The Ballet Studio marks 50 years of dance and family

What to know about New Jersey’s plastic bag and polystyrene foam product ban

By JAsMiNe Lee Fifty years ago, Lisa Zola’s mother created a space that welcomes dancers to express themselves and leave their worries at the door. Lisa Zola-De Libero continues to follow in her mother’s footsteps with the help of her staff to ensure their students’ smiles and laughter for years to come. The Ballet Studio is a recreational dance studio where its students don’t just learn how to dance, but experience a space filled with joy and happiness as soon as they walk through those doors. This year, The Ballet Studio is celebrating its 50th anniversary and has maintained its traditions and philosophy for decades. “Their daughters came to us, their granddaughters came to us, and now their greatgranddaughters dance with us. Four generations of dancers,” said Lisa Zola-De Libero, the director of The Ballet Studio. Zola-De Libero said that 50 years later, she still has the greatgranddaughters of women who have danced with them coming and dancing at the studio. See STUDIO, Page 12

A new orchard sprouts on grounds of a familiar farm By SUe FerrArA Spend a morning with organic farmer Jim Kinsel, and his wife Sherry Dudas, owners of an Ellisdale Road farm in Chesterfield, and you might agree with my daughter’s conclusion after our visit. “Mom,” she said, “people think farmers just put seeds in the ground. They don’t realize every-

thing farmers have to know and do to grow food.” That observation is true, but what seems more true to me is this: Jim Kinsel is a modern-day Ben Franklin, using his farm in Chesterfield, as Franklin once used his New Jersey farm, to improve farming methods for fellow farmers in an effort to yield healthier and more abundant food choices for consumers.

Yes, that Benjamin Franklin– printer, postmaster, and diplomat– retired at the age of 42, leaving Philadelphia for a farm on the Delaware river in Burlington County. According to a 1929 research paper Franklin purchased the farm as an estate, but it became “a miniature experiment station.” Franklin carried out “projects in drainage, in crop rotation, and See ORCHARD, Page 10

When walking into the grocery store and going about your business, many people have likely experienced the frustration of making it to the register, then realizing—”I forgot the reusable bags!” No worries, you think, opting for plastic bags instead, hoping the environment will forgive you as a regular consumer trying to do their best. Under new statewide legislation enforced from May 4 onwards, New Jersey businesses are now unable to distribute and sell single-use plastic bags, as well as polystyrene foam products, making this moment a figment of the past for what is being described as “the strongest” bag ban in the nation. Residents cannot receive plastic bags from grocery stores equal to or larger than 2,500 square feet, restaurants, pharmacies, as well as retail and convenience stores. Likewise, polystyrene plates, cups and utensils are no longer going See BAGS, Page 8

AROUND TOWN

Historical society to re-open museum on May 1 The Bordentown Historical Society will re-opening the Bordentown Friends Meetinghouse museum on May 1 with the grand opening of their new Joseph Bonaparte exhibit. The exhibition marks the first public opening of the meetinghouse in more than two years. Guests will be hosted in the space following the most significant renovation inside the meetinghouse in more than 20 years. Starting May 1, the meetinghouse will be open twice a month for visitation, in addition to special events throughout 2022 to educate the public on Joseph Bonaparte, the former King of Naples and Spain and, perhaps, Bordentown’s most famous former resident. Like many organizations, the doors of the Friends Meetinghouse closed in March 2020 with the onset of the Covid pandemic. Meanwhile, BHS pursued virtual and outdoor or off-site opportunities to bring Bordentown’s incredible history to the public. Now, two years later, the Bordentown Friends Meetinghouse

museum, the oldest Quaker meetinghouse in Burlington County still located on its original foundation, is re-opening with passion. Visitors to the space will notice a cleaned-up appearance and refinished floors funded through a grant from the Society of Colonial Wars of New Jersey, “We’re extremely excited to welcome guests into the meetinghouse and offer them a first class experience,” noted BHS co-president, Dr. Steven Lederman. It is fitting the first exhibit to grace the space will feature Joseph Bonaparte, the eldest brother of and advisor to, of course, Napoleon Bonaparte. Coincident with the recent preservation of the former Point Breeze property once owned by Joseph Bonaparte in Bordentown, the BHS has assembled an exhibit and will present a series of events to explore this famous resident’s impact on America and Bordentown. Peter Tucci, a BHS director and the world’s largest private collector of Joseph Bonaparte letters and memorabilia, has

been hands on with helping to assemble the series. “Joseph Bonaparte was happy to open his land and share his resources with the people of Bordentown when he lived here. It’s fitting that spirit should live on there today,” Tucci said. In addition to the Meetinghouse exhibit, BHS will assemble a series of speakers and events to carry through the rest of 2022. Guests can expect to be treated to presentations that explore aspects of Bonaparte’s life and his relationship with his surroundings here in Bordentown. Experts will offer narratives on the furniture that came from the mansion that is on display at the Friends meetinghouse, an archaeologist’s perspective on life on the property, a review of artworks that were on display in Joseph’s mansions, and more. Additional details will be announced in the coming months. NEWS continued from Page 3 Joseph Bonaparte Exhibit is scheduled for Sunday, May 1 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 302 Farnsworth Ave. Visitors are welcome to stop by to view the Bonaparte exhibit. Expected to be on hand is author Patricia Tyson Stroud, to sign updated paperback versions of her book, The Man Who Had Been King. Thereafter, the Meetinghouse will be open regularly at least two Saturdays monthly from May to December, or by appointment. The Bordentown Historical Society is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, founded in 1930. The Historical Society’s mission is to preserve, teach and inspire curiosity about Bordentown’s rich history. Web: bordentownhistoricalsociety.com.

European royalty to go on exhibit in Bordentown When Joseph Bonaparte left the United States forever in 1839, he gave away many of his valuables to his friends. After his death in 1844, it was a matter of time before the rest of his valuables and household belongings would be sold. From the auctions of 1845 and 1847, Bordentown residents were able to purchase authentic relics treasured by the ex-king of Naples and Spain. Over the past several decades, the Bordentown Histori-

cal Society has been extremely grateful to have received some of these important relics through donations from people who understand Bordentown’s history. For the first time in the existence of the Bordentown Historical Society, along with the historical society’s director, Peter Tucci, have brought together many artifacts and furnishings associated with Joseph Bonaparte for public display and placed them under one roof. For many months to come, the public will have opportunities to see this collection and experience America’s connection to famous European royalty. In addition, a series of discussions featuring distinguished speakers, events, and other surprises are planned. After Napoleon Bonaparte’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the family dynasty that he strategically established in countries across Europe was shattered. In the aftermath, members and their followers fled by any necessary means to escape the fate that awaited them. While Napoleon was captured and exiled to the island of St. Helena in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean where he spent the remainder of his life, siblings like his oldest brother, Joseph, boarded a merchant vessel under an assumed name and in disguise bound for America where he spent almost the next two decades in self exile.

PEPPLER FUNERAL HOME

Celebrating 50 Years of Helping our Community Here in Bordentown

Ironically, the bluffs of Bordentown ultimately was where he chose to build his palatial country estate, which was considered the grandest in the nation outside of the executive mansion (White House) and probably the first in North America to be landscaped with a Picturesque theme in mind. Consisting of 12 miles of carriage roads and fertile farms spread along the Crosswicks Creek, this 1,800-acre paradise welcomed the average Bordentown native in addition to notable dignitaries of the day like the Marquis de Lafayette, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and his dear friend and Bordentown son, Joseph Hopkinson. Most important of all was that within the walls of his residency, Joseph Bonaparte probably had the largest private library and art collection in the US. For such a small community consisting primarily of Friends (Quakers), this was quite a sight to behold. Rarely has a former European monarch settled in America. –Doug Kiovsky

Title Evolution Celebrating 10 years in the Bordentown Community By Michelle Hennessey Title Evolution, the fledgling company that began with three co-workers in four rooms on Farnsworth Avenue, is celebrating their first 10 years as part of the Bordentown community this month. Determination and ambition were never lacking with the partners at Title Evolution. But an uncertain economy and dead housing market meant that they had an uphill climb to become a viable company in an arena where fees are regulated and they couldn’t offer a discount to woo clients from the established competition. “At the companies where we were working, we saw that we weren’t able to provide the level of service we wanted to, and knew we could do better.” says Partner

Jennifer Costner. And do better they have. In 2014, veteran Robert Foley joined the team and was made an associate partner one year later. This addition, along with more favorable market conditions and their now well established record of exceptional service, made the firm’s upward trajectory seemingly unstoppable. Foley was eager to “join this small group that had made such an impact in so little time. We’re not so small any more. We grew but maintained that high level that was the vision of the founding partners.” Title Evolution now employs 18 full-time experienced staff members with more than 300 years of combined experience in the title business, and is spread over two buildings,

but dedication to customer service remains their “absolute number one priority,” says partner Joanne Paul. “We started with a goal of one title order per day and now we average 100 a month. I really think it’s because we’re dedicated to treating our customers like family and they keep returning because of it.” One of their inspirations was Joanne’s late husband,

Billy “Nails” Paul, a lifetime town resident who encouraged Joanne, Jennifer and third partner Steve Barry to take action when they saw the market was ripe for a new contender with more concentration on service. He continued his support with sweat equity, building furniture and putting in hours of “grunt work.” “He believed in us,” says Costner, “and that made us believe more in

ourselves and get where we are today. His legacy lives in these walls.” Title Evolution’s many successes have also had a ripple effect on the town the partners call home. The company now supports community events including Riverfest and the Cranberry Festival, and local charities including Hope Hose Co., the Telephone Pioneers of America, ARC Mercer and the Joshua Hare Shane Foundation. Paul was even moved to sponsor the longneeded roof on the Clara Barton School House with help from Trenton Roofing. “We like to think our enthusiasm for our work and community is contagious” says Paul. “We work here, we live here – we love this town. We hope to keep growing and have even more clients join the family.”

BAGS continued from Page 1 to be available for purchase. On Nov. 4, 2020, Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation banning single-use plastic bags. JoAnn Gemenden is the Executive Director of the New Jersey Clean Communities Council, a nonprofit organization leading two public outreach campaigns to prepare residents for the changes. Of their campaigns, Bag Up NJ encouraged customers to have reusable bags, while ‘Skip the Straw’ helped publicize the Nov. 4, 2021 legislation now in effect where plastic straws are granted only upon request of the customer. Their toolkit for spreading information on NJCCC’s website for Bag Up NJ, bagupnj.com, has recently expanded, going from a few social media posts to a wealth of PSAs, signs, lists, fliers, and even billboards—many of the resources are also available in multiple languages. “Whether you’re a resident, a business owner or an employer, we have a myriad of graphics and downloads,” Gemenden said. “It’s going to take all of us to share the message to ensure that we’re all prepared for May 4.” She expected that the platform will continue growing as new events are scheduled, including bag giveaways, which Gemenden noted are more likely

The Long Branch group Clean Ocean Action recovered about 9,305 shopping bags and 1,057 foam takeout containers from New Jersey beaches in 2021. Plastic in general

accounted for 73.87% of the materials volunteers collected, but paper bags are an issue, too, because of the amount of water, energy, wood and other components used in the manufacturing process. “It’s not an issue of being recyclable, it’s a matter of being sustainable,” Gemenden

explained of their environmental impact. “Paper bags have just as big of a carbon footprint, in some respects.” Given the pandemic’s effect on global supply chains, paper bags are even “difficult to find,” as Gemenden added. “A lot of retail stores are allowed to use

paper under the new law, but they can’t find them.” Under the May 4 rules, singleuse paper bags can be delegated to restaurants, convenience and retail stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores less than 2,500 square feet. When it comes to shopping from home with delivery or pickup services, though, Gemenden said that each store must come to their own decision. A NJ.com article from April 7, “Online grocery orders would get temporary break from N.J.’s plastic bag ban under bill” by Steven Rodas, states that Stop & Shop and Whole Foods are now opting for reusable bags. However, ShopRite and Walmart are yet to make a decision. Some counties, like Passaic, are trying to pass legislation that “[gives] grocery stores a reprieve from the bag ban when providing delivery or pickup services” to figure out their future plans. Exemptions to the plastic bag law in grocery stores are for produce, such as fruits and vegetables, raw meat or fish, flowers, and other items detailed in a full chart at nj.gov/dep/get-past-plastic. Gemenden confirmed that it is acceptable for shoppers to bring their own plastic or paper bags with them— grocery stores are just prohibited

from providing them to the customer. Residents can opt to bring their own bags, cardboard boxes, or even laundry bins to shop at the grocery store. “I think we’re going to see a lot of innovation being developed over the next couple of years,” Gemenden said of the creative approaches different companies and groups may take. She predicted that free bag giveaways will be common after the ban as a way to ensure everyone can economically, and environmentally, have the best option. Gemenden maintained that litter abatement is the ultimate goal. “If you read the intro to the single use plastics law, you’re gonna learn that it’s really all about litter prevention. They estimate that in 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Plastic really doesn’t go away. It just breaks down into smaller and smaller particles. Then, it gets eaten by fish and then we in turn, eat the fish. We’re just trying to clean up our ecosystem and prevent the litter that we see on our roadways, and in our waterways, and start making a dent in the plastic that’s proliferating our oceans,” she said. From May 4, NJ’s single-use plastic law will supersede all municipal plastic bag and straw ordinances. Penalties for noncompliance, according to the Bag

New Jersey’s plastic bag ban is expected to catch many consumers off guard when it goes into effect on May 4. Up NJ website, are “a warning for a first offense, up to $1,000 for a second offense, and up to $5,000 for a third or subsequent offense.” After this ban goes into effect, Gemenden said that next on the horizon could be limiting the release of balloons, which turn into litter when they inevitably land somewhere far away. She remarked that there are other ways to celebrate without harming the environment, advising people to either blow bubbles or

plant trees. “Many people don’t know that the Mylar balloons can actually lead to a power outage if they get caught in overhead wires,” Gemenden explained. “We’re not trying to be the enforcement police out there, but one of those things people just don’t think about, where the balloon goes after they let it go.” Another upcoming campaign will focus on ‘skipping the stuff,’ where consumers and businesses can mutually benefit from not giving or receiving utensils, napkins, ketchup and other plastic wares for takeout. “We have to figure out a way to work with businesses to save them money and to lessen the waste stream every day,” she said. Gemenden expressed hope that these progressive measures will have a positive influence elsewhere in the United States. “I hope we are certainly the leader in this campaign, and I know from speaking with other states that they are looking to New Jersey to [see] how the rollout goes. I think some are envious that they didn’t ban both. Some states have banned thinner plastic, but they’ve allowed a thicker plastic bag which is deemed reusable. So I applaud New Jersey for going the extra mile and sort of pulling the band aid off all at once,” Gemenden said.

ORCHARD continued from Page 1 especially in the utilization of the newer grasses and in liming and fertilization.” Many accounts about Franklin refer to him, as well as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, as “the fathers of scientific American farming.” The Rutgers College of Agriculture published a history of NJ farming in 1927 recounting a tale about Franklin’s promotion of Plaster of Paris use for fertilizer. Franklin reportedly “chose a grass field along a much traveled highway, and sprinkled the plaster in the form of large letters ‘THIS HAS BEEN PLASTERED.’” Rain soon washed away the white letters, “but days later, the letters stood out clearly” as grass grew in the place where the plaster had been. Franklin lived on his New Jersey estate from 1748-1757 before being pressed back into government service. Now, about 15 miles northeast of Franklin’s 18th century farming playground, one finds Kinsel doing much the same on his 118-acre, 21st century farm. Like Franklin, Kinsel is exploring how to improve crop fertilization. He wants to plant unusual fruits. He is constantly thinking and learning. For 30 years, Kinsel and Dudas worked the land at Honey Brook farm in Pennington, land owned by the Watershed Institute. When the agreement ended

last year, the couple made the Chesterfield property their home farm. Honey Brook ran one of the oldest Community Supported Agriculture programs in the area, but support for the CSA dwindled. Kinsel says when he started as an organic farmer, people didn’t have easy access to organic vegetables. “The market has changed for organics,” Kinsel tells me. “Now, organics are readily available. You have dozens of delivery services bringing organics and meals to homes. The support for local farms is waning. Losing money means selling a tractor, or going into debt.” So, much like Ben Franklin did during his lifetime, Kinsel decided to pivot and do something new. “At some point,” Kinsel says, “planting cabbage becomes boring.” But Kinsel always found the community aspect of farming most rewarding. So the quest to continue farming with the community in mind led to a new adventure: Chesterfield Organic Orchards. Our tour began at a compost pile. As an organic farmer, Kinsel has consistently made and used compost. But today, he is running a grant-supported experiment on two methods of composting. A fig tree grows in compost. (Photo by E. M. Hume.) Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, a program based at the University of Maryland-College Park. Without getting too deep in the muck here, both methods involve creating compost mounds using manure and wood chips. Composting using the ASP method means those ingredients are piled over a piping system which can blow air into the pile to hasten the process. ASP composting can take a matter of weeks. Windrow composting is more laborintensive in that farmers essentially have to create long rows of composting material–the windrows–and then those windrows have to be turned by machine. This composting method can take 6 to 12 months to complete. Kinsel’s proposal aims to figure out which method of composting is most cost-effective for farmers to use. And there is no shortage of materials for his experiment. New Jersey has many smallto-midsize horse farms; manure is plentiful. Local tree companies deliver wood chips to Kinsel’s farm. His initial results lead him to conclude that windrows is the better way to compost materials like manure and wood chips; the ASP method is suited to difficult to compost materials like food waste. Leaving the compost pile behind— keep in mind the piping underneath—we enter a greenhouse where the temperature reads 76 degrees. But how is that possible on a day when the temperature is not much above 50? While the ASP system forces air into the compost pile, the warm air generated by the decomposition of ingredients can be sucked back

into the greenhouse. Electrical cords run along the floor and a grid of pipes spans part of the room, all rigged up by Kinsel. The blowers are nothing more than what one would see being used to inflate bouncing houses for birthday parties. The heating via the compost pile has captured Kinsel’s imagination, but it needs tweaking. Kinsel notes the “heated air coming through the ASP plumbing is also very, very humid. We are now working on a way to dehumidify the heated air using a giant radiator made out of 2” X 40’ aluminum irrigation pipe, which is slightly damaged and so unusable as an irrigation pipe.” Kinsel is either Ben Franklin reincarnated, or he channels Franklin through the compost pile. Kinsel laughs and tells me his dad was a physicist at Bell Labs. “So I was a nerdy type,” he says. Readers can see the ASP process on the Chesterfield Orchards Facebook page. Inside that very warm greenhouse sat an array of vegetation, all part of Kinsel’s next farming experiment–fruit bearing plants, both trees and bushes, from many corners of the world. Kinsel began with fig trees, what Dudas jokingly calls her husband’s “new passion.” Kinsel tells me about figbid. com, the Ebay for all things fig, and then gives me a brief history lesson. He tells me today’s fig tree varieties traveled to the US with immigrants from places like Italy, Greece, Albania, Turkey, Germany and Spain, immigrants who mainly settled in New York City and planted their trees in containers. Over time, through natural selection, people had trees which could withstand the weather in the Northeast. “Figs are well suited to hobby growers,” Kinsel says, “because you can grow them in pots and put them in a garage for the winter.” Kinsel is playing with 300 varieties of fig trees. He explains some trees need the fig wasp for pollination; but fig wasps don’t live in New Jersey. Other fig tree varieties can produce fruit without fertilization, a process known as parthenocarpy. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word comes from Greek–parthenos, meaning virgin, and karpos meaning fruit. One of the fig trees is potted in a macro bin filled with compost. Macro bins are large, white and square containers found on farms and usually moved with a forklift. The fig in compost looks beautiful and healthy while it soaks up the joys of this greenhouse sauna. Alongside the fig trees sit two Asian pear trees Kinsel bought from the Kim Farm in Yardville. Also in the greenhouse, an array of fruit bearing plants including buckthorn, persimmon, pomegranate, pawpaws, Nanking cherry–a tart red

through its annual kite-flying festival that is perfect for entertaining more than just families. Guests can make, bring or choose a kite to use while country music, pony rides, games and other activities round out the day. Animal lovers looking to observe Terhune’s sheep shearer cutting fleece off of the animal may do so on Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. while other farm creatures, including dwarf Nigerian goats, donkeys, and bunnies, mill about leisurely. If that “shear” amount of fun activities are not enough, for the adults in attendance, the Wine Orchard is open with Terhune’s 18 varieties of wine available by the glass, tasting flights, and in slushies. Light fare will be available for everyone, as well as apple cider donuts and three varieties of apple cider made from the orchard’s own fruit. As the season changes, welcoming in the sun and blooming flowers, central New Jersey shows its charming, rustic effervescence through a selection of sprawling wineries. Take in the sweet scents of grapes, as well as fun in the open air, while state COVID-19 policies allow for larger, mostly outdoor, gatherings. There are events planned for the entire month of May, as well as specifically for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8, where it’s only fitting for these important family figures to relax — whether that be with a glass of wine in hand or just to bask in nature’s warmth.

eration of the Mount family to farm in the central New Jersey area. “It’s just a fun way to celebrate the renewal season.” The Mount family has a long lineage dedicated to owning, and running, the farm for more than 45 years, according to Tannwen Mount. The 250-acre property is open all year long, but the warmer months are where the Mount family’s expertise gets to shine. As part of those plans, Terhune’s Winery Weekend Music Series will see local musicians playing out in the wine orchard, where Mount hopes that their “historic” apple trees will be ready in time for the full visual experience. Reservations are not required. On Mother’s Day weekend in particular, the lively tunes are set to continue, but mothers will receive $2s off of Terhune’s tasting flights. Mount said that while the orchard is a family friendly place, their goal for May 8 is to help mothers take it easy. Then, the owner of Terhune, Pam Mount, is set to run her free annual herb and garden class on Saturday, May 14, to help attendees recognize the timely importance of preparing their gardens. “We’re farmers here at Terhune Orchards, in addition to the winery and

other things. We like to share our knowledge with everyone and everyone, after a long winter, is ready to get out and about and get their gardens ready,” Tannwen Mount said. Terhune’s pick-your-own crop is also back on as soon as their asparagus pokes its head out of the ground, which is set to

happen in early May. The farm grows 46 different crops in total, and about a dozen of them are offered in this “hands-on experience of being their own farmers,” as Tannwen Mount noted. Wine tastings are $20 per person. 908-788-0400 or www.unionvillevineyards.com. It’s release weekend for the newest edition of Unionville Winery’s three Rhône-inspired wines, the Hunterdon Mistral Series, which have a uniquely French background. General manager

John Cifelli explained that the inspiration came from the term for the intensely frigid, powerful wind that travels through Southern France to the coastland. “The mistral is a wind that blows through the [Rhône] River Valley every spring, and so we named this collection of wines after the wind,” Cifelli said. The force gives grapes grown during the fierce weather a unique advantage. By

ridding the sky of clouds and the cooled vines of insects, the grapes are less likely to rot, making for a delicious, prized wine. Tastings are by appointment at noon, 2, and 4 p.m. Guests can enjoy à la carte lunch options made-to-order by Skillman cafe Blawenburg Bistro, and there will also be live guitar music with singersongwriter James Popik on Sunday.

Mingling Spanish cuisine and luxury wine, Old York Cellars prides itself on its diversity, continuing that trend for Mother’s Day weekend. Anthony Rossi, director of B2B & partnerships, recommends that anyone looking to spend the holiday in style make reservations for Old York’s array of wine tasting experiences supplemented by live music acts and numerous culinary options. For $55, the “Special Mother’s Day Platter & Wine” features an artisan board of Spanish chorizo, serrano ham, gouda and manchego cheese, olives, almonds and grapes. Farmers market b(l)ooming with vegan restaurants By Jack Deegan

In recent years, the vegan movement has grown considerably, with new restaurants popping up every day as more and more people take to the lifestyle. “When we first signed the lease for this place there was an article in Forbes about how the vegan movement was blowing up and we didn’t even think that would be a thing. We just wanted to do what we were doing!” says Francesca Avitto, co-owner of Lady and the Shallot. “When this place first opened, there wasn’t another vegan place from here to Princeton. We just want to see more healthy places and more vegan places open.” Now more than ever, the vegan movement for a healthier lifestyle abstaining from using any animal products is becoming appealing to more people. People of all ages are switching to this lifestyle for health and to try and make the world a safer place.

8SIX09 | May 2022

“We have people from all different walks of life, we have old retired people trying to watch their health and then the young generation who’s gonna change the world, it’s amazing to see the different demographics that come in because it’s all over now,” Avitto says. Before Lady and the Shallot opened, it would have been difficult to find a vegan restaurant near the Mercer County area. Now, places like the Trenton Farmers Market is overflowing with healthy eating options that include two vegan restaurants: The Lady and the Shallot and the Savory Leaf Café. Lady and the Shallot came onto the scene in 2018. Founders Francesca Avitto and Kate Wnek looked to make plant-based comfort foods that not only tasted good, but also made you feel good. It wasn’t always their goal to open up a vegan restaurant though. That came out of the blue on one fateful evening. Francesca has been vegetarian since

she was 17, and went vegan five years ago. Kate decided to become vegan at the same time. “It was a big turnaround for me, I grew up eating everything, so it was hard for me to stop. But over time we just went with the flow,” she says. The pair had a catering events company seven years ago, when they weren’t vegan. They cooked upscale catering, and did intimate dinner parties where they cooked in clients’ kitchens in the Princeton area. “It was pretty cool, but it wasn’t as rewarding as making people feel healthy,” Francesca says. They still do catering, and while at first their goals for the future were more along the lines of world domination, with locations everywhere making everyone in the world healthy, they have scaled those back a bit to something more realistic. Right now, their big future plan is to go all in on their sauces and to get them sold in stores. “We really want to do a sauce line,”

Francesca says. “We’re really into our sauces, we think they’re really good, our customers love them. We started selling them and we want to do them wholesale to get them in really good supermarkets and have everyone able to eat a very healthy, limited-ingredient sauce,” Francesca said. For a long time, the lack of vegan restaurants made it very difficult for people to adopt the lifestyle. “It was very hard to be vegan back then in 1997, you had to either go into Manhattan or cook it yourself! So that was the only thing that stopped me from being fully vegan,” Francesca says. That same challenge is what led Eduardo Calderon to open up his vegan restaurant, Savory Leaf Cafe, at the Farmers Market back in 2019. For over a decade before opening, Eduardo had been a vegan and always struggled with finding healthy options. Authentic and flavorful food has always been important to him, and it was

the idea of making good healthy food for good souls to enjoy. “I’ve been a vegan for about 15 years now, and it was always difficult to find something to eat, so I kinda like, as a joke, said I’m going to open up my own place. But it actually made sense, so that’s how it came about, out of necessity but it was actually a good opportunity,” Calderon says. When it came to his vegan lifestyle, there wasn’t an overnight change where he stopped everything in favor of going vegan. It unfortunately came from some food poisoning that would end up changing his life forever. “I got sick really bad one time from some cold cuts I had had, and from that point, I had stopped eating poultry and then a few months later just only fish and vegetables and then slowly taking one thing out,” he says. Calderon worked in computer development for 15 years and finance for 20 years before deciding to switch careers again. He wanted more control over his career, and found that in the restaurant industry. As for where he learned how to cook, it’s a passion that he has been practicing and perfecting his entire life. Spending his childhood surrounded by food in a home where he was always cooking, he took to it naturally. “I’ve always grown up cooking. I’m

Left: tacos from Lady and the Shallot. Right: ribs from Savory Leaf Café. Both of these vegan restaurants are in Trenton Farmers Market. (Facebook photos.) fortunate to have been raised in a home where we always were cooking,” he says. “My dad always used to say my last name, Calderon, was for someone who was always cooking!” Calderon wanted to bring the flavors he grew up with into the vegan industry. “What I wanted to do was take a lot of the foods that I enjoy already normally and take out all the other stuff, but keep the flavor still in there,” Eduardo said. This all started with Savory Leaf’s signature dish, the vegan ribs. From there on out, all of the recipes were created by Calderon and his partner, Chris. They

even go as far as to make their own “cold cuts” for the sandwiches. “My partner Chris and I came up with everything, It started off originally our main thing was ribs, and then we started looking into other kind of foods we could turn vegan, and we came up with it all ourselves,” Eduardo said. One thing that makes Savory Leaf cafe different is the experimentation in their recipes. Calderon is determined to not let anything go to waste and wants to make the most of what he has, turning it all into something for people to enjoy. “Right now something that we’re mak-

ing is pork sliders using banana peels. We make banana bread here, and I was seeing a pile of peels and I started researching and seeing what other people were doing and I started using it and it became a hit!” Eduardo said. Savory Leaf Cafe also has a food truck. “People were asking if we could cater here, and from there I got the idea that it would be easier if we had some sort of vehicle to transport stuff around and cook in,” Calderon says. Calderon wants to continue growing the business. “We’re in the process now of expanding into another location in the Mercer area, keeping this one as well, but in a more commercialized environment to test it out in the open outside of the farmers market,” he says. Calderon is from Florida. He has been in the Trenton area for over 20 years. “My daughter moved here (for college), so I just kind of followed her up, and she finished school here and moved away and now I’m kind of stuck here! But I like the area a lot. It’s been very nice,” he says. Both the Savory Leaf Cafe and the Lady and the Shallot are located at the Trenton Farmers Market at 960 Spruce St., Lawrence NJ 08648. More info about each restaurant can be found at either savoryleafcafe.com or facebook.com/ ladyandtheshallot.

Hamilton Dental Associates How to Pick the Perfect Pediatric Dentist for Your Kids Your child’s oral health is a complex issue for parents to deal with throughout childhood. Finding a pediatric dentist for your child’s ongoing oral health needs requires careful consideration before committing. If you make a good choice in your child’s pediatric dentist, you can help set the tone for your child’s relationship with their dental health for the rest of their life. Knowing what to look for when selecting a pediatric dentistry practice can make a difference in your child’s oral health. Here are some of the most important factors to consider before making your child’s first appointment. *** Know the Difference Between a Pediatric and Family Dentist. When picking a dentist for your child’s first dental checkup, you might do a quick Google search and find a nearby family dentistry practice and

Finding a good pediatric dentist for you child can help them develop a positive relationship with dental health. call it a day. However, did you know that while a family dentist can treat patients of all ages, they might not have the same level of training as a pediatric dentist? Not every dentist can practice on children. Dentists have to undergo years of extra training before diagnosing and treating children.

Children’s oral health presents unique challenges that adult dentists don’t have to deal with, so pediatric dentists must undergo specialist training to deal with these factors. Additionally, the training helps pediatric dentists learn how to better communicate with their young patients and have them feel as

comfortable as possible in what can be an overwhelming situation. *** A Kid-Friendly Atmosphere. For many people, going to the dentist can spark feelings of anxiety and unease from the moment you step through the door. These feelings can get magnified in a child’s mind with their wild imaginations and distrust of new experiences. So when you’re deciding on a pediatric dental office to bring your child to for their next checkup, check out how the vibe of the website and office feels. If you look online and in the actual building and you’re seeing a healthy dose of kids, bright colors, and a general sense that kids can come in and not feel overwhelmed by the office, it’s generally a good sign. A warm, open, and happy environment can do a lot of good for your child’s experience at our kid’s dentist’s office in Hamilton, NJ. *** Initial Consultations. Building a good rapport between your child and their dentist remains a vital component of their dental experience. You want your child to be able to trust their dentist and feel comfortable in the chair during the examination.

Paragon Sport Spine & Wellness Resources for Pelvic Health Most of us have heard the term pelvic floor, but do you know what it is and what it does? The pelvic floor is everything inside the bowl of the bony pelvis. It contains the pelvic organs, the pelvic floor muscles and connective tissue, and all the nerves and blood vessels that supply these structures. The pelvic floor muscles have four main functions: they control your bladder and bowel continence, assist in sexual function, stabilize your pelvis, and provide support to the pelvic organs. How prevalent is pelvic floor dysfunction and what are common conditions that people seek treatment for? Some studies have found that more than a third of individuals who identify as a female have pelvic floor dysfunction — so chances are you or someone else you know suffers from this. You may not think you have pelvic floor dysfunction but do any of these scenarios sound familiar? • Do you have to cross your legs when you sneeze or avoid running and jumping activities due to leaking urine? • Do you avoid long car rides or restrict fluid intake in fear of not making the bathroom in time? Or do you urinate frequently (>10x/day or >1x at night)

• Do you have pain with use of tampons or have pain with intercourse? • Do you have pain in your pelvic region — genitals, perineum, rectum or tailbone? • Do you feel like you cannot completely empty your bowels or bladder and have to go back soon after to try again? What does treatment consist of? If you experience any of these symptoms a visit to a qualified pelvic floor therapist is recommended. The evidence for pelvic floor therapy is strong. There have been multiple studies and reviews published that demonstrate grade A evidence for pelvic floor rehab as a first line treatment for most of the aforementioned conditions. Your treatment will be individualized to your specific presentation and goals utilizing a full body approach. Treatment consists of patient education, strategies, and removal of negative barriers to recovery in addition to specific therapies that many include internal release, pelvic repositioning strategies, pelvic floor muscle down training and relaxation, pelvic strengthening exercises, bladder retraining, biofeedback, and core/ hip strengthening. In addition, Paragon Sport Spine & Wellness offers a full host of orthopedic rehabilitation services including physical & occupational therapy, chiropractic, and acupuncture for most all musculoskeletal aches and pains. NJ Heart & Vascular Care Kintu Sanghvi MD’s Message for Mother’s Day The women in our lives are so busy taking care of their husbands, their kids, their parents while still using their skills and intelligence in their career that they often ignore their own health. Women present very differently with cardiovascular conditions in comparison to men. Females with severe heart artery blockage (CAD) do not typically present with the classic angina or chest pain, but present with rather atypical symptoms, particularly with shortness of breath on exertion. First, they commonly ignore these symptoms and then commonly blame it on lack of exercise or weight gain. This leads to missed diagnoses and translates into increased suffering. It was my privilege to take care of one such mom, daughter, and wife: Arlette Brown. Here is her story in her own words: “I was pretty fit till my mid 40s. At that point, work pressures increased, and at the same time as my parents’

health started to decline. And my son was a high level hockey player — I didn’t want to miss anything. An only child, I’m blessed that my husband and son were a huge help and support, but I got the all-hour phone calls when things weren’t going well. My mom had first stent in her early 60s, bypass in mid 60s, congestive heart failure at 70. She passed at 77, in 2018. At that point my 83-year-old dad was worn out from caring for my mom. His physical health wasn’t bad, but he was mentally drained, easily overwhelmed, had early dementia, and took everything out on me. At this point I think I started to get symptoms of high blood pressure that I ignored. He spent most weekends with us till we finally convinced him to move closer to us in an assisted living facility. I was fortunate to be able to work from home during COVID, but this ended up being 10-12 hour days sitting. When I tried to work out, I had no energy. I started to get winded just going up a flight of stairs and by February of this year had a few incidents leaving me completely winded and had what I now realize

At Rothman Orthopaedics, we are exceptionally specialized. We not only specialize in orthopaedics, each of our physicians only focuses on one area of the body. Which means you can have the confidence that you can get past pain and be what you were.

were chest pains. (I’m asthmatic, so having a tight chest wasn’t unusual, but I realized this pain was different) I couldn’t sleep more than two hours without waking to some chest pain. I finally realized something was wrong. I reached out to my primary care doctor and was quickly referred to Dr. Sanghvi. I was evaluated with utmost attention to the details. I was investigated methodically in a stepwise fashion and diagnosed with a severe 90 percent blockage in my proximal left anterior descending artery (also described as the widowmaker). This was successfully opened with a stent, in a minimally invasive procedure going through my wrist artery, and I was discharged home the same day after a few hours. Dr. Sanghvi kept me well informed at each step with extensive details. I felt better immediately and am looking forward to re-focusing on a healthier heart lifestyle. Medical Acucare A Personalized Approach to Your Health By focusing on every dimension of your health and well-being, Medical Acucare aims to alleviate, if not reverse, the symptoms and progression of chronic diseases. Dr. Qingdi Geng, the founder of Medical Acucare, is board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine. She works in the central New Jersey area and draws on over 10 years of clinical experience in treating a variety of medical conditions. Throughout her practice, she discovered that conventional medical treatments are effective in managing most acute conditions — like a broken bone or a stroke — but often fall short in improving chronic diseases. This motivated her to pursue advanced training in Acupuncture and Functional Medicine. Now, she combines the best of conventional medicine, functional medicine, and acupuncture to identify the root causes of her patients’ chronic issues and optimize their health and wellness. Promoting Women’s Health. Dr.

Geng has a deep understanding of the unique challenges that women face as they navigate the healthcare system, especially those who are undergoing perimenopause or menopause as well as other difficult transitions. Knowing the frustration of having your symptoms minimized or simply attributed to aging, Dr. Geng pays particular attention to hormone imbalance, digestive dysfunction, autoimmune issues, and other conditions that often afflict women during these periods. After taking the time to get to know her patients well, she runs comprehensive and tailored lab tests, recommends lifestyle modifications suitable for the individual, and offers personalized treatment plans that help her patients to restore their balance and vitality. Advocating Cardiovascular Health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is well known that high cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes put individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease. However, patients with chronic inflammation are also at much higher risk of heart attack and stroke. Dr. Geng has a wealth of experience treating conditions that can potentially lead to systemic inflamma-

tion including obesity, gut dysbiosis, and various autoimmune diseases. Medical Acucare prioritizes cardiovascular health, working with patients to further assess and lessen their risk through targeted lifestyle modifications and advanced cardiovascular assessments. Tackling Weight Loss. Since many health issues stem from unwanted weight gain, Dr. Geng takes a holistic approach to assisting in weight loss and alleviating metabolic dysfunction. She focuses on helping people to discover the root causes behind their unwanted weight gain, whether it is unhealthy eating habits, hormonal imbalance, chronic inflammation, or insulin resistance. Medical Acucare also maintains collaborative partnerships with local and remote health coaches and nutritionists to help our patients form healthy habits, rebuild their confidence, and sustain their weight loss long-term. Acupuncture. While acupuncture is well known for treating back pain, neck pain, and osteoarthritis, it is also highly effective in reducing the frequency of tension headaches and migraines. Moreover, there is a growing body of evidence that shows acupuncture can trigger the release of beneficial hormones, including

Dr. Qingdi Geng endorphins. For more than five years, Dr. Geng has been using acupuncture to treat neck and back pain, weight loss, indigestion, urinary incontinence, insomnia, and anxiety. Since acupuncture rarely has major side effects, like prescribed medications or surgeries, it is a great option for people who want to take a more natural and less invasive treatment approach. controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform, enabling them to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. It is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand the surgeon’s capabilities and offer a minimally invasive option for major surgery. The surgeon makes small incisions in the patient to introduce miniaturized instruments with wrist-like movements and a high-definition 3D camera. Seated at the da Vinci console, Dr. Perisic views a magnified, highresolution 3D image of the surgical site. At the same time, state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies scale, filter and seamlessly translate Dr. Perisic’s hand movements into precise micro-movements of the wristed instruments. The system cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. All movements are performed by the surgeon at the console. Women who undergo robotic surgery for endometriosis experience less pain and less bleeding and can expect to go home the same day and return to work in one week. BORDENTOWN Home for Funerals

Farmer Jim Kinsel (pictured) and wife Sherry Dudas are reimagining the Honey Brook Organic Farm in Chesterfield as an organic fruit tree orchard. (Facebook photo.) berry often used in jellies and pies, Chinese melon berry–a fruit which resembles a raspberry, honeyberry which is found in Japan (haskap) and Russia (zhimolost), goji berry, jujube, and a berry from Ukraine and other parts of Eastern Europe and Western Asia called the Cornelian Cherry–a variety of dogwood with either yellow or red berries, also used to make jams and pies. “Part of our mission,” Kinsel says, “is to introduce these crops to the public–new varieties which they can grow in their backyard and without pesticides.” Kinsel hopes his fruit groves will be open for pick-your-own opportunities. He also hopes to sell trees at some point. Additionally, Kinsel intends to grow Asian chestnuts and unusual varieties of beans to be dried and sold. But Kinsel hasn’t bailed entirely on traditional crops. Neat rows of apple trees sit across the street from the 1710 farmhouse Kinsel and Dudas live in. Eight acres of asparagus will soon be ready for harvesting. And, there are rows and rows of strawberries which will be available in late May for customer picking. “There is something very primal about strawberry season,” Kinsel tells me. “Everyone loves their farmer at strawberry time; it’s the best time of the year. Strawberries are the first sweet thing to pick!”

Beyond experiments, the planting of new crops, and the sowing of old favorites, Dudas and Kinsel will use the farm for teaching. As part of the SARE grant, Kinsel will instruct fellow farmers about composting methods, something he says traditional farmers are interested in given rising costs of fertilizer. On May 6, the farm will host a stargazing event so people can see the Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower, “one of two meteor showers created by debris from Comet Halley” reads the Facebook announcement which also promises “up to fifty meteors an hour!” Dudas says the stargazing event is the first in her mission to use the farm for ecotourism. She hopes that in light of the fact that a warehouse is being proposed for the Old York Country Club site, people will leave the stargazing event understanding that light pollution often blinds people to the wonders of the sky. She also plans to host an event on Saturday, June 18, the day before Father’s Day, inviting visitors for wagon rides around the farm. Yes, there has always been much more to farming than planting seeds. Even Benjamin Franklin knew that 275 years ago. But perhaps it was Jefferson who summed up what Kinsel and Dudas know in their hearts. “Agriculture ... is our wisest pursuit,” Jefferson wrote, “because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth . . . and happiness.”

STUDIO continued from Page 1 The Ballet Studio holds a recital every year, but this year Zola-De Libero and her staff are especially excited. This years’ recital is in honor of their 50th anniversary. Plans are for it to be held on June 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bordentown Performing Arts Center. In celebration of their 50th, they are bringing back and performing all of their dancer’s favorites dances of the past 49 years. For The Ballet Studio, this is a momentous occasion. “My daughters have danced at The Ballet Studio for the past 14 years. Some of my most treasured memories spent with my daughters were made at TBS,” said Anita Lubrano, mother of dancers Sabrina Lubrano and Julia Lubrano. Lubrano says her daughters have learned lifelong qualities at The Ballet Studio, including dedication, teamwork and self confidence. “From the dance recitals to the dance competitions, the experiences and memories made at TBS will last a lifetime. My daughters have had the greatest and caring dance teachers here that we consider our family,” she said. The Ballet Studio offers a variety of dance classes for its students. Dance styles include ballet, lyrical, pointe, jazz, hiphop, musical theater, and they just started tap a few years ago. They also hold Mommy and Me dance classes, and beginning next fall, Zola-De Libero says the studio will offer nutrition and yoga workshops for people of all ages, from younger children to adults. Zola-De Libero and The Ballet Studio staff are also excited to introduce their Acro dance program, which will be starting in the fall as well. For those who are interested in dancing competitively, the studio holds a competitive dance program. While they may not be a professional school, they have guided a number of dancers who wished to dance professionally to the next level. Zola-De Libero and The Ballet Studio

Hip-hop dancers from The Ballet Studio include (front row) Amberlyn Wilson, Julia Lubrano, Kayla McLaughlin, Alexis Scott, Hailey Muhler and (back row) Heather Jeannette, Emily Joseph, Mia Donnelly, instructor Amanda Ruzich, Samantha DeSantis, Ava Riley and Riley Carr. (Photo by Julia De Libero.) staff have developed what they say is a very strong competition program, where their dancers have won nationals and have placed gold and platinum in regional dance competitions. having other fun summer dance classes. There is no limit to the amount of classes a dancer can take, whether they decide to take one or five a week. The studio offers these classes to people of all ages, from 18 months to people in their teens. For 50 years, The Ballet Studio’s philosophy has been painted on their walls, inspiring their dancers everyday. This philosophy says, “When I dance, I forget everything else, and just feel completely happy.” This motto remains in the mind of not

only the dancers, but also Zola-De Libero and her staff. “We all experience stress and rough days, and we want our dancers when they walk through that door to feel like they are home and safe and loved and appreciated. We want them to come in and feel a part of their family, and we want them to leave feeling happy and feeling joyful,” Zola-De Libero said. The Ballet Studio is not only passionate about dance, but is very big into community and volunteerism. They have helped those at Trenton Cats Rescue, WomanSpace, Merwick Care and Rehabilitation Center and other organizations in need. The Ballet Studio dancers and staff make sure to give back to their community with donating and volunteering for events. Zola’s mother, Beverly Zola, and father, Michael Zola, started the business 50 years ago. Zola’s mother was a professional ballerina and decided to start the business because dance was something she was passionate about. Despite being just nine years old at the time, Zola-De Libero assisted her mother during her classes at The Ballet Studio. Zola’s mother ran the studio for 23 years. After her mother started a new career in gerontological counseling and Zola-De Libero earned her teaching certificate, the timing was right to start running the business. As the golden anniversary approaches, Zola-De Libero thanked all of the parents and families for staying loyal and committed to the studio getting and helping to gett them through the pandemic. “It has been very difficult. It is because of the parents and the dancers who remained loyal to the ballet studio but most of all the true thing that makes our business run the way it does is the staff,” Zola-De Libero said. “We are a family, in fact we are all so close that we all attend and have been each at other weddings and are godparents of some of each other’s children. I love our staff and they are so good at what they do and are We are hiring!

Marino exemplifies team spirit for Scotties’ softball By Rich Fisher In looking at Angelina Marino’s hitting statistics in her two-plus years of varsity softball, it would be hard to imagine the Bordentown High senior ever struggling. Through the Scotties 12-0 start this season, Marino was batting .442, which is actually six points below her career average of .448. As a freshman she went 36-for-79 (.456) and after a Covid shutdown 2020 season, she had one less hit in as many at-bats for a .443 average. As of Apr. 24, the first baseman had 90 career hits, including 20 doubles, 34 RBI and 55 runs scored. Once upon a time, those stats were unimaginable. “When I was younger, I was not a good hitter at all,” Marino said. “I struggled with ground balls, just making outs. It got to me but I realized that life’s too short to think about all those at-bats and I kind of just got over it. I learned that it’s not worth it in the end.” Marino’s woes came when she was in

and it’s a restart.” Marino is one of three captains on the team; and leads more by example than talking. She wants to lead the way she liked to be led, with younger players feeling comfortable to approach her. “She’ll take a teammate and help them, lead them in the right direction; be someone they can confide in and talk with,” coach Nicole O’Reilly said. “She’s more of the silent leader but just the presence of her; and the support she shows to her teammates is what makes her leadership role so powerful.” She also reacts well to all kinds of pitching through hard work and dedication. Batting in the leadoff spot, Marino makes a pitcher work from the very first pitch. “She’s one of those batters that just sees the ball and puts it in play.” O’Reilly said. “It’s never gonna be in the same place twice. She’s always making good, solid contact.” How does she do it? “She has the ability to see the ball,” O’Reilly continued. “She’s not afraid to

(Photo by Rich Fisher.) fight off close corner pitches and hit those foul balls and wait for that pitch that is more on the plate where she can make that solid contact.” After struggling through her early years, Marino takes nothing for granted and remains modest about her success. “Just making contact is my main goal. I don’t need to hit a home run,” she said. “I don’t need to hit it anywhere specific, as long as I can get on base for the team, that’s the best thing I can do.” Just luck? Come now. What’s the secret? “I don’t really have a secret,” Marino said with a laugh. “It kind of comes with practice. Determination and perseverance kind of helped me through it all. I go up there thinking it’s just a game at the end of the day, so no pressure.” When Marino arrived as a freshman, O’Reilly wasn’t sure what to expect,. She proved to be a pleasant surprise with her consistency, and has been in the leadoff spot ever since. “She definitely sets the tone for her teammates to know ‘Hey I’m gonna get my job done and get on base and everyone’s gonna follow my lead and make something happen because we’re getting this first batter on base,’” O’Reilly said. “Especially when it’s happening in the

first inning when it’s so crucial to set the tone of the game.” Defensively, Marino has moved from outfield to first base and has adapted nicely. It’s where she will play for Moravian University next year. “I loved the campus, I loved the mentality of the school,” she said. “Kean was close by, my sister goes there. I felt it would be more of a comfort thing if I went there, though. I just wanted to go off. It would be nice to play with her again, but I needed my own path.” That path will have her majoring in occupational therapy, which she gained an interest in when her grandmother had therapists working on her. Marino’s high school path includes a 4.0 grade point average and taking part in student council, HOSA and the Sustainability Club at Bordentown. She also embroiders, admitting that “ I kind of pick up the weird things that teenagers don’t do these days.” “I’m actually making a pillow for school with my logo for softball,” she said. “I like that different side of things where it’s not sports or athletics or going to the gym. You just sit down, watch Netflix and enjoy the moment.” She seems to have adopted the same attitude for playing softball, and what a difference it has made.

On Jan. 1, 1859, an entrepreneurial young man by the name of Samuel Engle Burr (1836 -1917) christened the frigid New Year’s morning by tossing firewood into the pot-bellied stove that graced the center of his rambling three-story general store. Grasping an iron poker with one hand, he gingerly rubbed the frost from the window of the doorway with his other sleeve, gazing at Bordentown’s snow-covered Main Street (Farnsworth Avenue) with anticipation for his first customer to arrive. Two months earlier he married his girlfriend, Sally Richardson (1834-1894), and now he was about to embark on his first day as a business owner.

“Burr’s Corner.” It was a fortunate coincidence that Samuel bought the old store when it was available. Working as a salesclerk under his stepbrother, Alfred, who was a shopkeeper in Moorestown, he was anxious to start a business of his own. It was also here where he met his future bride, Sally. The towns of Burlington, Medford, Mount Holly, and his hometown of Jacksonville were considered ideal choices, but Bordentown flourished as a major transportation center that experienced industrial and commercial growth due in part to the railroad and the canal. Any prospective merchant knew that store goods could be transported to and from the regional Philadelphia and New York markets, therefore extending their trading territory. In this gradual progression of life, Samuel’s store became a fundamental

Burr’s store became the focal point for citizens, where they could go to interact and discuss the business matters of the day. This was his first day of many to come that would greet customers with lively conversation and advice, thus becoming an essential fixture in town. As the wood from the stove popped, releasing glowing streams of embers against the metal casting like a posse of fireflies, Samuel’s mind drifted from the warmth of the room. Reflecting on what life must have been like a century earlier when the old store was owned by the prominent son of the town’s namesake, Joseph Borden, for a brief second he thought that he captured the subtle scent of gunpowder instead of smoke. This wasn’t a figment of his imagination. since the large room once housed the gun shop of Robert Jackaway, a master gunsmith known for fashioning firing pins to the wooden barrels that were launched against British ships as they occupied Philadelphia in 1778. This effort inspired Francis Hopkinson, Borden’s son-in-law, to compose his famous satirical song, The Battle of the Kegs. Now it was Samuel’s turn to manage the future of the store. Although its location on Main and Crosswicks Streets was always referred by residents as “Borden’s Corner,” Samuel’s easy manner and reputation would eventually justify its new name as

component of daily communication. It was the focal point for citizens to interact and discuss the business matters of the day. The site was so important that some of the functions normally performed by the post office were actually handled at the store. Communication efforts further advanced when the store became one of the earliest businesses in New Jersey to receive telephone service. Knowing the potential marketing aspects in the telephone, Samuel wrote letters to agencies that could help in this quest. His perseverance paid off. In 1882, a 50-line magneto switchboard was installed near the corner window of Samuel’s office by the Delaware and Atlantic Telephone and Telegraph Company. As telephone subscribers increased, it brought more business for the store. Soon Samuel became quite overwhelmed as a telephone agent that he had to hire a switchboard clerk. Within a short amount of time, the front section of the store’s vacant second floor was operated by the telephone company and a separate stairway was installed. Samuel’s dedication to see Bordentown grow and prosper not only pertained to the telephone company but with the construction of a new city hall as well. He was a mover and a shaker

in the business community and felt that Bordentown’s presence as a developing city should be reflected in the opulence of a new building. And so he began a stringent campaign to engage with his customers on why and where a new city hall should be constructed. City officials eventually agreed with most of his view points and in 1888, a new city hall complex with a Seth Thomas clock was erected. The old town hall, in the center of Walnut Street, became a furniture repair shop. Samuel’s first day of business was so brisk with customers that he immediately decided to hire a man and a woman for salesclerk positions. The man was responsible for selling the groceries and hardware while the woman took care of the dry goods and notions. As the need arose, additional sales clerks were hired. On occasion, Sally would assist. The store was open daily from 8 AM until 7 PM. Although the hours were long, the work was extremely productive.

Every morning, farmers from surrounding farms delivered vegetables, meats, cheese, butter, flour, and other food products to Samuel Burr’s store by horse and wagon. Behind the meat counter stood a large icebox for storing meat while supplies of coffee, tea, spices, and sugar were stored below the coffee grinder at other end of the counter. At the far end of the store, shelves and tables were stocked with an assortment of dress materials, lace, ribbons, Muslin, dry goods, and notions. The middle aisles contained a variety of hardware tools and kitchen utensils. The room was fifty feet square and divided into two sections. The second level had three bedrooms and a stockroom in addition to the telephone company. Samuel’s residence was on the first floor of the building and divided by a brick wall. There were two bedrooms, a dining room, and a sewing room. Despite the building’s odd configuration, the residence was spacious and personal. It was filled with joy after Sally gave birth

He strained to stock the store shelves as he reached his twilight years. He still enjoyed tending to the pot-bellied stove on cold winter mornings. During the Civil War, economic shockwaves resonated through the country as most goods and commodities increased their market values to nearly 100 percent. As this frightening trend developed, Samuel thought of the welfare of his family and invested all of his money into large stocks. In the wake of the war’s aftermath, he made a profitable return more so in thirty six months than he would have in thirty six years. This afforded him the opportunity to pay his creditors in full for purchasing the store. Furthermore, he sought expert advice on how to diversify his profits so they wouldn’t be lost if the burdens of war led to a major economic collapse. Although a devout Quaker in the firm belief that human slavery was immoral, Samuel condemned armed conflict as nothing more than a legalized form of mass murder in which he refused to participate. And so he never served in the Union Army. However, he did express empathy for a distant cousin, Varina Howell Davis (1826-1906), who served as First Lady of the Confederacy and the second wife of the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. Varina’s grandmother, Keziah Burr (1758-1835), was born and raised in Burlington County.

to their son Charles in 1868 and sorrow after she died 26 years later following a brief illness. Almost 36 years to the day when he opened his store, Samuel married a lovely young woman by the name of Lizzie Thompson (1858-1941). Later that year, she gave birth to their daughter, Sarah Jane, followed by the birth of their son, Samuel, Jr. in 1897. Charles became a fire chief and fire insurance agent for Bordentown, helping his father operate the store when he was available. The years seemed to come and go at a vigorous rate. Samuel, on the other hand, strained and lagged in stocking the store shelves with his wrinkled frame as he reached his twilight years. Despite age, he still enjoyed tending to the pot-bellied stove on cold winter mornings. He couldn’t resist waiting for the next customer to arrive. When Samuel Burr passed away in 1917, he left a large void in the local community. Although he was deeply missed, the small town spirit of Burr’s Corner remained the same. Today, the small town spirit of Bordentown continues to thrive as well. Doug Kiovsky is the vice president of the Bordentown Historical Society.
