Regiment finishes 2nd in U.S. Robbinsville High band wins first state championship in its history By eRin kameL Robbinsville High School’s marching band was used to being overshadowed by other clubs and sports. Not a lot of people even knew they competed, but that all changed in October. The Raven Regiment took first place at this year’s state championship, winning over the crowd at Rowan University with their performance entitled “Connections.” It is the band’s first state championship. A tough-fought campaign for three seats on the Robbinsville Board of Education ended Nov. 6 with a sweep. The slate of Shaina Ciaccio, Vito Galluccio and Lisa Temple all won election to 3-year terms on the school board, with their running mate Craig Heilman joining them after claiming an 1-year unexpired term. Galluccio led all candidates with 23.5 percent of the vote, followed with Ciaccio at 22.7 and Temple at 22.4. The win-

ners beat out a challenge from Vincent Costanza—a former member of the board himself— and Noushin Kanani Asadpour. Galluccio, Heilman and Temple all serve on the school board currently. Ciaccio will rejoin the board after serving from 2012 until 2017.

The Robbinsville Advance asked the winners Nov. 7 to provide a statement on the results of the election, what they hope to achieve in their term and how they expect to move beyond a heated campaign and onto school business. Their See SCHOOLS, Page 10

Shaina Ciaccio, Vito Galluccio, Craig Heilman and Lisa Temple all won election to the Robbinsville Board of Education. SCHOOLS continued from Page 1 responses follow:

Shaina Ciaccio

“For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.” -Luke 12:48 This verse has been echoing in my head all night. I feel the sheer weight of these words tonight. There is a great responsibility that you the community have entrusted to us, which is nothing more precious than the future of our children. It cannot be taken lightly nor taken for granted. Not ever. I know there has been a divide in this town. And we have become weary of a relentless campaign season that seemed at times never ending. But tonight, we start something new. A new chapter. We turn the page and begin

again. I have full faith that while we may have different paths on how to get there, we all want the same thing: for our children to thrive and help be the change in an uncertain world. I have always believed teamwork, unity, truth and love ultimately always win. And I have great hope for our board, our schools and our future. Much responsibility has been given to us, but now, more is required than it ever has been. We need to work hard to restore the credibility and trust that people have lost regarding our board. And that begins tonight. God bless all of you.

Vito Galluccio

I was glad to see our Column J slate prevail because I believe it is the right team to move our schools forward. Under board president Rich Young’s leadership, we’ve accomplished many positive things over

the past year, and I want the momentum to continue. Many folks were surprised that I received the most votes for the 3-year seat because I had the lowest name recognition going into this race. What that tells me is that my message of property tax fairness and higher ethical standards resonated with voters. This past year, our board showed that we can make our economy stronger by bringing our tax rate down modestly in line with the other high performing school districts while at the same time investing more in the students than ever before. I plan to continue advocating for that strategy of tax fairness and smarter spending by allocating more resources to the classroom. I also think there is more we can do to improve our ethics so that the community feels we are operating transparently and in their best interest.

Our residents and students deserve a well functioning board that collaborates and sets a strong example for our students. We don’t always have to agree but we do need to behave like professionals and treat each other with respect. I believe strongly in our board. It is made up of competent and caring leaders. Although we all have strong personalities, we must put differences aside, pull up our sleeves and work together to make our great schools even better. I am fully committed to doing just that.

Craig Heilman I am thrilled with the results. Robbinsville had five excellent candidates to choose from, but to get all three of my friends on our slate was something that we worked very hard to achieve. Our slate showed Robbinsville that even

though we don’t agree on everything, what is important is that we know that we can work together in a respectful way. The four of us will represent almost half of the board, and we can be the leaders to bring everyone together and focus on what is important. Next year on the board, I want to work on creating a budget that will add more spending to the classroom, yet give a much needed tax relief to the tax payers. The big factor is the state funding, and assuming they keep their promise of continuing to make it a more level playing field for Robbinsville, we will be able to accomplish this. We also need to continue to focus on security and the safety of our children and staff. Plus, we need to continue to keep the focus on ethics, and making sure that the district represents our district in the best way we can. And, as always, I will work hard to bring the school board to the people to keep them informed and make sure that they know they are being heard.

Lisa Temple I am thrilled with the outcome of this year’s election, humbled by the support of the community and excited to continue to serve our district and students. Over the next three years, my focus will remain on ensuring all students receive the education they deserve regardless of their ability. Schools are not only a place for academic growth, they are a place for nurturing and developing the “whole child.” Preparing students to face the real world is a priority of mine. Discussions around school safety need to extend beyond our physical security features. It is imperative to include identifying mental health concerns. We must create a culture of inclusion and empowerment to speak up when something isn’t right. Finally, I believe in a balanced approach to budgeting. This includes not only addressing the needs of the district and students, but considering the taxpayers. I am excited at what the next three years can bring for our district.

Brinda Suresh, Samantha DeMartino and Dylan Shah march with the Raven Regiment during an October 2018 football game at Robbinsville High School. (File photo by Suzette J. Lucas.) BAND continued from Page 1 endurance. They ran, they danced, and they practiced drill techniques. But the students wanted to work even harder, rehearse more. So they would manage sectionals amongst themselves and practice individually. It paid off. “To see them finally be rewarded for their hard work was a good feeling,” said Birch Wilson, band director and music teacher. “Seeing the looks on the kids’ faces was an honor.” Wilson uses music as a catalyst to teach his students about life lessons and leadership skills. He enjoys passing down the motivational messages his mentors instilled in him. He’s happy to be able to provide a place for the students to express themselves and be part of something greater than them. “He gives us pep talks all the time about maintaining focus to get something done,” said Johnathan Todd, the band’s drum major. Wilson’s students are paying attention and the long practices are helping to shape them for the future. Take Dimatulac, who’s typically a shy person. Leading the color guard helped her find her voice

and taught her about the responsibility of being a positive role model to others. The marching band members are well aware of the value of their hard work and commitment. But they felt an extra boost of confidence when their school recognized them. Todd loved hanging their state banner in the common area of the high school. Dimatulac enjoyed hearing their win broadcasted over the loudspeaker during morning announcements. “All the days rehearsing under the sun, for hours on end, finally paid off,” Dimatulac said. Returning members will know a championship is possible now that they’ve tasted that sweet victory. They’ll once again practice on those hot summer days, run their laps and practice their drill routine. They’ll rehearse for hours under the scorching sun until every beat is on point and every member is in line. They’ll be joined by new members, who will soon learn what they’ve gotten themselves into: the chance to form a tight bond with their peers and make memories to last a lifetime—and maybe, take home another trophy.

FOOD & DINING

Celebrate this holiday season with a coquito (or two) By Joe Emanski

jemanski@communitynews.org

Alejandro de Casenave has fond memories of Christmas in Puerto Rico. The executive chef of Witherspoon Grill lived there until he was 11, when he moved to Lawrence with his family. “In Puerto Rico, we celebrated Christmas poolside, and beachside,” he says. “Moving here was a little daunting at first, seeing snow and being cold. I was used to wearing shorts and swimming.” Each year for Christmas his family would prepare lechón, or a whole roast suckling pig, in the backyard. It takes hours to cook, and while it was on the fire they prepared rice and beans and other side dishes. De Casenave and his family may live in New Jersey now, but that hasn’t prevented them from maintaining their holiday tradition. The chef and his family still get together every Christmas Eve for lechón with all the fixings. Another Christmas tradition in Puerto Rico is the coquito, a drink that literally translates as “little coconut” and which is sometimes called Puerto Rican eggnog. There are variations found throughout the Caribbean and Latin America that feature some combination of evaporated

milk, condensed milk, coconut cream, egg yolks, spices and rum. De Casenave remembers his mother, Mercedes, making coquitos every year — with a twist. “My mom being a creative type, switched the rum to brandy, that being the Cuban part for us, and she would add chocolate syrup to it,” de Casenave says. His mother would make the coquitos, bottle them, and give them to people as gifts. For kids, she made a virgin version. That coquito tradition lives on today. Only now, de Casenave’s mother makes enough so that he can give it away to his friends and co-workers as well. “It’s a little piece of home I get to share with friends on a cold day,” de Casenave says. De Casenave’s mother is protective of her coquito recipe, and didn’t want to give it to us. So I asked Hamiltonian Maria Morales, an administrative advertising assistant with Community News and someone with Puerto Rican heritage, for her family’s recipe, and she was happy to oblige. I’m not sure how many people that recipe serves, so let’s just say: it’s enough! *** As a first-generation Italian American, Linda Prospero has embraced family holiday tradition her whole life. For many Italian Americans, Christmas Eve

Prospero, now 68, grew up in Ambler, Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia’s northern suburbs. Her mother was from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, her father from Calabria. “When I was growing up my parents always had a huge Christmas Eve Feast,” she says. “I don’t even remember that they called it the Seven Fishes. It was just a plethora of dishes on our table,” she says. There was always pasta with squid or crabs, and lots of fried fish, including smelt and baccala, also known as salt

cod. Each year her parents would go to Philadelphia’s 9th Street Italian Market, which is still there today, to buy their seafood. Today Prospero is an accomplished home cook and, since 2008, the blogger behind the website Ciao Chow Linda. Over the past decade she has made hundreds of recipes to share on her site (ciaochowlinda.com) and on Instagram, often with entertaining reminiscences or snippets of the history behind the things she makes. Around this time of year, her posts often have a holiday angle to them. Just about any recipe she has ever made for Christmastime, including desserts, can be found on the blog. As a child, Prospero knew the Feast of the Seven Fishes as a participant — but not as a cook. Over the years she gained confidence in the kitchen, and after the death of her mother and mother-in-law, she took over responsibility for planning and preparing the dinner. She also made it more her own, reducing the amount of fried fish dishes in favor of dishes like octopus salad or seafood risotto. In 2008, posting the recipe for her mother-in-law’s stuffed squid, which today is always a feature of her Christmas Eve dinners, she wrote about how it had been passed down to her by

“where do you want to go out to eat tonight?”

her mother-in-law, and how after the death of her mother and mother-in-law some years before, the responsibility for hosting the feast had fallen to her. And she in turn has been preparing the next generation to take the mantle. Son Michael, for instance, is the one who makes the stuffed squid these days. Prospero expects about 15 at her house for the feast this year. The menu will be similar to the one she had in 2016, which was as follows: Prosecco; cold shrimp with cocktail sauce; oysters with mignonette sauce; fried smelts; fried squid in tomato sauce; baccala mantecato; homemade fettucine with shrimp, scallops, squid and clams; stuffed squid in tomato sauce; crab cakes; fennel salad; plus a buche de noel (a.k.a. yule log), cookies and moscato for dessert. Prospero says this year she might shorten the menu a little and leave out the crab cakes. These days, Prospero posts about one recipe per week to the blog, less than she used to, although she is much more prolific on Instragram, where she is also known as ciaochowlinda. “Instagram is quicker,” she says. “You don’t have be writing a whole long piece, you just post photos. I enjoy following other Instagrammers who post about food too. It’s fun.” To find Linda Prospero’s stuffed squid recipe, go to ciaochowlinda.com and search for stuffed squid. *** Dorothy Mullen says you can say that her holiday food tradition is not to have a holiday food tradition.

Stuffed squid, the featured menu item for blogger Linda Prospero’s annual Feast of the Seven Fishes. The founder and board president of Princeton’s Suppers Programs is known as an advocate for people who want to improve their health by changing the way they cook and eat. Through her programs she and her facilitators work with people to understand the way they eat and the way that eating makes them feel — and how changing eating habits can affects health issues like diabetes, anxiety, cognitive loss and mood swings (possibly in ways different from what they have heard or come to believe). Mullen says personally, she looks to cook, eat and share the holiday foods

that don’t lead to a need for New Year’s resolutions. “Our traditions at suppers are all around enjoying the holidays to the fullest extent possible without going into the old drinking and eating habits that created your health problems to begin with,” she says. Pressed, she says if there is one thing she serves to holiday guests every year, it is roasted brussel sprouts. “Roast them at high heat with kosher salt, and when they caramelize, they sweeten,” she says. Suppers has hundreds of recipes to help people get through the season. Like a “Christmas in a bowl” wild rice

salad with pomegranate, or roasted vegetable soup with butternut squash, apples and, if you’d like, roasted chicken (vegans can opt for roasted cauliflower instead). Learning to listen to one’s body and to make meaningful changes to one’s eating habits is a difficult enough task any day of the year. But Mullen knows that the challenge becomes that much greater during the holidays, when so many traditions revolve around food and drink — lots of food and drink. “Holidays are a challenge when people want to celebrate but their holiday traditions make them feel sick,” Mullen says. “At Suppers, we see it across religions, ethnicity and age groups.” Mullen says there can be serious challenges to socializing once you have to manage blood sugar or you’re concerned about advancing cognitive losses or inflammatory conditions. Cookies, pies, and sweet potatoes laced with brown sugar or the latkes, kugel, and challah attach to consequences like high blood sugars, brain fog, and even the pull back into addictive eating patterns. Mullen and her staff know that few people want to be the person at the holiday party who brings something good for you. So in December, many Suppers meetings are oriented toward sharing delicious recipes for holiday side dishes and desserts “that taste so good you don’t have to apologize that they’re ‘healthy,’” Mullen says. “It’s our daily practice to make the delicious food and the healthy food all the same food, and at the holidays we kick it up a notch.”

It’s kind of difficult to define the Robbinsville High boys’ cross country season. It was good, but not great. The effort was satisfying, but the end results, not so much. “Overall, I couldn’t ask for much more as a team in terms of our performance this year,” said senior Dean Gervasini, the team’s No. 3 runner. “We all had really high expectations for ourselves after an incredible season last year (winning sectionals and reaching Meet of Champions), and after every meet this year we would always be really hard on ourselves for not living up to those December 1 – 24, 2014 at the gallery expectations.” There is, however, a however. “However, we all worked really hard since the early summer and a few people stepped up into varsity spots who we may not have expected to step up like they did,” Gervasini continued. Dan White, Tyler Bork, Dean Ger vasini, Jared Taylor, (back) Howie “As a Group II school, it’s always hard Schulz, Ryan Schreyer and Jon Freeman line up at the start of the Mercer to find that depth that some of the County Cross Countr y Championships varsity boys’ race Oct. 19, 2018 other schools have, but we worked with Washington Park. Washington Crossing Park, with Jared Taylor being the top runner in 16:46. A season highlight came at the Central Jersey Group II sectional meet, when Dan White’s fifth-place finish (in 17:00) paced Robbinsville to a fourth-place finish at Thompson Park, which advanced the Ravens to the Group II state meet. “It’s always an accomplishment to make it to states,” Gervasini said. “We have a long-held tradition of excellence that goes back to when the program was first started, as every year we’ve sent a team to states. Doing it again this year even after losing some key people who graduated last year was really awesome.” At the state meet in Holmdel Park, Robbinsville finished eight points behind fourth-place Holmdel and was unable to advance to the MOC. But Gervasini noted that the Ravens did outrun their seed. “I am really happy with how states turned out, considering we were ranked 11th based on sectional results,” he said. “Being sixth and only eight points away from fourth was frustrating, but it still makes me happy to know we were right there in the mix against teams who were ranked a lot better than us previously in the year.” Dentino felt that, for the most part, Robbinsville gave a strong effort in the championship meets. “While eighth place in the county was

extremely disappointing, the reality is that Mercer County is one of the very best counties in the state,” the coach noted. “It is full of great athletes and great coaches and if you have an off-day like we did, you will pay for it every time. We also were in a very strong section, and competed well against very good teams within Central Jersey, and again against the entire state’s Group II schools.” A highlight in the state meet was the effort of Gervasini, who was the Ravens top finisher in 24th place with a time of 17:29. “Dean never had a full summer of training due to injury, so we were really excited to see how things would shake out for him,” Dentino said. “He also always had more confidence in himself with track as opposed to cross country, but started to realize just how good he was this year. He ran very well at counties, sectionals and groups.” Gervasini, who is looking into The College of New Jersey and Elizabethtown to continue his running career, had to overcome a mental speed bump in September. “I think I had the lowest point in my running career in the middle of the season,” he said. “None of my races were going well, and running was really becoming a chore rather than something I loved doing. I let coach Dentino know that I was feeling unmotivated, and his guidance throughout the year really helped me get back into the right mindset when it mattered. Gradually, my passion for the sport grew, and I started being excited to race again.” Rounding out the top four were White at No. 1, Taylor at No. 2 and junior Tyler Bork at No. 4. “Dan is a really smart racer and a tough kid,” Dentino said. “He really stepped up for as at the sectional championships. Jared has grown tremendously mentally and physically since I’ve gotten to know and work with him. He is a true two-miler/cross country guy and has come a long way with putting together strong races.” Bork had to overcome some adversity

as he battled some “nasty illnesses” over the course of the season. “He struggled to find his groove,” Dentino said. “With that being said, Ty is a very talented and very tough kid, and stepped up when we needed him. He finished as a very solid fourth for us at sectionals and at groups.” The major question entering the season was who would fill in the five-through-seven spots. That was answered by Jon Freeman, freshman Ryan Schreyer and Zack Siracusa. “These three consistently trained together, worked out together, and found each other during races,” Dentino said. “Jon is someone has been in the program for four years and has developed incredibly well. He is a consistent runner and hard worker, and it was really exciting to watch him come into his own. Likewise, Zack is a senior who has been with the track program for quite some time. However, Zack transitioned from soccer to cross country this season. He is unafraid and knows how to put his head down and compete.” With five of the top seven graduating, Schreyer (along with Bork) is the hope of the future. “Ryan was a huge part of this group,” Dentino said. “Ryan possesses a lot of talent, but what is so exciting about him is that he races with purpose and grit. We are excited to have him back and see how things play out over the next couple of years.” As for next year, Dentino will count on some other freshmen who entered the program this season. “We will be in rebuilding mode without a doubt, but we are really looking forward to it because of the challenge,” the coach said. “One of our points of pride is that we are the smallest public school in the county, yet we consistently churn out successful teams because we have a positive atmosphere and terrific kids who buy into the system day in and day out. For our younger guys, it’s now their turn to answer the call and make these next few years special as those before them have consistently done.”

Penn State next step for football All-American By Rich Fisher It has been one heck of a three years for Caedan Wallace, who went from a raw specimen to a Nittany Lion thanks to good coaching and hard work. Wallace, who moved to Robbinsville from Georgia in seventh grade, transferred to Hun after his sophomore year at Robbinsville High. He took a repeat sophomore year at Hun, and after showing constant progress as an offensive lineman each season, will head off to Penn State next year. “It’s been great to watch him grow over the past three years,” Hun coach Todd Smith. “He definitely wasn’t a polished product when we got him. It wasn’t just the physical side of it. He was always big and always able to move kids, but working on his football sense and getting him to understand the game a little better, understanding the plays we run. It was great once it all started clicking for him. He really excelled.” And exactly when was that? “I would say toward the end of his repeat sophomore year with us,” Smith said. “We started seeing less thinking and more doing. That’s the goal.” The more he started doing, the more big-time schools started noticing. The first college to show interest was Delaware State, which actually contacted him the last day of his sophomore year at Robbinsville. The following

year, Rutgers came calling. Although the Knights program is struggling, it was a Big Ten school, and Wallace started to realize how much potential he truly had. “It was kind of shocking,” he said of the Rutgers offer. “I felt personally that I could make it to that level but no coach or anybody from that type of school had made the move to recruit me. So when it happened it was kind eye opening that they approached me.” The interest started to intensify, to the point where Wallace’s final five choices came down to Penn State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Clemson and LSU. He forewent visits to LSU and Stanford after he sampled life at Happy Valley. “It feels like home to me there,” Wallace said. “Every time I step on campus I always get like a loving family type atmosphere from the coaches and the people on campus, and it’s just a really loving environment. The coaches and most of the players are like family to me now, it just feels like home.” Smith, who has sent numerous players to Division I programs since taking over at Hun, feels it’s a good fit for Wallace. “He’s going to a Big Ten team that is still grounded in running the ball and that’s how they want to make their mark, that’s great,” the coach said. “He’s gonna be playing the right style of offense. A lot of times these kids go to a school and they know when it’s right. He knew it

The Hun senior has committed to play football for Penn State next fall. was right.” Wallace attended Pond Road in 7th and 8th grade but had to play rec football for the Trenton Tornadoes, since they had an unlimited league. “I was always generally bigger, taller and a little heavier than the rest of the

kids in my grade, so I had to go unlimited and Robbinsville didn’t have that,” he said. Playing on the freshman team at RHS, Wallace actually played running back and scored a touchdown in the season finale against Middlesex. “It was fun, a good experience,” he said. “I feel like it helped me out for the future.” Asked if he ever dreamed it would be the last touchdown he’d score, Wallace laughed and said, “Actually yeah, I had a pretty good idea.” He returned to the offensive and defensive lines as a sophomore and wasn’t at all upset he would not be carrying the ball anymore. “It was fun, I didn’t mind it at all,” Wallace said. “I just like contributing to the team, making sure the team is doing good. He transferred to Hun after 10th grade for both football and academics. The Princeton-based school has gained a high profile thanks to the strong team it has and some of the teams it plays that are nationally ranked. “I just felt like I would get more looks from colleges,” Wallace said. “Hun was close to home, and I didn’t really have to move anywhere to get bigger exposure. It was just a 15-minute drive. And I get a great education.” An education he takes seriously. Wallace had a career 3.5 grade point

average at the end of last school year. He also contributed to Hun in ways other than football, as he went to Ecuador with some classmates for a school service trip. “We went out and helped some of the under-privileged tribes down there,” he said. “It was pretty cool, it was definitely a culture shock for me, just going out and helping out other people even though we didn’t really speak the same language as them.” It also made him appreciate what he had even more. “Oh yeah,” Wallace said. “One hundred percent.” Throughout the goodwill trip and hitting the books, Wallace found time to ply his trade on the football field. “He definitely has that work ethic,” Smith said. “Even this year, he started making smarter choices. He leaned up a lot, went from 320 to 295 during the season. He’s just making better choices in the lunch line and lifting harder. It’s great to see it pay off.” For the first time this season, Smith started charting pancake blocks, which are blocks that put the opposing player on his back. Wallace led the way with 47. “It was understanding the balance of what he needed to be, whether it was a

run block or pass block, how to position his body correctly, understand how to play smarter,” Smith said. “That’s what sets him apart. Even though he is 6-6 and 300 pounds, he’s one of our best athletes. Pound for pound, he could arguably be the best athlete on the team when you see the things he can do at that size with his foot speed and his quickness.” Wallace credits his coaching, along with his teammates and rival players for making him a better player. He has gone against future Division I players in practice, which helped hone his skills; and also played against some big-time talent on other teams with the schedule Hun played. It not only paid off in a scholarship, but on Jan. 6 Wallace will play on national TV as a member of the East team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The game will be on NBC from San Antonio and features the top 100 seniors in the country. “They contacted me in April,” Wallace said. “I was very surprised at that. I’m just really excited to take that next step and move forward.” Which is something he has been doing on a steady basis the past three years.

New Specialists Join Capital Health’s Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center

With a reputation for providing advanced care to patients with complex, neurological conditions affecting the brain and spine, Capital Institute for Neurosciences recently welcomed two new advanced specialists, Drs. Vernard Fennell and Varun Naragum, to the Institute’s Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center team. They join neurosurgeon Dr. Michael F. Stiefel in providing some of the latest techniques to care for stroke patients. DR. VERNARD FENNELL is a dual fellowship trained neurosurgeon specializing in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery, with additional expertise in microsurgery, skull base surgery, brain and spine tumors, spine trauma and reconstruction as well as epilepsy surgery. In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Fennell has a strong background in research, including early contributions to the design of the new EMBOTRAP II Revascularization Device, a next generation stent-retriever that safely removes blood clots from arteries in the brain that are causing a stroke. “I’m thrilled to be part of an organization that is so passionate about innovation,” said Dr. Fennell, who soon after joining Capital Health became the first dual-trained neurosurgeon in New Jersey (and among the first in the country) to use the new FDA-approved EMBOTRAP II Revascularization Device.

Dr. Fennell was also involved in some of the initial research on the device’s design. DR. VARUN NARAGUM, an interventional neurologist and neurohospitalist, is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology and was fellowship trained in neurology, vascular neurology, and endovascular surgical neuroradiology. He uses minimally invasive neuroendovascular techniques to treat conditions like aneurysms, stroke, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), atherosclerosis, brain tumors, and head and neck tumors. Neuroendovascular procedures access the brain using a small incision in the groin and a catheter that is threaded to the part of the brain being affected by vascular disease. “Each case is unique, but those patients who are appropriate candidates for neuroendovascular procedures experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, and less risk of complications,” said Dr. Naragum. “Being able to offer advanced treatment like this demonstrates Capital Health’s commitment to being a leader in all aspects of neuroscience and stroke care.”

Minimally Invasive Screening Options, Accurate Results Led by DR. JASON ROGART, director of Interventional Gastroenterology & Therapeutic Endoscopy, Capital Health’s Pancreas Screening Program aims to identify early precancerous lesions before they turn into cancer. While screening the general population for pancreatic cancer is not recommended, there are high risk groups who should consider screening. “In addition to family history concerns, adults older than age 45 are at greater risk, as are those who are overweight or have diabetes,” said Dr. Rogart. “Men and African Americans are also diagnosed more frequently, and controllable risk factors like smoking and heavy alcohol use can increase the risk very significantly.” Providers at Capital Health have specialized training, including subspecialty fellowships, in the field of pancreatic cancer and can recommend a plan and tests based on an individual’s personal risk factors and a comprehensive medical history review. Helping CHRONIC WOUNDS Heal Faster For those with diabetes or poor circulation, an injury or wound to the legs and feet can be slow to heal. For almost 30 years, residents in Mercer and adjacent counties have relied on Capital Health’s certified wound care team of physicians and nurses to provide comprehensive health care for patients with chronic wounds and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for those with qualifying conditions. “Wound care is unique in that there is no official specialization like other fields of medicine. Treating complex wounds takes a multidisciplinary approach to cover all facets of diagnosis and treatment, and at Capital Health, each patient benefits from our collaborative expertise to receive personalized evaluation and treatment based on the latest best practices,” said DR. DANIEL LEE, director of the Vascular Laboratory and former director of the Center for Wound Management at Capital Health. Using the team approach, each patient’s needs are assessed and a plan of care is implemented and shared with each

patient’s referring physician. Treatment options can include wound debridement, growth factor application, lymphedema compression therapy, wound coverage with skin substitutes, skin grafts and flaps, endovascular revascularization procedures, as well as hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments.

blood to carry more oxygen to a wound site or injured tissue and speed up the healing process,” said DR. MANISH GUGNANI, former director of the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at Capital Health.

As the first established wound care program in Mercer and Bucks counties, Capital Health was also one of the first programs in the region to introduce hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a well-established additional treatment to help those with diabetic wounds or ulcers heal faster.

Capital Health’s Center for Wound Management & Hyperbaric Medicine, located at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, treats all wounds that have not shown signs of healing, including: … Acute burns … Arterial and venous ulcers

Diabetes can cause nerve disease or neuropathy that causes a loss of sensation in the feet and legs, causing severe wounds to go unnoticed for long periods of time. The delay in recognition of a wound can make very treatable wounds more complex and exposed to infection. “HBOT provides more oxygen-rich blood to complex wounds, which helps increase the rate of healing for complex wounds and decrease the chance of infection. It involves breathing 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which enables the

MEET OUR MEDICAL DIRECTOR Capital Health’s Center for Wound Management & Hyperbaric Medicine recently welcomed a new medical director, DR. Dr. Sailes completed his residency in general surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA and completed his fellowship training in hand surgery and plastic surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. “I’m honored to join my esteemed colleagues here at Capital Health, whose level of commitment to patient care in our region is unmatched when it comes to helping those who have exhausted all other resources to help heal their chronic wounds. I look forward to joining the multidisciplinary team in continuing to expand our wound management services to patients and referring physicians,” said Dr. Sailes.

FROM THE SCHOOLS

For everything, there is a season By Kathie Foster At this time of year as we move into the fall season and dig out our cool weather gear, I am grateful to be living in a place where I can become a full participant in nature’s glorious cycle of change. As we track the transition of the earth’s journey around the sun and the landscape explodes in vibrant hues of yellow, gold, orange and vermillion it is easy to become immersed in the beauty of the natural world. This year it feels like the leaves were slow to change color. However, as the pups and I recently made our weekend trek through the woods and the forest became a magnificent show of color, I began to contemplate change as a natural part of all living things. Including us. Why is it that despite the fact that change is an inevitable part of life we humans instinctively tend to resist it? Some of the most profound changes in our lives happen slowly and subtly, over time. One day parents send their children off to kindergarten and the next they are attending senior sports banquets or welcoming their freshman home from the first semester of college. And all are wondering, “How did we get here so quickly?” Unforeseen change can happen suddenly. It can blindside us, shake us up and knock us off our feet. We might discover that the company wants to us to relocate across the country. Our career path may take an unexpected turn or we might suffer the personal loss of someone we love. At the beginning of September my family had to cope with the unexpected death of my younger sister. As we continue to work through a profound sense of sadness and loss, the members of my family are learning adapt to a “new normal” and trying to figure out how to navigate a world without Laura. Ironically, the Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus suggested, “The only constant is change.” No matter what type of change we experience, like it or not it becomes an essential lesson that ultimately winds up contributing to our growth. The ability to adapt to change is a cornerstone of healthy, thriving organizations. As a school district we understand

that it is our responsibility to respond to both internal and external forces which require us to move beyond that which we have always done. Each year, for instance, we revise and adopt new and existing policies, including policies on bullying, social media and technology that are designed to keep our students safe in an age when one mistake can have life altering consequences. Because strengthening our security is an important priority we have implemented new visitor protocols, updated our facilities rental procedures, and revised our internal drilling processes. As we research best practices, we modify our curriculum to address new content standards, graduation requirements, and to assist our students in acquiring the skills necessary for becoming Robbinsville Ready. This year, the district will engage in a collaborative approach to change through the strategic planning process. As we move forward, we intend to gather a diverse group of stakeholders comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, students, board and community members to seek help in assessing our current reality and identifying areas in need of improvement. We will encourage this community to consider complex questions and urge each member to take risks in their thinking about how they view schools and education. We will reimagine Robbinsville and move to create an intentional, purposeful and well thought out action plan that will lead us into the future. As we follow the cycle of nature, we are reminded that Autumn is a time to fall back, slow down and reflect upon our lives and the legacy we are creating for those that will follow us. This slowing down allows us to contemplate what we need in order to build our strength and to grow in wisdom, insight and awareness. If, as Heraclitus suggests, we see change as a naturally occurring event, much like the change of seasons, we can embrace it as a catalyst for growth and for becoming our best selves. For everything, there is a season. Kathie Foster is superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

Why is it that despite the fact that change is an inevitable part of life, we humans instinctively tend to resist it?

MAYOR’S COLUMN

ROBBINSVILLE’S PREMIER CAT SITTER

Thanks for another great year By Dave Fried Whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Diwali, my sincere hope is that you have a peaceful and safe holiday with your family and friends. Our country remains an incredible melting pot of cultures and belief systems. In response to a concerned resident during the great Christmas Tree vs. Holiday Tree debate in 2013, I referred to our nation as “a flavorful stew that makes our country the greatest on Earth.’’ We need to embrace all of our customs and cultures proudly. What we do not want is for that pot to be boiled down to nothing or, even worse, to the point where we are all the same. Remember, differences are good. Differences are healthy. Division is neither. A little less talking and a lot more listening would benefit us all. From an operational perspective, it’s been another very productive year at Robbinsville. Since my primary role is to keep you and your children safe, our biggest achievement was working with the Robbinsville School District and our fine police department to add two full-time school resource officers to Sharon School and Pond Road Middle School. We now have three experienced and dedicated officers—veteran Detective Kevin Colgan, Patrolwoman Melyssa Alonso and Patrolman Edward Vincent—along with K9 “Rigo,” on-site at all three schools. Thanks to the hard work of our department heads and business administrator Joy Tozzi, we were able to cut the municipal side of your tax bill for the third straight year. As hard as we tried to find another town in Mercer County that has ever done that since, well, forever, we did discover Robbinsville has been the first to do it since the recession of 2007-08. Pennmark Properties purchased the Foxmoor Plaza in August via auction for $7.5 million and has a plan to revitalize the shopping center. Pennmark has a proven track record of retail development and our hopes are high that we can finally begin moving Foxmoor in a positive and profitable direction. Thank you to the residents who have continued to patronize the businesses there through these lean years, and to those businesses for continuing to persevere through some very tough times. Council and the entire staff in Robbinsville have dedicated a great deal of time to this effort and I want to thank them for all of their hard work. Phase 1 of the Washington Woods/ Edinburg Village restoration began in November at no added cost to taxpayers. Future contracts at the site will stabilize

and plant the remainder of the site so that soil erosion is eliminated as much as practical and proper landscape is installed. In addition to receiving another AA+ rating by Standard & Poors, we celebrated the Village of Windsor and its bicentennial in September. Everyone at the township could not be more proud of its residents for their efforts and advocacy in assuring Windsor remains the bedrock of present-day Robbinsville. Our staff and legal team are working diligently on Miry Run, the new Project Freedom, Mercer Mobile Home Park, a fair sewer agreement with Hamilton Township, our own independent ZIP code, an indoor basketball facility and a new police headquarters and courthouse. New Jersey Superior Court Judge Mary C. Jacobson last month issued Robbinsville a final judgement of compliance and repose of affordable housing litigation between the township and Fair Share Housing Center. That fulfills our affordable housing obligation through 2025 as we continue to be among the Mercer County leaders in barrierfree, affordable and community housing. Upgraded technology throughout the township this year includes the addition of Internet faxing capability, security cameras and a voice-over-IP phone system that delivers superior quality and message delivery to better serve our residents. We are so proud of our Recreation Department for stepping up to the plate following the passing of our beloved Joe Barker in February. Camp enrollment is at an all-time high, while our big, home run hitting events—Community Day and the C.A.R.E. Fishing Derby—continue to deliver. Speaking of C.A.R.E., the groundbreaking initiative started in 2016 has now been adopted by every town in Mercer County. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we generated over $118,000 for the program through the 2018 State of Robbinsville Township Address and Pay it Forward event May 8 at The Stone Terrace by John Henry’s. Opiate/opioid addiction is a worldwide epidemic and Robbinsville is by no means immune, but we are determined to do our part by providing a pathway for recovery. Although we cannot save everyone, we certainly cannot arrest our way out of this problem, either. Donations to the C.A.R.E. program are used for travel and lodging expenses en route to recovery and other essentials items necessary for treatment. Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve as your mayor. It is truly an honor. May God bless you all. Dave Fried is the Mayor of Robbinsville Township.

It’s been another very productive year in Robbinsville.
