established businesses and startups, with new companies frequently springing out of research and development projects under way.

Brent Miller, vice president for research at Utah State University, explained, “Faculty across the university in various areas are doing research that becomes useful to medically related companies. This can come in the form of a discovery or invention that gets licensed to an existing company or that becomes the basis for a new startup company organized around that technology.” HyClone Laboratories was one of the early medical-related businesses in Cache Valley that grew out of USU faculty expertise. Founded in 1967 by Dr. Rex Spendlove, a professor at Utah State, HyClone was acquired by Fisher Scientific in 2003 and in 2006 merged with Thermo Scientific to form Thermo Fisher Scientific. Today HyClone provides a significant share of the world market with bio culture media and single-use sterile bag systems. Spendlove Medical Research Institute, founded in 1989 through an endowment established by Dr. Spendlove and his family, supported outside researchers until 1997, when it began developing its own research projects. Christian Iverson, vice president, explained that one of the important advances coming out of the institute is a multiplex ELISA technology that is faster, easier, and far less expensive than traditional testing platforms. “This technology

Industry

has been used by many researchers to gain better understanding of the biochemical processes in the body, which will translate to more accurate and early diagnosis of disease,” Iverson said. Quansys Biosciences, a Spendlove spinoff company, was formed to commercialize the technology and bring it to the research and clinical communities. “Through the commercial success of Quansys, the institute receives royalty payments that help fund our own research and development programs,” Iverson said. “We are very open to the idea of collaborating with local companies to further develop technology,” Iverson added. “One of our primary missions is to aid in the economic development of Cache Valley and the state of Utah, and we feel collaborations are critical to fulfilling this mission.” Innovative Medical Device Solutions (IMDS) provides comprehensive product development, manufacturing, and supply chain management solutions for medical device companies, with a focus on the orthopedic industry. Servicing the top 10 orthopedic companies in the world, IMDS partners with innovative orthopedic surgeons to develop the next generation of medical technologies. Doug Lorang, general manager of co-innovation, noted that IMDS collaborated with Utah State University in the development of a laser-based metal deposition technology for use in total joint replacement implant manufacturing. “Rarely do you find a world-class, medicalrelated company in a location that affords such quality of life as Cache Valley,” Lorang said. “Many of our employees moved from medical device hotbeds, such as the San Francisco Bay area, Philadelphia, and Michigan, just for this quality of life. Utah State University provides

us with a talented pool of potential interns, and Logan Regional and Cache Valley Specialty Hospitals give us the opportunity to work with local physicians on various projects.” VentureMD is a seed-stage medical device business accelerator operating from the USU Innovation Campus. According to Wade Fallin, CEO, the company finds or creates promising medical device technologies and provides funding and management to launch new companies. Fallin has been involved in eight startups to date, including two companies started in 2010 by VentureMD. The company also works closely with the USU Research Department to find opportunities for collaboration in which USU technologies can be applied to the medical device industry.

“We are seeing the emergence of a sustainable medical device industry here in Cache Valley,” Fallin noted. Examples of VentureMD startups include IMDS and Paragon Medical, leading contract manufacturers to the orthopedic and spine technology industries; Pinnacle Precision and Apex Engineering & Machine, highly skilled sub-contractors of machined components; and BluePool Designs and Zigg Design, talented product development firms. “Together, these companies create a thriving business ecosystem,” Fallin said. “We anticipate that the companies started by VentureMD will routinely partner with its neighbors here in Cache Valley and hopefully contribute to the continued growth and success of our local medical device industry.”

American West Heritage Center AWHC is preserving the pioneer lifestyle.

S

outhwest of Logan is a destination that’s as much about time as it is about place. Located along U.S. Highway 89, the American West Heritage Center (AWHC) brings the sights, sounds, and experiences of northern Utah’s past back to life for thousands of visitors each year. “We’re an outdoor museum of folk life and living history,” said Program Director David Sidwell, “and we try, through hands-on activities, to preserve and celebrate the heritage of our area here. We have events throughout the year, and we also have our daily adventures in the summer on Tuesdays through Thursdays, where

/// By Jay Nehrkorn

people of all ages can come out and do handson activities that are fun and that help them remember the past.” The AWHC has grown over the years to encompass a variety of venues representing different eras of Cache Valley’s history. The center began in 1980 as the Jensen Historical Farm, a working, vintage-1917 farm that gives visitors the chance to experience agriculture in action as it was accomplished in the olden days. Today, AWHC also provides an authentic example of an 1850s pioneer settlement, a look at old-fashioned wood-working techniques in the Woodwright Shop, a camping area, rides on their new quarter-scale train, and lessons about the influence of fur trading on the region at the Mountain Man Camp. Nearby, the Martin Ford Oxen Barn highlights the vital role oxen played for the pioneers and showcases mortise and tenon construction methods used nearly two centuries ago. The events schedule and educational programs at AWHC give history fans something to look forward to year-round. In the springtime, Baby Animal Days is a big draw as the farm celebrates the miracle of life through its new

generation of livestock. Summer is the time for daily living history adventures, Wild West Shakespeare performances, and the Pioneer Jubilee. As the heat gives way to harvest and winter, the center celebrates Farmtastic Fall and offers unique gatherings such as the Victorian Christmas Feast and the Victorian Valentine Vaudeville Show. Educational programs for schools in the spring and fall include tours with stations that get the kids involved in seasonal farm activities performed in years past. Thanks to the center’s continued growth in venues and programs, attendance has quadrupled since 2006 to reach around 80,000 guests annually.

For serene scenery, relaxing rides, or high-adventure experiences, Cache National Forest is an outdoor wonderland.

T

he panoramic beauty of Cache Valley and the mountainous terrain that surrounds it begs to be explored, and outdoor enthusiasts will find that the region offers a wide spectrum of activities that will allow them to connect with nature. Residents and visitors in Cache Valley find themselves just minutes away from the vast and rugged beauty of the Cache National Forest. The forest encompasses over 700,000 acres — including two wilderness areas — in northern Utah and southern Idaho, and it is highlighted by the Logan Canyon National Scenic Byway.

10 Cache Chamber of Commerce

Winding its way from Logan to the Bear Lake area, this stretch of U.S. Highway 89 offers access to campgrounds, picnic facilities, and a good network of roads for off-road vehicle adventures. Along the way, trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders lead to hundreds of geocaching spots and natural wonders such as wind caves and the forest’s famous 1,500 year old juniper tree. Just off the Scenic Byway, outdoor thrillseekers can find year-round adventure in Cache National Forest.

The area is one of the top destinations in the country for winter recreation, and its groomed snowmobile trails and off-trail snowmobiling are consistently rated in the top 15 in the nation. Skiing and snowboarding are also popular on the trail systems, including excellent back-country skiing at the higher elevations, and the canyon is home to the nation’s longest-running familyowned ski resort at Beaver Mountain. As winter gives way to springtime, kayaking along the Blacksmith Fork and Logan rivers can be exciting, relaxing, or both, depending on water levels. In warmer months, the forest offers

Recreation, culture, & Entertainment

terrific rock-climbing, including opportunities for climbers of any skill level in the lower Logan Canyon and challenging overhanging faces for experienced climbers. The national forest is truly a gem for wildlife viewers, fishermen, and hunters. The region is home to countless species of birds, with the Wellsville Mountain Wilderness area providing a unique opportunity to view the annual migration of kestrels, goshawks, golden eagles, and other raptors each autumn. Fishermen will enjoy the glacial Tony Grove Lake and fly-fishing along the Logan River for several species of trout, while licensed hunters may pursue game animals such as elk, moose, mule deer, upland birds, and wild turkey. Outside the national forest, the region offers other adventures: • At 20 miles long and 8 miles wide, the turquoise waters of Bear Lake are a

waterskiing, fishing, sailing, and scuba diving destination. • Cutler Marsh, featuring the Cutler Wetlands Maze, is a premier location for canoeing and bird watching. • South of Logan, Hyrum and Mantua reservoirs provide more chances for fishing, boating, camping, and swimming. • Bear River has prime fishing, including channel catfish, walleye, largemouth bass, and crappie.

Inspiring Art

Cache Valley cultivates creativity.

M

aybe it’s the natural beauty of the region, or perhaps some kind of inspirational synergy, but whatever the reason, Cache Valley has become the home of an amazing flurry of creativity. Anchored by magnificent venues, professional galleries, and USU’s fine arts programs, the Valley’s artistic community and cultural attractions rival the quality and variety of those found in larger metropolitan areas. At the heart of this artistic enlightenment is the Cache Valley Center for the Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the cultural enrichment of the community. Through art education programs, exhibits, presentations, and partnerships with other cultural organizations, the center brings a host of quality visual and performing arts experiences to the community each year. The CVCA also manages and operates three arts venues in Logan: the Ellen Eccles Theatre, the Bullen Center, and the ThatcherYoung Mansion. Built in 1923, the historic and beautifully restored Ellen Eccles Theatre is the organization’s centerpiece. With seating for 1,100 and excellent acoustics, it hosts a broad

spectrum of productions by regional and national performers. Here are just a few of the many other cultural organizations that entertain and inspire Cache Valley residents: • American Festival Chorus features a an over 260-person choir and a 50-person orchestra that offers performances year-round to the community and region. •  Based in Mendon, the Bridger Folk Music Society provides frequent acoustic music concerts as well as informal acoustic jam sessions at a variety of venues in the Logan area. • Cache Valley Civic Ballet has a repertoire of ballets performed by auditioned regional dancers. They also operate a ballet school and offer Pilates, tap, and dance exercise classes. • Cache Regional Theatre Company presents one to two large musicals per year at the Ellen Eccles www.cachechamber.com
