Event hosted by RHS to explore the perils of overprotecting your children

Heavyweight’s route to top of UFC goes through Robbinsville

By kevin kUnZmann As recently as 2016, Mercer County was among the three New Jersey counties with the greatest rate of suicide attempts and self-inflicted injuries among people aged 10 to 24 years old, according to the state Suicide Report from the Department of Children and Family. In just under a two-year span from early 2016 to later 2017, seven suicides were confirmed to be teenagers that either lived or attended school in the county. These troubling numbers— just as much as the stories behind them—drove school district administrators in Mercer County to action. More specifically, they created a novel call to action. Legislation was proposed and passed last year that connected 10 Mercer County school district superintendents to a Call to Action to prevent youth suicides. Since then, the conglomerate has hosted a series of events: a presentation at Rider University intended to kick off a countywide focus on student mental health last January, a discussion on support at the College of New Jersey last May, and now, an effort to learn how to apply best practices through a program next month. On April 24, the call-to-action team, in collaboration with the See PARENTING, Page 9

Sprouting partnership Mayor to fete bond between food bank and hydroponic farm April 30 By eRin kameL The 320-square-foot upcycled shipping container sitting outside the senior center in Robbinsville’s municipal complex doesn’t look like much from the street. But inside is a state of the art vertical hydroponic farming system that feeds families in need every week. Since its introduction just 15 months ago, the hydroponic

farm, alongside Mercer Street Friends Food Bank, has aided in feeding hundreds of children in Mercer County through its Send Hunger Packing program. Right now, the farm is running a trial period to test the potential to grow herbs like basil and cilantro in order to expand its variety of crops. The Leafy Green Machine already houses over 3,000 crops including lettuce, kale, Swiss chard and collard greens—and requires just 10 gallons of water per day to do so. The farm uses 90 percent less water than conventional agriculture methods because of its closed recirculating system, according to

Robbinsville hydroponic farm coordinator Kyle Clement. With modern plant science and plant nutrition, hydroponic farmers like Clement know exactly what their crops need to grow. They provide the nutrients, light, temperature and humidity the plants require to thrive using modern technology and limited space. Elements like light and air quality are controlled through a computer sensor and timer to maintain an optimal habitat for growth. A nutrient-rich solution is fed to the plants through water emitters. “We can create an environment that provides all of the See FARM, Page 15

Corey Anderson might stop in Yummy Sushi for some tom yum soup, but that’s never his main priority when he comes into Robbinsville. “I’m here for one reason,” Anderson said. “If I’m in Robbinsville, I’m in the gym.” “Overtime” Anderson is one of the highly ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship contenders who trains at the Ricardo Almeida Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in Robbinsville. Anderson is the heaviest of those training under the jiu jitsu expert. He is ranked sixth in the light heavyweight division following a win by unanimous decision over Ilir Latifi of Sweden at The Forum in Inglewood, California, on Dec. 29, 2018. “I’m not here just to be here,” Anderson said. “I’m here for one reason—that’s the belt. Anything else doesn’t make sense for me.” It’s been quite a winding trip that’s brought Anderson to Robbinsville. He wrestled in high school in his native Illinois before wrestling in junior college at Lincoln College, also in Illinois. He placed as high as sixth in the Junior College nationals. Judge Mary C. Jacobson signed an order March 14 appointing three commissioners, and expects a report to be delivered to her on or by July 15. The commissioners will set the final valuation of the parcel. Robbinsville Township filed an action of taking in state Superior Court in November 2018 determining that acquisition of the property is in the public interest. The land will be used for passive rereation and be added to the township’s open space inventory. Mercer County has pledge to help with the final cost of obtaining Miry Run Country Club. The Eminent Domain Act provides a procedure for a municipality to engage in formal negotiations and, in the event such negotiations are unsuccessful, to file a condemnation action and to secure a price to be paid as fair and just compensation in advance of the filing to take the land.

On Tuesday, April 9, Robbinsville Township will host a “Knock Out Opioid Abuse” town hall meeting at the Senior Center (1117 Route 130) in coordination with the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey. Organized with the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey in partnership with the township’s C.A.R.E. program, the meeting will focus on the issue of prescription drug dependency and heroin abuse, including collaboration from local prevention and treatment organizations, as well as local and county law enforcement, government and medical community leaders. Residents of Robbinsville and surrounding area are invited to join the conversation, which will included new information and the latest issues surrounding the opioid abuse crisis. Panel members will include: Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri, chairman of psychiatry department at Penn Medicine Dr. Neal Schofield, Robbinsville Township Mayor Dave Fried, Minister Edgar Shaffer of First Baptist Church, Marissa Esposito who is in recovery thanks to the C.A.R.E. program, and Legacy Treatment Center CEO Roy Leitstein.

PARENTING continued from Page 1 Traumatic Loss Coalition, will host a presentation by former Stanford University dean and author Julie Lythcott-Haims at Robbinsville High School. LythcottHaims, a once-featured speaker in a TED Talk presentation, is the author of the best-selling parenting book How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success. Robbinsville School District superintendent Kathie Foster said that LythcottHaims’ work highlights proven strategies for fostering children’s resiliency, self-direction, and emotional well-being. “She also highlights how to navigate the “college arms-race” and having families create their own definition of success,” Foster said in a statement. Such a discussion is pivotal for the districts to continue growing this rhetoric. “For us, it’s all about raising awareness, and providing support,” Hopewell Valley School District superintendent Thomas Smith said. “We know kids have suffered in the past, whether it was embarrassment or pain, or something else. But nothing was reported to us.” The past couple of years have been particularly difficult on the county administrators due to frustration, Smith noted—some tragedies or incidents to have befallen their students happened without their prior knowing of any problem. Even in instances when students were hospitalized from an accident, faculty and administration may not have been told. But since the awareness campaign has begun, Smith has seen more students and parents step forward and ask for help. “I think kids are more stressed, and by raising awareness, we’re realizing the size of the problem, and that’s something that wasn’t done before,” he said. “And that’s good.” What Lythcott-Haims—in her presentation and Q&A session, free of charge to the public—will provide is practices

to properly navigate common teenage student stressors such as the “college arms-race” and the burdens of academic success. It’s as beneficial for parents to learn as it is for school leaders to share the lesson with them. “I hope parents in our Hamilton community can join this free event about reducing our children's stress and supporting their mental and emotional health,” Hamilton School District superintendent Scott Rocco said in a statement. Smith set high expectations for the presentation, noting the Rider University event included 600-plus attendees. There’s been great early engagement for what is, to his knowledge, the first-of-its-kind Call to Action among the Mercer County schools. It was an initiative he remarked was fairly easy to get going, too. “We have a unique size and makeup here in Mercer County, and we’re all pretty connected as superintendents,” he said. “If you were in a different county with 30, even 50 different people, it might be a little harder. But because of our size—and really because of the people and their interest—we’ve been able to collaborate on a lot.” Early on—when statistics were at their most troubling and upsetting stories of students trying and failing to cope were coming to light—the Call to Action was getting mixed reactions. Smith recalled people suggesting that more problems could possibly come from their efforts to raise awareness. As these presentations have continued, he’s learned it’s the opposite: people suffering in silence are now welcoming their support. “This is all about raising healthier students, in healthier schools,” he said. An Evening With Julie LythcottHaims will take place Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the performing arts center at Robbinsville High School, 155 Robbinsville Edinburg Road in Robbinsville. Parking is in the rear of the school. For more information, go online to smore.com/zswd8.

ANDERSON continued from Page 1 legiate career in style at WisconsinWhitewater, where he placed second in the heavyweight final at the 2012 NCAA Division III national championships. “It helped and motivated,” Anderson said. “I fell short in wrestling. I took second in the country. I vowed to myself, the next thing I compete in I’m going to be the champion. I have to keep working until I get it. “I went to ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ and I told my coaches I will not lose in the finals again. If I get the opportunity where the belt’s on the line, I’m going to get it. That’s what I did at ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ and now I’m planning to do the same in UFC, keep chalking up these W’s and work my way to a title fight. And when I get there, I’m going to win.” Anderson had to be convinced to give mixed martial arts a try, but once he got hooked, he rose quickly to stardom. After he won The Ultimate Fighter 19 with the quickest knockout in TUF history—61 seconds—that reality show helped connect him to Robbinsville. “Ricardo Almeida, Frankie Edgar and Mark Henry, they all coached me on the reality TV show ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’” Anderson said. “After the show, they contacted me and said how they enjoyed working with me, and if I wanted to come train with them, I was more than welcome. They invited me out for a little bit of time to try it. As I came, I liked it. Every time I went back to Illinois, I would come back and bring a little more of Illinois with me. Before you knew it, I had my own place out here as well.” Henry, a New Jersey based strik-

ing coach, was impressed immediately by Anderson’s ability to listen and use his coaching. They clicked immediately, and when Edgar won the coin toss at TUF, Henry convinced Edgar to make Anderson his team’s first selection. Henry has continued to work with Anderson now that Anderson has moved to New Jersey. “It’s great to see Corey grow,” Henry said. “I appreciate how he’s grown as a person.” It’s been a big few years in the life of Anderson, who lives in Jackson now. He got married on Valentine’s Day 2018 to Jenny D’Acquisto, another MMA fighter who he met in the gym. They had their first child in March, which temporarily has put Anderson’s fight schedule on hold. “It’s more motivation,” Anderson said. “Nothing’s going to change. I’m still going to be the same. I’ll have the baby to care for, and I have to be there more for my wife, but all it is is more motivation. We make things happen, we’re going to make it work.” After some struggles in 2017, Anderson was unbeaten in all three of his 2018 fights. It’s something that he credits the training he’s done since coming to New Jersey and the coaching he has gotten. “The focus, the team, and the work I put in,” Anderson said. “When your team is with you and no matter what, everyone treats you the same… You see so many gyms where the guys lose and it’s like they’re not that important anymore. You don’t hear the coaches talking about them, you don’t see the coaches working with them as much. They get played out.

Let’s beat cancer together.

Corey “Overtime” Anderson is just one of the top UFC fighters to train in Robbinsville.

10Robbinsville Advance | April 2019

When you get a team like us, when I was losing, they helped me fix the things I was doing wrong. Once they fixed those things, it made a world of difference.” Said Henry: “He’s an amazing listener. He could listen and adjust to what we said. He’s a student of the game. Everything has definitely gotten better. Corey has always been good. His jiu jitsu and wrestling have gotten better. His wrestling was good, but his MMA wrestling was only OK. His MMA wrestling is way better and his jiu jitsu is really improved.” Among those that train at RABJJ Academy with Anderson are fighters like Marlon Moraes, the top-ranked contender in bantamweight, Edgar who is the No. 3 ranked contender in the featherweight division, and secondranked Sijari Eubanks and third-ranked women’s flyweight contender Katlyn Chookagian. “Everybody in our lineup is ranked in the Top 10 in UFC,” Anderson said. “We’re a small tight knit team, like a fam-

ily. We all push each other.” That’s been important to Anderson’s progress. He can’t afford to fall behind in the competitive UFC, and his training partners are vital. “Even though I’m the biggest one on the team, we have some 85’ers that come from other gyms that will hit with us,” Anderson said. “We have little guys, Frankie’s got a ton of guys his size, but everybody in our lineup out of Ricardo’s is in the rankings. If you’re in the UFC, you’re ranked right now. That’s because we all push, we’re only as strong as our weakest link, like they say. We make sure the next person is just as good as everybody so we get better together. If I’m getting with a training partner that’s a bum, I’m not helping him get better, and I’m not making myself any better so I’ll be stagnant.” Anderson also values his team of coaches that push him in a number of different disciplines. He’s not just working on one aspect of his fighting.

SPRINGTIME BRACES! Academy Dental is a warm, inviting SPA-themed dentist facility in Hamilton, and is rated as one of the best places by Hulafrog for dental treatment. Dr. Navleen Thind, D.D.S. is a trusted dentist who practices adults and kids’ dentistry, along with Dr. Steven Reff, Dr. Pankaj Puri (Orthodontist) and Dr. Gunjan Parmar. Today, Dr. Pankaj Puri (Orthodontist) is sharing his top secrets to help you live a life fully of happy, healthy and grateful dental experiences. Everyone loves to look beautiful and be appreciated for their looks. Braces or Invisalign treatment can give you and your family a very impressive, and happy smile for life. Spring time brings new and enhanced energy into our lives, and we look forward to execute our cherished goals we so much have been looking forward to. Feeling beautiful is a wonderful thing, it uplifts your self-esteem and creates a positive reinforcement of can-do attitude. Today, Dr. Puri (Orthodontist) provides his top 4 tips to getting started on your own journey to success, which is full of happiness, health and straight teeth for life. 1. FIRST THINGS FIRST: Orthodontic treatment is not only for children, adults also benefit from it tremendously by realigning their teeth. Invisalign is a great treatment to offer the benefits if you qualify, with the added advantage of cosmetically appealing clear braces which are suitable for work, as well as social situations. Children, on the other hand, start early in their school years, and sometimes as late as when in college. Dr. Pankaj Puri offers full comprehensive Orthodontic treatment for all ages, and is always looking forward to meet new families who need guidance on starting their journey for a healthy smile. 2. CONVENIENCE: Orthodontic treatment is often a long treatment spanning from one to two years, or in some cases a little more. Convenience is one of the main factors which patients look for when selecting a provider. Academy Dental is open 7 days a week for any dental emergencies, and is able to complement Dr. Pankaj Puri’s clinical hours every month with added

peace of mind of emergency coverage. Emergencies happen, and knowing you have someone who cares for you, and is available to provide assistance on most days – can help you achieve your goal with greater ease! When you head out of town this summer on vacation, keep your Orthodontist practice’s number handy, but also pack and emergency kit with you. Try to bring tweezers, nail clipper, and some orthodontic wax in order to help guide a loose wire should you need to. 3. KEEPING ON TRACK: Most important in any Braces or Invisalign treatment is to stay in touch! Staying in touch with your Orthodontist office for monthly appointment visits is critical to achieving long-lasting beautiful results. Most offices may call you or provide you with an appointment reminder so you can mark your calendars. Academy Dental has invested in automatic reminder systems which track your appointments schedule, and automatically keep you in the loop. You will never miss an appointment with us! Should emergencies happen, we keep track of your treatment plan, and reach out to you proactively so you can be back on your journey! When selecting your braces provider, it is important to also research their office scheduling and reminder systems, to ensure they are setup to care for your beautiful smile just the way you do! 4. THE SECRET: What if you could have braces that do not cost a fortune? Academy Dental loves their patients and has a program that makes the entire program accessible to everyone, including students to fund on their own! It starts with trust, and offering special payment plans that skip the traditional financing offers which come with higher interest charges. Direct payment to Academy Dental for your braces reduce all overheads, and most patients can access the entire braces treatment for under $6.16 a day. What’s even better? You choose your style – clear/Invisalign or traditional wire based braces. Call our office today and speak with our office manager about this great offer.

ANDERSON continued from Page 11 “Jiu Jitsu is with Ricardo,” he said. “Ricardo Almeida Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, that’s sort of who we represent. We have Nick Catone MMA in Brick; Mark Henry who’s a boxing coach out of Middletown; my Muay Thai coach is in Brick as well, he owns Driven up in Woodbridge. We have coaches from all over.” They come together to give him guidance, and Anderson has thrived in the high intensity atmosphere. He’s training constantly, maximizing his time spent in the gym. He also helps to train others on the side at Nick Catone’s. “That’s why I am and who I am and where I am because of the family environment there,” Anderson said. “You go to so many gyms and there are 100 to 1,000 people on the mat at a time. Big gyms, but you’re not getting the attention you need from different coaches and teammates and whatever help you need to grow. Every day you’re coming in and you’re sparring, and a bunch of guys on jiu jitsu mat are wrestling, but you don’t get that attention where a coach can actually see you doing something wrong and let you know what you need to change to fix it to be good at this move or to make this move happen. “At Ricardo’s we only have 20 people on the mat at a time, only 10 of them are fighters and only seven are in the UFC. When we have practices, it’s pretty even with our two or three coaches there to give everybody there a hand and help everybody out.” Anderson is just one of the fighters in Robbinsville who has benefitted from that culture. He’s part of a group that has climbed the UFC rankings together. “I think it’s great that Corey sees a lot of these people come in and they weren’t ranked,” Henry said. “They fight the best all of the time. It’s not like there’s anywhere to hide. It’s a testament to them. “Frankie is the main thing. Everyone sees his work ethic. Corey is just like him. Everybody has to follow suit. When someone like Frankie Edgar is your general, it makes everything easier.” Anderson spends as much as two hours on each discipline in a day. He does two or three styles each day, and makes sure that he does each discipline at least twice per week. Adding Almeida’s jiu jitsu training started him toward developing a new style of fighting for him. “It solidifies my game,” Anderson said. “Without his jiu jitsu, I wouldn’t be the Corey Anderson that everybody knows in the UFC. You can take that either way. Some guys say my fighting style is boring because I take guys down and maul them on the mat or ground and pound them and they don’t get up. But before I got here, I was the type to stand and bang. I had all finishes coming into the UFC. Granted, I only had three fights, but those were finishes where I just stood up

and punched guys, hit them hard. When I took them down, it wasn’t like jiu jitsu style, it was just get over top of them and hit them as hard as I can. “But I think Ricardo’s has been great because it’s helped me become more of a martial artist instead of just a stand and banger or a sprawl and brawler. Now I’m actually a technician. I can change everything around. I can strike with you, I can do kickboxing, or I can take you down and do jiu jitsu. I’m ready for everything.” Anderson is working his way toward a title shot with light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. He already had former title holder Alexander Gustafsson ask for a fight March 16, which was only days after his son Corey Jr. was due. “His style for Jones is great,” Henry said. “I think he’s a great matchup for Jon, if he fights the way he can. He’s never fought for a title for five rounds. Everybody is a little different the first time you fight for the title. I think he’s a great matchup for Jon. I hope he gets that fight.” Anderson has been using his time out of the Octagon since December to continue to develop in hopes of a title shot. “I’m a more complete fighter than before,” Anderson said. “Will I say I’m complete? No, I plan to grow. I plan to get 1 percent better every day and I’m going to get 1 percent better every day. The time I stop getting 1 percent better every day will be the time I walk away. If I feel like I’m not getting any better before I’m 31, I guess I’ll walk away then. But if I’m just getting better, I’ll leave on my own plan.” Anderson intends to fight another two years before moving on to the next phase of his life. He’d like to coach wrestling in college, preferably back in the Midwest. “Right now, everything is going according to plan,” Anderson said. “By the time [my son’s] talking and knowing what’s going on, I’ll be done and he won’t have to see his father get beat up or come home all bashed up so I can play catch and travel with my son and be at his matches and not worry about being in the gym and missing important dates.” Anderson still has some big goals ahead of him, but he’s been happy with the results of his time spent in Robbinsville. He’s in the middle of an exciting time. He’s starting a family, rising in the rankings, starring as one of the profiles in the YouTube series ‘Anatomy of a Fighter,’ and taking advantage of the perfect environment to reach his goals. “I’m here for the training,” Anderson said. “That’s my main focus. I’ve been training out here for four years. I haven’t seen Central Park, I haven’t really been in Times Square of Manhattan. I’m here for one reason: training and getting a belt.” And maybe when the mood strikes him, a good bowl of soup.

FARM continued from Page 1 necessary resources precisely,” says Clement, highlighting how the farm’s technology prevents wasting resources— such as overuse of water or electricity—as it achieves the plants’ near perfect growth. Once the plants are harvested, Mercer Street Friends Food Bank distributes heads of lettuce—the farm’s staple crop—to children who are facing “food insecurity” in various school districts in Mercer County every week. This year, the farm began bagging spring mix salads for the students, too. When the township purchased the container, it already had Mercer Street Friends Food Bank and its recipients in mind. Clement and Robbinsville Township recreation manager Kevin Holt met with MSF in early 2018 to show them what they had grown and make their partnership official. With the indoor farming solution, children in need can look forward to getting their hands on leafy greens year round. Even better, it’s living lettuce. So people can harvest and replant it and it’ll regrow, says Clement. Some of their recipients have set up window gardens and have gotten multiple harvests from one head of lettuce. Crops are also distributed to senior citizens. Seniors at the town’s senior center are involved in the farm’s growing process from start to finish. They have a hand in everything—from planting the seeds to packaging the fiveounce spring salad mix bags. The community’s response to the hydroponic farm has been overwhelm-

ingly positive. The farm currently has over two dozen trained volunteers on rotation to help maintain its crops. This month, Robbinsville Township Mayor Dave Fried will officially recognize the partnership between the farm and food bank, a project he’s been passionate about since day one. The proceeds from Fried’s State of the Township address will go to Mercer Street Friends Food Bank and its Send Hunger Packing program. The annual State of Robbinsville Township “Pay it Forward” event will be held at The Stone Terrace by John Henry’s on Tuesday, April 30. Meanwhile, the green and white container continues to introduce students to a new take on farming with modern technology through tours and educational workshops, offering opportunities for STEM students and those interested in farming. Just a few months ago, the entire fourth grade class of Sharon Elementary School—around 250 students—toured the farm over the span of five days. Clement says kids are responsive to the tours. “They just light up,” Clement said. Together, Clement and Robbinsville Township officials continue to build connections between organizations and join people together in the battle against hunger. Is there another hydroponic farming container in the future? It’s likely, Clement said. “The farm has already achieved everything we set out for it to do,” he said. “Now it’s about doubling down, expanding, and involving more people in order to give more.”

FOOD & DINING

Soul food meets teriyaki at J&C By Joe Emanski

jemanski@communitynews.org

One day recently a colleague, Dan Aubrey, brought me a menu from a place from which he had just picked up lunch: J&C Teriyaki in Ewing. I only had to look at the menu for a minute to know that it was someplace I wanted to try. J&C Teriyaki is a tiny take-out shop in a tiny, seven-shop strip mall on Parkside Avenue, just off South Olden Avenue. The Chinese-owned restaurant, opened by John Yang in 2010, has an unusual menu: a mix of Southern-style soul food and Japanese teppanyaki. The first thing you see when you walk in is a huge stack of Member’s Mark creamy liquid shortening. It’s not the kind of place that worries about atmosphere. Nor are there any tables. J&C Teriyaki is take-out only, as is its sister restaurant, J&C Fish Market and Soul Food, which has been down the street from Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton for almost 20 years. The majority of the menu at both restaurants is soul food. There’s seafood like fried fish (croaker, whiting, porgy, catfish, flounder, ling cod and tilapia), steamed and fried shrimp, grilled

salmon, scallops, clam strips and crab sticks. There’s also fried chicken, baked chicken and chicken gizzards, pork chops fried or with gravy, stewed chicken, stewed beef, short ribs and oxtails (BBQ or smothered in gravy), and BBQ ribs. Sides are familiar to devotees of soul food: collard greens, blackeyed peas, macaroni and cheese, string beans, candied yam, cabbage, lima beans and buttered corn. Most items can be ordered as sandwiches (regular or large), regular platter (with french fries and cole slaw) or dinner platter (includes two sides and a hunk of corn bread). Sandwiches range in price from $4.70 to $7.55. Regular platters range from $4.85 for fried chicken leg and thigh to $10.85 for short ribs and oxtail. The most expensive thing on the

entire menu, excluding catering options, is $12.95 for the oxtail and short rib dinner platters. At J&C Teriyaki, but not J&C Fish Market, you can also choose from among 14 hibachi options: chicken, squid, white fish, shrimp, tilapia, salmon, plus combinations of the above. Although there’s no showmanship in the presentation a la hibachi restaurants, the kitchen at J&C is open and you can watch your food being made. Teppanyaki comes with steamed or hibachi rice and vegetables, and range in price from $6.55 for chicken to $11.45 for steak and shrimp $13.45 for a 12 ounce portion of steak. Desserts are also available include banana pudding, sweet potato pie, peach cobber, carrot cake and cheesecake. I stopped into J&C Teriyaki one day last month to give some of their most

popular dishes a try. I ordered a fried chicken mix (drumstick, thigh, wing, breast) with fries ($6.15) as well as hibachi chicken. I also got sides of collards and black-eyed peas ($2.45 small, $3.75 large). I rarely order fried chicken. Well prepared, it is one of the most delicious things in the world, but it is all too easy to get wrong. I’ve had my share of underdone, overdone, overbreaded, underseasoned and greasy chicken where the breading slides right off, leaving behind a defenseless breast or thigh. It begins to degrade the minute it comes out of the fryer, and too many times I have been served chicken that clearly had past its prime. None of that was an issue at J&C. The chicken was fried just right, without a hint of uncooked flour and reasonably oily. The crispy, salty batter lacks any cayenne zing but is good, and the seasoning carried into the chicken nicely. The meaty breast, so often dry and stringy, was juicy and delicious; the slightly dry leg pieces were also good, and the wing very good. The sides were also good. Colleague Vaughan Burton, who grew up in the South, says the porky collards compare

Hibachi shrimp and steak at J&C Teriyaki in Ewing. (File photo by Diccon Hyatt.) favorably to the food he grew up with, and says the black-eyed peas were outstanding as well, though they could have had more meat flavor (like his mom’s). French fries were garden variety fries, filling but not noteworthy. The cole slaw is sweet enough to be considered a dessert.

The teppanyaki chicken, prepared on a flat-top grill rather than a hibachi, was also good, and particularly, good value for the money. Big strips of slightly sweet, teriyaki-flavored chicken came over white rice, accompanied by unseasoned sauteed vegetables including zucchini, broccoli and bok choy. The container weighed in at just over 2 pounds. The next day I stopped in to J&C Fish Market and Soul Food to sample a few more of the entrees. I ordered the fried whiting and catfish dinner combo with sides of candied yam and macaroni and cheese, ($10.10), as well as a regular platter of short ribs and gravy with fries ($10.85). The fish came in decent-sized fillets, breaded in salty corn meal. We would have liked to see the fish a deeper golden brown, with a crunchier texture. Vaughan preferred the catfish to the whiting. Though there was a hint of fishy smell on both, the flavor was quite mild and indistinct. The short ribs were perhaps the home run of the entire smörgåsbord. They tasted the way I want them to come out when I make them, well stewed and tender, with a heavy, clingy gravy. The macaroni and cheese was good, made with real cheese and not a processed cheese sauce, and the plentiful candied yams were like pie filling. Although I did not order it, Vaughan also put in a good word for J&C’s banana pudding, which he has had. He says the thinly sliced bananas and vanilla wafers on a vanilla-flavored pudding are tasty. The bottom line is that both J&C’s offer tremendous value for money. What the food lacks in spectacle, it makes up for by being plentiful and filling. If soul food is what you’re in the mood for, it’s worth going out of the way to pick something up. And if you can’t make it to your favorite hibachi place, J&C Teriyaki might be the best way to scratch that itch. J&C Teriyaki, 1429 Parkside Ave., Ewing, (609) 4038956; and J&C Fish Market and Soul Food, 1469 Nottingham Way, Hamilton, (609) 631-8899.

Bilgrav wills way top of state wrestling ranks By Rich Fisher In January 2017, after just winning his 100th match in a dual meet at Steinert, Logan Fox had this to say about thensophomore Garrett Bilgrav: “Garrett’s got insane potential. I can’t say enough good things about him. That kid’s going to be insanely talented this year, next year and senior year. Look out.” Fox’s forecast was anything but insane and it meant the world to Bilgrav, who grew up admiring numerous Raven wrestling standouts. “It was after the Steinert match; I remember that vividly,” he said. “He’s a great kid, I always looked up to him. He was a great mentor for me throughout my career when I was wrestling. It was really wonderful when he said that. I owe a little to him. He really did help me out. That’s all it takes, is one person to believe in you.” He made believers of everyone before it was all over. After finally placing in the NJSIAA State Championships—taking 7th place after two years of near-misses—the Columbia University-bound senior stamped himself as one of the greatest wrestlers in Robbinsville High School history.

Robbinsville High senior Garrett Bilgrav (pictured front center) turned athletic and academic success into a spot at Columbia University. Pictured are (back) coach Brian Dempsey, head coach Sean Flynn, coach Dan Hughes, (front) dad Paul Bilgrav, Garrett Bilgrav and mom Brooke Bilgrav. His 145 career wins set the all-time mark in Mercer County. H also has RHS single-season records in team points (249), pins (29) and takedowns (94); and career marks in team points (757),

pins (81), technical falls (12), takedowns (293) and near falls (146). He was a three-time district champion, a two-time region winner (and three-time finalist) and three-time state qualifier.

In addition, he represented his school and team with class and dignity. “He’s the guy that’s done everything the right way,” third-year Ravens coach Sean Flynn said. “He’s what we want the kids in our program to be like. He’s an outstanding student, took all AP and honors classes. He has an outstanding GPA, he does the right thing in school. His teachers have high praise for him, his work ethic. And it’s the same thing in the wrestling room. He does everything we ask him to do, he’s a leader on and off the mat. Obviously his wrestling credentials speak for themselves.” Bilgrav’s final appearance on the state stage resulted in mixed emotions. On one hand, he was seeded third at 170 pounds and finished eighth in Atlantic City. On the bright side, he had come within one win of placing the previous two years and finally got to ascend the podium despite being stunned by Camden Catholic’s 14th-seeded Martin Cosgrove in the second round. It would have been easy to pack it in, but Bilgrav regrouped. “He could have gone right in the tank and feel sorry for himself,” Flynn said. “Obviously he was disappointed. But he had a night to sleep on it, came back the next day and went to work. He showed

New Robbinsville High School baseball head coach Mike Kinsella (front) comes to the Ravens after stints coaching at Raritan and Freehold Township. added that his predecessor will never force advice on him. “He’s already gone above and beyond in trying to help me; he said, ‘I’ll give my opinion if you ask for it but I’m not going to just give it to you,’” Kinsella said. “Tom has been an awesome mentor for me. He loves Robbinsville High School. He wants the same thing I want. He knew it was his time, and this is the best case scenario for everybody. He’s in a role to help us without having to invest

everything in it, and he can then kind of sit back and watch.” After being hired, one of Kinsella’s first moves was to have one-on-one conversations with every player. He asked them how things had been going for them up to this point, and where they would like to see the program go. He then gave his philosophy, which is to emphasize pitchers throwing strikes and fielders making the plays. “Those talks went well,” he said. “They took ownership of last season, and they all stressed the idea they’re embracing a fresh start. They’re taking it as this year is a new year. Last year doesn’t matter, the years before don’t matter. They’re absorbing everything I’m teaching. Everything is new. Baseball’s not new but my verbiage and my way of doing things is brand new. They’re doing a great job of being a sponge and soaking it in. “Baseball is baseball, it’s really up to them. People teach and coach pretty much the same stuff. It’s all about what the kids put into it and what they demand of themselves. I’m a big character guy. I’m not a screamer, I’m not a yeller, I don’t make them run if they disappoint me. I’m more like, ‘What’s the lesson here?’ and ‘This is why we’re doing what we do.’” Kinsella’s assistants are Jeff Fisher and Jerry Chmielewski, while Washington joins the staff. The coaches and players all have the same goal in mind. “Our motto is ‘One of six,’” Kinsella said. “We want to be one of the six group state champions at the end of the year.”

Getting Healthy is a Walk in the Park The Health Benefits of Walking According to the National Institutes for Health, just 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic activity per week will help most adults stay healthy. For many, deciding on a fitness program and finding the time to exercise can stop the most well-meaning person in their tracks. Luckily, getting on the path to better health can literally be as easy as a walk in the park. “Walking has a low risk of injury and you don’t need any memberships, special equipment or training to get started,” said DR. JILL YOUNG, a board certified physician at Capital Health Primary Care – Quakerbridge. “Most people don’t need to see a doctor before they begin a walking program, but if you have a chronic health issue or you’re over age 40 and have been inactive for a while, check with your primary care doctor to establish a fitness routine that’s safe for you.” In addition to seeing patients at Capital Health’s primary care office in Lawrenceville, NJ, Dr. Young is a trustee of the 22-mile Lawrence Hopewell Trail, a non-profit that provides communities in Hopewell and Lawrence Townships a safe environment for walking, jogging, and biking.

A brisk walk 30 minutes a day, five days a week will help you burn calories, strengthen your muscles and bones, and can lower your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. If you have a tight schedule to work around, Dr. Young suggests breaking your walks into three 10-minute sessions per day to enjoy the same benefits, all of which improve your overall fitness and lift your mood along the way. Whether it’s scheduling a wellness check-up or you’re just not feeling well, Capital Health understands that advanced medicine starts with your primary care doctor. If you don’t already have a primary care provider, Capital Health’s Primary Care Network offers convenient offices throughout the greater Mercer, Bucks and Burlington county region.

DOCS ON THE TRAIL: Enjoying the Outdoors While Managing Your Joint Pain If you’re living with arthritis or considering joint replacement surgery, join DR. ARJUN SAXENA from Trenton Orthopaedic Group at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute to learn how walking or biking can help you manage your pain and even help you recover from surgery. This will be followed by a two-mile hike into Rosedale Park led by DR. JILL YOUNG, a board certified family medicine physician at Capital Health Primary Care – Quakerbridge and trustee of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail. Tuesday, April 30, 2019 | 6 p.m. Hunt House Barn, Mercer Meadows 197 Blackwell Road, Pennington, NJ 08534. THIS EVENT IS FREE.

DON’T LOSE SLEEP OVER DAYLIGHT SAVINGS BASIC TIPS FOR A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP Daylight savings time may be a welcome sign of spring and the long summer nights to come, but the “lost hour” can have short-term effects on your normal sleeping patterns. “When you ‘spring forward’ and advance your clocks an hour, the change disrupts your sleep pattern and causes your body clock to become out of sync with the daylightnighttime cycle,” said DR. CALLUM DUPRE, board certified neurologist, fellowship trained sleep medicine specialist, and medical director of the Capital Health Center for Sleep Medicine. “If you’re a night owl, the switch to daylight savings time could have a more noticeable impact.” Your best defense against the disruption caused by the time change is maintaining a consistent sleep routine. Instead of altering your schedule to compensate for the hour of sleep you lose, select a bedtime ritual, such as a warm bath, listening to calm music or reading a book. After you make it through the time change, sticking to a routine year round

OTHER TIPS INCLUDE:

… Create a relaxing bedroom. ∙∙ Remove work materials, computers and televisions. ∙∙ Keep it quiet, dark and cool. … Reduce or eliminate caffeine, nicotine and alcohol intake. … If you can't sleep, try relaxing in another room until you feel tired. … Exercise regularly but not close to bedtime.

will go a long way in improving your quality of sleep and reducing your risk of illness and chronic health problems. If you or your family is having sleep-related problems, contact the Capital Health Center for Sleep Medicine. As the largest, fully accredited center in Mercer and Bucks counties, the Center has provided comprehensive evaluation and treatment for sleep disorders in adults and children for more than 20 years. On December 19, President & CEO Al Maghazehe and other members of Capital Health’s senior management team joined the CAPITAL HEALTH AUXILIARY for a ribbon-cutting ceremony (pictured right) that marked the grand opening of Capital Thrift, the Auxiliary’s new thrift store located at 2783 Brunswick Pike (Rt. 1 South), Lawrenceville, NJ. The Mercer Mart thrift store, which celebrated its grand opening in 1958, (pictured left) opened on West Hanover Street in Trenton before moving to Front Street until it closed in 2004. Like the Mercer Mart, Capital Thrift is completely staffed and managed by volunteers, and proceeds help the Auxiliary sponsor health and educational programs for patients at Capital Health.

Volunteer Spirit is alive and well at CAPITAL THRIFT In December 2018, the Capital Health Auxiliary celebrated the grand opening of Capital Thrift, a thrift shop in Lawrenceville, NJ that benefits health and educational programs at Capital Health. Although the store is new, the community spirit that drives this effort can trace its roots back to 1958 and an enterprise known as Mercer Mart, Capital Health’s original thrift shop. “Mercer Mart was a mainstay in the city of Trenton for 46 years until its closing in 2004,” said Donna Costanzo, president of the Capital Health Auxiliary. “Inspired by the dedication of the original founders and volunteers at the Mart—many of whom helped run the store from start to finish—we look forward to improving the community and continuing to support the many great programs at Capital Health.” Capital Thrift is located at 2783 Brunswick Pike (Rt. 1 South) in Lawrenceville, NJ. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday; 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month; and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Purchases may be made with cash or credit card (Visa & Master Cards only—no debit cards). Donations may be dropped off during store hours. For more information, call 609-882-4717 or search for Capital Thrift NJ on Facebook. 30Robbinsville Advance | Health Headlines by Capital Health

Advanced Screening and Early Treatment helps prevent esophageal cancer Heartburn and acid reflux are common conditions, but if you’re experiencing chronic symptoms, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Left untreated, GERD can cause damage to the lining of the esophagus and lead to Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition that is estimated to affect more than 12 million adults in the United States. In a more severe form of Barrett’s, the lining of the esophagus also contains dysplasia (cells that are turning into cancer). “Barrett’s esophagus commonly goes undiagnosed and can lead to esophageal cancer, making it a potentially life-threatening condition of the digestive system,” said DR. JASON ROGART, director of Interventional Gastroenterology & Therapeutic Endoscopy at Capital Health. “With the advanced screening options available at our Center for Digestive Health, we work to identify Barrett’s in its earliest stages. Our goal is to identify disease progression early, when it can be treated endoscopically, without the need for surgery.” Dr. Rogart leads the Barrett’s esophagus and GERD Program at the Capital Health Center for Digestive Health, which offers these advanced screening, diagnostic and treatment options: High-definition endoscopy with narrow band imaging: Detailed imaging further enhanced by a special filter that focuses light to specific wavelengths for greater image contrast and clarity. Video Laser Endomicroscopy (VLE): High-resolution, crosssectional imaging of the outermost lining of the esophagus. Studies show this to have greater than 98 percent accuracy in detecting Barrett’s. Our experienced team at Capital Health was the first in New Jersey to offer VLE. WATS3D (wide-area transepithelial sampling with 3D computer analysis): A brush biopsy technique that can detect Barrett’s and increase the detection of cells that are turning into cancer. Molecular/DNA analysis of Barrett’s esophagus: Tissue samples collected via endoscopy are tested for the presence of biomarkers that may indicate a higher risk of progression to cancer before the development of invasive tumors. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): Special scopes with small ultrasound probes at the tip are inserted into the esophagus to examine nodules that may arise within Barrett’s esophagus. If the nodules contain cancer or if there are abnormal lymph nodes outside the esophagus, they can be sampled under EUS-guidance with fine needle aspiration. Bravo™ pH probe: Via endoscopy, a small capsule is temporarily attached to the wall of the esophagus to measure pH levels, record GERD symptoms, and transmit readings to a small wireless receiver you wear on your waistband.

24 hour pH testing with impedance and esophageal manometry: A thin catheter is passed through the nose into the esophagus to measure whether acid or non-acid contents from the stomach are refluxing into the esophgaus. The pattern of muscle contraction within the esophagus can also be checked for abnormalities. Stretta anti-reflux endoscopic therapy: An endoscopic alternative to medical or surgical treatment of GERD, this is a safe and effective minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that is typically performed in less than 60 minutes on an outpatient (same-day) basis. It has been shown to significantly reduce and even eliminate GERD symptoms, such as heartburn, by reducing esophageal acid exposure. Our experienced team at Capital Health was the first in New Jersey to offer Stretta. Capital Health Center for Digestive Health is advancing the level of care available to patients in the region by providing comprehensive, state-of-the art diagnostics and treatments for a wide range of medical conditions involving the entire digestive system, all in one location at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell. thecrookedtail.com 34Robbinsville Advance | April 2019

As citizens of this great country, we understand that we have a responsibility to thoughtfully and actively participate in our democracy as we work to uphold the values and principles it purports to represent. This is our civic duty. Although we know that these duties are voluntary, that we have a choice about how we might wish to participate, each of us has the good fortune of being able to contribute to the greater good. This may mean exercising our right to vote, staying informed on local, state and national issues or by making a commitment to give service to others. As a school district, we teach civic responsibility to students in order to create responsible citizens and active participants in our community and our government. In fact, one of the six Robbinsville Ready Skills identifies the characteristics of an informed and involved citizen this way: In order to be civically and globally aware, students must not only understand the role of government and its impact on local and state communities but also to respect and appreciate different cultures and differences of others that make up the school community and beyond. As teachers nurture and support students to become informed and involved citizens through the study of government, they also help students to develop as citizens by building experiences that incorporate cross-cultural connections and relationships with others to contemplate and solve problems; encourage opportunities to strengthen independent thought and express opinions respectfully; and design instruction to meet a variety of purposes including understanding and addressing complex issues. While we can appreciate the value of our civic duties as citizens in a democracy, what about our civil duty? How do we engage in civil behavior that will lead us to operate in good faith and promote civil solutions to problems? According to dictionary.com, the word civility is derived from the Latin root, civilitat which means “relating to public life, befitting a citizen.” It is defined as “the act of showing regard for others.” The fundamental premise of this definition addresses the value of politeness and good manners. Is it just me or do you, too, often wonder just when—and how— basic good manners became seemingly obsolete? Are you, too, pleasantly surprised when you notice someone opening a door for another person, saying please and thank you to the Starbucks barista, or allowing another car to take the coveted parking spot at the local mall? Sadly, these examples of polite behavior are becoming more and more antiquated. I could speculate that our hurried and harried world has contributed to the demise of basic manners as we rush from

one “important” appointment to the next. Our demanding and stressful schedules surely take a toll and often leave us shorttempered and self-absorbed. Whether we cut another driver off or convey a harsher, more sarcastic tone than we might have actually meant, we know on a deeper level that we are better than this. And yet it is all too easy to get caught in the heat of the moment. Our addiction to technology has also led us to ignore common courtesy and our compassion for one another. We talk on our cell phones with little regard to others that may be present, we distractedly text over dinner and during a work meeting, or we no longer take the time to greet people as we write an email. Without oversimplifying the problem, when we no longer mind our p’s and q’s, bad habits like these can lead to more serious behaviors (such as bullying and intolerance of others) and contribute to the decline of civility in our society. Civility, however, encompasses more than being polite and demonstrating good manners. Civility can lead to a healthier and more caring community. But what does this look like beyond practicing good manners? One way might be to practice active listening. Instead of preparing mental counterarguments while issues are being discussed, we can practice developing a sense of curiosity about differing points of view. We can raise questions in ways that seek to understand rather than becoming defensive. When we are in reactive mode, it’s easy to lose perspective and take things personally but when we make a conscious effort to slow down, we are better able to be present and bring our better selves to each situation and interaction. In the classroom, teachers can begin to teach civility. As they activate student voice through the process of inquiry, choice, and regular discussions, students begin to develop a deeper conceptual understanding of the area of study. This, then, can open opportunities for students with differing points of view to appreciate multiple perspectives and to practice civil discourse in a safe and structured environment. Making intentional efforts to take each student’s opinions into account in a dispassionate and nonreactive way leads to a sense of agency which then leads to a strong, resilient and more civil community of learners. Today we live in a world comprised of more than seven billion people that speak more than seven thousand languages. As we embrace the tenets of our democracy and interact with others on the global stage with increasing frequency, it is incumbent upon us to model for and teach our children to uphold their civic responsibilities and civil duty as though it matters. After all, when we envision the kind of world we want to create for future generations, it does. Kathie Foster is superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

MAYOR’S COLUMN

Township stands on cutting edge of local governing By Dave Fried In Robbinsville, we have never been afraid of big, scary goals. There is a burden that comes along with consolidating a fire district, eliminating lifetime health insurance for valued public employees and being the first town to take over an MUA (Municipal Utilities Authority). There are certain stresses that come with asking your taxpayers to raise taxes on themselves for the betterment of the community in the form of preserving more open space, and there are sleepless nights when talking about enforcing eminent domain for the public good. From being the first municipality to purchase and convert a shipping container into a fully functional and sustainable Hydroponics Farm capable of producing hundreds of heads of lettuce and other healthy greens per month, to unveiling a ground-breaking opioid intervention (C.A.R.E.) program, where the first priority is rehabilitation not prison, I am proud to say Robbinsville Township stands on the cutting edge of local governing because we are not afraid to try. More on all of that April 30 at the 2019

State of Robbinsville Township Address and Pay it Forward event, which will be held at The Stone Terrace by John Henry to benefit Mercer Street Friends Food Bank of Ewing. The really big news last month was reaching the homestretch regarding the former Miry Run Country Club, which the township now formally owns following a declaration of taking filed in New Jersey Superior Court March 15. Attorneys for the township delivered a check for the appraised value of $1.34 million to obtain title to the 158.5 acre property. Three commissioners appointed by Superior Court Judge Mary C. Jacobson are now tasked with providing a report to the court by July 15, 2019 and will set the final valuation of the parcel comprised of Block 28, Lots 14, 16, 51, 53 and parts of Lots 7, 11 and 13 as shown on our official tax maps. The TrentonRobbinsville Airport is not part of the acquisition. The property will be used for passive recreation and added to the township’s considerable open space inventory of over 1,500 acres preserved since 2000. Mercer County has pledged to help us with the final cost of obtaining Miry Run,

and for that we are extremely grateful. We hope to have more good news to announce regarding the Mercer Mobile Home Park and this year’s municipal tax rate at the SOTT April 30, but as we look ahead to the 2020 budget, I am thrilled to report we have another 1 million square feet of commercial ratables coming online in the Matrix Business Park. With close to 8 million square feet of leased warehouse space valued at approximately $250 million, it becomes a bit easier for the public to understand how we have been able to stabilize taxes for seven straight years. *** Speaking of C.A.R.E., we will be host-

ing a “Knock Out Opioid Abuse” Town Hall at the Senior Center in coordination with the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey on April 9 from 7-9 p.m. The series will focus on the issue of prescription drug dependency and heroin abuse, including collaboration from local prevention and treatment organizations, as well as local and county law enforcement, government and medical community leaders. Robbinsville and surrounding area residents are invited to join the conversation to discuss new information and the latest issues surrounding this crisis. Dave Fried is the Mayor of Robbinsville Township.
