Celebration of dance Sinfonietta Nova closes its season of dance-themed performances

Former township committee member named head of Guarini Institute

By ROss AMiCO As the orchestra tunes for its final concert of the season, Sinfonietta Nova’s dance card is nearly full. The West Windsor-based community ensemble is about to conclude its 2018-19 series devoted to dance with a concert on Latin American themes. The program, “Shall We Dance?” will be presented on Saturday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the orchestra’s home, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Tickets are $10 to $18. For more information, go to sinfoniettanova.org. Characteristic of the orchestra’s music director, Gail HsuiWen Lee, is her practice of working with an overarching theme for the season. “I always like to have a theme to program around,” she says, “and I select music that is not ordinary. So you don’t go to the concert and hear the same thing over and over again. It started early on with a theme per concert, but I found there’s so much music for a lot of these themes that I just expanded it to the entire season.” Lee says she understands her unique position as an ambassador of unusual repertoire, frequently written by composers most professional orchestras would not touch, with names that have not necessarily been at the top of the classical music See SINFONIETTA, Page 12

Plainsboro will celebrate its 100th birthday this Founders Day on Sunday, May 5, with the reopening and rededication of the historic Wicoff House on the municipal site. The house, which will be used as a museum of township history, was the subject of a recently completed $1 million

dollar renovation. Founder’s Day is the annual celebration—now in it’s 40th year—of the incorporation of the township on May 6, 1919. This year’s festivities start at 12:30 p.m. with a parade from Edgemere Avenue to the municipal complex on Plainsboro Road. The celebration is set to end at 4:30 p.m. The event features amusement rides, inflatables, crafts, food and music. The Wicoff House ceremony, which is set to start at about 1 p.m., is one of the centerpieces of the township’s year-long centennial celebration in 2019. Officials expected to be in

attendance include Gov. Phil Murphy, U.S. Senator Bonnie Watson Coleman an state Senator Linda Greenstein (a Plainsboro resident) and county and township officials. The house was built by the Wicoff family in the late 1870s and was eventually purchased by the township about a 100 years later. Mayor Peter Cantu, who will speak at the reopening, was involved in the negotiations to purchase the house and surrounding 18.5 acres of land in 1977. “We were able to buy the property at a very, very resonSee WICOFF, Page 8

Usually the first day of a new job means unpacking, meeting coworkers and trying to distinguish up from down. But Ginger Schnitzer—former Plainsboro Township committeewoman, vice-chair of the zoning board and president of the Public Library Foundation— was greeted on her first day as executive director of the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership at Saint Peter’s University with a snowstorm and a two-hour delay. That same day, March 4, Guarini was scheduled to host a Model UN conference for 425 high school students. A trial by fire, yes, but Schnitzer came to her new position well prepared and they managed to carry off the event. The Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership was established in 1994 by Congressman Frank Guarini and aims to provide a non-partisan forum for discussion of key public policy issues. The Institute sponsors lectures and programs throughout the academic year to promote critical thinking, debate and careers in public service. WICOFF continued from Page 1 able price,” he said. “I think it was for something in the $300,000s, which was a hell of a deal.” The property was purchased from a developer who had been sold the property by the Wicoff family. “When we bought the house, the Wicoff family was very excited about seeing it preserved and they paid for some renovations,” Cantu said. “It was painted and a few other things were done.” The township used the house as its municipal administration building from 1979 until 1995, when the current town hall was built. After that, the Plainsboro Historical Society used the building as a museum for a short time. The building was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. “God bless them, they were nice people (the Historical Society), but they thought everything was historical and they crammed the place with every imaginable thing,” Cantu said. “And the operation was not terribly well run, in my opinion.” Ultimately the Historical Society disbanded and the township assumed control of the building and decided to make much-needed repairs and updates to the facility and reopen the museum. The township obtained about $750,000 in grant money from the state and the county to restore the building. Including the township’s contribution, the cost of the renovations was about $1 million, Cantu said. The township also hired a consulting firm to evaluate the collection that the Historical Society had amassed and determined which of the items were important to the township’s history and worth keeping. “In addition, there was an architectural firm hired as part of the renovation project and everything there is first class now,” Cantu said. According to Township Administrator Anthony Cancro, who oversaw the project, the renovations included installation of a new HVAC system and electrical wiring. All the rooms were painted and the wood floors were restored.

The Wicoff House on the Plainsboro municipal site will be officially reopened on Founder’s Day, Sunday, May 5, following a $1 million renovation. (Staff photo by Bill Sanser vino.) Display cases have been installed in a number of the rooms in the house’s first floor to showcase historical items and works by local artists adorns the walls. Two of the rooms on the first floor are planned to be used as classrooms, Cancro said. The township has hired a part-time museum specialist, Kate Nolan, to help manage the collection and the facility. Cancro said there were a number of applicants seeking the position, and that Nolan was hired from a list of four highly-qualified finalists. The township is exploring the possibility of renting out the building’s second floor as an commercial office to help defray the cost of running the facility. “I would think its idea for a nonprofit, small accounting firm or something like that,” Cantu said. “I think we’re focused on a small business without a lot of foot traffic.” The building will also feature a large graphic designed as part of the township’s centennial to be permanently installed on one of the first-floor walls. The graphic traces the township’s history in both words and pictures, Cantu said.

ber of the governing body until 2007, Schnitzer served with Cantu, who she describes as a “brilliant, thoughtful leader” and “a planner.” Schnitzer also served as vice chair of the zoning board from 1996 to 2000, library trustee from 2000 to 2008, and president of the library foundation from 2008 to 2010. Looking back over her career thus far, Schnitzer discerns a definite path that led her to the Guarini Institute. At Nancy Becker, where she got her start, she was the “back-of-the-house person” who did research and wrote amendments and policy memos. Schnitzer says, “I used to think that I could know everything I needed to know if I read every document carefully and researched all citations; then I would know how to make a bill of law.” And when she started to lobby, she says, “I thought I could really impact public policy if I built relationships.” At NJEA she learned that “to make a difference, it is the people that spend their time spreading the message [who do that].” And she learned how to organize this human energy. At the victory party following her election to the township committee, she remembers standing on a staircase preparing to make her victory speech. “I was looking at the sea of people gathered, and I could see that these are the people who wrote a $25 check for my campaign, went to the law office to make phone calls in phone banks, put signs on lawns, and put our literature on their neighbors’ doorsteps.” At that moment she realized that Bill

Bradley was not just a “nice, cool, generous guy,” but he was telling her the truth that day on the escalator: “In this country the only way we elect anyone to anything—dogcatcher, school board member, or president of the United States—is when people take the time to do those little, individual actions. It’s the only way we change public policy.” Schnitzer has been married for 16 years to Jay Schnitzer. Their daughter Miki was born in August 2007, close to the time that she became director of government relations at NJEA. When she had used up her 11 weeks of maternity leave, Jay quit his job as a project engineer for Johnson Controls in Edison to become a stay-at-home dad. Now that Miki is a sixth grader at Thomas Grover Middle School, he works three days a week as a baker at Griggstown Farm, making breads, cookies and turnovers. He also owns Abba Jay’s Bakery, where he bakes challah and cookies, and Passover desserts. Miki currently plans to be a constitutional lawyer, and she is very passionate about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After 25 years of research, relationship-building, organizing, making policy in her own town, and “putting people you believe in on the ballot,” Schnitzer has found her way to the logical next step, the Guarini Institute. Her mentor and professor at the Eagleton Institute, Dr. Alan Rosenthal, used to tell her that “democracy was messy and human,” and she now realizes that “if you really want to impact public policy, you go prepare humans to do the work.”

Sinfonietta Nova music director Gail Hsui-Wen Lee conducts the orchestra during a recent performance. cal, Lee, who was born in Taiwan, says she received her first lessons from her grandfather. He studied in Japan and was an assistant to Shinichi Suzuki, creator of the Suzuki Method. She excelled in math and entered college with a love of physics and a passion for astronomy. But by then she had been in the U.S. for only two years and had trouble keeping up with the reading. Also, it was a time before many people had personal computers in their homes. “We had to go to the lab at school to do homework, projects, et cetera, and you sometimes had to wait in line to use the terminal,” she says. “I remember one night I was at the lab until 2 o’clock in the morning, and I finally had enough. Very soon after that, I decided that I’d rather spend that much time in the practice room than lab.” She completed her undergraduate music studies at Rutgers University, and then went on to earn her Masters in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University. Past positions have included artistic director and conductor of the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra. Lee has conducted the North Hungarian Symphony Orchestra; the Filharmonie Hradec Kralove, the Janacek Filharmonie Ostrava, and the Silesian Opera Theatre Orchestra (all three in the Czech Republic); and the Varna State Philharmonie (in Bulgaria); as well as

Kaohsuing City Symphony in Taiwan and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, with which she served as associate conductor. In the U.S., she has conducted Seattle Symphony and the Women’s Philharmonic, a San Francisco-based orchestra that was founded to champion the works of female composers. As an educator, Lee has taught at Alfred University and Cairn University. She has conducted the orchestras at both schools. She has served as a lecturer at Rutger’s Mason Gross School of the Arts and conducted the Rutgers University Sinfonia and Opera at Rutgers. Lee made steps toward her dream of founding a community orchestra in West Windsor in 2001, but it wasn’t until 2008 that she presented Sinfonietta Nova’s inaugural season. “I had no money,” she says. “I was funding it myself, and I was trying to get backers. All the logistical stuff, the paperwork, it all takes time. And I was working, too. I was employed elsewhere, I was teaching, I was doing church groups. I worked at it when I had time to do it, which is why it took so long. I didn’t want to start something that wouldn’t work, or wouldn’t last.” She also points out the state of the economy at the time and the care with which she selected her musicians, drawing largely on friends and people she worked with in New Brunswick. The group has since offered performance opportunities to young musicians through its seasonal concerto competitions. Winners appear as soloists on Sinfonietta Nova concerts. Lee makes her home in West Windsor with her husband, a trumpeter and manufacturer of lubricants for woodwind and brass instruments, and their cat, Comet. She serves as director of music ministries at First Presbyterian Church of Dutch Neck and with the Taiwanese-American Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Hillsborough. When she is not conducting or programming, she enjoys gardening and getting out in nature, cooking, travel, and history. “My husband and I are particularly interested in anything World War II related,” she says, singling out a trip the couple took to Normandy. “What an incredible experience that was, to be taken to places and related the local stories. But history in general, it’s very fascinating.”

He heard shuffling noises coming from the first floor, but dismissed them. Later, when he went upstairs, he found that drawers had been opened and two Apple laptops and his son’s backpack had been stolen.

Austin Hodges was part of a West Windsor-Plainsboro team that reached the pinnacle of summer baseball less than two years ago. The West Windsor-Plainsboro High senior is trying to help the Pirates baseball team do the same. “That was the first time that I played a higher level of baseball,” Hodges said. “It was fun to see how the competition changes the higher up you go.” Hodges played in the 2017 Babe Ruth World Series on the only WW-P product to ever advance that far. He was an alltournament team selection as a shortstop then. “It was a great experience,” Hodges said. “It really piqued my interest for baseball. I’ve always liked baseball, but the World Series opened my eyes to how fun it could be with having high level competition and getting to bond as a team.” Hodges, who also played four years of soccer at WW-P South, is the captain for the Pirates this year. WW-P South baseball coach Don Hutchinson hasn’t

named captains in recent years because he doesn’t want any player to feel above anyone else. He doesn’t worry about that with Hodges. “I believe the kids respect him,” Hutchinson said. “Everyone in school respects and likes him. I want kids to follow his example.” Hodges has started in center field for the last two seasons of his high school career, and he’s part of a deep pitching staff that is the strength of the Pirates this year. “He’s our leadoff hitter too,” Hutchinson said. “He pitches and plays center. The ball gets hit when he pitches, but he’s around the plate all the time. Every time you ask him, he says he’s ready. Maybe his arm feels good all the time, or maybe he fights through it. He never says he can’t go.” That can-do attitude is something that Hutchinson hopes will be contagious. Hodges will continue to set the example as a way to lead, although he’s confident that the team has enough self-motivation. “Our team is usually pretty indepen-

dent,” Hodges said. “We don’t need a captain. It’s nice to have someone who’s a direct line to the coach. “I appreciate that from Hutch,” he added of being a captain. “I don’t think I’ll have to do that much considering Hutch is a great coach and it’s a great group of guys.” The Pirates got off to a slow start to the season at 0-3 (the team is 4-6 as of March 22), though most of their struggles were isolated to the field. They made four errors apiece in two of their losses. “I think we have really good potential this year,” Hodges said. “Once we get our defense together, we can definitely compete if not beat some of the best teams out there.” The Pirates have four juniors, two sophomores and four freshmen who will play varsity. Ten of the 14 players can pitch, and even the youngest will have chances to contribute in the busy spring schedule. “We have a lot of good guys,” Hodges said. “They all can throw strikes. They all get the job done.” He sees an opportunistic group that is coming together for his final year of high school baseball. “I played with a few of these guys before and I’ve always had really high opinions of them,” Hodges said. “I was looking forward to my possible last year of baseball.” Hodges will attend Stevens Tech, where he will study engineering. He also could end up continuing his baseball career. “It depends on how my first semester goes, how I handle the college

load and if Stevens has any available slots in the outfield or pitching,” Hodges said. “Maybe I’ll get my velocity up and pitch.” The depth of WW-P South’s pitching could pay off in the long run. Not only can they better handle the three and four games per week schedule, but they can use a variety of arms to keep opponents off balance. “Luke (Potts) and Ian (Muni) are power pitchers,” Hodges said. “And they’re around the plate. Ian being a lefty is helpful. A few of the younger kids have different styles.” The four freshmen are part of a strong class that will be the backbone of the program in a few years. They are still adjusting to the varsity level, but have a solid group of upperclassmen to establish a foundation. The parts are there to challenge any opponent. Hodges and his former Babe Ruth teammates don’t think back to two years ago often, but they can take something from that experience into the rest of this year. That Babe Ruth team didn’t win the district, but they kept improving throughout the summer and played their best down the stretch to make the World Series. After a slower start than they wanted, WW-P South could do the same by tournament time. “It would be a great last year of high school baseball if we could put that together,” said Hodges. “We don’t talk about the World Series as much, but every now and then something will pop up that reminds of a specific play that happened.”

Homeowners and nonhomeowners alike strongly consider homeownership part of the American Dream, according to consumer survey results from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR®). NAR®’s Aspiring Home Buyers Profile analyzed 2018 quarterly consumer insights to capture the sentiments of non-homeowners, both renters and those living with a family member. While affordability was the chief reason these respondents said they did not currently own their own home, they were quick to point out that should their financial situation improve, or their personal status change, they would be driven to enter the market. Lawrence Yun, NAR® chief economist, says unaffordable housing has caused a number of potential buyers to hold off on purchasing a new home. “The lack of affordable and moderately priced homes has forced non-homeowners to delay achieving that part of the American Dream. However, as the survey confirms, significant lifestyle changes like marriage or starting a family often spur nonowners to pursue home-ownership.” Of great interest to potential homebuyers is in which direction mortgage rates will go. The Federal Reserve has indicated it is “pulling in the reins” this year, adopting a more patient policy, which is expected to keep rates from rising significantly.
