Recipe for renewal? Council, developer hope bringing food trucks to Foxmoor Shopping Center cooks up business By JUliA MArnin Robbinsville council signed off in late July on a plan to use food trucks to attract visitors to Foxmoor Shopping Center. Councilman Dan Schuberth said council and the township’s Foxmoor redevelopment subcommittee have been working with Pennmark Management— which owns Foxmoor Shopping Center—to make the idea a reality. Foxmoor Shopping Center manager Justin Bartholomew estimated that trucks could start appearing at the plaza in early 2020. Council removed one of the last roadblocks during its July 25 meeting, passing an ordinance to allow food trucks to operate in the plaza. The measure will let up to five food trucks plaza at a time, Schuberth said. However, Bartholomew and township economic and community development director Hal English were quick to refute social media rumors that suggested the idea would turn Foxmoor into a “food truck mecca.” “It is not going to be a huge food truck festival,” English said. Bartholomew first proposed the food truck idea to the council in May after seeing how well it has worked for Coventry Mall in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, See FOXMOOR, Page 12

The 2019 12-year-old softball All-Stars reasserted Robbinsville Little League as one of the best in the countr y by finishing top in the state and third in the east region this summer. Pictured are Caroline Walls, Jordyn Pepper, Haley Krebs, Juleesa Alvarado, Katie Ziliani, Lily Ondy, Madison Manning, Riley Mikolajczak, Abby Veisz, Ava Aldarelli and Sorella Gallucci.

Adding to legacy of softball success Robbinsville Little League 12s, 10s win state titles By rich Fisher The glory days are back for the Robbinsville Little League softball program. Not that they were ever too far gone, but they are back in full force after a toe stub in 2018. The 12-year-old team went 4-2 in the East regional in Bristol, Connecticut, advancing to the finals of the elimination bracket and finishing third overall. The 10-year-olds won the state title on July 21, and started their regional tournament July 29 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, as

this edition went to press. Both teams impressed all summer. The regional performance was another sign that the 12s had returned to the perch they held for nearly a decade before being knocked off by Bordentown in last year’s District 12 Tournament. They grinded their way through districts, cruised to the Section 3 title and reverted to having to grind again in the states. “I kept telling the girls we have a goal, let’s get back to Bristol, that’s a tradition,” manager Scott Veisz said. “And our second goal is the World Series. Take care of one thing at a time. But always focus on the next goal. I always tell everyone, ‘Don’t get crazy, See CHAMPS, Page 8

Coaches Veisz, Krebs enjoy one last go-round By rich Fisher Scott Veisz came to Robbinsville from Edison in 1999 and, one year later, Steve Krebs arrived from Ridgefield. Few people knew it at the time, but the Robbinsville Little League just landed two key components in what would become a glorious run of baseball and softball success. It came to an end this summer, as both fixtures are finally stepping down after a combined 35 years of service and amassing great memories.

“Coaching in Robbinsville Little League has been an amazing experience, one that will forever be with me,” Krebs said. “It has taught me valuable life lessons, has shown me how amazing kids are and how they can grow, change, overcome, be resilient and enjoy baseball and softball if we guide them to overcome the many challenges this game has. “I will remember all the smiles, excitement and everlasting energy kids bring to the field, the times when they were challenged, unsure or even scared but how positive reinforcement and teamwork can help them see the greatness of success and to appreciate the work and resilSee COACHES, Page 10

CHAMPS continued from Page 1 keep fighting through it.” The 10s, meanwhile, have been carried by strong pitching and outstanding defense, actually winning its Section 3 final by getting just one first-inning hit, en route to a 1-0 victory. The hit came from Aleaya O’Neal, who scored on a wild pitch for the game’s only run against Marlboro. “Our defense has been fantastic,” manager Mike Sabol said. “We’ve been saying all along our defense is what’s been carrying us. It definitely won sectionals for us.” The 12s’ march through the districts was the stuff ulcers are made of as they defeated West Windsor in walk-off fashion in both the opening game and the title match. Juleesa Alvarado singled in the game-winning run for one win, and Caroline Walls scored from third on a passed ball in the other. Robbinsville won easily in the sectionals, getting past Milltown and Lincroft twice, but it was back to some heartpounding in the states. Robbinsville beat Swedesboro 3-2 in the opener when Madison Manning provided a two-out, walk-off RBI hit. That was followed by victories over Little Ferry, 4-1, and Swedesboro, 1-0, to reach the regionals for the sixth time in seven years. “We sort of cruised through the sectionals,” said Veisz, who is assisted by Steve Krebs and Tom Walls. “But we had to work and battle and play good softball to compete and prevail in the districts and states. It’s exciting for the fans and also stressful, but don’t get me wrong,

The Robbinsville Little League 10-year-old softball All-Stars won district, section and state titles in July. Pictured are (front) Aleiya O’Neal, Gabriella Sabol, Ryan Penzone, Hailey Bustos, Jessica Shoenfelt, Lucy Canuso, Alexis Lopez, Adriana Cepeda, Maura Halpin, Katie Murphy, Keira Pierini, Hayden Bustos, (back) coaches Tom Shoenfelt, Mike Sabol and Jason Penzone. it’s good softball we’re playing. I have to give kudos to the other teams, we played against some really good competition.” The big question is, what makes the 12s so good under pressure? The manager feels it’s not complicated. “The key thing here is we try to keep things simple,” Veisz said. “We tell them to keep their emotions level; not get too

high or too low, just continue to battle. We tell them to try to do their job. Play good defense, throw strikes, and hit the ball when you can and hopefully good things will happen. It’s simple but the interesting part about it is, every inning is a grind and we’re playing inning to inning and we’re trying to win each inning. We’re just winning more innings than other

teams. That’s a testament to their focus and their teamwork, honestly.” Like any good team, it starts with the pitcher, and Robbinsville has a good one in Katie Ziliani. “She’s an excellent pitcher, she throws lots of strikes, she’s really focused and knows what she’s doing,” Veisz said. “She’s an even-keeled kid and doesn’t get caught up in anything, she just knows how to pound the zone. She was on the 12s last year, and didn’t pitch but did play the field.” Abby Veisz, the manager’s daughter, is the catcher and “is a happy, free-spirited kind of kid who loves to catch and is working hard and mixes well with all our pitchers. She’s doing a good job framing pitches, throwing to second, keeping runners at bay. She’s not afraid to try and throw out girls or keep them close.” The infield features Manning on first (and also outfield), Walls on second, Haley Krebs at short and Sorella Gallucci on third. “Madison’s gotten very seasoned at first base and is a big target for our infielders to throw at, and she’s a really good outfielder,” Veisz said. “Caroline is a quick, little kid and really seasoned at second. She knows where to be and what to do on bunt situations.” On the left side of the infield, “Haley is a superstar at short. She has great range, is very mature. She has an excellent arm, can go back on the ball to catch bloopers or go right at the ball. Sorella is a rock at third. Extremely athletic, a very strong player who can pretty much do anything. top pitcher. She’s got a different style than Katie, but very effective. We like to use them both.” The outfield consists of Alvarado in left, Lily Ondy in center and Jordyn Pepper in right. “Jules has done a great job in left, she works hard, loves softball and will do whatever you ask of her,” Veisz said. “Lily is an excellent center fielder with great range. She’s one of those kids who loves to play center when everyone else wants to be in the infield. She wants to run down every ball she can. And Jordyn is a natural outfielder with a good glove, good range. She quietly does her job and doesn’t make much noise but gets after it.” Also contributing have been third baseman/outfielder Riley Mikolajczak, “who does a good job at both positions,” and 11-year-old outfielder Ava Aldarelli, who “is so into it, and she’ll do whatever we ask her.” Veisz’s mantra has been for the team to never give up. “Quite honestly that served us well, because that works,” he said. “They’re buying in to, ‘Hey, we never quit.’ It’s sinking in. We consider hitting our strength, we know how to play defense and we just kind of grind it out.” Unlike the 12s, the 10-year-olds blew through their district bracket, beating three teams by a combined 26-0. It got a little tighter in the sectionals. Aside from a 10-0 win over Sayreville, Robbinsville squeaked past Marlboro 3-0 and the aforementioned 1-0 game. O’Neal not only scored the only run in the title game against Marlboro, she

also pitched a no-hitter. In five district and sectional games she did not allow an earned run. “She was dominant,” Sabol said. “She’s obviously our leader. She has unbelievable control; I think she might have walked two batters in those five games. And she mixes her pitches up well.” O’Neal is aided by catcher Keira Pierini, who caught every inning of every game “and did a great job on the defensive end,” according to Sabol. Because O’Neal is so hard to get around on, batters have trouble pulling the ball which means the right side of the infield is key for Robbinsville. Gab Sabol handles first and Ryan Penzone is on second. “Gab had a lot of plays over there and also hit very well,” Sabol said. “Ryan also plays very good defense and really hit well in the district.” The right fielder also gets a lot of action when O’Neal pitches, and Jess Shoenfeld threw several players out at first on balls that looked like they may be hits. Rounding out the defense are Maura Halpin at short, Lexi Lopez on third, Hayden Bustos in center and Lucy Canuso in left. Rotating into the outfield are Adriana Cepeda, Hailey Bustos and Katie Murphy. “I thought we had a chance to do well because we won the eight and nine year old tournament, which was more of a town-based tournament with our district teams,” said Sabol, who is assisted by Tom Shoenfeld and Jason Penzone. “I did feel confident in this team.”

COACHES continued from Page 1 iency needed to be successful. They will carry this on into other areas of their life. I always got a sense of satisfaction when I see kids glow with excitement when they are able to achieve something and be happy with their efforts.” Veisz could not agree more. “Robbinsville Little League has been a huge part of my life for the last 19 years,” he said. “All of my best friends are the guys I have coached with. All of my kids’ best friends are the kids they have played with. Being a part of it for so long has taught me the true value of sports and how it builds character. “When I was just starting, I was a little over the top and thought my kid was going pro. Over the years, you gain some humility and realize that it’s not about making your kid the next Mike Trout. It’s about the learning, the value of team and working hard at practice so that you can compete and enjoy some success whether it is a big hit to win districts or it’s a kid making his or her first catch in a rec game.”

And now it’s time to move on, but not without first looking back. Krebs signed up his oldest son, Steve, for T-ball three days after the family moved to town. He began coaching in the league in 2001. Veisz was recruited to coach T-Ball in 2004 and initially resisted but was convinced to volunteer due to previous experience. “I was told I could really help,” he said. “So I did.” Did he ever. Since then, Veisz spent 16 consecutive years as a recreation manager at varying levels, including T-ball, Coach Pitch, AA, AAA, Majors and Minors. He coached five other teams and, from 2011-14, managed one team while coaching another. His outfits won four Major League titles and two Minor League crowns. In All-Star play, Veisz managed seven teams and coached 11 others. He was part of six baseball teams, ages 6-7, 8, 9 that played local tournaments, and the 9-10, 10-11 and 11-12 District 12 teams. He moved on to softball as part of local all-star

N YOUR PET GOES ON THE LAWN,

teams ages 8, 9, and all three district teams. Veisz was a coach on the 2014 Little League World Series champion, the 2013 LLWS third-place team and the 2017 9-10 East Region runners-up. He managed the 2015 8-year-old champion, coached the 2012 9-10 state champion and managed or coached four different 9-year-old champions. During that time, son Matt and daughters Ashley and Abby all played in the league from T-ball through age 12. Ashley was part of the World Series champs, which Veisz considers the highlight of his tenure. “One of the most exciting moments was winning the 2014 championship in Oregon,” he said. “Mark Walsh was the manager and the girls were so dedicated, full of passion and worked so hard to reach their goals. In every moment of that ride they made it fun and learned from prior teams who had come so close to winning it all. “I always tell my oldest daughter Ashley who was on that team that when we watch the College World Series or the

MLB World Series that, ‘You will always know what they are feeling to be champions as you yourself have accomplished something similar.’ So my proudest moment was to be a part of that accomplishment, because it was a lot of hard work and well earned by the players.” Like Veisz, Krebs has a seemingly endless resume when it comes to coaching and managing. He was mainly a manager during 19 years with recreation teams, winning 10 titles during that time. Krebs spent 16 years as an All-Star coach, which included baseball teams ages 7, 8, 9 and all three age groups in District 12 play. He also coached softball teams ages 8 and 9, and both groups of district teams. During Krebs tenure, Robbinsville won two local baseball titles and two 10-year-old baseball district crowns. In softball, RLL took a third-place World Series softball finish, two state and regional titles, four district and sectional crowns, and four local all-star championships. In his near-two decades, Krebs has watched sons Steve and Ryan and daugh-

Steve Krebs and Scott Veisz shake hands in June 2019 after their final recreation game at Robbinsville Little League. (Photo by Rich Fisher.) ters Shea and Haley play in the league. They are part of his proudest memories as he recalls Steve getting the game-winning hit against Allentown to give RLL its first district title in 2005; Ryan pitching a no-hitter in the 10-year-old state finals, Shea making the last out of the regionals at third base to put Robbinsville into the World Series, and Haley playing a flawless shortstop in the 10-year-old tournament, enabling all four Krebs kids to win a district crown. And while tangible results will always be nice to reflect upon, what makes the two men feel truly good inside was dealing with kids and, in some cases, kids who have grown up. “The thing that makes me most proud is that they still look to me for advice on the field long after their Little League days,” Krebs said. “Many have had successful high school and college careers. I’ll speak to them about little things they can adjust, throw BP to them; do fielding work. To them, I am still ‘their coach’ and that’s pretty cool.” For Veisz, helping a youngster was consistently at the top of his list. “Dealing with players has always been something I take very seriously,” he said. “I always try to help each player be the best they can be, to have no fear, to be active and to try their best. I try to help each player feel like they are a part of the team and help them understand how they can contribute. “When kids feel like they did something to help the team, they go away happy and want to play again. I’m probably satisfied with my effort to spend the time necessary to help them develop, the time I’ve put in to get them the training, repetitions and experiences so they can perform on the field. I don’t hold back and always make time to do what they need to be successful.” Both men’s contributions go beyond the playing field. Veisz is currently the vice president of softball and has served on the board for 14 years, while Krebs served for five years. The two first met 10 years ago and have coached together on several teams. They went out in tandem as they coached this year’s 12-yearold District All-Star team with Tom Walls. That team added another district,

section and state title to the pair’s credit. “We are buddies,” Krebs said. “We have coached Little League and travel softball together for about seven years, and we are trying to make one more run this year.” “We have become good friends,” Veisz said. “We spend a lot of time not only coaching in Little League but we are also travel coaches together so all year round we hangout, coach the girls and spend time talking sports and having a meal to discuss what’s next with our team.” No matter what they planned, the bottom line would always be the same— make sure the players enjoyed what they were doing while learning a few lessons along the way. “My philosophy was to always to be fair and make it fun for every kid regardless of their talent level and to make all the recreation kids feel like this is a really fun game to play,” Veisz said. “I always wanted to see kids, regardless of their skills, play without fear, to know that mistakes are OK, to look forward to the next practice and game as a place to try again to be a little better than the last time they were on the field. “I want kids to continue on with this great game of challenges that requires each and every player to develop a strong mental aptitude and to remain positive and to know that hard work will help you be successful. With All-stars I had the same approach except I just raised the bar and tried to push them to develop more quickly.” Krebs, who has been involved in Little League since he was 7-years-old, emphasized just how special softball and baseball can be. “I try to tell the kids to work hard at learning the game, whether that is on the field or watching it on TV,” he said. “It is a beautiful game if you learn all of its components. So, I work with kids on understanding situations and doing the fundamental things correctly. Use good form in fielding, throwing and hitting even if it results in errors or strikeouts. If you do those two things, they will have success.” They will indeed. And having Steve Krebs and Scott Veisz as their coach certainly helped add to that success.

Township council approved an ordinance July 25, 2019 that allows food trucks to operate in Foxmoor Shopping Center. The center’s management hopes having food trucks will drum up interest in the plaza. FOXMOOR continued from Page 1 another plaza he manages. He said the idea is to attract visitors to the plaza and support existing tenants, not make things harder for the restaurants already in the center. He said food trucks whose menus compete with Foxmoor restaurants would not be welcome. There are three restaurants in the plaza currently, with a fourth—Thai Ginger— on its way. Bagels n’ Cream, Friendly’s and Massimo’s Pizzeria and Cucina Napoletana have long been mainstays in Foxmoor. “I’m not creating competition, I’m showing people the plaza,” Bartholomew said. Although Coventry Mall has brought in around 25 food trucks each year, Bartholomew says he is hopeful for the smaller-scale plan for Foxmoor, saying the experiment will be trial and error. “It benefits everyone in the end,” he says. “It brings people that may not have been there otherwise.” Logistics are still being worked out, though. Pennmark’s hope is to bring in a small number of food trucks a few times a month. To start, it could be as little as once a month. Pennmark has worked to iron out some details with shop owners in the plaza, with Bartholomew saying stores in Foxmoor Shopping Center have agreed to offer their restrooms to food truck patrons. Tenants in the shopping center have also agreed to assist with garbage and recycling generated by the new initiative. Food trucks most likely won’t appear

in the shopping center until next year, due to the advanced booking the trucks require, Bartholomew said. He added that the plaza does not have enough room for a large number of trucks or any kind of food truck festival. “We purchased the center not even a year ago,” he said. “We’re still figuring out the direction we’re heading, and it’s a good direction.” Meanwhile, the township has stepped in to ensure the food trucks are under the same scrutiny as other eateries in the area. The food trucks must meet requirements to operate in the plaza, Schuberth said, such as health inspections. Criminal background checks will be conducted on food truck operators, and adequate parking, sanitation, and access to restroom facilities will be required. The Foxmoor redevelopment subcommittee was supportive of Bartholomew’s idea and open to collaborating on the idea with Pennmark, Schuberth said. He added that council formed the subcommittee in 2016 to consider any idea that might reinvigorate the center. Schuberth sits on the subcommittee with English, councilman Mike Cipriano, Mayor Dave Fried and business administrator Joy Tozzi. “We’re open to outside-the-box ideas like food trucks to encourage residents to visit the plaza and support our local shops,” Schuberth said. “We look forward to restoring the plaza to full occupancy, and making it a wonderful destination for all of our residents to enjoy.”

Discovery by K9 officers leads to largest cocaine seizure in U.S. history By Michele Alperin Even if 17.5 tons of cocaine represents only a fraction of the illegal drugs flowing through the United States, the 15,582 bricks nosed out by eight K-9 dogs in Philadelphia on June 17 was “the largest cocaine seizure American history,” Robbinsville Police Sgt. Scott Kivet said. Three out of the eight canine handlers and their K-9 dogs who searched out the drugs were from Mercer County—Kivet and Quori, Ewing Police Officer Brittney Fornarotto and Jax, and Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Sgt. Joe Angarone and Bela. The dogs scoured a large Liberian-flagged container ship and pinpointed cocaine with a street value of about $1.1 billion hidden in just seven of thousands of containers on the ship. Other agencies involved in the big bust were Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Coast Guard, all under the Department of Homeland Security, as well as state and local law enforcement partners. The three officers got a call to come directly to the port where, Angarone said, the “three football field-long” ship MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) Gayane was docked. They were told the containers would be both on and off the ship, because “the ship is so big there were areas we can’t get to.” For the dogs, it was just another day of work. “It’s just like searching a house or

says, “it doesn’t distract them if you have a well-trained dog.” The environment on a ship can be particularly challenging for a dog, who has to climb long metal steps to board and then work in a loud and hot environment. Fornarotto says that her dog Jax did particularly well in this area. “I was proud and excited that he had no environmental issues because he had already done training on a boat. My dog had no fears and did not clam up because of a different environment.” Also, “dogs get tired out,” Angarone says, so they generally are on for four days then off for four, working a maximum of 12 consecutive hours, but based on the handler’s estimation of how the dog can tolerate. Finding drugs is not a given, and when Robbinsville Sgt. Scott Kivet, Quori, Ewing Officer Brittney Fornarotto, Jax, Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Sgt. whose job is criminal and drug interdiction, gets called over the county, but works mostly in East Windsor, Hightstown, and Robbinsville. Trenton, he adds, is one of the biggest drug distribution centers in the state. “Ninety-nine percent of my job is to get heroin,” Kivet says. Given that the size of a single bag, or deck, of heroin is half the size of a pinky finger, it can be hidden easily. “You can localize it under a seat, between seats, or in a hidden compartment,” he says. But, Kivet adds, “we get distribution amounts all the time.” Last year, he and Quori found 80 bricks of heroin, three handguns, and a machine gun in a hidden compartment in a car during a traffic stop. Angarone got multiple kilos out of a tractor-trailer. When they do arrest someone, Kivet says, “Our goal is to get the person into rehab regardless of whether they have insurance or not.” So as long as a person arrested for heroin possession has no arrest warrant on them and is not holding a distribution amount of the drug, Robbinsville’s Community Addiction Recovery Effort, or CARE, program kicks in and the person speaks to a drug counselor. When Kivet, a certified drug recognition expert, either makes cold stops or stops people for a traffic violation, he says. “I do a quick field inquiry—where they are coming from and where they are going to. Within 30 seconds to a minute I will look at constricted and dilated pupils, an irregular characteristic indicative to ingesting drugs, and that gives me reasonable suspicion. When I have that, I utilize Quori.” Then Quori sniffs and, if he smells drugs, he sits down, and if not, he does nothing. Kivet picked Quori up from the Penn Vet Working Dog Center in Philadelphia, where he was bred and trained, on Sept. 26, and the two immediately bonded. Kivet trains Quori “with cotton imprinted with odor—I put it in a jar with drugs for 24 hours. I hide it, and it is a challenge for Quori. When it has a very strong odor, he has to try to localize it.” A typical day for Kivet is to take Quori

to the schools from 9 to 11 a.m., then go out with him on the interstate, and be back in the office at 2 with another drug arrest. The community outreach in the morning is important for bridging gaps between police and the people they serve. “Not everybody loves a cop. But regardless of whether you love cops, everybody loves Quori,” he says. Quori was initially set to do live finds—urban search and rescue, sniffing out bodies in rubble—but made the transition to drugs. Now, he’s able to identify 450 different drugs, including MDMA, cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, LSD, crystal meth and heroin, which Kivet calls Quori’s specialty. Quori finds heroin almost every day. Kivet added that Quori is one of the first dogs in the area that can identify opioids like percocet, oxycodone, and synthetic heroin. Taking heroin off the streets and confronting heroin addiction and recovery has become a passion project for Kivet. “It’s a mental illness where they have to fight for survival,” he says. “Every morning, they have to have that drug. Some of these people are good people. Some of these people are bad people. My thing is to kick somebody in the butt and get on the better path.” Kivet said Robbinsville Chief of Police Chris Nitti asked him in 2016 if he wanted a dog, and he jumped at the chance as soon as his wife, Danielle, agreed to it, and Kivet said she fell in love with Quori as soon as she met him. Kivet and Quori did 450 searches in training alone, and Kivet said Quori “falsed” just twice: once because he smelled a cat, and again after indicating a spot in a pipe trace where drugs were previously present but not at the time of the search. He’s mastered the art of avoiding distractions like the cat, loud noises or a change in the wind. “I just have pride with him,” Kivet said. “Every dog that’s certified is good. I don’t want to say I’m cocky, but I’m confident with him. I know him. I’m pretty good at a methodical search, but he is so methodical and systematic. He doesn’t look with his eyes. He looks with his nose.”

wanted to try something different—I was drinking IPAs like Sierra Nevada and stuff like that.” He bought his first homebrew kit 20 years ago, when he and Warboys lived in California. After they came back to New Jersey to live, he continued brewing, with supplies and guidance from Princeton Homebrew (now Solar Homebrewing) in Trenton. When the couple got married, Pogorzelski made a pumpkin ale to be given away as a wedding favor. “I do enjoy doing it,” he says. “My biggest satisfaction is seeing people enjoy what I made.” Warboys and Pogorzelski have been trying to get their brewery up and running since 2017. The name Tindall Road Brewing comes from the couple’s home street in Robbinsville. They thought they might one day open in Robbinsville. But the process can be daunting, especially in New Jersey where there is a backlog of applicants for brewing licenses and a great deal of red tape in general. It can take 18 months for a new brewery to get a license in New Jersey. Warboys says they had resigned themselves to looking to open a place in Pennsylvania, where they thought there might be fewer barriers to entry for new breweries. Then this spring, they heard from a friend that Common Sense was looking to sell its license and get out of the business. “When we found this place, we knew it was a great

Just a month after Bordentown City’s first modern brewery closed, another has already taken its place. Tindall Road Brewing Company opened its doors to the public for the first time July 19. The opening was the culmination of two years of preparation for brewer-owner Dan Pogorzelski and his wife and partner, Marci Warboys. Common Sense Brewing owners Eric Eaves, Marc Selover and Robin Selover ceased operations at 102 Farnsworth Ave. in early June. They sold their brewing license to Tindall Road, and the latter moved into the space and quickly began brewing. The Robbinsville Advance attempted to contact a representative from Common Sense Brewing for comment on its closing, but the brewery’s website and social media sites have either been shut down or stripped of content, and an email we have for Eric Eaves returns an undeliverable message. Common Sense was open from September 2017 to June 2019. The brewery’s tasting room has been painted, and some tables have been moved around, but long-time Common Sense customers will probably feel right at home. One noteworthy change to the facility comes not in the tasting room, but in operations, where Pogorzelski will be fermenting in stain-

he was old enough to drink alcohol. “Everybody’s dad was always drinking Coors Light or Bud Light,” he says. “When I came to be of age, I always

opportunity,” she says. Pogorzelski grew up in Hamilton, graduating from Steinert High School in 1992. He is an environmental field technician with Environmental Resource Management, an international environmental consulting firm. Warboys grew up in Bristol, Pennsylvania. She is a special education teacher in the Montgomery School district. The couple has two children: August, 15, a student at Robbinsville High School, and Izzy, 13, a student at Pond Road Middle School. Warboys says she thought turning her husband’s hobby into a business would be good for the whole family. “I wanted to show my kids that you can put your mind to something big and get it done,” she says. “And I thought, ‘What does Dan love to do?’ And that’s how this came about.” At a closed-door event for family and friends held last week at the brewery, the kids gave guests tours of the facility. “They’ve been watching their dad do

this in the garage since they were born,” Warboys says. Warboys and Pogorzelski treated July 19 as a soft opening. They plan to have a grand opening sometime in late August or early September. Although pets will not be allowed in the tasting room, Pogorzelski and Warboys say the facility will be kid friendly. New Jersey law prohibits breweries from making or selling food on premises, but visitors are allowed to bring food in from outside. The brewery is permitted to provide customers with menus from nearby restaurants, which Warboys says they will do. They also plan to host live music at the brewery. In the future, they also hope to bring in some games like shuffleboard, pinball and skeeball, although that is subject to approval from the state Alcoholic Beverage Control. “We want to make this a friendly place, where people can come and have a craft beer 30 feet from where we make it,” Pogorzelski says.

SPORTS

Ambassador spreads word of pickleball, the latest sports craze By Rich Fisher The name of the sport is “pickleball,” and if it sounds silly then so be it. Just be assured there is a lot of silliness going on in Mercer County these days and it shows no signs of slowing down. Pickleball has become the fastest growing sport in America, particularly for those 50 and over. An example of the explosion can be found at Veterans Park in Hamilton, where pickleball courts were installed at the tail end of last season. “Last year, we sold about 160 passes for tennis for the whole year, through October,” said long-time employee Joe Russo, who works in the park’s tennis office. “This year, at the start of July, we had sold over 300 passes and I guarantee you they were more pickleball than tennis. It’s been incredible.” Those are the kind of statistics Karin Rentschler loves to hear as she spreads the gospel of pickleball throughout Central Jersey. A former Lawrence High tennis player who has lived in Robbinsville for over 25 years, Rentschler is the official United States of America Pickleball Association Ambassador for the Greater Mercer County Area. A career public relations woman, Rentschler was introduced to

passed with flying colors. You just have to be very enthusiastic, know the rules, know the game, have some competence in the sport, and just be able to use your

background and history to promote it. I had been in communications. I thought it would be pretty easy to be able to let people know how much the sport was good for them and how much fun they would have.” It is a labor of love for Rentschler, who embraced pickleball after being introduced to it at The Villages in Florida. Unable to play tennis anymore due to hand and elbow surgeries, she was immediately drawn to a sport that had some of the same tendencies as other paddle and racket activities. Upon returning to New Jersey, Rentschler noticed that the Sawmill YMCA in Hamilton was advertising for pickleballers at their new indoor courts. Eight people, including Rentschler, showed up and began learning the sport. She proudly notes there are now 14 two-hour sessions at the same site and at least 200 people playing between October and April. “After I went to Sawmill, myself and a few other people who I took with me demonstrated the sport at the Pennington Ewing Athletic Club, and they started pickleball over there,” she said. “Then we had some people who brought the sport to Nassau Tennis Club in Skillman. The rest is history. More

and more organizations, private communities all had people who loved the sport and promoted the sport and helped it grow in their particular locations.” Another site that has installed courts is Mercer County Park, where Rentschler gives two-hour lessons three times a week in the summer. Rackets are available for those who do not have them. “We can teach you basic shots of pickleball and teach you how to move on the court and score the game,” she said. “If you have people you want to go play with, you can actually then go play a game. The more times you come, the more we can teach you, and the more you can learn and play better. It’s just a matter of how much time you want to invest in it.” One of her pupils is 70-year-old Robbinsville resident Setsuko Kinjo, who learned about pickleball when Rentschler visited the Robbinsville Senior Center to explain it last year. “I started reading articles and then I decided to get lessons,” Kinjo said. “I went to the Y where she teaches in January and went every week. It was quite different. It was mixed with badminton, ping pong and tennis. And I love all of that so it motivated me to learn.” Like so many others, Kinjo was immediately grabbed by it. “When I was young, I used to play badminton and I took lessons for tennis and ping pong and I do Tai Chi,” she said. “I like to do a lot of different things but I love to do pickleball. I meet so many nice people. It’s very comfortable. I’m only a beginner but I love it.” What is it about pickleball?

According to Rentschler there are three specific aspects that make it so popular, especially with the over-50 crowd. It provides exercise, a chance to socialize, and a way to keep mentally sharp. While it can be played with just singles, pickleball is usually a doubles sport. Groups of similar skill levels often set up times to meet and play, and through those matches they get to know each other. Players have come to Veterans Park from as far as Rumson. The court is smaller than tennis and because you are playing with smaller paddles and a type of wiffle ball, the competitors are more condensed and actually have conversations during games without worrying about getting drilled by a hard ball. “Few sports are very social,” Rentschler said. “You’re playing in a very close proximity in pickleball and you’re rotating among a group of people so you get to know people and converse and have social outings afterwards. “For the exercise, people who have gone through knee replacement surgeries or elbow problems have an easier time with pickleball because the court is shorter than the tennis court and you don’t use as much force when you hit the ball. Pickleball is a slower type of game but requires a lot of technique and skill. And it requires mental capacity besides just keeping the score and figuring out who’s serving and receiving. You have to remember the positioning and where to hit the ball. It requires mental acuity. Those three things are great for the aging population.” Don’t be fooled, however, More

and more younger people are coming out to play and it is being taught in some middle schools and high schools. Rentschler noted there is a 37-year-old father in Bordentown who plays with his two high school-aged sons. She has also observed senior citizens taking their grandchildren out to play. “We’ve seen that many times in Florida,” Rentschler said. “When grandkids are visiting, it becomes an intergenerational sport because kids can play at an equal level as the grandparents and vice versa and they have a great time playing together.” Believe it or not, pickleball actually began in 1965. It was created by Washington state congressman Joe Pritchard and two friends. The trio vacationed on Bainbridge Island in the summer, and Rentschler said, “They just didn’t have anything to do. There was a basketball court and ping-pong paddles and ping pong balls and they were hitting and starting to play and eventually all that became pickleball.” The sport’s name came from Bainbridge’s wife, who was on the University of Washington crew team. She noted the last boat in a race was a mixture of positions that rode in all the other boats, so it was called the pickle boat. Since pickleball contains elements of ping pong, tennis, badminton, to a lesser degree, volleyball and bowling, it became pickleball in honor of the pickle boat. It is similar to tennis in that one is hitting the ball over a net to win a point, but the serve is underhand and the scoring is different. It is more like volleyball,

where you are playing to score a point while serving, or to regain the serve if receiving. Games are played to 11 and a team must win by two. While having experience with racket sports helps, it is not a requirement. Once the sport caught on in the Northwest, it went down to California, spread to the western snowbird states, came up to the Midwest, expanded to the eastern snowbird states and made its way up to the Northeast. “I say pickleball in New Jersey is in its adolescence,” Rentschler said. “It’s a 54-year-old sport, but it’s new to a large contingent of people around here, maybe in its teenage years.” But like most teenagers, it is growing up fast. Rentschler estimates she has between 800 and 1000 email addresses in her ambassador’s account and that does not come close to including everyone who plays. “What’s happening at Veterans Park is just a microcosm of how many players there are,” Rentschler said. “There are a lot of private, 55 and over communities starting pickleball, with people who don’t even play in public places.” Rentschler certainly gained a convert in Kinjo. “I’ve been telling other people about it, getting them to play,” she said. “I can see myself doing this for a long time. You have to move, it keeps you in shape. I think pickleball is a good sport.” It certainly is a growing sport. For more information, go online to usapa.org. Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell

Earns National Award for Quality

Third Consecutive “A” Awarded by the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for the third consecutive time. The designation recognizes the hospital’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care. “Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell is home to services like our Cancer Center, Center for Digestive Health, Orthopaedics, and Pediatric Services to name a few. Earning an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group for the third time in a row reassures the residents in our community that we continue to be a leader in health care for the region,” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO, Capital Health. “As an organization, Capital Health is committed to improving quality and safety outcomes, and this recognition validates our efforts,” said Dr. Louis D’Amelio, vice president of Clinical Performance at Capital Health. “Our dedication to patient safety is supported by ongoing initiatives that ensure we continue to make sustained improvements and meet nationally recognized standards of care.”

“To be recognized nationally as an ‘A’ hospital is an accomplishment the whole community should take pride in,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ grade are making it a priority to protect patients from preventable medical harm and error. We congratulate hospital leaders, board members, staff, volunteers and clinicians who work so hard to earn this A.” To see Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell’s full grade details, and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, go to hospitalsafetygrade.org or visit capitalhealth.org for more information.

Developed under the guidance of a Blue Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. Health Headlines by Capital Health | Robbinsville Advance21

Capital Health at Deborah – Emergency Services Satellite Emergency Department Launches at Deborah Heart and Lung Center As of 12 a.m. on July 1, Capital Health assumed operation of the satellite emergency department (SED) located on the Browns Mills campus of Deborah Heart and Lung Center, an 89-bed teaching hospital that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired heart, lung, and vascular diseases in adults, as well as providing outpatient cardiology services for children. Deborah is Burlington County’s only fully licensed cardiac center.

president and CEO Joseph Chirichella, who noted that the two organizations have entered into a larger partnering agreement to expand access to the specialized services offered by each hospital in their greater service areas.

The newly named SED, Capital Health at Deborah – Emergency Services, is licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Health and fills the vacancy left by Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County after Lourdes’ planned termination of services on June 30, 2019. The 10,000 square foot SED operates 24 hours a day and features 11 exam/treatment rooms, triage bay, cardiac resuscitation room, specialized treatment areas (including OB/ GYN and isolation/decontamination), support services such as lab and radiology, a comfortable waiting area, and ample parking at an easy to drive to location.

“First and foremost, we could not have found a better partner to operate the SED,” he added. “Capital Health’s experience makes them ideal to assume the emergency department operations management. For the past ten years, patients have come to expect a high level of service and care. We are pleased that they will continue to receive this high level of medical care under a seamless transition. More importantly, our strategic partnership with Capital Health will open the doors to specialty services in our area and on our campus, services that are needed in the community. As well, this partnership paves the way for an integration of cardiac services that will benefit the residents of Mercer County, who will enjoy a closer connection to the highest level of cardiac care available. This collaboration and partnership is a win-win situation for both communities.”

“Communities that Deborah serves depend on the SED at Deborah, and our goal is to not only meet but exceed their expectations when they need emergency medical services,” said Al Maghazehe, Capital Health’s president and CEO. “We are excited to begin this journey with our new partners at Deborah and look forward to building upon the services offered at the SED.”

“Deborah’s reputation for excellence in cardiac care and best practices aligns with Capital Health’s high standards and commitment to quality,” said Samuel J. Plumeri, Jr., chairman, Capital Healthcare Corporation Board of Directors. “As partners, we will continue to provide the highest level of emergency medical services to the Burlington and Ocean County communities.”

“The community, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, will benefit from this range of specialized services which Capital Health will bring to its strategic partnership with Deborah,” said

Capital Health Regional Medical Center Earns NATIONAL RECOGNITION for Comprehensive Stroke Care Capital Health Regional Medical Center (RMC) has received the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. RMC earned the Get With The Guidelines® Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

Additionally, RMC received the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. Capital Health Regional Medical Center is the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in the region certified by The Joint Commission, and one of only eight such hospitals in New Jersey. And as part of Capital Health’s Capital Institute for Neurosciences, it is available for patients who require the most advanced treatments for neurovascular and stroke care including neuroendovascular, neurosurgical and stroke services. In addition, Capital Health launched its innovative Mobile Stroke Unit in early 2017, designed to bring time-critical stroke care to patients at their home, or wherever it is dispatched to assess them. It was the first unit of its kind in New Jersey, Pennsylvania or the Delaware Valley and was only the seventh to go live in the United States. To learn more about Capital Health’s advanced care for stroke patients and those with other complex disorders of the brain and spine, visit capitalneuro.org.

CAPITAL HEALTH RECEIVES NEW QUALITY-BASED ACCREDITATION FROM DNV GL Capital Health has earned hospital accreditation from DNV GL – Healthcare, a certification body that helps health care organizations achieve excellence by improving quality and patient safety. By earning this accreditation, both Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell and Capital Health Regional Medical Center demonstrate that they meet or exceed patient safety standards and Conditions of Participation set forth by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). DNV GL’s accreditation program is the only one to integrate the ISO 9001 Quality Management System with the Medicare Conditions of Participation. “The DNV GL program is consistent with our commitment to quality and patient safety and aligns with the important initiatives that support our organizational culture,” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO of Capital Health. “The program includes the integration of ISO 9001 quality standards with our clinical and financial processes, which will be a major move forward for the entire organization.” Capital Health has three years from the date of its accreditation to achieve compliance with ISO 9001, the world’s most trusted quality management system used by performance-driven organizations around the world to advance their quality and sustainability objectives.

“We have taken an entirely different approach to accreditation, and hospitals are really responding,” says DNV GL - Healthcare CEO Patrick Horine. “Since accreditation is a musthave credential for just about every hospital in this country, why not make it more valuable, and get more out of it? That’s where ISO 9001 comes into play, and turns the typical get-your-ticketpunched accreditation exercise into a quality transformation.” DNV GL’s accreditation program, called National Integrated Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (NIAHO®), involves annual hospital surveys – instead of every three years – and encourages hospitals to openly share information across departments and discover improvements in clinical workflows and safety protocols. “Our hospital accreditation from DNV GL – Healthcare aligns with our journey to high reliability with a philosophy that links compliance with quality and safety standards, making improvements, and then sustaining those improvements over time,” said Dr. Louis D’Amelio, vice president of Clinical Performance at Capital Health. “Holding on-site surveys every year will help us to quickly apply the high, nationally recognized standards from ISO 9001 and CMS to be able to give our patients the best possible outcomes.”

In Robbinsville, we have an ongoing commitment focused on developing responsible and resilient students. Because we value the importance of academic rigor and achievement, we actively research best practices in curriculum and instruction in order to create an engaging and meaningful environment. Additionally, we believe that in order for students to succeed they must feel safe and ready to learn. Therefore, we recognize the importance of teaching the social and emotional skills necessary for students to become critical and compassionate citizens. To address this aspect of our curriculum, we have developed what we call Robbinsville Ready Skills. Each year we expand our vision of what these skills look like and how we can best integrate them into the daily lives of our students. Our ultimate goal is to prepare students to eventually meet the challenges of life beyond school. Robbinsville Ready Skills were created around expectations that over time students become resilient and self-directed RANTEE scholars, effective communicators, A U informed and involved citizens, collaborative team players, emotionally intelligent learners and innovative thinkers. After all, in the grand scheme, a forgotten assignment is just a blip on the radar. Once again, we want our students to flourish and live healthy and productive lives. Therefore, school personnel and parents will need to share the responsibility of teaching the skills kids need when things don’t go as planned. Beginning in September, when you or your child realize that he forgot lunch, left homework on the dining room table or the tennis racquet in the mudroom, we are requesting your support in letting the scenario unfold organically. In other words, please do not bring the forgotten item to school. With your help, we will guide your child to problem solve the situation and develop a future plan. After all, we want school to be a safe place for kids to make mistakes. It is our mistakes that often lead to our most valuable lessons. As author Julie Lythcott-Haims reminds us, when we notice students struggling with a problem it is important that we “empathize and strategize” rather than jump in to solve the problem for them. Through active brainstorming, we empower the child to own the problem and take responsibility for the solution. This strategy helps avoid seeing a setback as an ultimate failure beyond control. Instead, she will begin to see how to face adversity and bounce back from defeats. This in turn leads to resilience. I encourage parents to practice this type of role playing at home. We will also be reinforcing with staff the importance of responding to children appropriately when they forget things. To help strengthen these skills, the district continues to integrate executive functioning skills throughout the curriculum. Executive function skills are the mental processes that enable students to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, prioritize, problem solve and juggle multiple tasks successfully: all key components of building resilient and self-reliant learners. In fact, next school year the district will embark on an executive function pilot program with select staff to infuse these important skills and strategies within the school day. Examples include: reading comprehension, studying for tests, time management, organization, problem solving, flexible thinking and self-monitoring. Although we want the “No Drop Off” policy to become one shared measure to build resilience and self-efficacy, there is also an unintended consequence that could benefit parents. Now, when a frantic child asks that they drop everything to save the day, mom or dad can cite the new policy and thereby eliminate the overwhelming sense of guilt and pressure that often accompanies a request of this type. As we move into the 2019-2020 school year, we will continue to work together to ensure that our schools are places in which students feel safe and can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. Kathie Foster is superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

MAYOR’S COLUMN

Big changes coming to township recycling program By Dave Fried Big changes are coming to our recycling program. With China no longer accepting recycled products from the United States, it is forcing companies to raise their prices. In order to keep township rates in line and achieve our recycling goals, we have to make some substantial changes and we will need the cooperation of all township residents. The first and most vital part of the new, improved, cleaner and hopefully less expensive approach is the complete elimination of plastic bags. If you put your recycled materials in a plastic bag, even a recyclable plastic bag, and then into your collection bin your container will not be collected curbside effective Sept. 1. As with most changes this will take some getting used to, but at the end of the day it will benefit the environment and all of us in the form of lower costs. Plastic bags clog up the sorting machines at the plant. When those machines malfunction and have to be cleared and restarted due to the clog, the township gets charged a higher rate. The motto going forward should be: “When in doubt, throw it out!”

Per the Mercer County Improvement Authority, just a few other everyday items that are not recyclable include: plastic water bottle and juice caps, yogurt containers, pizza boxes (or anything other items that come in contact with oils or grease), light bulbs and fluorescent light bulbs, styrofoam, plastic utensils, napkins/paper towels, coffee K-cups and broken windows or windshield glass. Incidentally, glass bottles and containers may be the next to be added to the “excluded” list for myriad reasons, but we will cross that bridge if and when we get to it. Items eligible for collection are: juice boxes and cartons, detergent bottles (rinsed), junk mail and catalogs, postcards, shredded and fax paper, hardcover books and mailing tubes. More changes will be announced by our Department of Public Works at a later date. Know your recyclables! Keep the (single) stream clean and we would like to thank everyone in advance for their cooperation. *** National Night Out is set for Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Police Headquarters from 6-9 p.m. NNO is part of “Police Appreciation Week” in Robbinsville and is an annual

campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. It is a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances with food, refreshments, games and other activities. We hope to see you there! *** I am pleased to report the acquisition of the Mercer Mobile Home Park and subsequent takeover of operations July 1 has gone very smoothly. Potholes throughout the complex have been filled, a few troublesome trees have been trimmed or removed,

the common areas have been treated and are better maintained and we called in PSE&G to remove some low-hanging wires. The next big project will be upgrading the sewer lines. Thank you to Director Hal English and the Department of Community Development, along with our man on the ground, Dan Rafferty, for his hard work there. We could not have accomplished any of this without the support of the MMH residents and their families, who put their faith and trust in us as we embarked on this new venture together. Dave Fried is the Mayor of Robbinsville Township.
