W
elcome to beautiful Kirksville, Missouri! With a population of over 17,000, the community offers a distinctive small-town atmosphere with many big-city amenities. Its central location makes it a regional hub for service, education, industry and health care. Kirksville is the county seat of Adair County, which was founded in 1841. The county was named in honor of John Adair, then-governor of Kentucky, which was the state of origin for many of the county’s settlers. The town of Kirksville was established that same year. Though the name Kirksville literally means “village of churches,” the city was named in honor of Jessie Kirk, one of the county’s earliest settlers who owned a tavern. Legend has it that surveyors working in the area were invited to share Thanksgiving dinner and good whiskey with Kirk in exchange for them naming the town after him. The deal was made, dinner was enjoyed, and the new town became known as Kirksville. The citizens of Kirksville sought approval for distinct municipal government in 1857, and the official charter to the town of Kirksville was approved January 30, 1857. In recognition of this official act, Kirksville celebrates its sesquicentennial — its 150th anniversary — in 2007. The Civil War Battle of Kirksville took place here on Aug. 6, 1862. A total of 1,250 Union troops under the command of Col. John McNeil met 2,000 Confederate soldiers led by Col. Joseph C. Porter. After a three-hour battle around the courthouse and the northeast portion of the city, the Confederates retreated. Today, a cannon ball retrieved from the courthouse can be found at the Adair County Historical Society, and Memorial Park stands as a tribute to the battle. Kirksville quickly became known as a hub for education in the region. First District Normal School, the forerunner of Truman State University, was founded by Joseph Baldwin in 1867. Today, Truman State is Missouri’s only highly selective statewide public liberal arts and sciences university. In 1892, Andrew Taylor Still founded the American School of Osteopathy in Kirksville. The school, housed in a two-room frame building, had five women and 16 men in its first class. These students, including three of Still’s children and one of

The Kirksville R-III school system provides public school opportunities for nearly 2,500 students. A $7.9 million elementary building was dedicated and opened for service in January 1998, and a new Board of Education building was completed in the summer of 2000. Located at 1405 S. Cottage Grove, Kirksville R-III schools’ Early Childhood Development Center facility serves approximately 70 three-, four- and fiveyear-olds. “This is a reversed mainstream program that serves both special-needs children and children without special needs,” Dr. Joyce Montgomery, assistant superintendant, explains. “We also have one class that is strictly for special-needs children and provides one-on-one instruction.” The Early Childhood program will also house an itinerant teacher who will go out into the community and work with parents and teachers. Speech and language intervention will be provided for some children, as will occupational and physical therapy. Kirksville Primary School (660-665-5691), located at 1815 E. Hamilton, serves students in kindergarten through second grade. Ray Miller Elementary (660-665-2834), located at 2010 E. Normal, is home to students in the third through fifth grades. a unique mission. On June 20, 1995, thenGovernor John Ashcroft signed legislation that designated the university as Missouri’s only statewide public liberal arts and sciences university, expanding its mission from a regional to a statewide institution. Ashley Rufus, a sophomore chemistry major from Chillicothe, IL, was featured in the Aug. 21, 2006, edition of Time magazine in an article entitled “Who Needs Harvard?” Rufus was spotlighted for giving up her coveted spot on Harvard’s waiting list to attend Truman instead. Rufus, who received a full ride to Truman, made her decision to attend Truman to avoid eight years of debt for both undergraduate and graduate studies. She was also pleased with the small student-faculty ratio and the “very impressive” rate of acceptance to medical schools.
Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine Kirksville is home to the historic Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (866-6262878), the founding college of osteopathic medicine. Located at 800 West Jefferson Street, the college is part of A.T. Still University and provides leadership for comprehensive medical education, research and health care around the world. The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine enrolls 750 to 1,000 students every year and provides a $28 million economic impact to the community. The university’s newest project in Kirksville, the Connell Information Technologies Center, a 55,748-square-foot educational facility, opened this spring. The Connell Center offers students advanced computer technology and includes a state-of-the-art human simulation laboratory. The center is named in honor of Ralph M. Connell, DO, and his wife, Eleanor Pet Kilpatrick Connell, long-time supporters of KCOM. The Connell Center also includes a library, a multi-media center, and a student study complex.
Founded in 1892, A.T. Still University was the first college of osteopathic medicine. Since then, 26 additional schools have been added across the nation. A.T. Still, the school’s first president, was the physician who established the osteopathic technique. Osteopathic medicine recognizes the interaction between the mind, body and spirit, and fosters an understanding of how these dimensions can be treated holistically. According to ATSU’s Web site, “osteopathic medicine embraces a holistic philosophy, considering the body as a unit of interrelated systems that work together to ensure good health. In addition to prescribing medication and performing surgery, osteopathic physicians train to use osteopathic manipulative medicine as an additional tool in diagnosing and treating patients. Osteopathic physicians focus on the musculoskeletal system. This interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones makes up about two-thirds of the body’s structure and plays a critical role in its ability to function. DOs are trained to identify structural problems and to facilitate the body’s natural tendency towards health and healing.” ATSU’s colleges and programs represent the spectrum of health care. KCOM and the online School of Health Management (SHM) are located in Kirksville, and the School of Health Sciences and the School of Dental & Oral Health are on ATSU’s Mesa, Arizona, campus. A new college of osteopathic medicine will open in the summer of 2007 in Mesa. From kindergarten to secondary school, to technical training, a community college, a state university and a medical school, Kirksville indeed offers limitless educational opportunities for the community.

TOURISM
Home to Simple Tourism
K
irksville offers abundant opportunities for simple tourism and recreation opportunities. From local and state parks and conservation areas, to a museum, to opportunities with the arts, you can find all you want and more each year. Various campsites, six hotels and motels, and two unique bed and breakfast facilities provide a fun and relaxing stay. Fifteen fastfood establishments, 22 family restaurants, and fine dining facilities provide the cuisine to meet whatever your taste buds desire. Kirksville hosts four distinctive weather seasons, and it offers an abundance of wide-open spaces, beautiful scenery and rolling green hills. A budding tourism program is working to promote the community to visitors. A Tourism and Visitors Advisory Board assists the newly created Tourism and Visitors Manager in developing and implementing a tourism program to attract visitors, conventions, events, sportsmen, motor-coach tours, athletic events and group travelers to Kirksville and the surrounding region. Funds from a newly created lodging tax help promote Kirksville and Adair County as a visitor, tourism, meeting and convention destination, with a primary focus on small market meetings and under-utilized hunting seasons, followed by sporting events and group-travel operators. Kirksville’s neighbors to the south in LaPlata, Mo., are developing a 50-acre Railroad Resort near the Amtrak depot that will be of interest to tourists in the area and specifically train and railroad enthusiasts traveling in northeast Missouri.
Outdoor Recreation Activities The 2,536-acre Thousand Hills State Park offers visitors an outstanding opportunity to explore the best of northern Missouri. The park’s natural highlights recall a time when woodlands and savannas covered northern Missouri. Visitors can experience many natural wonders by hiking the park’s trails. Thousand Hills State Park is home to Forest Lake, a 573-acre lake that was created by the damming of Big Creek. Stocked with crappie, largemouth bass, walleye and channel catfish, the lake is a fisherman’s mecca. Offering a fully stocked marina with boat rentals and supplies, the lake includes a massive 17 miles of shoreline. Fishing, boating and skiing are popular activities; a pay swimming beach is located along the shore; and a nearby beach house provides dressing rooms, showers and a snack bar. Hiking, mountain biking, and nature study are popular activities for land lovers. An interpretive shelter displays the park’s petroglyphs, which are rock carvings left behind by the area’s inhabitants more than 1,500 years ago. Visitors wanting to stay overnight can sleep in one of the cabins near the dining lodge or camp in a modern campground to experience more of what the park has to offer. The waterside location

The campsites also serve 50,000 people and 15,000 camping units each year. Many of the campsites are equipped with electrical hookups, and there are water fountains, dumping stations, modern restrooms and hot showers available in the camping area. Picnic sites are scattered throughout the park and along the lake shore. There are four open shelters, as well as one enclosed shelter with electricity, that can be reserved in advance. Thousand Hills Trail was developed as a cooperative project of the Community Betterment Association of Kirksville, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The five-mile trail covers both the Big Creek Conservation Area and Thousand Hills State Park. Adair County is also a treasure for sportsmen, as the area’s rivers, forests and lakes are prime spots for turkey, deer, pheasant, quail, goose and duck hunting, as well as fishing. Many tourists from as far away as Pennsylvania and New York visit Kirksville each year for the sporting activities that are offered. Smallmouth and largemouth bass, bluegill, perch, and catfish are among the daily catches, and the community is home to literally thousands of acres of private and public hunting grounds. At Big Creek Conservation Area, shotgun, longbow and muzzleloading firearms hunting are all allowed in season. On the area’s 1,066 acres, deer, turkey, squirrels and upland game are available for hunting; bass and bluegill have been stocked in area ponds. Camping is allowed on site. The Sugar Creek Conservation Area offers ponds and streams for hours of enjoyable and relaxing fishing. Boasting 2,536 acres, the area is primarily forested and is bisected by Sugar and Elm creeks. White-tailed deer and wild turkey are abundant in the area. Camping is permitted. Twelve acres of river access are available at Mullanix Ford. The area consists mainly of old fields and forestlands. A concrete boat ramp provides easy access to the Chariton River, which has populations of crappie, sunfish and catfish.

TOURISM Montgomery Woods Conservation Area offers 348 wooded acres and provides abundant populations of white-tailed deer and wild turkey, along with limited fishing. Likewise, the Shoemaker Conservation Area’s 200 acres are characterized by oak-hickory wooded hills with narrow ridges. This area supports populations of deer, turkey and squirrels, and Spring Creek cuts through the northern portion of the area. Finally, the 7,981-acre Union Ridge Conservation Area spans parts of Adair, Putnam and Sullivan counties. Consisting of grasslands, old fields, prairie savanna and forest, the area is also bisected by Spring Creek. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail and other upland game species can be hunted. In addition, the 11-acre Union Ridge Lake is stocked with bass, bluegill, black crappie and channel catfish. Camping is permitted in the Montgomery Woods, Shoemaker and Union Ridge areas. Kirksville is also home to nine outstanding public park facilities. Brashear Park, located on Cottage Grove Street, is minutes from both the Kirksville R-III campus and Truman State University. The park has a covered picnic shelter with electrical outlets and grills, restrooms, a basketball court, a playground structure, swing sets, a merry-go-round, and a 60-by-30-foot wading pool. Jaycee Park, located on North Osteopathy Street, has similar facilities with the addition of a regulation softball field, which is available for public use. Memorial Park on Cottonwood Street is just minutes from the downtown business district. This park, which has been dedicated to veterans of foreign wars, has similar facilities to Brashear Park. The 30-acre North Park Complex, located on U.S. Highway 63, offers two lighted 300-foot softball fields, a lighted regulation baseball field, two 300-foot softball fields, and a 270-foot softball field. The complex boasts a concession stand, covered picnic shelter, a playground structure, and a paved parking lot that accommodates 350 vehicles. All fields have eight-foot sidewalks leading from the parking lot. Recent additions include two new batting cages, a new Pee Wee field and a new practice infield. Patryla Park is located on Decker Road just west of Osteopathy Street. Facilities include a covered picnic shelter with electrical outlets, restrooms, two newly resurfaced tennis courts, and a regulation lighted softball field. A portion of this park is wooded and borders a large pond with a variety of fish. P.C. Mills Park on Hamilton Street offers a covered picnic shelter, restrooms and wading pool, a softball backstop, playground structure, swing sets, merry-go-round, a barbecue grill, and a large slide. The Roadside Park on South Franklin Street offers a picnic area. Once called Swimming Pool Park, Rotary Park on U.S. Highway 63 has three covered picnic shelters with electrical outlets, restrooms, a snow-sledding area, a playground structure, and swing sets. This park is also home to the Kirksville Family Aquatic Center and the newly constructed Rotary Centennial Amphitheater. The Kirksville Family Aquatic Center (660-627-POOL) is open year round, boasts an indoor and outdoor facility, and provides swimming lessons and various water-aerobics classes.
Cultural Activities and Events Outdoor sports do not provide the only enrichment opportunities in Kirksville. A myriad of activities are designed to broaden community appreciation for the arts as well. One example is Truman State University’s Kohlenberg Lyceum Series. Since the series began in 1899 as a lecture course, its aim has been to broaden the cultural experience of students, faculty, staff, and the community through speakers, music, and drama. Each year, the series brings to the Truman campus www.kirksvillechamber.com 7

Each Fourth of July, the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the AllAmerican Red, White and Blue Festival (660665-3766), which offers everything from fireworks to a parade and festival. The Northeast Missouri (NEMO) Fair (660-665-8800) offers something for everyone, as it pulls in an estimated 10,000 visitors daily for the week-long event each July. From 4-H and FFA exhibits, to commercial and open exhibits, to opportunities to watch area youth show their prize animals, the NEMO Fair is a fun time for people of all ages. It also features nationally recognized musical acts, an exceptional carnival and lots of great food vendors. Camping facilities are also available for this event. The Kirksville Arts Association (660665-0500) provides enrichment opportunities for residents. The Kirksville Arts Association promotes a vigorous economic and cultural arena in which to foster the arts for northeast Missouri’s rural communities. The organization recently purchased the former Baldwin Bizmart building on the corner of Franklin and McPherson, which will house the arts association, studios, an exhibit area and theater. In partnership with the Curtain Call Theatre Company and the Community Chorus, they are embarking on a new direction for art, music, theater, dance and cultural events in Kirksville and are in the midst of a $1.2 million campaign to renovate all three floors of the facility. The Curtain Call Theatre Company was founded in 1997 as an encore to Travellers Community Theatre. Each year, the company performs a full season of high-quality theatrical performances for Kirksville and the surrounding communities. The total audience involvement has grown from an average of 200 to more than 1,000 patrons per season. Past seasons have included such shows as “Harvey,” “Into the Woods,” “Grease,” “Arsenic and Old Lace,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Steel Magnolias,” “The Odd Couple” and “The Foreigner.” The company’s practice and performance facilities are housed within the arts center building. The mission of the Curtain Call Theatre Company is to provide quality and affordable live theatrical entertainment to Kirksville and the communities of northeast Missouri by utilizing the resources of aspiring amateur adult, student and child actors of the area and by striving
toward establishing a permanent facility for theatrical and cultural arts in the region. The Kirksville Community Chorus began in 1998 and offers choral opportunities for adults of all ages. The group performs two regular concerts each year in the spring and at Christmas. In addition, the Men of Note Quartet and the Grace Notes ladies ensemble are offshoots of the Kirksville Community Chorus. Each summer, the Kirksville Arts Association presents the Summer on the Square Concert Series. Offered each Friday night in June, July and August, the concert series features a variety of free entertainment for the entire family. Each October, the Kirksville Arts Association also sponsors the Red Barn Arts and Crafts Festival, which brings the community together with individuals who are involved in visual arts, performing arts and crafts. The first Red Barn Festival was held in 1973, and every year since has offered an opportunity for family entertainment and arts education, which cultivates an appreciation for the arts while offering professional opportunities for the participating artists. Over the years, the festival has grown into a major regional arts and crafts festival and an important and much-anticipated annual event. Musical and dance routines take place throughout the day on the historic Kirksville square, and a local service club sponsors special children’s activities. The Red Barn Arts and Crafts Festival features more than 100 art booths and is visited by more than 9,000 people each year. Each booth is judged by professionals in the art community on originality, uniqueness, and quality of work. Prizes are awarded to winning competitors. Architectural tours, gallery exhibitions, student art exhibits, special events, and an After-School Invitation to the Arts Program round out the array of activities that are sponsored by the Kirksville Arts Association annually. Twice a year, the Wooden Nickel Restaurant presents the Round Barn Blues Festival (660-665-2760). The first Saturday in May and the last Saturday in September find the barn filled with dedicated blues fans. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1913-era round barn was originally built for hay storage and livestock shelter; today, it features nationally known entertainers and local groups.

The museum collection includes photographs, documents and books that trace the history of the osteopathic profession throughout the United States and the world. The museum preserves these resources for present and future visitors and researchers and educates visitors about the unique legacy of Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO, and the osteopathic profession. Dr. Still lived and practiced in the community of Kirksville for more than 40 years, and in 1892 he founded the first school of osteopathic medicine, which is known today as the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Highlights of the museum campus include two historic buildings preserved in a two-story atrium next to the museum: the birthplace log cabin of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828–1917) and the original two-room classroom building of the American School of Osteopathy. The collections of the Still National Osteopathic Museum offer more than 25,000 objects, photographs, documents and books dating from the early 1800s to the present day. The Still National Osteopathic Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday; and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Veterans Memorial Plaza is located along North Baltimore Street. In 2000, the city of Kirksville donated a portion of Swimming Pool Park/Rotary Park to the Adair County Veterans Commission for the construction of a Veterans Memorial wall to memorialize veterans of the region from all conflicts. Granite tablets with the names of veterans were erected, forming a semicircle around an obelisk. The plaza also features a World War I German Howitzer and a Civil War-era cannon. These offerings and more make Kirksville not only a great place to live, but also a great place to visit. An Abundance of Shopping and Service Opportunities

National retailers are looking at the community, and several have made decisions to locate in Kirksville. Kirksville serves the region of northeastern Missouri as an educational, medical, agricultural and manufacturing center, offering the only large discount stores in the surrounding nine counties. The city’s main road and business area is Baltimore Street, or U.S. Highway 63. Highway 63 is booming with an abundance of retailers and restaurants. Home Depot and Walgreen’s Drug Store are among the businesses that have located to the Baltimore Strip area. A drive-through coffee shop and an antique mall are new businesses in the area. The Baltimore Strip encompasses the main traffic through town, and the north end is exploding with new businesses. Many shopping opportunities are located along the strip from north to south, and the friendly retailers truly enjoy serving their customers. You can find everything from Wal-Mart, to pharmacies, to fast-food outlets. Whether you have a taste for ethnic cuisine or a good Midwestern burger, the Kirksville area has something to please everyone. Among the offerings are the Downtown Cinema 8, which shows the latest Hollywood hits.
The downtown district markets to unique shopping opportunities and “mom and pop” businesses. At the center of Old Town is the 100-yearold Adair County Courthouse square, which, in the 1800s, was a main shopping, business and gathering place for the region. Old Town features a wide Kirksville continues to recruit national retailers while strongly supporting small-business owners in town.
variety of businesses, organizations and residences offering one-of-a-kind goods and services in the ambiance of colorful old architecture. In the 1800s, downtown Kirksville is where people from the region did their shopping, conducted their business, and gathered to see their friends and neighbors. Today, the faces, shops, restaurants and businesses are new, but Old Town remains a hub of bustling activity. The historic yet contemporary mix of Old Town is supported by the Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee, Inc. (KDICI). The KDICI is a nonprofit membership organization whose mission is to strengthen the center of the Kirksville community by creating a positive image, fostering economic development, and revitalizing and preserving downtown Kirksville, while promoting the area as an exciting place to shop, dine, live, work, invest, be entertained and own a business. Kirksville continues to recruit national retailers while strongly supporting small-business owners in town. Several national chains, including Walgreen’s, Ruby Tuesday, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Ponderosa, the Country Kitchen and various fast-food chains have found Kirksville to be an important hub of retail and consumer activity. These national chains are joined by thriving local business, a prime example of which is the Kiwanis Farmers Market. The downtown square hosts this successful farmers market at 7 a.m. each Saturday from May through October. Local vendors sell everything from fresh produce to homemade baked items, all made and grown locally. Kirksville prides itself on being a warm, welcoming community that offers big-city amenities while maintaining a small-town feel.

TRANSPORTATION
A Leader in Innovative Transportation Solutions
K
irksville has consistently proven itself as a leader in innovative transportation solutions. A group of concerned citizens has led the way in addressing serious safety concerns and widening U.S. Highway 63, while at the same time serving as a national model for innovative funding of transportation issues. For decades, residents wanted a 22-mile, two-lane stretch of Highway 63 between Macon and Kirksville expanded to four lanes to improve safety and stimulate economic development. In 1992, the Highway 63 project, as well as several others across the state, became part of a statewide improvement plan. In 1998, however, funding constraints caused many of the projects in the improvement plan, including Highway 63, to be deferred until 2020 or later. Kirksville residents and business leaders decided to take action by meeting with leaders from Missouri Department of Transportation (MODoT) and Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission (MHTC). Even though the Highway 63 project had been stalled, MHTD was receptive to moving the project forward if supplemental funding from local sources could be found. The Highway 63 Transportation Corporation is a group that was originally formed in 1998 as a subcommittee of the Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee. The committee decided to pursue the widening of Highway 63 by exploring new ways to finance the road, including an innovative economic development sales tax. This resulted in a three-way partnership between the City of Kirksville, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the newly formed Highway 63 Transportation Corporation. A nonpartisan bill presented in the state legislature soon allowed communities to impose an economic development sales tax.

The Highway 63 project has helped improve the broader sense of community in Kirksville, and people across the state and nation are now using Highway 63 as a creative model on how to effectively deal with needed improvements when state and federal fundThe Kirksville Regional Airport ing is insufficient. Kirksville also offers pubhas been an important part lic transportation services for of Kirksville and Adair County the community. Beginning in since the early 1930s. the summer of 2006, KirkTran (660-665-8404) began offering a fixed-route service, which operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. A fixed downtown loop repeats each hour and offers 19 stops that include the Adair County Health Department, various apartment complexes, Hy-Vee Food and Drug, the Kirksville Aquatic Center, Wal-Mart, Aldi’s, the Kirksville Regional Medical Center, and Truman State University. Kirk-Tran costs $2 each time a passenger boards the vehicle; a $15 coupon book — good for 10 stops on the fixed route only — is available for purchase from the fixed-route driver, St. Andrew’s Apartments and Kirksville City Hall. Kirksville residents also have access to Amtrak (800-USA-RAIL) service, which runs out of nearby LaPlata, Missouri. In addition, the Kirksville Regional Airport (660-665-5020) has been an important part of Kirksville and Adair County since the early 1930s when it was first established as a backup military airport. Funding for the airport’s operations comes through federal grants and fuel sales. In November 2006, the Kirksville Regional Airport began offering a new air service from Kirksville to Kansas City. Two round-trip flights are offered daily via U.S. Air (660-627-0100). The airport is a strong benefit to the community because no major hubs are located within 100 miles of Kirksville. Area businesses benefit from being able to transport important clients in and out of the city of Kirksville, and students, faculty and staff at Truman State University and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine have a safe and quick alternative to driving to and from their hometowns. When all is said and done, in Kirksville, you can certainly “get there from here.” The community is all about offering innovative solutions to meet all of its transportation challenges.

Its citizens are very supportive of law enforcement and are willing to do whatever they can to make the community a safer place to live. Kirksville is an active community, and residents are always willing to implement new programs and initiatives to make this city the place they want it to be. Kirksville offers churches of numerous denominations, a Senior Living Campus and activities galore for everyone. Communication thrives in the city, which boasts its own television station, a variety of radio stations and a media resource center. Kirksville and Adair County are the places to find a wide array of affordable housing. A three-bedroom home can be found for less than $80,000, and a two-bedroom apartment will average $400 to $500 per month. Condominiums are available for around $50,000. Homes can be found in both historic neighborhoods and new developments. Educational opportunities abound with public education offered by the Kirksville R-III, Adair R-I and Adair R-II districts. Individuals wishing to pursue higher education opportunities can do so at Moberly Area Community College or Truman State University. Looking for a safe and friendly place to retire? You can find it in Adair County. Kirk-Tran’s fixed-route public transportation system operates five days a week from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., making 19 scheduled stops each hour in the city. The Missouri Department of Transportation has granted Kirksville funding to make Franklin Street, which runs through the center of town, more pedestrian friendly by adding sidewalks and improving lighting. In addition, plans are under way to improve streets and sidewalks on Jefferson
Street near the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Providing a high level of health care, the Northeast Regional Medical Center is an impressive level-three trauma center with a 109-bed facility supporting 36 medical specialties. Offering a rich medical heritage, Northeast Regional Medical Center serves as northeast Missouri’s referral center and offers a cancer treatment center, cardiac and stroke services, diagnostic services, emergency care and trauma, home health, rehabilitation, pediatrics, and surgical services. Since 2000, the hospital has invested more than $11 million in improvements and expansions on their local facility. These include a new emergency room, lab, admissions area and Critical Care Unit. The community is home to 95 medical specialists, 36 family practitioners and five pharmacies. The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine is leading the way in developing philosophies for healthy aging in the community. Osteopathic medicine embraces a holistic philosophy, considering the body as a unit of interrelated systems that work together to ensure good health. The Kirksville campus — alongside its umbrella institution, A.T. Still University — is dedicated to developing research and action plans to promote healthy aging in the country’s rural communities. An active RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) gives seniors the opportunity to get involved in the local community. RSVP is a national program to help retired seniors, age 55 years and older, find interesting volunteer opportunities at nonprofit organizations in their community. The Kirksville-based RSVP serves all of Adair and the surrounding counties, with more than 600 enrolled members who contribute more than 100,000 volunteer hours at more than 60 work sites every year. In addition, 13 United Way agencies offer volunteer opportunities, as do the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Adair County Historical Society and Museum, and the Still National Osteopathic Museum. The Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce plays a critical role in promoting the business and institutional communities in the Kirksville area. The chamber is the first stop for new residents, new students, tourists, prospective business and industry. Its goals include recruiting new businesses; working with local, regional and state governments to build a better business climate; and coordinating business-enhancing activities and promotions for existing businesses all over town.

CLOSING The chamber has over 360 members and is growing every day. Its mission is to assume a leadership role in advancing the overall business, cultural and civic welfare of the Kirksville area. This mission is accomplished not only through monetary member support, but also through thousands of hours of volunteer time from its membership. Kirksville offers small businesses the opportunity to grow through its incubator programs. Entrepreneurs can build their businesses without overhead, headaches or growing pains. The residents of Kirksville are proud of their strong work ethic and provide a reliable labor force. A Kirksville-based Missouri Rural Enterprise and Innovation Center was recently established. The center, made possible through a $175,000 state appropriation, is a cooperative venture among the City of Kirksville, the Adair County Commission, A.T. Still University, Truman State University, Northeast Regional Medical Center, Kirksville Regional Economic Development, and the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce. As it supports new technology-based business initiatives, the Missouri Rural Innovation Center will serve as a creative economic development agency focused on the needs of rural communities and rural business enterprises across the state of Missouri, with particular emphasis on the northern half of the state. The center will foster business development in the areas of life sciences, advanced manufacturing technology and information technology, and it will encourage economic interests that reflect the needs and opportunities of rural Missouri. These include healthy aging, clinical drug trials, value-added agriculture, and other information-intensive productdevelopment opportunities that may emerge from the partners or potential clients. Citizens of Kirksville enjoy a simpler, slower pace. A plethora of city parks are available throughout the community, and the area offers many outdoor opportunities, including hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, swimming and picnicking. The community affords quiet neighborhoods and new and contemporary districts. Many adventures are only a day trip away, including visits to Amish country and city shopping opportunities. Plenty of wholesome youth activities are available including Scouts, church youth groups, 4-H, Young Achievers, KLIFE and YMCA sports programs. Kirksville hosts four distinctive weather seasons, and it is blessed with an abundance of wide-open spaces and beautiful scenery. Kirksville certainly offers big-city amenities with a small-town feel. A variety of retail shopping opportunities are available, from national retailers to quaint businesses located in the downtown area. Visit the Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning, and don’t forget to visit one of the many antique shops around town. There is a wide array of cultural activities available through the state university, local arts association and community theater. From gourmet cooking clubs to motorcycle clubs, to community choirs and local bands, you can find it all right here in Adair County. Kirksville is also a friendly environment for senior citizens, offering many amenities, outstanding housing, and a health care system that is the best in the region. The articles within this guide represent merely a cross section of what the city of Kirksville and Adair County are all about. We hope you will agree that this small town with a big-city feel offers the perfect fit for living, working, raising a family or retiring. The community’s people, businesses, educational institutions, tourism and recreation opportunities attest to the unique nature of the region that provides something for everyone.
