Welcome H

istoric Carlinville, Illinois, has been called one of the “Best Small Towns in America.” Warm and welcoming, the community of Carlinville is centered on its picturesque town square, home to historic buildings, quaint shops and restaurants, and a beautiful gazebo. The city is also the seat of Macoupin County and is home to the majestic Macoupin County Courthouse, one of the largest in the country. Carlinville offers small-town Americana at its best. Residents gather for summer concerts in the town square, cheer on top high school athletes, and gather to celebrate and share at the annual Christmas Market. A walk along shaded streets will introduce visitors to neighborhoods of Victorian manses, stately brick Federals and, unique to the American dream of home ownership, retro Sears homes. Visitors can even retrace the original path of the Mother Road, Route 66. And, at just 1.5 hours from St. Louis and an hour from the Illinois state capital, Springfield, Carlinville is at the heart of regional metropolitan action. We welcome you to take a short tour of our community in the following pages — we think you’ll be inspired to explore further in person. Welcome to Carlinville!

Play & Explore Historic Attractions* Anderson Mansion www.macsociety.org

Purchased and refurbished by the Macoupin County Historical Society, the Victorian Anderson Mansion is open for tours. Furnished with period pieces, the mansion offers an intimate glimpse at life in the 1800s. The 13-room house features two large double-columned porches, two elaborate bay windows, eight fireplaces, a large stained-glass window, folding window shutters, and solid oak staircases, woodwork, and pocket doors. Outer buildings include an authentic schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and a print shop. There is also an herb garden. In addition to tours, the grounds are available for weddings and other gatherings. Loomis House Located on the Carlinville Square, the Loomis House was completed in 1870 and designed by E.E. Meyers, the architect who designed both the Macoupin County Courthouse and the Macoupin County Jail. Built by Judge Thaddeus L. Loomis, who had played a major role in the construction of the “Million Dollar Courthouse,” the building first opened as a hotel, with 50 rooms on three floors and a large dining area. The building has been well preserved and is now home to several businesses. Macoupin County Courthouse Completed in 1870 at the-then staggering price tag of $1,342,226.31, the Macoupin County Courthouse was aptly nicknamed the “Million Dollar Courthouse” by area residents. According to legend, city fathers at the time decided to “go big” with the courthouse because they thought

that Carlinville was in the running to become the state capital. Also according to legend, the cost may have been inflated by misappropriation; the Loomis House was constructed of limestone “left over” from the courthouse project, while the county clerk boarded a train out of town one night in 1870, never to be heard from again. One of the two largest courthouses in the nation at the time of its construction, the Macoupin County Courthouse’s 191-foot gleaming dome is visible from across town. The Renaissance Revival masterpiece boasts an exterior constructed from gold-colored blocks of stone and a portico with 40-foot Corinthian columns. Inside you’ll find elaborate woodwork, including finely carved walnut seating; a judge’s bench of Italian marble; and ornately decorated rooms with arched doorways. Abraham Lincoln occasionally practiced law in Macoupin County (although it was at the current courthouse’s less glamorous predecessor). Court documents with his signature are on file in the courthouse. Macoupin County Jail Built in 1869, the Macoupin County Jail most closely resembles a medieval castle. The stone-block structure was built with apartments for the jailer and his family above the jail, a common practice in the 19th century. The cell block’s ceiling, walls, and floor are constructed of one-inch iron plates with 20 inches of solid stone above and below. The structure was retired from use in 1988 after the construction of a new county jail. Standard Addition In 1917, the population of Carlinville grew by one-third when Standard Oil of Indiana opened two new mines in the area. Faced with

A large stone marker at the corner of South Broad and East First South streets commemorates a speech delivered on August 31, 1858, by Abraham Lincoln during his campaign for the U.S. Senate against Stephen A. Douglas.

the need to house its new employees, Standard Oil officials turned to a uniquely American solution: the Sears & Roebuck catalog. Sears catalog customers could order build-it-yourself home kits, completed with some 30,000 labeled parts, instructions for construction, and even two small trees for the front yard. Standard Oil placed an order for 156 of the kits for Carlinville; within a year, all had been assembled. The kits represented eight varieties of Sears’ “modest”-style homes, including the Carlin, a five-room house named in honor of Carlinville. Standard sold the finished houses under contract for deed to the miners; the cost to purchase was $3,000 for a five-room house and $4,000 for six rooms. Unfortunately, the mines closed just six years later, and the neighborhood was desolate for a time. However, the Standard Addition enjoyed new life in 1935, when Standard Oil sold the houses for $350 (five rooms) and $500 (six rooms) cash each. Even in the midst of the Depression, comparable homes were selling for $4,000, so it was an incredible bargain for lucky buyers. Amazingly, 152 of these homes still stand, making the nine-block Standard Addition the largest single group of Sears Homes in the nation. Many of the families living in the homes have thoughtfully restored and improved their houses in respect of their heritage. Architects and visitors come from around the country each year to view this unique feature of Carlinville. *Sources: Carlinville Community Chamber of Commerce; Illinois State Bar Association; Macoupin County Historical Society; Old House Web

Every July, the fun of a traditional county fair comes to Carlinville. Billed as the “Oldest County Fair in Illinois” and celebrating its 157th year in 2010, the fair is a true slice of Americana, featuring such traditional attractions as livestock and 4-H shows, arts and crafts exhibits, horse racing, tractor pulls, a demolition derby, pageants, and a carnival for the kids. Carlinville Christmas Market

www.carlinvillechristmasmarket.com

Just seven miles southwest of Carlinville is Beaver Dam State Park, a 750-acre wooded preserve that boasts a variety of activities for the whole family. The oak-hickory forest is home to a multitude of wildlife, and visitors may catch glimpses of deer, foxes, raccoons, grey squirrels, and wild turkeys. Bird watchers gather here to view hawks, owls, and woodpeckers, as well as a variety of songbirds, including bluebirds, orioles, finches, cardinals, titmice, nuthatches, chickadees, peewees, and cuckoos. Waterfowl visit the lake seasonally. The centerpiece of the park is, of course, the lake, which covers 59 acres and offers boating and fishing. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, and channel catfish, and a free boat launch and docks are available for public use. No gas engines are allowed. A concession stand on the lake is open April through October, offering food, live bait, tackle, fishing licenses, and boat rental. On land, enjoy hiking on eight miles of trails, leading both through forested areas and around the lake. Picnic areas and playgrounds make the park a great destination for a day of family fun. A trailer camping area has electricity at each pad, a sanitary dump, and showers and restrooms; tent camping is also an option.

The first full weekend of December, the Carlinville square is transformed into a holiday wonderland. First held in 1990, the Carlinville Christmas Market was originally managed by the Chamber of Commerce. Since 2006, planning has been overseen by the Christmas Market Foundation, a nonprofit group of local civic leaders. To step into the Christmas Market is to step into a nostalgic holiday ideal. Visitors can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides; trolley tours of historic sites; costumed carolers and street performers; drama, music, and dance presentations; artists and craftsmen showing their wares; and children’s activities. The delicious aromas of holiday favorites and hearty fare from food booths fill the air as you stroll past elegant ice carvings. And it all takes place amidst the perfect charm of historic downtown Carlinville. The event attracted more than 11,000 visitors in 2008, becoming the county’s only million-dollar event. The Christmas Market has been featured on St. Louis television news broadcasts as well as in the nationally circulated Midwest Living magazine.
