Town ready to ‘Go Bald for Gabe’ Community rallies around family after second cancer diagnosis; fundraiser set for Dec. 7 By sAMAnthA sciArrottA Any Bordentown resident would be hard-pressed to spot a part of town that hasn’t been touched by the Planas-Borgstrom family. The kids go to school in the district and are involved with athletics and theater. Mom Tara grew up in town

and moved back after going to college in Connecticut, and she’s also taught in the district for about 20 years—“I’m really, really Bordentown,” she said. Dad Francisco was a teacher at the high school. So when Francisco, Sr. was diagnosed Hodgkin’s lymphoma 14 years ago—while Tara was seven months pregnant with Gabriel, their middle child—the community was quick to come together and raise money for the family through a benefit concert. And then it happened again. At the beginning of September, Gabriel was also diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. And

once again, the community stepped in to support the family. Holy Cross Lutheran Church will host an open mic fundrasier for Planas-Borgstrom Dec. 7 from 7 to 10 p.m. The Bordentown Township Police Department also set aside its clean-shaven policy for No Shave November, growing beards to raise money for the family. For a donation, participating officers could grow a beard, mustache, or goatee, or pain their fingernails any color. They also sought donations from community members throughout the month. Bordentown City has plenty of places to shop and eat, but a limited amount of downtown parking can deter people from visiting. City officials are hoping a new shuttle service will help alleviate some of these downtown parking woes. The city is offering a free shuttle service for visitors who want to shop, eat or stroll through the downtown area, according to a statement posted on the city’s website. The shuttle will pick up passengers at the Carslake Community Center/Gilder Field Park area of town — where they can park their cars for free — and take them downtown. Shuttle stops include: Intersection of Crosswicks Street and Farnsworth Avenue Farnsworth Avenue and Railroad Avenue Second Street and East Church Street The shuttle will run approximately every 15 to 20 minutes on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m. Additional dates and times may be added during the upcoming holiday season as well as during special events. —Laura Pollack

On Halloween, instead of asking for candy, Bordentown Regional High School theater students went door to door collecting food donations for those in need. This year, the BRHS International Thespian Society Troupe 6803 collected 3,200 pounds of canned and dry goods for St. Mary’s Food Pantry through their 2018 Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat Food Drive. Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat is a national community service program for ITS member schools to collect canned and dry goods for local charities and food banks. Thespian troupes from across the country are participated in the program this year, and thousands of pounds of food were collected across the state. In eight years of participation in the program, Troupe 6803 has collected over 25,000 pounds of donations. In 2010, the generous donations of the Bordentown community helped Troupe 6803 to surpass its original goal of 1,000 pounds and ultimately donate 2,002 pounds of food. For this, Bordentown Regional High School ITS Troupe #6803 was awarded the 2010 Harvest Excellence Award by ITS. The Bordentown Regional High School Theatre Club and Stage Crew are part

Township to revamp recreational facilities

Bordentown Township intends to make upgrades to implement new fields and amenities for youth soccer, softball, baseball and field hockey organizations in the coming year. The township recently acquired the Dix Drive-In property on Route 206. It also received $250,000 in funding through a Burlington County Open Space grant. Township officials met with representatives from several local youth sports organizations regarding the upgrades needed to the parks and recreational facilities. “The township committee and I are excited about these new improvements and the support we receive from our volunteer youth sports programs,” said Mayor Stephen Benowitz. “We have made a concerted effort to let all of the

The building of the fields will be phased, and the township hopes two or three new fields will be playable by the end of 2019. “Specifically, we are happy to begin the process of bringing youth soccer back into the township,” Benowitz said. “With over 600 registered kids in the league, at all ages, this represents a big part of our

An outdoor space created by Terra Verde Design, a Bordentown-based firm owned by resident Tim Mellor. MELLOR continued from Page 1 software programs. Mellor didn’t pick that up. “When I went to Mercer County Community College for horticulture, they hadn’t really gotten into it yet,” he said. “I had been in the advertising design program before that and they were just starting using Macs. Kids were coming in for summer camp and were using the same programs I was paying for in class.” Before a project begins, Mellor likes to know the lifestyle and the personality of his client. He’d really like to work on a property and do small jobs here and there before coming up with bigger ideas because he then gets to see how a client uses their property. “I want customers to hire me because they want me to figure it out,” he said. “We do things a lot slower because we’re a small company. Things just come out better. Some of these big companies bang out a design, then send 50 guys over and they bang it out. But they miss all the little things they could tweak if they had a designer who was there the whole time.” After Ewing High School and college, Mellor lived alone in the Chambersburg neighborhood in Trenton. He eventually was recommended to a place on Farnsworth Avenue. He recalls almost crying walking in there. It had pumpkin hardwood floors. It was super cheap. There was a second and third floor, even a third floor deck. He started Terra Verde Design here and has been a Bordentown resident ever since. Mellor met his now wife, Jennifer, in town. She was born in Texas but moved to New Jersey at age 13. They were married in 2008 and have a nine-year-old son, Liam. “I’ve been on my own in business

since 2002. It took a while for things to start moving,” Mellor said. “In 2005 I knew the economy was on its way out because all the people I worked for were money conscious and would stop jobs right in the middle because they knew they’d never get their money back out of the project. Things plateaued and this was before everybody else caught on to it.” Recessions hit entrepreneurs differently. There’s the economy, specific seasonal business challenges and life’s ups and downs. Despite how the marketplace changes, a business owner has to surf those sometimes steep waves. “When the economy completely dropped off I’d already nailed this really big customer in Princeton that kept me busy for three years,” he said. “I still had some other clients and it was going well. Then the economy started to affect them too, the stock market crashed in 2011, and that was the worst time. I used to do ever ything for ever ybody, then it was just, ‘Okay, we’re only going to hire you for the brain stuff…the design and the installation.’ But the maintenance stuff, the mulching…nothing. They’d only pay the scabbers and the side job guys for that stuff.” Mellor went from five to seven laborers in one year to only three guys, then down to two guys. Then it was no guys. He worked by himself for a year and a half. He lost his core group of workers because there wasn’t enough work. Ever y year there’s another shortage and across all trades. Mellor has been through half of dozen laborers this year because they don’t always work out. Then Jennifer was diagnosed with cancer. She’s fought it and has been feeling a lot better since this sum-

mer, with the help of Mellor’s mom, a retired ETS administrator who now lives near Bernardsville. She’d come down for two or three days a week when her grandson Liam was born. Jennifer even started back to work recently. She’s a contract counselor at McGuire Air Force Base working mostly with children. Despite things in the landscape business being tight, Mellor does his share of community work. He was introduced to the staff handling the Clara Barton playground revival. Mellor donated time, materials and playground plantings and worked with an environmental

group to put in a gazebo and landscaping at the Northern Community Park a few years ago, as well. “I do mostly residential stuff, but during the last couple years I’ve been trying to get more maintenance stuff,” Mellor said. He’s recently scored a contract with Mastoris Diner to do their winter snow removal, some immediate landscaping work, and landscape maintenance. “We want the maintenance stuff for steady work. But I want the creative projects too. We’re a one stop shop.” Mellor believes that landscapers are pretty lucky overall, even during an unsteady economy, regarding getting permits and cooperation from a township. In Princeton or some other specific townships that are cracking down it may be harder. They want a permit for everything, but Mellor says that most contractors get irritated at the landscapers because they can just schedule a job and go do it, not get caught in a “hurry up and wait” bureaucratic process. “When you get into these more high end jobs where you’re doing more construction—maybe a gas line installation or adding electricity—you’re in the same boat as other contractors. Some townships are better than others and get to you faster,” Mellor said. Smooth dealings with townships notwithstanding, the juggling Mellor and his brother Michael need to do in the landscape business is not for anyone without passion and persistence. It balances out, though. Terra Verde got the contract to do the Ward Avenue soccer fields in Bordentown. “We’d like to just be out bidding on and designing jobs,” he said. “It’s usually a referral for me — from another customer — how I get jobs. Sometimes it’s a phone call, then a meeting where I can walk through the property. Either way my brain just starts going. From the minute I see your property I’m already thinking about it. On my way home I’m thinking about it. In the shower I’m thinking about it.”

GABE continued from Page 1 minate with a group shave-off Nov. 27 at Jimmy’s American Grill. The restaurant said 10 percent of the total profits from that night would be donated to the Planas-Borgstrom family. The family has also benefited from lemonade stand fundraisers, Jean Days in the schools, Go Bald for Gabe shirts and a steady stream of visitors. “This time has been a completely different experience, and I don’t know if it’s just because Gabe’s active in a lot of things in the community and sports and things,” Tara said. “It was just really overwhelming. We can’t figure out enough ways to say ‘thank you’ or show appreciation.” Gabe came down with pneumonia at the end of August and went to a walk-in clinic for treatment. Technicians took an x-ray to make sure that everything was cleared out when he went for a follow-up visit, and that’s when they noticed the mass in his chest. Initially, doctors thought there was something wrong with his heart because the x-ray was difficult to read, so they made an appointment with a cardiologist. Before that happened, though, Gabe’s doctor called and said they thought it could be an effusion—fluid in his chest. Then, Aug. 31, doctors recommended that Gabe be brought to the emergency room at Princeton Medical Center, where doctors thought the mass could be lymphoma. From there he was transported by ambulance to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. After four or five days of testing, Gabe started chemotherapy on Sept. 4. He finally came home four days later. Gabe’s next round of chemo will start at the beginning of December, followed by daily radiation treatments. The constant trips to Philadelphia, medical treatments with intense side-effects, losing hair—that would be a strain on anybody, let alone a freshman in high school. But Gabe has taken it in stride, helped in part by his dry, sardonic sense of humor “I just thought, ‘Holy crap, there’s a mass in my chest. That’s new. Freeloader,’” he said. Staying active has kept Gabe’s spirits high. He is still playing soccer (though he’s been instructed to avoid the ball), and he and his older brother train in parkour at The Movement Lab in Hainesport. He spends time with his friends and girlfiend, Naomi, when he can. They were shocked and upset when Gabe broke the news, but Tara said they handled it pretty well, especially for a group of teenagers. “One of them said they were expecting me to say something worse, so I’m wondering how long he thought I had to live,” Gabe said. “What’s worse than this? Incurable cancer? There’s a list of, like, five things that could be worse than, ‘Hey, your best friend has cancer.’” Almost immediately after, parents called and texted Tara and Francisco and were quick to visit at CHOP. He also says his teachers have played a massive role in making ever ything easier. Gabe, who is enrolled in a number of honors classes, said anytime he gets behind on schoolwork, his teachers are flex-

Gabriel Planas-Borgstrom (right), a Bordentown resident undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, visited an Eagles practice with other CHOP pediatric cancer patients. He and his mom, Tara (left), toured the practice facility, posed with the Lombardi Trophy and met players like quarterback Carson Wentz (center). ible and allow him to turn in assignments when he can. “That’s a really nice feeling, to see that and to know how understanding they are,” Tara said. “They do help him out a lot. He’s really amazing and he’s very tough and he gets through his day, but I feel better when he’s at school because I know if something does happen, he’s safe and he’s supported.” Once his new, tougher round of chemo starts, Gabe will be homeschooled. He wanted some sort of routine to help him get up and out of bed during the days he’ll be homebound, he said. He’ll have to be admitted to the hospital while the treatment administered because the medicine will be tougher on his immune system, so recovery will take longer than he’s become used to. “He might feel a little worse than he’s feeling now,” Tara said. “We say ‘a little’ because we’re very optimistic. He could feel a lot worse, but we’re choosing to say ‘a little.’” “Don’t worry, if it’s not the medicine, it’ll be the existential dread,” Gabe said. “It could’ve been a lot worse. They could’ve told me, ‘No, this isn’t treatable, you’ve got six months to live.” Tara laughed, and then agreed with the sentiment. “We’ve been down this road before, so I kind of know what to expect,” she said. “My husband’s been 14 years cured, so it gives you the perspective.” Francisco, Sr. said his recovery was “as quick as can be.” He was cancer-free within six months of his first chemotherapy treatment. “The grace that he has handled this

whole thing with, I have no words,” said Francisco, Sr. “It makes you proud as a father, but I had nothing to do with that. That kid was sent down from us from God. Nobody wants to see their child go through anything like this, but he is a phenomenal kid.” He had similar words for Tara. “That woman is the strongest person I know,” Francisco said. “Our family has gone through a lot of things, and you can see where Gabe gets it from. That side of the gene pool definitely came from her. She is so inspiring. The strength that she has far outweighs what you see when you see this woman of 110 pounds. That’s why I fell in love with her. To see her emotional strength and the grace that she shows handling not just this but every single thing, it’s phenomenal. She has been the glue that has held this family together.” The father-son duo is close. Francisco doesn’t have to pull any punches with Gabe. His son is “wise beyond his years,” Francisco said, so the two share a lot with each other. But Gabe doesn’t want sympathy, even from his parents. He doesn’t want them to share his pain. “We’re going through the same thing, and he’s really helped me on that front, but it’s obviously really different, too,” Gabe said of his father. “I’m a lot younger than he was when he got diagnosed. He had different struggles. He had to get out of bed to go to work in the morning. It was probably harder on his front because he couldn’t keep calling out of work.”

A fundraiser will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Bordentown Dec. 7 in honor of 14-year-old resident Gabriel Planas-Borgstrom, above, who is undergoing treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. But Francisco, Tara, and his siblings Francisco, 15, and Maya, 10, don’t hesitate to let him know that they will be there with him every step of the way, rubbing his back when he’s sick or bringing him a glass of lemonade when

he’s thirsty. “Now that it’s happening to my son, it’s a whole different ballgame,” he said. “Even though you know he’s going to be OK because the technology is so advanced—it was so great when I was

diagnosed, but it’s advanced so many steps forward because of the money, hours and passion that people put behind it—it’s painful to watch because you know he’s going through the same types of things. At first, it was a lot of ‘How’s this going to go?’ and it was good to be able to have that first-hand knowledge. He and I have always had an extremely open relationship.” The whole family has been a great support system, Gabe said, and they’re all looking for ward to the open mic night. Francisco hopes Gabe—who played the title role in last year’s middle school production of Aladdin and had a lead role in Fame as a seventh grader—will feel well enough to sing. It’s up in the air since it will be right after his second round of chemo wraps up. The support of the community and the opportunity to thank teachers, students and friends, though, will be a highlight, too. “It’s a bad thing,” Tara said. “It’s a lot. It stinks. But we’re really lucky to be where we are. If we have to go through it, at least we’re with people who are here to help us go through it.” Those interested in performing at the open mic fundraiser should send an email to Katie Gens at katiegens@gmail.com to sign up. The evening will also feature a silent auction for themed baskets, as well as refreshments and “Go Bald for Gabe” gear available for purchase. Barbers from the Bordentown Barbershop will be on-hand to shave heads in support of Planas-Borgstrom. All proceeds and donations will go to the Planas-Borgstrom family.

Let’s beat cancer together.

The holiday season has officially begun, and now there’s a new studio in Bordentown to create your own seasonal decorations. Lamb’s Corks and Boards, a paint and sip studio, held its grand opening in September. On Farnsworth Avenue, this studio will sit among established Bordentown shops and restaurants. “We love a lot of the restaurants down there, and we like to support all of the local businesses,” said Gabrielle Lamb, owner of Lamb’s Corks and Boards along with her husband, Charles Lamb. This family business allows Bordentown residents to take a night on the town, spend an afternoon with friends, or purchase custom-made wood signs. Guests are welcome to bring their own wine while Lamb’s Corks and Boards hosts parties and classes for interested participants to dabble into creating art on wood canvases. “We’re Bordentown residents and we love to go out on the town when we have the opportunity to do so, not often, because we have two little girls,” Gabrielle said. After a trip to a similar studio, the Lambs decided that a paint-and-wine business would be a great fit for Bordentown. “One night we were planning a date night out and found somewhere that did something similar, with the wooden signs, and we had a lot of fun doing it and we thought it would be a great addition to Farnsworth,” Gabrielle said. Once the Lambs realized the potential for a paint and sip studio, they focused on making their idea come to life. “It’s always scary to enter into a new venture, to invest the time and everything that it takes to get a new business off the

Lamb’s Cork and Boards is one of the newest businesses on Farnsworth Avenue. ground,” Gabrielle said. “We just felt like this would be something really good for our family and for our community. As we started talking to our friends, we saw such a need.” The paint and sip studio is another nightlife option other than going out to restaurants and other stores. “We were hoping that people would enjoy coming in, making signs, and visiting the town, to make some girls night outs or some date nights,” she said. Charles will host classes for painting on the wood canvases. This studio offers private parties, which can include birthday parties for kids, fundraisers, and

Lamb’s Cork and Boards, opened by Gabrielle and Charles Lamb on Farnsworth Avenue in September, has a number of holiday-themed creations for guests to work with. more. They plan to host these parties during the afternoons. “If a group of girls want to come in, they can decorate a unicorn sign with their name,” Gabrielle said. The Lambs also plan to offer paint nights. A paint night will likely fall on a Saturday night with 24 seats in the studio available. Individuals, pairs, groups of friends are welcome to book seats to relax, get creative, and drink some of their own wine. Individuals looking to work on a project have the ability to do so at Lamb Corks and Boards, and groups can come in and have a fun night with friends. “We’ll also be doing a lot of seasonal items,” she said. “The holiday season, all present occasions where handcrafted wood signs would add to the decor with a personal touch. Other crafts made can focus on couples and love. Not only for Valentine’s Day, but personal dates and couples names can be added to a wood sign to honor an anniversary or a wedding date.” For any season or occasion, Bordentown residents now have a chance to display some creativity, make a decoration, and make memories. One unique aspect about Lamb’s Corks and Boards is that instead of standard artist canvases, is that this studio uses wood canvases instead. According to Gabrielle, “wood canvases are also more substantial than the standard canvases.” Right now, the featured classes and artwork encompass the holiday spirit. All occasions where handcrafted or hand-painted wooden signs would add to the decor with a personal touch. Classes can be booked on their website, along with the different items they can choose and customize. In addition to providing classes or parties to create personal masterpieces, Charles will also feature and sell his own works. “This is his baby,” Gabrielle said. “He’s always been in the construction industry and having been a carpenter, I think that’s the dynamic of it.” They will not only be selling wooden signs that Mr. Lamb has made, but wine

racks, cork boards, door-wide organizers, too. “It’s going to be all his handmade wooden goods that he’ll be selling in the store when he’s not hosting the party,” she said. Chuck’s artwork will be featured alongside his grandfather’s, who does his own wood carvings, who helped contribute a lot of his tools to Lamb’s Corks and Boards. There will be a corner of the store reserved for his grandfather’s work, called Grandpa’s Corner, that will feature his hand carvings, too. Gabrielle was excited about the shop’s grand opening, and is looking forward to showcasing the wooden signs. “I feel like the time is just flying and we’re trying to get everything ready just to feature all of the various pieces that we’ll be selling,” she said. The couple’s two children, daughters Charlotte, 8, and Genevieve, 5, were looking forward to the shop’s opening, too. “They’re excited about the family business, too,” Gabrielle said, “and it doesn’t hurt that there’s an ice cream shop two doors down, either.” Both girls are looking forward to being involved with the store, and having the opportunity to bring friends to the shop for paint parties. “It’s been a good experience for the family,” she said. As for feedback from friends and members of the community, the Lambs have been happy with the responses they’ve received. “We’ve been getting great feedback from the community,” Gabrielle said. They already had a few parties booked a couple of weeks before opening in September. “I want people to have a fun night out where they can make a memorable piece that is something they’ll feel proud to hang in their homes.” According to Gabrielle, she is no artist, but she is happy to have the opportunity to create a piece she can be happy with. “I like this because I am able to create something that I love and that’s special to our family,” she said. “It helps you to have these memories always present and right there to share with your friends and family.”

New Specialists Join Capital Health’s Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center

With a reputation for providing advanced care to patients with complex, neurological conditions affecting the brain and spine, Capital Institute for Neurosciences recently welcomed two new advanced specialists, Drs. Vernard Fennell and Varun Naragum, to the Institute’s Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center team. They join neurosurgeon Dr. Michael F. Stiefel in providing some of the latest techniques to care for stroke patients. DR. VERNARD FENNELL is a dual fellowship trained neurosurgeon specializing in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery, with additional expertise in microsurgery, skull base surgery, brain and spine tumors, spine trauma and reconstruction as well as epilepsy surgery. In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Fennell has a strong background in research, including early contributions to the design of the new EMBOTRAP II Revascularization Device, a next generation stent-retriever that safely removes blood clots from arteries in the brain that are causing a stroke. “I’m thrilled to be part of an organization that is so passionate about innovation,” said Dr. Fennell, who soon after joining Capital Health became the first dual-trained neurosurgeon in New Jersey (and among the first in the country) to use the new FDA-approved EMBOTRAP II Revascularization Device.

Dr. Fennell was also involved in some of the initial research on the device’s design. DR. VARUN NARAGUM, an interventional neurologist and neurohospitalist, is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology and was fellowship trained in neurology, vascular neurology, and endovascular surgical neuroradiology. He uses minimally invasive neuroendovascular techniques to treat conditions like aneurysms, stroke, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), atherosclerosis, brain tumors, and head and neck tumors. Neuroendovascular procedures access the brain using a small incision in the groin and a catheter that is threaded to the part of the brain being affected by vascular disease. “Each case is unique, but those patients who are appropriate candidates for neuroendovascular procedures experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, and less risk of complications,” said Dr. Naragum. “Being able to offer advanced treatment like this demonstrates Capital Health’s commitment to being a leader in all aspects of neuroscience and stroke care.”

Minimally Invasive Screening Options, Accurate Results Led by DR. JASON ROGART, director of Interventional Gastroenterology & Therapeutic Endoscopy, Capital Health’s Pancreas Screening Program aims to identify early precancerous lesions before they turn into cancer. While screening the general population for pancreatic cancer is not recommended, there are high risk groups who should consider screening. “In addition to family history concerns, adults older than age 45 are at greater risk, as are those who are overweight or have diabetes,” said Dr. Rogart. “Men and African Americans are also diagnosed more frequently, and controllable risk factors like smoking and heavy alcohol use can increase the risk very significantly.” Providers at Capital Health have specialized training, including subspecialty fellowships, in the field of pancreatic cancer and can recommend a plan and tests based on an individual’s personal risk factors and a comprehensive medical history review. Options May Include: … Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): EUS is the most accurate test for identifying and diagnosing pancreatic cancer and pre-cancerous cysts. During the procedure, a sample of suspicious tissue or a cyst may be obtained as an alternative to exploratory surgery or other invasive testing. … Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) … Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Helping CHRONIC WOUNDS Heal Faster For those with diabetes or poor circulation, an injury or wound to the legs and feet can be slow to heal. For almost 30 years, residents in Mercer and adjacent counties have relied on Capital Health’s certified wound care team of physicians and nurses to provide comprehensive health care for patients with chronic wounds and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for those with qualifying conditions. “Wound care is unique in that there is no official specialization like other fields of medicine. Treating complex wounds takes a multidisciplinary approach to cover all facets of diagnosis and treatment, and at Capital Health, each patient benefits from our collaborative expertise to receive personalized evaluation and treatment based on the latest best practices,” said DR. DANIEL LEE, director of the Vascular Laboratory and former director of the Center for Wound Management at Capital Health. Using the team approach, each patient’s needs are assessed and a plan of care is implemented and shared with each

patient’s referring physician. Treatment options can include wound debridement, growth factor application, lymphedema compression therapy, wound coverage with skin substitutes, skin grafts and flaps, endovascular revascularization procedures, as well as hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments.

blood to carry more oxygen to a wound site or injured tissue and speed up the healing process,” said DR. MANISH GUGNANI, former director of the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at Capital Health.

As the first established wound care program in Mercer and Bucks counties, Capital Health was also one of the first programs in the region to introduce hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a well-established additional treatment to help those with diabetic wounds or ulcers heal faster.

Capital Health’s Center for Wound Management & Hyperbaric Medicine, located at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, treats all wounds that have not shown signs of healing, including: … Acute burns … Arterial and venous ulcers

Diabetes can cause nerve disease or neuropathy that causes a loss of sensation in the feet and legs, causing severe wounds to go unnoticed for long periods of time. The delay in recognition of a wound can make very treatable wounds more complex and exposed to infection. “HBOT provides more oxygen-rich blood to complex wounds, which helps increase the rate of healing for complex wounds and decrease the chance of infection. It involves breathing 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which enables the

Scotties boys’ soccer finishes the season strong By Rich Fisher As the Bordentown High boys’ soccer season opened with games against Pitman, Rancocas Valley, Pennsauken and Pemberton, Sean Peterson reluctantly stood on the sidelines with a hip injury. The senior would go on to be one of four Scotties to make first-team on the Burlington County All-Patriot Division team, which showed his value. And yet, rather than fold, Bordentown won its first four without Peterson en route to a 12-1 start. “It just showed how deep our team was,” Peterson said. “I knew I would miss a couple games, I missed more than I wanted to. Seeing how they responded, it kind of motivated me more, like ‘Man I really want to get out on the field and be with these guys.’” At the rate Bordentown was going, he needed to get back before he lost his job. But Peterson was thrilled at how his mates played without him, especially in the 2-1 win over Rancocas Valley. “I think the win against RV got us all motivated,” Peterson said. “We were like ‘Wow, we’re actually a team that can make this happen.’ and then it sparked everything. The whole season in general

was basically a highlight reel. I think my favorite win was probably the RV game, that was the first time we beat them in around seven or eight years. I think if we lost that game the season would have went extremely different, but we won and everything started to go our way.”

Bordentown finished 15-3-4, won its second straight Patriot Division title under second-year coach Jason Zablow and earned the No. 1 seed in the Central Jersey Group II tournament. Zablow could only find stats dating back to 2004 but noted that the Scotties allowed the

least amount of goals (16) and had the second most shutouts (nine) since that time. The season finale was tough to take, as Manasquan took a 1-0 win on a goal with one minute remaining in the first overtime in the CJ II semifinals (The Squan fell to Delran in the finals). “It was back and forth, whoever had the wind had the better of the play,” Zablow said. “Stratos (Gromitsaris) made some big saves for us, and their keeper made a couple ridiculous saves for them. With five minutes left we took five shots in a 10-second span, and either him or a defender cleared all five off the goal line.” Gromitsaris, a junior, made one last great save that went over the goal line, and Manasquan scored on the ensuing corner kick. “It’s unfortunate, we were one minute from switching sides and maybe one shot from getting to the sectional title, but Manasquan’s a good team, they deserved it that day,” Zablow said. “It was obviously upsetting to lose but it wasn’t like we walked off the field saying ‘Wow we were way better and lost.’ It was an evenly played game. It’s never easy to take that loss but it shows that we

belonged on that stage where you’re one of the final four teams in your section.” Which was something the Scotties came to realize several days after the game ended. “Obviously it was a tough loss and nothing I or anyone else would say to them would make it a happy time,” Zablow said. “But we kind of re-visited some things we did as a team this year. I told the guys there was nothing to hang their heads on. It was definitely a successful season.” Peterson agreed whole-heartedly with his coach. “I’m actually happy with what happened,” the defender said. “Going into this I think we had nine seniors that had graduated, so we knew we had to work much harder this year. I think we surprised a lot of people with how well we did. We had a couple shutouts at the start which helped our confidence. We knew, some of the reports said we weren’t favored, that kind of lit something under us. We had to prove them wrong, just like we did the whole season.” What made the grind even tougher is that Peterson was not the Scotties’ only injury problem. Senior AJ Viteritto, a starting defender, suffered an ankle sprain in week three and could only play 10 minutes per game when he returned. Senior Brandon Jones received a concussion and broken nose in the second week and his role was also limited upon return. But the Scotties would not die. Bordentown was ranked No. 11 in South Jersey and were invited to play in the South

Jersey Coaches Tournament for just the fourth time. Senior midfielder Kevin Cryan (14 goals, 5 assists) was outstanding as he earned Patriot Division Midfielder of the Year honors and was named All-South Jersey. Cryan, Peterson, and juniors Theo Lannom (8 goals, 1 assist) and Cam Schroeder (4 goals, 1 assist) were first-team All-Patriot Division, while Gromitsaris, Reichert (4 goals, 6 assists) and sophomore defenders Aiden Amankwah and Shane Ritter (1 goal, 6 assists) were named second team. Ritter started at outside midfield last year but was able to move to the back and give Zablow some flexibility. Also stepping up was Tony Moncreiffe, who had five goals and four assists as a spot starter; first-year defender Colton Huntanar, and freshmen Aiden Hoenisch and Tanner Hilbert. They all helped fill the gaps caused by injury. “As coaches we never let the guys get down,” Zablow said. “Yeah somebody got hurt, but it’s next guy up, we’re gonna keep chugging forward and when we get them back we’ll be even better. They kind of understood that. No excuses. We preached competition from day one, whoever steps in we’re expecting to win, we don’t have a weakness, we’re deep enough. We had a good year because of it.” In essence, the injuries provided a silver lining for the 2019. “We’ll have underclassmen returning who have played; that’s a good sign,” Zablow said. “We had two freshmen and three sophomores starting

against Manasquan because of injuries. It showed we had young guys able to play at that level, so going forward, getting that experience now will help us out. Hopefully some of the younger guys who got experience are able to step up into bigger roles or starting roles next year.” The coach is also hoping that winning breeds further winning. “Now we’re kind of setting that tradition going forward,” he said. “Now the expectation is where you make it that far in states, and even further.”

Boys’ cross country squad focusing ong the future

n i k c he

C WITH INTEREST took the top three spots. “Cinnaminson won the past five years and they have one of the best kids in the state,” Wheeler said. “To beat them felt pretty good. And we finished 10th in the whole county going against some Group IV schools. The Cherokees, the Lenapes, the Moorestowns have three times the enrollment we do. I would like to get a little better next year, obviously win the Patriot Division again and maybe get better in the sectionals where we can qualify for the states.” Machanpalli knew that if everyone ran their best, the division title could be within their grasp. “In the beginning of the season, we looked at the times of last year from the guys coming back, and we also had NTE sophosome pretty ARA fast E moresU who weren’t on cross country but were on the track team, so we *** felt we had a pretty APYgood shot,” he said. “It was O close, but luckily really R EA E YThat we won against a we pulledOitNout. good team makes me very happy.” The ceiling for Machanpalli, who is at the top of the sophomore class academically, is extremely high, as he never ran before high school. He showed up last year thinking cross country was a halfmile race, having no notion of a 5K. “He came out and was like ‘What is this?’ and he still did very well,” Wheeler said. “He had a good summer and it will be nice to have him the next couple of years.” Machanpalli put in a ton of training last summer, “from 35 to 50 miles per week,” and dropped his best time from 18:40 to 17:39, which he ran while finishing fourth in the Patriot meet. Sophomore Tyler Gentry was the number two runner in just his first year

of cross country. Gentry was fifth in the division race in 17:58. “He did spring track last year and really enjoyed it,” Wheeler said. “It took a little convincing to get him to come out for cross country and did well. He works on Mondays and Tuesdays and had to do a lot of workouts on his own which is very hard. He was able to do it.” The third 10th-grader is number-three runner Nick Eiffert, who was eighth in the Patriot race (18:16). He is another first-year runner after doing soccer last year. “He was anywhere from number one to number three and ended up third at the end of the season,” Wheeler said. “Out of everyone, I think he actually loves cross country, something I could see him doing when he’s in college.” The four-five runners helped make Bordentown one of the true feel-good stories in cross country this fall. Junior Greg Poole is a special needs student now in his third year of running, while Renzo Almeida has autism and is in his first year of doing cross country after trying spring track last year. Poole was ninth in the Patriot race (18:27.61) while Almeida was 13th (18:42). “They’ve been doing well, and have been big assets to the team,” Wheeler said. “The other guys take them under their wings, but they’re just part of the team, they’re athletes. It’s not a feel-sorryfor-them type of thing. There’s nothing different about them in our eyes other than we needed them in order to win.” “We all welcome each other,” Machanpalli. “We hang out with them outside of cross country, too. They try their best. We all just try our best.” And the best could be yet * to come.

This may well be the year that the Bordentown High School boys cross country program came of age. A season that began with an all-time turnout of over 40 runners, was highlighted at New Egypt High School in late October when the Scotties won the first Burlington County Patriot Division championship in school history. And despite the fact that Bordentown did not have its best race in the Central Jersey Group II sectionals, the good news is that the team’s top three runners are sophomores and its top five runners are underclassmen. “It was really good,” said sophomore Rishi Machanpalli, the Scotties No. 1 runner. “It was the first time we ever won the Patriot Division so that was pretty exciting. Even more exciting is our team’s pretty young, we’re all returning so we might win it three years in a row if we keep working.” The Scotties also hope to improve on their sectional showing, as they finished in 15th place in the November race. “We did pretty bad this year, hopefully we improve,” Machanpalli said. “A

lot of it was inexperience and conditions. Hopefully we work hard this summer and do better.” Brian Wheeler, who completed his first full year as head coach after taking over during last season, was a stand-up guy when it came to discussing the sectionals. Asked if it was a learning experience for his young team, he said “It was much more a learning experience for me.” “I got them to peak for the Patriot Meet, and I thought that would last a little longer,” Wheeler said. “A lot of it falls more on my shoulders than theirs. Next year I’ll know what to do to help us last a little longer.” The good news is, peaking for the Patriot Meet worked to perfection as Bordentown jammed four finishers in the top 10 and had all seven runners in the top 20 to edge Cinnaminson by three points. As Wheeler pointed out, even though only the top five finishers count in the team score, Bordentown’s sixth and seventh runners—seniors Andrew Gaudreult and Ethan AmanKwah—finished ahead of Cinnaminson’s fifth runner to make the Pirates final score higher. That was extremely important after Cinnaminson
