Golden opportunity

Muslim Center sees strong growth during first year BY MICHELE ALPERIN The Muslim Center of Greater Princeton in West Windsor has come a long way as it gets ready to celebrate the first anniversary in its new building. Imam Adeyinka Muhammad Mendes says that the mosque, located on Old Trenton Road, has doubled the attendance at its Friday service to close to 1,000 people in the past 12 months. “This has been an amazing growth opportunity because we went from a place that was around 1,000 square feet to a 30,000 square foot facility,” Mendes says. “Like Bonsai trees, once you put them in a larger bucket, they

actually shoot up—they don’t stay miniature trees,” Mendes says. The congregation has come a long way since it started with about 350 families when it was founded two decades ago. The new building, which opened last May, was constructed by the Muslim Center (also known as the Institute of Islamic Studies) as the new home for its congregation, which had previously worshipped in a small commercial space in East Windsor. Before that, the group had leased space up and down Route 1 over the years. In addition to a large increase in the number of worshipers,

the Muslim Center has grown more diverse over the past 12 months—in line with the mosque’s vision of itself as a multicultural community. “Before, the mosque was mostly a Pakistani-Indian Muslim community, with few people from other cultures,” Mendes says. “Now we have lots of African Americans, Egyptians, white Americans, Puerto Ricans, West Africans and Turks.” Mendes, who rejects a “fire and brimstone message,” focuses on a relationship with God of love, not fear or seeking reward. “I think that is a message that resonates with a lot of people looking for spiritual rejuSee MOSQUE, Page 8

Dragon boat racing is intense. It demands rowers be quick and powerful while working together in unison with teammates. It suits Nicholas Cushman perfectly. “Through the years, I’ve always liked sports that are more repetitive,” said the West Windsor 17-year-old. “You know what to expect when you’re doing the race. I’m the sort of person that doesn’t like to be surprised.” Yet Cushman was thrilled

with the surprise of his life when he was invited in April by the United States Dragon Boat Federation to join the Team USA U18 Dragon Boat. Cushman only took up the sport in January, and after one national trial in February didn’t go as well as he hoped, he made the most of another chance to impress the national team coaches in April in Tampa, Florida. They responded with an email invitation to train with the team that will compete in the World Dragon Boat Championships in August in Pattaya-Rayong, Thailand. “I was really surprised,” Cushman said. “For a couple months, I was on the alternate

list. I also did a time trial a few days before that and my time was definitely improved. I think it had a lot to do with it. It was pretty sudden.” Cushman, a junior at Notre Dame High, had rowed crew for a couple years, but never felt as attached to it as he does to dragon boating. His first taste of dragon boating came through the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association. “I guess it was midway through January I tried out these indoor sessions in Pottstown with the Philly team,” Cushman said. “It’s one of those things that you instantly fall in love with when you try it.” The PDBA is coached by See BOAT, Page 10

Merit Scholars named

Nine WW-P school district students have been named winners of the 2019 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. The merit scholar winners, announced Wednesday, were among 2,500 winners nationwide and were selected from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists. WW-P Winners include Timothy Dai, Spencer Hua, Olivia Lu, Daksh Dua, Fayiz Faruk, Meghan Srivastava, Sur ya Sunkavelli, Michelle Tong and Ribhav Bose A panel of college admissions officers and high school counselors judged the students based on their accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college courses, said the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in a release. The judges looked at grades, difficulty of courses, standardized test

scores, contributions and leadership both in school and in the community, an essay and a recommendation from a high school official. The merit scholarship program was created in 1955. Students in grades nine through 12 vie for academic recognition and financial support. About 1.6 million students take the qualifying test every year and about 50,000 of the highest scorers have the chance to be considered.

their families, and “come out to enjoy the performances highlighting the wonderful diversity of our area and to take part in a fun community art project.” The day will feature music and dance performances, including Chinese traditional music and martial arts performances. There will also be African drumming, music and dance of India and a capoeira demonstration. The West Philadelphia Orchestra will be headlining in the afternoon. Meanwhile, the WWAC will also facilitate a community mural project that will be displayed at the West Windsor Arts Center. “My wish for our community is to embrace the diversity that is West Windsor while building a bridge of understanding, respect and friendship,” said West Windsor Mayor Hemant Marathe. For more information, contact the West Windsor Township at (609) 7992400 or e-mail Schaffel at hrc.wwt@ gmail.com. Admission is free.

Older Americans Month celebrated at senior center The West Windsor Senior Center will celebrate Older Americans Month throughout May, including performances at the senior center every Friday. According to a news release, the township said it will focus on the ways that senior citizens in the community lead and inspire others, and how the commu-

nity we can support and learn from older Americans. The Friday special events and performances are set to include: flamenco dancers with electric guitar on May 17; opera singers Ted Otten and Michael Kownacky performing La Scala di Seta on May 24; and Isabella Lamadriz and Johathan Price performing Journey through the American Songbook on May 31.

Wear orange to support the fight against gun violence I want to thank Mayor Hemant Marathe and council members for signing the Gun Violence Awareness Day Proclamation once again this year. Gun Violence Awareness Day is June 7 and it kicks off a National Wear Orange Campaign running from June 7–9. By wearing or displaying orange, businesses and West Windsor residents will honor the over 96 lives ended, and the hundreds more who are wounded each day by gun violence. While most of us are all-too-aware of the physical, emotional and social costs of mass shootings, it is the daily threat of gun violence many struggling communities face that pose the true public health threat. There are communities right here in Mercer County that face this challenge. We are fortunate to face no such challenge here but gun violence still affects our lives. In our schools, students take part in lockdown drills that can make some feel anxious and unsafe. In places of worship, world events have made some who attend our churches, mosques and synagogues feel fearful. Gun violence affects all of us differently, but it does affect us.

The next issue of WW-P News will be published on May 31. Send Community Forum letters to bsanservino@communitynews.org. Deadline: May 22.

I hope all residents and business owners of West Windsor will show their support of the Wear Orange Campaign by either decorating their business windows with orange or by choosing to wear orange. Please do it to support our mayor and council’s proclamation. Do it to support the dedicated young women and men of Students Demand Action, who are working for positive change. Do it to give a voice to the many here in Mercer County whose voices have been abruptly silenced by gun violence.

last year. We have recovered last four year’s worth of drawdown of surplus. We continue the honest budgeting approach in the budget the council will approve tonight. This is the first year the Site Plan Review Advisory Board was replaced by the Technical Review Committee. The first few applications under the new system are progressing well through the pipeline. There is one piece of unfinished business from last year. I had proposed that we use the township-owned land near the municipal complex to build an indoor sports facility for the residents of West Windsor. I still intend to do that. Due to other commitments, I didn’t get a chance to move the project forward. This year, I would like to propose two exciting projects that I intent to finish within this year. A few years back when I opposed a solar farm on township owned property, I was criticized as being an anti-environmentalist. The best environmental policy is not to be dogmatic. The best environmental policy is the most efficient use of all resources time, money and space. As someone who cares about the environment, I will always pursue that. I want to thank Ed Haemmerle—a township resident—for quietly working with me on various solar projects for the last two years. When I became mayor, I realized that half the solar system installed on the senior center was not working. Through persistent efforts of Mr. Haemmerle we finally got the full system restored last week. It’s fully functional now. In keeping with my motto of most efficient use of all resources, I am proposing to issue a request for proposal to install solar panels on the land behind the Princeton Junction Volunteer Fire Company building. Since the township is the owner of both the land and building, it will have to enter into an agreement with the developer. The volunteer fire company will benefit with a lower electricity bill. It will also preserve the prime land for better use. Thanks again to Mr. Haemmerle and Dan Dobromilsky (township landscape architect), we have already established feasibility of such a system. Although the township doesn’t own the West Windsor Volunteer Fire Company building, I continue to encourage them to look at such a system. I feel West Windsor often doesn’t get the credit it deserves. That’s why last year I was excited to welcome Erytech the—a biotech company working on cutting edge of science—to West Windsor. Their ultra-modern facility is complete, and they hope to hold grand opening in another month. They will develop individualized medicine for hard to treat diseases such as pancreatic cancer. I hope it is only the

first of such companies opening their office in West Windsor. Today I am excited to announce a partnership with Magzter whose president, Vijay Radhakrishnan, is a resident of West Windsor. In simple terms Magzter is Netflix of magazines and newspapers. As a member you have unlimited access to their content. Magzter can do one better than Netflix in allowing access based on “geo fence,” or in other words your location rather than membership based on username and password. Thanks to generosity of Mr. Radhakrishnan, every one within the West Windsor boundary will have free access to Magzter content for a year. Thus West Windsor becomes the only city in the U.S. or maybe even the the world where you can read for free as long as you are within its geographical boundary. The township will enter into a memorandum of understanding with Magzter, but it will not cost the taxpayer a single penny. The service will be available shortly as soon as we sign the MOU. West Windsor is fortunate to have residents like Mr. Haemmerle and Mr. Radhakrishnan who have so much to offer. I hope companies trying to relocate to New Jersey will realize where the real action is. Finally, 2018 was the first year for West Windsor Gives back—my concept to raise funds for a local charity. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and township residents, the mayor’s ball was a sold out event. We raised over $30,000 to purchase drones for the West Windsor Police Department. They are not fully operational yet. I was happy to observe their positive impact during a township event. I promise to keep the council informed about their use as they become fully operational. This year’s recipient of West Windsor Gives Back’s effort is the Princeton Junction Volunteer Fire Company. The hard working volunteers of West Windsor Gives Back and the volunteer fire department have had a great start. As was already announced, next year’s recipient of the mayor’s ball will be the West Windsor Arts Council and the 2021 recipient will be the West Windsor volunteer Fire Company, which is celebrating its 100th year in 2021. When the West Windsor Gives back fund raisers reach out to you, please be generous. Remember that charitable contributions are not capped and are fully deductible. I will close the same way I did last year. The state of our township depends collectively on all of us. West Windsor has been a perfect place to raise my family. I am asking for your help to make it even a better place to raise a family and grow old with your friends.

‘We settled with Fair Share Housing Center on our affordable housing obligation without requiring any housing on the Howard Hughes property.’

acter of the Prophet Muhammad, was renewing personally and left him with important messages to bring back to his mosque. He says that a critical reason he chose to travel with Celebrate Mercy was its “amazing interfaith work” and Al-Messidi’s role in initiating efforts to raise funds to repair desecration at a St. Louis Jewish cemetery in 2017, and to support the victims of the shooting at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue and their families in 2018. He also hoped to encourage his congregants to add Jerusalem to “their once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage,” which is often just to Mecca and Medina. For Mendes, Jerusalem was a homecoming, because a visit there at age 16, he says, “changed my life.” During the trip, which exposed him to all aspects of Israeli society, they visited the Muslim quarter. When Mendes, then Christian, and his cousin, wearing a Malcolm X t-shirt, were exiting the Dome of the Rock, they encountered an old man. They greeted him in Arabic, and he returned their greeting, asking about the picture on the t-shirt. When they told him it was an American Muslim, he asked if they were Muslim. They said no, and he asked whether they believed in one God. When they responded in the affirmative, he said, “In that case, you’re my brother.” “That was the culmination of what my experience in Israel led up to: I felt called to the oneness of god,” Mendes says. “The fact that he could profess to embrace me as a brother—he was old

ciated it, and some of them even danced.” They planned way ahead of time how they would commemorate Muhammad’s miraculous night journey and ascension at the Al-Aqsa mosque complex in Jerusalem. Muslims believe that the Angel Gabriel miraculously took Muhammad on on a tour from Mecca to Jerusalem. There Muhammad led the spirits of other prophets in prayer, then ascended up to the heavens and beyond the heavens, “where he communed with God directly, beyond time and space,” Mendes explains. The day before the celebration, the pilgrims packed 600 bags of candy. The day of, while sitting on the steps of the Dome of the Rock, Mendes says, “We started singing songs praising God and songs celebrating Muhammad’s night journey and his life and passing out candy, and before you know it about 500 people were around us.” After Jerusalem, in Mecca the group performed the minor pilgrimage, called Umrah, which takes two to three hours (as opposed to the hajj, which lasts four to five days). This involved walking around the Kaaba, as Abraham and the angels circled the throne of God, and trotting between the two mountains where Muslims believe Hajar walked to find water for her son Ismail. In Medina, their last stop, they prayed in the mosque of Prophet Muhammad and visited his burial site and those of his followers. But to give back, they slipped tips to the custodial staff and bought shawarma to feed to stray cats. “It was important for us to do things that were not just about our personal worship,” Mendes says.

BOAT continued from Page 1 legendary American dragon boat head coach Bob McNamara. McNamara has been coaching dragon boating for 33 years, won numerous international titles, and saw potential in Cushman. “He wasn’t starting fresh,” McNamara said. “He essentially got hooked up with adults who have been world champions and have been doing dragon boating for 30-plus years. We’ve taken youth to world championships and they’ve won world championships. He happened to be at the right place at the right time.” McNamara said Cushman got in with the right mentors, went to indoor sessions. and to a training camp. He went to Florida and was paddling twice a day with elite rowers. Cushman had a background in an assortment of activities. He’d tried crew after dabbling in several other interests, but it is dragon boating that helped to bring everything together. “I know crew is similar,” Cushman said. “I did tap dancing for a bit, and then I did figure skating. Even though

they’re so different, they seem to have all played a role. Figure skating kind of helps with balance and tap dance helps with rhythm. I just think it’s an interesting thing to think about—the variety.” Crew is the closest to dragon boating. McNamara says that the connection with water is their biggest similarity, but there are differences that drew Cushman. “Both have been fun, but I think the main difference is for dragon boating you have this sense of control,” Cushman said. “The paddles are two or three feet long. For me, I feel like I have more control over it. Another big difference, crew is more of a core sport, whereas dragon boating is very much arm oriented. If you look at the people on the U.S. team, my mom says they can’t hold their arms down because there’s so much muscle.” Cushman has good size and uses it well in the boat. He has put a lot of time to build up his technique quickly and gain some experience. “He has such loyalty, and that’s hard to get with the kids, and the desire to do it,” said coach Billy Heffernan. “He’s got a very good focus. He has a long career ahead of him. He’s very dedicated to the sport. When he says he’ll be there, he’ll be there.” Heffernan is coach of the youth in Team Relentless out of New Hope, Pennsylva-

There are more adults in the club and Cushman trains with them at times. After being introduced to the sport with PDBA, Cushman found Team Relentless a little closer to home than Philadelphia. “Luckily we’ve been able to get a lot of practices in,” Cushman said. “Philly, they have practice every single day of the week, but it’s very early in the morning so I can’t exactly make it. So then I go to New Hope and they’ve also been good getting everyone stronger, whether it’s for a regatta or festival.” Wherever Cushman has gone, he has found more experienced dragon boat racers who are happy to help him. It started in L.A., and continued when he delved deeper into dragon boating in Philadelphia and New Hope. One of the challenges was adjusting to the different aspects of dragon boating. It didn’t come instantly, but he worked to understand the demands of the sport. “I think part of it is connecting the different parts of the body that you have to use,” Cushman said. “For crew, it’s not totally straight, but you have to sit pretty upright. For dragon boating, you’re leaning in a C shape. Your back is supposed to be like that. It was weird at first to adjust to it, but with practice it got fine.” Cushman improves with each time that he’s practicing for dragon boating. His background in crew helped him get off to a quick start. “This is more high level paddling,” Heffernan said. “It takes a lot of strength. He’s very strong, which is nice. He’s a nice sized kid. Your timing has to be right on. When you’re in a

crew with 10 people, you have to be on.” The 10-man boats of the U18 level are smaller than the normal 20-man boats used for older crews and they tip easier. Teams have to be in sync to work well. Cushman had to learn quickly while practicing frequently with the more powerful adults. He’s picked it up quickly to get to the national team level. “It’s a little unusual,” McNamara said. “But we’ve seen it before. We’ve taken kids in the first year and taken them to the world championships and had them do well.” Cushman is making sure that he gets in plenty of practice as he builds toward joining the national team toward the end of summer to prep for the world championships. He is looking forward to the chance to compete internationally in a sport that has become a major part of his life. He’s never competed overseas in anything. “This will be the first time,” Cushman said. “Thailand is by far the longest trip I’ll be taking for competition.” It’s already been a whirlwind tour to get to this point. Nicholas Cushman was just looking for something new when he found a chance to compete in dragon boat racing. Making the national team just a few months later made for one surprise he was thrilled to experience. “It’s really, really hard to believe,” Cushman said. “I’m still in that shock stage of it all. I’m definitely happy but the whole thing of it happening so quickly is really weird. I’m happy about it. The community as a whole has been really nice and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Muthoni F. Nduthu, 45, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was arrested by West Windsor Police on a number of charges related to assaulting an officer and drunk driving. Officer Kyle LaForge said he stopped Nduthu, who was driving a gray Toyota pick-up truck, on Route 1 near Nassau Park Boulevard for erratic driving and for failing to signal a lane change. During the stop, Nduthu was determined to be intoxicated. When Officer LaForge attempted to arrest and handcuff Nduthu she resisted, and the struggle resulted in both Officer LaForge and Nduthu falling to the ground, police said. As Officer Peter Buchanan, who was on the scene to assist, was attempting to get Nduthu in handcuffs, she bit him on his left hand. After being handcuffed, she continued to be uncooperative. Nduthu was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, throwing bodily fluids at a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and driving while intoxicated.

Theft. Ulta Beauty in the Nassau Park Shopping Center was the victim of a theft on Feb. 25. Officer Kyle LaForge said that two women walked around the store and concealed several bottles of designer fragrances in their handbags. An anti-theft device activated as the women exited without paying, but they fled the scene and escaped, making off with perfume valued at $1,071. The suspects are described as women in their 40s, both wearing pink scarves on their heads. They fled the scene in a white Lincoln Navigator.

SPortS Lu helps lead North girls’ golfers to undefeated start and MCT win BY JUSTIN FEIL Katherine Lu tried her hand at a lot of different activities before she found golf. The High School North sophomore played basketball, baseball, swam and focused on piano all before trying golf. She put all those aside after she picked up her first club at age 10. “As soon as I started hitting golf balls, as soon as I got the hang of it, I immediately started playing tournaments,” Lu said. “I started with the kids’ tournaments. After maybe two months of picking up Ever since I was 10 years old, I’ve loved golf.” Five years later, Lu is one of the top golfers in the state for a WW-P North team that has become a county dynasty. Lu moved up one place from a year ago to take second place with a 1-over par 73 at the Mercer Oaks West course on May 2. She helped the Knights win their fourth straight team title. The Knights have been a tough team to beat. The team was undefeated in its first 10 games, and its top four shot 326—14 shots ahead of runner-up Peddie, for their fourth straight county crown. The team also won the Central Jersey Girls Golf League Tournament at Con-

cordia Golf Club in Monroe Township on May 9. “Our team is so deep,” said Knights head coach Tom Connolly. “Our third, fourth and fi fth are better than most everyone’s third, fourth, fi fth.” Lu has been handling herself just fine this year. She already won the IMG tournament at Galloping Hill. “It was really big,” Lu said. “It boosted my confidence a lot. It was my first win of the season.” She’s competed in some big events like the U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifying at Chartiers Country Club in Pittsburgh on May 6. She is gaining experience from those sorts of challenging events, and has progressed plenty since last season. “I’ve been really trying to improve my consistency and accuracy with my shots,” she said. “And also, the mental aspect, I think it’s the most important aspect—handling myself on the course and controlling my emotions and trying not to get too upset on the course and moving on.” Her teammates, too, are steadily improving, which is why their team is so formidable. “Each year their average is a couple strokes lower,” Connolly said. “They’ve all golfed before and they all golf pretty well. The competition is

North sophomore Katherine Lu with the trophy she won for taking first place, girls 15-18, in the IMG Tournament in April. a little daunting freshman year. Usually sophomore and junior year they rebound and their scores down 1 or 2 strokes each year.” Oftentimes, the toughest competition on the course comes from themselves. In regular-season and tournaments, they have found almost any of them can win

the day. Lu has been more consistent this year and is hoping that continues through the remainder of the season. She shot her season-low at the county tournament and has been solid all season. “Katie is a lot more confident as a golfer this year,” Connolly said. “She’s playing very well. She has a chance to go really low, which she has.” Lu doesn’t like to set expectations too high for herself, but she has been able to respond in big spots like counties with strong play. “She just handles it terrifically,” Connolly said. “She’s very poised and confident. And even when she lost, her first response was to congratulate the other girl.” Next year, North will return their entire five that played in counties, but Lu is not looking farther than her next shot and working to make sure she’s even better every time she takes to the course. “I’m pretty happy with how I’m doing now,” Lu said. “I could definitely be doing better, but compared to last year how I started, it’s a lot better. I had a few swing changes so I’m adapting to those and it’s helped me a lot. I’m happy with where I am, but hopefully I can get even better as time goes on.”
