Sourland Mountain Festival returning July 23 By JOe EMANsKi For many years, the Sourland Conservancy depended on two main events for fundraising: the Sourland Mountain Festival, held annually in July, and the Sourland Spectacular cycling-hiking-running event, held each September. Like so many things the past few years, these traditions were compromised by the coronavirus pandemic. The Sourland Spectacular returned as a regular event in 2021, but the festival was canceled for both 2020 and 2021. And now it is back! The 17th annual Sourland Mountain Festival is set to take place on July 23, rain or shine, at Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes, a new venue for the event. In prior years, the festival has been held at Hillsborough Golf and Country Club, which announced its permanent closure this January. The festival, which is set to start at 3 p.m. and go until 8:30, will feature a variety of live musical performers, food vendors, artists and artisans. As usual, local businesses and organizations will also be on hand to do outreach and support the event. The pandemic came at a particularly painful time for the Sourland Conservancy and the festival committee because the 2019 version was the most successful one ever held, attracting a reported 2,300

attendees. Unionville Vineyards has a maximum occupancy of 1,000, so this year’s festival will not be reaching those numbers. But event co-chair K. Suzanne Parsons says the winery will be an excellent site for the event. “We didn’t actually have the festival the last two years, but we had other things to tie in the festival concept,” says Parsons, who has been involved with the festival for about eight years. “In 2020, we had Save the Sourlands Solofest (online), and we got a beautiful film out of it. In 2021, we had Sourland Mountain Happy Hours, one every month for six months, and the last one was live. “Then the board of trustees said, ‘What about reviving the festival this year?’ And here we are.” Parsons, who is co-chairing the event this year with Alison Kavchok, says the music is her favorite part of the festival. This year’s lineup is set to include The Outcrops, James Popik and Supernova, Rainbow Fresh, and Water Street. CHS Junior takes 2nd prize in Lowell Milken Center national art competition By JOe EMANsKi When the Kansas-based Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes announced the nine winners of its 7th annual international ArtEffect Project competition, the list included an 11th grade student at Hopewell Valley Central High School.

VIP tickets are sold on a limited basis and available only for people 21 and older. Crafts and service vendors set to be on hand include Ben D. Straw Creative, Press Designs DTG Printing, Freitag Arts, Dandelion Wishes, Seeds to Sew International, Nonesuch Studio, Whitehouse Station Sauce Company, Turtlemoon Studios, Carolina’s Line, Sailor Tarot Magic, Applied Illustrations, Bracelets From Heart, and Wildbone Alchemy. Educational programs will include “History Lane,” a selection of local historians and geologists on hand to share knowledge and answer questions about the region, and a scavenger hunt open to only the first 250 participants. Also set to be on hand are organizations including Sourland Stewards, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum, and Sourland Cycles. The New Jersey Audubon Society will also offer a bird-watching nature hike during the festival. In 2019, organizers began the effort to convert the festival into a zero-waste event. That effort is set to continue.

Single-use plastics are strongly discouraged, and not provided by festival organizers, although some food vendors may still make use of them. Attendees are asked to bring reusable water bottles which can be filled free of charge at the festival. The festival was originally called the Sourland Music Festival. It was founded

by Tom Kilbourne and James Popik, Sourland Conservancy members, circa 2003. It was originally held at Hillbilly Hall in West Amwell. before outgrowing that location. It then moved to the Polo Field at Hillsborough Golf and Country Club, where it was held through 2019. The Sourland Mountain Festival is

intended to benefit the Sourland Conservancy, an organization dedicated to the protection, promotion and preservation of the 90-square-mile region known as the Sourland Region. The Sourland region is a hard diabase ridge starting near Lambertville and stretching eastward toward Hillsborough. It is one of the three major areas of unbroken habitat in New Jersey and is said to be home to the largest contiguous forest in Central New Jersey. The Sourland Conservancy boasts of the region as consisting of a vast ecosystem of forest, wetlands and grasslands, as well as numerous hiking trails and preserves for the public to enjoy. The region is home to a beautiful array of plant and animal species, some of which are rare or endangered. Volunteers are needed before, during, and after the festival. Lawrence Hopewell Trail, Mercer Meadows - Rosedale Lake, Hopewell. Saturday, July 9, 8 to 10:30 p.m. $15 for single riders ages 12 to 17; $20 for single riders ages 18+; group rates available. Park and meet at the lot by the Mercer Meadows Dog Park and Rosedale Lake area Mercer Meadows is expansive, home to 1,600 acres and three county properties — the Pole Farm, Rosedale Lake, and Curlis Lake Woods — with a wealth of wildlife, woods, and gentle winds weaving through the area. The Lawrence Hopewell Trail traverses two townships and covers more than 20 miles. While pedestrians and cyclists are free to navigate the area during the day, the latter can show up for an event of the celestial kind on Saturday, July 9, for a nighttime, six-mile route guided by the glow of the full moon. The 2022 Full Moon Bike Ride takes advantage of this natural illumination, creating what organizers describe on their website as an “out of this world experience” for riders. When the moon rises around 8:30 p.m., those 12 and older will embark on a brightly decorated route that takes about 45 minutes, all while classical musicians provide accompaniment along the route. Registration is required for all attendees regardless of participation in the ride itself. Friday, July 1, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Free As simple as can be, this exploration of another part of Mercer Meadows is a nofrills, no-theme hike that starts at the lot outside the Reed Bryan Farm. A trained naturalist will lead this journey without any set sights or stops, but all spontaneity, as the morning progresses. According to the Mercer County Park Commission, “brief pauses” may be taken to admire the views, wildlife, and environment. Water bottles and durable footwear are suggested.

Watson Woods - Abbott Bluff Trail, John A. Roebling Memorial Park, Hamilton. Saturday, July 2, 10 a.m. to noon. Free. Park and meet at the Tulpehaking Nature Center 157 Westcott Avenue, Hamilton. The Abbott Marshlands are named after Trenton-born archaeologist and naturalist Charles Conrad Abbott, who documented his experiences living near the marshlands and discovering artifacts. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the more than 3,000 acres of wetlands and bluffs run “adjacent to the Delaware River between Trenton and Bordentown,” according to their website.

Children under 12 are not permitted to participate in the ride for safety reasons, but are allowed to attend “accompanied and supervised by an adult.” Non-riders do not have to pay a fee, but donations are requested, as the nonprofit that creates, manages and maintains the trail, the Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corporation, is organizing the event. All guests must still sign a waiver. LHT requests that all riders wear helmets and have working front lights on their bikes. Decorating the bikes with extras, such as the free glowsticks provided, is highly encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to winners in youth and adult categories for their creativity. There will be restrooms available, as well as “a few vendors selling snacks and drinks,” but LHT advocates for bringing along snacks and/or having a moonlit picnic dinner beforehand. No alcohol is permitted, there are no current COVID-19 protocols in place, and the rain date is the following day on Sunday, July 10. Additionally, LHT’s Saturday Morning Walking Club typically hosts a free monthly event exploring the area. However, because of the Full Moon Bike Ride in July, the Saturday Morning Walks will resume on August 13. The location of the August event is, as of press time, to be determined. Named “Land of the Turtle” to honor the animal’s symbolic relationship with the native Lenape, the Tulpehaking Nature Center facility offers a host of educational opportunities for visitors. It’s also a fitting place to start walking from to engage in the different activities that the Abbott Marshlands has scheduled for July. On the first Saturday of every month, the Friends for the Abbott Marshlands, the nonprofit that uplifts the area through programming and protective measures, hosts wellness walks on different trails. This month’s walk, co-sponsored by the RWJ Fitness and Wellness Center, invites attendees able to bask in an “early summer walk” among others. The group will go on the Abbott Bluff Trail through Watson Woods, a path that requires a climb to the top of the bluff, then a descent to a depression in the ground where Abbott’s home was destroyed in a 1914 fire, according to the Marshlands’ website. Nature Therapy Walk: A Shinrin-yoku Experience with Sharon Lohse Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Friday, July 8, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $35 admission ($28 with member discount). Stewardship is a core mission of Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, where habitats like meadows, woods, and ponds have been flourishing since the 1930s. BHWP claims to be “the nation’s one-andonly living museum specifically devoted to native plants,” making for a tranquil trip to see what’s in bloom this July —butterfly weed, false sunflowers and sweet pepperbush, to name a few — surrounded by a 100-acre deer exclosure to keep the species

intact. Since retiring from her position as a psychiatric nurse, Sharon Lohse has continued to develop unique specializations that unify her lifelong passion for nature and the endless desire to help others. With certifications in forest and horticultural therapy, she is a garden trail guide whose background, as well as later pursuits of science at Delaware Valley University, influenced the core elements of this upcoming BHWP event. According to a 2019 National Geographic article, Shinrin-yoku is a Japanese term that translates to “forest bathing,” a form of ecotherapy focused on atmospheric immersion and its corresponding health benefits. This idea of mediating outdoors has inspired Lohse’s nature therapy walk, as the BHWP page continues, where attendees “will explore the land of the preserve and awaken [their] senses to its sounds, beings, textures and beauty.” These gentle strides, at a considerably slower rate, are meant to truly absorb the perks of reflection, whether against a sunlit pond or looking inwards. The “emphasis is on unplugging,” BHWP says, to eliminate stress and increase prosperity. TravelStorys Mobile Tours

Available from the D&R Greenway Land Trust for Cedar Ridge Preserve, Healing Trails, Abbott Marshlands, and St. Michaels Farm Preserve. Since their inception in 1989, D&R Greenway Land Trust has preserved more than 20,000 acres of land in New Jersey. This has allowed nature, conservation efforts, and green open spaces to flourish — despite time and time again being named the most densely populated state in the entire country. While D&R has no events planned at the moment, anyone can go alone or with company on their TravelStorys mobile tours, which use a free application and GPS to access audio guides. There are four D&R sites currently adopting the TravelStorys platform as a location-based podcast to share local stories and history lessons. Listeners can appreciate the paths at their own pace, enjoying time on protected properties by following along to the prerecorded voices. After downloading the guide, the application functions “more like a compass” and works offline, meaning that the insight travels with the user as it recognizes each location in the tour. Cedar Ridge Preserve’s “Women in Conservation” tour is an acknowledgement of 16 women whose contributions in areas such as science and environmental protec-

tion have shaped the world. The idea to feature these females came from a young girl herself, Princeton resident Madeleine Freundlich, as part of a Girl Scout project. International figures like climate change activist Greta Thunburg are included, as well as local leaders including Beverly Mills and Elaine Buck, the founders of the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum who worked to preserve not only the physical area, but the personal accounts and cultural significance of Black history in the Sourlands. The Healing Trails are a tour through Princeton’s Greenway Meadows, divided by three colors of varying accessibilities and difficulties, that are meant to help with personal health. Being surrounded by nature physically and emotionally benefits people of all ages, soothing ailments, issues, as well as a myriad of conditions that were dealt with right on that same trail. D&R’s website says that the tour, inspired by the Healing Trails art exhibition in their Johnson Education Center venue, revolves around the “stories of people healing from surgery, illness or trauma by walking on [their] preserved lands.” Trails marked as green are handicap accessible and paved, yellow are “relatively flat” and unpaved, while red trails are “more challenging” and uphill. D&R hopes that those soaking up the restorative qual-

ity of lush greens and a warm sun will “find peace and perspective” as they progress. The Healing Trails were created in memory of Edie Howard. St. Michaels Farm Preserve’s mobile tour is through an abundance of open space at the edge of Hopewell Borough, where an old orphanage and farm stood before the land was purchased for preservation in 2010. The trail invites young audiences to learn about nature, the website continues, through exploration and expression. By giving them the tools to find a “home in nature,” the audio informs children about how outdoor experiences can create special connections to the world. The trail is a tribute to this, and now encompasses a memorial area called “Jackson’s Place,” established on Earth Day last year to remember Jackson McGrath Place, a young man whose ve for the environment will positively inspire visitors for years to come. Each session is three weeks in length, Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. with Before and After Camp available. Session I is for those entering grades 4-7 in the fall and runs from July 5-21. Session II is for grades 8-12 and runs July 25-August 11. There are 2

Blend Bar & Bistro’s Central Jersey Beer Fest Returns Blend Bar and Bistro opened its doors in Hamilton in October of 2012 and created an anniversary event that has grown into a tasting extravaganza, the Central Jersey Beer Fest. 2022 marks Blend’s 10-year anniversary, and Blend will be hosting smaller events at their restaurant location practically weekly all summer leading up to Saturday, October 8, Central Jersey Beer Fest at Mercer County Park Festival Grounds in West Windsor. Antonio Carannante, festival coordinator and co-owner of Blend Bar and Bistro in Hamilton, is justifiably pumped. In the past #CJBeerFest featured a tasting of more than 150 craft beers, some wines, even a few spirits, up to 10 food trucks, live bands, and a variety of other vendors, including axe throwing. The festival has attracted an average of 3,000+ festival lovers. Folks come for all over the Mercer County area, but even groups of family and friends from Philadelphia, Rhode Island, Connecticut, the Carolinas, California, New York, and more have made the trip to the Central Jersey Beer Fest. “As with past events, we will have a strong focus on education and safety all throughout the festival grounds. DeMarco and his team also work with both Steinert and Hamilton baseball teams. “The teams enjoy it as they have known each other since Little League,” says DeMarco. “It’s very nice, former students will stay in touch and now even bring their kids in for training. It is great to see. In addition to taking home cash prizes the winning students will have their artwork showcased on LMC’s website and in LMC’s Hall of Unsung Heroes in Fort Scott, Kansas, a museum and research center. Other unsung heroes featured in artworks by the students included actress Hedy Lamarr, who developed communication technology that helped prevent Nazis from intercepting classified messages during World War II; Muhammad ibn Musa AlKhwarizmi, a 9th-century Persian mathematician; and Will Counts, a photographer who captured imagines of anger and violence during Arkansas’ 1950s public school desegregation. Lewis Hine (1874-1940) was an American photographer who advocated for child-labor laws and fought for social justice. Cui’s painting includes a portrait of Hine, done in oil paint, along with a number of images of child laborer faces, which she illustrated using charcoal. The back-

drop of the painting, also done in charcoal, is of factories and their smokestacks. “What I did is an extension of what he was trying to do. In all his photographs he forced you to look at these kids. In a lot of them these kids are making direct eye contact so I tried to distill that in my painting,” Cui said. “Everything that I noticed in what he did in his photography is on the canvas.” Cui said she chose Fine from among the Lowell Milken Center’s unsung heroes because she saw parallels between what he did with his photography and what she hopes to do with her art. “He photographed children working in coal mines with the goal of highlighting child labor problems. He always focused on the people, he always focused on the children, and his photos often showed the kids looking right at the camera,” she says. “He was able to distill all of these unethical practices in these factory conditions in one photo, and that’s what I hope to do with my art.” Durr knew about the ArtEffect competition because she had been

said. “She’s just a super hard worker, very serious about everything she does. With her, it’s challenging to me to figure out how to push her even further than she goes on her own.” Durr, who is president of the Art Educators of New Jersey in addition to her work at CHS, said Cui’s initial sketches of Hine were mostly portraits of the man. The piece started to come together when Cui created an image that also shared all the details of why Hine was being recognized as an unsung hero. Cui says she her use of charcoal as a medium is deliberate and part of the recognition of Hine’s work. “These kids were working in factories,” she says. “I wanted to choose a medium that was messy, where I could use my hands and could demonstrate the conditions in the factories.” Durr says the use of charcoal also “creates this gorgeous sense of depth and contrast and emotion in the piece.” The honor from the Lowell Milken Center was not the only art award that Cui has won this school year. The rising senior also won first prize in the Congressional Art Competition for her congressional district. Her landscape painting, “Vestiges of a Passerby,” will be on display in the Capitol next year. Cui says she still thinks of art as a

Record-breaker Griffin has strong comeback season for HoVal By Rich Fisher After missing a year and a half of track and field, Hopewell Valley Central High senior Amaury Griffin returned this past winter and expectations weren’t exactly, umm, through the roof, shall we say. “I really didn’t have any hope for me at first,” he said. “It was so long since I did anything.” But when the Mercer County Indoor Relays took place, Griffin gamely ran the four-by-200 relay. In the movies, he would have run a blazing leg en route to a state record. But in the real world? “After I got done I just. . .threw up,” he said with a sheepish grin. In fairness; Griffin wasn’t the first athlete to suffer that indignity nor will he be the last. It’s what happens after that matters; and that’s where the story gets good. Before the winter was over, Griffin had quickly gotten himself back in shape. In the 55 meters he ran a school-record tying indoor time of 6.72 in taking third

in Central Jersey Group III. In the high jump he was third in the SJTCA Winter Meet No. 6 for Groups II, III and NonPublic A with a PR of 5-8, and he took fifth in CJ Group III in 5-6. And in his speciality, the triple jump, Griffin was second in the Mercer County meet in 41-4.5, and his mark of 41-10.75 in the SJTCA Winter Meet No. 12 qualified him for the Meet of Champions, where he jumped a school-record tying 42-3.5 to finish 12th. “He could have won the counties indoors if that kid from Lawrenceville (Gregory Foster) didn’t go crazy and jump like, a state record (45-6),” Hopewell coach Rick Smith said. Fueled by his indoor success, Griffin made up for lost time in the outdoor season, winning the Mercer Coaches Classic long jump in a PR 21-10 and the MCT title in 20-11.25, while taking third in the CJ Group III meet in 20-0.75. I thought I might as well pick up that sport. Coach is like ‘Yeah, we’ll just give you the ball and you can run downfield and score touchdowns.’” Dave Caldwell’s game plan was no doubt a bit more involved than that, but the message was clear – a guy with Griffin’s speed could be a bonus. Unfortunately, it would take a while to find out. After carrying the ball just three times as a junior, Griffin became academically ineligible and would not compete in football or track for the remainder of the school year. “I just couldn’t wait to get back to track,” he said. “I knew I was fast and I was letting down my team by not being there and not being eligible. I did learn a lesson. Academics come first and then sports. My grades are a lot better now.” He showed flashes of brilliance on the football field last fall, running for a teamhigh 336 yards and four touchdowns on 61 carries (6.6 yards per carry). He followed that up with his stellar winter and spring track seasons, and qualified in triple jump for the NewBalance nationals held on June 19. “As a jumper he’s got a couple things to keep in mind,” Smith said. “They’re super technical events. I’ve only worked with him indoor and outdoor this year so it’s fun to see him kind of realize his potential.” Despite missing so much time, Griffin

has made a mark in HVCHS track & field. His indoor time of 6.72 in the 55 meters tied Will Gibson’s 10-year-old school record. His 43-6 triple jump mark at the Coach’s Classic smashed an 11-year-old record that Griffin broke again by an inch at the counties, and his 42-3.5 in the indoor Meet of Champions also set a new Bulldogs standard. The record Amaury is proudest of came when he, as a freshman, teamed with seniors Will Titus, Sean Dolan and Kevin Murry set the school’s sprint medley relay record of 3:28.40. “This spring was his coming-out party in the county,” Smith said. “Everybody says ‘Where was he? Where did he come from?’ It kind of stinks he’s a senior because he’s just getting revved up.” Although colleges only started paying attention this year, Griffin has drawn the interest of NAIA school Ottawa in Kansas, and several junior colleges. “I think missing all that time set me back a lot,” he said. “If I had that other season last year I’d be even better than I am now. But I think I made up for it somewhat.” And the good news for whatever college he chooses, is that he’s still making up for it and getting better each day. “Absolutely,” Smith said. “As far as potential, he’s super talented. If he gets a coach that will meet his needs and kind of keep him on the right path he could do great in college.”

In the five years that I have been writing for Hopewell Express, my March 2019 column entitled, “Nesting boxes could help threatened kestrels rebound” easily elicited the most enthusiastic response from readers of this column, volunteer groups, and local conservation organizations. The piece indicated that FoHVOS was looking to install 50 nesting boxes throughout Hopewell Valley with the hopes of providing the declining kestrel population a suitable place to nest. Local school children, scouts and individuals quickly built nesting boxes. Landowners and public land managers clamored to get them installed at private residences, Chickadee Creek Farms, and parks

wildlife to roam freely. A statewide plan known as CHANJ, or Connecting Habitat Across NJ, helps address these issues. The Township Environmental Commission has been discussing how to support the FoHVOS Reptile Rescue through researching ways to implement CHANJ recommendations. Gretchen Fowles, GIS Specialist Biologist, for New Jersey DEP Fish and Wildlife ENSP, who heads the CHANJ work, said: “The FoHVOS Reptile Rescue Project represents a great way for community scientists to get involved in collecting data to better understand where barriers to habitat connectivity are occurring for wildlife. The CHANJ team is excited to work with FoHVOS and Hopewell Township on this effort.” George Snyder, township administrator and director of public works, has done the initial research on road signs and will take recommendations from the Environmental Commission. In addition to the Environmental Commission, the Hopewell Valley Open Space Advisory Committee discussed the Reptile Rescue and related Open Space recommendations at a recent meeting. Van Clef noted that ENSP protocols would be shared with volunteers and supporters. Committee members also pointed out the importance of considering wildlife behav-

ior and habitat in property maintenance plans. Jeff Hoagland, HVOSAC member and the Director of Education for The Watershed Institute believes that guidance is needed on all levels. “I really like what FoHVOS and their partners are doing. It will be helpful to have evidence-based best practices to guide conservation organizations in the maintenance of their properties to minimize conflicts with reptiles and amphibians,” Hoagland said. Suggestions as easy as modifying times to mow lawns and fields can have a dramatic impact on turtles and other habitat. James Hutzelmann, Hopewell Township engineer and director of community development, said that simplicity would be key to getting optimal results. “We can adjust when we mow as long as we share clear-cut directions,” he said. Mayor Courtney Peters Manning supports this important work. “In furtherance of our extensive commitment to Open Space in Hopewell Township, I applaud these efforts to minimize damage done to local wildlife and look forward to working together with local partners on this project.” Lisa Wolff is the executive director of Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space.
