Down the drain Sewer dispute leads Hamilton to file $2.8M lawsuit against Robbinsville

By RoB Anthes

ranthes@communitynews.org Hamilton Township has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Robbinsville, the latest twist in a months-long saga surrounding the regional sewer authority shared by the municipalities. Hamilton announced the litigation Aug. 26, one week after Hamilton Mayor Kelly Yaede’s

administration came under fire for appearing to backtrack on a study to analyze the finances of the township sewer department. The Aug. 20 announcement that Hamilton would not agree to an independent sewer rate study shocked involved parties in Hamilton and Robbinsville, and raised questions about why the administration would not want it. These questions were the “final straw,” Hamilton Township business administrator Dave Kenny said in a township press release. The lawsuit filed with Mercer County Superior Court seeks $2.8 million from Robbinsville, an amount the Yaede admin-

istration says its neighbor has not paid for increased usage of Hamilton’s sewer system. For months, Yaede has claimed that Robbinsville owes Hamilton’s sewer utility a seven-figure sum, but has been inconsistent in the exact amount, recently increasing the debt from $1 million to $2.8 million. She said in an interview with the Robbinsville Advance Aug. 22 that Robbinsville’s usage of the system has increased, from 15.9 percent in 2016 to 19 percent thus far in 2019. Fried said he has seen spreadsheets and press releases claiming his township owes Hamilton See SEWER, Page 10

Can this be recycled? Most residents don’t know the answer, and that’s causing soaring costs By MicheLe ALPeRin

Since 1987, New Jersey state law has mandated recycling, but Mercer County residents can’t seem to figure out what is recyclable and what isn’t. The result has been increasingly contaminated containers and huge increases in recycling costs. The issue is statewide, and local towns are no exception. According to Chris Rupp, director of public works for Robbinsville Township, the town’s recycling costs “have doubled from $125,000 per

year to $250,000 per year.” Dan Napoleon, director of environmental programs at the Mercer County Improvement Authority, says that the cost per household per year now averages around $29, which generates large bills in populous towns. The major change on the recycling scene, says Frank Fiumefreddo of Solterra Recycling Solutions, is that “the quality of the material we were shipping overseas had gotten to a point that it was unacceptable.” As a result, in 2018, China lowered the minimum allowable percentage of contamination in recycling, throwing the entire recycling industry into crisis. Solterra is the contracted hauler for curbside recycling in Robbinsville and towns served by the Mercer County Improvement

Authority, including Hamilton. “They went from maybe five percent, and the new standard was they would not accept any material with greater than onehalf of one percent contamination,” Napoleon says. “We saw a 40 percent increase in collection costs as a result.” Because the biggest contributors to contamination of the recycling stream are plastic bags and pizza boxes, Robbinsville and the Mercer County Improvement Authority are focusing on them in campaigns to reeducate consumers on the how-to’s of recycling. Plastic bags and any items inside them go directly into the trash at the processing plant. “It could be 100 percent clean recycling, but it is not opened See RECYCLING, Page 8

FROM THE EDITOR To the readers of the Advance: I’ve always believed that a local newspaper is not a static thing, but rather a conduit for continued, productive conversation between community members. So, with this in mind, I’m taking this opportunity to inject a bit of personal news into the conversation in the slim chance my news might affect you in some way. Here at Community News Service, we’ve been doing a bit of restructuring this summer following the retirement of editorial director Richard Rein. This sounds far more official than what really happened; a few people moved desks. But the end result of this shuffling is this issue of the Robbinsville Advance will be my last as editor of the paper. I’m not going anywhere, really—I’ve taken over as managing editor for Joe Emanski. Joe has moved into a new role as director of digital services. And Samantha Sciarrotta will slide into my seat as the new editor of the Robbinsville Advance. Samantha has been the editor of our Bordentown and Lawrence newspapers for five years now, and has been with our company in one capacity or another for nearly 10. She formerly ser ved as our sports editor, and has spent plenty of time at athletic events in Robbinsville Township. I have full

confidence that there won’t be a difference between a newspaper edited by me and one by Samantha. But this also means you probably won’t be seeing as much of me in town or in the paper. I have been the only editor in the history of this publication, and—after 137 months and 137 issues of the Robbinsville Advance—it’s an odd feeling to know that will no longer be true. It has been an absolute pleasure to get to better know this town and its residents. Thank you, Robbinsville, for embracing me and the Advance ever since we started in 2008. It is not hyperbole to say that the relationships I’ve formed in Robbinsville and the stories I’ve covered here have changed my life. But this is not farewell forever. My new role will be to guide our community newspapers, including the Advance, as the media industry and our area continues to experience rapid change. It’s an exciting challenge, and one I won’t be able to face without the people who have helped me along the way. So, stay in touch. You can reach me via email at ranthes@communitynews.org, or on social media at facebook.com/robanthes or twitter.com/robanthes. And, as always, thank you for reading.

RECYCLING continued from Page 1 at the facility,” Napoleon says. Plastic bags that make their way to the sorting line can jam up the sorting machinery and must be removed by hand, which increases costs. Pizza boxes are rejected because any oil that has seeped into the cardboard will remain part of the paper fibers when they get to the pulping process. Misconceptions abound, and they often come with justifications. “Some residents think they are doing the right thing by putting the recycling in a bag to contain it from blowing around,” says Napoleon. Or they may not realize that recycled No. 1 and No. 2 plastic needs to be cleaned before being tossed in the bin. Or perhaps people get confused because plastic bags are recyclable through collection programs in area supermarkets. Some of the mistakes are fairly extreme, but perhaps people are extrapolating from allowed items like glass jars, metal cans, and No. 1 and No. 2 plastics when they put items like plastic toys, broken window glass, coat hangers, bowling balls and frying pans in their recycling cans. “A lot of people think because it has some kind of plastic in it or has a plastic handle, it is recyclable,” says Rupp. So residents should take heed of important advice from recycling professionals: “When in doubt, throw it out.” Fiumefreddo is convinced that education works and cites a recent New Jersey success story. “Marlboro Township decided it was not allowing any residents to put plastic bags at the curb, and the quality of the material got tremendously better,” Fiumefreddo says. The absence of plastic bags in Marlboro come with an additional benefit: Solterra haulers can see exactly what is in a recycling container, enabling them to reject a bucket that is contaminated much more easily. “If we don’t keep educating and letting

residents know what can and can’t go in there, it is not going to get better,” says Fiumefreddo. Robbinsville’s educational outreach on correct recycling has been multifaceted and far-reaching: they have included the recycling changes for plastic bags with everyone’s tax bill; contacted homeowners association representatives; advertised in myriad venues—on the Robbinsville website, at National Night Out, and at the Robbinsville Farmers Market; and put fliers at the Senior Center and Robbinsville Mobile Homes Park. “We’ve gotten it out to everybody, letting them know the changes, and we have been fielding phone calls every day since,” Rupp says. On Sept. 1, Robbinsville will begin to enforce the ban on plastic bags. They have designed tags for Solterrra to leave on rejected containers indicating why they have not been emptied. People will then have to wait for the next scheduled recycling day. “We’re hoping that everyone decides to work with us,” Rupp says. “Once your stuff is not picked up for a couple of weeks and you have no place to dump it, you’ll learn to put it out the correct way.” The Mercer County Improvement Authority is planning a reeducation campaign that will also culminate in increased enforcement. It will include a one-page piece to residents and will use print and social media and radio. The campaign will continue over several months so that residents have time to start changing their recycling behavior. “Our ultimate goal is to say, after maybe Jan. 1, ‘Your bucket won’t be collected if you have plastic bags and pizza boxes.’” The road to learning new recycling behaviors can be rocky, and townships can expect lots of phone calls during the transition. Rupp refers callers to videos on the Robbinsville website that illustrate how plastic bags get tangled up in the machinery, and closed bags get

thrown directly in the trash. “It’s not getting recycled so you’re defeating the purpose,” he says. Although Rupp says he understands people’s frustration and aversion to change, he adds, “If we can clean up our recycling, maybe we can reduce spending and still help the environment … We don’t want to raise taxes to do recycling; now it is almost as expensive as regular trash.” The Mercer County Improvement Authority does have an enforcement team, but assessing responsibility if a bucket is missed is difficult. It may not be clear whether the hauler was at fault, or they were legitimately skipping a recycling container that contained, say, fluorescent bulbs. And multiple trips by haulers to the same address are expensive. Fiumefreddo would like to see towns provide their own enforcers who accompany the truck and inspect the cans. “As long as the towns stand behind us, it will be a big success for recycling,” he says. Unlike most towns in Mercer County, Robbinsville no longer does its recycling through the Mercer County Improvement Authority. When the prior director of public works, Dino Colarocco, made that decision, the moti-

vation was to give Robbinsville officials more control, enabling them to call Solterra directly to determine why stops had been missed. But Rupp says, “I think that in the long run it might be cheaper to go with a group.” He plans to speak to Napoleon about their options for working with MCIA, but he thinks they are full for the upcoming year. With China limiting drastically the amount of contamination, Fiumefreddo says, “facilities had to put in more pickers or more technology to clean up the product more, and all that does is drive up the cost for processing.” Furthermore, the decreasing amounts of recycled goods that China is accepting has required diverting them to domestic mills, which pay less than the international ones. Two years ago, Fiumefreddo says, recycling cost Solterra $55 to $60 a ton to process and today costs are $85 or $90. “Ultimately, we want to reduce the cost of recycling to our towns, so we have to start somewhere,” Napoleon says. “If we can reduce the amount of contamination, ultimately we can reverse the increase in costs. This didn’t happen overnight, so the correction is not going to happen overnight.”

SEWER continued from Page 1 seven figures but never an actual, official invoice for the amount. “I’m feeling very confident saying that the mayor is not being truthful,” Fried said. Hamilton council president Jeff Martin said Yaede and her administration have never presented Hamilton Township council with documentation or proof that Robbinsville owes anything either. Martin is Yaede’s opponent for mayor in this November’s election. “This goes back to why we wanted the rate study,” Martin said. “It’s so we could actually see a calculation.” The study would review the usage of the township’s sewer system and the financial health of Hamilton’s Department of Water Pollution Control. The resulting data would project the next 10 years of the sewer system, and could potentially be used to put to rest long-lasting disputes between Hamilton Township council, the Hamilton administration and the government in

Robbinsville, which uses Hamilton’s sewer plant and system. Yaede claims she and her administration have never supported such a study, despite public comments to the contrary. “I have never supported a rate study,” the Republican mayor said. “In a public meeting, Dave [Kenny] said he believed we’d be open to it. He never committed to it.” But a video obtained by the Robbinsville Advance shows Yaede is only half-right. While Yaede has never made a statement publicly supporting a rate study, three officials from her administration—including Kenny—said during a May 14 budget meeting with township council that they wanted the study or otherwise intended to begin the process of obtaining one. In fact, the suggestion for a rate study originates from a Hamilton administration official, acting chief financial officer Phil Del Turco. The third official in the meeting was Water Pollution Control director Carrie Feuer, who also appeared to support the study.

At the end of the five-minute video, Del Turco shares his appreciation for council’s enthusiasm for a rate study, saying the Glen Gilmore administration ignored his suggestion for a similar analysis a decade ago, when he served as CFO for the Democratic mayor. “In 2006, it fell on deaf ears,” he said. Martin, a Democrat, assured Del Turco council supported him in the effort. “It’s a non-partisan issue,” Martin said in the video. “We’re all on board.” The “we” includes the council and the administration in Robbinsville Township, which took the rate study so seriously that Robbinsville’s government even offered to foot half of the $30,000 bill despite its residents accounting for less than 20 percent of the sewer system’s usage. In May, the Yaede administration took official steps to cover its half, altering its sewer budget to add $15,000 to the line item entitled “Auditing.” The rate study, in theory, would clear up the dispute about how much Robbinsville should be paying into Hamilton’s sewer system. But Yaede said, in an interview with the Robbinsville Advance Aug. 22, that a rate study would do no good because

it would take too long, and would not “break out” what Robbinsville owes for past usage. She alleges it’s merely a stall tactic by her township’s council. “There’s only one question to be answered: why is the Hamilton Township council delaying the payment from Robbinsville yet again?” Yaede said. “There have been a plethora of meetings and calls...In a year I cut taxes, why is the Hamilton Township council stalling?” Yaede’s opposition to the rate study has drawn suspicion from officials and residents in both towns, particularly because there have been questions about the finances of Hamilton’s Department of Water Pollution Control for months. The initial budget for WPC submitted to Hamilton council contained a handful of curious line items, including a 50-percent reduction for electricity at the treatment plant and a 40-percent decrease for the disposal of sludge, the solid byproduct of treating sewer waste. During a budget workshop in April, Martin raised these issues, asking Feuer, the WPC director, why the line item for electricity changed from $400,000 to $200,000, even though the treatment plant spent $367,000 on electricity in 2018. “Are we gonna spend 200?” Feuer responded. “Oh yeah, we’re gonna go

right by that.” Feuer added later in the meeting that there was “no way” WPC could decrease the amount of sludge by 40 percent to match the cut in disposal budget. She also expressed concern about how little wiggle room she had in the budget. “If you come into the red, you’re going to be fired...Is it too close for me?” Feuer said. “Yes, it’s too close for me because I don’t want to come in in the red.” During the May 14 meeting meant to clear up questions with the sewer budget, Del Turco admitted the budget had distressingly little surplus. “It’s going to be tight,” he said. On Facebook, Hamilton Township CFO John Barrett suggested the administration might be concealing something. Barrett has been a vocal critic of the Yaede administration since it suspended him in January for what it said was an abuse of sick time. “A rate study would expose the sewer utility as being insolvent and in need of a huge residential increase right before the November election,” Barrett wrote Aug. 22. “This increase was scheduled to happen in 2017, but Yaede directed [former business administrator John] Ricci not to execute the plan.” Fried said he is concerned about the possibility of a shortfall or insolvency, particu-

larly because any financial problems with the sewer division could cost Robbinsville and its sewer ratepayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. “We shouldn’t be playing games with a sewer authority,” Fried said. “It’s a big deal. I don’t think Hamilton is taking it seriously.” Despite the animosity, Fried said he isn’t looking to end the joint sewer agreement Robbinsville has had with Hamilton since 1976. Robbinsville had previously considered building its own treatment plant off Line Road, and Yaede has all but dared Fried to make a move. “We have heard every excuse, from phony bills to the need for committees, with which we have obliged,” Yaede said. “If he thinks we are so far off with the flow calculation, then he can meet with us at DEP and immediately get out of our water system.” Fried said leaving Hamilton isn’t an option, due to the amount of infrastructure and money Robbinsville has tied up in Hamilton’s system. “I’m not 100 percent sure the state will allow us to pull out, and do sewer on our end or join another authority,” Fried said. “I don’t think the DEP would allow it. I don’t think the DCA would allow it. And I don’t think Hamilton could legitimately afford it.”

The new restaurant taking the place of USA Country Diner along Route 130 in Robbinsville now has a name: Robbinsville Grille and Bar. And it turns out the name is more than just a nod to the eatery’s location—it’s an ode to the owners’ roots in town, too. Things have started to take shape for developers Akal Estates, LLC. which just received township approval to begin construction on the 5,500-square foot eatery. Demolition has been ongoing for a couple months now, with the goal of having tear down complete by Labor Day. Once complete, crews will have gut the entire interior of the building. The developers will use the existing building’s framework and foundation, but will have to raise the roof and replace some of the exterior walls. Due to the age of the building, brand new pipes and electrical components will have to be installed, as well. Financial manager Amanpreet Sandhu said the owners hope the eatery will be open in time for the Super Bowl in February 2020. When it opens, patrons can expect to find a familiar sports bar feel, with a collection of sports memorabilia on the walls and TVs tuned to the biggest games of the day around the interior. Food will be

“freshly prepared, high quality, popular cuisine” at a moderate price point. As the name suggests, the eatery will also have a bar, and the owners already possess a liquor license for the facility. The ownership group consists of family members Baljit Singh, Amrinder S. Sandhu, Ranjeet S. Sandhu, Deepinder S. Sandhu and Bikramjeet S. Sandhu, with two of the five family members living in Robbinsville. Sandhu, also a Robbinsville resident, said all the owners are huge sports fans, and wanted to build a local place where friends could come together and watch sports in a community atmosphere. “We’re really excited about this project,” Sandhu said. “This is a passion project. We’re excited to have something in Robbinsville to watch all the big games.” The family has three City Auto repair shops and two real estate companies in the area, but does have a background in hospitality. In India, the family owned a lodge with a restaurant and hotel. “It’s something we’ve seen before,” Sandhu said. Before the current activity, the former site of USA Country Diner sat vacant for 15 years along Route 130 in Robbinsville. Akal Estates bought the 2-acre lot with the diner at 1380 Route 130 in February 2017 for $1.25 million. It had been owned by Chrysoula LLC since December 2006.

Ravens, Giordano optimistic for upcoming season By Rich Fisher It was Nov. 4, 2017, and the Robbinsville High football team was in Willingboro to play the Chimeras in their homecoming game. The Ravens had exactly 16 players suited up, including seven sophomores, and were trailing 34-0 after one quarter of what would become a 41-8 loss. On the surface, it appeared that game was totally unnecessary, and Robbinsville would have been better off forfeiting. But that would indicate to those sophomores that quitting is OK. And by playing, it laid the groundwork for a foundation. “We went against a team that was athletically superior in all phases of the game to us,” coach Andrew Patterson said. “I’ll say it out loud. We knew we were gonna lose and so did the players. But if they don’t play the game, they never get to this 2019 season. If we run the table this year, if we win seven games, if we get to the playoffs and are successful, it’s because the seniors who were sophomores suited up for Willingboro knowing they had no chance to win the game.” One of those players is receiver Matt

Giordano, who will be key to whatever success the Ravens enjoy this year. As a junior, Giordano led Robbinsville in receptions (22) and receiving yards (456) and was second to quarterback Danny Surtz in touchdowns (5). Giordano recalled the Willingboro thrashing and has used it as a driving force ever since. “After that game, I knew I never wanted to get beat that bad again,” he said. “I started working, my friends started working. We never wanted to get put in that position again. If we could play them again I would love to get some revenge. I know it’s not gonna happen, but we always think about that; it’s just motivation.” A nucleus of current seniors endured an 0-9 sophomore year and improved to 4-6 last year. Included in the group are Surtz, Nick Carella, Connor Fitzsimmons, Matt Heverin and Dayyan Hamid. Giordano always has those guys in mind, and sees any success he or the Ravens have as the result of a team effort. He never wants the spotlight to himself. “You can get a lot done and be very successful when you don’t care who gets the credit,” Patterson said. “And that’s what he does. He just wants to

Matt Giordano led Robbinsville High football in receptions and receiving yards last season. Now a senior, he is part of an experienced team. (Photo by Rich Fisher.) win, he doesn’t care if he gets the ball, he doesn’t care if he makes the reception, he doesn’t care if he’s on the kick-

off team. Whatever he has to do to win, that’s what he’s been doing the past three years.” Rest assured he will get the ball, as Giordano and the talented Surtz are best friends who have developed a great chemistry over the years. Hard work has transformed Giordano into a formidable player. “He can catch balls, defend balls,” Patterson said. “He listens to his coaches, he helps his teammates out, makes people around him better. By him making Dan Surtz look better and the rest of the secondary look better, by him working hard enough in practice to make his other receivers look better, now the defenses that we play have more than just him to worry about because he helps the other guys get better. It sounds cliché but it’s true.” It wasn’t always the case. Patterson, now in his sixth year, noted that when Giordano came in as a freshman, he ran bad-looking routes as a receiver and couldn’t tackle well defensively. “He slowly worked at it,” Patterson said. “He’s not roll-out-of-bed awesome. He’s worked at it since day one.” Giordano began playing in 7th grade with the Robbinsville PAL; and many of

his current teammates were on his team back then. After a successful 8th-grade season, they felt if they stuck together, good things could happen in high school. Giordano, like most young players, felt he was automatically ready. “Yeah, you walk in and everyone thinks they’re the best,” he said. “Then you see who’s ahead of you, and you say ‘I gotta catch up. I gotta work.’” Asked what he thinks when watching film of himself running routes as a freshman, Giordano laughed and said, “It’s been a while since I’ve seen them … I don’t want to see them anymore.” At 5-9, 175 pounds, he is not a huge target. But through sheer repetition Giordano improved his routes, his coverage and his tackling. He also runs winter track, which helps his physique, and plays lacrosse, which emphasizes footwork. Both help in football, along with focusing on the sport itself. “You just run a lot of routes; make them more crisp,” he said. “You have to know how to beat somebody. That comes with experience. You just work at it. Footwork. Experience. Getting in games my sophomore year, seeing how other defenses play against us really helped. You learn when to cut, when to speed up, when to slow down.” Defensively, it was much of the same thing. “Again, it’s experience,” he said. “Reaction time is everything. One less step could be the difference between an interception or a touchdown the other way. Just a lot of experience, a lot of practice, a lot of learning.”

He credits constant backyard catches with his dad as a way of developing his hands, while over the summer he and his teammates constantly attended morning lift sessions and voluntary camps; or just got together to play flag football. “Even the little things help,” he said. “You’re running routes, you’re around football.” Giordano hopes to play college ball and is currently talking to several schools to see about his options. But first, he would like to finish his high school career on a winning team. Patterson feels it is possible. “I’m optimistic from the experience we put on the field,” he said. “ The majority of players on the field know what we’re doing and we have reinforcements at the sophomore and junior level as well who are very good players. This is probably the deepest team I’ve had since I’ve been here. We have legitimate third stringers at some positions who can actually challenge for a starting job. When I took over, I didn’t even have a first string. I had receivers playing guard. There was no depth chart.” Due to the influx of talent, and because those seven sophomores stuck it out, hopes are high. “Playing with each other all these years bought us a lot closer together, we trust each other,” Giordano said. “That’s great to have on the football field. You need 11 people that can trust the person next to them. That’s gonna be very helpful. I’m very excited for a lot of wins.” And very certain that days like Nov. 4, 2017 are a thing of the past.

Muir proves place as Ravens’ ‘true number one’ By Rich FisheR After spending just one season watching Lily Muir play first singles, Robbinsville coach Shari Schleifman paid Muir one of the highest compliments one can give in high school tennis. “She’s a true number one,” Schleifman said. “If you’re gonna ask for a number one player, Lily is a true number one player.” What makes that such high praise is that a true number one is often hard to find in high school. Many of the first singles players are the ones who won their stepladder challenge matches, and they spend the season taking the hit against superstars so other teammates have a chance to win some matches. “Not Lily,” Schleifman said. “She went out and beat every team we

needed her to beat for us. Usually at number one, you hope you get something of quality from them. But she literally gave us a point nearly every match. She won 16 matches and only lost three or four times last year, and it was usually against really tough opponents. But she played everyone hard. Even against tougher opponents she went three sets.” It was Muir’s first season at the top of the lineup after she spent her freshman and sophomore years at second singles. “I felt like I played some really good matches at first singles,” the senior said. “It was a lot more challenging than second. There are some people this year I want to work on beating who beat me last year.” Muir is a lifelong tennis player, starting at age 6 after exploring several other

18Robbinsville Advance | September 2019

sports. No one in her family plays, but “I guess tennis really stuck.” She began to play tournaments and got involved with junior team tennis. After taking a break, Muir began playing again recently. Her ratings dropped due to inactivity, but at one time she was No. 1 in her district’s age group. She is currently No. 130 in Middle States rankings. Last year, Muir made the NJSIAA state singles tournament and helped Robbinsville to the first Colonial Valley Conference Valley Division title in program history. She also won her match against Cinnaminson in the state team tournament. One of Lily’s big attributes is setting the tone of a match. “I’m usually the one to set the pace,” Muir said. “Once the pace changes, it sometimes throws me off, but I try to adjust.” According to her coach, Muir has few weaknesses and little problem adjusting. “Lily has a great all-around game,” Schleifman said. “She has a really good serve. She can definitely take you out on a serve. She’s got really good ground strokes and she’s got good volleys. She really is an all-around player, an all-court player. “She’s hard to play. She’s a hard hitter and she has great movement with slice, she can hit a topspin, she can hit a one-handed backhand, she can hit a two-handed backhand. Her game is all-around. She can compete with anybody. I never watched her not be able to compete with a serve-and-volleyer, I’ve never watched her not be able to compete with a baseliner. She really can maneuver her game to play whatever. That’s probably her strength.” There is another part of Muir’s game at which she is underrates herself, but that is just part of an attitude that keeps her always striving to do better. “I need to get more consistent with the mental toughness,” she said. Not according to Schleifman. “She knows how to win,” the coach said. “I’ve seen her down love-four, onefive. She can take that deep breath and if you go over to talk to her and explain, just help her through it, she really does know how to fix her game to adapt to her opponent’s game if she needs to, or how to maintain something. That is her strength. She’s capable of figuring that out. She’s very mentally tough.” Muir acknowledges that sometimes it takes her a while to warm up, which could lead to an 0-6 loss in her first set, but that “I’ll finally start getting into a rhythm and be able to come back.” Muir said her two biggest goals when it comes to performance this year, is sharpening a new backhand shot, and having the ability to finish off matches instead of letting her opponent get back in it. She is also looking for a return trip to states and hopes to go beyond the second round, where she lost last year. And she especially wants to have a good showing at the Mercer County

Lily Muir returns as the first singles for the Robbinsville High School girls’ tennis team this fall. (Photo by Rich Fisher.) Tournament. “I never really did well in counties,” said Muir, who is considering playing college tennis at Stockton University. “I’ve always had an injury or I’m not feeling good. I really want to work on getting further in counties this year. My freshman year I played the second seed (at second singles) in the second round. It was a really close match but I started getting cramps in my hamstring. It was close, it was a really good match. My sophomore year it was the second or third round and I got cramps in my calf. I tried to work through it but my coach at the time said I had to withdraw. It stunk because I was coming back after losing the first set 0-6.” Last year, the stakes were raised at first singles, and she fell to the top seed in the first round. “She was in the battle for fourth or fi fth seed, so she was at least the fourth or fi fth best player in the county last year,” Schleifman said. “We’re in a very tough county, and I would say she’s in the top five in the county hands down again this year. When she’s on and playing well and the way she’s capable, she’s definitely a top five player.” Her efforts will be needed as Muir and Vindhya Pasala, the team’s Most Valuable Player after winning 16 matches last year, are the Ravens’ lone seniors. “The combination of those two is very important,” the coach said. “We have a strong sophomore core, but we are definitely a young team that’s building to competition. We have young talent. Our future is very bright. This year it could go either way. We’re in that situation where if our young talent flourishes early, we’re good.” One thing is certain: they have a true No. 1 to set the tone.
