A Jersey Girl goes to Italy Ewing resident Midge Guerrera writes about her adventures in Italy in new book By DAN AUBrey

Ewing and Pontelanolfo, Italy, resident Midge Guerrera has recently published a book, Cars, Castles, Cows, and Chaos. The book, published by Trenton publisher Read Furiously, chronicles Guerrera’s transition from native Jersey Girl to very rural Italian.

In the following selection from the book, the actor, playwright, producer and former director of the New Jersey School for the Arts gives readers a quick tour of her half-time world as well as a taste of her book: When you live in a part of Italy that has a bella vista at every turn in the road, any excuse for a drive on a beautiful day is a good excuse. I think my excuse on this particular day was I didn’t want to hang up the laundry. My adventuresome niece, Alex, was visiting us. It is even more fun to hop in the car and explore new places when you have great com-

pany—or in this case, a “you can do it” cheerleader. The sun was shining, the clouds were floating over the rolling hilltops and there was gas in our newold Fiat, Silva. This crisp clear wonderful day also happened to be the second Sunday in September, the one day a year they hold a mass in Santa Maria degli Angeli, an ancient stone mini chapel in Pontelandolfo’s mountains. We were in the car, deciding if we should take a left or a right out of the driveway, looked at each other and both said, “The church See BOOK, Page 4

It’s more than two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and communities continue to move towards a return to normalcy. For Ewing Township, that means the reestablishment of community programs and capital improvements. Ewing Observer editor Bill Sanservino recently spoke with Mayor Bert Steinmann about a number of issues facing the township.

In question and answer articles published by the Observer over the past few months, Steinmann talked about township revenues and expenditures, development, the Ewing Town Center, and retail cannabis shops in town. He also talked about the effects of the pandemic on the commercial real estate market and its impact on the township’s tax base, revenues and property valuations. Those articles can be read on the

Observer’s website at communitynews.org. In this month’s article, the last in the series, Steinmann answers questions about the state of the township’s recreational sports programs, Trenton Water Works and road improvements. An edited version of the interview runs in the Q&A below. *** Ewing Observer: Can you tell See STEINMANN, Page 6

like that tornado, whirl up the mountain, twisting and turning, scare the hell out of me. When Jack drives, I clutch the old lady hand-grabber, scream, moan and refuse to look at the beautiful valley hundreds of feet below that is calling me to a sure death entombed in a twisted heap of metal. The views are incredible! So, I’m told. Was I going to admit my phobia to a young niece who has toured the world alone, decided to go to university in a foreign country and has been fearless since birth? Not on your life! All my years of working in theatre have paid off. I can put on a very brave front. Alex and I got directions to the church from my pal Nicola and started driving up a mountain. I prayed Silva would make it up the hills. Gulp, I wasn’t kidding about the whirling and twirling narrow roads. Shit, I had to keep smiling while what seemed like a donkey path was taking us up higher and higher. I couldn’t even take my eyes off the road to look at the fluttering silver green leaves of the olive trees that covered the hillside. We followed the directions—I swear we did—but somehow were climbing closer to our celestial forbearers than I was super comfortable with. Little Silva started coughing. (No, please don’t stall out.) I drove up in a straining first gear. Alex was the force that kept me going. Wend-

ing my way up and up to certain death by careening around a curve and off a cliff, I was scared shitless. Alex kept saying “I feel it—we are almost there—this is right.” We kept peering left—Nicola said we couldn’t miss it—on the left just past the old fountain. Which old fahkackata fountain? We passed a ton of old fountains. Fountains that were divided into basins so you could do laundry. Fountains that were pipes coming out of rock. Fountains festooned with “Don’t Drink This Water” signs. “Stop the car. Stop the car!” Alex shouted. “I see horses. Maybe some people role-play contadini and ride their horses up here.” What a great and charming idea! Then I noticed that further up there was a line of parked cars. We must be here! Remembering that Nicola said to flip the car around and park pointed down the hill, I held my breath, closed my eyes and managed to turn around without pummeling us down the cliff. It was a veritable cliff—road, no ditch, six inches of grass and drop to your death. I thanked Silva for being the wee car that it was. We walked up the mountain closer to the horses. Lots of people were gathering around and heading up towards a tent. “Auntie M, you said it was a cute church,”

said Alex, “this looks like a revival tent.” Maybe they put a tent up for overflow?” Then we saw the cows—lots of cows. Big giant white cows festooned with bells were mooing and eating. Suddenly it hit us—it was a pagan cow worshipping ritual, or a country cow show and sale. Actually, it was more like a cow beauty pageant complete with an old Bob Barker Miss America MC type announcing the qualities of the candidates. The set up reminded us of a horse show. The show ring was near an announcer’s platform. There were ribbons and trophies everywhere. These giant white cows, that graze in the mountains, were brushed and dressed for success. The owners, or trainers, moved them along like champions. Sadly, we were so enamored with our find that I didn’t pull out my handy pad and take important notes—like who sponsored it and where the hell we were. Alex scrambled up and sat on a fence to get closer to the action. I wandered around to feel the sense of community. This whirling road may just have landed us where that lonely shepherd had started his airborne journey. We were definitely in a grazing country. STEINMANN continued from Page 1 me about some of the things going on in town this year that might be of interest to residents? Bert Steinmann: We are going to have a fireworks display on July 1 on Green Lane at the College of New Jersey. We’re trying to get back to normal as best as we possibly can. We’re going to hold Community Fest on Sept. 24 this year (See ad on Page 3 for more information). We’re starting to open up the town, especially the community centers, a little bit more. We are trying to relieve some of the restrictions that we have there. Hopefully we can get back to normal and, knock on wood, we don’t have the COVID situation come back again, although I don’t have a lot of faith in it, but we’ll see how that works out. EO: Well, hopefully we are reaching the endemic phase of this thing. BS: You know, it’s interesting when you look at the numbers. Almost 100% of our seniors got all the shots. The group that was the challenge was 19 to 24 consistently. But the ones who are 19 to 24 who are here for seven or eight months a year (to go to college), if they get the shots or they get COVID, it’s their home town that gets notified, not us. But we got aggressive with clinics. We’re working with The College of New Jersey,

with Mercer County and Penn Medicine. We had the child’s clinic last night, with parents bringing the kids. That’s kind of an ongoing thing. We actually ordered vaccines for five and under. So we’re going to offer that also. The nurses in our health department are doing a bang-up job. They put in a lot of hours and reaching out to lot of people. Anyone who’s experienced COVID appreciates the people that are there help them out. Our reverse call notification system (Swift911 Community Notification System) has been helpful in informing residents. I actually put an ad in the newspaper to get more people to participate. I encourage people to sign up for that, because we do put out a lot of information over the phone. Any time I talk to people, they love it. EO: How does somebody sign up for it? BS: They can go to our website (ewingnj. org/swift911). It has on there exactly what you have to do to sign up. Or you can call the township (609-883-2900), and we’ll register you right away for that. I think over the years we’ve gotten a little bit more refined with the system. When we first started out, I think we called every phone line that New Jersey Manufacturer had and the state police. Eventually we were able to isolate it to like one or two

phones. We try to do our best. Residents can get a lot of information through the program and they get it almost immediately. EO: Yeah, I’ve never heard anybody say a bad thing about that program. BS: Sometimes people will say, “You’re doing this thing and you didn’t call us,” or “I don’t want to know about sports and recreation. I just want to know about emergencies,” But we can’t separate that out. But for the most part they like the phone calls. As far as our recreational programs, they are starting to come back. They were really lagging with the number of kids. I still don’t think the numbers are great. They have increased a little bit. People are still a little bit of afraid of COVID. Kids used to do a lot of outdoor recreational things, whether it was soccer or football. Now they’re playing games on the computer. So that that has shifted. Personally, I think it’s better for young women and young men to be out there in a setting amongst his or her peers and playing some sort of sport or something that’s more recreational than sitting on a computer. But that’s just my old-fashioned way of thinking. EO: Are you going to have the Moody Park Basketball League this year? BS: Yes. We had it last year. We met with Ted Forst (the township director of community affairs) recently because we are

doing the full summer camp program this year, and basketball was probably the one summer thing that everyone kept coming out for. They were outdoors, so they won’t worry about catching anything. EO: And at that point last summer the numbers were really going down because due to vaccinations. It was before the Delta and Omicron variants and break-through infections. BS: Exactly. So that program was good. Baseball has suffered a little bit. I don’t think it’s directly related to COVID. It’s just that over a period of time those numbers have dwindled anyway. It’s the same thing with the soccer program. West End Soccer, at one point, when I was president there, we had thousands of kids playing basically at every age level. When I left it started to wane and it got down to like, I don’t know, 100 or 110 kids. They couldn’t support a lot of teams, so that the innovation was that we played shortsighted and things like that. And so that worked. Then they merged with the girls’ association. Their numbers are up a little bit and they have a very decent program, but the numbers aren’t back to where the numbers were before. I don’t know if that that will change. I hope it will. Not that I don’t like baseball or the other sports, but I love soccer. So, I

EO: I know Trenton Water Works has said that they’re installing a bunch of lines in Ewing Township this year. How does that impact the township’s road improvement plan? BS: We’ve got a number of road improvements that we’re going to make this year. We’ve got one area of town where there’s going to be about 8 or 10 streets that are going to be completely repaved. The main reason is because there was a lot of work that was being done there. For example, gas lines were replaced and water lines were replaced. Although the minimum requirement is that they patch and fix, it’s never good. When a utility company comes in and digs up a road to make an installation, depending how far it is, you either have to See STEINMANN, Page 8

money for free--whether it’s the federal government or from the state government or the county--to offset costs. But there’s so many programs and so many things that people want, but then they don’t realize what it takes to get to that point. And that’s frustrating. Trust me, when people call us, we try every possible way to try to satisfy that situation, and sometimes we have to say, “No, it’s not going to work, I’m sorry.”

hope that that comes back. Our football program is doing well. Although there’s a number of kids that have dropped off, but it’s still pretty good. They have pretty good numbers. We try to accommodate all those groups with the facilities that we have. We certainly try to keep it up. I mean, there’s some maintenance that we have to do to our buildings, but again, we’ll do that during the course of the year. Overall, I think recreation-wise and otherwise, that we’re doing fairly well. Can things be better? Absolutely everything can be better, but it’s certainly not for lack of trying on our part. And we have a receptive ear for ideas that we can try to implement. I think for some people, they come up with ideas, and they think that that’s like some kind of easy fix. And when you talk about it, it is an easy fix. But to get to that fix, there are a lot of steps that you have to take. That’s the thing that people really don’t understand. How you arrive at something. What you have got to do to get there and what the cost is to get there. Because they’re always talking about, “Well you’re raising my taxes and you’re not doing anything for me.” But that’s not true. We try to implement whatever we possibly can. STEINMANN continued from Page 7 repave half the road or the whole road. Usually, it’s at least half of the road that they have to repave. When that happens, we’re going to talk to the utility about paving the whole road, and we’ll pick up the cost for the other half. We tried the half road stuff, and it’s great, but then with the other half we get complaints. People ask, “Well you paid for their side of the street, why aren’t you paying for our side of the street?” EO: Will you have an opportunity to work Trenton Water Works on the roads where they are doing water line replacements? BS: Well, the roads that that we put on last year’s capital improvement program are where Trenton Water Works went first and did the water lines. Whatever we might put in this year’s plan probably won’t get done until next year. Some of the roads we’re looking at are long roads, and we’re looking at the price of black top. If Trenton Water’s contractor can do their half and we do half, it’s a good deal of money. We had good deals with PSE&G when they dug up the roads for gas lines. They did one whole neighborhood curb to curb. I’ve been disappointed with--not Trenton Water Works per se, although that’s frustrating at best—but some of the contractors that they hired have been less than helpful. EO: I know there’s been difficulty with getting some of the council members in Trenton to approve capital improvements or spend money on the towns outside of Trenton when it comes to water infrastructure improvements. (Trenton Water Works is owned and run by the City of Trenton). How is Ewing’s relationship going with them? Are you happy with what they’re doing?

BS: Well, I wasn’t happy with what they were doing at the time, and I’m still disappointed in a lot of things, but after arguing back and forth for months, they’re going to start replacing the whole water line on Olden Avenue. Over a period of about a year and a half, we had six major breaks in that line. It disrupted the traffic flow on Olden Avenue. Some of it was maybe just a couple of hours and some of it was days. I did talk with the mayor (Reed Gusciora), who really helped. He was going to float a $4 million bond to replace that line from Parkway Avenue all the way to Princeton Avenue. The Trenton Council voted it down. Then I got our township attorney, Maeve Cannon, to tell them that I’m suing them. It was ridiculous. So anyway, then they came up with the money. They put money aside that the federal government gave them--$4 million from that money. I don’t care where the money comes from, I just want that water line replaced. They’re supposed to be starting that hopefully later on in this spring or early summer. It’s about a good mile-and-a-half to two miles. EO: Yeah. I know that was a problem, particularly along that stretch. BS: Meanwhile, they have been upgrading the system over time. But again, you just basically have to threaten them to get anything done. That’s because a lot of things have to go from Trenton Water to Trenton City Council to get approved, and that’s where the challenge is. Some of the members of Trenton City Council don’t trust the Trenton Water folks to tell them the financial facts, so there’s that debate there. With the federal money we’re able to get something done. In the meantime, our fire hydrants are being tracked by our volunteer and career firefighters. If there are issues, then they get on Trenton Water. They have a great chief engineer that responds to us. I won’t say his name, but he’s a really good guy. So, it’s not the best situation with them, but the situation has improved. EO: Especially within Water Works itself, right? BS: Yes, we’re not getting as many water quality notices. EO: What about other road work? What’s the status of the Sylvia Street extension? BS: The whole new road and the roundabout from the tracks on down is done, and then the rest going to the bottom of the hill is going to be repaved and striped. That’s being paid for with a state grant. EO: That’s going to happen this year? BS: That’s this year. The money has been approved it will be done in the spring.

Take a walk on the wild side BY REBEKAH SCHROEDER As July’s celebrations of freedom and fireworks signal the height of summer is here, there are other casual, easygoing options with just as many breathtaking sights to behold, but more nature than the average barbecue. Take a stroll, hike or bike at these sites for a fresh breath of air — and ample opportunities to socialize under the sun.

Park and meet at the lot by the Mercer Meadows Dog Park and Rosedale Lake area Mercer Meadows is expansive, home to 1,600 acres and three county properties — the Pole Farm, Rosedale Lake, and Curlis Lake Woods — with a wealth of wildlife, woods, and gentle winds weaving through the area. The trails are home to history as well, especially in the case of the Pole Farm, a site formerly owned by AT&T.

The Lawrence Hopewell Trail traverses two townships and covers more than 20 miles. While pedestrians and cyclists are free to navigate the area during the day, the latter can show up for an event of the celestial kind on Saturday, July 9, for a nighttime, six-mile route guided by the glow of the full moon. The 2022 Full Moon Bike Ride takes advantage of this natural illumination, creating what organizers describe on their website as an “out of this world experience” for riders. When the moon rises around 8:30 p.m., those 12 and older will embark on a brightly decorated route that takes about 45 minutes, all while classical musicians provide accompaniment along the route. Registration is required for all attendees regardless of participation in the ride itself. Onsite registration is available, but LHT recommends signing up in advance online via Eventbrite at eventbrite.com/e/ lawrence-hopewell-trail-full-moon-bike-rideregistration-367474635527. Group rates vary by age and the number of people registered, with prices available on the event page at lhtrail.org/annual-fullmoonride. To register a group, email LHT

Watson Woods - Abbott Bluff Trail, John A. Roebling Memorial Park, Hamilton. Saturday, July 2, 10 a.m. to noon. Free. Park and meet at the Tulpehaking Nature Center 157 Westcott Avenue, Hamilton. The Abbott Marshlands are named after Trenton-born archaeologist and naturalist Charles Conrad Abbott, who documented his experiences living near the marshlands and discovering artifacts. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the more than 3,000 acres of wetlands and bluffs run “adjacent to the Delaware River between Trenton and Bordentown,” according to their website.

at info@lhtrail.org. Children under 12 are not permitted to participate in the ride for safety reasons, but are allowed to attend “accompanied and supervised by an adult.” Non-riders do not have to pay a fee, but donations are requested, as the nonprofit that creates, manages and maintains the trail, the Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corporation, is organizing the event. All guests must still sign a waiver. LHT requests that all riders wear helmets and have working front lights on their bikes. Decorating the bikes with extras, such as the free glowsticks provided, is highly encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to winners in youth and adult categories for their creativity. There will be restrooms available, as well as “a few vendors selling snacks and drinks,” but LHT advocates for bringing along snacks and/or having a moonlit picnic dinner beforehand. No alcohol is permitted, there are no current COVID-19 protocols in place, and the rain date is the following day on Sunday, July 10. Additionally, LHT’s Saturday Morning Walking Club typically hosts a free monthly event exploring the area. However, because of the Full Moon Bike Ride in July, the Saturday Morning Walks will resume on August 13. The location of the August event is, as of press time, to be determined. Visit LHT’s Saturday Morning Walking Club’s page at lhtrail.org/walkingclub.

NATURE, continued from Page 3 The site is the ancestral homeland of the Lenape, and their presence, as well as Abbott’s similar embrace of nature, are both recognized for their importance. Named “Land of the Turtle” to honor the animal’s symbolic relationship with the native Lenape, the Tulpehaking Nature Center facility offers a host of educational opportunities for visitors. It’s also a fitting place to start walking from to engage in the different activities that the Abbott Marshlands has scheduled for July. On the first Saturday of every month, the Friends for the Abbott Marshlands, the nonprofit that uplifts the area through programming and protective measures, hosts wellness walks on different trails. This month’s walk, co-sponsored by the RWJ Fitness and Wellness Center, invites attendees able to bask in an “early summer walk” among others. The group will go on the Abbott Bluff Trail through Watson Woods, a path that requires a climb to the top of the bluff, then a descent to a depression in the ground where Abbott’s home was destroyed in a 1914 fire, according to the Marshlands’ website. Registration is required and available online, along with more information, via Eventbrite at eventbrite.com/e/first-sat-

urday-wellness-walk-watson-woods-abbottbluff-trail-tickets-322897072837. There are also the “Wednesday Watson Woods Walks,” which recur each week on the following dates: July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27. Another free opportunity to walk among friends and nature, these group events run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Abbott Marshlands invites attendees to “observe the seasons change while exploring the beautiful trails” of the John A. Roebling Memorial Park.

Nature Therapy Walk: A Shinrin-yoku Experience with Sharon Lohse Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Friday, July 8, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $35 admission ($28 with member discount). Stewardship is a core mission of Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, where habitats like meadows, woods, and ponds have been flourishing since the 1930s. BHWP claims to be “the nation’s one-andonly living museum specifically devoted to native plants,” making for a tranquil trip to see what’s in bloom this July —butterfly weed, false sunflowers and sweet pepperbush, to name a few — surrounded by a 100-acre deer exclosure to keep the species

intact. Since retiring from her position as a psychiatric nurse, Sharon Lohse has continued to develop unique specializations that unify her lifelong passion for nature and the endless desire to help others. With certifications in forest and horticultural therapy, she is a garden trail guide whose background, as well as later pursuits of science at Delaware Valley University, influenced the core elements of this upcoming BHWP event. According to a 2019 National Geographic article, Shinrin-yoku is a Japanese term that translates to “forest bathing,” a form of ecotherapy focused on atmospheric immersion and its corresponding health benefits. This idea of mediating outdoors has inspired Lohse’s nature therapy walk, as the BHWP page continues, where attendees “will explore the land of the preserve and awaken [their] senses to its sounds, beings, textures and beauty.” These gentle strides, at a considerably slower rate, are meant to truly absorb the perks of reflection, whether against a sunlit pond or looking inwards. The “emphasis is on unplugging,” BHWP says, to eliminate stress and increase prosperity. Registration is required before July 6 online at the BHWP website, bhwp.org/ item/nature-therapy-walk-a-shinrin-yokuexperience-july/#tab-wccpf_fields_tab.

TravelStorys Mobile Tours

Available from the D&R Greenway Land Trust for Cedar Ridge Preserve, Healing Trails, Abbott Marshlands, and St. Michaels Farm Preserve. Since their inception in 1989, D&R Greenway Land Trust has preserved more than 20,000 acres of land in New Jersey. This has allowed nature, conservation efforts, and green open spaces to flourish — despite time and time again being named the most densely populated state in the entire country. While D&R has no events planned at the moment, anyone can go alone or with company on their TravelStorys mobile tours, which use a free application and GPS to access audio guides. There are four D&R sites currently adopting the TravelStorys platform as a location-based podcast to share local stories and history lessons. Listeners can appreciate the paths at their own pace, enjoying time on protected properties by following along to the prerecorded voices. After downloading the guide, the application functions “more like a compass” and works offline, meaning that the insight travels with the user as it recognizes each location in the tour. Cedar Ridge Preserve’s “Women in Conservation” tour is an acknowledgement of 16 women whose contributions in areas such as science and environmental protec-

tion have shaped the world. The idea to feature these females came from a young girl herself, Princeton resident Madeleine Freundlich, as part of a Girl Scout project. International figures like climate change activist Greta Thunburg are included, as well as local leaders including Beverly Mills and Elaine Buck, the founders of the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum who worked to preserve not only the physical area, but the personal accounts and cultural significance of Black history in the Sourlands. The Healing Trails are a tour through Princeton’s Greenway Meadows, divided by three colors of varying accessibilities and difficulties, that are meant to help with personal health. Being surrounded by nature physically and emotionally benefits people of all ages, soothing ailments, issues, as well as a myriad of conditions that were dealt with right on that same trail. D&R’s website says that the tour, inspired by the Healing Trails art exhibition in their Johnson Education Center venue, revolves around the “stories of people healing from surgery, illness or trauma by walking on [their] preserved lands.” Trails marked as green are handicap accessible and paved, yellow are “relatively flat” and unpaved, while red trails are “more challenging” and uphill. D&R hopes that those soaking up the restorative qual-

ity of lush greens and a warm sun will “find peace and perspective” as they progress. The Healing Trails were created in memory of Edie Howard. St. Michaels Farm Preserve’s mobile tour is through an abundance of open space at the edge of Hopewell Borough, where an old orphanage and farm stood before the land was purchased for preservation in 2010. The trail invites young audiences to learn about nature, the website continues, through exploration and expression. By giving them the tools to find a “home in nature,” the audio informs children about how outdoor experiences can create special connections to the world. The trail is a tribute to this, and now encompasses a memorial area called “Jackson’s Place,” established on Earth Day last year to remember Jackson McGrath Place, a young man whose ve for the environment will positively inspire visitors for years to come. More information about all the tours is online at drgreenway.org/travelstorys. This July, let nature help pack on the psychological and physiological sunscreen in between layers of actual skin protection, because while beautiful beaches have an impact on wellbeing, trails and parks provide wonderful, oft-forgotten boosts of their own.

Blend Bar & Bistro’s Central Jersey Beer Fest Returns Blend Bar and Bistro opened its doors in Hamilton in October of 2012 and created an anniversary event that has grown into a tasting extravaganza, the Central Jersey Beer Fest. 2022 marks Blend’s 10-year anniversary, and Blend will be hosting smaller events at their restaurant location practically weekly all summer leading up to Saturday, October 8, Central Jersey Beer Fest at Mercer County Park Festival Grounds in West Windsor. Antonio Carannante, festival coordinator and co-owner of Blend Bar and Bistro in Hamilton, is justifiably pumped. In the past #CJBeerFest featured a tasting of more than 150 craft beers, some wines, even a few spirits, up to 10 food trucks, live bands, and a variety of other vendors, including axe throwing. The festival has attracted an average of 3,000+ festival lovers. Folks come for all over the Mercer County area, but even groups of family and friends from Philadelphia, Rhode Island, Connecticut, the Carolinas, California, New York, and more have made the trip to the Central Jersey Beer Fest. “As with past events, we will have a strong focus on education and safety all throughout the festival grounds. Our motto is ‘Drink Responsibly and have Fun.’” Carannante notes that you must be 21+ to enter. “We always recommend inviting a designated driver, getting a ride, and using

ride share options.” Tip: schedule a ride a head of time. The event will provide patrons with an unparalleled chance to sample craft beers from a wide variety of brewers. Even if you “think” you don’t like beer, it’s great chance to have a small sampling of so many new styles with different flavor profiles including some cocktails in a can, ciders, and seltzers. The beer tasting is allowed for four solid hours during the festival, but there is so much more to the event, including creative food vendors, great live music, and backyard

vertigo, headaches, and pelvic floor dysfunction. “Stand-alone treatments such as chiropractic tend to mainly focus on manipulation and maybe some modalities for pain relief, which often times tends to be temporary. At Paragon, we combine it with soft tissue therapies, eastern and western acupuncture techniques, and targeted exercises such as mobility, stabilization and repositioning drills with physical & occupational therapy. This addresses the source of why a particular region was overstressed and eventually injured. Ultimately with this combination of different treatments we can treat the problem without it developing into a chronic condition,” explains Harrison Ranallo, chiropractor and director of rehabilitation. “The benefit with integrated care also extends to better communication and brainstorming with its providers on unified treatment plans,” explains physical therapist Jim Tholany. “Here

the patient’s goal is the ultimate target destination, and it’s our job to devise a treatment plan and path to get them there. We want patients to know they have conservative and effective treatments offering lasting relief that likely do not have to involve masking

the problem with prescription and over-the-counter medications, steroid injections, and even surgery some times.” For more information and to learn please visit paragonssw.com or call 609-686-2050. See ad, page 12.

meet the Hamilton township division of Health! A Trusted Resource for Improved Health & Well Being The mission of the Division of Health is to serve as a trusted resource for Hamilton Township to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents through health education and promotion, enforcement of public health safety, and adapting to ever-changing community health needs. Some of our services include public immunization clinics, child health clinics, STI testing, vital statistics (marriage certificates and licenses, birth certificates, and death certificates), retail food establishment inspections, and other environmental health services! Our Animal Shelter is also part of the Division of Health and provides animal control services, pet adoptions, and dog licensing. Hamilton residents please call 609890-3828 or visit our website at

www.hamiltonnj.com/health for more information. Many of our services are by appointment. Here are some quick safety tips to help you have a safe and healthy summer: • Check for ticks! Ticks are the most active in the warmer months (April-September). Infected ticks can transmit diseases including Lyme disease. Prevent tick bites by wearing insect repellent, check yourself, kids and pets for ticks, remove ticks quickly, and seek medical help if you develop symptoms of Lyme disease (including fever, headache, fatigue and rash). • Beat the heat this summer! Extreme heat can lead to heat related illness. People ages 65+, children under two, and people with chronic diseases and mental illness are at highest risk. Remember to keep your cool! Stay in air conditioning as much as possible, stay hydrated, check on neighbors or family who are high risk, wear loose and lightweight clothing, and NEVER leave children or pets in cars. • Sun Safety! Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Protect

yourself and others from the sun when outdoors by seeking shade, and wearing sunglasses, hats, and clothing to protect you from the sun. Don’t forget your sunscreen! Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher, reapply often, and check those expiration dates! • Eat your fruits and veggies! Healthy eating can help adults and children live a healthy life and reduce the risks of chronic disease. Summer is a great time for fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables including strawberries, watermelon, zucchini,

and fresh Jersey tomatoes! • Water safety! Swimming is a fun summer activity to help cool off, but should be done safely. If you go swimming this summer remember to learn to swim and know your limits, never leave children unattended, wear life jackets when doing water activities, don’t swim alone even if you are a strong swimmer, and never dive into shallow water — if you don’t know how deep it is, don’t dive! For more information on these topics and other summer safety tips visit www.cdc.gov. See ad, page 10.

Hamilton Dental Associates The Importance of Orthodontic Care for Your Children Growing up makes for a constantly evolving experience for children. Every year they change and grow into the person they are destined to become, and that extends to their oral health. From the first baby tooth to their adult teeth coming in later in their lives, managing your child’s dental health presents unique challenges for parents. With those challenges come a few myths involving childhood tooth development that can impact how you treat your child’s dental health. Combating Childhood Oral Health Myths. When you start looking for a pediatric dentist in Hamilton, you want to find one that knows how intensive taking care of your child’s teeth should be. Taking a proactive approach to their dental health can help them avoid more involved procedures down the road — one of the most common myths that lead to your child’s teeth suffering

in the long run. Common Myth #1: Childhood Teeth Will Straighten Out Over Time One such myth that leads to more complex orthodontic care down the line is that your child’s teeth will straighten out over time. Unfortunately, that is not the case. If their teeth start coming in crooked or off-center, they won’t naturally straighten themselves with time.

The space for their teeth to come in doesn’t grow as they mature. If you leave these issues unattended, it could lead to more significant problems. Common Myth #2: Orthodontic Treatments Are Purely Cosmetic While most people associate orthodontic treatments with getting braces as a teenager, that procedure does much more than merely straighten teeth to help you look better. Getting your jaw and teeth back into proper alignment has a cascading effect on your oral health. It helps improve your biting, chewing, and even speaking ability. Common Myth #3: There Is a Right Age for Orthodontic Care Many parents believes there is a specific age at which it’s appropriate to bring their children in for orthodontic care. The perceived minimum age for a child to receive orthodontic care is around 12-13 or right when they reach high school. However, getting your child such care earlier can help avoid getting braces and fixing issues before they worsen. In reality, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends

At Rothman Orthopaedics, we are exceptionally specialized. We not only specialize in orthopaedics, each of our physicians only focuses on one area of the body so you can get past pain and be what you were.

RothmanOrtho.com/Capital | 609.900.2858

that your children should get an orthodontic checkup no later than age seven. Once they hit that age, their mouth will have a nice balance between their baby and permanent teeth. This window of time allows for an accurate orthodontic evaluation to determine where preventative care is enough or if additional action is required. Where Do Orthodontic Issues Come From? In most cases, a child’s orthodontic problems stem from their genetics — these issues are inherited from their parents. Additionally, some problems can develop over time based on poor oral hygiene habits they learned from a young age. Some of these acquired oral health issues include: • Sucking Their Thumbs • Mouth Breathing • Abnormal Swallowing Patterns • Poor Dental Hygiene • Irregular Loss of Baby Teeth • Poor Nutritional Habits However, parents have reason to hope for viable remedies and solutions to most of these issues. You can remedy these acquired problems with the help of successful orthodontic care provided by an experienced pediatric dentist. Finding a Child Orthodontic You Can Trust. Trusting your child’s teeth and their beautiful smile to a pediatric dentistry practice is something that every parent must come to grips with. Figuring out which childhood orthodontic makes the most sense for your child and their future dental visits becomes critically important. For parents and their children in Hamilton, Hamilton Dental Associates provides them with the experienced pediatric dentists they need to prioritize their oral health as they mature. Okwudibonye a triple threat for Ewing High track team By Rich Fisher

Prior to qualifying for two events in the NJSIAA Meet of Champions this past winter and again this spring, Miriam Okwudibonye could sum her track & field career up in one paragraph. “Last year was my first year doing track,” she said. “I didn’t know what I was good at or what I liked last year, and Monty (coach Dan Montferrat) put me in the 400 meters; my first ever four dash. I got a 64 in that. “That was not bad at all. I felt like this was my event and a big part of myself, and I felt like I could do more. During the summer I worked hard. And I told myself this year I really need to come out and show the world who I am.” She did just that, not only in the 400 meters, but also the 400 intermediate hurdles and 200 meters this spring. The things she accomplished after using last season as basically an introduction to the sport, is pretty mind blowing. “She’s just a hard worker,” said Danny

Johnson, who returned to coach Ewing this year after a stint at Hopewell Valley. “She’s a competitor. She doesn’t like to lose at all, so she just puts it in each day at practice and puts it together come meet time.” Okwudibonye was never really an athlete growing up. The closest she got to any sport was cycling, which didn’t last long. But in the summer of 2020 her cousin, Mykeal Okwudibonye, suggested she give track a shot. Mykeal, a year older than Miriam, had been doing it since middle school and had some success at Ewing. He’s currently in the military and will be headed for Rutgers in the fall. “He’s really good at track and thought I should try it,” Okwudibonye said. “He just had this idea that I’d be good at track. He’s like my role model. I showed up and I was good at it.” She was good for a beginner, putting up decent times for someone doing her first year of track. She did not do the 400 meters or 400 hurdles in the Colonial

Valley Conference Championships, but did take fifth in the 110 hurdles and was 12th in the long jump. Miriam didn’t even do those events much this season, focusing on the 200 and 400 meters and intermediate hurdles. With just one year left, it didn’t look like she had much time to make an impact. But, the rising senior was not going out without a fight. “My cousin helped me out in the summer,” Okwudibonye said. “I was kind of lazy last year, but he woke me up every morning saying ‘Go to the track!’” Upon returning this year, Johnson saw Miriam’s potential and had a conversation with her. “We talked about it indoor season and she just bought into what I was saying; and it pretty much went from there honestly,” Johnson said. “I told her she could be great. I asked her whether she wants to be good or wants to be great, and she wants to be great.” It was the kind of discussion that instills confidence, which means the

world to an athlete. “It speaks volumes for them,” Johnson said. “I think it allows her to approach each meet like she’s one of the best runners out there and compete at a high level each time.” Okwudibonye absorbed her coach’s words in a big way. “Johnson is really the best,” she said. “He helped me out during my journey. He pushed me past my comfort zone. He was the one that actually put me in the four hurdles and thought I’d be good at it. In winter track he actually had been telling me ‘You’re gonna be good in the four hurdles.’ I was like ‘No, I’m not doing it.’ He said “Nope, you’re doing it.’ So I gave it a try and was good at it.” There are not 400 hurdles during indoor meets but Miriam experienced her first real success this past winter in other events. At the Mercer County Championships she finished fourth in the 400 in 62.87. In the Central Jersey Group II meet (Ewing is Group II in winter, Group III

what I wanted, but I was really proud of myself. I would have liked to win at least one event but I’m still really glad I qualified for all my events.” She was hoping to improve in states and be a state champ in the 400 hurdles, but ended up second in a PR 62.72. Okwudibonye also reached the Meet of Champions – which took place Jan. 18 – in the 400 by running a fourth-place PR time of 58.10. Her second-place finishes in sectionals and states are her only losses in the 400 hurdles this season. “She’s just a strong athlete,” Johnson said. “To watch her go over hurdles, she just maintains her rhythm very well. Going over, she’s able to switch legs, she doesn’t stutter and she just finishes very well.” The marks Okwudibonye has put up in just her second year of track have been magnificent, and begs the question of how good she could be had she started earlier in life. “I really do wonder,” she said. “If I started earlier I’m pretty sure I would have been great. If I started my freshman year I would have had good times; maybe I would have a school record; I don’t know. I wish I started earlier but it’s OK.” It’s more than OK. In just having this one year of state-wide success – going against girls who have run in track clubs and have been training for years – Okwudibonye has drawn interest from colleges. “It’s really amazing,” she said. “St. Peter’s has reached out, Stockton, a few others. I haven’t chosen where I want to go, but it’s nice to have those options.” It’s pretty safe to say that in discussing Miriam’s potential future, it might take more than a paragraph to sum up.

in spring), she was fourth in the 400 (61.92) and second in the 55 (7.47). Miriam then took a third-place medal in the 400 (61.14) and fifth-place medal in the 55 (7:49) at the Group II state meet. Although finishing 13th in the Meet of Champions, Akwudibonye produced an indoor PR of 60.27 in the 400. Not bad for a first true season of taking what she learned the previous year and actually applying it to competition. “Her winter season was phenomenal,” Johnson said. “I told her she didn’t even peak indoors and that was the great part about it. She hit the 60 mark and wasn’t even peaking yet. I told her she’ll hit sub-60 outdoors and she did it right away.” Akwudibonye’s outdoor season was even more impressive. It started with the Mercer County meet, in which she won the 400 (58.43) and 400 hurdles (64.03); and took second in the 200 (25.79). “I really did surprise myself in that meet,” Miriam said. “I was scared of this one girl (West Windsor-Plainsboro South’s Anastasia Kudin), but I was really proud of myself beating her in the four dash. I felt really accomplished.” That was followed by strong showings in Central Jersey Group III, where she took second in the 200 (26.27) and 400 hurdles (62.73) and third in the 400 (58.63). She was also part of the thirdplace 4x100 relay team (50.20) along with Sydney Smith, Jade Smith and Aynisha McQuillar. Miriam was not surprised at advancing in four different events. “I felt like I was really prepared for sectionals,” she said the week between sectionals and states. “I put in a lot of hard work for that. An easy(?) way to get a free meal ILENE BLACK BETTING ON BLACK

One evening not too long ago, George and I met friends for dinner at The Firkin Tavern. Kathy and Greg don’t live in the area but their kids do. So whenever they are passing through, we usually meet for dinner at the Firkin. It’s casual, reasonably priced, and the food is great. Maybe there was something in the air, or maybe we were just glad to be together, but we were unusually silly and loud that night. It didn’t help that our youngest son Donnie was there at the bar with friends or that our server was a young man we’ve known since he was toddling around on the local soccer fields. Luckily, we were in a booth at the back, so we didn’t disturb the entire restaurant. (I don’t THINK we did. Let’s put it this way—we were not escorted out.) Kathy and Greg’s daughters and our sons went to grade school and high school together. Kathy and I coached cheerleading at Incarnation School for a bunch of years. We’ve been through a lot together. Needless to say, we have a lot to talk about when we get together. Matt came to take our order. Now, Kathy always orders the same exact thing when we go to Firkin. Buffalo chicken salad, no bleu cheese crumbs, no bleu cheese dressing. Basically, it’s fried chicken dipped in buffalo sauce in a salad. Booooring. I tease her about it all the time. Well, she ordered The Kathy Special. I ordered the same thing, only MY choice was the correct choice. You know, like the menu describes. WITH bleu cheese crumbs and bleu cheese dressing.

Poor Matt had to deal with me giving him my order in a very dramatic and snarky way (directed at Kathy). It went something like this: Me: I’ll have the Buffalo Chicken Salad. The correct way. NOT the way SHE wants hers. Kathy: I want it the way I want it. So sue me. Matt (to me): OK, so you want the REAL Buffalo Chicken Salad. Kathy: Mine is real. Me (ignoring the loudmouth across the table): That is correct. Thank you. George’s birthday was on the Sunday after we had dinner. Our kids were coming over for dinner Sunday evening. This will become relevant soon. Eventually, and we cannot remember how this conversation evolved, Kathy dared George to mow our front lawn wearing one of my old, paintcovered, disreputable-looking cotton housedresses. Now in my defense and in the defense of my housedresses, I am a crafter. Some may say artist (a larger quantity would not use that word). I use acrylic paint in some of my work. And not being possessed of the “neatness” gene, I tend to splatter, spill or otherwise splash paint on my clothes. I don’t want to ruin anything decent, so I bought two of these cotton housedresses to wear when I’m painting. Perfectly logical, if you ask me. The dare was, if George mowed the whole front lawn in my housedress, Kathy and Greg would pay for dinner next time we went out. Well. Free meal? George was instantly game. Kathy’s intent was that George wait till the kids pulled up to our house to mow the lawn in the dress. You know, just to make the kids even more proud of their parents. Didn’t happen like that. I choose a red, white, and blue flowered housedress for him to wear. He slipped that thing on over his bathing trunks, slammed a safari hat on his head, and went to work. I captured the magic on film. And provided commentary. Normally, our road is busy. Of course, on that day it wasn’t. Our neighbor came running over to see what in the world was going on, but that’s all the attention George drew. Very disappointing. I can guarantee you that if I mowed the lawn in some weird get-up, there’d be a procession down our street. George got off way too easy. So now I’m thinking that we have to cook up a dare for either Kathy or Greg. This should be fun! The possibilities are endless. I love being a mature grown-up. Ilene Black has been a resident of Ewing for most of her life and lives across the street from her childhood home. She and her husband, George, have two sons, Georgie and Donnie.

Delaware River delights HELEN KULL EWING THEN & NOW

As we come into the warm months, many with a bit more leisure time available, I’d like to focus for several months on a true treasure within our midst. While accessible all year long, its leisure and recreational offerings are particularly popular during the summer. And while it’s not confined to Ewing, it is most definitely a wonderful asset partially located within Ewing, and one that many of us may not fully know about or appreciate. I am speaking of that stunning four-stranded braid of beauty, the Delaware River Scenic Byway. The what? You doubtless know it by its four separate parts: the mighty Delaware River; the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park trail (formerly the towpath for mules pulling barges on the canal, and later the Belvidere and Delaware Railroad bed); the Delaware and Raritan Feeder Canal; and Route 29 (formerly River Road). All of them meander together along the western shore of New Jersey for much of the way from Trenton to Frenchtown, and were designated nationally as the Delaware River Scenic Byway (DRSB) in October of 2009. While we all know the river is there, and we may drive along Route 29 from time to time and notice the canal, I suspect that many of us do not recognize that all four elements have for some time been woven together into an official National Scenic Byway corridor. We will dive more deeply in the coming months into each of the individual strands that create this corridor, but this month we’ll learn about the Byway designation itself. The National Scenic Byway program was begun in 1991 as a voluntary, community-based project to “recognize, protect and promote America’s most outstanding roads,” with a mission to “preserve and enhance the visual character and scenic beauty of America.” The national Scenic America program, information about which can be found at www.scenic.org, is overseen by the Federal Highway Administration, and seeks to conserve the scenic assets of every community in America through designation as a Byway. Local oversight of those scenic assets within a management plan are overseen by the state’s department

of transportation, but much of the on-going work is most often through the dedication of communities and volunteers seeking to protect and promote their community’s treasures, through the work of non-profit organizations and/or local governments. In New Jersey, the State Department of Transportation oversees the Delaware River Scenic Byway as one of eight designated scenic byways in the state. The host organization for the DRSB is the Delaware River Greenway Partnership, which brings together interested parties from NJ and Pennsylvania to “preserve, protect and promote the Delaware River Valley,” including the Byway. Our Delaware River Scenic Byway (delawareriverscenicbyway.org) is not only a NJ scenic byway, but also a national scenic byway. To be designated as such, a road or corridor must have notable characteristics of one or more of six intrinsic qualities: Scenic, Archaeological, Natural, Historic, Cultural, and Recreational. The DRSB flaunts all six! The SCENIC vistas along the byway of the river and canal, parks and farms, forests and cliffs never cease to please the eye. ARCHAEOLOGICAL finds from early indigenous peoples to more recent colonists are displayed in various locations. The NATURAL beauty of the waterways and flyways, and of wild and protected plants and animals are breath-taking. HISTORIC sites can be found the length of the Byway, from “Trent’s Town” to the Frenchtown Historic District. CULTURAL offerings include art galleries, museums, antique shops, theater and music in quaint towns and the State Capitol. And you’re unlikely to travel the Byway without seeing a walker, runner or biker taking advantage of the RECREATIONAL opportunities. So, the next time you travel Route 29, look for the colorful Byway signs on the roadside, and know that it’s been nationally designated as a special and scenic corridor, by individuals who care, for all of us to enjoy and appreciate! We’ll explore each of its individual pieces over the next few months in this column. See you on the trail! Helen Kull is an Advisor with the Ewing Township Historic Preservation Society, and her husband Robert is a member of the Delaware River Scenic Byway Committee of the Delaware River Greenway Partnership.
