Our History “History teaches everything, including the future.”

— Alphonse de Lamartine

T

he city of Valdosta in Lowndes County, Georgia, was incorporated on December 7, 1860, just weeks before the secession of the Southern states and the beginning of the American Civil War. The city and county progressed during the Reconstruction, seeing the first official school established and the construction of a brick courthouse. Expanding rail service and new telephone lines in the late 1800s gave the community the infrastructure it needed for an expanding business sector. By 1912, the community had become home to the magnificent Valdes Hotel, organized a fire department, paved its streets, and established speed limits. The iconic Post Office and Federal Building, which later became the current City Hall, had graced the skyline for just two years at this time. That year also saw the establishment of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, an organization that would both directly and indirectly affect the incredible development of the region over the next 100 years. The list of community and Chamber of Commerce accomplishments is lengthy, but following are some highlights from this century of success.

After 51 years in the insurance industry he retired from Valdosta Insurance Services two years ago, selling his onequarter ownership to his son Len. Carter credits Ben Hill Roberts, founder of the Roberts Insurance Agency, for first encouraging him to get involved with the Chamber. In addition to serving as chairman, Carter headed the Military Affairs Committee and helped develop the Red Carpet events that welcome leaders of Moody Air Force Base. The Red Carpet parties were so popular with military VIPs that other cities began to model their programs after Valdosta’s. An enthusiastic proponent of Chamber membership, Carter said, “If you are going to be in business in Valdosta, you need to be a member. It puts you in a position to grow and benefit from the various programs as well as develop new contacts with other businesses.” In addition to serving on a number of Chamber committees during his membership, Carter has been active in the Kiwanis Club for 50 years, also serving as its president. He was recently honored for officiating high school and college basketball games in the Southeastern Conference for 60 years.

Joe Cordova: 1976 Joe Cordova, retired vice president of Georgia Power Company, has served on more Chamber committees than he can count in addition to his service as chairman. “One of my best memories is the time I spent working on all the bicentennial activities. It was a great effort to be involved with and a lot of fun bringing the community together for the celebration,” he said. for IMPACT 2012. He was also on the Charter Board for Leadership Lowndes during the formative years of the program. “Leadership Lowndes has played a huge role in helping many people develop the skills and confidence they needed to move on to prominent positions in business and industry and to strive to do more for the community,” he said. Cordova is active in the Valdosta Rotary and serves on the Board of Trustees at South Georgia Medical Foundation, where he was also a past president.

Mac McLane: 1985 Arthur “Mac” McLane, best known for his years as the Southern Judicial Circuit’s chief judge, has always found time in his busy schedule for community service. In addition to serving as Chamber chairman, he has been an active member of the Valdosta Rotary Club and served on the Valdosta Symphony Board and the Executive Board for Georgia Sheriffs’ Boys Ranch. McLane was a major champion for construction of the Lowndes County Judicial Complex in downtown Valdosta and now serves as a parttime senior superior court judge. During his years of service at the Chamber he worked on the Charter Board of Directors for Leadership Lowndes and helped develop the program designed to train men and women for community service and future leadership roles. “Leadership Lowndes has far exceeded the original board’s expectations, with most graduates of the program becoming more involved in community service and a great many moving into leadership roles in local and state government, nonprofit organizations, business, and industry,” McLane said.

He has served on the Valdosta State University Foundation Board of Trustees and on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta.

Stan Fillion: 1994 Stan Fillion, vice president of business development at Southwest Georgia Bank, has been a strong supporter of Chamber initiatives and has undertaken a countless number of challenges on various committees. He was tournament director of the South Georgia Classic Golf Tournament for three years, an event that provides a huge boost to the area’s economy each spring, and was one of the Chamber leaders instrumental in developing the IMPACT 2012 campaign. He served on the board of South Georgia Medical Center and has been active in Partnership For Health, an organization that provides financial assistance to cancer patients. Fillion and the nine other IMPACT 2012 leaders shared the A.L. Girardin Award, the Chamber’s highest honor, in 2007. A

community that has prospered as ValdostaLowndes County has done does not enjoy its success merely by accident or good fortune. Such success is the result of hard work and dedication, not only on the part of community leaders, but also on the part of the community itself. The Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce is proud to be part of an active community, where a variety of businesses, groups, and individuals share their ideas, roll up their sleeves, and pitch in to help the region continue to prosper.

Centennial Tree Project Improves Valdosta Landscape To kick off the celebration of its 100th anniversary, the ValdostaLowndes County Chamber, in partnership with the city of Valdosta and the Tree Commission, launched The Centennial Tree Project, with a goal of planting 100 trees in February 2012 to add beauty to the area. Sponsorships of the trees honor or memorialize business leaders, people of note in Valdosta history, mentors, friends, and loved ones. Sponsorships cost $500, which includes purchase of the tree, planting, and maintenance. Carla Penny, chair of the Chamber’s Centennial Planning Committee, says the trees are symbolic of a growing, healthy, progressive community. “Not only will the project add natural beauty to Valdosta, it will serve as a history book of meaningful people in our community,” Penny noted. Stacey Griffin, urban forestry supervisor for the city of Valdosta, produced landscape designs, and sponsored trees were planted in business gateway areas in need of visual improvement. A commemorative plaque listing the names of sponsors and recipients is on display at the Chamber, along with a printed map of tree locations. Chamber Chairman Tim Jones launched the event himself by sponsoring two trees. “The Tree Project provides an opportunity to celebrate the Chamber’s Centennial with an investment that will return benefits for many years to come,” he noted. Georgia Power showed its support by sponsoring 20 trees, making them a Benefactor Tree Sponsor. “Nothing like this has ever been done in Valdosta, and we are happy to be a part of it,” said Terri Lupo, vice president of the South Region for Georgia Power Company.

Drugs Don’t Work Program Benefits Businesses and Employees More than 230 businesses in Valdosta/Lowndes County and 44 businesses in neighboring counties promote a drug-free workplace year-round by participating in the Drugs Don’t Work in South Georgia program. Drugs Don’t Work (DDW) is a regional partnership program among the Valdosta-Lowndes County, Adel-Cook County, Ashburn-Turner County, Douglas-Coffee County, Lakeland Lanier County, Moultrie-Colquitt County, Quitman-Brooks County, and Worth County-Sylvester chambers of commerce. DDW works with businesses of all sizes to implement a comprehensive drug-free workplace program that is effective, efficient, and easy to implement. The program provides businesses with substance abuse policy development, supervisor training, employee education, assistance programs, and drug testing. Participating businesses also receive a 7.5 percent premium discount on Workers Compensation Insurance. Keyara Hamilton, workforce development director at the ValdostaLowndes County Chamber, explains that most businesses already comply with some or all of the program’s requirements and simply need to become a DDW member to become an official drug-free workplace and take advantage of the Chamber’s DDW services and savings. Last year the United States Department of Labor designated October 17–23 as National Drug Free Work Week to highlight the importance of being drug-free to workplace safety and to encourage workers with alcohol and drug problems to seek help. Hamilton noted that the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber is actively promoting the drug-free message and highlighting the benefits that the

DDW program brings to employers, workers, and communities. Longtime participants in DDW have reported that the program helps decrease turnover while improving quality and safety in the workplace.

Valdosta Heritage Foundation Works to Restore Roberts House In January 2011 the Roberts House, a structure that has played a significant role in Valdosta’s history, was destroyed in a fire caused by an electrical failure. Built in 1845 by one of the area’s founders, William E. Wisenbaker, and famous as Valdosta’s oldest home, the landmark was a community treasure, and its loss was devastating not only for the community, but especially for the Valdosta Heritage Foundation, which had been working to restore the house since the 1990s. According to Emily Foster, special projects/historic preservation planner for the Valdosta Historic Preservation Commission, the house was 80 percent restored at the time of the blaze. The fire consumed most of the home, although parts of the structure and some antique furniture were saved. But the people of Valdosta aren’t known for giving up without a fight. In May 2011, after receiving positive feedback from members of the community, the Valdosta Heritage Foundation Board of Directors voted to move forward with restoring the home. Phase one of the project will include stabilizing the structure, rebuilding the frame and roof, and replacing broken windows and doors. Some of the cost to stabilize the home will be covered by insurance, but the Foundation will rely on extensive fundraising efforts and the generosity of local businesses and residents to obtain the funds needed to restore the exterior and interior of the historic house to its former beauty. The Valdosta Heritage Foundation has owned the home for over 12 years since it was donated by J.T. Roberts’ granddaughter, Catherine Redles. Roberts, a respected businessman and one-time mayor of Valdosta, remodeled the home in 1893 to give it its distinctive Victorian look. With the help of an always generous Valdosta community, the Foundation hopes this phoenix will rise from the ashes in all its splendor once more.

Empty Stocking Fund Makes Christmas Merrier for Local Children The Empty Stocking Fund, a tradition in Valdosta for decades, makes sure that needy children in Lowndes County have toys at Christmas. This community effort, made possible by generous donations from local citizens and the help of long-time sponsors Guardian Bank, the Valdosta Daily Times, and the Salvation Army, raised more than $20,000 last year, according to Margie Blanton, human resources officer at Guardian Bank. Blanton has volunteered to manage the donations for the last six years. The Salvation Army oversees the program, handling applications from thousands of families requesting help and ensuring that recipients are not receiving toys from other organizations. The Outback Riders, a group of local motorcycle enthusiasts, conducts an annual Toy Ride each year to assist The Salvation Army with acquiring additional toys to distribute to thousands of children living at or below the poverty level. Individuals and businesses also contribute to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program with donations of specific items children have requested, including toys, clothing, books, and school supplies.

South Georgia Medical Center www.sgmc.org

SGMC Offers a History of Healthcare Excellence Like so many noteworthy businesses in the area, South Georgia Medical Center’s roots run deep. Opened on July 1, 1955, Pineview General Hospital, as it was called, was the first public hospital in Valdosta. Pineview had approximately 100 employees and a 40-member medical staff who practiced family medicine, dentistry, general surgery, and obstetrics, to name a few specialties. As a public, not-for-profit hospital, Pineview was established under the Hospital Authority Law of the State of Georgia, and today, SGMC continues to be governed by an eight-member volunteer board which comprises the Hospital Authority of Valdosta and Lowndes County. This means that revenues generated by the hospital are turned back into the facility for new technology and capital improvements. In its early years, Pineview grew quickly. On October 20, 1971, the Hospital Authority approved changing the name of the hospital to South Georgia Medical Center to reflect the hospital’s regional health provider status. Since then, SGMC has continued to grow into a robust 380-bed medical center. With robotic-assisted surgery, open-heart surgery, and comprehensive cancer care, SGMC offers many services found only in metropolitan hospitals. For the past two years, Georgia Trend Magazine has listed SGMC’s spine surgery and cardiac surgery programs as ranking in the top 10 in Georgia. The Pearlman Cancer Center, which www.valdostachamber.com –

offers radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and clinical trials, consistently meets and/or exceeds national benchmarks for quality cancer care. The Birthplace at SGMC consistently delivers more babies than any other hospital in the region, and the Level II Nursery just added the services of the region’s first, hospital-based neonatologist. A new Stroke Program brings the expertise of a stroke-trained neurologist to treat emergency cases and hospital inpatients. To improve access for customers needing outpatient imaging, SGMC opened a beautiful, modern Imaging Center and Women’s Imaging Center in the SGMC Professional Building. The Imaging Center is the only facility in the region to have a 64-slice CT scanner and the region’s first fixed-base positron emission tomography (PET) scanner, a device used in the tracking and treating of cancer. In the near future, a modern, five-story patient tower will be built next to the SGMC Outpatient Center. The Tower will house a new Dasher Heart Center, as well as allow the hospital to transition to all-private patient rooms. In 2011, SGMC acquired SMITH Northview Hospital, which operates as a 45-bed campus of SGMC. This acquisition brought the total bed count up to 380 and the total number of affiliated physicians to over 300. SMITH Northview operates as a full-service hospital providing general surgeries, newborn deliveries, inpatient care, and intensive care. SMITH Northview also operates the Joseph M. Still Burn Clinic, an affiliate of the Augusta burn center. Whether you chose SGMC or SMITH Northview for your family’s health care, in all that the staff members do, they want to demonstrate better outcomes and compassionate, courteous care. OurFocus “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” — Benjamin Franklin

22 – Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce

P

romoting economic growth — particularly in the knowledgebased business sector — is one of the primary goals of the ValdostaLowndes County Chamber of Commerce. As society and the workplace continue to evolve, massive growth is taking place in sectors requiring high levels of education and special skills, such as health care and information technology. For a region to prosper in the 21st century, it is vitally important to foster a welcoming and nurturing environment for these knowledge-based industries. It is equally important to build, attract, and retain a strong workforce of young professionals, not only by ensuring that they have access to the education and experience needed by these challenging industries, but also by creating a vibrant community they’ll enjoy living in.

An Entrepreneurial Economy To foster expansion in three high-growth clusters — information technology, environmental technology, and medical services — the Chamber has launched several new programs over the last few years, including Home Grown Entrepreneurs, The Seeds Business Resource Center, and the MetroOne Young Business Professionals network. Impact 2012, a business plan adopted in 2008, provided funding to move forward with the initiative to boost jobs in the three high-growth clusters. The Valdosta and Lowndes Expansion Team (VALET) has also joined the mission to enhance the pro-business environment. The Chamber has also developed the Opportunity Central initiative to help increase the number of jobs available for college graduates and to enhance the quality of life for all metro Valdosta residents. Opportunity Central focuses on facilitating the growth of jobs, connecting the business community to the talent in local colleges and universities, and cultivating a community where the highly educated want to live. The longterm goal is to create new jobs for graduates of Valdosta State University and Wiregrass Technical College and to increase average weekly wages through economic development and business expansion initiatives.

An Emphasis on Education The Talent Connection, a partnership among the Chamber, VSU, and Wiregrass Technical College, offers an easy way for businesses to offer internships to students. At www.opportunitycentral.net/talent, businesses can sign up to offer internships, and students can find out what internships are available and how to apply. Keyara Hamilton, the Chamber’s

24 – Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce

business development director, says the goal is for many of the internships to become full-time jobs. Valdosta State University and Wiregrass College have also partnered with South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) to train skilled workers who are ready to hit the ground running in high-demand health care jobs when they graduate. SGMC has invested in the Chamber’s Impact 2012 initiative and other programs targeting growth and economic development. As the largest non-governmental employer in Lowndes County, it provides jobs for over 2,300 people. SGMC works closely with Wiregrass College and Valdosta University to ensure future health care workers are receiving the training they need. In response to the ongoing shortage of highly skilled health care workers, SGMC provides scholarships, internships, mentoring, and clinical training to help students achieve their dream of pursuing health care careers in Valdosta-Lowndes County. Scholarships assist students enrolled in registered nursing, rehab therapy, and pharmacy courses. The ongoing partnership between Valdosta State University and SGMC is expected to yield even more highly qualified health care workers with the addition of more hands-on training programs in the future.

“MetroOne provides networking and professional growth opportunities but it also promotes involvement with other community service programs,” she explained. MetroOne members can take advantage of forum presentations and discussions with regional professionals, lunch workshops, professional development seminars, local restaurant tours, and more. As part of their community service initiative, the group developed a list of 100 fun opportunities to enjoy in Valdosta. A dedicated website featuring the information went live in January 2012.

An Enriched Environment Building a great community for young adults is another important focus. In addition to Opportunity Central, the Chamber sponsors the MetroOne program for young professionals. Designed for ages 21–40, the program provides members with a common goal of making Valdosta a great place for young professionals to live, work, play, and stay. According to Hamilton, the mission of MetroOne is to foster leadership development and personal enrichment and strengthen the community’s ability to attract and retain young professionals.

Our Future “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”

— Franklin D. Roosevelt Choices Workshops Help Students Set Goals for the Future Choices, a program sponsored by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, is a collaborative effort between the school systems and the business community to help improve high school graduation rates. The Choices program focuses on academic selfdiscipline, goal setting, and time and money management and stresses the importance of continuing education, basic employability skills, life skills, and character development. For over 10 years local businesses, service clubs, and community organizations have volunteered to present workshops in schools. Each workshop consists of two 50-minute class periods delivered on one or two consecutive days. A detailed plan and activities help students better comprehend each section. Plans are kept flexible so each volunteer can tailor their experiences and personality to fit the program. “All presenters receive training and a kit with a course guide, activity props, and handouts. We encourage them to add their own spin on various topics,” Keyara Hamilton, the Chamber’s workforce development director, explained. The workshops reach approximately 1,000 students at the eighth grade level each year. Workshop leaders are positive role models from the community who have a genuine desire to help young people stay in school and set goals for the future. “Choices is so rewarding for both the kids and the presenters,” Hamilton said. “It is so great to see kids get excited when they realize they can start doing things now to take charge of their lives.”

Hamilton notes that when a student drops out of school it creates a ripple effect, with unfavorable consequences that impact the student, his or her family, the community, the state, and the nation. For presenters, participation in the workshops offers a chance to help teens face the reality of what happens if they drop out of school. The program helps them focus on what they can do now to prepare for the future and what additional steps they can take in high school to help them prepare for various career and educational options. “The Choices program helps students zero in on where they want to be in the future and figure out what they need to do to achieve the kind of life they want,” said Curt Fowler, president of Fowler & Company. Fowler has been a workshop presenter and encourages other local businesspeople to get involved. “Any time you can improve the future of young people, you are making a positive impact on the success of the community,” he said. “When we create a better workforce, we improve our chances of attracting quality employers to the area.” Allan Dear, of Allan Dear Real Estate, says he enjoyed being a workshop presenter and hopes more local business leaders will step up to get involved in the program. “Choices helps kids see how decisions they make now can affect the lives they will have as adults,” he said. “The workshops provide a chance for business partners and the Chamber to show how local businesses can be positive role models in the schools.”

Preserving Our Architectural Treasures The Valdosta Heritage Foundation and the Valdosta-Lowndes County Convention & Visitors Bureau are ardent supporters of historic preservation. Residents and visitors are invited to tour Valdosta’s three National Register Historic districts — Downtown, North Patterson Street, and Victorian Fairview — and see the architectural gems lovingly restored by local organizations and residents. Here’s a sampling of some of Valdosta’s treasures:

Downtown Valdosta C.C. Varnedoe’s, an exquisite High Victorian Italianate structure with Queen Anne detailing, began as a general store in 1871 and housed Varnedoe’s, a women’s clothing store, for more than 60 years. The Peeples Building, a Victorian-era commercial building constructed in 1885, was the office of Valdosta’s first insurance agency, established by Judge R.A. Peeples in 1872. Since the 1940s it has been the home of King’s Grill, known for its Southern comfort food and old-time diner ambience. The Lowndes County Courthouse, constructed in 1904, is an example of the Classical Revival style. Considered one of the most elaborate courthouses in Georgia, it features corner domes, a striking Southern portico, and an impressive central dome. The Carnegie Library, notable as the first public building designed by local architect Lloyd B. Greer, was a public library from 1913–1976. Today it is home to the Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum, which offers an extensive collection of historic photographs, costumes, and memorabilia. The First Baptist Church, built in 1899, features an eclectic mix of Queen Anne and Romanesque styles on the exterior and an elaborate wood truss ceiling and stained glass windows on the interior.

34 – Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce

North Patterson Street The First Presbyterian Church, built in 1909, is a Romanesque interpretation of a classical Greek temple, and the First United Methodist Church, built in the late Victorian era, features towers, spires and buttresses, Gothic woodwork, and a majestic cathedral ceiling. Historic residences include the Converse-Dalton-Ferrell House and The Crescent, former home of U.S. Senator William S. West. Built in 1897, The Crescent is a grand, neoclassical home boasting a semicircular portico supported by 13 Doric columns. The BarberPittman House, built in 1915 and restored in 1979, is now home to the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce.

Victorian Fairview The Victorian Fairview District boasts many historic Victorian homes, including the Pardee-Cranford-Cribbs House, Hunt House, Harvey-Coffee House, and the Myddelton-Green House, now the Fairview Inn Bed and Breakfast. Built in the late 1890s and early 1900s, the stately homes have been meticulously restored with features including expansive front porches, finely crafted woodwork, and ornate paneled wainscoting.

Tours A leisurely stroll is a great way to explore the Downtown District. A PDF guide can be downloaded at www.valdostamainstreet. com. Historic driving tour maps are available at the offices of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at One Meeting Place at Exit 16 off I-75. Still Strong, Still Local, Still Focused on the Future Citizens Community Bank 3261 N. Valdosta Rd Valdosta, GA 31604 (229) 241-0123 citizenscommunitybank.net

Equal Housing Lender - Member FDIC In 1927, the late D.K. Hollis Sr. realized his dream of chartering a new financial institution. The new bank was called Citizens Bank of Hahira, and it operated a branch in Morven known as Citizens Bank of Morven. A change in branch banking laws later that same year would cause Hollis to re-charter the bank as Citizens Bank of Morven. A group of Atlanta investors took over the Hahira bank, and they subsequently folded during the Great Depression while the Morven bank survived.

Pictured L to R: Glenn Copeland, CEO; D.K. Hollis, Chairman of the Board; Star Waldron, CFO; and Tim Jones, President.

The newly chartered Citizens Bank of Morven had assets of $41,244 in 1927. The bank continued to prosper, and years later, Hollis Sr. moved the headquarters from Morven back to Hahira. He managed the bank’s growth to over $1.3 million before he passed away in 1960. Little did he know that his dream in 1927 would continue to grow in financial strength and community impact into the next century.

That was over 80 years ago. Today the bank has $123 million in assets, with two branches in Valdosta (North Valdosta Road and Baytree Road), a branch in Morven, and headquarters in Hahira. The name was changed to Citizens Community Bank in the 1980s to reflect its growing presence within Lowndes and Brooks Counties. Executive management now consists of D.K. Hollis Jr., Chairman of the Board, Glenn Copeland, Chief Executive Officer and Tim Jones, President. A third-generation Hollis, Starling H. Waldron joined the bank in 2003 as controller and has risen to be the bank’s Chief Financial Officer and Vice-Chairman of the Board. “It has been an amazing opportunity to come back to Hahira and work with my father and get to learn the banking business directly from him. I have learned that it is not always about making a profit, but about being fair to the customer. I think every employee at our bank feels this way as well,” Waldron said. Other members of the Hollis family involved in the bank include Board of Directors Judy Hollis, David K. Hollis III, and C. Todd Hollis. Through the years, D.K. Hollis Jr. has attracted and groomed a talented group of people to help run the bank. Fifteen people have over 10 years of employment with the bank, and one employee (Martha “Mott” York) has 52 years of service with the bank in Morven.

D.K. Hollis Jr. was 23 when his father died, but he had worked in the family bank for several years, earned his business degree from the University of Georgia, and had become Mayor of Hahira. “I was too young to even get scared,” Hollis Jr. said about his father’s passing. He was named President of the bank when his father died and he had to place his political opportunities aside to focus on the bank that his father had started.

“This loyalty among the staff has translated into a bank that now serves five generations of customers,” said Glenn Copeland. “I came from a big bank environment where it was becoming harder to bank my customers the way they deserved to be banked. I have thoroughly enjoyed the 20 years that I have had to do business the way our true community bank operates.”

Branch Managers, Pictured L to R: Linda Hall, Zeke Dorsey, Vicki Lindsey, and C.H. Hobrat.

While the bank offers traditional bank accounts, ACH originations, Remote Deposit Capture, and Internet Banking as some of its products, management’s philosophy continues to place more emphasis than ever on good old-fashioned personal service. “In a time where most banks are distancing themselves from the customer through technology, we feel that our high-touch personal service puts us a step above the rest,” said Tim Jones. “The bank will continue to be competitive with technologydriven services, but we feel that our niche is what D.K. Hollis Sr. started in 1927, and it is timeless: Provide good customer service, products at a fair price, and always try to exceed the customer’s expectations.” The bank also owns the Remerton Agency, Inc., d/b/a Star Insurance, a full-service insurance agency offering Property and Casualty products as well as Life insurance and Annuities.

Angie Crawford State Farm

Like A Good Neighbor State Farm Is There®

A bility met opportunity four years ago in Valdosta when second-generation State

Farm Agent Angie Crawford assumed responsibility for the long-standing insurance office of retiring agent Bryant Martin. While her current tenure is four years, Angie is no newcomer to this area. She was born in Valdosta three years before a job transfer moved her family away from South Georgia. Angie’s father, Arthur Strom, was a Valdosta High graduate. His 1957 football letterman’s jacket hangs in the 1106 Gornto Road office as a reminder of Angie’s deep family roots in Valdosta. Angie’s insurance industry ties date back nearly 30 years. As a preteen, she helped out in her father’s own State Farm office. Angie received her BBA from Georgia State University and soon afterward began work in the insurance field. She started her State Farm career in 1995, and today is one of the top State Farm agents in Valdosta. Angie’s credentials include Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), Chartered Advisor for Senior Living (CASL), and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). Angie believes in giving back to the community she calls home. She is a member of Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, and WOAMTEC. She also volunteers her time for many community organizations including the March of Dimes. Angie and her team understand the unique needs of families relocating to Hahira, Lake Park, Moody AFB, and all over Lowndes County. “Our vision is to have a professional, productive, and inviting office that offers our clients extraordinary service by a team of experts who truly care,” says Angie of her entire team. She adds that her personal goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of people in her community.
