Positive development? New owner for Foxmoor Shopping Center gives township optimism By siDDhaRth mUchhaL Finally, a new owner for Foxmoor Shopping Center. Through an online auction on Aug. 1, Penmark Management Company Inc. purchased the center for $7.5 million. The sale becomes official and permanent by September. Penmark has promised to honor all existing leases. Township officials hope, through this change in leadership, Foxmoor Shopping Center has the opportunity to

once again become the small business hub of Robbinsville. From July 30 to August 1, through a private online auction platform, U.S. Bank sold the Foxmoor Shopping Center property to Penmark for $7.5 million, under the appraised value of $13.1 million. The bidding started at $2.5 million, and though the names of bidders were not revealed, the auction itself was quite active. Penmark, the owners of Suburban Square Shopping Center on Scotch Road in Ewing, has a history of improving and revitalizing shopping malls. Penmark purchased the Coventry Mall in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, in April 2016, and increased the occupancy rate from 65 percent to 89 percent

in two years. A Robbinsville Township release noted that foot traffic at Coventry Mall increased with more food vendors and following muchneeded repairs to the complex. Penmark declined to comment on the Foxmoor Shopping Center purchase since the deal was not finalized by press time. But Robbinsville Director of Community Development Hal English and other township officials have high hopes for the new ownership. English emphasized the importance of opening a food store, especially since so many Robbinsville residents now have to go out of town for grocery shopping after Thriftway closed in 2011. “Penmark owns many malls See FOXMOOR, Page 10

Officer Ed Vincent was in fi fth grade when he knew he wanted to be a police officer. Trooper Harris, a state police officer who was stationed at his school, was just about the coolest guy Vincent knew. The state trooper, who Vincent described as a big, strong guy who looked impressive in his uniform, had a lot in common with the fi fth grader. Not only were they both wrestlers, but the trooper shared Vincent’s desire to be kind to others. “Once he talked a little bit about [his] job and what you get to do, it made me think it’d be perfect for me,” Vincent said. “I never cared what race you were or what religion you were, if you

had the coolest shoes or the uglies shoes, if you were rich or poor. I mean it from the bottom of my heart, I cared about everybody and wanted everyone to be nice to everybody.” When Trooper Harris told Vincent that being a police officer meant helping others, Vincent knew that’s exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up. Not only is Vincent now an officer in the Robbinsville Police Department, but he’s helping children learn the same lessons he learned from Trooper Harris as one of the district’s three school resource officers. For the past six years, Vincent was the district’s only school resource officer, working primarily in the high school with regular visits to the middle and elementary schools.

This school year, he’s joined by two other officers — Melyssa Alonso and Det. Kevin Colgan — who will work at Sharon Elementary and Pond Middle School, respectively. After the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the Robbinsville Board of Education added two additional resource officers in a push to increase school safety. The additions ensure there is a fulltime police officer stationed in every school, and the school district and township are splitting the cost. The officers will be responsible for just about everything that falls under the umbrella of school safety. Volunteers at the 2018 Hunger Project event Aug. 4, 2018 packaged 131,328 meals for hungr y children in New Jersey. On Aug. 4, the ONE Project, a faith and community coalition that addresses social needs through education and volunteerism, hosted the 2018 NJ Hunger Project at Robbinsville High School. The ONE Project, working with Feeding Children Everywhere, brought together more than 1,600 community volunteers and packaged 131,328 meals for hungry kids in New Jersey. Volunteers packaged ingredients for a lentil casserole meal created by nutritionists at Feeding Children Everywhere. This meal, which consists of red lentils, rice, dehydrated vegetables and pink Himalayan salt, is nutritious, non-perishable, and only costs 27 cents per meal. The ONE Project team raised the money for the meals through the help of over 50 local businesses and community organizations, and donations from over 170 generous individuals. The meals were donated to Mercer Street Friends Food Bank and other partners and will be distributed throughout New Jersey. These meals will specifically target summer feeding sites and the “Send Hunger Packing” program, which is part of Feeding America’s National BackPack Program. Both of these programs are designed to target low-income children in Mercer County who struggle to afford food when they are out of school. Feeding America’s research project, Map the Meal Gap, shows that almost 270,000 children in New Jersey, or one in every seven children, are food insecure. Led by Aanya Gupta and Ashley Stamboulian, the ONE Project’s Youth Council brought in more than 500 student volunteers in an effort to express

the importance of community service to students. Not only did they bring in a diverse group of volunteers, but they also ran the event logistics and organized the food packing. For more information, go online to facebook.com/oneprojectnj.

AROUND TOWN continued from Page 7 free of charge. The grant awarded to Robbinsville is for fire prevention; the program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and the grants are awarded on a competitive basis. Recent AFG grants to Robbinsville include a $22,740 grant in 2017 to assist the department’s purchase of defibrillators and a CPR device to replace older equipment. In 2016, the department also won a $13,393 federal grant for a cost-saving health and wellness program to support healthier, more physically fit firefighting forces. The department was awarded a $111,585 grant in 2015 to replace 16 sets of self-contained breathing apparatus, used by firefighters for an adequate air supply in dangerous conditions. The aim of the AFG grant program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and EMS organizations across the country. Since 2001, it has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

Troop 79 seeks next batch of Eagle Scouts In recent years, a steady stream of Eagles have taken flight from Boy Scout Troop 79, based in Robbinsville. Just over 2 million boys have reached Eagle in 100 years. Currently, around 4 of every 100 boys that joins Scouts make Eagle—that’s less than 1 percent of the male population. Though getting there may seem a daunting task, Troop 79 seems to have established a reliable road map. Driving around Robbinsville, most people are not aware of the many improvements that have been accomplished through the efforts of Troop 79. Some recent Eagle projects completed by the troop include: Restoration of the Little Red School House (May 2013, Dustin Roberts), collection of donations and funding for a forward operating military unit in Afghanistan (June 2013, Dylan Roberts), restoration of grave stones in the Allentown Presbyterian Church cemetery (May 2014, Kevin Kurzeja), creation of a trail in Washington Park woods (May 2014, Adam Duvin), restoration of the basement of the Little Red School House (May 2014, Laim McMurttry), restoration of the trail markers on the Tomm May Trail (August 2014, Austin Duvin), renovation of the bleachers at Tantum Park (May 2015, Casey Jones), building and installation of bat houses at the Robbins House (June 2016, Cole Montplasair), installation of benches on the walking trail at Community Park (June 2016, Jared Hughes), building and installation of a picnic area in Community Park (August 2016, Sean Carr), and restoration and construction of a usable outdoor classroom at Eagle Pond on the grounds of Pond Road Middle School (Oct. 2017, Matthew Began, the original Eagle project of Jason Pilla in 2008). Troop 79 has produced 13 Eagle

scouts in the past five years and another 26 Eagle Scouts in prior years. Our most recent Eagle Scout, Phillip Sapienza, guided the scouts on an effort to collect and donate over 4,200 books to Code ReAd for school children in Trenton. In addition to providing community service, Troop 79 also does activities, such as camping trips, white water rafting, hiking, canoeing, fishing and biking. There is no prerequisite for joining the Boy Scouts. Once a boy turns 11, he can join his local Boy Scout troop. For more information, contact Troop79BSA@yahoo.com. Meetings are held every Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Robbins House.

Police ask residents to register security cameras Robbinsville Township police are asking residents and business owners to register their privately owned surveillance systems with department’s C.A.P.T.U.R.E. program. As police officers respond to criminal incidents in the township, they may be able to use footage gathered from the exterior security cameras to assist in apprehension and prosecution. Police say the new C.A.P.T.U.R.E. program will help officers quickly identify nearby cameras that may have captured criminal activity. After registering a camera, police said residents will only be contacted by the department if there is a criminal incident in the vicinity of their security camera system. The officers, if necessary, may request to view camera footage in order to assist in an investigation. There is no fee required to register a camera system. The C.A.P.T.U.R.E. program is not an active surveillance program, and the police will not have direct access to any of the registered private camera systems. Police also said the registration information will be housed in a secure network and all information will be kept confidential. Residents and business owners can ask to remove their camera from the system at any time. Police cannot provide active surveillance of private property, and it is not to be construed as a promise or obligation to provide any additional level of safety or security to private property. For more information about the program, visit robbinsville-twp.org.

FOXMOOR continued from Page 1 and shopping centers, and they have connections and contracts with many kids of retail and food establishments, so they seem quite confident they can bring a food store to Foxmoor,” he said. Penmark has already begun to hold meetings and work closely with the township to create plans to redevelop the plaza. Because Foxmoor is a designated area in need of redevelopment, this allows Penmark and the township to engage in creative zoning and bring in tenants that are generally not allowed, such as a microbrewery. Furthermore, along with renovating the facade and landscaping of the shopping center, the township will work with Penmark to request the state Department of Transportation for a right-in right-out lane from the shopping center to Route 33, which would provide easier access to the mall. Through revitalizing Foxmoor Shopping Center, English believes Robbinsville can take another step towards supporting the community of small businesses. Foxmoor Shopping Center, built in 1986, has faced tough times in the past decade, leading to a 41 percent vacancy rate and declining sales for the business that chose to stay. Before 2015,

the center was owned by Pettinaro Management LLC from Delaware, whom English described as “absent.” Once the land went into bankruptcy, Pettinaro sold the property to the U.S. Bank National Association for $100, with the bank assuming the $13.1 million in debt. Since then, U.S. Bank hired property manager Colliers International for minimal maintenance. However, English said Colliers did not focus on improving or even properly maintaining the 19-acre property, leading to potholes in the parking lot and general disarray. “Colliers was tasked with simple maintenance,” English said. “If there was a leak in the roof, (Colliers) would plug the leak, not get a new roof.” Colliers was also tasked with leasing, but faced difficulty because every lease and lineitem had to be approved by the bankruptcy court, further complicating the process of negotiating a lease. Combining the difficulty of negotiating leases with the declining appeal of the center, many tenants began to leave the complex, including Thriftway Market, Rite-Aid, Everson’s Karate and several restaurants. And while there was tenant interest, the lease process made it difficult to replace leaving businesses.

‘They seem quite confident they can bring a food store to Foxmoor.’ –Hal English, township economic development director

The former Thriftway location at Foxmoor Shopping Center, shown here in December 2015, has been vacant for most of the decade. Township officials said they have hope a supermarket will come to Foxmoor now that Penmark has purchased the plaza. (File photo by Suzette J. Lucas.) “We have actually had interest in the shopping center, but several tenants have wanted to come in and couldn’t,” English said. “They couldn’t get a lease negotiated because it was between the bank, the leasing company, and the bankruptcy court.” Since English entered his current role a year and a half ago, he learned quickly that revitalizing Foxmoor has been a top concern for township officials. “When I came on board, the mayor and council told me that [Foxmoor Shopping Center] was their No. 1 concern,” English said. “So I went to work on it, and got the bank to meet with us. At the meeting, the mayor and council were not shy in telling the bank how upset we were about the shopping center.” The mayor and council expressed their frustrations through the threat of condemnation, which was a possibility since the Robbinsville Planning Board designated Foxmoor Shopping Center as an area in need of redevelopment in August 2016. “They basically told the bank that either they sell it, fix it up, and lease it, or we we will condemn it and then take it,” English said. “That’s when the bank decided to cut their losses and put it out

to auction.” With the auction complete and a new permanent owner in place, the township now can broaden its top-level priority beyond Foxmoor Shopping Center. Along with revitalizing Foxmoor, the current Master Plan renewal process has the township considering keeping commercial development towards Route 130 and perhaps even courting a new retirement home to Robbinsville.

La Piazza Ristorante

Fine Italian dining with small-town hospitality For those of us that have lived in the Mercer/Monmouth County area, one of the long held traditions of summer is taking a family trip to the Jersey Shore. And for many, getting there often involves driving through the historic town of Allentown, a community nestled near several major highways, including the NJ Turnpike, Route 195 and Route 130. It was one such trip to the shore that gave birth to a treasured landmark in Allentown: La Piazza Ristorante, located in the heart of Allentown at 11 Church St. You see Jerry LoPresti, current owner and proprietor of La Piazza, and his family would often go to vacation in Long Beach Island. On one of those trips, in 1998, his father Nino, owner of Mannino’s Italian restaurant and Pennington Pizza, noticed a forsale sign on the abandoned Hope Fire Company firehouse at 11 Church St. while sitting in shore traffic. Intrigued by the location and its potential, Nino began exploring the possibility of buying the property and establishing a restaurant there, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the ensuing 20 years, La Piazza Ristorante has become a mainstay for Allentown residents, people in the surrounding communities, and for those who are fortunate enough to visit or travel through or near Allentown. Combining fine Italian cuisine with small town hospitality, Jerry and his staff at La Piazza Ristorante have built a reputation of caring and committed service to their customers and to the community. That commitment can be seen in La Piazza Ristorante’s involvement and support of a myriad of local organizations, groups and civic institutions, including Allentown Schools and their students. Jerry and the entire La Piazza family have led efforts that help to support student activities and the athletic teams associated with the schools, be it through sponsorship, fundraising efforts or in providing a venue and/or food for events and celebrations. These efforts have helped to create a unique bond between La Piazza and those that they serve. But if you want to understand what La Piazza represents to the people who have come to know it,

one need only look at customers who aren’t even from the U.S., let alone Allentown. Unbeknownst to Jerry, a family from Canada that travels to North Carolina each year discovered La Piazza on one of their trips down the NJ Turnpike and ever since, have made stopping at La Piazza an annual tradition. Recently, their journey happened to coincide with La Piazza closing so Jerry and his staff could take their summer vacations. Disappointed in missing their annual visit to La Piazza, the family sent Jerry a message asking if La Piazza would be open on their return, which it was. Sure enough, the family was able to continue its tradition on its way back north. Given La Piazza’s success, and the connection it’s made with people far and wide, it’s not surprising that Jerry sees the future being more of the same. Maintaining a tradition of sharing great food, superior hospitality and good will with La Piazza’s current, and future customers, a tradition born in a traffic jam on the way to the Jersey Shore.

Classico setting new standard for tomato pie USA Today says year-old pizzeria makes best in the state By Joe Emanski

jemanski@communitynews.org

Fans of Trenton-style tomato pies will always argue about which one is best. Some say it’s DeLorenzo’s Tomato Pies in Robbinsville, while others favor Papa’s, also in Robbinsville, or Palermo’s in Bordentown. (DeLorenzo’s Pizza in Hamilton has plenty of supporters, but most would say they make pizza, not tomato pie, where the mozzarella cheese is on the bottom and the chunky crushed tomatoes are on top.) USA Today recently decided to weigh in on the matter through its affiliate website, 10Best (10best.com). And while they did include those three local favorites on their list of the top 10 tomato pies in New Jersey, none of them managed to earn the top spot. The 10Best editors bestowed that honor upon Classico Tomato Pies, a one-year-old pizzeria in West Windsor. The website’s editors identified two main varieties of tomato pie: Trenton style, and Philadelphia bakery style,

in which a focaccia-like crust is topped with chunky tomato and little or no cheese. They came up with a single top10 list including both styles. Restaurants on the list beyond the local pizzerias include Krispy Pizza of Old Bridge, Maruca’s Tomato Pies in Seaside Heights, Cacia’s Bakery in four South Jersey locations, Holy Tomato Pies in Blackwood, DeLucia’s in Raritan and Razza in Jersey City. Classico opened last August behind the CVS at the intersection of Southfield Road and Princeton Hightstown Road. The now award-winning restaurant is a dream come true for owners Linda and James Pittari and Steve Cabrera. DeLorenzo’s and Papa’s, of course, have their roots in Trenton, having moved out to the suburbs in recent years. Classico has city roots as well, through pizzaiolo Cabrera, who grew up in South Trenton. The Notre Dame High School grad learned how to make pies at two local pizzerias: Vincent’s in Hamilton, and another which he asks me not to name, but which is regionally known and has also left Trenton for the suburbs in recent years. It was in the time he was making pizzas at the latter restaurant, both in

James Pittari, Steve Cabrera and Linda Pittari stand in the dining room of their eater y, Classico Tomato Pies. Trenton and Hamilton, that he got to know Linda and her son, James, who were frequent customers. Whenever

they visited, they would request to have their pie made by Cabrera. “You could tell the difference if someone else made the pie,” Linda says. “The crust, the taste—his pies stand out.” The Pittaris and Cabrera became friendly, and would talk about someday opening a restaurant together as partners. Linda’s grandfather, Antonio Cirella, had owned a restaurant called Arcadia on 13th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan, but neither she nor James had any experience running a restaurant. She had been an executive with Merrill Lynch, and he was a parish administrator at All Saints Church in Brooklyn. Cabrera left the pizzeria in December 2016, after which the trio took the plunge and started looking for a place to call home. They settled on the location where Il Forno Cafe and Trattoria had recently closed. They designed Classico to be simple, open and airy, with red brick walls and rows of wooden tables. Cabrera has worked at a number of other restaurants as well, including Oliver A Bistro in Bordentown, and says he tried to take the best from every place he’s worked and make it work at Classico. He says he liked working with the pizza ovens at Vincent’s a little more than that

other place, because they were larger. He had brand new ones similar to those installed at Classico and started working on recipes for his dough and his sauce. “I wanted to get it just right because whatever we came up with was what we were going to use forever,” he says. “People want consistency, they don’t want pizza that changes all the time.” People tell him his pies remind them of the ones he used to make at the other place, but he says both the dough and the sauce recipes are his originals. Because the crust is so thin, he says, it’s essential that the dough of each pie is uniform. The goal is to get it so the pie is cooked evenly from center to edge, so there’s no bend in the slices. It is a different art from making other kinds of pizza; Cabrera has worked with staff who have had to relearn the craft despite years of experience as pizzamakers. Linda says Cabrera’s standards are high. “If it doesn’t come out perfect, he will throw it away and start over,” she says. Classico has had basically the same pies on its menu from the beginning. With a significant vegetarian population in the area, they have added a number of vegetable toppings to the menu since opening. Plain tomato pies are popular, but Linda says the margherita pie, topped simply with fresh basil, fresh mozzarella and tomato sauce, is their best seller. A large plain tomato pie is $16; a Sicilian pie is $18, and specialty pies like the margherita or the meat lovers are $23 for a large. Unlike that well known restaurant that Cabrera left behind,

Classico also serves a variety of classic Italian dishes, like pasta with vodka sauce ($11.99) and eggplant parmigiana with pasta ($12.99), that use Linda’s grandfather’s recipes. They also serve the kinds of sandwiches and salads one would expect to find in an Italian restaurant in the area. On weekends, they have a chef come in who adds seasonal specials to the menu. For dessert, options include Junior’s cheesecake and ice cream from Arctic and Thomas Sweet. Business was decent at the start, the owners say, picking up once they started delivery service this year, and then again in April after a positive review appeared in the Trenton Times. They’ve also had some success with catering, occasionally closing the restaurant to host a special event for a customer. Linda says that the community has been very supportive of Classico, with many customers having become friends over the past year. As if to illustrate her point, a customer comes into the restaurant during our interview with a tray of cookies and hugs for all three partners. “This was always Steve’s dream,” Linda says. “And James and I, we just always wanted to do a business of our own. We never had a question about it working because we knew the product was so good.” Classico Tomato Pies, 358 Princeton Hightstown Road, West Windsor. Phone: (609) 750-1234. Renner had an auspicious start in soccer. “I was actually three years old, on a co-ed team,” the Robbinsville High senior said. “I remember one practice, we were doing this thing we had to pass through the coach’s legs, and I kicked the ball right off her butt. That’s one of my biggest memories. I was just laughing. She was just smiling, but she was probably mad at me a little bit.” Fortunately, everyone’s butts have been spared since then, but Renner is still someone to be worried about on the field, especially by the opposition. A four-year varsity performer, Renner takes versatility to a new level. In fact, is there anything she can’t do? “Not that I have figured out,” coach Kaitlyn Curran said. “She’s kind of like a band-aid. You put her somewhere, and she will figure out how to fix it.” When asked what she thought of being termed a medicine cabinet item, Renner chuckled.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I guess that’s very nice of her. I think it’s kind of accurate. Whatever I have to do, I’ll do it.” Let us count the ways she does it. “She’s just that very reliable, go-to kid,” Curran said. “She’s aggressive out of the air; her height (5-foot-9-1/2) helps her. She’s also fluid when playing balls on the ground. As a sophomore, she was at midfield, last year she was at center back. This year I’m not quite sure where she’s going to land but I know where ever she does end up she’ll be the best at it. She hasn’t played up front yet, but it’s always a possibility.” After further contemplation, Curran came up with more Renner abilities. “She did such a great job last year in the back because she is a great leader and can see the field and give directions as she is seeing it,” the coach continued. “She’s also good at 50-50 balls and distributing balls makes her a good midfielder. She also has a hard shot. Last year she scored a goal on a restart 37 yards out. I know she can finish; so up top is always a possibility. If not, I know she can put the ball on frame 20 yards out from the goal. She is definitely somebody I’m very lucky to have.” Her abilities aren’t limited to the pitch. Renner actually played lacrosse up through her junior year, but stepped away to focus her attention fully on soccer. Outside the athletic arena, Renner has a 3.6 grade point average and is on the yearbook committee. She is undecided on college for now, and says she will continue to play soccer only if it’s the right fit. Her No. 1 choice is the University of Delaware, and she is thinking of a career in journalism or something else in the writing field. “She’s such a good kid,” Curran said. “She’s great in the classroom, she’s just that all-around, very well rounded student. She comes from a great family.” After her butt-bashing debut

where, she can drop it on the dime.” Her powerful leg also makes her valuable on re-starts. “When I was younger, I would take most of the free kicks,” she said. “I think I’ve always had a big foot. On corner kicks, you have to place it between 18 and the six, so that’s what I try to do.” During her first two seasons, Renner’s big foot wasn’t accompanied by a big mouth. That’s something Curran has seen evolve as well. “Her freshman and sophomore year, she was more quiet on the field,” the coach said. “Last year, I told her, ‘I’m gonna need you to step up and gonna need you to be vocal.’ She did that, she found her voice, and she continued that this year, too.” Robbinsville is coming off an 8-8-1 season in which it reached the second round of the Central Jersey Group II tournament. Renner feels things can improve this year with Curran having a year’s experience under her belt. “I think she’s a very good coach and very passionate about the game we play,” Renner said. “She’s obviously on the sidelines, but I feel she’s always on the field with us. She’s really good.” Sounds like a mutual admiration society between player and coach. “In addition to having Macie as an athlete, having her on the roster as a human being is really nice,“ Curran said. So is having her as an inanimate object at times. “She does,” Curran said, “make a good band-aid when you need something fixed.”

in Robbinsville recreation soccer, Renner went on to play soccer for the Robbinsville Rush, the GAK and the Mercer FC before ending up with the Player Development Academy in Westhampton. While she has been moved around on the field with the Ravens, her main position was in the back for club soccer. “I love defense, that’s my favorite spot on the field,” Curran said. “I feel like the back four, we all have the same brain, if that makes sense. We all have to move up together and shift our shape and stuff like that. And I just like to protect the goal.” Upon saying that, she quickly added, “(Curran’s) been playing me at centermid in practices, and I don’t really care where I am, as long as I’m on the field with my teammates.” As Curran mentioned, Renner is dangerous offensively in the air or on the ground. “You have to be aggressive on headers,” Renner said. “You can’t be scared of it, if you are, you’re going to get hurt and you’re not going to do well around the ball. I’m not the best jumper but I think my height helps me out, and my aggressiveness.” Renner would be an outstanding weapon in the box for her team’s corner kicks. The only problem is, she is the one delivering them. “Her corners are phenomenal,” Curran said. “If we could have gotten on the end of her corners and finished them, she probably would have had 45 or 50 assists. Her corners are right on point. If you ask her to drop one in some-

Creative Fotiou ready to make senior year magic By Rich Fisher As George Fotiou takes the field on Sept. 6 for the Robbinsville High boys soccer opener against visiting Nottingham, he will do so with a new gratitude towards the surface he is playing on. And the footwear he is wearing. Fotiou, who is proud of his Greek heritage, visited the land of his ancestors this summer and saw such sights as the Acropolis and the Santorini Islands. He also managed to partake in some pick-up soccer games while roaming the country. “Everybody’s playing barefoot there,” Fotiou said. “It’s pretty fun, we’d just be walking to lunch or something, I’d see some kids playing in the street, and I’d hop in with them.” Asked if he took his shoes off, he said, “Of course, you gotta fit in with them.” So, what was it like? “Different,” he said. “It’s a little painful, especially with the rocks on the street and stuff. You come home, and we’ve got these nice big turf fields here. You can appreciate it more.” And Ravens coach Jeff Fisher can certainly appreciate that Fotiou is one of his guys playing on that field. “George will go down as easily one of the better players to ever come through Robbinsville,” Fisher said. “He’s been, if not our most creative, one of our most creative players the last three years. He can finish the spectacular outside the

box, he also has a tremendous amount of pace to him that he can get in behind defenses and finish. He equally dishes out assists and scores goals.” Statistics bear that out. Entering his senior year, Fotiou has 18 goals and 17 assists, getting a near equal amount each season. As a freshman, he collected five goals and three assists, as a sophomore he had seven and seven and last year, despite being forced to play in the back much of the year, he had six and seven. Fotiou admits he enjoys scoring, but his talent can sometimes betray him in that he is also a strong defender; meaning he will be moved by his coach when the situation warrants. “He’s kind of played pretty much all over the place in the midfield and up top; and last year he was a first-team all-conference midfielder,” Fisher said. “But we had to pull him back and play him in more of a defensive midfielder role last year, which we didn’t want to do. It kind of took away from his attacking ability because we needed him to play further back. His numbers weren’t as good as they could have been playing up top or playing as an attacking mid. He could have easily been double digits if we were able to do that. This year we’re hoping to play him in more of an attacking role.” Fotiou is happy to return to that role, but accepted last year’s duties without question. “I had to adjust a little, because I like scoring goals,” he said. “But I had to do

Senior George Fotiou juggles the ball during Robbinsville High boys’ soccer practice Aug. 17, 2018. (Photo by Suzette J. Lucas.) it. I had to do what my team needed. Fish needed me there, so I had to do what had to be done.” Growing up in Hamilton, Fotiou played in the township’s recreation

leagues before his family moved to Robbinsville when he was 10. Fotiou’s first travel team was the Hibernian Celtics Juniors, and he moved on to the high-level Match Fit club at age 13. Coming off the varsity bench as a freshman, he still “pretty much played starter minutes,” according to Fisher. He was named a team captain last year and retains that title this season. “I’m looking to be a better leader this year,” Fotiou said. “I want to keep the team organized, keep everybody together, get us all moving as one. I feel we didn’t have that last year.” Fisher feels Fotiou does that just by the way he goes about things. “Sometimes his work ethic at practice is the way to lead,” the coach said. “It’s not always vocal, but about going out and being the hardest worker every day. Those other guys see that.” It was a frustrating preseason for Fotiou, who suffered a hamstring pull playing travel ball at the end of May. He was in the process of cautiously working his way back during August workouts, and Fisher assured he would be ready to go when the season started. That’s not surprising, considering Fotiou’s passion. “He’s one guy that loves the game,” Fisher said. “If it’s in practice, if it’s a scrimmage, if it’s a real game, he gives you the same energy. He gives you 110 percent all the time. He really loves the

game and he plays with that mentality.” And what is it he loves? “Just the competitiveness,” Fotiou said. “It’s the individual aspect, but also the team aspect. Both of them have their pros. That’s what makes it so fun.” One thing that was not fun was the way Robbinsville ended its 2017 season. The Ravens dropped an anguishing shootout loss to Trenton in the first-round of the Mercer County Tournament, and fell 3-0 to Monmouth in the Central Jersey Group III tournament to finish 5-11-3. “That all left a sour taste in my mouth,” Fotiou said. “Plus I’m coming off this injury so between all of that it really makes me want to get out there on the field and work hard.” After playing center-midfield, forward, wing and outside back throughout his career, Fotiou is expected to be back at center mid this year in order to take advantage of his various talents. “He’s not the tallest player (5-8),” Fisher said. “But he’s strong, he’s quick, he’s feisty. He’ll run through tackles. He makes up for not being the tallest player by being strong, quick and fast.” Much of the offense will center around Fotiou this season, although Fisher hopes the continued development of junior Robbie Lotito and senior Matt Hevey will relieve his scoring burden. “We’ve got some good experience on the field that can hopefully take some of the pressure off of George so he’s not the only one creating or scoring goals,” Fisher said. Fotiou is hoping to play college soccer, and Fisher feels he can definitely

do so. For now, he is worried about the Ravens soccer team, his classroom studies and getting a part-time job at a new pizza restaurant in Hamilton that also serves gyros. As a member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Hamilton, he makes the gyros at their annual Greek Festival in May. Asked who taught him that skill, Fotiou laughed. “I just started picking it up,” he said. “It was in my blood to make gyros, and I just started doing it one day. I already put in an application for the pizza place, but I haven’t heard back yet.” If he gets the job, Fotiou is well aware that the best thing about this Greek tradition is you don’t have to do it in your bare feet.

FROM THE SCHOOLS

Is September the most wonderful time of the year? ChWITH INTEREST there is an abundant supply of oxygen available to us if only we take time to breathe. Yet research shows that most people do not inhale and exhale deeply enough throughout the course of the day. Many busy, overstressed individuals take short shallow breaths from the chest instead of the diaphragm which creates an imbalance in the proper amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Breathing does not merely supply oxygen to the brain and body it also controls many complex behaviors. When we breathe in, RANTEwe A E stimulate areas in U our brain that control our mental functioning and emotions. Mindful *** breathing quiets overstimulated APYour mind, allowing us to let go of negativity and O boosting level. A R O ourY Eenergy N EOur patience is continually Patience. tested and may be in short supply as we race from one obligation to the next. As we live in this digitally obsessed world, we may forget how to wait for even the simplest of things. However we recognize that patience matters and that patient people are happier and healthier. Gratitude. When our world spins out of control and our days seem fraught with incessant demands and challenges, it often helps to take some time to be thankful. During the moments when we forget to breathe and our patience wears thin, remembering that our children are happy and healthy and that our lives and our work are meaningful help us to take stock of what is really important. Practicing gratitude helps to open our

minds and our hearts to the fullness and the beauty of each moment. Love. One of the most essential lessons for children of all ages is learning that love is a verb. In his research on love, social scientist John Gottman discovered that lasting relationships have two things in common…kindness and generosity. When our children learn to practice kindness and generosity, we teach them the key to forming healthy and lasting relationships. Likewise, when we remember to treat others with kindness and generosity, we set the stage for happier interactions and a happier life. When we remember that our most essential supplies—oxygen, patience, gratitude and love—are accessible to each of us in any given moment, the start of a new school year can absolutely become the most wonderful time of the year. Kathie Foster is superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

As we embrace the last few weeks of August, we begin to shift from our leisurely paced summer mode to the more regimented schedule of another school year. For parents, this means creating a plan for each day of the week and taking a look at the school supply list. At this time of year, I always enjoy watching the clever Staples commercial that illustrates the contrasting viewpoints between how parents and children look at the approaching school year. In the ad, the kids can be seen moping reluctantly around the store while dad joyfully skips and dances through aisles. As the scene unfolds Andy Williams sings, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” But is the start of school the most wonderful time of the year? For many students and their families, the start of school signals an accelerated and often frantic pace with a whirlwind of activities. It seems that each year students and parents feel increased pressures from a variety external sources. College bound students, for example, are expected to maintain a certain grade average, score well on the SAT and ACT and demonstrate a well-rounded life in order to be competitive with their peers. Athletes begin intense practice schedules in order to compete at the highest levels. Thespians often spend up to seven days a week rehearsing for the fall drama. And students involved in clubs and outside pursuits attempt to balance the demands of both curricular and extra-curricular activities. We also know that most students and their parents worry about things like homework, making the team, getting the part, passing the driver’s test, and balancing busy social calendars with

academic demands. Adolescents also feel the social pressures of “fitting in” and making new friends. Even our youngest learners sometimes feel a sense of stress as wellmeaning parents get caught in the trap of assessing their shoe tying readiness, whether or not they can write their name correctly or their ability to read aloud. Cases of school phobia and anxiety in Robbinsville and across the nation have risen dramatically across all grade levels. At the start of a new school year, students worry about whether they will be able to open their lockers, where they will sit in the lunchroom, who will play with them at recess, and on and on. The popularity of—and constant access to— social media can lead many students to feel that they do not measure up to the picture perfect online profiles of their classmates. And where schools used to feel safe, many students and parents have internalized the stress and fear that has become all too prevalent in a world in which school shootings have become commonplace. And so, over the course of the next few weeks, as families prepare for the year ahead purchasing new sneakers and new clothes, catching up on summer homework, and stocking up on school supplies, we offer a gentle reminder to say that we all actually carry our most essential supplies with us. Oxygen. We take for granted that
