Rotary gearing up for biggest month of events

By Jessica oaTes While many have likely heard of Rotary, few may actually realize the impact the organization has on their immediate community and on the world. Bordentown Rotary provides service to others and promotes integrity, goodwill and peace through fellowship of local business and community leaders. But what does this really mean? Guided by the motto “service before self,” the Bordentown chapter of the world’s largest service organization raises funds through whatever means possible to serve those in need. April is one of Bordentown Rotary’s biggest fundraising months. On Thursday, April 23, people will gather for a fun and philanthropic evening at Rotary’s second annual wine and beer tasting fundraiser at Old York Country Club. April also marks the time of year when the Rotary organizes its annual Can-a-thon event. Last year, Bordentown Rotarians, together with students from the Interact Club (a high school version of Rotary) exceeded their lofty goal of raising $15k worth of canned goods. Rather than serving one pantry as they intended, enough food was raised to stock the shelves of four. This year, Rotary will be at it again, asking shoppers at local supermarkets to pick up some extra cans during their shopping trips and See ROTARY, Page 8

Gordon scores 1,000th point Scotties advance to state sectional championship By Ken WeingaRTneR If there were lessons to be learned as the Bordentown Regional High School boys’ basketball team progressed through its season, Scotties’ coach John Myers hoped his players recognized they applied to not only the game itself but to life outside the gym as well. His message appeared to hit home. Bordentown enjoyed a memorable season, going 24-6 and,

in somewhat of a surprise, advancing to the state sectional championship game. The Scotties more than doubled their victory total from the previous season, blending confidence and cohesiveness into a winning formula. “I want these kids to believe that when they put their mind to something they can do it,” Myers said. “I use basketball because I happen to be the basketball coach. But I really talk to them more about handling things in life. Things aren’t always going to be perfect and you have to battle your way through it. These kids became battlers. They really battled all the time.”

Matt Culda, a senior and cocaptain, said the Scotties’ ability to deal with the highs and lows of the season was one of the keys to the squad’s success. “Just keeping our heads up and working hard,” Culda said. “Always having confidence in ourselves no matter the ups and downs we had. We just believed we could do it. We always kept in mind what we wanted to do and what our goals were. Not panicking when times were tough; always keep grinding and working hard. Life is a cycle; there are going to be ups and downs. Whenever I’m struggling, I just need to remember that it’s going to go See GORDON, Page 6

A framed black and white photograph hangs in Bryan Grigsby’s Bordentown home, a vivid reminder of the wartime reality he once witnessed. Almost 50 years later, Grigsby can still recall the events of that day, when he, Rick Griffith and Howard Breedlove documented the combat in progress along Plantation Road in Vietnam. From 1967-1970, Grigsby served with the Department of the Army Special Photo Office, spending a total of seven and a half months documenting the combat in the Vietnam War through still photography and audio recordings. The date he took the photo was May 6, 1968. Grigsby, on his second mission of the day, had set out with Griffith and Breedlove to film the house-tohouse street fighting that was happening in Saigon. The scene unfolded like that of a movie, he recalled. Near the area where shooting had already begun, Breedlove began setting up his camera equipment; only moments later, Grigsby heard him shout, “I’m hit!” Grigsby and Griffith raced to tend to him—he’d been wounded by a piece of shrapnel—and as Griffith wrapped a tourniquet around Breedlove’s leg, Grigsby captured the See GRIGSBY, Page 10

Township preparing second annual egg hunt Bordentown is set to hold its second annual Easter egg hunt on April 4 at Northern Community Park. The free event is another way the township hopes to continue building a sense of community in Bordentown. “We’ve been trying to create services that the community would enjoy,” Mayor Jim Cann said. The goal of these community-wide events is to encourage residents to meet each other and pull the town closer together. Children ages 2-9 are welcomed to participate in the event. Every child must be accompanied and supervised by

an adult in order to join in the festivities. For the event, Northern Community Park will be divided into age groups to make the hunt fair for children of all ages. All eggs will be filled with candy. Participants are responsible for bringing their own container to carry the candy filled eggs. While last year’s event started out with only a few hundred eggs, the township is preparing for a much larger even turnout. Building on their success from last year, event organizers have increased the number of eggs that kids can find. This year, there will be more than 1,000 eggs for kids to discover

while they explore the park. During the hunt, children in each age group will also be competing to find the “golden egg.” Whoever finds this elusive egg will win a grand prize when the event is over. Every child participating in the event will get a special gift basket filled with candy. The lucky children who find the golden eggs will get a special basket filled with candy and toys appropriate for their age group. Families who show up to the event will also receive five tree seedlings donated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

The Easter Bunny is also set to be making a special appearance at the event once the hunt is over. Parents will have the opportunity to photograph their child with the beloved bunny. The event will begin at 10 a.m., with registration starting at 9:30. Organizers advise that participants should get there as early as possible. “The eggs go fast,” Cann said. As of press time, there was no rain date set in case of inclement weather. For more information, go online to the township website at bordentowntownship.com. –Michael Nunes

GORDON continued from Page 1 back up.” The team’s first game in the Central Jersey Group II tournament was a big one. Not only did they have to win to advance, but junior Myron Gordon entered the game just six points shy of the 1,000-point milestone. Sure enough, Gordon, who averaged 22 points per game this season, hit the mark. “That was my individual goal for this year,” he said. “It meant a lot to me. And now I can come into next year and not have to focus on it.” In the regular season, Bordentown rallied from an eight-point deficit with 2:13 to play to beat Haddon Heights. In the Central Jersey Group II tournament, the eighth-seeded Scotties continued that tradition and again rallied from late deficits to knock off No. 1-seed Lakewood in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven in the semis. The Lakewood rally, from five points down with 1:04 to go, came after Gordon, Burlington County’s top scorer, fouled out. But seniors Brion Teel-Scott and Jon Vasil hit 3-pointers to fuel the comeback, and five different Scotties made free throws in the fourth quarter. Eleven Bordentown players saw action in the game. “They learned to be a unit,” Myers said. “They had to recognize that each of them had their own strengths and no one was more or less important. Everyone had a part. It might not be 32 minutes or 20 points or 16 rebounds, but they have a part that will make a difference in the game. At some place at some time, they all made a difference in a game.” Bordentown won 17 of its final 20 games of the season, with the only losses coming to powerful Trenton Catholic, Pemberton and Manasquan in the state sectional final. The Scotties avenged the Pemberton setback with a win in the opening round of the state tourney. “Nobody thought we could do it; only we thought we could do it,” Gordon said about Bordentown’s postseason run. “We owe it all to Coach. He’s done a lot to help develop us as a team and to make us stronger. We thought we could get as far as anybody, even to the [Tournament of Champions]. We just came up short.” The squad, he added, always knew it was skilled. “We just had to put the pieces together,” he said. “I knew we were a special team from the first game. We just had to keep building and getting stronger. We never gave up. Our offense was shaky sometimes, our defense was shaky sometimes, but we always had heart. We weren’t going to let a team step all over us.” Darnill Brown, Dante Gipson, Manny Ansong, Mike Giorgianni, Culda, Vasil and Teel-Scott were among the Scotties’ remaining top scorers. Seniors on the squad were Teel-Scott,

Culda, Vasil, Giorgianni, Drew Chiszar and Dom Nemeth. “They’re great kids; I love them to death,” Myers said. “That is the hard part of high school basketball, saying goodbye to kids, because you build such a relationship with these players.” Culda, who plans to focus on a pre-law degree in college, said he would miss his days on the hardwood. “I’ve been playing basketball my whole life,” Culda said. “I love the thrill of the game. Winning helps a lot, but I just loved playing. It’s been an amazing ride. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” And while some people might have been surprised by the Scotties’ ride through the state tourney, the players and coach were not among them. “I had my expectations for this team,” said Myers, who saw Bordentown finish second to state Top 10-squad Ewing in the 2014 Moody Park summer league, which proved to be a springboard for the scholastic season. “I really believed this. I was really expecting us to play hard all the time, and they did. It was great. It was a great run.”

ROTARY continued from Page 1 make donations on their way out. Rotarians and Interact club members will take shifts at The New Egypt Marketplace as well as at the Shop Rite and Acme supermarkets in Bordentown. While each chapter’s humanitarian efforts are concentrated locally, the organization comes together to make a global impact, too. Projects include raising funds and collecting donations for area food pantries, donating holiday food baskets to those in need, supporting local fire, police and first aid departments, assisting families who endure catastrophic loss, and larger initiatives such as helping bring clean water to those in other countries who don’t have access to it, and even eradicating polio. Rotary also hosts yearly dinners to raise funds to fly doctors to underprivileged children with heart conditions around the world whose families cannot afford the treatment they need. Rotary is also heavily involved in education and youth leadership. Bordentown Rotarians mentor students from Northern Burlington, Bordentown, New Egypt, and Florence High Schools who are members of the Interact Club. While it is typical for a Rotary Chapter to support 1–2 high schools at a time, Bordentown Rotary provides mentorship to all 4 schools as well and collaborates with students on various community service projects and fundraising efforts. Bordentown Rotary past president Brian Flynn said he joined Rotary specifically for the opportunity to work with kids again. Flynn, who lives in Columbus, and runs a wealth management and

Much like Flynn, Dawn Moore joined Rotary after years of volunteering as a Girl Scout troop leader and cheerleading coach when her children were younger. Moore, who also lives in Columbus, said that she was attracted to Rotary because it is first and foremost a service organization. “We give back locally and globally,” she said. “It is beyond a networking or business organization, though there are

I knew some of the people who belonged to Rotary and I knew they were good people, but until I joined, I didn’t realize everything that Rotary does.” Moore owns Huber-Moore Funeral Home in Bordentown. Bordentown Rotary President, Judy Margulies, also said the main goal of Rotary is to provide service to those in need. “Many people in Rotary feel very fortunate and want to pay it forward to others in the community,” she said. She emphasized that Rotarians have a good time while carrying out their mission of service. “We’re not a bunch of stuffy old men sitting around smoking cigars,” she said. “We spend a lot of time thinking about how to get people involved and how to make sure members are having a good time at our meetings. We have parties, we eat, drink, and make merry, but we also brainstorm about how we can help our community and how we can do a better job than we have done before.” Margulies, of Chesterfield, is a branch manager at Beneficial Bank in Bordentown. Her former commute to Philadelphia for work left her with little time to get involved in the community. When she started working in Bordentown, the time was right for her to see what Rotary was all about. “We are not a business marketing group,” she said. “Along the way we meet people from different walks of life, and there are times when we do business with them, but business is not the

She attends meetings with students to see where Rotary and Interact can coordinate efforts. Margulies said she is happy that the organization experienced substantial growth under her administration, but that Bordentown Rotary is always looking for new members. And the best way to find out what Rotary is all about, she said, is to attend a meeting. “We are all busy people,” Moore said. “But if you like to have fun and do good things and be surrounded by great people, make time to come to a meeting and get involved.” The Rotary wine and beer tasting event is scheduled to be held at Old York County Club in Chesterfield from 6:30–9 p.m. with bottles from a variety of different vineyards as well as well as craft beer selections. Proceeds from the evening will benefit college scholarship awards for students in the area, as well as the Bordentown Food Pantry. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are being sold for $55 per person. They include a tasting glass, samplings, and hors d’oeuvres. Br yan Grigsby, of Bordentown, ser ved as a combat cameraman during the Vietnam War from 1967-1970. (Photo by Susan Van Dongen.) and as he reflected on the beginning of his photography work in the army, his one hope was that people remember what happened in Vietnam, and the lack of support for the soldiers who risked their lives, so as never to repeat that moment in history. Leading up to his own enlistment, Grigsby had spent five years in college— changing his major four times—before he finally enlisted as an army bandsman at age 24. While in basic training, though, he switched his military occupational specialty to audio specialist after the White House Communications Agency presented an opportunity for a position where he’d get to live in Washington, DC and cover then-President Lyndon Johnson. But upon his graduation, Grigsby learned those positions had already been filled, and instead received orders to report to Fort Shafter in Hawaii; from

there, Grigsby and other soldiers were sent on three-month missions to Vietnam, South Korea and Thailand. His first mission in 1967 was to South Korea, where he only recorded sound. When he returned from his mission, it was decided there was no need for a full-time sound person, and that Grigsby would be trained in still photography. Ironically, Grigsby was no stranger to photography—in fact, he’d grown up surrounded by it. His father, a serious amateur photographer, had all his own camera equipment and even his own darkroom; meanwhile, Grigsby’s older brother, a chemical engineer, had landed a job at Kodak. “I had grown up in the middle of this and completely ignored it…I didn’t think there was anything to it,” he recalled. Grigsby’s career as a photojournalist after the war began when he was hired as a staff photographer at his hometown paper, The Gainesville Sun. By the time he left the paper seven years later, he was working as chief photographer. He then moved to Missouri to take a position as director of photography at The Springfield News-Leader. An opportunity at The Philadelphia Inquirer is what eventually brought Grigsby to New Jersey. He remained with the Inquirer from 1982 until his retirement in 2012, starting as a staff photographer and later becoming a photo editor and assigning editor. During his time there, he was even nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography. During his photojournalism career, Grigsby also lectured about photography as an adjunct at nearby colleges. Grigsby’s photography has led him to document his travels around the world, from Paris to Guatemala and a host of other locations in between. But the photo he took in May 1968 still remains one of his favorites. More of Grigsby’s work can be seen online at bryangrigsbyphotographer. blogspot.com. Comeau named an Eagle Scout Bordentown Township resident Daniel J. Comeau was promoted to Eagle Scout at a ceremonial dinner Feb. 15. To attain Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank, Comeau earned at least 21 merit badges and completed his Eagle Scout project. He built a patio and two benches at Peter Muschal Elementary School. The project took more than 200 hours of work and $1,300 for materials to complete under his leadership. Comeau was honored at a Court of Honor ceremony and dinner at the Bordentown Senior Center. He was presented with a proclamation from Bordentown Township Mayor James Cann. He received awards of recognition from the Marine Corps League, The Free Masons, U.S. Submarine Veterans, The American Legion, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Bordentown Knights of Columbus. Comeau recognized Scoutmaster John LoBianco Jr. and his grandfather, Richard DiMattia, as his mentors during the Eagle Scout Ceremony. The following organizations helped make Comeau’s project possible with their donations: Home Depot of Hamilton, Abby Rose, Inc., Peter Muschal School PTA, Knights of Columbus, Bordentown Elks, Yardville Supply, Rita’s of Bordentown and Villa Mannino. The scouts and leaders of Troop 13 also helped and supported the project. Comeau is a freshman at Bordentown Regional High School. He joined Bordentown Cub Scout Pack 65 in 2006 and

OCH seeking ‘Hats in Bloom’ The Old City Hall Restoration Project Committee is seeking out hat fashioners, families, local garden clubs, floral crafters, artists, teachers and their students to design and create hats made from flowers and greenery for a “Hats in Bloom” Floral Hat Exhibit and Design Contest on Saturday, May 9. All flowering “Hats in Bloom” will be placed on display for public viewing from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., during the Downtown Bordentown Association’s 19th Annual Franklin Carr Iris Competition. Applicant fees and all proceeds collected during “Hats in Bloom” will benefit the City of Bordentown to continue restorations in the historic landmark building. The OCH Committee is looking for “Hats in Bloom” fashioners to design and create flower-full spring hats. For each hat entered, a $5 entry fee is required along with a completed application. The entry fee for children, ages 6–12, is $2. All hats entered must be fashioned using living flowers and plant materials whenever possible. While silk flowers and artificial elements are acceptable, judges will be looking for living blooms and real greenery. Entries must be delivered to Old City Hall and placed on display by 9:30 a.m. on May 9, along with the entrance fee and completed application. To commemorate the day, one prize award will be chosen for “The Iris Hat Award” for the best Iris Flower decoration

in a hat design. Judging will take place at 2:30, and winners will be announced at an award ceremony at 4 p.m. Nominal monetary prizes will be awarded in the following five categories: Best in Show, Most Original Idea, Overthe-Top Hat, Kids Award, and The IRIS Hat Award. For more information, contact event coordinator Vicki Gaudier at (609) 2030541 or email vgaudier@verizon.net. The Old City Hall Restoration Committee meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Old City Hall, located at 13 Crosswicks St. in Bordentown City.

Jersey Devil BBQ draws inspiration from Garden State By Meagan Douches There’s no doubt that food trucks have been sweeping the nation over the last few years, and Bordentown native Dan Moran has added to the craze by starting his Jersey Devil BBQ truck in Hamilton. Growing up, one of Moran’s favorite pastimes was grilling with his father at backyard family cookouts. Decades later, he and his wife, Mary Dunn, were inspired to start barbecuing seriously after discovering the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party on a trip to New York City in 2009. “The smell of the wood, the smoke, fire and meat [was] intoxicating,” Moran said. Moran started competing in national barbecue competitions five years ago. He fell in love with the barbecue community and culture. For him, the next step was to start a business based on barbecue. He purchased a food truck in August and it was recently completed by East Brunswick’s Vending Trucks in January. It was the company’s first time creating a food truck with a built-in smoker. Jersey Devil BBQ plans to introduce the community to its truck at several

open on the weekends and during the week for catering. Jersey Devil BBQ is a family business with Moran as the pit master, Dunn as

the business expert and their son-inlaw, Rick Austin, as the social media and marketing coordinator. Austin earned his experience working in the corporate sector for seven years. “We all have slightly different talents so it works very well,” Dunn said. “Dan handles the food, we stay away and let him do his thing and that’s how the food turns out so well,” Austin said. Austin said Dunn has a lot of experience starting businesses. Dunn, a graduate of Steinert High School and Mercer County Community College, was the former Director of Nursing at Millhouse where she learned about the legal aspects of running a business. Moran, a veteran safety officer at PSE&G, and Dunn, a nurse at Health Insurance Quality Improvement and Training, continue to work their full-time jobs while managing the food truck. The couple is used to juggling their jobs and their pursuit of barbecue. The family took their hobby to the next level when they began competing at national barbecue competitions in 2010. Through these events, Moran was able to learn many different techniques which he now combines to make his own unique style of barbecue. Moran worked with

were starting to compete, Dan wanted people to know we’re from here without even having to ask. So, we thought Jersey Devil BBQ team, [people would know] we must be from Jersey.” Inspiration from the local area also led to Moran’s signature barbecue sauce. Dunn said they thought of Jersey-centric ingredients when creating their sauce, which led them to include cranberries in it. Born and raised in Bordentown, Moran lived around the corner from the Oceanspray Cranberry factory. He said, if the weather was right, he could walk outside and smell stewing cranberries. “So that is another inspiration for the flavors we choose to have,” Moran said. “New Jersey being the Garden State, cranberries are just the lure.” With their signature sauce, Jersey Devil BBQ offers a variety of smoked meats including ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken and sausage as well as different sides. Moran describes his barbecue as having, “a sweet, savory, smoked hickory flavor.” The crew said that the customer and family favorite is their beef brisket which is slow smoked for over 12 hours. Moran loves to sit back and watch people enjoy it. “At a family function, it just disappears,” he said. Another favorite menu item is the crews’ baked beans which are cooked on the smoker just as long as the ribs and brisket. They’re smoked, and include all of Jersey Devil’s proprietary spices. Moran and his family have been happy to receive lots of excitement and interest from members of the community. “It’s a good feeling that the demand is there,” Dunn said. “It just makes you feel good when people come up to talk to you about your food.” To find out more information and to track the Jersey Devil BBQ truck, go online to jerseydevilbarbeque.com.

various experts featured on the BBQ Pit Masters TV series. Every week he went to a different competition using the experiences as cooking school. He learned how to select, how to prepare, smoking techniques and how to send food to the judges. The competitions allowed Moran and his family to become a part of the national barbecue community. “That’s what the whole organization is,” Moran said. “If you need something or need to know something they’ll help you out. Except the recipes; you just don’t ask for that.” As members of the National Barbecue Association, the couple travels the country to attend barbecue conventions and experience different flavors and styles. “We’ve eaten all over the country,” said Moran. Two years ago, the family went to New Orleans to work for Habitat for Humanity. During their travels, they made sure to sample all of the barbecue they could between here and New Orleans. “Everyone was like ‘Uncle Dan we’re tired of barbecue,’” Moran said. Moran and the rest of the Jersey Devil BBQ crew are now working to bring the barbecue flavors they love to their hometowns. Dunn said they want to bring some of the flavors of their travels back and give people the opportunity to try them. At the same time, they want Jersey Devil BBQ to not just mimic styles of barbecue, but to create a new one that will be synonymous with New Jersey. “New Jersey has no [barbecue] identity like Kansas City, Memphis or Texas,” Moran said. “They all have their own little twist, but there is no identity for barbecue in New Jersey, so that’s what we’re trying to create.” The Jersey Devil BBQ crew is very focused on representing New Jersey, sourcing products locally and giving back to the community. “That’s how we picked our logo, the Jersey Devil,” said Dunn. “When we

Middle school wrestlers take South Jersey titles By Jashvina Shah Bordentown Regional Middle School students Sammy Mazzella and Sean Pedersen have been wrestling for more than half their lives. They both have roots in Bordentown’s youth recreational wrestling program, and this season they put that training to good use, each winning a South Jersey wrestling title. “I hadn’t really thought about being able to do it, but I really just never stopped and would always push myself during practice,” Pedersen said. “Sammy would always push me during practice when we would practice together, and I think that really helped us a lot.” Pedersen started wrestling when he was five years old, and Mazzella when he was four. Having wrestled for roughly eight years and with family members who have played the sport, the pair are legacy wrestlers. “That’s where you’re going to get your success because they get a lot of reps in,” Bordentown coach Chuck Lynch said. “When you start early like that, kids take to it because when you’re five and six years old, it’s more like going out and playing instead of [it] being a sport.”

While being legacy wrestlers gives Mazzella and Pedersen an advantage, the two faced challenges, sometimes physical, throughout the season en route to their championships. “In the finals my shoulder was hurting the entire time and I got a bloody head, but I didn’t let that stop me and I kept going,” Pedersen said. Pedersen was seeded No. 2 in the tournament and defeated the No. 1 seed in a close final match. Mazzella’s win capped an undefeated campaign. “[I had] a bulls-eye on my back because I was undefeated and I was scared of losing,” Mazzella said. He finished the season 15-0. “Sammy is a contemplative wrestler. He tries to go out there with a game plan that involves some of his more favorite moves,” Lynch said.

“At some point in his future he’s going to have to develop other moves because when you get to the next level, if you’re going to be harder to pin, it’s harder to use the same move over and over, so that’s where he has to develop.” Both Mazzella and Pedersen have wrestling influences from Bordentown’s youth recreational program, which Pedersen’s father runs. “I remember not being really good but I knew I had to try as hard as I could and just keep on pushing myself,” Mazella said. Lynch saw Mazella’s talent, but the wrestler struggled in his sixth grade campaign. “I knew that Sammy had talent because he is a legacy wrestler, he’s a kid who’s been wrestling for a while, but in sixth grade he was a little flat. He was the youngest class on the team and

BRMS students Sammy Mazzella and Sean Pedersen both won South Jersey titles this year, with Mazzella finishing the season undefeated.

maybe that had something to do with it,” Lynch said. “But he was definitely more defensive last year, he was more timid last year and this year he had a plan. He went out, he worked hard in practice, and he went out with the idea of pinning his opponent every time.” A problem this season was finding a wrestling partner to challenge Mazzella in practices, but the seventh-grader worked on his wrestling outside of practice. The work led to improvement and a captaincy for Mazella this season. “It was a maturation on his end, being confident, being on the team and [being] put into a leadership position. … He was one of those guys who was working hard so he was a captain,” Lynch said. Like Mazzella, Pedersen was a successful wrestler when he was younger, with a little help from his brothers, Brett and Drew. The success and legacy background pressured Pedersen, who struggled with losing. Quitting crossed his mind, but that idea was quickly squashed. “In the middle of the season I was thinking of just stopping, but Sammy was helping me and everything and everybody on the team and it kept me going,” Pedersen said.

Bordentown Regional Middle School wrestlers Sammy Mazella and Sean Pedersen stand with coach Chuck Lynch. But Lynch saw Pedersen’s confidence and mindset improve this year. “Emotionally, he has all the confidence in the world. He’s not really concerned with whether he wins or loses, he’s concerned about putting his best effort in and learning from each experience,” Lynch said. “That’s a maturity that you really don’t see until later in your wrestling experience. People get so emotionally tied up whether they win or whether they lose that they lose sight that it’s not about today’s match. It’s about how you are preparing and how you are developing for tomorrow’s match. He’s at that level.” Like Mazzella, Pedersen earned a captain position with the team. It marked the second year as a leader for

Pedersen. “He’s a kid who never gives up,” Lynch said. “It can be a tight match, he can be behind but he’s always confident that there’s time enough left to make a difference in the match.” Pedersen’s attitude pushed him through a difficult season. He peaked in time to turn his losses into victories, finishing with a 12-4 record and the championship. “This isn’t like baseball or football where you have to make up points to win,” Lynch said. “In the sport of wrestling, you can be behind by 14 points, turn around, pin your guy and you win. It can all turn around in two seconds. He’s one of those guys that keeps on pushing.”
