Welcome
Welcome
From the Chamber of Commerce
A
s Executive Director of the Fayette County Chamber, I am often asked what makes Fayette County so special. The answer is multi-faceted. It could be that we are the third-largest county in the state of Tennessee and home to nine cities while still remaining a mostly rural county with an agricultural heritage. Perhaps our small towns, rich history, antebellum homes, new upscale neighborhoods and expansive farms with beautiful acreage are the draw. The Wolf River is another gem, known for its bird watching and its scenic tours offered by canoe. Or it could be our strategic location, low taxes, access to great road systems and rail — with the largest Norfolk Southern intermodal facility — combined with our close proximity to
Memphis International Airport and the International Port of Memphis. In the last 10 years, Fayette County has enjoyed inclusion on the state’s fastest-growing county list while the Town of Oakland was listed as the fastest-growing city. Nationally, Fayette is ranked among the “100 fastest-growing” counties in the country. Fayette County is home to industries such as Memphis Contract Packaging, AOC’s World Headquarters, Kellogg’s, Troxel, Coilmaster Corporation and many more. With continued growth in residential, retail, small business and industry, the Chamber’s role is evolving. While serving as the lead Economic Development Agency for Fayette County, we are relied on as a dependable source of accurate and
useful information to city and county officials, for relocation interests, and as a resource to small business and industry for expansion. With plans for a Fayette County Higher Education Center underway, the focus on improving education levels and job skills will help make Fayette County more attractive when recruiting new industry. Fayette is a county on the GROW. On behalf of Fayette County, its cities and its citizens, I welcome you to our community and invite you to come grow with us. Whether you are looking for a home for your family or your business, Fayette County has a lot to offer. Julie Perrine, Executive Director The Fayette County Chamber of Commerce

Terry manages the restaurant’s menu, and the influence of his home state of Louisiana shows in the dishes they serve. Best known for their catfish, they also serve entrees featuring shrimp, fresh oysters, stuffed crab, clams and chicken. But the food isn’t the only thing that draws customers from Memphis, Covington, Somerville and other surrounding towns — it’s also the nostalgic building and decor.
“We maintained as much of the original building as we possibly could — the floors, the shelving and the stairways,” said JoAnne. “I even advise customers to sit on the other side of the table the next time they come back so that they can look at all the objects on the wall and on the shelves, because the shelves are full of memorabilia. People will say, ‘Oh I remember my mother using one of those’ or ‘I remember this or that’ and it takes them back.” Braden Station is open for business, and memories, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Today it fulfills yet another purpose as the home of Braden Station, a restaurant specializing in catfish, seafood and fond memories. Gallaway Summer Fun for the Young
G
allaway youths ages 4 to 14 don’t need to pack their bags or dig into mom and dad’s wallets for a summer camp experience. From kickball and basketball to crafts and story time, the summer camp program in Gallaway is designed to give children activities that fill their vacation mornings with safe and constructive fun. Once a city-sponsored program, Gallaway Summer Camp transitioned completely to private funding through local donors two years ago. The program now falls entirely under the umbrella of First Baptist Church of Gallaway, which has provided a semi-volunteer senior staff and organized manpower for the camp since day one. Each year the camp hires a few local high school students who have outgrown the program to help out, offering them a job opportunity close to home that includes life lessons and development of leadership skills. Aside from that, it’s the volunteers who really make the program possible, and those volunteers come from a variety of places.

he community of Hickory Withe was first established as a settlement in the 1830s, being known at the time as Hickory Grove for the many trees at the site. But the name “Withe” — which is defined as a tough yet flexible twig or stem for binding things together — is the one that ultimately stuck, and it turned out to be an apt choice. The families of this residential and largely agricultural community are, in fact, strongly bound together, yet flexible enough to be inviting to new neighbors. “The strength of our community is in the character of the people here, and that it’s very neighborly,” said Hickory Withe Community Association President John Thorpe. As the gateway community at the western entry to Fayette County, the Hickory Withe erected new signs on Highway 196 in 2012 to highlight the message they’ve been sending for more than 175 years: You’re welcome here.

“We have mission teams from all over the U.S. take a week and come in to help us out,” said program organizer Becky Jackman. “The kids love having visitors. What our groups usually find out is that our kids welcome them very quickly, especially if they can push them on a swing.” Daily activities for the kids offer structure but are mostly centered around play. Still, there are craft projects and other enriching activities available to help them stay sharp during the summer months. “We have someone who reads with the kids whenever they want to. We don’t want to force them, seeing as it is their break, but we do have someone who can read with them, and there are multiplication flash cards available,” Jackman explained. “We don’t focus much on academics as a general rule, but if we have a child who needs special attention in a certain area based on what we know from the school year and what we hear from the parents, we will make sure that child gets some extra academic encouragement during the summer.” The camp runs from 7 a.m. to noon daily, with breakfast and lunch provided by Northwest Elementary School. La Grange Restoring a Historic Jewel
M
ost structures can be rebuilt, but a historic building can never be replaced. When one is lost, there is no way to transfer the stories or the feelings it evoked to whatever may come along to take its place. And while the communities of Fayette County are home to many historic homes, Mary Jean Smith saw something special and worth saving in the La Grange house known as “Tiara.” “That house has a lot of history,” Smith explained. “I’m in the real estate business and my company had the house listed, and it was just about to fall down. I did not want to see that happen, so I bought it. I just didn’t know at the time that it was going to be such a large project.” The 5,100-square-foot home was originally built in 1845 by Frank Cossitt, who owned several plantations and whose family was well known in the region. In the early to mid 1860s, during the dark days of the Civil War, Cossitt moved northward from Tennessee; he is credited with developing the town of La Grange, Ill., in the years that
followed. Meanwhile, his Tiara home — so named for the distinctive, windowed cupola that adorns the roof like a shining crown when lit — served as a hospital as the war raged on. Following Cossitt’s departure, ownership of the home passed through several different families across a number of generations before finally coming to the Smiths in 2007. Since that time they’ve done a full restoration of the home’s exterior and of the interior lower level, which features a double parlor with connecting pocket doors, 12.5-foot ceilings, original heart pine floors and restored furnishings. Following a Tennessee State Historic Commission tour in June 2012, which served as a “kick-off” event for the Smiths, the completed lower level was made available to rent for a variety of gatherings such as reservation-only dinners, book readings, music recitals, weddings and receptions. “My husband has planned and supervised all of the restoration,” Smith said. “He is also a rose enthusiast and has planted a rose garden of 200 bushes on
the back lawn. So we’ll probably host some things having to do with different rose societies as well.” Since the beginning, the Smiths’ plan for the Tiara restoration has included four upstairs bedrooms and baths; once those are completed the business will begin to operate as a full-fledged bedand-breakfast. While there is no set timeframe for that portion of the project, it is ongoing and could potentially be completed in 2013. While operating a historic meeting space and place of lodging were not lifelong goals for the Smiths, the Tiara home itself seems to have drawn them into it. Mrs. Smith said that the project is, indeed, a labor of love, then laughingly adds, “or one of folly.” But kidding aside, their passion to preserve a unique place for people to enjoy has brought about beautiful results, and Tiara still has a glowing future to complement its storied past.

hile its history includes a chapter from our nation’s darkest era, Moscow’s current legacy of industry and service to others sets the tone for a vibrant future. Moscow is well-known among Civil War buffs for the Battle of Moscow, which took place on December 4, 1863. The battle was fought near the railroad and wagon bridges that once spanned the Wolf River, and the historic marker explaining the nature of the battle quotes Pvt. Augustus Hurff of the 6th Illinois Cavalry as saying, “The river seemed like running blood instead of water.” It’s been nearly 150 years since the Civil War came to Moscow’s doorstep, and while the community has not forgotten the important events that took place there in the 1860s, it has moved forward by making a name for itself as a place of progress and kindness. The city is home to the J. B. Brunson Industrial Park, the vision of a former mayor, which now plays an important economic role in Fayette County thanks to resident companies such as FRP manufacturer Glasteel and refrigeration component maker Coilmaster. It’s also the location of the Moscow Food Pantry, which grew from a Sunday School class project into a ministry serving approximately 250 families countywide each month and has been recognized for its exceptional service by regional and national organizations.

Oakland Accentuating the Positives
T
he Oakland Economic Development Committee are moving forward with a progressive new promotional campaign to show potential residents and business prospects why Oakland has become the fastest-growing city in Tennessee. The campaign’s “It’s Well Within Your Reach” tagline can be applied to Oakland in a number of different ways — all of them positive. “From a residential standpoint, it says that you can enjoy an extremely affordable small-town living environment here, yet you still have all of the amenities of a large metropolitan area in a short drive time,” explained Jim Gallagher of the Oakland Economic Development Committee. “On the retail and commercial side, it emphasizes the fact that we are right off of I-40 and Highway 385, which will be part of the I-69 corridor from Mexico to Canada. So from the corporate office, retail, commercial and light industrial aspect, heavy transportation is well within your reach. A certified megasite is adjacent to us and the new Intermodal rail line is just south of us, and we’re right in the middle of all of it.” The campaign will soon broadcast these virtues of Oakland and Fayette County via television spots, billboards and print media.

He also indicated that AOC’s commitment to the community played a key role in the decision. “As AOC grew into a global enterprise, Alpha and AOC leadership stayed connected to their founding roots in West Tennessee and have continued to invest and develop here,” Weghorst said. “It was logical that development continue in Fayette County and the new facility be located where the company’s roots and foundation began.”

he global resin and materials technology supplier AOC LLC celebrated the 50th anniversary of its parent company, The Alpha Corporation of Tennessee, with the opening of its new World Headquarters in late 2010. The new Piperton facility also made Fayette County history, being the first in the county to achieve Silver LEED certification. AOC Chairman and CEO Randy Weghorst stated that the company had sustainability in mind from the onset of the project. “Since its inception, AOC has operated on the principle that leadership breeds success. We applied that philosophy during the design stages to create a building that shows leadership in sustainable practices,” he explained. “LEED certification is the natural route to ensuring that sustainability goals are achieved. The company’s new headquarters uses 30 percent less energy and water than similar non-LEED buildings. Achieving higher sustainability standards required a greater initial investment but reduces day-to-day operating costs.” The 50,000-square-foot headquarters features 100 office spaces, a training center, conference rooms and an in-house data center. It’s located across the street from the company’s Tennessee manufacturing facility, the world’s largest manufacturer of unsaturated polyester resins. Their previous headquarters is also located on the campus across the street. It now houses consolidated research and development, product testing, and technical support functions under one roof, improving efficiencies and response times. The new headquarters also gives AOC more room to grow in the future as the company and global economy expand. When asked about the deciding factors for digging their roots deeper in Piperton soil rather than relocating, Weghorst pointed out that the company has solid business reasons for investing close to home. The plant benefits from the region’s logistical strengths as well as technical

Rossville Something Old, Something New

he community of Rossville dates back to the mid-1800s, and as one of Fayette County’s “old towns” it has its share of restored historic structures. But over the past few years the community has also seen its share of new growth as former Memphis residents looked outside of the city for a friendly environment with a lower tax burden and a bit more elbow room. The town’s population increased by nearly 75 percent between the year 2000 and the 2010 census, and the result is a mixed housing market that is unique for a community of Rossville’s size. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, the Rossville Historic District encompasses areas in the northern part of town around Main, Second and Front streets. Many of the homes on these streets were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and they represent a broad spectrum of sizes and architectural styles. Typical of historic housing markets, the selling prices of these homes vary
10
considerably from site to site depending on age, size and condition. Since the year 2000, the southwest part of town has seen tremendous residential expansion, with brand-new homes springing up south of Highway 57 in the areas surrounding Cotton Trail and Cotton Gin drives. These neighborhoods now offer attractive homes that are well suited to growing families and that fall in the $200,000 to $300,000 price range. And within the last five years, the development of upscale neighborhoods, such as Saunders Creek, has expanded local options to include beautiful French country luxury homes on spacious lots and with excellent amenities. With the establishment of its historic district and development of new subdivisions, Rossville has spent the last decade making small-town charm available in several distinct looks, and based on the town’s growth, it appears that the “something old, something new” mix has been a winning combination.

ity leaders in Somerville are taking advantage of grant opportunities to create a more energy-efficient and attractive community. With continuing improvements made around the courthouse square, Somerville is now embarking on Phase II of its streetscape program with enhancements that will add beauty and increased functionality to a two-block stretch of Market Street. The project will include new sidewalks that meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as all-new lighting and attractive green areas. The city was awarded a Tennessee Department of Transportation grant to cover most of the cost of the project. The new streetscape will continue to make the downtown area safer and more attractive to pedestrians and new businesses. City leaders are hopeful for completion of the project by the end of 2012. Somerville is also taking advantage of a Department of Energy grant through the State of Tennessee Economic and Community Development Division to do a series of projects geared toward energy conservation. Business Overview
Business News & Notes: Growth, Super-Size

ayette County is enjoying economic success, especially on the west side, where it capitalizes on the vibrant energy radiating from Memphis. “We are having good growth,” said Julie Perrine, executive director of Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, noting that Memphis denizens are attracted by “lower taxes and better living.” One of the most exciting projects is Norfolk Southern’s new Memphis Regional Intermodal Facility, being built on a 570-acre site in Rossville. The terminal began partial operations in July 2012. The $105 million terminal is a part of the railroad’s multi-state, 2,500-mile and $2.5 billion Crescent Corridor program of projects, set to establish a high-speed intermodal freight rail route linking the Gulf Coast and the Northeast. Intermodal transportation blends the use of rail for long-distance shipping with trucks for local deliveries and pickups. Such a process saves energy and reduces carbon emissions — a typical intermodal train hauls 280 truckloads of freight and moves a ton of freight 480 miles on one gallon of fuel. It also reduces highway congestion and large truck/vehicle accidents. The terminal will have the capacity to handle more than 327,000 containers and trailers each
year. The railroad company boasts that it will utilize the latest in gate and terminal automation technology, which shortens the waiting time for trucks entering the terminal, reducing exhaust emissions and improving truck driver productivity. Perrine is confident that in addition to the immediate construction and employment boost, the facility will help the region’s overall economic base exponentially, adding that it “is going to attract more business.” Fayette County also hopes to benefit from the neighboring Memphis Regional Megasite, a 1,720-acre project in Haywood County aimed at attracting large-scale manufacturing by offering an ideal site with all requisite transportation needs already accommodated. Five of the Tennessee Valley Authority-certified Megasites have attracted manufacturers. Only two remain to be snatched up, including the West Tennessee Megasite. “This project is regional and, depending on the prospect, will have a great effect on Fayette County. The Haywood megasite brings the possibility of being one of the biggest economic drivers for West Tennessee in the next few years,” Fayette County Mayor Rhea Taylor was quoted as saying in The Commercial Appeal.
Those two mammoth undertakings are dwarfed in sheer size by the Piperton Hills Development, located on 3,200 acres of the former Twin Hill Ranch — previously patrolled by cattle — that William and Jackie Adair purchased for $28 million with hopes to carefully shepherd it toward becoming a picturesque subdivision. Dennis Burton, one of the project’s developers, told The Commercial Appeal that the land includes two large lakes, about a dozen ponds and several mature tree canopies. “We’re going to capture all of the beauty of it that we can. We’re not going to go out and cut down trees and drain ponds.... We’re going to build around that kind of stuff.” Burton foresees the future community containing a “classy” shopping center, a grocery store, residential lots ranging from patio homes to 50-acre farms, and perhaps a school. “This is number one to me,” Burton was quoted in The Commercial Appeal. “This is something you dream about. This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. It’s going to be the biggest thing that’s ever hit Fayette County. Nobody else has got that much land in one spot.” Combining significant growth with respect for the region’s beauty and environment, Fayette County’s biggest new developments are great news for the entire region.
Agriculture
Horse Sense Tennessee has a long and storied history with horses, including having its own namesake breed, the graceful Tennessee Walking Horse, famed for its smooth, gliding gait and easygoing temperament. According to the 2007 Census of Agriculture, Tennessee ranks sixth in the U.S. for its number of horses and ponies, and equine industry sales contribute $31.2 million each year to the state’s economy. Fayette County’s rolling hills and pastures are ideal for raising horses, so it’s no surprise it’s home to a number of horse farms that are carrying the Tennessee equine tradition forward.

Futuristic Farming in Fayette County

our generations ago, farmers’ most technologically advanced piece of equipment walked on four hooves. That was a long time ago. Chad Dacus, a fifth-generation farmer on the 2,900-acre Dacus Farms in northwest Fayette County, says that not only are his great-great-grandfather’s mules a thing of the past, but even pieces of farm equipment that were mainstays on farms just 10 years ago have been replaced by newer and better machines. “Our planters now have GPS [systems] that make farming much more efficient,” he said. “Several years ago, farmers used to have spots where they would double plant. Now the GPS planters are turning the machines off when they reach those same spots.” Farmers use planters to first plant a boundary in the same way a homeowner might cut the perimeter of his yard before working his way inward to mow the rest of his lawn. New GPS-guided planters have
monitors that digitally “paint” on the screen areas that have already been planted. They then send a signal to the planter to turn off when it passes over a spot that’s previously been sown, saving precious seeds. “The cost of farming has gone up so much, you don’t even realize how much saving one seed helps — but it makes a big difference,” Dacus noted. According to Dacus, harvesting of the fields has become technologically advanced as well. For one, the new John Deere 7760 Cotton Picker Round Bailer is making the harvesting of cotton more efficient. “It is a non-stop harvest. You can pick the cotton without having to stop and dump,” Dacus noted. “Where we had three or four machines running to harvest the cotton before, we now just have the 7760.” From satellites for seeding to swift harvests, Fayette County farmers sure have come a long way from that stubborn mule.

andridge Equipment’s owner and founder, Cathey Dandridge, sets his business apart from its competition by living the motto, “We doze, but seldom close.” Open since 1967, Dandridge Equipment is the oldest John Deere equipment dealer in the South. The business is open seven days a week, even offering service 24 hours a day. What started as a five-employee business now has a staff of 45 who collectively have over 600 years of service experience with Dandridge Equipment. Coupled with Dandridge Equipment’s commitment to hard work is its devotion to customers. Dandridge says above all else he tries to focus on his customers and their needs. Elected Fayette County’s 2010 Large Business of the Year,

Dandridge Equipment goes the extra mile to ensure customers get the exact products they are looking for. “If a man wants something, and we don’t have it or can’t get it for him, then he probably doesn’t need it,” he notes light-heartedly. No one seems to be complaining of neglect. Mike Cottam, Dandridge Equipment’s general manager, says customer retention is one of Dandridge Equipment’s strengths. The scope of its customer base underscores his point; the company’s customers are not limited to the rural community in which it resides. The dealer provides services to customers as far as 200 miles away and sells products to a customer base that includes 10 states and extends internationally to
countries including Brazil, China, Canada and Argentina, to name a few. According to Cottam, Dandridge Equipment is unique because “we try to treat every customer as a customer instead of a number. A lot of dealers’ customers live in a different town so they treat them as such, but we personalize our service. Mr. Dandridge’s success in life has come from caring about people.” Cottam cites Dandridge Equipment’s John Deere Day as an example of that care. “Originally John Deere Day was tailored for previous customers as a way of treating them to a good time and showing them our newest products,” he explained. “We changed ours to a Saturday venue that is like a community carnival,

geared toward children, including multiple games and activities such as a petting zoo, pedal tractor pull, climbing wall and many more. This year we served over 400 barbeque sandwiches and over 200 hot dogs, free of charge.” The event is a big hit among locals, and even non-customers are welcomed, says Cottam. “I can’t tell you how many people thank us. Even people who never buy anything from us compliment us on this contribution to the good of the people in the Fayette County community.” Dandridge’s macroeconomic success has manifested itself locally as well. Cottam says Dandridge does not like to toot his own horn, but anytime there is a fundraiser or need for community support Dandridge Equipment is one of the first businesses organizers call. In fact, Dandridge Equipment touches so many local Fayette County charities that Cottam was at a loss to relate the entire, lengthy list. But perhaps more than any other charity, Dandridge holds special regard for Fayette Cares, a nonprofit that provides support to those in need, including food, clothing and shelter. As co-chair of the Fayette Cares Annual Gala, Dandridge helped

Large Business of the Year 2011: The Troxel Company

Fayette County Chamber of Commerce
n 1960, Fayette County was one of the poorest counties in the nation. But an Ohio company looking for a new beginning, close to major shipping and abundant labor, saw potential there. The Troxel Company established operations in Moscow, Tenn., and they’ve been a Fayette County mainstay ever since. Production began at the newly constructed Moscow facility in May 1961. In the beginning 40 to 50 locals were hired at 90 cents per hour,
20
many coming from the cotton fields. The plant did very well very quickly, hiring more people, adding equipment and diversifying its product lines. Indeed, flexibility and adaptibility have always been a Troxel strong point. Customers and employees have benefited from an everdiversifying and expanding product line. In the early years millions of bicycle seats were shipped every month. Since then, Troxel’s product line has expanded to include bicycle child carriers, mag bicycle wheels, bicycle racks, lawn furniture, chairs, high chairs, juvenile infant car seats, pedal cars, barbeque grills, tables and chairs, and now Flexible Flyer swing sets. A constant through the years has been and still is welded steel tubing. Employment at Troxel peaked in 1989 at almost 1,000 well-paying jobs. Since its beginning Troxel has demonstrated its commitment to employees, giving thousands the opportunity to provide their families with a comfortable lifestyle. In 2003, an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) was formed. This allowed the employees to purchase the company from the Timms Family. In addition to providing stable and well-paid employment, Troxel gives back to the community by supporting local businesses whenever possible. Charitable work is also part of the company’s legacy. In addition to supporting the
American Cancer Society, Troxel supports Fayette Cares and is a founder of the Fayette County Literacy Program. As the industrial world began experiencing overseas competition, The Troxel Company was also touched. Many jobs were lost to overseas markets, where salaries were and still are at 1961 pay rates. While many companies have not been able to survive, Troxel has actually grown and maintained its profitability. In 2011 the company added 55 new jobs, proving that flexibility and determination do survive and earning Troxel the distinction of being named the Chamber’s Large Business of the Year. What once began with Helen and Richard Timms continues today because of its loyal and dedicated staff, led by a management team headed by President Bobby Rowlett. Troxel has been and remains a strong and viable company — one that plans to be around another 50 years.

resented with the choice between retiring and pursuing a second career, most would choose to jump in to a carefree lifestyle. Not so Sonny and Carrie Nivens, owners of Carahills I and II and winners of Fayette County’s 2010 Outstanding Small Business of the Year award. The Nivenses traded in their nest egg and dream home for an uncertain but grand vision: to build a beautiful country home that would accommodate brides and their families, providing them with a beautiful, affordable and stress-free wedding venue. But where do you build a country home, one that will satisfy choosy brides for whom not just any place will do? You build it in Fayette County, decided Sonny and Carrie. Complete with vibrant vistas, a business-friendly community, affordable tax rate, reasonable land costs and proximity to Memphis, Fayette County was the perfect location for Sonny and Carrie to build Carahills Estate, “the Vision.”

Excellence in Business and Carrie’s adult children’s business savvy and experience, honed by their parents’ tutelage, ensure a seamless transition of ownership when Sonny and Carrie finally do retire. That way, a new generation of brides and their families can enjoy the same, fine attention to detail that Sonny and Carrie have provided their customers for the last 16 years. After earning much praise and distinction from customers and critics alike, Sonny and Carrie still say the most rewarding part of their grand vision is not acclaim or awards but simply passing on their business to their children.

Then, in 2008, during a time when most other businesses were downsizing, Sonny and Carrie expanded. They renamed Carahills Estate Carahills I, and added a second venue, Carahills II, the Manor. Because of the success and popularity of Carahills I, Sonny and Carrie chose Fayette County once again, making it Carahills II’s home as well. The Nivens are happy to report that, combined, Carahills I and II provide approximately 150 amazing weddings and events, yearly, contributing sales tax dollars and other monies to the Fayette County economy instead of Shelby County or other counties near Memphis. he owner of Fayette County’s 2011 Small Business of the Year has a simple approach to growing her business: give each customer the same superior service. Teresa Pentz, the owner of Print Solutions, says this approach makes them unique. “Print Solutions cares about all of its customers,” Pentz said. “We give a $25 business card order the same attention we do a $25,000 project — because $25 to a small business is the same as $25,000 to a big corporation. “We tend to ‘spoil’ our customers,” she added. “Let’s face it: Everyone wants to feel special, and we believe every one of our customers is special.” A seasoned 34-year veteran of the print industry, Pentz decided to venture out on her own in August 1995 so she could stay home with her children, who were small at the time. It was an exciting time for her, one full of joy and promise. “At first, the period when I was juggling being a stay-at-home mom and a businesswoman was the perfect life. My youngest daughter would skate around the house as I worked.” However, demand grew so quickly that she only got to stay home for two years and had to hire employees and add more equipment to keep pace with demand. As demand increased, Print Solutions evolved from a standard digital and offset printer to a print shop with a publishing division that today includes two Shop Local magazines serving Fayette County and the Arlington-Lakeland area. Both Shop Local editions were an outgrowth of Print Solutions’ recognition that their small business customers needed to reach local people. Most of Print Solutions’ customers could not afford to do their own direct mail advertising, so Print Solutions came up with the idea of only featuring local businesses in a locally distributed magazine. Pentz says that this fresh approach made direct mail affordable to almost any small business, and ever since then business has taken off. “The idea caught on so well that we were contacted by a neighboring chamber of commerce in Arlington, Tenn., last year and were asked to start a similar publication for their area. Now we have two magazines.” However, the business picture was not always so rosy; it took sheer determination to persevere during a fragile economy. Many of Pentz’s friends in the industry went out of business or lost their businesses, but Print Solutions stayed ahead and stayed strong, keeping current with the digital age and continuing to offer printing on demand and variable data print options. “We were able to stay afloat during the recession because we didn’t give up!” Pentz said emphatically. “We listen to our customers and their needs and continue to offer affordable, superior products. Also, everyone that works at Print Solutions is unique. And because of them, we stayed afloat.” Her business model for her Shop Local publications has permeated into her philosophy about community.

harlotte Karcher leads such a boring life … at least that’s the way she tells it. But if being vice chairman of two community organizations, an integral part of a church, a graduate of two leadership programs, and coach of Fayette Academy’s cheerleading team since 1989 — just to name a few of her “hats” — is what the 2010 John S. Wilder Citizen of the Year calls boring, then the rest of us must be asleep. Karcher says her mom instilled in her the desire to get involved in others’ lives, and her faith has brought that desire to fruition. “My mother was always helping others in the community when they needed help. She provided for any and every need. I think we, too, are all obligated to serve. Part of our Christian heritage is to be a servant.” C.S. Lewis once said, “Humility is not thinking less of ourselves, just thinking of ourselves less.” This truth is not lost on Karcher. She has embraced the acclaim she has received as a coach and citizen humbly; she values the awards not as a greater opportunity to enjoy the limelight, but as validation that she is making a marked difference in other’s lives. More than anything, she loves helping young people. “I enjoy working with young people because they are our future. They will eventually be the ones taking care of us. If we don’t do a good job, we can’t expect good results, and we won’t have failed just them, but also ourselves.” Karcher, for one, does not plan on falling asleep on the job.
n a culture that prizes self-promotion and personal entitlement, enter Nancy Leggett, a throwback to an earlier time when being serviceminded meant helping others for the greater good, not necessarily for one’s greater gain. Leggett has certainly achieved personal success. As an afterthought, she mentions that she was once the director of radiology at Saint Francis Hospital and enjoys traveling to golf tournaments like the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship. If she chose, she could rest on her laurels, but she does not — far from it. Instead, Leggett, beloved by and loving the Fayette County community, helped start the Moscow Pantry with four other Sunday school members, simply because they saw a need. Starting with one client in February 2005, the pantry now serves almost 250 monthly. When Chamber President Julie Perrine presented Leggett with the 2011 John S. Wilder Citizen of the Year award, she quoted Scripture, because it sums up Leggett best: She feeds the hungry, provides drink for the thirsty, invites strangers into her company, clothes those in need of clothing, and visits those impacted by prison. With all this praise, Leggett simply defers, “The pantry was totally a God thing. It wasn’t something we did. He encouraged us and provided.” Still, He needs people with hands to serve and resources to support the 100 percent donation-dependent pantry, which still serves just a fraction of the 4,900 underserved in Fayette County. Those interested in making a donation can send mail to MCFP, P.O. Box 246, Moscow TN 38057 or contact Nancy Leggett directly at 901-877-3263 or 901-877-3185.

ayette County has an enduring tradition of reaching higher. Somerville has developed a network of ways for residents to improve themselves and their job skills with programs provided locally by a variety of regional institutions. But now the town has developed a plan to strengthen opportunities in higher education by consolidating them in a splendid way: the Fayette County Higher Educational Center. City Administrator Austin H. Edmondson Jr. says the two-level, 26,000-square-foot facility will house a variety of liberal arts, professional and technical programs, serving as a launching point for college degrees and a rung in the ladder to achieve career success. “The intent of the facility is not only to provide the standard college courses that you can use to achieve an associate degree, bachelor’s and ultimately master’s degrees; we’re also gearing the facility to be flexible enough to where area employers can train their employees as well. And it can give them whatever they need to be productive here in Fayette County,” Edmondson said. Schools that can make themselves at home in the center include:
College Campus Comes to Town • The University of Tennessee at Martin, with five locations throughout West Tennessee, boasts the highest graduation rate of any public institution in Middle or West Tennessee. UT Martin offers top-rated agriculture, engineering and nursing programs, and as a member of the University of Tennessee System, is recognized as the only “Best Value” public higher education institution in Middle and West Tennessee by The Princeton Review. • Southwest Tennessee Community College, a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open-access college that offers a broad range of learning opportunities in technical, career, general, transfer, developmental and continuing education. • The University of Memphis, a public university with more than 23,000 students that is the state’s flagship public university. • The Tennessee Technology Center at Whiteville, which offers programs in business systems technology, practical nursing, industrial and computer electronics, HVAC/refrigeration, automotive technology, machine shop/welding, drafting and CAD technology, technology foundations, and adult basic education.
The 7-acre site will offer a bucolic backdrop for a “green” building. “While we are not going to apply for LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] certification, the building will be designed with as much energy conservation
and best practices as we can put forward on it,” Edmondson said. City leaders are clear that the center’s impact will be far-reaching. “The Fayette County Higher Educational Center will bring the needed training and education to enhance our great location. The investment in education will not only bring our workforce to the level that businesses need, but the facility itself will attract and spur investment throughout Fayette County,” stated Fayette County Mayor Rhea “Skip” Taylor, according to Southwest Tennessee Community College’s Southwest Scoop. “The long-term benefits of the new Fayette County Higher Educational Center are to provide this community the option to attend a postsecondary institution without traveling outside the county, provide for future and current economic development, and increase opportunities for a better educated workforce. The educational institutions will work closely to provide corporate training for employees of business and industry that locate within the $40 million State Industrial Mega Site, and other existing business and industry,” said Southwest’s Executive Director of Community and Corporate Relations Russell Shelton, as reported by Scoop. Somerville is pursuing funding to offset costs of the $5 million center. “We will be applying to the EDA [Economic Development Administration] agency for grant funding,” Edmondson said, adding that private fundraisers have also been held.

Dr. McGee accepts most insurances and works with the Tennessee Breast and Cervical Cancer program to make sure that all women who are uninsured or underinsured are treated at no charge to them for suspicion of these cancers. Methodist Fayette is the latest facility in the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare system to implement CPOE/eMAR (Computerized Physician Order Entry/Electronic Medication Administration Record). An electronic medical record (EMR) is a computerized version of a paper medical record and will include all of the information that is important to managing patient care — medical history, allergies, test results, vital
signs and more. CPOE allows physicians to enter orders electronically, decreasing the ambiguity of paper orders, which can be difficult to read. Turnaround time for processing medication, lab and other types of orders also decreases. Methodist Fayette is committed to providing quality care to the community by investing in new technology, hiring top physicians and performing on a high clinical level.
