From eyesore to eatery Sports bar to occupy USA Country Diner lot on Route 130 By roB antheS

ranthes@communitynews.org

The USA Country Diner has sat vacant for 15 years along Route 130 in Robbinsville, but the lot won’t be abandoned for much longer. Demolition has started at the property, with township officials saying the diner will be knocked down completely. A new building housing a casual restaurant and sports bar will replace the diner. After years of work to renew the property, Robbinsville

Township council acknowledged this important step during its June 13 meeting. The planning board previously approved a developer’s agreement with Akal Estates, LLC last year. Akal Estates bought the 2-acre lot with the diner at 1380 Route 130 in February 2017 for $1.25 million. It had been owned by Chrysoula LLC since December 2006. Akal Estates owns other properties in the area, according to real estate records, including 3666 Klockner Road in Hamilton, home to City Auto Center II. The eatery would expand a growing dining scene in town. Just last month, Robbinsville welcomed a new addition when

PJ’s Pancake House opened May 28. For more on PJ’s, see Page 15. The diner’s demolition also is another step in the progress being made on Route 130 within Robbinsville Township. A Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram car dealership plans to open in late 2019 on the northbound side of the road. In Windsor, construction will start this summer on a new gas station with a bagel shop and convenience store. Then, in 2020, a Wawa gas station and market will go up at the intersection of Route 130 South and Meadowbrook Road. Next to Wawa will be additional retail sites. There are no details yet on potential tenants.

New roles, familiar faces Pair of residents are ‘go-to people’ in prosecutor’s office By JULia marnin

It was not a typical Mother’s Day for Amy Devenny when her role as one of the top prosecutors in Mercer County required her to rush out to a murder scene at 3 in the morning. It is not unusual for her to be called in when a major crime occurs. Luckily, she made it home by 7 a.m., before her two daughters realized she was gone. Devenny’s friend and fellow top prosecutor Stephanie Katz can relate to the demands of the job, as they pursue justice prosecuting offenders for the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. Both Robbinsville residents

were promoted on May 1. Katz was named first assistant prosecutor, with Devenny assuming Katz’s prior position of deputy first assistant prosecutor. “This office stands out from other counties in that there are many women at the top of the office,” Devenny says. Head prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri was in charge of their recent promotions. “I’ve been in the office for 23 years, and we’ve all come up through the ranks together,” he says. As first assistant prosecutor, Katz does not have a typical dayto-day schedule. She oversees the office’s investigative units, so her work can vary from being called to a crime scene at any time, to handling meetings at the office, to observing court proceedings, to spending

an entire day at her desk with phone calls and emails. “The first assistant prosecutor is a critical pick for any county prosecutor because, in the prosecutor’s absence, it’s the first assistant who runs the day-to-day operations of the office,” Onofri says. Katz has spent 11 years total in the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. After her first five years, she left to work for a private practice firm called McManimon and Scotland, handling public finance. She returned in 2004, and has worked for many of the office’s units: Juvenile, Domestic Violence, Trial Team, Special Victims, Project Safe Neighborhoods, Homicide and Special Investigations. Governor signs Sami’s Law

Penn Medicine and Becker ENT have joined forces to continue their mission to deliver outstanding, compassionate, and convenient care to the residents of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Gov. Phil Murphy signs Sami’s Law rideshare safety legislation June 20, 2019 at Robbinsville town hall while Sen. Linda Greenstein, First Lady Tammy Murphy, Sydney Josephson, Marci Josephson, Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo, Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried, Seymour Josephson and Assemblyman Daniel Benson watch on. Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation during a June 20 ceremony in Robbinsville to enhance safety for rideshare passengers by requiring additional identification for drivers. The bill’s passage and signing follows the tragic death of Samantha “Sami” Josephson, a Robbinsville resident and student at the University of South Carolina, who mistakenly entered a car she thought was her rideshare. “This is a bittersweet day for the Josephsons. We want to thank the Assembly and Senate for unanimously passing Sami’s Law,” the Josephson family said in a statement. “We appreciate Governor Murphy accommodating us by signing the bill in Robbinsville, Samantha’s hometown. We are proud that New Jersey has taken the lead in making rideshare safer for everyone. We also want to thank our family, friends, and community for supporting us through this tough time.” The law requires rideshare companies to issue additional identification materials to drivers to help passengers correctly identify their vehicle. First, rideshare companies must issue two identifying markers to each driver to be displayed on the front windshield and rear window. Second, rideshare companies must create and provide every driver with two copies of a two-dimensional barcode or other machine-readable code that passengers can scan to confirm the identity of the vehicle. Third, rideshare companies shall produce and issue two credential placards to be displayed on the driver and passenger side rear windows that include the driver’s name, photo, and license plate number. Drivers who fail to comply with these provisions are subject to a fine of $250, and rideshare compa-

nies that fail to comply with these provisions can have their permit to operate in New Jersey suspended or revoked. The new requirements take effect nine months following the date of enactment, which would be March 2020. A similar piece of legislation, also named “Sami’s Law,” was recently introduced at the federal level cosponsored by Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker in the U.S. Senate, and led by Representative Chris Smith in the U.S. House of Representatives. Sponsors of the state legislation include Sen. Linda Greenstein, and Assemblymen Daniel Benson and Wayne DeAngelo.

MCPO continued from Page 1 leader, chief of the PSN Unit, chief of the Domestic Violence unit and chief of the Special Investigations Unit. “There’s great things about each unit and they have their own difficulties but for me, working with victims was always something I got a lot out of,” she says. “As gut wrenching as some of those cases can be, you really can make a difference.” While serving as chief of special investigations Katz, along with assistant prosecutor John Boyle and Lt. Eric Hastings, prosecuted the only racketeering case handled by the MCPO in recent memory. As deputy first assistant prosecutor, Katz was instrumental in developing bail reform protocols and teaching the new process to the many police departments in Mercer County. As deputy first assistant prosecutor, Katz was in charge of all the major crimes. Now, Devenny has stepped into those shoes. Devenny began her career at the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office in 1999. She has since worked in many units throughout the office, including Juvenile, Grand Jury, Trial Team, Domestic Violence, Special Victims and Internal Affairs. She has also been a member of the

Mercer County Homicide Task Force. Devenny has tried several homicides to conviction, including her most recent trial in 2018, where the defendant was convicted of murder for shooting an innocent victim in Trenton on his 29th birthday. She has also served as the chief of the Juvenile Unit, chief of the Domestic Violence Unit, been a trial team leader, and head of Internal Affairs. Like Katz, Devenny was instrumental in the implementation of bail reform and currently serves on the officer-involved shooting team. She has run the office intern program for years, which has allowed her to mentor hundreds of young lawyers, many of whom were later hired as assistant prosecutors in the office. Devenny was promoted to chief of Trial Teams in 2015, and in 2016 she was named as executive assistant prosecutor. “Her elevation to deputy first assistant prosecutor creates that continuity that we are looking for in the office,” says Onofri. “She has been in every unit and has handled every kind of case you can imagine.” Her promotion to her new position means she is involved with all the major crimes such as homicide, child abuse and sexual assault and economic crimes.

Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri (second from left) with new chief of county detectives Tracey McKeown, first assistant prosecutor Stephanie A. Katz and deputy first assistant prosecutor Amy Devenny. “For me, I always thought the sexual assault and child abuse cases were, if not the most important (cases), certainly up there with homicide,” Devenny says. “They’re such difficult cases to prosecute that not everyone can do them because of the nature of them. They take a piece of you, to see the kind of damage that has been done to victims.” Katz always knew she wanted to be involved with law enforcement. She was inspired by her father, who worked as a municipal prosecutor in Trenton for 31 years. “I was always fascinated by what he did, from a really young age,” says Katz, who grew up in Ewing. One of her first jobs in high school involved her with law enforcement when she worked for the deputy superintendent at the New Jersey state police. “I loved it. Just dealing with that environment was fabulous,” she says. Katz majored in English and minored in political science at Rutgers University in New Brunswick before going to Seton Hall law school. It wasn’t until she completed her clerkship with criminal Judge Paulette Sapp Peterson in 1995 that she truly realized that she wanted to be a prosecutor like her father. “I like coming to work everyday. I love that I don’t know what I’m going to walk into, but at the end of the day, even if something terrible has happened, to someone hopefully we can do right by that person,” Katz says. Devenny was never one of those children who knew what they wanted to be as she was growing up in Mount Laurel. Now, she is proud to demonstrate to her two young daughters that they can grow up to be anything that they want, even in a male-dominated field like hers. She went to Rutgers University in New Brunswick to study history. In her junior year, she took an elective called Women in the Law, which piqued her interest in criminal justice. She went on to attend law school at Seton Hall University, and after graduating, she completed a clerkship with Judge Andrew J. Smithson before beginning work at the prosecu-

tor’s office in 1999. Devenny says she considered becoming a public defender because she received offers from private firms offering three times the salary of a prosecutor. But she chose the prosecution side on philosophical grounds. “I believe that we are the gatekeepers to justice. Our job isn’t to do right by a client or by a victim for that matter, our job is to just do the right thing,” Devenny says. Given the demanding hours prosecutors and public defenders work, Devenny says she would rather do what she loves instead of work for the salary. “You’ll never get bored and you’ll never get rich being a prosecutor,” she says. “If I’m going to be doing something for 50, 60, 70 hours a week, it’s got to be something I love.” In her free time, Devenny spends time with her two daughters, traveling to their soccer and softball tournaments. Katz, who has a son who plays baseball, says one of the toughest things about her job is maintaining the balance between work and family. “As a mother, you want to be there and you don’t want to miss things, but he gets it and he never gives me a hard time. He understands that what I do is important,” Katz says about her son. Outside of their work, both Katz and Devenny enjoy exercising and spending time with friends and family as a way to decompress from their jobs. Katz has known Devenny since she began her clerkship, and says that they both operate on the same wavelength. Onofri agrees. “They work incredibly well together, to the point that they can anticipate each other’s responses and advice that is going to be given,” he says. “Both Katz and Devenny are widely considered among the go-to people in our office.” Devenny says that she, Katz, and another colleague make a pact every year to go on a girls’ trip as another way to decompress. They have plans to book an upcoming trip to the Bahamas in October.

PLANNING FOR TOOTH EMERGENCIES Academy Dental is a warm, inviting SPAthemed dentist facility in Hamilton, and is rated as one of the best places by Hulafrog for dental treatment. Dr. Navleen Thind, D.D.S. is a trusted dentist who practices adults and kids’ dentistry, along with her colleagues Dr. Steven Reff D.D.S., FICOI, (Dental Implants), Dr. Pankaj Puri D.D.S. (Orthodontics) and Dr. Gunjan Parmar D.D.S. and Dr. Christine Pereira, D.D.S. Today, Dr. Thind is sharing her four top tips to help you manage dental emergencies, and importantly, plan ahead so you are best equipped to handle one:

1. FIRST THINGS FIRST: Choosing a dentist, and trusting them to care for your happy, healthy smile is an important decision most families make. First things that come to mind are if you are adequately covered should you need any dental work. Selecting a dental insurance plan which has a wider selection of dentists can already set you far ahead. Certain plans limit acceptance at a specific dental practice, generally known as DMO or HMO plans. In comparison, PPO plans allow patients to visit any doctor who is in their network. In addition, most such plans also have out of network benefits, ultimately allowing patients to virtually see any dentist practice. When in an emergency, it is utmost important to have as much flexibility in who you can see for urgent care, so making the right decisions for yourself and your family are critical. Planning ahead, making the right choices and investing wisely in the selection of coverage that your family needs can yield great success later. 2. EMERGENCIES ON VACATION: Spring time is here, and soon you will be travelling for your next vacation. While away from home, it is important to be ready to handle any dental emergency. Chances are that travelling out of state, your insurance may have limitations, and it may be harder to find a dentist that can provide care. Supplemental dental insurance for travel can be a way to be prepared, and it is good to check out any dentists which accept your supplementary insurance should the need arise. However, having your family dentist reachable via online, phone or social media can be a great way to still get some advice, or tips while travelling. Keep your dentist’s emergency line handy, and be sure to like their social media pages so they know you well in advance when you need

them! Packing a small medical kit with some pain medicines, and gum ointment may help as an urgent palliative resource.

3. DENTIST VS EMERGENCY ROOM: A natural first response to any dental emergency is to call your family dentist for an urgent appointment. Most dental practices have limited office hours, with no late evening hours or weekend clinical days. This limits the availability of such practice to patients when they need them the most. Often, patients may call around for any other dentists who may accommodate them. In most situations, the hospital emergency room is the only way to seek urgent help. While helpful in terms of receiving urgent palliative care, most emergency rooms do not staff a dentist. After an expensive visit and long wait – patients are most certainly recommended to see a dentist as a follow-up for treatment. Academy Dental is open 7 days a week, which offers patients in Hamilton, Robbinsville, Lawrenceville and surrounding areas a great advantage to seek urgent care. Offering online appointment scheduling 24 hours a day provides great mental peace to patients that they have a secured spot to see the dentist at their earliest convenience. We welcome patients to check our extremely high levels of service and care, and benefit from our expanded coverage.

4. SECRET SAUCE (CONTINUING CARE): Routine dental visits are key, and can help detect problems early so they can be addressed. Continuing care is the most reliable way to stay abreast of your oral health, and be informed about any concerns that need immediate attention. Dr. Thind provides her patients counselling on how to care for their teeth in between their regular, bi-annual visits. Her team of excellent Dental Hygienists are caring, and ensure all patients are provided with the same, gentle care and attention. Getting healthy and staying healthy prevents undue stress and expense that a dental emergency visit may involve. Regular appointment reminders from Academy Dental via text, phone and Birthday Postcards provide our patients a fairly easy way to be connected, and attend routine checkups. Check with your family dentist if they are also setup to keep yourself informed and are vested in your healthy smiles the same way as you are!

PJ’s Pancake House opens Robbinsville location By Rob Anthes

ranthes@communitynews.org

Finally. More than two years after announcing its expansion into Robbinsville, PJ’s Pancake House has opened the doors to its new location on Main Street, near Papa’s Tomato Pies. The restaurant’s first day was May 28. The Robbinsville location is the fifth PJ’s and the largest yet, with a total of 200 seats—140 inside and 60 on a covered patio outside. There also are PJ’s Pancake House restaurants in Princeton, West Windsor, Ewing and Kingston. The Robbinsville PJ’s Pancake House has the same menu as the others, with a focus on sandwiches and breakfast foods. But the Robbinsville location has been a different animal right out of the gate, with much stronger lunch and dinner crowd than a typical PJ’s, owner John Procaccini said. The new restaurant deviates from the usual PJ’s script in a few other ways. The most apparent has been the addition of a sports bar element at night. Procaccini said the tavern aspect of the restaurtant was conceived to bring in people in the hours other locations would see

its crowds taper off. He said it’s worked so far, with the bar packed with patrons watching a Women’s World Cup soccer game in the middle of the afternoon last month. “They said this is what they wanted—a local place to hang out,” he said. PJ’s has Happy Hour specials that run from 2 till 7 p.m. five days a week, as well as a live music series Friday nights, from 8 to 11 p.m. Bands are booked through the end of the year. The Robbinsville PJ’s also has two private rooms in the back of the restaurant outfitted with 80-inch televisions. Procaccini admitted this was a new concept for a PJ’s restuarant to attempt, but said his goal was to provide a full-service space for corporate meetings, bridal showers, birthday parties and other private events. The restaurant has been long-awaited in the community, with residents tracking the project through its several delays. Its initial September 2017 target opening was delayed after the township stopped construction early on. Robbinsville Township director of community development Hal English said the developer for the plaza— of which PJ’s and Papa’s Tomato Pies are part—began to build without signed plans. Entire structures had to be redone

The Robbinsville PJ’s Pancake House is much larger than other restaurants of the same name, and features a full bar and two private rooms. It opened after two years of construction, on May 28, 2019. throughout the complex. “There were glitches, more than normal, I think,” English said in September 2018. “One of the buildings came out a

foot higher than it was supposed to, if you look at one of the buildings in the back. One of the buildings was leaking water when it rained. Bricks falling off.” It sure seemed like the issues had been solved by summer 2018, with Procaccini saying then he was confident his eatery would open by late fall. English echoed that at the time, saying the township had the sense PJ’s would be open by the end of 2018. Instead, the end of 2018 became the end of May 2019. In the meantime, the rest of the plaza has come to life. Former Town Center mainstay VC Salon has moved into the center’s anchor fronting Main Street and rebranded as Coterie 17. A realty firm and a spine doctor have also opened in the center’s new buildings. Papa’s Pizza remains in the building formerly occupied by Ace Hardware. Soon, the long, blue building next door at 13 Main Street will be demolished, making the entire shopping center visible from roadway and allowing more space for parking. PJ’s Pancake House is located at 17 Main Street in Robbinsville. Phone: 609-7724755. Web: pancakes.com. Hours: MondayThursday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Tuffy relaxed before embarking on Division I career By Rich Fisher Doug Herrin knew he was getting a good one when McGwire Tuffy decided to play for his Hightstown Post 148 baseball team this summer. If Tuffy impacts Herrin the way he affected Hun School coach Tom Monfiletto, the American Legion manager is in for a more memorable experience than even he imagined. “Coaching him,” Monfiletto said, “has been one of the greatest joys of my life.” That statement has as much to do with Tuffy’s personality and dedication as it has to do with his statistics. And that’s saying something, considering the numbers the Robbinsville resident put up during four years at Hun. Tuffy capped his Raiders career by hitting .467 with 11 extra-base hits and 28 RBI while going 18-for-18 in stolen base attempts as a senior. Over four years, Tuffy hit .370 with 29 extra base hits, 56 RBI and 68 steals in 69 attempts. “His swing should be played on a loop in a museum,” Monfiletto said. “No artist in history could create something as beautiful.” One man’s artistry is another man’s football game. “He plays baseball like he’s a line-

backer,” said Hun teammate Danny Melnick, who is on Hamilton Post 31 this summer. “He attacks everything, he’s super aggressive at the plate and on the base paths. You could put him anywhere on the field, and he can play. He’s got the dirtiest uniform on the field. Every time he gets up, I think he’s gonna get on, and when he gets on he steals.” Having players like Tuffy and Melnick is good news for legion baseball, which has had dwindling enrollment throughout the decade due to travel ball and showcases. Tuffy played travel the past two years with the Diamond Jacks in Flemington. Once he earned a scholarship to Quinnipiac University, McGwire had nothing left to prove to recruiters and decided to play with the closest team possible, since Robbinsville does not have a legion program. “I was just looking for places to play,” he said. “I talked to my friends, coaches and family and thought it was best to stick around home for the last summer (before college). I talked to coach Doug last year, he told me about how some of the Robbinsville guys were gonna play and I just wanted to reunite with them. Tyler Lehman is pitching with us every four years, he’s an old friend of mine. Some

We’re just trying to make the best of it. “I just want to stay home one last summer and hopefully play in a college league next year. I think it’s great for

kids to come back home and enjoy it.” That came as good news to Herrin, whose squad is back in the Mercer County league after being unable to field a team last year. “It’s a pleasure having him around,” Herrin said. “He’s an all-around good player. I’ve been after him for three years and finally got him from the travel ball scene. It’s fantastic.” Tuffy was a perennial all-star while playing for the Robbinsville Little League. He also played travel ball with the Hamilton A’s and Gallagher Baseball. At age 10, he attended baseball camp at Hun and immediately fell in love with it. Three years later, he embarked on a high school baseball career and never looked back. Hun won the NJSIAA Prep A title all four of Tuffy’s years and reached the Mercer County Tournament semifinals this spring. “Honestly, it was a dream come true,” Tuffy said. “Coach Mono, Coach Garrison are just the greatest guys. We knew the program was going in the right direction my freshman year. It was just kind of everyone getting together and buying into the philosophy of being a team, doing everything together. We built a strong culture. By senior year, it was something spe-

cial. It was a great ride.” It was Tuffy who helped make it great, serving as team captain his final two years while setting an example. “McGwire has been the heart and soul of our program for the last few years,” Monfiletto said. “He plays the game harder and with more passion than anyone I’ve ever coached. He takes a tremendous amount of pride in being in the best physical shape possible and being the best infielder and hitter that he can possibly be. He leads by actions and by example and puts others before himself. For the rest of time when people think of someone to associate Hun baseball with, they will think of McGwire Tuffy.” High praise indeed; and much of what Monfiletto said is echoed by Herrin. “He’s just a great leader,” the manager said. “He leads by example, he hustles and he hits the ball hard. He tries to do damage at the plate, goes up there with a plan. He’s just a great all-around kid.” This is actually Tuffy’s second season of playing legion. As freshmen,

he and Danny Melnick—who is also headed to Quinnipiac—both played for Princeton Post 76. “It was one of those things where travel was a little too early for us but we just wanted to play every day so Princeton was an option because some of our buddies from Hun were playing,” Tuffy said. “It definitely helped. It was sort of my foundation as a young high school player. You’re playing every day, getting reps, staying into it. It was good.” Next came the Diamond Jacks, which is where Tuffy put his wares on display for colleges. “Playing at Diamond Nation every weekend was beneficial because every coach was at Diamond Nation every weekend,” he said. “It was easier to go right there instead of traveling around the country.” Now it’s back to legion. Hightstown stumbled out of the gate with a 1-5 record, but Herrin feels with a guy like Tuffy on board, Post 148 can still be successful. “We have the opportunity when we’re all here to be a pretty competitive team,”

he said. “With McGwire here leading us toward it, there’s definitely hope.” Tuffy will revert to playing against Melnick, a former Nottingham Little League star, after being his teammate for four years. “I always respected him, but you know that whole rivalry with Nottingham and Robbinsville,” Tuffy said with a laugh. “Just them in general gave me a bad taste, but I respect him, he’s a great player.” After this summer, the two will be teammates again in college. Tuffy had offers from Quinnipiac and St. Joe’s and chose the Connecticut school. Soon after he committed, Melnick also decided to go there. “Growing up playing against him and car-pooling to Hun with him every day for two years, he’s become one of my best friends,” Tuffy said. “It’s a dream come true, again. Not many people can say they’re going to college to play baseball with one of their best friends. We both have a lot of work to do but I’m just excited to go along with him for the ride.” Tuffy grew up playing second base

but has been at shortstop the past few years. He thinks he will be a utility man in college, saying, “it’s more like I’ll go anywhere I can to get into the lineup.” Playing Division I baseball has been Tuffy’s goal since childhood and he worked relentlessly to achieve it. He never let the fact that he stands just 5-foot-8 hold him back. In fact, it moved him forward. “I use that as motivation to kind of hit the gym and get strong,” he said. “Obviously I’m not gonna be much taller than this. But the stronger I am, the more beneficial it is. Size does not matter in baseball and I’ve used it as my motivation to get better every day.” For now, he will embrace a laid back summer before embarking on a MAAC baseball career. “I just want to play every day, keep swinging it,” Tuffy said. “Pitching is pitching, you can’t really complain about that. I’ll be happy to stick around for this last summer and just enjoy it. No more travel and all that. I’m all set.”

Record-setting Ondy puts his speed to good use By Rich Fisher For years, CJ Ondy kept fighting his destiny. Despite every coach he had being impressed by his speed, running track was never on his radar. Getting his head knocked around, however, changed that way of thinking drastically. “I played football and lacrosse for a while, I played baseball for a long time and I was always told a consistent thing through all those sports is that I was really quick off the line or out of the batter’s box,” the recent Robbinsville High graduate said. “That’s one thing that stayed consistent is they noticed how fast I was.” That ability didn’t just appear in high school. “I remember at Sharon School, we’d do these little races down the field, all our friends would do it, and I’d always win,” Ondy said. “Everyone would say, ‘Oh you need to race CJ to see how fast you actually run.’” Despite having the size of a small wide receiver, Ondy was put at center for the Ravens freshman football team because of his ability to explode off the line. “I was one of the smallest guys on the field when I played center,” he said. “It was my first year of playing football, and they put me at that spot. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I did pretty well. That’s when I got my third concus-

Robbinsville High School’s CJ Ondy competes at New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina. sion. I played lacrosse in the spring and hurt my elbow. I was done with contact sports, and my parents were fine with that. Let’s do a sport with no contact.” Common sense led Ondy to the track, and it was almost like the sport was saying, “Where the heck have you been?”

Ondy’s ability in the sprints was obvious from the start. By his senior year, he became the first athlete in RHS history to break 11 seconds in the 100 meters (which he did three times) and he is third on the school’s all-time 200 meters chart with a 22.83. This past year, he

reached the 55 meters at indoor Meet of Champions for the second straight year, reached the outdoor MOC in the 100 for the first time, and qualified for the New Balance Nationals for the third straight year. His career will continue at The College of New Jersey. And that’s after just three years of serious running. How good might he be had he started in middle school? “I’ve thought about that for a while, and I still think about it today,” Ondy said. “I’m running with guys who I’m beating who’ve been doing this since sixth grade, and I wonder ‘What if I did it in sixth grade, how good would I be?’ But I’m just happy I found it in the first place.” So is Robbinsville coach Anthony Dentino, who was an assistant to Jon Hutchinson during Ondy’s sophomore year, and took over the program last year when Hutchinson took an assistant’s job at TCNJ (where he joined Mike Walker, another former Ravens coach). “He’s always been naturally pretty fast, he’s always had a quick first step,” Dentino said. “These are things he always had before he even came into our program. But when he first got into our program he started to buy into it and had a lot of success. “He’s a great kid and he’s gone through a lot and worked really hard to get where he is and he busts his butt every day in practice. He’s working on his starts, he’s very technically sound,

he listens to all the coaching. He’s one of the kids you want to have that kind of success.” Ondy has dealt with nagging injuries as well as a coaching change between his sophomore and junior seasons. But the latter issue was actually made better by all the parties involved. “It was tough because I felt I found some coaches I felt comfortable talking with,” Ondy said. “It was hard changing coaches, but I realized the new ones are cool, too. They’re smart, they know what they’re talking about it. Looking back now it was a lot smoother than it could have been.” “We’re lucky,” Dentino said. “The people he was with are still in the building and still have a hand in the program in the sense that they care and reach out to him. He’s got a lot of support. Now it’s smooth sailing and perfectly normal. He did such a great job of adjusting to that change. It’s not an easy change. We really appreciated it.” Ondy put up some decent times as

a sophomore but most of that year was a learning process. Improvement was evident as a junior when he ran an indoor time of 23.73 to finish seventh in the 200 at the Mercer County meet, and a PR of 6.67 to take third in the 55. He took fifth in the Central Jersey Group II meet, finished sixth in the Group II state meet and 25th in the Meet of Champions. Outdoors he was a distant 16th in the MCT in the 100 and ninth in the CJ II meet. He also ran on numerous relay teams, including the 4x400 that finished second in the Mercer and CJ II meets. The following fall, after a year of convincing, Dentino got Ondy to try cross country even though he is a sprinter. “When he decided on that, I knew it would be special,” the coach said. “It’s so not him, so when he made that commitment, it was my moment of clarity of like, ‘OK, this kid really gets it, and wants it.’” Ondy ran the races but was still trained like a sprinter. He embraced the

work each day, got bigger and stronger and was able to hit the ground running when winter track began. Although running 3.1 miles is vastly different than running 100 or 200 meters, Ondy feels the experience was worth it. “I think it helped in terms of my endurance,” he said. “I didn’t train that much in terms of distance in cross country, I still did sprint work, but I felt like the endurance helped me a lot and kept me in shape. I was still around the same people and same environment with the coaches. It was a good environment to stay in and to be used to everything. It also helped me stay in shape.” The results were obvious as he ran an indoor PR of 6.63 to take third in the Group II championships, and moved up to 20th in the Meet of Champions. In the spring, he finally reached his goal of breaking 11 seconds in the 100 with a 10.81 in the trials and a 10.79 for a second-place finish at the CJ II meet. He also ran a 22.98 for a third in the 200 at CJ II.

One specific area Ondy worked on was his start, as he got to see some of the top sprinters in the nation at the Meet of Champions and Nationals. “Earlier in the season I saw some things that I could change in my start that benefited me in the long run,” Ondy said. “The way (the other runners’) form changed during the races kind of helped me. I learned a lot from them and saw high class runners doing what they do best. Coaches help me out a lot too but just experiencing going against really fast guys, there’s a reason why they run so fast.” Dentino feels Ondy will continue to improve at TCNJ, which was CJ’s firstchoice overall. He will be re-united with Hutchinson and have a strong head coach in Justin Lindsey. “He’s a great guy, he really gets it and he takes good care of the kids over there,” Dentino said. “CJ’s really gonna flourish there. He’s gonna be cared for, he’s close to home so he’s got the support system that’s pretty close to him and I think he’s gonna be awesome.”

FROM THE SCHOOLS

Class of 2019, embrace your imperfections By Kathie Foster The following is a transcript of the speech given to the Class of 2019 at graduation June 21. Good evening. We would like to extend our deep appreciation to all parents, grandparents, families and friends of the graduates. Thank you for surrounding these remarkable graduates with love today. We welcome other esteemed guests including past and present Board of Education members, administrators, teachers and staff. Additionally, we recognize Mayor Dave Fried, Township Business Administrator Joy Tozzi, Chief of Police Chris Nitti, Assemblyman Daniel Benson, and council member Dan Schuberth. We are grateful to our strong and supportive community. Tonight, we celebrate the culmination of your childhood. Following this graduation ceremony, each of you will take the initial steps on the next phase of your life’s journey. Many in the Class of 2019 will be attending colleges and universities. Some will travel a few miles down the road to Mercer County College and others will set out for schools across the country. Still others will enroll in trade schools, apprenticeship programs, or go on to bravely serve our country. Regardless of the destination, each of you are about to embark on a journey that is uniquely personal and uniquely yours. Yet, sometimes, when we hear about another person’s path, our inner critic emerges and we begin to compare our own life to theirs. Why is this? Everywhere we turn, our culture dictates who we should be and how we should live. Exposure to this type of conditioning begins when we are young and assaults us day after day with a barrage of messages from TV, the internet, print and social media. Without knowing a thing about us, “experts” from all walks

of life are happy to provide unsolicited advice on pursuing the right degree, choosing the most lucrative career path, or how best to invest our time and our money. Commercials and reality TV convince us that there is a perfect car to help to maintain our image. They tout perfect products to ensure that we fit into a narrowly defined standard of beauty. They tell us what foods to eat and even what medications we should take to maintain our health. All in an effort to help us create the “perfect” life. Education, too, has its own narrowly defined measuring stick for success. Although student report cards have been redesigned to reflect a more standards-based grading system, parents can’t help but wonder how their child’s progress compares to their peers. The college admissions process still relies on standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT, which tend to measure disciplinebased knowledge rather than essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication, and resilience—all components of our Robbinsville Ready initiative. But our implementation of Robbinsville Ready is just one small step in combating a countless array of unhealthy external messages, those little seeds of doubt, that cause us to second guess ourselves and our choices. It is this insidious type of uncertainty that can show up when we least expect it and prevent us from taking risks, trying new things, and making mistakes. In Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, Lucio captures this sentiment when he exclaims, “Our doubts are traitors/and make us lose the good we oft might win/by fearing to attempt.” This doubt, or fear as Lucio points out, often blocks us from embracing our imperfections, those qualities that make us uniquely us. Bestselling author and research professor at the University of Houston Brene Brown writes extensively about

the emotional armor we wear to protect us against hurt. Brown professes that rather than shielding us—this armor actually prevents us from “growing into our gifts and ourselves.” She challenges us to shed this armor “by examining the need to be perfect and please others at the expense of our own life.” If I could offer you one takeaway from this evening’s celebration, it would be this. Embrace the imperfection in others. For by embracing the imperfection in others, you will actually learn to be more compassionate with yourself. Selfdoubt is a habit, an endless loop of negative self-talk that serves no one well, but most of all ourselves. When we become conscious of it, we realize that if we choose to, we can let it go. Graduates, I have a secret to tell you tonight. Shhhhhh! Remember, this is between you and me. Are you ready? Your parents, families and teachers are not perfect. Now, I realize that this revelation might come as a big shock to you, but it is true. I encourage all of the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles here tonight to talk with these amazing young adults about your own struggles, disap-

pointments, hurts, and failures and how they have shaped and strengthened who you are. By sharing your own vulnerabilities, you ultimately offer your graduate the gift of self-compassion, self-acceptance and the recognition that if perfection is the goal we will always fall short. Life is precious. As you go from here tonight, rightfully proud of all you’ve accomplished and hopeful for a bright future, try to envision yourself in the year ahead. There will be times that test you, experiences that challenge who you think you are and who you want to be. Remember in those moments to be kind to yourself. Treat yourself as you would a close friend, with compassion and heart. Embrace your imperfect self and measure yourself not in terms of how flawless your performance but by how authentic your life. As Brene Brown writes, “You’re imperfect and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” We love you. You will always belong here in Robbinsville. Congratulations and Godspeed. Kathie Foster is superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

Solutions for back and neck pain don’t always start with surgery. But at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, solutions start with an objective diagnosis by qualified experts. Our fellowship-trained spinal surgeons understand the complexities of the spine, assuring you a thorough understanding of your condition and the treatment options available. Whether that means an individualized physical therapy plan or a minimally invasive spinal procedure, you can be certain of two things: a solution that’s right for you and one that’s been recommended by the region’s only hospital nationally certified by the Joint Commission in spine surgery.
