Top 10 seniors make their marks

The 2018-19 school year is wrapping up, and this year’s Top 10 academic seniors at Bordentown Regional High School are looking ahead toward college as graduation approaches. Each student filled out a questionnaire about themselves, including information about their career plans, favorite Bordentown memories, extracurricular activities and teachers. The seniors will attend colleges such as Johns Hopkins University, Elon University, UPenn, University of Pittsburgh, Boston University and UCLA. They will study biomedical engineering, musical theater, finance, computer science, mathematics and political science on their way to prospective future careers like clinical pharmacists, engineers, finance directors and writers. During their time at Bordentown, this year’s Top 10 students were involved with clubs like Model UN, theater club, Future Business Leaders of America, debate and Teens of Fire, as well as extracurriculars like National Honor Society, baseball, field hockey and STEM for kids. The class of 2019’s graduation ceremony is set for Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at the Bordentown Regional High School Performing Arts Center, starting at 6 p.m. To read more about this year’s Top 10 students, turn to Page 8.

History blooms on garden tour By MicheLe ALPerin Patricia Reaney is especially excited the “hidden gardens” that people usually don’t get to see. “The charm is discovering the gardens behind the fences,” she says. One such garden belongs to Babette Bohanan, who moved to Bordentown in the 1960s when her father was transferred to New Jersey by the Colonial Pipeline Company. In 1994, after her divorce, she moved back to town with her two children “because I loved it. It is a town where you can walk down the street to get

coffee, do your banking, and go to the little parks, and I had friends already.” The garden in Bohanan’s backyard, which has evolved over time, will be part of the “History in Bloom” self-guided tour of gardens and other historic sites, Saturday, June 22, from noon to 5 p.m. Reaney, with her co-chair Rick Ellis has taken over planning the annual garden tour from the able hands of longtime chair Bonnie Goldman. Bohanan’s passion for gardening started with planting marigolds as a kid and has continued

throughout her life. Eventually she was able to create a patio and Japanese garden for a house her father had gutted and refurbished for the family. When she lived in apartments she “always planted flowers and maintained the little grounds around it, mulching and making it beautiful.” When she bought her house on Princeton Street in Bordentown in 1994, it had a six-foot fence that she didn’t like, a 40-foot pine tree, a shed, and a patio with bricks that didn’t match, but, she says, “I could envision what I could have.” So whenever an opportunity See BLOOM, Page 10

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection came out against an application for a proposed toxic waste treatment facility in Bucks County May 15, saying it had “a number of outstanding deficiencies.” PADEP’s Notice of Intent to Deny comes after completing a 10-month technical review of materials submitted by the applicant, Israel-based Elcon Recycling Services. Elcon wants to build a facility in Falls Township that would store and treat nearly 200,000 tons per year of hazardous and residual waste. This includes mercury, lead, cadmium, benzine, vinyl chloride and 260 other chemicals. “After a rigorous review of the application, supplemental materials submitted by the company, and input from the public, DEP will not approve this application in its current form,” PADEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell said in a statement. “Unless the company can address these outstanding deficiencies, DEP will have no choice but to move forward with a full application denial.” PADEP, in its statement, was careful to point out that a Notice of Intent to Deny is not a final decision by PADEP. Elcon still may submit materials to address the deficiencies cited by PADEP. But, with the review over, members of the public now also have an opportunity to go on the record. A public comment period begins June 1 and runs See ELCON, Page 6

ELCON continued from Page 1 until July 15, with PADEP required to acknowledge all comments its receives during the 45-day comment period. The agency will review and address each comment in a public document. All comments should be emailed to RA-EPHWELCON@pa.gov. The PADEP decision only applies to Elcon’s hazardous waste application. Elcon also has two additional applications for air quality and stormwater, which PADEP continues to review. In a document dated May 7, PADEP detailed 18 reasons why it could not accept Elcon’s hazardous waste application. Elcon’s miscues ranged from overstating the facility’s economic benefits to, in its plans, including buildings and infrastructure outside the site boundary. Of particular importance was PADEP’s discovery of an equivocation by Elcon regarding groundwater monitoring— company representatives had said Elcon would install a system to watch for accidental releases, but PADEP said the application stated Elcon would install groundwater monitoring only after a

spill had already occurred. PADEP also dinged Elcon for being unclear in its application as to whether Elcon would accept certain types of waste, such as PCBs, at the Falls Township facility. PADEP’s announcement is the latest in a line of recent blows to the Elcon proposal. The Falls Township Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to reject the proposal during a special meeting April 30, prompting a standing ovation from the residents who packed the meeting at Pennsbury High School West’s Keller Hall. That vote came on the heels of a March 26 unanimous decision from the Falls Township planning commission to not recommend plans for the Elcon facility. The planning commission does not have legal authority, but the Falls supervisor board does factor its recommendations into decisions. Public opinion has long been against the Elcon proposal, but the opposition became louder and larger after the Hamilton Post published an investigation into Elcon, its history and its Falls Township proposal last month. The Falls Township and PADEP decisions came after the article’s release, as did a May 7 Hamilton Township council resolution opposing the facility. Before the council vote, Hamilton was one of just two neighboring municipalities to not have passed a resolution against Elcon. Trenton is now the lone holdout. The Elcon proposal isn’t dead, though. The company’s Falls Township proposal has been denied by PADEP three times Insurance Insurance Counselor Insurance Counselor Counselor already, once in 2015 and twice in 2017. Like those times, Elcon once again will have a chance to revise and resubmit its applications. If Elcon receives the approvals it 1260 Route South 1260 Route 33 South seeks, it would build a 70,000-square1260 Route3333 South foot storage and treatment facility on Hamilton, Hamilton, NJ 08690 Hamilton,NJ NJ08690 08690 a 33-acre plot of land on Dean Sievers (609) Ph:Ph: (609) 631-4286 Ph: (609)631-4286 631-4286 Place. BLOOM continued from Page 1 came along, she took it. She removed the mismatched patio bricks and built a stone fishpond with a bridge, leaving a green area for her children’s fort and small swimming pool. After a hurricane knocked down trees in a neighboring yard that damaged her fences, she tore them down. She also took down the 40-foot tree. When a neighbor down the street put in a cement walkway, she gave Bohanan the historic Bordentown bricks she was done with. Bohanan used them to create two “mini-courtyards,” connected by brick pathways. In one courtyard two dark wicker seats and a small table sit under a Japanese full moon tree, surrounded by boxwood. Down a brick path is a second courtyard that features Belgian blocks with an ornamental Japanese cane tree. The plants in Bohanan’s garden also show a progression of colors, starting in April and May with purple, then orange roses, white and pink flowers, and minty green hydrangeas. Bohanan has also made complementary changes to the backyard of the neighbor who owns the other side of her attached house and rents it out. “I made the backyard like one whole yard,” she says. She not only does the neighbor’s plantings, but also maintains their lawn— and she paid for a black iron fence to surround both yards. To create some separation and privacy between the two yards, she put up a “natural fence,” with thick tree limbs holding up a vine that has deep purple and turquoise berries in the summer, with bushes and flowers underneath. During the garden tour Bohanan’s friend

Frank Cianci, an officer in the New Jersey National Guard, will be playing guitar and singing, and her son, Zachary, a tattoo artist who owns Studio 417 in Bordentown Township, will be doing a living portrait. The garden tour is called “History in Bloom,” Reaney says, because “Bordentown is extraordinarily historically rich, it is a small, one square mile, city, with 300 years of history.” “The gardens on the tour are very diverse,” Reaney says. They range from very small gardens in the backyards of tiny row houses to huge gardens of half an acre, with different garden rooms planted in everything from irises to native species. As at Bohanan’s house, local musicians at other stops, and artists will be working in various gardens. Goldman’s garden is on East Chestnut Street, where her 1750s farmhouse is surrounded by gardens and centuriesold trees. In her native-plant garden, added just this year, a landscape architect will answer questions from 2 to 4 p.m. Reaney expresses special appreciation of Goldman’s years as chair and says, We are just trying to build on what she has already developed.” At 601 Farnsworth is a circa-1900 home sits in a very park-like setting. “It looks like a mini arboretum,” Reaney says, noting especially its “rare and unique specimen trees.” Peach ice cream will be served on the house’s wraparound veranda. Mary Mother of the Church Parish has a prayer garden that is over 20 years old. “It is a great public garden where you can sit and rest and meditate for a while, under big shade trees,” Reaney says. Bordentown’s Histor y in Bloom garden tour is set for June 22 this year. designed in the pattern of the Rosary. The Rosary beads correspond to sets of ten Hail Marys, called decades, that link together the four Mysteries, each comprising five events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. In the garden the round flowerbeds represent the different mysteries. For example, red and purple flowers signify the Sorrowful Mysteries, the events around Christ’s crucifixion. A burning bush plant signifies God’s presence in the garden. One of the historical stops on the tour is the Christ Church Parish Cemetery. “Some of the oldest Bordentown families are buried there and folks that participated in major wars going back to the Revolutionary War,” Reaney says. For example, Colonel Joseph Kirkbride (17311803) was a Revolutionary War patriot and friend of Thomas Paine, whose pamphlet “Common Sense” helped crystallize sentiment for independence in 1776. According to the Thomas Paine National Historical Association, Paine lived in Bordentown from 1778-87 with his close friend Joseph Kirkbride on the property at 2 Farnsworth overlooking the river. Bohanan spent her career in the military and retired in 2010. She started part time with the New Jersey State Police, then moved to a full-time position with the United States Army National Guard on Eggerts Crossing Road. She then worked for 14 years in their Aviation division on Scotch Road. For the remainder of her career she worked for Homeland Security, back on Eggerts Crossing.. Reaney, whose father worked in the military, was born in Okinawa, Japan, and lived in Europe. When it was time for school and her father was still stationed overseas, her family moved to Worcester, MA. When her father moved stateside to Fort Dix, the family moved to Willingboro in Burlington County, then lived in Marlton and Medford. When her father left the military, he became a corrections officer in Trenton. Her mother, she says, “was a traditional mom.” Reaney graduated from Rowan University with a degree in fine arts, concentrating in clay. After college, she worked with a potter doing production ware for nurseries and florists and spent a few years glassblowing at Wheaton Village in South Jersey. Not happy in either one,

she got a gig as a bartender in a union shop, which gave her benefits and paid vacation and sick days. Eighteen years later she was hired by Local 54, the labor union that had represented her, as a business agent—the staff person who advocates for union members in disciplinary matters, contract negotiations, other job issues, and also politically. After nine years, because she was living in Jersey City, she moved to the same position with the Communication Workers of America, Local 1036, and retired after nine years. In Bordentown she hopes to get back to clay, possibly at Leaping Dog Art Studios, which has a clay studio. Reaney traces her interest in old houses and history to her artistic experiences working with three-dimensional objects. As someone “very object oriented,” she has always collected old things. She has also been fascinated by design and knew she would eventually buy an old house. In Mount Laurel she bought a 1795 farmhouse. “I fell in love with the simpler design and the post-and-beam architecture. Everything was handmade and hand planed,” she says. “I used to sit and look at my ceilings and imagine how many people of so many generations had looked at that ceiling, how many people were born and died there, how many were happy and unhappy—all the stories that were in that house.” When she moved five years ago to Bordentown, she knew she would buy another historic house in Bordentown. “You can walk around this town, and you can literally feel the history here,” she says. She first came to the Bordentown Historical Society wanting to know more about her circa-1786 duplex. “The house that is two doors down from me—the gentleman who lived there was a captain in the Revolutionary War. His daughter ran off and eloped with Joseph Bonaparte’s nephew—it was a big scandal for the day. Around the corner from me is Thomas Paine’s house,” she says. “I take my morning walk, and everywhere I turn I am constantly finding out new and fascinating things about the residents of Bordentown,” she says. Reaney enjoys gardening, which she did on her three-quarter acre property in Mount Laurel, where her ex-husband had a landscaping company. In Bordentown she has a small garden, which she says “at some point will be presentable.” Maybe 25 years in, Reaney will be able to say about her garden what Bohanan says today: “It’s like my little heaven back there.” When Bohanan put in a new kitchen this year, it included lots of windows looking out on her garden. She says, “ “This is my grand finale. I can look out in my yard spring, summer, fall, and winter.” The History in Bloom garden tour is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 9-16. Order tickets online at bordentownhistory.org or in person at Shoppe 202 at 202 Farnsworth Ave. or at the society’s headquarters and museum, the 1740 Friends Meetinghouse at 302 Farnsworth, where visitors can pick up tickets as well as the tour booklet and discount coupons to local restaurants and businesses. They can also view the exhibit “How Does Your Garden Grow?” featuring historic Bordentown horticulturalists at the Friends Meetinghouse. Rain date, Sunday, June 23.

PLANNING FOR TOOTH EMERGENCIES Academy Dental is a warm, inviting SPAthemed dentist facility in Hamilton, and is rated as one of the best places by Hulafrog for dental treatment. Dr. Navleen Thind, D.D.S. is a trusted dentist who practices adults and kids’ dentistry, along with her colleagues Dr. Steven Reff D.D.S., FICOI, (Dental Implants), Dr. Pankaj Puri D.D.S. (Orthodontics) and Dr. Gunjan Parmar D.D.S. and Dr. Christine Pereira, D.D.S. Today, Dr. Thind is sharing her four top tips to help you manage dental emergencies, and importantly, plan ahead so you are best equipped to handle one:

1. FIRST THINGS FIRST: Choosing a dentist, and trusting them to care for your happy, healthy smile is an important decision most families make. First things that come to mind are if you are adequately covered should you need any dental work. Selecting a dental insurance plan which has a wider selection of dentists can already set you far ahead. Certain plans limit acceptance at a specific dental practice, generally known as DMO or HMO plans. In comparison, PPO plans allow patients to visit any doctor who is in their network. In addition, most such plans also have out of network benefits, ultimately allowing patients to virtually see any dentist practice. When in an emergency, it is utmost important to have as much flexibility in who you can see for urgent care, so making the right decisions for yourself and your family are critical. Planning ahead, making the right choices and investing wisely in the selection of coverage that your family needs can yield great success later. 2. EMERGENCIES ON VACATION: Spring time is here, and soon you will be travelling for your next vacation. While away from home, it is important to be ready to handle any dental emergency. Chances are that travelling out of state, your insurance may have limitations, and it may be harder to find a dentist that can provide care. Supplemental dental insurance for travel can be a way to be prepared, and it is good to check out any dentists which accept your supplementary insurance should the need arise. However, having your family dentist reachable via online, phone or social media can be a great way to still get some advice, or tips while travelling. Keep your dentist’s emergency line handy, and be sure to like their social media pages so they know you well in advance when you need

them! Packing a small medical kit with some pain medicines, and gum ointment may help as an urgent palliative resource.

3. DENTIST VS EMERGENCY ROOM: A natural first response to any dental emergency is to call your family dentist for an urgent appointment. Most dental practices have limited office hours, with no late evening hours or weekend clinical days. This limits the availability of such practice to patients when they need them the most. Often, patients may call around for any other dentists who may accommodate them. In most situations, the hospital emergency room is the only way to seek urgent help. While helpful in terms of receiving urgent palliative care, most emergency rooms do not staff a dentist. After an expensive visit and long wait – patients are most certainly recommended to see a dentist as a follow-up for treatment. Academy Dental is open 7 days a week, which offers patients in Hamilton, Robbinsville, Lawrenceville and surrounding areas a great advantage to seek urgent care. Offering online appointment scheduling 24 hours a day provides great mental peace to patients that they have a secured spot to see the dentist at their earliest convenience. We welcome patients to check our extremely high levels of service and care, and benefit from our expanded coverage.

4. SECRET SAUCE (CONTINUING CARE): Routine dental visits are key, and can help detect problems early so they can be addressed. Continuing care is the most reliable way to stay abreast of your oral health, and be informed about any concerns that need immediate attention. Dr. Thind provides her patients counselling on how to care for their teeth in between their regular, bi-annual visits. Her team of excellent Dental Hygienists are caring, and ensure all patients are provided with the same, gentle care and attention. Getting healthy and staying healthy prevents undue stress and expense that a dental emergency visit may involve. Regular appointment reminders from Academy Dental via text, phone and Birthday Postcards provide our patients a fairly easy way to be connected, and attend routine checkups. Check with your family dentist if they are also setup to keep yourself informed and are vested in your healthy smiles the same way as you are!

A butterfly sits in the garden at Christ Church in Bordentown, where a butterfly release ceremony will be help June 15.

By Jennifer Goetz Grief is different for everyone. The process has its ebbs and flows, and every person processes grief in their own way. Rob Pecht, the owner of the Bordentown funeral home, understands how difficult the grief process can be. He became inspired to think of a way people could express their grief in a symbolic way. On June 15, Pecht will team up with Christ Church Parish in Bordentown to host a butterfly release ceremony, where the public is welcome to join them as they release 200 Monarch butterflies into Christ Church’s butterfly garden. Working towards creating something beautiful to celebrate the life there was before, Pecht went to Christ Church and asked if he could build a butterfly garden. About a year ago, Pecht created the garden and filled it with plants to prepare for the future butterflies. In order to accomplish his vision, Pecht went to father Matthew Tucker,

the priest of Christ Church, for assistance and permission to use the church’s land for the garden. Pecht provided the funds to create the garden and Father Tucker shares that people have been attracted to it since it was first built. “Spring is the stepping stone for life, for a new beginning,” said Pecht, “why not give people that opportunity to look for a new beginning.” It takes time to heal after loss, and sometimes people are left permanently impacted by a loss, he said. After a funeral, and as the weeks go by, the world keeps turning and moves past the grief an individual is feeling in the wake of a loved ones passing. “Families are surrounded when the initial death occurs,” said Pecht, “[then] everyone goes back to their lives little by little, and families are left to their own grieving.” Then the “firsts” begin, said Pecht. The first anniversary, the first birthday, the first big accomplishment that your

loved one won’t be around for. Pecht imagines this process as something butterflies go through before they transform into the beautiful creatures they are. As a caterpillar, they coocone themselves from the world, until they break free of their self-imposed bondage. Pecht sees them as the perfect symbol for grieving individuals. This “temporary enclosure” represents the wall grieving individuals put up to the world, but “by releasing the butterflies [Pecht hopes] it encourages people to break out of their emotional cocones.” Why Pecht choose Monarch butterflies as the butterflies to be released at this event is because of several reasons: they are beautiful; they’re one of the more common breeds of butterflies in the state; they represent royalty andcan be seen as a symbol of the monarchy (hence their name); and that they appear to be fearless. Pecht was inspired to build the butterfly garden when he thought about Blue Christmas. There are services specific to grief, struggle, fear, during times of what otherwise would be happiness and cheer. Pecht thought of the butterfly release ceremony as a way to pay tribute to the grieving process, and a way for the community to help those grieving “get everyone through the tough parts.” The butterflies will be arriving in individual containers and one will be provided for each family that attends. Tucker will speak, as will Pecht, and then a countdown will take place to release the butterflies into the garden. “I am hoping the event draws attention to the churchyard,” said Tucker,

“bringing life and beauty into a graveyard is important.” The Christ Church graveyard contains the graves of historic Bordentown residents that served during the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War. Some figures that rest in the graveyard includes former rectors of Christ Church, Rev. Edgar L. Sanford, Rev. Nathanial Pettit and Rev. Frank C. Leeming. Tucker saw the butterfly garden as an opportunity that will not only lend beauty, but will serve as a “place of refreshment and peace.” “Our parishioners love it,” Tucker said. Beyond the church’s parishioners, residents of Bordentown have walked through to get a look at the garden as well. “I hope it inspires wonder and comfort, especially to the children,” Tucker said. The five stages of grief, according to Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 novel, On Death and Dying, are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Experts have both supported and argued against the notion that grief can be broken down in stages, Pecht said. There are a variety of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual reactions individuals may experience during the grief process. “Death can be one source of grief, but individuals mourn for a vast number of reasons. “Grief is more than just the loss of a person,” said Pecht. The loss of a job, the loss of a friendship and a divorce are just a few events people go through that may cause grieve. “What better way for you to take those fears, and release them,” said Pecht.

Nationally Recognized Trauma Care for More Than 20 Years Capital Health Reverified as Level II Trauma Center The Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma Center at Capital Health Regional Medical Center (RMC) has been recertified as a Level II Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This achievement is the eighth verification for Capital Health since the first in 1998. The Center, also designated as a Level II Trauma Center by the New Jersey Department of Health, is one of only 10 designated trauma centers in New Jersey and the regional referral center for injured patients in Mercer County and adjacent parts of Somerset, Hunterdon, Burlington, and Middlesex counties as well as nearby areas of Pennsylvania. “The ACS is the largest association of surgeons in the world and an important advocate for all surgical patients,” said DR. DOMINICK EBOLI, director of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma Center at Capital Health Regional Medical Center. “After a successful review of our performance and resources by nationally recognized trauma experts, this recertification shows the residents of our community that when they need us most, Capital Health meets the highest standards for treating severely injured patients.”

The Full Spectrum of Care According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, injury is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Care provided in a trauma center decreases the chance of death following injury by 25 percent compared to care in general hospitals. In addition to providing the necessary resources for trauma care, ACS level II verification also means that centers like the BristolMyers Squibb Trauma Center address the needs of injured patients across the entire spectrum of care, providing patients at Capital Health Regional Medical Center with access to important injury prevention programs, prehospital care and transportation, acute hospital care, rehabilitation, and research. “Through programs and resources not available in most general hospitals—including 24hour immediate access to trauma surgeons and other specialists—we are able to provide comprehensive care that begins at the time of injury and continues through rehabilitation,” said DR. DENNIS QUINLAN, associate medical director of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma Center. UNDERSTANDING BRAIN TUMOR SYMPTOMS signs to guide you to the right plan for care Brain tumors, while relatively rare, do not discriminate, affecting men, women, and children across all age groups and ethnicities. And because the brain is the critical organ that controls all others, it’s important to recognize the signs that may suggest a brain tumor and discuss them with your health care team. “The many parts of the brain control different body functions, so symptoms will vary depending on tumor location, type, and size,” said DR. NAVID REDJAL, director of Neurosurgical Oncology at the Capital Health Center for Neuro-Oncology. “However, there are some common symptoms to watch for which, if ongoing, may indicate the presence of a brain tumor. Anyone experiencing one or more of them over an extended period of time should see their doctor to get an accurate diagnosis.”

COMMON BRAIN TUMOR SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: Headaches: A persistent, progressive pain that is different from a migraine, does not respond to over-the-counter pain medication (like aspirin or ibuprofen), gets worse when lying down, and may be accompanied by vomiting or changes in vision. Seizures: In some cases, a seizure may be the first indication that a person has a brain tumor. Focal Progressive Symptoms: Localized symptoms—such as hearing problems, difficulty walking or speaking, or feeling clumsy—can often help identify the location of the tumor. Mass Effect: Occurs when a brain tumor presses on surrounding normal tissue, causing nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, vision problems, headaches, and behavior changes. Sudden Personality Changes/Cognitive Changes/Memory Loss: A tumor may cause disruptions in normal brain function that lead to changes in a patient’s behavior and ability to reason, remember, and learn. “At the Center for Neuro-Oncology, our advanced technological resources and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment are just as important as the compassionate and individualized care we provide,” said Dr. Redjal. “If a person experiences new symptoms or changes to existing ones, talking to your doctor is an important first step.” The Center for Neuro-Oncology, part of Capital Institute for Neurosciences and Capital Health Cancer Center, is a referral center for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer involving the brain and spine. The Center is housed in stateof-the-art facilities where patients have access to an experienced and caring team of physicians, nurses and staff who work closely with referring physicians to facilitate rapid and thorough evaluations and recommendations for patients and their families. In addition to providing advanced, neuro-oncologic and neuroscience care, the Center participates in clinical trials to help fight and find cures for cancer.

Governor Murphy Signs Mental Health Parity Legislation at CAPITAL HEALTH In April, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy visited Capital Health Regional Medical Center to sign legislation (A2031/ S1339) that will enhance enforcement of mental health parity laws by improving transparency and accountability related to the insurance coverage of mental health and substance use disorder treatment services for New Jersey residents. He was joined by Speaker Craig Coughlin, Senate Leader Tom Kean, Department of Banking and Insurance Commissioner Marlene Caride, New Jersey Department of Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson, and mental health advocates for the official signing. 16Bordentown Current | Health Headlines by Capital Health

TAKE CHARGE of controllable factors to reduce your stroke risk On average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the United States. Every four minutes, someone dies of stroke. These are sobering statistics from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, but there is some good news too. Ace Kato leads Scotties into state tournament By Rich Fisher Bordentown High baseball coach Chris Glenn thought he had three aces in his hand when the season started, but Kyle Kato is the only one he has been able to throw on the table with any consistency. Fortunately, the Kato card has been enough to grab the pot on most occasions. Entering the Scotties’ May 23 state tournament game with South River, the senior was 5-1 with a 1.43 ERA and had 44 strikeouts while walking just 12 in 44 innings. His efforts have been needed as Bordentown’s other two standout hurlers battled injures. Kyle Marchetti missed the first part of the season with a shoulder issue, and by the time he returned Nick Nemes had been sidelined in early May due to injury. The “Big Three” has not been fully intact all season. “To Kyle’s credit, he’s shouldered a lot of the load,” Glenn said. “He’s just embraced the opportunity. Any type of big game that we were in he’s had the ball. The one game he lost (against Moorestown) was the first game of the season and we didn’t make a couple plays behind him. But he competes and makes pitches in big spots.” Kato knows what it’s like to be hurt after tearing his ACL and missing his entire freshman campaign. He can sympathize. “We came in looking real optimistic with the three of us and we knew we could be special assuming we were all healthy,” he said. “We didn’t think Kyle and Nick would be hurt. We had to work around it, it’s been a lot for us supporting one another. Kyle was heart-broken by it and Nick is the same way. I feel terrible for them. I know they want to compete that’s why they’re out there.” Despite missing his teammates, Kato has not felt any added pressure. “I still gotta go out and do my job out there and throw the way I can,” he said. “I know there are other guys who can come in and relieve me if I need them. I have support in Tom (Niedermaier) and Johnny (Schroeder) and Dylan (Wood) and everyone else who throws. It stinks to have them out because we’re the top three, but there’s still guys behind me.” Kato has been consistently reliable. He threw five innings in his first two starts, six in his third and seven in each of the next four outings. His main pitches are fastball/curveball and he has added an unlikely high school pitch with a knuckler. At age 14, he saw a video of R.A. Dickey showing how to throw it, and adopted the grip. “I always thought it would be cool and I wanted to throw a knuckle ball,” Kato said. “I remember one game in eighth grade they let me throw it and I got

Bordentown pitcher Kyle Kato has been an ace on the mound for the Scotties this season. (Staff photo by Samantha Sciarrotta.) shelled. They didn’t let me throw it the next couple years. But it’s been working pretty well. I don’t throw it too often but it’s usually a good pitch to get guys to go back to the dugout and say ‘Hey he’s got a knuckleball,’ just to get it in their heads a little bit. “I played around with different release points and how to get my fingers on top or under the ball. Once the release point and the arm angle got into place I felt comfortable throwing it. Coach (Mike) Oliver said we’ll do it in the preseason, and it looked pretty good so we used it for the regular season.” Kato has also gone from a nonentity at the plate to an offensive force. Through the Scotties’ 12-7 start he was hitting .320 with 12 RBI, two doubles and 10 runs scored. Not bad for a guy who had nine official high school at-bats entering the year. But through the season’s first nine games he had just three hits in 25 at-bats, which computes to a .120 average. He had a chat with Oliver. “I said ‘Listen I don’t know what’s wrong, I can’t buy a hit,’” Kato recalled. “He’s like ‘Dude it’s front shoulder, keep it inside, drive the ball the other way.” I practiced it the next day.” The result was a 3-for-4 game against Audubon, and he hasn’t stopped raking. “I’ve been around .550 since Audubon,” he said. “Just one little thing like that. I’ve been focusing on trying to hit the ball the other way. I would naturally try to pull the ball ever since I was eight years old. Working the other side of the field turned it around for me. “ After hitting in the bottom third of the lineup most of his life, Kato was moved to fifth due to injuries and has responded despite seeing more difficult pitches than straight fastballs. “He’s been a pleasant surprise,” Glenn said. “He’s just a competitor. He gets in

there and he just wants to hit. Some hitters will over-think sometimes, but his first mentality is as a pitcher. So when he gets in the box, he doesn’t do that. He gets in there and just hits.” Kato grew up playing in the Bordentown Little League before moving on to travel ball. He also plays legion for Bordentown Post 26. His high school career was nearly derailed before it got started. While playing a backyard football game on a wet, rainy autumn day “wearing crummy shoes” he got tackled and suffered a torn ACL as a freshman. That sidelined him for the entire baseball season. “It was rough,” he said. “I knew it would be one year that I had to sit and watch. I think it held me back, because for nine months I wasn’t able to run or throw or anything. It taught me a lot of mental toughness about moving on and not giving up. There were times I was going to physical therapy three or four times a week. I was like ‘I don’t know if I want to do this anymore.’ It was killing me.” He gutted it out and played sparingly on varsity as a sophomore. That came after he suffered a broken foot suffered in February while playing pick-up bas-

ketball with the varsity hoop team. “Bad idea,” he said. “But it didn’t set me back that much. It wasn’t a bad break. I was back in a few weeks.” Kato became a regular in the rotation last year and went 3-1 with a 3.59 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 37 innings. This year, he has blossomed. “He’s a bulldog,” Glenn said. “He gets the ball and just doesn’t want to lose. Over the past two seasons he’s been that guy where I know we can hand him the ball in any game and he’s gonna give us a chance to win.” He is a winner in the classroom as well with a 4.1 weighted GPA. Kato will attend Purdue next year and, although he wasn’t recruited, will try out for the baseball team while majoring in aviation management. “There’s only a dozen schools in the country that have that,” he said. “I visited 10 of them and Purdue was the clear favorite for me. It’s all about, after four years, I have to have a job so I might as well go somewhere to get the education I want. If baseball comes with it that’s great. If it doesn’t, I guess that’s something I gotta deal with.” But he can always look back on a senior year in which he was flying high.

BRMS softball team powers through 11-1 season By Rich Fisher It was the end-of-the-year party for the Bordentown Middle School softball team, and a team photo was in order. The 8th-graders lined up in the back row, the unsuspecting 7th-graders were in the middle and the 6th-graders were in the front. “We all had a piece of cake,” 8thgrader Allison Hoppe said. “She said cheese and we all smashed it on (the 7th-graders) faces. They didn’t even know about it. Then everyone grabbed the rest of the cake and threw it at each other.” It’s that kind of story that makes it difficult to define the legacy of the 2019 Bobcats. Are they to be known as an outstanding team by virtue of their 11-1 record; or should they be defined as a high-spirited crew who loved to have food fights. How about combining the two and saying they will go down in the annals of BMS as fun-loving winners. It all starts at the top, with fourth-year coach Chelsea Kehr. “Coach Chelsea’s way of coaching made it really fun,” Hoppe said. “It made it almost like we weren’t just there to win every game, but we’re supposed to act as a team and have fun.” It’s a lesson the standout pitcher hopes to embrace moving forward. “I think all the things she’s taught us

The Bordentown Regional Middle School softball team finished the 2019 season with an 11-1 record. will help us throughout high school,” Hoppe said. “Not only in softball but how to have the attitude that just makes it fun but keeps it serious enough to win. “ The fact her players understood and embraced that philosophy probably makes Kehr happier than the 34-2 record her 8th-grade class registered over the past three years. In Kehr’s world, it’s great to win, but it’s even better to enjoy the journey. “If there’s one takeaway I try to give

them, it’s to remember it’s just a game,” the fourth-year coach said. “If you’re not having fun then you’re doing softball wrong. I tell them ‘You’re really not gonna remember the strikeouts, you’re not gonna remember the errors in the field, the thing you’re gonna remember is you had a food fight at your end-ofthe-year party. You’re gonna remember somebody tripped over first base and fell flat on their face. You’re gonna remember those things with your friends

more than you will the bad things that happened.’ “I always try to remind them of that —don’t take it so seriously. You’re not getting your college scholarship today. Just have fun with your friends. And this team was so much fun.” At the same time, the coach instills a work ethic that is necessary as they move up to the high school team, which happened to be the No. 1 seed in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III sectional tournament this year. It was also a reminder that last year’s 12-0 record would not be repeated just by showing up. “I told them ‘You have to remember that you have to get better, and that just because you did something great in your career doesn’t mean that you can’t always improve yourself and always be better than what they were last year,’” the coach continued. “I think the girls took that and ran with it. You could see the younger ones look at the eighth-graders and be like ‘They’re so good.’ I tell them ‘That could be your guys in two years, you just have to keep working as hard as you are.’” That kind of attitude is what Kehr calls “the beauty of Bordentown softball.” She lauds the parents who drive their children to hitting lessons and pitching clinics. She praises the recreation and travel ball coaches for establishing solid foundational skills that make her job that much easier.

“I only get them for a couple of months,” she said. “What they learn other places is passed down from grade to grade to grade and it’s so nice to see. They all can compete with each other and you can tell they all still love each other. That’s what breeds the winning kind of mentality in Bordentown.” Having mirror-image ace pitchers doesn’t hurt either. Hoppe was joined in the circle by twin sister Erin and the two are as different in styles as they are similar in looks. Allison went undefeated in middle school with a standout curve and screwball. This year she added a more effective change-up that stays down instead of getting up in a hitter’s power zone. Erin does not have quite as much zip on her ball but keeps it down in the zone. She is also extremely stoic, maintaining a poker face whether things are going good or bad. “They really complement each other well,” Kehr said. When they are not pitching, they are side-by-side with Allison on first and Erin at second. Playing short is the athletic Cadence Klemic, “who has a cannon arm” and who also saw some time as pitcher. When she threw, 6th-grader Kaitlin Hoppe —yes, she’s a sister—played shortstop and “man, is she good,” Kehr said. She also pitches, meaning the cupboard won’t be bare when big sisters graduate. “She’s probably one of best sixthgrade pitchers I’ve had come up,” Kehr said. “She is awesome. You could put her anywhere on the field and she’s one of those people that gets it. She tries hard no matter where you put her. She’s got a really good softball IQ. She just understands the game.” Lily Nucera handled most of the catching after not coming out as a 7th-grader. “She’s not a bad hitter but she really is a stud catcher for me,” Kehr said. “She did so great, people weren’t running on her. She didn’t even need to throw anybody out.” The remaining 8th-graders were Sam Stillwell, Mya Gronostajski and Angelina Demkowicz. The latter is one of just two players on the team who doesn’t play travel but in this, her only year with the Bobcats, she showed improvement, caught a few games, roped some line drive hits and “was always a battler.” Gronostajski was the main third baseman and the kind of hitter analyticscrazed MLB managers would love to have. Numerous times she would fall behind 0-2 only to work the count full and torture pitchers with foul balls until she got a ball to handle. Gronostajski also plays out of position, as she is usually and outfielder in travel. Stillwell was injured much of the year, but is probably the greatest symbol of this year’s team. “She played a great second base and she’s got one of the best personalities on the team,” Kehr said. “She keeps it light in the dugout, she’s always joking around. She’s the one who reminds people your coach can also be your friend as long as you respect them as a coach. She totally understands how to play pranks on coaches, how to joke around, call us out when we mess up and make it funny. She’s a hoot.” The cake-adorned 7th-graders fea-

tured outfielders Emeline Kovac, KC Benton and Lauren Scharko, and utility player Lilly Haines. Kovac is the team’s lone slap hitter and although she just began doing it last year, Kehr said she is making tremendous strides. Scharko and Benton are human vacuums in center and right field. “Between those two together, I don’t think we had a single ball drop in the outfield,” Kehr said. “I don’t think KC made an error and she has one of the best arms I’ve ever seen on a kid. Lauren is such a good outfielder. She reads the ball so well off the bat. It’s something you have or you don’t, and she just has it.” Haines is the team’s other non-travel player who has improved immensely over the season according to Kehr. She also understands what team spirit is all about. “She’s always positive, always happy, always cheering her friends on,” the coach said. “I always harp on the girls about how important it is to stay up in the dugout and really be positive talking to your friends all the time. She’s phenomenal at that.” A spirited 6th-grade class included Brielle Besserman, Natalie Crowell, Mackenzie Morton, Kendall Lampman and Bella Nucera (Lily’s sister). They were the heart of the Bordentown Little League state championship team last year. “Because we had such a strong seventh and eighth grade bench a lot of them didn’t play a lot this year,” Kehr said. “They got their innings here and there, but I would say they were some of the most positive people I’ve ever met. They were the funniest people on the bench. And you put any one of them in the game and they’ll get a hit. They were a class that took advantage of whatever was given to them.” Put it all together and it is a pretty good sign that the future looks as bright as the present for Scotties softball. “I’m really excited for next year,” Allison Hoppe said. “It’s cool we know some of the older girls. It will be fun to play with him.” Which is exactly what Kehr hopes for her players.
