Bringing the Community Closer Together

S

ome of the earliest settlers of the North County area believed that religion and faith were a very important part of any community. They spent considerable time and resources to build places to worship. Some of these, such as Old St. Ferdinand Shrine, still stand today and have become significant historic sites that remind us of the importance worship played in the development of our neighborhoods. Today, local residents still feel that religion is an important part of their lives and that it brings a community closer together. The area boasts more than 500 places of worship. There are many different denominations found throughout the area, and there is a congregation waiting to accept you into their fold with open arms. Take some time and visit a few of the congregations until you find one that feels just like home. Each church has its own unique personality, and there is sure to be one that matches you and your family’s needs. There are activities throughout the week to get you more involved; from social ministry programs to community service projects, there is always something to get involved in if you are interested.

Prime Location, Quality Workforce, Strong Infrastructure

“T

he popularity of North St. Louis County continues to grow, with recently completed, near-term and planned commercial investment of $2.1 billion; more than $1 billion in annual household consumer spending; $184 million in transportation improvements; and 3,200-plus new homes planned.” — Dr. Mark Tranel Director of Public Policy Research Center at UM-St. Louis.

North County is located within the St. Louis region, which is the 18th-largest metropolitan area in the nation. Of the 2.7 million persons in the metro area, nearly half a million reside in North County. The entire region offers a well-trained workforce of 1.4 million, which employers find very attractive. Of that workforce total, 207,400 reside in North County. With St. Louis County offering the largest resident labor force in the region, the economy continues to thrive, with low unemployment rates relative to the national rate. While North County has seen a decline in manufacturing in the past few years, the area has seen an increase in service and retail industries. Prime location, quality workforce, strong infrastructure and available commercial sites — these factors are the keys to future business success and employment opportunities in North County. With a thriving economy, helpful local officials, and an educated and available workforce, businesses continue to grow and flourish here. More companies are relocating and expanding into the area each year.

Location What is it about North St. Louis County that makes it the perfect location for businesses of every type and size? We are part of the most economically important county in the State of Missouri. We are located near both the population and geographical centers of the United States. Within the St. Louis metropolitan area, North County is located just minutes from St. Louis City’s central core, St. Charles County and Metro East Illinois. One of the advantages of working in North County is the ease of commuting throughout the area. Access within the metro area is fast and easy, allowing employers to tap into an extensive, well-trained workforce. While people in similar cities spend as much as 136 hours a year in rush-hour traffic, residents of North County spend, on average, less than an hour a week. Large corporations, national chains, small locally owned companies and service providers find North County a great place to do

business, because of its close proximity to air, rail and river travel, along with the impressive interstate highway system running throughout the area. Getting goods and services in and out of the area is both convenient and cost-effective. North County companies, large and small, provide jobs in a variety of fields and offer competitive salaries and benefit packages. Employees also enjoy the benefits of living near a large city, without the inconveniences and the higher cost of living found in other areas of similar size. The St. Louis Metro area offers the third-lowest cost of living among the nation’s top 20 metropolitan areas. Housing costs are considerably less than in other major cities, such as Chicago, Phoenix, Dallas and Los Angeles.

n a local, national and international scale, the North St. Louis County area offers many advantages when it comes to transportation, whether you live, own a business or work here.” — Rebecca Zoll Executive Director, North County Incorporated, Regional Development Association

The St. Louis region is one of the best locations in the United States in terms of offering the four major modes of transportation: air, rail, roads and water. The area’s major airport, Lambert-St. Louis International, has 83 gates and serves 15 commuter airlines. Air service at Lambert has grown steadily over the past two years, averaging nearly 760 arrivals and departures daily with over 380 daily flights to 84 non-stop destinations. Passenger and air cargo service is available to most major U.S. cities through more than 20 airlines. North County’s strategic location at the north/south and east/west nexus of the Interstate Highway System makes the region very attractive for shipping purposes and navigational ease. Railroads are a very common method of transporting goods to and from the area. St. Louis is located near the geographic and population center of the United States, and it is the third-largest rail center. The region is served by more than 10 railways, with the main yards in downtown St. Louis. North County has existing and available rail services that run to spurs throughout the area. Amtrak passenger trains also serve the region. For over two centuries, people have been using the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to transport goods throughout North America. Sitting directly at the

confluence of these two great rivers, North St. Louis County is in the perfect position to access this natural highway. Local facilities for barge transportation are located at the Port of Metropolitan St. Louis. The Port is served by all major barge lines and is the northernmost year-round ice-free port on the inland waterway. Six different port authorities administer the Metropolitan Port of St. Louis, which extends 70 miles along the banks of the Mississippi. Both the U.S. interstate and the Missouri highway systems that serve the North St. Louis County area allow for much more convenient, rapid access than is normally found in metro areas similar in size. Although there are business and retail hubs throughout North County, you will not experience the traffic gridlock found in other metropolitan areas. Interstates 70, 170, 270 and 370, along with Highways 67 and 367, make the area extremely accessible for both people and products. Access to Interstates 44, 64 and 55 is available within 10–25 miles from the North County area. Businesses find it easy to get the supplies they need and ship their end products to consumers throughout the country from this region. The availability of so many transportation options provides the community with some of the lowest shipping costs in the country. An effective mass transportation grid that features MetroLink, the community’s light rail system, also serves the area. Seven MetroLink stations are located in North County and provide transit to many of the entertainment and major attraction venues in St. Louis, as well as to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, the downtown area, and several outlying suburbs in both Illinois and Missouri. From many of the MetroLink stations you can hop on the Bi-State Bus System and continue to your home or office. MetroLink is currently undergoing a massive $625 million expansion. Area leaders realize the importance of having a wellmaintained transportation infrastructure and, with the current growth of the area, this infrastructure is more important than ever. Because local leaders continually work to secure funding to maintain the existing roads, nearly $200 million will be spent in this part of St. Louis County on highway and road improvements over the next three years. Businesses, residents and travelers enjoy wellkept roads and highways. Highway 367 north of Interstate 270 is one example: With $70 million in improvements, this major transportation corridor will have better traffic flow, be safer, and provide better access than ever to businesses. This major infrastructure improvement now provides North County with another prime corridor for economic development. The $1.2 billion runway expansion at LambertSt. Louis International Airport is another major investment

that will positively affect the region’s transportation network. The installation of a third major runway, which will improve capacity — particularly during inclement weather — is a big part of this investment. Once completed, business and recreational travelers will experience fewer delays, making traveling in and out of the area that much more convenient. Getting around the area, whether by rail, road, air or water, is easy and convenient and is just one of the reasons so many people and businesses are saying North County is the place to be!

History buffs, antique lovers and those who are curious about the past come here to learn more about the sites and stories of bygone days. These are some that need to be at the top of everyone’s list. Old St. Ferdinand Shrine, constructed in 1821, is a reminder of the area’s Spanish influence. Located in Florissant, this is the oldest standing church in all of the Louisiana Purchase territory and is believed to be the oldest Catholic church between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. It is part of a complex of historically and architecturally significant buildings, including a convent built in 1819, that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many artifacts, paintings and other treasures are housed here. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, who lived in the convent in the 1800s, established Florissant’s first school. Admission is free, and tours are available year-round. This ordination site of Father DeSmet is located in Old Town Florissant and is open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Fort Belle Fontaine Park, site of the first American fort west of the Mississippi and the last campsite of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition, was established in 1805. Open from 8 a.m. until sunset, the park features a three-mile hiking and biking loop trail that winds through a newly restored upland prairie and near historic sites along the Missouri River. Since 2002, in late September, the Fort has hosted a re-enactment of the last Lewis and Clark landing at this site. The Living History Re-enactors, with their black powder guns and period clothing, make history come alive for visitors. Future plans include restoration of the 1930s staircase that goes from the bluff down to the riverfront. Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine is the volunteer historic preservation group working on the preservation of this significant site. General Daniel Bissell House is a historic home once owned by the commandant of Fort Belle Fontaine. Bissell was a prominent farmer and community leader until his death in 1833. Taille de Noyer, one of the oldest homes in St. Louis County, was enlarged from a two-room cabin built in 1790 to a three-floor home for the family’s 17 children by 1850. Currently located on the campus of McCluer High School, it is operated by the Florissant Valley Historical Society. This is often the site of special luncheons and other events and is one of the stops on the historical house tour each May. Florissant’s Historic Green Line Walking Tour provides many glimpses into the area’s past. A tour map and guide are available on the Florissant Old Town web site. Old Ferguson Walking Tour – East and West is a trip back in time for visitors to the heart of this city. Within the city’s original boundaries (as they were in 1894) are three buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, several designated Ferguson Landmarks, more than 70 Century Homes, and two St. Louis County Landmarks. Each tour covers approximately 1.5 miles. This is a cooperative venture of the Ferguson Landmarks Commission and the Ferguson Historical Society. Wild Wood Plantation Home was built in 1856 and is listed on the National Registry for Historic Homes. Take a step back in time and tour this beautiful home, once owned by Maj. Joseph H. LaMott. group has taken on the job of preserving the timeless treasures found in Overland. At the Log House, you will find traditional making of apple butter in the fall; a candlelight tour, complete with historical re-enactors and period holiday decorations, in December; and tours and a barbecue two or three times a year. The Wilson Larimore House Plantation was once called the “Model Farm of Missouri” by the Missouri Agricultural Society and covered 2,000 acres. The house, pre-Civil War and Italianate in style, was completed in 1858 and features 14 fireplaces, 12-foot ceilings and mahogany woodwork throughout. Restored in 1989, today it is a bed and breakfast as well as a popular wedding site. The beautiful house and grounds are also available for special occasions, such as receptions, banquets, luncheons and holiday parties. This local treasure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and was named as a Landmark and Preservation Area by St. Louis County in 1996. Brookes Park in Hazelwood is the site of three pieces of area history. The Little Red Schoolhouse, first known as Elm Grove School, was built in 1852. In 1961, it was dedicated as a museum. In 1970, it was added to the roster of National Historic Landmarks. Knobbe House and Utz-Tesson House are currently undergoing restoration projects. The Utz-Tesson House was built in 1782 and is older than most of the log cabins that were built in the area. Today it is known as one of the most interesting and valuable historic houses in St. Louis County. Plans are to make it a cultural and educational site with exhibits inside the house. Knobbe

With a separate memorial and flag for each branch, including the Merchant Marines, this striking display will draw many visitors in the years to come. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Space enthusiasts of all ages are making the Challenger Learning Center–St. Louis both an entertainment and educational highlight in North County. Located in Ferguson, this award-winning attraction features a unique, hands-on space simulation experience in a realistic space station and mission control. In a two-hour program, visitors can be transported to the year 2076 and become team members working together as an astronaut crew. All missions require advance reservations and a brief training session. Community and corporate groups, school

children, residents, and visitors appreciate and enjoy what the center has to offer. Telling the story of more than eight decades of aviation progress, The James S. McDonnell Prologue Room is a required stop for avid aviators and history buffs alike. Located on the lobby level of Building 100 at Boeing, next to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, this comprehensive exhibit is open to the public June through August at no charge. During the school year, September through May, there are guided tours for groups of 10 or more (reservations required). “The Mystery of Flight” is an educational program presented for fourth grade and older students during the school year. From biplanes to space travel, the history of flight is always fascinating. The exhibit includes scale models, dioramas, paintings and photos. It documents important aviation events, such as the first flight around the world in 1924 and the first manned spacecraft to orbit Earth in 1962. On display are a scale model of the Apache helicopter, one-quarter scale models of Air Force One and Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner, full-size engineering mockups of the Mercury and Gemini spacecraft, and scale models of the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. FESTIVALS

North County’s municipalities love to celebrate their heritage, history, culture and traditions in various ways. And what better way than with a festival, parade or community celebration? Local listings give dates, times and

places. Here are few of the more well-known events that residents and visitors can enjoy. Florissant invites you to the Valley of Flowers Festival the first full weekend in May. Known as the First Festival of Spring, this is an annual event that began in 1963. Highlights of the three-day weekend festival include the crowning of the Valley of Flowers Queen and the themed Grand Parade and Tot Wheels Parade. There are also carnival rides and live music, a car show and a dog show, a flea market and craft fair, and even a plant sale. Children look forward to the petting zoo, soap box derby and carnival games. And you won’t want to miss the Old Town Fall Festival on the second weekend of October or the Christmas Concert on the first and second Sundays in December. Whenever you come to Florissant, be ready to experience early Federal, Greek Revival, Missouri French and Missouri German architecture, as well as the beautiful handiwork of the earliest settlers of the region. For a special treat, make a reservation and be part of high tea at the Fleur de Lis Tea Room. Hazelwood Harvestfest is an annual event held in September. The Parks & Recreation Department plans the entire event, and everything is free, except the concessions. The crowning of Miss Hazelwood and the parade begin the festivities. Live entertainment with different musical styles and special events, like the BMX bike show, draw large crowds. There are also games and activities for the children, lots of family entertainment, and vendor booths hosted by crafters and local businesses. Summer in St. Ann brings free family activities for all ages. Movies in the Park at

Maryland Heights. Regardless of the day or the course you choose, you’ll appreciate the combination of excellent facilities, appealing weather and fine friendship. The area is also home to the St. Louis Unions, an exciting new baseball club. Part of a revival of vintage baseball sweeping the nation, the Unions play the game as it was played in 1860. Not only do players follow the rules of the 1860s, they also wear the uniforms and use language and customs from that period. Playing at the Knights of Columbus Grounds in Florissant on select dates from April through October, the Unions love the sport and its history — and help others to do the same. Cardinals Care baseball fields and leagues are popular in North County. A community effort of the St. Louis Cardinals, funding is provided for services, field maintenance, base stops, perimeter fencing, a scoreboard, uniforms and all baseball equipment for leagues from tee ball through age 14. Locally owned retail stores and ethnic restaurants that have been around for generations, as well as nationally known favorites, are enjoying unprecedented success here. As one of the largest shopping areas in the St. Louis area, North County is home to three regional malls: Jamestown Mall, Northwest Plaza and St. Louis Mills. Located right off Route 367 and Highway 67 you will find Jamestown Mall. Macy’s, Sears and the JCPenney Outlet are the anchor stores. With its many specialty stores, this mall continues to be a convenient destination. Ten restaurants and eateries give shoppers and moviegoers a variety of dining choices. Krieger’s Restaurant, with its all-American menu, is a great place to grab a bite before heading to the mall’s 14-screen cinema, which plays the latest movies. Located in the City of St. Ann on St. Charles Rock Road, right off Highway 67, you’ll find Northwest Plaza. A complete renovation is scheduled over the next two years to better meet customer needs. It currently is anchored by Macy’s and Sears and offers the popular Steve and Barry’s University Sportswear Store, as well as a theater, food court and game area. In Hazelwood, off Interstate 370, is St. Louis Mills, which offers customers hundreds of retail, restaurant and entertainment options. With 13 anchor stores and six neighborhoods that feature an exciting array of home, fashion, personal care and entertainment products, this mall hums with activity every day of the week. Cabela’s, the newest addition to the mall, brings the outdoors inside with its unique blending of wildlife displays and retail showrooms. Whether you are rehabbing a home, searching for the latest Pulitzer-prizewinning novel, looking for a new outfit for your next dinner date, needing to pamper your pet or yourself, or just picking up a gallon of milk, the numerous community strip centers throughout North County make shopping extremely convenient. more. Old Town in Florissant is home to retail shops specializing in antiques and collectibles, gift items, home décor, jewelry, floral arrangements, and crafts. Many service businesses, such as doctors, attorneys, financial advisors and accountants, enjoy the historical, casual atmosphere this area offers. Plus, one of the area’s finest dining establishments is located here: Hendel’s Market Café, known for its gourmet food prepared by an outstanding chef and presented to please any palate, also offers patio dining under the beautiful night sky. Another must-visit is Ferguson CityWalk, one of the area’s most vibrant and charming business districts. Within its 10 blocks, you will find 25 restaurants, as well as specialty shops, art and music venues, service businesses, and other attractions. The historic buildings showcase many architectural styles, and some even offer loft-style living. Originally grown up around a train depot, this charming community’s downtown area has recently experienced a major revitalization that allowed its history to remain while new growth and expansion occurred. A great place to have dinner before a night at the Touhill Performing Arts Center is Vincenzo’s Italian Restaurant, while coffee lovers won’t want to miss the Corner Coffee Café. Both are located on Florissant Road. Here’s a tip: If you aren’t a coffee drinker, try Corner Coffee Café’s hot chocolate, it’s the best in town. If you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, stop in at the Whistle Stop Café in Ferguson. This renovated train station is the perfect spot to grab a delicious sandwich and a drink for lunch or dinner. It

is also the best place in Ferguson to get a delicious scoop of frozen custard! Finding the perfect meal that appeals to the senses and delights the taste buds is an easy task in North St. Louis County. With hundreds of restaurants to choose from, both residents and visitors are sure to enjoy their dining experiences. Several restaurants have chosen to make North County their only home in the greater St. Louis area, and their customers come here often from throughout the region. Fleur de Lis Tea Room and Helfer’s Bakery and Deli, in historic downtown Florissant, and Diamond Anna’s Secret Garden Café and Deavers, in Hazelwood, offer wonderful lunch menus as well as other tempting treats. While you are having lunch at Fleur de Lis Tea Room, be sure to ask about “high tea.” There are restaurants of every ethnicity in the North County area. From Italian to Greek, Chinese to Mexican, there is something for everyone’s taste and budget. Try the famous toasted ravioli at Lombardo’s near the Drury Inn by the airport. Pretend you are dining on a street in old Italy at Cannoli’s Restaurant. For the best fried chicken in town, try Cristo’s on Riverview Drive. Sweetie Pie’s in Dellwood is serving up soul food and pecan pie. Spiro’s, known for its Athenian Broil process, is the area’s premier Greek/ American restaurant, still serving at its original location on Natural Bridge Road. You’ll find barbecue, slow-cooked over hickory in an award-winning barbecue sauce, at Ms. Piggies Smokehouse on Page Avenue. Locals argue over who has the best pizza around, but usually Pironnes or Faraci’s surface to the top. Mexican lovers beware. With dozens of authentic Mexican restaurants in the area, such as Hacienda and Las Palmas

on Woodson Road, it is hard to choose which one to try first. For Southern cooking, try Down Home Elegance in Bellefontaine Neighbors. Take a step back in time and enjoy a good old-fashioned burger and shake at Chuck-A-Burger on St. Charles Rock Road in St. Johns — they actually still have car hops! Limestone’s in Maryland Heights offers an all-American fare and has the best pub pretzels in town. Locals claim that the best prime rib in town is served at Yacovelli’s, located right off of I-270. They also have great specials for couples on Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve and offer a pleasant banquet center for weddings and other special occasions. Rock River Grill, at the St. Louis Airport Marriott Hotel, is the place for a fine, but relaxing, breakfast, lunch or dinner. The stone fireplace and mesquite aromas are great accompaniments for their steaks, seafood and sandwiches. Gooey Butter cake, a St. Louis tradition, is served here. Rock River Tavern serves beverages and menu items in a casual atmosphere, complete with nine flatscreen televisions for enjoying a Cardinals, Blues or Rams game.
