New era for Route 130? Town officials hope new car dealer kicks off development on the highway By roB anthes

ranthes@communitynews.org

Groundbreakings are rarely much more than a photo op, but Robbinsville Township officials found more than the usual reasons to celebrate one such event recently. A Nov. 26 groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction for a 50,000-square

foot car dealership at 1153 Route 130 North, next to Lamp and Shade Studio. The dealership, scheduled to open this autumn, will sell Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles. While the dealer’s ownership has big plans for its new venture, the township sees something even bigger at work. The car dealership is the first new development on Robbinsville’s stretch of Route 130 in several years, and the township hopes the dealer sparks a new era for commercial development on the highway. “I don’t know if it’s related, but my office has been inun-

dated with folks that are interested in doing something on Route 130,” said Hal English, Robbinsville Township’s community planning director. “Probably not because of it, but coincidentally on the same timeline. I think in another five years you’re not going to recognize Route 130. It will be upgraded and clean and new and modern, and there’ll be some good commerce on there. Rather than driving 55 miles per hour and just zooming by, people will be stopping and shopping.” In the last decade, Route 130 See ROUTE 130, Page 11

Familiar face named Officer of Year Policing long a calling for Slininger By sCott morGan

If you’re a fan of the police blotter, you’ve doubtless seen the words “Officer Michael Slininger” in Robbinsville’s traffic stop arrests. Probably a lot. In the almost five years Slininger has been in the Robbinsville Police’s traffic division, he’s made quite a name for himself collaring drunk drivers, traffickers of illegal substances, and others who should know better than to get behind the wheel. In 2018, he made such a name for himself that the RPD named Slininger its officer of the year. The award was announced in early December and given to him later in the month. It surprised him, though his boss doesn’t think it should have. “He’s everything we want our

officers to be,” Chief Chris Nitti said. “He’s not only a great officer when it comes to making arrests, he brings that into the realm of community policing.” It’s Slininger’s sense of empathy and compassion that makes him a great officer, Nitti said; the drive to part of a community solution. “I think that gets lost sometimes,” he said. “We all got into this job to help other people.” Nitti said Slininger needed to be recognized for more than just his record. Nevertheless, Slininger said it surprised him to get named officer of the year, if only because of the company he’s in. “There are a lot of great guys,” he said. “I’m sure it was a tough decision because there are so many great officers.” “Braggart” is definitely not a word that comes to mind speaking with Slininger. “Thoughtful,” though—that’s certainly something people

would say about him. Nitti did. “”He treats everyone with an air of respect,” Nitti said. So when it came time for the selection committee to vote on Slininger, it was a slam dunk. It was a unanimous decision, Nitti said. Surprised or not, Slininger said he’s come a long way as a police officer. And there’s still so much in front of him. Slininger is only 27 years old—and 8 in cop years. A native of Brick, he started his law enforcement career in 2012 in one of the most Jersey ways possible: in the bike unit down the shore, in Point Pleasant. He still lives in Brick, with his wife of three years—and high school sweetheart—Nicole. No kids yet, but they’re in the conversation, he said. In 2014, Slininger got hired for the Robbinsville Police, but as a dispatcher. He liked the area and had applied for a patrol slot, but the department wasn’t hiring for See POLICE, Page 9

Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, LLC. 609-586-4969 Hamilton Square, NJ

It’s better late than never for Robbinsville’s new QuickChek. The gas station and convenience store, located at 255 RobbinsvilleAllentown Road near Interstate 195 interchange 7, made its debut Jan. 22. The opening comes after several months of delays, with an original Labor Day 2018 target. The township announced the project in mid-April 2018, with construction beginning shortly thereafter. The Robbinsville location is the company’s first new store of 2019, and its ninth to open in the past 12 months. It is open 24 hours a day, and has 16 fueling pumps to go with a 5,496-square-foot convenience store. The facility also has eight electric Tesla charging stations, Robbinsville Township community development director Hal English said in a September 2018 interview with the Robbinsville Advance. QuickChek designed the convenience store with a new “Fresh to Go” concept, with more than 50 percent of the store dedicated to fresh food and beverages. It will offer grab-and-go food items, as well as made-to-order sandwiches, soups and baked goods made in-store. It has indoor seating counters, with phone and laptop charging stations and free WiFi. There is also covered outdoor seating. All patrons will receive a free large QuickChek hot or iced coffee until Feb. 3, one of several promotions QuickChek is offering at the Robbinsville store during its first weeks. In the same time period, 6-inch subs are $3, smoothies and specialty drinks are $2, and empanadas are 2 for $3. QuickChek also has committed to donating $0.25 to Robbinsville Little League for every sub, sandwich and wrap sold in the store until Feb. 21. A press release from QuickChek says the new Robbinsville store has created 50 new local jobs, including

eight management positions. Each new QuickChek location typically generates approximately $1 million in tax revenues, the release said. –Rob Anthes

Girls on the Run give back Girls participating in Girls on the Run—a nonprofit, youth development program that empowers girls in third to eighth grade through running—recently designed a community impact project to give back to the Robbinsville Police Department. The Girls on the Run team at Robbinsville Community Park wrote thank you notes and created goodie bags for Robbinsville police officers to show appreciation for their work. The goodie bags were labeled “Survival Kits” and came with a note describing the items, including Life Savers to remind the officers of the times they have saved lives and Smarties to provide wisdom for split second decisions. Officers from the Robbinsville Police Department visited the girls, coaches and families during a Girls on the Run session at Robbinsville Community Park. This spring, Girls on the Run will be offered at Robbinsville Community Park and Robbinsville Town Center as well as other towns across Mercer County. Members of Robbinsville High School’s robotics team, Nemesis, prepare to hear this year’s theme at a kickoff even Jan. 5, 2019.

Technology and Math) through inventive challenges. More than 30 local teams attended the Kickoff at Montgomery High School, including Nemesis from Robbinsville High School. The day began with students taking advantage of workshops, including optimized fundraising, computer-aided design, bumper design, sensors and the Autodesk Inventor program. Then, the students gathered as a live broadcast from FIRST headquarters in New Hampshire unveiled this year’s challenge, Destination: Deep Space “After hearing about previous competitions, I looked forward to my first Kickoff, and couldn’t wait to find out about this year’s challenge,” said Sara Marincas, a Nemesis freshman. Griffin David, a Nemesis freshman, described his first Kickoff as “an amazing experience that left me with a rush of excitement for the upcoming season.” Teams build competitive robots in six weeks with limited finances and

resources. This year’s game is played with two alliances of three robots each. Each alliance has two rocket ships and a smaller cargo ship. The game begins during a “sandstorm,” where operators are unable to see their robots and must use pre-programmed instructions or vision technology to begin the match. To score points, the robots load their cargo and hatch panel game pieces onto the ships. The teams place balls onto the ship and cover it with a disc to secure it. After the event, teams were eager to start brainstorming and prototyping their robots. “As my final build season begins, I can’t wait to see what our strategy team comes up with. This looks like it’s going to be an exciting ride,” said Rahul Sawant, a Nemesis senior. Nemesis will be competing at Mount Olive on March 9–10, the Central New York Regional March 14–16 and Bensalem March 30–31. All events are free and open to the public. –Pravallika Palwai

Michael Slininger was named the Robbinsville Police Officer of the Year in December 2018. Slininger, 27, started in Robbinsville as a dispatcher in 2014 before being hired as a patrol officer a few months later. POLICE continued from Page 1 that at that moment. So for six months, until a field position opened, Slininger “got a little experience” on the telephones, which are the usually first contact people have with emergency management. Part of that little experience was coming to know just how tough a job dispatchers actually have. “It’s really incredible what they have to deal with,” Slininger said. On top of the minor calls, it’s a dispatcher’s job to talk to people who are, as Slininger put it, often having “the worst day of their lives.” Dispatchers need to get information from people who might not be communicating at their best, translate what it all means, and get it to an officer. Then there’s the fact that Robbinsville is a regional 911 communications center, which means that any 911 call in the area goes through Robbinsville. “When that happens, everything else has to stop,” Slininger said. “I give them an incredible amount of props.” Companies like UPS are famous for not promoting workers until they spend some time doing every job in the organi-

zation. It makes them, so the sentiment goes, more empathetic to the various levels of workers. Slininger—who, for the record, has never worked for UPS— said his time in the dispatcher trenches achieved that same goal, by grounding him in what those officers do. “Being on that side of it gave me a new appreciation for what goes into taking those calls,” he said. “When I’m on patrol, it makes me a little more patient.” Patience came from his time in Point Pleasant Beach, too. There, patrolling the boardwalk, he often had to deal with revelers in various states of intoxication. It was something else that he said taught him the value of talking a problem through over wrestling a problem to the ground. Slininger said he’s always had the drive to help people and serve the community. Being a police officer just seemed the most fitting extension of that for him; the place he felt he could do the most good. Before he decided on policing, he considered military service, like his brother. But he felt he could do more as a cop, and he’s the first in his family to go that route. His father is a refrigeration engineer and his mother is a secretary. Slininger is very much about the holistic picture of what it means to be an officer in a community. That, and he likes what he calls the freedom of his job. “Honestly, the main thing I like is that every day is different,” he said. “My office is the entire township.” And like someone actually in an office, he likes to browse around a bit and get to know the people he works for. “When I’m not answering calls, it’s really on me to go find trouble,” he said. “And to find someone who needs help.” Eight years on the job has taught him about a certain gut instinct that helps in sniffing out that trouble. He said that people doing something wrong or who are hiding something tend to have telling body language or certain verbal tics that give them away. Those quirks tend to be slight and subtle, he said, but once you see them enough, you learn to read the signals that help get someone up to no good off the streets. For now, Slininger is enjoying his time in the traffic enforcement unit, but he does indeed have higher aspirations. “I do have an interest in moving up,” he said. “In the long term, I’d like to get into something supervisory. Or detective work.”

Township zoning officer Ann Bell, councilman Dan Schuberth, township director of community development Hal English, council vice president Chris Ciaccio, township engineer John Nunziato, Robbinsville Chr yslerDodge-Jeep-Ram owner Phil Mastellone, Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried and Robbinsville Chr ysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram owner Frank Esposito celebrate the groundbreaking of the car dealership on Route 130. ROUTE 130 continued from Page 1 has welcomed a Taco Bell, a pair of new strip malls and a complex at the East Windsor border with a Dunkin Donuts, bank and daycare. But for the most part, Route 130 is much the same it has been for decades. Small steps forward could be made in the next two years. The car dealership plans to open in late 2019. Down the road, in Windsor, a new gas station with a bagel shop and convenience store on the lot has a scheduled spring opening. English said the bagel shop will be “a known bagel company, possibly from the Princeton area.” Then, in 2020, construction will start on a Wawa gas station and market at the intersection of Route 130 South and Meadowbrook Road. Wawa uses the same builders for all its locations, and its Robbinsville project must wait for the completion of five other Wawa stores in New Jersey, English said. Next to Wawa will be additional retail sites, the exact details of which have yet to be determined. That’s not the only thing left to be determined on Route 130, but it’s the unfinished nature of the highway’s commercial scene—plus Robbinsville’s recent history with development—that actually drew the car dealership’s owners to Robbinsville. “Robbinsville and the area is absolutely exploding,” said Phil Mastellone, co-owner of Robbinsville ChryslerDodge-Jeep-Ram. “We just see it as the absolutely perfect place for a project. We think Route 130 will be a very busy corridor in the future.” A fully developed Route 130 obviously could mean good conditions for selling lots of cars, but Mastellone said he and

co-owners Frank Esposito and Frank Tackett want to do more than be in business in Robbinsville. The group has dealerships across the state, including Route 33 Nissan in Hamilton, and Mastellone said he often hears from residents skeptical about how a car dealership can spur positive development for a town. To combat this, Mastellone and his partners have set out a pair of programs to better integrate with the community. The first would be working with the local schools to promote vocational trades, and potentially even doing joint programs with the school district, English said. Mastellone said he started his career as a mechanic, and wants to show that not every American needs to go to college in order to achieve success. He said he is proud to offer jobs at his dealerships for young people who pursued a trade. The second initiative, Mastellone said, is a commitment to building in an environmentally friendly manner. The building and the materials going into it are green, he said, and the ownership group also will be reforesting the property around the dealership so that it blends with its surroundings more. The trees that can’t be replaced on the property itself will be planted elsewhere in Robbinsville, Mastellone said. “We’re going to be a credit to Robbinsville and the county,” Mastellone said. “We’re going to show development can work with the environment.” The end result is that, regardless of what happens elsewhere on Route 130, the township administration has faith the new Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram dealer will be a plus for Robbinsville. “I think they’re going to be a good neighbor,” English said.

FOOD & DINING

Chipotle-style Korean BBQ comes to Princeton By Joe Emanski

jemanski@communitynews.org

The success of the Chipotle Mexican Grill revolutionized Tex-Mex cuisine in America. Diners responded to the restaurant chain’s fast-casual, assembly-line menu, where they could watch staff make their burritos and burrito bowls as they dictated what did and didn’t go into them. Slowly but surely, we’re starting to see the Chipotle model applied to other cuisines. Piccolo Pronto, which opened in The College of New Jersey’s Campus Town in 2016, uses it to serve pizza and pasta. And last fall, two more restaurants opened with the same idea—The Simple Greek in Hamilton, which we wrote Create-your-own, Katsu Style and LA Style bowls at KBG Korean BBQ in about last month, and KBG Korean BBQ Princeton. (Staff photo by Samantha Sciarrotta.) and Grill in Princeton. KBG has been open since October at 180 Nassau St., between Lil Thai Pin and ing Nassau Sushi across Nassau and or cabbage topped with proteins, veggies the recently closed Marhaba Middle- Soonja’s Cafe down on Alexander, KBG and condiments ($8.45 to $10.95), or tacos Eastern restaurant. of rice, protein and toppings. LA Style comes with chicken on a bed of white rice with lettuce, corn, tomato, cilantro, lime juice, Asian vinaigrette and smokey KBG sauce. KBG Style has bulgogi, red cabbage, kimchi, pickled cucumbers, bean sprouts and KGB sauce on a bed of kimchi fried rice. Other topping options include fried egg, cheese and sour cream. There are also a few side items available, including fries ($6.95), mandoo (fried dumplings—5 for $6), and soondoobu (spicy tofu soup—$9.95 to $11.95), as well as chicken tenders and wings offered with eight different sauces, including citrus pepper and mango habanero. A couple of colleagues and I stopped into KBG one day last month to try some of the bowls. We ordered an LA Style bowl and a Katsu Style bowl. The latter is breaded chicken and shrimp tempura on white rice topped with mandoo, spring roll, Katsu sauce, smokey KBG sauce and a fried egg. We also got a create-your-own bowl with bulgogi, cabbage, rice, corn, egg, kimchi, and KBG sauce. We agreed that both chicken bowls were on the bland side. The chicken katsu was room temperature and bone dry, like it had been out a while, while the BBQ chicken

was also dry and unappealingly greasy. The overcooked white rice seemed straight out of a rice cooker and despite the presence of quite a bit of sauce per bowl, there just was not a ton of flavor. The KBG sauce, whether smokey or not, underwhelmed us all, sweet, not smokey, and not assertive. The bulgogi was our favorite of the proteins we tried: juicy and tender with a hint of sweet chili sauce. It couldn’t really be called grilled—clearly it is pan fried—but it is satisfying. In general we enjoyed the veggie toppings, which were generally fresh and refreshing. The lighter ingredients offset the heavier meat in a way that worked well. The sour kimchi added a necessary kick to the dishes overall. It’s the kimchi that really encapsulates my main critique of KBG. It’s too timid, decidedly lacking in funk, and that’s true of everything I ate there. We live in a time when people are seeking out new flavors and textures, but KBG is still calibrated for the mainstream taste. If you’re looking to dip your toe in the waters of Korean cuisine, KBG is a sensible place to start. But if you’re hoping to have an authentic international experience, KBG— like Chipotle vis-à-vis Mexican food—probably isn’t the place to find it. As one taster put it, KBG was kind of like eating a Korean BBQ recipe we found online and made at

home for ourselves. Still, it’s easy to see the appeal of the KBG concept. Portions are generous, and customers can readily finetune their meals to suit their palates. Calorie counters can put together a dish that wouldn’t ruin their diets. A heaping bowl or a stuffed burrito plus some wings or fries should fill any empty stomach, and with so many toppings to choose from regulars would find it difficult to grow bored with the menu. KBG is open from 11 to 9 daily. On the web: eatkbg.com. *** Thinking of the blah rice at KBG makes me want to stop in to either Aryana Grill or Afghan Kabob and Grill on Route 33 in Hamilton. I like the Afghani rice quite a bit at both restaurants; Afghan Kabob’s rice is warming, with a pronounced cinnamon flavor. In Aryana’s I don’t detect much cinnamon flavor, and I haven’t figured out just which spices I can sense in it, but I like it just as much. There are times when rice satisfies by providing texture and bulk, serving primarily as a carrier for other flavors, but a plateful of long-grain Afghani rice from either restaurant would easily stand as a meal on its own. But my favorite thing at either restaurant is undoubtedly Aryana’s side dish of stewed chickpeas. Spoonful for spoonful the chewy, melty, umami-loaded stew may be the most satisfying mouthful around. It’s one of those things that’s so good, I’m

content to have a small amount of it each time. More would seem overindulgent. Anyone who likes the braised white beans at Zoe’s Kitchen has got to try Aryana’s chickpeas. Every once in a while there’s a side dish at a restaurant that’s so good, it’s the thing you want to go there to have, rather than any of the main dishes the place is known for. Sometimes that thing doesn’t even reach the level of side dish. I am pretty sure there are times I wanted to go to DeLorenzo’s Pizza not just because I liked the pizza, which I did, but also because I have always thought they had the best romano cheese to sprinkle over top. And of course, there are many in the area who still remember the $3 blue cheese dressing at Pete Lorenzo’s Steakhouse. One of the restaurants I go to most these days is La Taqueria, on U.S. 206 in Lawrence. Ostensibly I go there for the tacos al pastor, especially on Tuesday when they are just $5.99 for lunch, which is a steal. But the real reason I am there, and why I always eat in rather than take out, is the red salsa. It’s the best salsa I have ever had. It’s thoroughly pureed, with a distinct chipotlesin-adobo character—and while I’m there, I scoop up as much as I can with every bite of housemade tortilla chips they serve with it. Simple pleasures like this are the best pleasures, if you ask me. The salsa verde is great too.

Goalie Cooper makes the most of opportunity on ice By Justin Feil Justin Cooper has treated everything that’s come his way as an opportunity. When the Robbinsville High School ice hockey goalie was on the bench in his first two seasons, it was a chance to learn. When he stepped into a starting role last year, it was a chance to shine. When he’s sought out extra ice time and chances to play, it’s to hone his craft. And this year he’s added captain duties to his plate for his senior season with the Ravens. “I’ve always felt a responsibility to lead the team,” Cooper said. “It’s something I’ve been working toward since I was a freshman and watching certain guys take that role, it motivates you to assume that position when you get there.” Cooper’s road to a leader on ice got a late start. He was focused on baseball until middle school when he made a switch to skates. “Growing up, I’d always wanted to be a goalie,” Cooper said. “I’d never gotten around to it. Baseball was always my sport. That didn’t work out and so I decided I’d teach myself to skate with a little help from my dad. At that time, I had two years before high school

Robbinsville High’s Justin Cooper was an all-conference goalie last year, his first season starting. He is one of three seniors on this year’s team. started. I was going to work my tail off and see if I could make the high school team.

“I sat the bench in travel for a year, my first year. I took a starting role the next year and over the next few years, I’ve

been playing travel until I’m here now. A lot of work, a lot of sitting the bench, a lot of practices, a lot of late nights, but I couldn’t ask for a better position to be in. It just started when I was young and I worked towards playing.” Cooper didn’t play much in his first two years of high school with the Ravens. He sat behind an upperclassmen, a sponge to all that was going on around him. “It was definitely tough,” he said. “I don’t like sitting the bench, I don’t think anyone does. It definitely makes your playing time more special. I’m glad I was able to sit the bench to get to learn from everyone. This is a level of play I wasn’t used to. There were kids four years older than me. To see how my elders went about their business, how they handled things, how they approached games, how they prepared, you’re not just thrown into the fire – you sort of get to see how does guys prepare, how does he does this, what does he do right, what does he do wrong and how can I learn from his mistakes. Then you take everything you’ve learned from everyone else and apply it to yourself and that’s the player you become.” It’s worked out well for Robbinsville.

Cooper has taken to his new passion. He was an All-Colonial Valley Conference goalie last year with an .890 save percentage and 332 saves. “I was happy that I felt like I gave us a chance to win every single time we hit the ice,” Cooper said. “By virtue of my position, a bad game for me is a bad game for the team. That’s a lot of pressure so I was proud of the way I was able to handle that and give us a chance to win no matter who we were playing.” The Ravens are a little bit of a younger team this year. Cooper is one of only three seniors for a team that started 3-3-2 before three straight losses. “I think in the beginning we saw a lot of depth in the team, way more than last year,” said second-year head coach Rob Davis. “I was able to run a line and a half maybe last year. This year, I can run about three lines. We’re working on finding our flow, and one of the big issues is we have some kids that play at a high level of travel. It’s difficult in a way to play with when we ask them to play our systems, sometimes it’s a mix-up between what we ask them to play and what they play with travel.” The makeup of the team shows that Robbinsville, which is playing again as a co-op with Allentown High School, has talent. The mix of the two schools gives them players with skill enough to top last year’s seven-win total. “Where we sit now I think it has the potential to be better and certainly the talent to be better,” Cooper said. “If we just bear down for the second half of the season and come together and work hard every single time we touch the ice, all it takes is one win. You have a big win against a good team and all of a sudden, you’re on a roll. I feel like once we string together a few wins, I think we could really right the ship and we’re certainly capable of doing that.” The first line has led the offensive end. Jack Pallitto, who moved from a defenseman spot midseason last year, is one of the top scorers in the CVC and partnered with Mitch Ducalo and Liam Hartmann. Robbinsville’s offensive production is reaping the benefits of its deeper talent with more goal-scoring. “That definitely increased from last year,” Davis said. “We made a late shift to move a defenseman up to forward. He’s one of, if not, our top scorer. That’s helped our first line. We’ve been connecting on the ice and that first line has a big plus-minus.” Cooper is trying to do his part again between the pipes. The Robbinsville three-game losing streak was snapped by a 3-0 shutout, his first shutout of the season. He had 25 saves in the win. “Justin Cooper has been very consistent,” Davis said. “The kid’s dedication and drive is bar none. Over the summer, he let me know of camps and

things he was doing to improve. We talk pretty regularly, and he takes the game to heart. He’s a very dedicated player to the team and takes it seriously. He takes the blame for breakdowns on the ice, but I haven’t had one goal that was on him.” Cooper’s strong faith helps him handle the pressure of the goalie position and helps him keep the sport in perspective. He takes ownership for the goals allowed, and does all he can to keep the team looking forward. “It’s really about taking accountability, being a leader and setting up the guys that are going to be there for the next year or so and setting them up for success,” Cooper said. “I’m just trying to create a culture and show them what it’s like to win and show them what they need to do to prepare and show them what it takes to win. Hopefully in doing that they can have success in the future.” Cooper is helping to invest in that future with his back-up goalie, Allentown’s Michael Zuppa. Zuppa came to the position and the sport just last year and Cooper is helping to groom him for next season when he could take over the starting spot. “It was about what can I show him and how can I carry myself that he can then replicate and see hopefully the same if not more success than me.” Cooper said. “I’m confident in him just seeing how he’s improved over the last couple years.” Cooper is trying to make this season last as long as possible. It’s bittersweet to be a senior and a leader, but also know it’s his last high school season. He’s hoping that the Ravens can make a late run in tournament time. “The way I see the Mercer County Tournament, it’s a chance to shock some people,” he said. “We’re obviously not the favorites, but we can go out there and maybe surprise some people and catch a team off guard, maybe win a game that we shouldn’t. That’s what I really look forward to having the opportunity to do.” Cooper has been happy with the way things have progressed since taking up the goalie position. He’s climbed in role and responsibility each year and is seeing his dedication pay off to cap his career at Robbinsville. “It’s certainly satisfying,” Cooper said. “My takeaway is something a little more than hockey. I looked at it as a goal I’d have to work at really hard if I wanted to accomplish it. It wasn’t something I could just throw on a pair of skates and go out and do. I think it was a very valuable learning experience to see what it’s like to have to work for something that the reward is not immediate for and stick to it for multiple years no matter how long it took, and to eventually see that pay off has been extremely gratifying.”

‘Success certainly is satisfying. It wasn’t something I could just throw on a pair of skates and do.’ –Justin Cooper, Robbinsville ice hockey goalie

B I - M O N T H LY N E W S F R O M C A P I TA L H E A LT H After an initial meeting with Dr. Chung, participants begin one of two diet options in which “real” food is either replaced entirely by or balanced with high protein/ low carb meals (depending on individual nutrition requirements). Both diets are flexible enough to accommodate the individual needs of each participant.

Safe Options for Achieving Your

2019 WEIGHT GOALS For anyone struggling with obesity, the thought of achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can sometimes seem impossible. To help break harmful eating patterns and establish lasting routines for long-term health, Capital Health’s Metabolic & Weight Loss Center, located at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, offers surgical and non-surgical options for safe, healthy weight loss results that last a lifetime. “Our comprehensive approach is what makes the Metabolic & Weight Loss Center unique,” said DR. JOOYEUN CHUNG, medical director of the Center. “By addressing the medical, behavioral, and nutritional issues related to obesity, we come to understand each candidate not just as a patient, but as a person.” A Serious Commitment In addition to leading the Metabolic & Weight Loss Center, Dr. Chung is a fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of metabolic disorders. As one of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the region, she works with her expert team to carefully evaluate each candidate for weight

loss surgery. Those who are cleared for surgery receive personalized care from a team that includes Dr. Chung, a psychologist, and a registered dietitian. The Center offers the full complement of weight loss surgeries, including sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. Depending on which option is chosen, weight loss surgery works by either changing the anatomy of your stomach or the way your body absorbs nutrition. After surgery, patients and their team at the Center continue to work together to achieve and maintain healthy weight goals. Change Your Routine, Change Your Life For those who do not fall within surgery guidelines or are looking for a non-surgical alternative to weight loss, the Center also offers a Medical Weight Loss Program, a protein-based meal replacement plan that is strictly monitored by Dr. Chung and her team. Replacement foods include protein bars, shakes, pudding, and soups that are part of a larger system of lifestyle changes — nutrition education, physical activity, behavior modification and group support — all of which change your relationship with food.

“Our program is all about personal accountability, which is the key to long-term success,” said Dr. Chung. “Participants are required to visit our dietitian once a week for ongoing support and a weekly supply of meal supplements. They also meet with me once a month to review lab tests to monitor their ongoing progress.” After they achieve their weight goals, participants gradually swap out replacement products with real food and implement the eating patterns and fitness techniques they learned during the program. Before and Ever After When it comes to losing weight safely, there is no easy way out, but patients at Capital Health’s Metabolic & Weight Loss Center never have to go through it alone. Long after replacement meals are finished and recovery from surgery is complete, they continue to receive support that helps sustain a lifetime of good health.

AMERICAN HEART MONTH KNOW THE SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK AND WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS HAVING ONE.

If you or a loved one is experiencing the signs of a heart attack, call 9-1-1. This puts you in contact with a trained dispatcher who will tell you what to do and sends an ambulance to your location. When the ambulance arrives, treatment begins in your home and the emergency department is prepared for your arrival at the hospital. Because your symptoms may get worse, driving yourself is a bad idea. The Chest Pain Center at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell is accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care and the American College of Cardiology. This means the Center meets high standards for diagnosing and treating cardiac emergencies, such as heart attacks. When someone is having a heart attack, time to treatment is critical. Capital Health’s pre-hospital alert system allows ambulance patients to be tested in their homes and mobilizes an interventional team at the hospital if there is evidence of a heart attack, saving time for an initial EKG test or faster bedside blood tests for troponin, a protein that enters the blood stream during a heart attack. If you or a loved one is having a severe heart attack caused by prolonged restricted blood flow due to a clot or ruptured plaque, Capital Health’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab is ready to provide an emergency stent placement.

After you or your loved one has recovered, your last step is preventing another heart attack or heart-related illness. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, located at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, offers a team of physicians, nurses, exercise physiologists and registered dietitians who provide individually prescribed education and exercise. All program candidates are interviewed prior to entering the Cardiac Rehabilitation program, which allows a team to develop and implement a personalized care plan. Participants include those who have experienced:

… Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) within the past 12 months

FROM THE SCHOOLS

To boldly go By Kathie Foster Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life, and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. ~ James Tiberius Kirk, captain, Starship Enterprise Perhaps I am dating myself, but what the heck? To begin the new year, I am throwing caution to the wind to declare passionately and boldly that I am a Trekkie! In each episode crew members join forces to battle deadly monsters, fight alien nations, and travel among the galaxies through time and space. The series offers lessons in morality as the main characters struggle with choices of good vs. evil. Captain Kirk, courageous and somewhat impulsive, has a tendency to follow his heart, occasionally at the expense of common sense. Mr. Spock, his ever faithful chief science and first officer, carefully weighs the elements of each situation using his cool sense of logic, intellect, and reason. The Star Trek series creates a hopeful and optimistic view of life among a very diverse group of professionals working together to unite the galaxy for peace. As we embrace a new year, we also enter a new frontier in a sense for we have yet to know what 2019 will hold. We each take the initial steps on our own personal journey to venture boldly toward an unknown future. But what does it look like to actually live a bold life? It does not necessarily have to mean bungee jumping off a bridge, skydiving, or walking barefoot over hot coals (although those things surely would qualify). In reality, living a bold life can look different for each of us. Tess Marshall, author of The Bold Life, notes that living boldly equates to speaking our own truth and living life with passion and purpose. So what might living boldly mean? It might involve taking risks and risking feeling uncomfortable. It could mean standing within our own discomfort in order to acclimate ourselves to a new situation or experience. It might mean moving beyond a pervasive sense of fear that has kept us anchored in place for far too long. This year, we in Robbinsville commit to living boldly. As we begin our 2019 journey we will take intentional steps to support our students and one another in the following ways: Encourage students to work through adversity. One of the tenets of the Robbinsville Ready initiative involves creating resilient and self-directed learners. It is resilience, or grit, after all that helps us navi-

gate adversity. Steve Maraboli, author of Life, the Truth, and Being Free, states, “Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.” Individuals that demonstrate grit have the capacity to take risks without fear of failure. They have learned to overcome setbacks by drawing on experience and to be flexible in their thinking. This year we continue our commitment to help our students set goals and seek resolutions by integrating creative ways to fine-tune their thinking in the face of difficult situations. Confront issues of equity. The administrative leadership team is currently working with Dr. Eddie Fergus, author and applied researcher at Temple University, to confront issues of equity. Using data we are identifying areas of disproportionality with attendance, discipline, and achievement. This work is leading to dynamic and sometimes difficult discussions as we challenge our own—as well as systemic—biases. The goal of this collective effort will help us to develop a mindset through which we view all of our decisions through the lens of equity. If this isn’t bold work, I don’t know what is. Celebrate outstanding examples fearless and bold living. We applaud our alumni who are reaching out to share their own stories of living a bold life. This year we are bringing back the Alumni Spotlight, a periodic electronic publication in which we will feature interviews with former graduates of Robbinsville High School. They will update us on the twists and turns their lives have taken since graduation, sharing successes as well as challenges. They will also offer advice based upon their own experience to current students. We believe that you will be as delighted and impressed with their stories as we are. Stay tuned! Many of us fall into the trap of envisioning the future as a reflection of our past, particularly as it pertains to our mistakes. The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard said, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” When we find ourselves feeling stuck, whether in the past or by comparing ourselves to others for instance, it is incumbent upon us recognize that we alone hold the key to changing these beliefs, no matter how deeply held. Over the next year as we dare to create lives of meaning and purpose, I challenge each of us to open our minds and hearts to the brave and wondrous. For 2019, I wish you a bold and fearless new year. Live long and prosper. Kathie Foster is superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

As we embrace a new year, we also enter a new frontier.

enough physical activity can all contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels. Smoking. More than 37 million U.S. adults are smokers. Smoking damages the blood vessels. Obesity. Carrying extra weight puts stress on the heart. More than 1 in 3 Americans—and nearly 1 in 6 children ages 2 to 19—is clinically obese. Diabetes. Diabetes causes sugar to build up in the blood, thus damaging blood vessels and nerves that help control the heart muscle. Nearly 1 in 10 people in the United States has diabetes. Physical inactivity. Staying physically active helps keep the heart and blood vessels healthy. Unhealthy eating patterns. Replacing foods high in sodium/salt with fresh fruits and vegetables can help lower blood pressure. Diets high in trans-fat, saturated fat and added sugar increases the risk factor for heart disease. *** Big “Welcome to Robbinsville!” shout out to CEO Dean Durling and the good people of QuickChek, who opened their 159th family-owned store next to NorthStar Vets on RobbinsvilleAllentown Road on Jan. 22. QuickChek is offering free iced and hot coffee for a limited time in February, and will be donating 25 cents from every sub, hoagie and wrap sold—also for a limited time this month—to the Robbinsville Little League. Other businesses that officially opened in town with ribbon-cutting ceremonies since the start of 2019 include: Berkshire Hathaway in the new Main Street Commons plaza, Fit Body Boot Camp in the Foxmoor Shopping Center and Chase Bank. February is “Heart Month,” making it the perfect time to learn about your risk for heart disease and the steps you should take to live a longer, healthier life. Heart disease doesn’t happen just to older adults, and it does not just impact men, since cardiovascular disease (CVD) will kill more women (1 in 4) this year than all cancers combined. High rates of obesity and high blood pressure among those aged 35-64 are putting them at risk for CVD much earlier in life, and half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking), according to the Centers for Disease Control. Robbinsville is just one of countless municipalities planning to “Go Red” on Feb. 1, as the American Heart Association marks the 16th Anniversary “National Wear Red Day”—a massive national public awareness where people from all walks of life bring attention to the sobering reality of heart disease and stroke among our population. Key risk factors include: High blood pressure. Millions of Americans of all ages have high blood pressure, many of them in their 40s and 50s. Having uncontrolled high blood pressure is one of the biggest risks for heart disease and other harmful conditions, such as stroke. Just a reminder that blood pressure screening is available at the Robbinsville Senior Center all-purpose room each Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. High cholesterol. High cholesterol also can increase the risk for heart disease. Having diabetes and obesity, smoking, eating unhealthy foods and not
