By RichARD J. sKeLLy There is an adage in the music business: “When the musicians on stage are clearly having a good time, so does the audience.” That is certainly true of Gyrlband, a quartet of women who celebrated their seventh anniversary last month. The group was the idea of Bucks County-based singersongwriter Lisa Bouchelle, no stranger to the TrentonPrinceton-area nightclub and coffee house scene. While she is the only full-time musician in the band, she heaps praise on her bandmates. “The greatest thing about Gyrlband is we’re a democracy. We all bring our own talents to the band, including original songs, but then everybody adds to it and puts icing on the cake to our sound,” says Bouchelle on the patio at Hamilton’s Nottingham Tavern, where she is joined by the group’s newest member, drummer Dori Sabella. “It’s kind of like we’re four best friends. We’re sisters. We have four strong women in the band, yet it has lasted,” Bouchelle says, adding that those early critics who said Gyrlband wouldn’t last were wrong. Sabella, who will also be singing backup harmonies, agrees See GYRLBAND, Page 8

The art of restoration Hopkinson portrait gets a makeover By sAMANThA sciARROTTA When Bordentown Historical Society co-president Doug Kiovsky came across a painting of Francis Hopkinson in the society’s archives, he knew it couldn’t be shown in the state he found it. The portrait, painted by Bordentown artist Henry Hartman in the 1970s, was riddled with scratches, discoloration

and punctures in the canvas— hardly befitting of Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, composer and designer of the first American flag. So, with some teamwork, Kiovsky and the historical society started a GoFundMe to raise money to restore the painting in April, and the painting was returned good as new in mid-June. Kiovsky said he was thrilled with the final result, which was unveiled at the historical society’s meeting in June.

As younger residents have started to join the historical society, Kiovsky said the group has introduced more modern ideas, like raising money online through GoFundMe and establishing a social media presence. One member, Sharon Murray, had the idea to film Kiovsky as the Hopkinson painting was taken to Lawrence Art and Frame Company. “I’ve only been president since last fall, but we decided even though we had a lot of older members, the younger See PAINTING, Page 7

Like all Boy Scouts working toward the Eagle Scout rank, Nick Cutrupi had to complete a service project. He set his sights on the Bordentown Little League, an organization that both he and his younger brother have participated in. Cutrupi, a 15-year-old student at Notre Dame High School and Bordentown resident, raised over $2,300 to build a batting cage for the Bordentown Little League as a part of his Eagle Scout service project. Cutrupi, who is a member of Boy Scout Troop 13 in Bordentown, invested over 228 service hours in the building of the cage that he now gets to see young athletes enjoy. He has been involved with Boy Scouts for the past five and a half years, officially making Eagle Scout status last month. Eagle Scout is the highest rank that can be reached within the Boy Scouts of America, and it has been a goal of Cutrupi’s since grade school. “Ever since I joined on the first day I knew I wanted to become an Eagle Scout,” saidCutrupi, who is a sophomore at Notre Dame High School and has been a Bordentown resident his entire life. To become an Eagle Scout, a boy scout must first rise through the ranks of Scout, See CUTRUPI, Page 10

Seeking answers from the Bordentown Sewage Authority

I own a house in Bordentown City for the past 14 years. In April, I was going to put it on the market, but my neighbor informed me that our sewage lines are shared and I must get my own and burden the cost because the main line is under his house. I bought my house with an easement that included a shared sewage line. I contacted the Bordentown Sewage Authority to verify this information and Elizabeth Kwelty informed me this has been an ordinance since 1986, and if I did not get my own sewage line there would be a lien on my home. I also spoke with Richard Eustace at the BSA and he too told me this was true and to follow up with the city. I emailed the city and since I never received an acknowledgement, I went in person and spoke with Grace at the city clerk’s office. She stated she did not yet respond to my email because she was following up with the mayor, their lawyer and the utilities commissioner. She could not find this ordinance and stated it has been in effect since BSA took over in 1986 and I should speak with them since they were responsible since they took over. I also asked her if this law has been in effect for 33 years, and my house had been sold twice since then not including my sale, why am I the one with the burden? She claimed it was my ignorance and I should have discovered this at my purchase. I had my house inspected, a title search, title insurance and received a Certificate of Occupancy signed by Mayor Lynch himself. Therefore, I am unsure how it was my fault this was not discovered. I followed up with the BSA and again they told me I had to get my own sewage line. I asked why the previous owners were not enforced and I was told by the Bordentown Sewage Authority that they do not know who has a shared sew-

age line and who does not, they were only made aware in 2016 when the new owner that shares the same sewage line informed them, I would hope the sewage authority would know who has and has not a shared line. I realized I never actually saw this ordinance and sent an email to Bordentown Sewage Authority requesting it. The response I received was they had no comment. I replied back that I was not interested in your opinion but I was requesting a copy of this ordinance. She wrote back there was no ordinance and to ask Bordentown City. I wrote to Bordentown City and she told me there was no ordinance and to ask BSA. After getting tossed back and forth and running around in circles with them, I wrote my title insurance company and they received a reply there was no ordinance and I was not responsible. I wrote Mayor Lynch requesting an answer to why I was lied to and was given the run-around as well. He also told me this was not an ordinance but it will be one soon. I want the residents of Bordentown City to be aware of this ordinance they are going to pass and the unreasonable burden it will put on home owners. The cost of a job like this is about $10,000, enough to make people go bankrupt if they choose to sell, especially people who purchased their house at the height of sales. If Bordentown City wants to do this they should be responsible. I bought my house like everyone else with an easement that included a shared sewage line. Don’t let them approve this under your nose, be aware. Sher yl Bassman The Bordentown Current welcomes letters to the editor. Submissions must include the name, address and contact information of the author. Only your name will be published. Send letters to Samantha Sciarrotta at ssciarrotta@communitynews.org.

Bordentown Historical Society co-president Doug Kiovsky stands with a newly-restored painting of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. (Staff photo by Samantha Sciarrotta.) “Over the years, with a lot of historical societies, you don’t really have an adequate place to store ever ything,” Kiovsky said. “I looked upstairs about a year ago, and paintings were stacked on top of paintings, which is

not good, and this was like a canvas type. It had rip marks, scratch marks, ever ything. “If you have artifacts that just sit up there, they’re not properly conserved, they get beat up, scratched up. Then, when you want to do a rotating exhibit, they can’t do it because now it looks like crap. The chair needs to be fixed up or the painting needs to be fixed up, and then you say, ‘Well, I can’t put that up.’” That is exactly what happened with the Hopkinson painting. Kiovsky came aross it during preparations for a Battle of the Kegs event, and he thought it could be good to use, since some of Hopkinson’s songs were going to be included in the celebration. Once he saw the condition it was in, though, he knew it couldn’t be used—at least not yet. Kiovsky said the society plans on holding another GoFundMe in the fall. “We’re trying to mix these things up so it doesn’t become, like, going to the well every single time, ‘Oh my God, they’re asking for more money,’” he said. *** This summer, the Bordentown Historical Society has several open houses scheduled: July 6, July 13, Aug. 3 and Aug. 17. GYRLBAND cont. from Page 1 when Bouchelle says, “What sets us apart are our three-part harmonies. It’s one of our specialties.” The other members of Gyrlband, who switch off on lead vocals, are Trentonraised guitarist-songwriter Kim Yarson and Bordentown-area keyboardist-songwriter Sandy Zio. Like Bouchelle, both have been performing solo or with their own groups for years. Unlike the band members with area roots, Sabella grew up on Long Island. Her connection to the Gyrlband is drummer Joe DeAngelo. In addition to taking Sabella on as a student in 2006, DeAngelo supported the early manifestation of the Gyrlband while they searched for a woman drummer. “I came out to see Joe play, as I often did when I was taking lessons from him, down on Long Beach Island, and he introduced me to the girls,” she says. Sabella came to the area after dropping out of C.W. Post College in Long Island, working as a massage therapist, and then enrolling at St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing in Trenton. She now works for Penn Medicine in Plainsboro in their homecare division. “I always wanted to be a drummer but was never able to pursue it until I was an adult,” Sabella says. The reason, she continues, was because she was a girl. So she played bass trombone instead. Sabella, the youngest of three sisters, says her postman father and her chorus girl mother encouraged her musical

The idea to form Gyrlband came just before one of Ernie White’s annual Christmas concerts at an area radio show with Danny Coleman, host of the internet radio show “Rock On Radio.” Bouchelle says, “I took Sandy and [Bouchelle’s manager] Hal Selzer to the radio show and Kim Yarson was also there. We took a break, and it dawned on us we should form a band of our own, all

of originals since then. She is also continuing her musical education through the Berklee College of Music’s online program. Yarson says she is also interested in getting her songs placed in films and TV. Her biggest placement so far has been a song that was used on the soap opera The Young and the Restless. She also mentions her family. She’s been married for 22 years to Paul Jakubicki, an engineer, and has two sons, Joe, 16, who plays guitar, and Thomas, 13, who is interested in writing. A trip to Nashville in 1994 and attending Songwriters-in-theRound styled shows inspired Yarson to begin writing her own tunes. “I was writing poetry at the time and fell in love with the process of songwriting,” she says. “Before you know it, I bought a book on songwriting and I was off and running. It was a journey of constant learning. I didn’t know how to play guitar in 1994, so I learned. Then it was learning piano, and then co-writing with lots of people. I’m a quick learner.” Keyboardist and singer Sandy Zio, who lives in Bordentown, says she also has been writing her own songs for a long time. That include her early piano lessons, at seven, at her parents’ house

in Kinnelon, Morris County, where both her parents were real estate brokers. She says for years the songs were private. Then she saw Alice Leon’s band, After Alice, perform and was inspired to pursue her own gigs. “There was a period in my life for six years when I didn’t have cable TV. I wrote a lot of my songs then,” says Zio who works by day in IT at McGuire Air Force Base. “Now I need to turn my cable off again.” As a young adult she took piano lessons from Highland Park-based jazz pianist John Bianculli and credits him for teaching her a lot about blues and jazz. “Billy Joel was always a huge inspiration for me,” she says, “and John Bianculli played a big part as well.” Mixing classic rock favorites with original music written by Yarson and Zio suggests a balance about what to play and who should play it. “We’re always talking about that,” says Zio. “What song should we do next? There’s always a lot of chatter on stage. We’re women, after all. We’re not the type of band that plays one song after another. There’s a lot of banter. Our shows are free-spirited and free-wheeling, so we’re open to lots of different directions.”

PLANNING FOR TOOTH EMERGENCIES Academy Dental is a warm, inviting SPAthemed dentist facility in Hamilton, and is rated as one of the best places by Hulafrog for dental treatment. Dr. Navleen Thind, D.D.S. is a trusted dentist who practices adults and kids’ dentistry, along with her colleagues Dr. Steven Reff D.D.S., FICOI, (Dental Implants), Dr. Pankaj Puri D.D.S. (Orthodontics) and Dr. Gunjan Parmar D.D.S. and Dr. Christine Pereira, D.D.S. Today, Dr. Thind is sharing her four top tips to help you manage dental emergencies, and importantly, plan ahead so you are best equipped to handle one:

1. FIRST THINGS FIRST: Choosing a dentist, and trusting them to care for your happy, healthy smile is an important decision most families make. First things that come to mind are if you are adequately covered should you need any dental work. Selecting a dental insurance plan which has a wider selection of dentists can already set you far ahead. Certain plans limit acceptance at a specific dental practice, generally known as DMO or HMO plans. In comparison, PPO plans allow patients to visit any doctor who is in their network. In addition, most such plans also have out of network benefits, ultimately allowing patients to virtually see any dentist practice. When in an emergency, it is utmost important to have as much flexibility in who you can see for urgent care, so making the right decisions for yourself and your family are critical. Planning ahead, making the right choices and investing wisely in the selection of coverage that your family needs can yield great success later. 2. EMERGENCIES ON VACATION: Spring time is here, and soon you will be travelling for your next vacation. While away from home, it is important to be ready to handle any dental emergency. Chances are that travelling out of state, your insurance may have limitations, and it may be harder to find a dentist that can provide care. Supplemental dental insurance for travel can be a way to be prepared, and it is good to check out any dentists which accept your supplementary insurance should the need arise. However, having your family dentist reachable via online, phone or social media can be a great way to still get some advice, or tips while travelling. Keep your dentist’s emergency line handy, and be sure to like their social media pages so they know you well in advance when you need

them! Packing a small medical kit with some pain medicines, and gum ointment may help as an urgent palliative resource.

3. DENTIST VS EMERGENCY ROOM: A natural first response to any dental emergency is to call your family dentist for an urgent appointment. Most dental practices have limited office hours, with no late evening hours or weekend clinical days. This limits the availability of such practice to patients when they need them the most. Often, patients may call around for any other dentists who may accommodate them. In most situations, the hospital emergency room is the only way to seek urgent help. While helpful in terms of receiving urgent palliative care, most emergency rooms do not staff a dentist. After an expensive visit and long wait – patients are most certainly recommended to see a dentist as a follow-up for treatment. Academy Dental is open 7 days a week, which offers patients in Hamilton, Robbinsville, Lawrenceville and surrounding areas a great advantage to seek urgent care. Offering online appointment scheduling 24 hours a day provides great mental peace to patients that they have a secured spot to see the dentist at their earliest convenience. We welcome patients to check our extremely high levels of service and care, and benefit from our expanded coverage.

4. SECRET SAUCE (CONTINUING CARE): Routine dental visits are key, and can help detect problems early so they can be addressed. Continuing care is the most reliable way to stay abreast of your oral health, and be informed about any concerns that need immediate attention. Dr. Thind provides her patients counselling on how to care for their teeth in between their regular, bi-annual visits. Her team of excellent Dental Hygienists are caring, and ensure all patients are provided with the same, gentle care and attention. Getting healthy and staying healthy prevents undue stress and expense that a dental emergency visit may involve. Regular appointment reminders from Academy Dental via text, phone and Birthday Postcards provide our patients a fairly easy way to be connected, and attend routine checkups. Check with your family dentist if they are also setup to keep yourself informed and are vested in your healthy smiles the same way as you are!

CUTRUPI continued from Page 1 Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life Ranks, along with completing various merit badges and additional requirements, according to the Boy Scouts of America. At least 21 merit badges must be earned including, 13 required badges, such as First Aid, Camping, and Personal Fitness. A scout must be active in his Life Scout rank at for least six months leading up to his 18th birthday before making Eagle Scout rank. While Cutrupi was at his Life Scout rank, he had to embark on completing one of the largest requirements in the journey of becoming an Eagle Scout, which is the service project. It is considered the “ultimate application phase” of all the skills learned in scouting and employs the Scout oath of helping other people, according to the Eagle Scout workbook. Cutrupi was inspired for a project idea after his younger brother, who plays for Bordentown Little League, complained about the difficulties of practicing his baseball batting skills. He realized that if the league had a batting cage, it would be easier to practice hitting. The Eagle Scout workbook requires a ser vice project to be one that benefits another organization besides Boy Scouts such as a religious institution, any school or the world community itself, along with the project presenting “an oppor tunity for planning, development, and

For his Eagle Scout project, Bordentown resident Nick Cutrupi raised money for and helped build batting cages for use at Bordentown Little League. leadership.” Cutrupi had played for Bordentown Little League himself, and he decided to help out the community of young local Bordentown ball players including his brother in honing in their batting skills for his project by building a cage. “For most, the Eagle Scout service project becomes truly a defining moment in your quest for excellence,”

says Robert J. Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, in the workbook. A batting cage is often a pricey investment, so Cutrupi went out in his community to solicit donations from local Bordentown businesses and companies along with holding a fundraising night at Chickie’s and Pete’s, he said. An Eagle Scout project proposal must be approved beforehand. He began his

project after the approval in September of 2018 and completed the building of the cage in late March. “It was one of the best experiences of my life, building that cage,” Cutrupi says. Although he put in over 228 hours of service into the endeavor, there are no minimum required hours for the service project according to the Eagle Scout workbook. His fellow scouts of Troop 13, the Bordentown Little League, and members of his family assisted him in working on the cage after he received the materials for it from the manufacturer, he says. The Eagle Scout workbook allows others to help in the completion of the project, as long as the Scout serves as its leader. All $2,300 of the donations Cutrupi received went towards building the cage. “Everytime my family, or I go to watch my brother play in Little League, I always see at least one person use the cage,” he said. Outside of Boy Scouts, Cutrupi keeps active and is a member of the cross country and track and field teams at Notre Dame High School. Outside of school and Scouts, he enjoys camping, skateboarding and hanging out with his friends. Looking back on his service project and how much he enjoyed completing it, Cutrupi said, “I would love to help others with their projects, or even start a new one myself.”

The Clear Alternative to Braces

Aja Reeves (left) and Bailey Pierson, both javelin throwers, are two of the Bordentown Regional High School track and field team’s most dependable assets. (Photo by Rich Fisher.)

By Rich FisheR In track and field, it’s nice to have two quality athletes in the same event to push each other. In the case of the Bordentown High girls’ team, it’s even nicer when those athletes are close friends. When Bailey Pierson and Aja Reeves came out for track as freshmen, they didn’t know much about throwing the javelin or each other. Flash forward to this year, and the juniors are not only state qualifiers, but BFFs. “Freshman year we did track so we were kind of forced to be close because we were on the team,” Reeves said with a laugh. “But now we’re really close, we hang out all the time, we work out together, we do some throwing drills together. We got really close. Sometimes we’ll record each other, we’ll watch our throws and point out things we know we can fix in a nice, constructive way. We always look out for each other. And away from track, we hang out, go out to eat a lot.” Pierson agreed, saying, “We push each other a lot. We became best friends through track. Usually when we work out it’s for track. At track we’re best friends, outside of track we’re best friends and we’re constantly pushing each other.” Which obviously makes Scotties throws coach Bill Lloyd happy. “Whether they’re friends or not it’s always nice to have girls out there pushing each other,” Lloyd said. “One meet Aja takes first, the next week Bailey takes first. That’s something you don’t get too often, especially in a small school like this. And it’s just an added neat thing to have two friends have the same passion and drive as each other. That’s a

16Bordentown Current | July 2019

cool thing.” Both girls started throwing in ninth grade. Pierson came out because her brother had success throwing the javelin and discus at Bordentown. She took to it quickly. “It actually came pretty easy,” she said. “The first year was pretty good. I was throwing in the 90s and I kind of got better from there. It was fun. I tried disc but I didn’t really like it. I ran the 100 and 200 my freshman year, too.” Reeves was encouraged to come out by her basketball coach – who happened to be Lloyd. “A lot of girls I pull from basketball and say ‘Hey why don’t you try this out?’” Lloyd said. “It’s starting from scratch with everybody. That’s the fun part of my job. You get to see them progress from ‘What is a javelin?’ to these levels where they’re throwing elite javelin marks.” Both girls spent their freshman seasons learning the sport and the technique; and it was immediately apparent they were willing to do what it took. “They work hard,” head coach Dave Misselhorn said. “They’re great kids. They’ll stay late to work on it. You can’t ask for much more than that.” Pierson had a breakthrough season as a sophomore when she threw 79-4 to take fi fth at the West Deptford Relays, and then added nearly 20 feet to her throw a month later when she winged one 98-7 to win the Burlington County Patriot Division Championship. This past winter she did indoor track, running the 55, 200 and 400, but returned to strictly javelin this spring. Pierson defended her division championship crown with a personal best throw of 102-8 and advanced to the state

meet for the first time by finishing sixth in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II meet with a throw of 97-6. She took 15th in states with a 97-7. “It was pretty exciting getting to states,” she said. “I didn’t have enough faith in myself the year before, but I worked really hard this season so, getting there was a big accomplishment.” Pierson felt that faith in herself was the biggest thing she needed to work on heading into the season. “Just self-confidence, I didn’t believe in myself,” she said. “In the runway I just doubted myself and that’s what was holding me back. Mr. Lloyd was really helpful. A lot of coaches said I had a lot of potential so just believe in myself. Your form is most definitely the important thing, and you can’t think about anything else. You have to think about your form, your technique and just rip it.” With one year left, Pierson is hoping to improve her finish in states and possibly reach the Meet of Champions. “That’s the best of the best, I idolize those girls,” she said. “I can make it if I believe in myself.” Reeves believed herself to be a discus thrower when she first started, saying “I was more interested in discus. I tried both my freshman year. I still love discus, but I would say my jav is better.” Reeves showed just how good last year when she advanced to the states with a fourth-place, PR throw of 103-6 at the sectionals. She had a disappointing throw at the states, being a bit overwhelmed by the surroundings. “It was so fun, but it was scary,” she said. “The girls around me were way older. Everyone was seniors and I was a sophomore. I was a little nervous but I admired the girls and it taught me a lot of things.” Reeves came back with a vengeance this year. Despite suffering with some arm issues, she won the Burlington County championship with a season-best throw of 102-5. She tied that mark in the sectionals to take fourth place again, but struggled again at the Group II with an 87-2. “I wasn’t too happy with states,” she said. “I hurt my arm really bad, so my throwing wasn’t that great. But I was

happy to be there, because I worked real hard this season so I was just happy I made it. I could have done better if I hadn’t hurt my arm. The last week of the season at sectionals, the day after at practice I started feeling triceps pain, it was really weird. I tried to ice and ignore it, when states came it got super bad.” One good thing about this year’s state meet is she had Pierson to share it with. “That was a lot of fun,” Reeves said. “Last year it was just me and coach. So having my best friend there was really fun.” Lloyd was thrilled to see them both there. “They came in knowing the technical stuff this year, it was more like ‘What are the goals for this season?’” he said. “Aja made it to states, her goal was to get back. Bailey was like ‘I saw where Aja went, I want to do the same thing.” That was the goal, that’s where they wanted to be and they did things they weren’t expected to do along the way. Winning divisional and county championships were kind of like bonuses for them.” The coach feels that Reeves strongest event is still the discus and thinks she will excel with that in the future. She wants to do track in college, while Pierson is on the fence about it since she has already received a big academic scholarship award. Pierson was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Spanish Club, Teens on Fire and Students Against Violence Everywhere. Reeves also has other interests. She has played violin since age 9 and is also in Spanish Club and Teens on Fire. Both show a maturity beyond their years, which is why Lloyd is happy he gets them for one more season. “It’s really nice to have another year, because there is that leadership aspect too,” he said. “When you have freshmen coming in who have no clue what these things are, to be able to say ‘Bailey, Aja, can you take so and so and show them a couple things?’ That’s cool. You have miniature coaches on your hands and they both play that role.” And they love doing it together, like good friends are supposed to.

The Bordentown softball team’s biggest win of the season—and arguably in the history of the program—came when it defeated Robbinsville to win its first NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II title. But perhaps the most impressive victory came one day later when it showed it wasn’t willing to just settle for a sectional crown, no matter how long it took to get one. The Scotties could have suffered a serious letdown after defeating a Ravens team that had plagued them in the states through previous seasons. Or they could have looked past a Delran team that they had already beaten, 3-1, on April 16. Instead, Bordentown stormed to a 14-0 lead after two innings en route to a 15-0 victory in the Group II semifinal. “I think after winning the Robbinsville game it really pumped the girls up,” coach Nicole O’Leary said. “They know they’re a good team and they just had to come out and play their game every game. And they just continued to stay on that high note and on fire. They came out the next day continuing to do that.” Senior third baseman Michaela Luyber said a letdown was never conceivable. “After Robbinsville we were just like, ‘No Bordentown team has ever done this and made it this far, there’s no point in stopping now,’” Luyber said. “We just kept working as hard as we possibly could. I think after that win against Robbinsville it fueled us even more.” That energy actually sparked the Scotties to a 1-0 lead in the state final at Kean University, when senior catcher Mackenza Goleniecki hit a secondinning homer against Ramsey. But the Rams tied it in the third and won on a walk-off single in the seventh as Bordentown’s first trip to the finals ended in heartbreak. One thing was certain—the Scotties proved they belonged. “It definitely is disappointing, you get so far and you know the girls played well and it just didn’t fall the way you wanted it to,” O’Leary said. “Ramsey was a good team as well. If we played them a bunch of times it would fall a different way each time. It was a matter of who gets that final push, Unfortunately they did. But I couldn’t ask for much more, (Bella) Pisapia pitched a great game, the girls hit well, both teams played defensively well, they just had that one extra hit that pushed them through.” It hurt, but it didn’t take long for the

team to respond in a positive manner. “Right after that hit I think we all kind of felt that was the end of the world,” Luyber said. “A lot of us got really emotional after that, but by the time we got back on the bus and we were all reflecting back on the season, there was too much to be proud of to stay upset over that moment. That’s a moment we should be proud of along with all the other accomplishments, rather than dwell on it (negatively).” Luyber was exactly right, as this season will go down as the greatest in program history. Bordentown entered the campaign on a run of state tournament frustration. Over the past five years the Scotties were 80-31. They were beaten once in the sectional quarterfinals, twice in the semifinals and lost twice to Robbinsville in the finals. O’Leary was taking over the team full-time after serving as co-coach the previous years, and a strong nucleus was returning, including co-captains Luyber and Goleniecki, senior first baseman Annabella Marino, senior designated player Jenna Ryan, Pisapia and sophomore second baseman Hailey Cope. They were joined by a trio of freshman who all started—rightfielder Lina Marino, shortstop Brianna Fischer and leftfielder Sofia Peterson. A new coaching staff included Kara Lynch, Rachel Gagliardo and Anastasia Salera. “Coming into the season it was definitely exciting,” O’Leary said. “I was a little nervous, obviously, the first year where all the responsibility is mine. I knew I had a good group of girls coming back that I already established a good relationship with. It was just kind of seeing what new players were coming in and just meshing it all together. “Fortunately we had a really good group of girls, and the new coaches that joined the program were really great as well. Everyone just kind of settled in together.” Luyber said the team was confident, but the players went beyond what even they hoped for. “We weren’t sure we were gonna be able to make this much noise,” she said. “I knew we were gonna definitely be successful with our season, but we were a lot more successful than I think anyone could have thought.” That success was going to come from the tournament. Bordentown had already established itself as a crew that could win a lot of regular-season games, but still had to get over the hump.

‘We kind of knew from the jump this season would be fun. No matter where we made it to, we would have a good time.’ –Bordentown softball player Michaela Luyber

DANCE CAMP Beginning Dance Camp & Intensive 9am to 3pm - Monday thru Friday July 8th thru July 19th Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary & Acro 2 Full weeks, 1 full week or 1/2 days avail. Before and after care avail. The Bordentown Regional High School softball team just wrapped up one of its most successful seasons ever, finishing the season one win away from a state title. And when they finally did, it wasn’t without some adversity in the sectional final. The Scotties jumped to a 6-0 lead on Robbinsville before the skies opened in the bottom of the third. The game was suspended until the next day, leaving Bordentown still waiting and hoping. “We had a lot of talks, saying we have to stay the same way, you can’t assume that we won the game,” Luyber said. “I think a lot of the girls felt good leaving that night but, we were all kind of nervous coming back the next day. It’s hard to get that lead and play the same way the next day, but it didn’t stop us.” It sure didn’t. Pisapia threw three more scoreless innings and the Scotties scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to end it on the mercy rule. In winning its first sectional, Bordentown also unseated the defending two-time champs. “We had girls from previous Bordentown teams messaging us, wishing us luck,” Luyber said. “Everyone was watching that game. Winning it was a feeling like I never had before. We went out and put everything we had on the line, we played as hard as we possibly could and it gave us good results in the end.” O’Leary could not have been prouder that the Ravens jinx had been lifted. “It definitely has been a goal for a while, being that we’ve seen them in many of those final rounds over the last few years,” she said. “It’s always been a big mental game, we know they’re good, they know we’re good, they’ve just always had that finish. Definitely winning that was a huge excitement and success for the girls and the program.” It is a program that appears to be on solid ground, despite the loss of the four seniors. Luyber will play at Stockton, Goleniecki at Rowan College-Burlington County and Marino at Kean. Along with Ryan they combined for 96 hits, 19 doubles, 14 home runs and 91 RBI. “They’re just four really great girls,” O’Leary said. “On the field they just perform really well, but off the field they’re great kids, they’re good students. They brought a lot of leadership and heart to this team and they will definitely be missed.” Indeed they will. But Luyber is the first to point out that there is plenty of

talent coming back, starting with Pisapia. The hurler was 13-5 with 192 strikeouts and hit .276 with 17 RBI. “She’s definitely a natural leader on the field and off; not only with her talent but the way she handles herself and carries herself,” Luyber said. “She has so much talent, and she helps the other players as well. She’s not about herself even though she knows what she can do. She makes sure everyone’s in the game together. She’ll definitely be a lot of help to them next year.” Fischer and Lina Marino both return after hitting over .400 and Cope hit .380. Both Luyber and O’Leary praised the freshmen for their immediate contributions. “The three of them came in and not only helped offensively and defensively, but they molded and meshed with the team,” the coach said. “It made the whole team able to accomplish what they did.” Luyber added, “I told them ‘You three came in and made such a difference in this program in just this one year. And believe it or not you probably still had a few nerves. It was your first year playing high school ball. So next year it’s gonna be a completely different game to you.’” “And they have a few good players coming in as freshmen next year,” Luyber added. “The freshmen this year were able to fill in the spots we needed and those freshmen next year will be able to do the same filling in for us.” The program is indeed on solid ground with all the work and success being achieved in the rec and middle school programs. “When they start in middle school all the way to high school, it definitely builds and starts getting those few years of them working together,” O’Leary said. “They’re already kind of comfortable when they get to high school.” They certainly looked it this year, as a good time was had by all. “I never saw a group of girls click so easily and so fast with each other,” Luyber said. “We kind of knew from the jump this season would be fun. No matter where we made it to, we would have a good time.” Turns out those good times rolled within a whisker of becoming a state champ in a Scotties season like no other.
