Guide to Chamber Services What We Can Do for You Advocacy The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber is the metro area’s single most powerful advocacy group for business. Member involvement strengthens the voice of business so that the best interests of the private sector are heard at all levels of government. Business issues are represented in the legislature by contract lobbyists and ongoing communication with government officials. The Chamber works diligently to identify and impact public policy and regional issues to make Tacoma-Pierce County’s business environment prosperous. Legislative advocacy efforts are bolstered by Chamber programs and committees that take on focused challenges that include energy, water, and waste management. Through its advocacy efforts, the Chamber plays a vital role

in sustaining and building our area’s economy and in the success of individual businesses throughout our community.

Economic Outlook The Chamber’s Horizons Economic Forecast is a unique event. At this annual breakfast, a report titled Pierce County Economic Index (PCEI) is presented to the community. The forecast encourages local businesses to plan for the best strategic positioning in the new fiscal year. The event features a prominent national economist and local speakers who focus on aspects of economic activity in the region.

Alaska Alaska-related businesses are growing at a rate equivalent to adding a new 1,000-employee company annually to the Puget Sound. That’s the bottom line in an economic impact study commissioned by the Alaska Committees of the Tacoma-Pierce County and Greater Seattle Chambers. Our Chamber’s Alaska Committee promotes the local Alaska connection through targeted programs that enhance this strong economic relationship. The “Alaska: Tacoma’s North Star” theme promotes the exchange of Tacoma and Alaska business leader delegations and programs throughout the year. A principal example is our integral part in the annual Alaska State Chamber Conference and Trade Show, dedicated to Alaska business and trade development.

Business-to-Business Trade The Chamber’s Business Expo is the largest business-to-business trade show in the Puget Sound. This premier two-day event continues to grow, with more than 125 exhibitors who gather to share their wares and services with more than 3,500 attendees annually. Business EXPO is the leading opportunity for members to network and market and is combined with the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and breakfast, held the second morning of the event.

International Trade The Chamber, an E-Award recipient, is a proactive advocate for international trade. We take responsibility for public policy leadership, and we speak out for free trade with elected officials and public policy makers. We also supplement this advocacy through a broad range of other tasks, from the support of trade missions to the processing of Certificates of Origin.

Military Affairs We work to protect the military value of Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base as power projection platforms with the surge potential they hold in association with the National Strategic Port (NPS), the Port of Tacoma. In addition to other traditional programs offered to cement personal relations with civic and military leaders, the Chamber is also a key advocate before the state legislature and congressional delegations. Our annual Washington-to-Washington, D.C., trip includes a visit to the Pentagon.

TEACH The Chamber’s 2009 Legislative Agenda

T

he Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber is committed to legislation and funding for economic revitalization, growth, and prosperity. We promote a broad political agenda with targeted goals. Each year, the Chamber’s Public Affairs Council outlines those goals within the framework of our TEACH agenda. The Chamber acts on its agenda by meeting with legislators and policy makers throughout the year. Staff and volunteers ensure the

20 Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber

Chamber message is heard loud and clear — in our state capital and in our nation’s capital. Each letter in the TEACH acronym represents a key priority for the Chamber. This year, the focus of the Chamber is to select only a few issues per key priority. The “T” stands for transportation and infrastructure enhancement. This critical element in the agenda is formulated around the project list supported by the Regional Access and Mobility Partnership (RAMP), a group comprised of representatives from the Chamber, Port, County, City of Tacoma, and local area businesses and community organizations. Our top priority will be funding for a study of tolling as a financing tool for SR-167. “E” represents the idea of economic development for our region, along with a sound energy policy. Key provisions include support for enhancement of the state’s LIFT finance program for public–private development partnerships, additional funding for the purchase of clear zone property infringing upon McChord AFB and other military bases, and increased natural gas capacity in our area. “A” stands for the accountability of government. The Chamber would like to see adherence to past recommendations by government reform panels, including the Priorities of Government recommendations for state budgets, which appears to have a role in the budget process so far. “C” in the TEACH agenda represents community development and workforce training. In this section of the agenda, the Chamber states its support for the education system and its adherence to established academic standards. The Chamber supports funding of new construction and program development for the UW Tacoma and local area vocational and technical colleges. “H” in the TEACH agenda stands for health care. As costs for providing even basic health care for employees continue to rise, the business community understands the importance of this issue. The Chamber therefore supports a more limited basic health care package that would allow small businesses to cover their workforce and would seek state policies that support the use of health information technology, such as electronic health records and electronic prescribing, as a way to reduce costs and improve efficiencies.

Get Moving! Transportation Initiative

T

he Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber is proud to partner with the City of Tacoma, Pierce Transit, and Pierce County in Downtown: On the Go!, a collective effort to encourage downtown commuters and residents to use public transportation, bike, walk, and share rides instead of driving alone. With fluctuating gas prices and challenging economic times, transportation and parking costs are a major concern for businesses and employees. The Chamber works closely with our partners to provide tools, resources, and information to address these challenges. We offer individualized consultations and support in developing Employer Transportation Programs, including free bus passes, great prizes and incentives, educational opportunities, marketing materials, and more. If you are interested in starting or enhancing an employer transportation program, or if you’d like to learn more about your commute options, visit www.piercetrips.com, or contact Jessica Holden at jessicah@tacomachamber.org or 253-627-2175.

Why Belong to the Chamber? Our Membership Tells the Story The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber advocates for your business.

“The Chamber has been a very strong advocate for the Pierce County Skills Center, going out of its way to make sure that the resolution was available to present to the legislators. This is all part of an opportunity to expand the workforce and for kids to understand the significance of education and training.” Tom Siegel, Superintendent, Bethel School District “The Chamber has been a phenomenal advocate for UW Tacoma — not just for our campus, but for higher education in general. They have totally understood the importance of higher education in economic development, in the creation of jobs, and in raising the standard of living in this entire community.” Patricia Spakes, Chancellor, UWT

“The Chamber does a lot of good work for businesses by going to Washington, D.C., and advocating for business in the area; putting in a lot of work with the Cross Base highway; and making sure that the military stay here in our area.” Kathy Weller, Account Manager, Brown and Brown Get connected through events and programs.

“We noticed the young professional demographic moving here but not getting connected. So through the Chamber’s Leadership Program we were able to identify that as a need and bring people together.” Bett Simpson, Sales Manager, Sound Refining

Experience the benefits of diversity through a variety of opinions, skills, decision styles, and backgrounds valued within the Chamber family.

“One of the great things about the Chamber is that it involves a number of people throughout the community. And the great effect of that is that it gets people excited to do something — the more people that get excited about it, the greater chance we have at actually taking charge and making something happen. Kathy Hanna, Vice President, CH2M Hill
