Australian transplant is harness racing’s rising star

Randy Now’s Man Cave makes its move (to Hightstown) but retains its groove

BY RICH FISHER Bordentown residents may not be aware of the fact that one of the hottest and most charismatic young drivers in the sport of harness racing is walking among them. But if an Aussie accent pops up in a crowd, more than likely that’s the guy. Todd McCarthy, a 29-year-old Australian transplant, received the sport’s 2021 Rising Star Award from the U.S. Harness Writing Association after a campaign in which he won 337 races and $7,458,614 in purse earnings. McCarthy hasn’t missed a beat this season. As of July 21, he ranked 32nd in wins in North America with 156, and 14th in earnings with $3,111,883. He stood fourth in earnings among drivers with less than 1,000 starts. On June 18, McCarthy drove Pebble Beach to victory in the North America Cup at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Canada, making him, along with brothers Luke and Andy, the first brother trio to See McCARTHY, Page 10

Garden State in full flower at Bordentown Farmers Market BY SUE FERRARA Each year from late March to Thanksgiving, Jersey farmers show just why we own the nickname: The Garden State. New Jersey is home to 9,900 farms, with a combined total of 750,000 acres according to the Department of Agriculture. State officials note: “New Jersey is one of the top 10 producers of blue-

berries, cranberries, peaches, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, apples, spinach, squash, and asparagus.” For eight more weeks, through Sept. 25, area residents can find some of those goodies at the Bordentown Farmers Market on Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Carslake Community Center on Crosswicks Road. Baker Emily Gaston enjoys

Sunday mornings at the market; she loves the shady, intimate atmosphere and the customers who come weekly. A 2018 graduate of Hamilton’s Steinert high school, Gaston attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, where she earned a degree in baking and pastry arts. On her website she notes: “I am most proud of my internship at Walt See MARKET, Page 5

Impresario Randy Now — AKA Randy Ellis — had something of a vision for Randy Now’s Man Cave when he opened the store’s first location on Farnsworth Avenue in Bordentown in 2012. With the move of his store to a space on West Ward Street in Hightstown that is three times the size of his old space, he has been able to broaden that vision. “I had no clue what I was doing, but yes, I had a vision,” Now says at his new quarters just off Route 33. Prior to opening Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown, Now put Bordentown on the map, booking shows at The Record Collector. Years before that, he put a onceseedy neighborhood in Trenton on the map for the shows he booked in the 1980s and ’90s at City Gardens on Calhoun Street. Joe Zook and Blues Deluxe had a Tuesday night residency at the club, and Now arranged for See MAN CAVE, Page 8

AROUND TOWN

Open house at historic Old City Hall set for Aug. 14 The Old City Hall Restoration Committee volunteers will host an open house welcoming visitors to learn about Old City Hall and its importance in the “Little City with a Lot of Charm,” on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All are welcome to stop by for a personal tour and ask questions about the building. The Bordentown Old City Hall Restoration Committee also announced that it has formed a subcommittee composed of independent volunteers to pursue the vision of Old City Hall as the “cultural beacon” of Bordentown. As a cultural center, Old City Hall would be a hallmark of the community that can provide a place for education, seasonal gatherings, lectures, activities, philanthropy, and everyday fun. The subcommittee is actively seeking volunteers to conceive the mission and values that will guide how this vision comes to fruition. The formation of the subcommittee is intended to empower individuals and

groups to organize various activities, events, and happenings in or involving Old City Hall, organizers say. The first meeting of the new subcommittee will be held two weeks later on Sunday, Aug. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. Thereafter, the subcommittee plans to meet at least monthly to plan and manage events and fundraising activities with volunteers and collaborative partner organizations. Initially, the sub-committee will be cochaired by township residents Kristi Kantorski and Tim Rollender. “Bordentown has a creative energy and passion all its own. We look forward to working with the committee and engaging with others in the community to host a wide variety of groups and present events that provide educational, recreational, cultural and civic services, creating something special,” Kantorski said in a media release. “There was so much thoughtful care and deliberate attention put forward to restore Old City Hall — it’s inspiring and I think we’ll tap into those same qualities

when our subcommittee works to partner or put on events or activities,” Rollender said. Those interested in joining the subcommittee are welcome to attend. Questions can be emailed to ochcculturalvision@gmail.com. “After years of thoughtful planning and diligent restoration under the guidance of the Old City Hall Restoration Committee and the stewardship of the City, Old City Hall is ready to take on a bigger role,” Old City Hall’s Restoration Committee chairwoman Carol Hill said. Pre-Covid, Old City HAll hosted the popular Bordentown City Train Show around the holidays. More recently, the space has been a host to speakers presenting on local history and niche topics of interest. The Old City Hall Restoration Committee is a group of volunteers who came together to fundraise and restore Old City Hall to its graceful state and invite residents and visitors to come inside to enjoy its history.

A new subcommittee of the Bordentown Old City Hall Restoration Committee will look to increase the number of cultural events held in the historic building.

Bonaparte’s Point Breeze focus of new garden and archeology talk BY dAN AUBREY The Point Breeze property in Bordentown, the former estate of Joseph Bonaparte —- the former King of Spain and brother to French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte — has been a center of interest since it became the property of the D&R Greenway, City of Bordentown, and State of New Jersey. The D&R Greenway is the owner of the section known as the Gardener’s House, the only structure remaining from Joseph Bonaparte’s presence there from 1816 through 1839. Recent work on the property prompted the following explanation from D&R Greenway president and CEO Linda Mead: “The D&RG hired a gardener, (Lambertville field crop manager and land steward) Lara Periard, who laid out the plots with advice from a committee that included local reps and an expert in historic preservation and gardens. We aligned it with the plots shown on the historic 1847 map of the site. “Our staff tilled the soil for the garden using a tractor that was donated to D&RG

by Betty Wold Johnson. We had mushroom compost and mulch delivered, to be used on the garden. We also recycled bluestone that we were told is from the original Bonaparte mansion. It will be used to create a path through the garden so people can “walk in the footsteps of Bonaparte.” “D&RG staff member David Seiler, who has expertise in carpentry and historic renovations, is (managing) the fence. We modeled it after a fence at a vegetable garden on an historic site, Hildene (the Robert Todd Lincoln home in Vermont). A wooden fence since appears in sketches to be historically accurate to the site. Of course, it needs to be high enough to keep out deer. It should be close to finished and planting is next. “Lara, who spent five years working at a large organic farm, Chickadee Farm, has planned the garden and will be planting historic seed obtained from Monticello (Thomas Jefferson’s garden was the same era, circa 1820). We will be planting fall crops based on the list of vegetables and herbs that were originally grown here.

Point Breeze Estate in Bordentown. “We have been taking photos so that we have a timeline as the garden and fence are created. “We are looking for volunteers to help weed, water and harvest. We are install-

ing an irrigation system.” For more information on the D&R Greenway, go to drgreenway.org. Meanwhile, the Bordentown Historical Society notes the following: On Aug. 6 at 4 p.m., Dr. Richard Veit, professor of anthropology and interim dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Monmouth University, will discuss the archeological findings from his recent dig at the Gardener’s House, the only remaining intact structure from Joseph Bonaparte’s Point Breeze Estate. Veit did his initial archeological dig at Point Breeze in 2007 in the area of Bonaparte’s first mansion. His most recent dig was in October 2021, at the Gardener’s House. The free talk with wine reception compliments the BHIS’s current Joseph Bonaparte exhibit and takes place at the Bordentown Historical Society’s headquarters at the Friends Meeting House, 302 Farnsworth Avenue, Bordentown. Registration is requested. More on the BHS at bordentownhistoricalsociety.wildapricot.org.

She also had strawberry scones and macarons, which are small French sandwich cookies made with almond flour and egg whites. “I started this baking adventure on a whim,” Gaston said. The whim blossomed. “Six out of seven days, I am baking, experimenting and filling customer orders,” she said. Her creating is done at a shared space called Cherry Street Kitchen in Trenton. At the moment, the whim is not a passing fancy. Gaston has begun cultivating a following, evidenced by the fact that two hours after the market opened, she was down to five boxes of cookies. People can only find her baked goods on Sunday at the Bordentown Farmers Market and on Tuesdays at the Robbinsville Farmers Market. Camiolo, who started roasting beans as a hobby, did an apprenticeship with Rojo’s Roastery in Lambertville before flooding closed that location. He did some freelance roasting on the side, and when the Cass Street site opened up, he decided to turn the avocation into a full-time business. “My approach is that everyone should feel comfortable coming to my cafe,: Camiolo said. “I want to be so down-toearth that anyone can come in for coffee.” Enjoy your coffee and beans any day in Trenton, or on Sunday at the market. Now, she has her own dreamcome-true operation. Web: fordsnestfarm.com. *** Productive farms have rich soil; they often have rich histories. Such is the case of Abe’s Acres Farm in East Windsor. The farm was purchased years ago by Abraham Feldsher, a Jewish-Russian immigrant who came to America in the late 1800’s. He worked the farm, which eventually passed to his daughter Rebecca, a pediatrician, and her husband Joseph Notterman. Their daughter had a son, Gabriel Siciliano, who now owns and operates the farm. Siciliano named the farm Abe’s Acres after his great-grandfather. Siciliano comes from a long line of physicians; the name Feldsher means doctor. Siciliano thought he too might follow that path until his grandfather, Joseph, died in 2013. As a child, Siciliano spent many weekends learning from his gentlemanfarmer grandfather. The impact of Notterman’s death found Siciliano rethinking his life’s calling and purpose. “I took stock of what I really wanted out of my life and made a list of things that interested me — versus what other people wanted me to be — and so things that fulfilled me were working outside, growing stuff, building things and more than that being able to not focus on any one thing,” Siciliano told a reporter for “The Delmarva Farmer” newspaper in 2019.

On a hot July Sunday, Siciliano’s farm had an array of vegetables: tomatoes, squash, and beets. There were blueberries, peaches, eggs, and jars of pickled peppers which sold out quickly. Asked what he likes the most about farming and he answers quickly. “You get to eat the fruits of your labor; I like stewarding the land for the next generation, and I like giving back to the community,” he said. The new Man Cave retail store is also a designated Amazon pick-up location. Now says, “Fenton was bugging me for a couple of years, ‘You’ve got to come over here and check out some spaces.’ We came out here a few months ago to say hello to him, and there were a couple of vacancies he knew of in town.” And although he says past experiences made him think that “Hightstown was a little rough,” Now and his wife visited and “parked right here and saw this building and the sign said ‘Closing March 1.’ I asked Mark to look into it.” It turns out his new landlord and his wife were fans of Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown and actually came out to the store on several occasions. Since the move, Now is carefully monitoring his new customer base and his old customer base via an extensive e-mail list, and wants to take some time to get the new store grounded with a solid customer base. He says about 60 percent of the Man Cave patrons over the years have been women, shopping for their husbands or boyfriends or just for themselves. “When I opened this store in Bordentown somebody said to me ‘You know you’re going to lose all your women customers with a name like this,’ and I said well I’ll bet you it’s going to be 60 percent men, 40 percent women. McCARTHY continued from Page 1 each win a $1 million race. McCarthy is doing all this while enjoying life among the locals as he regularly races at the Meadowlands and Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack in Chester, Pennsylvania. “I liked the town,” he said. “Andy actually spent a lot of time here when he first moved over to the U.S. (Trainer) Noel Daley was based around Bordentown. He actually used to live right in town, and when Andy came over, he lived in that house. I heard a lot of good stories about Bordentown.” Part of the allure is its location. For a guy who flies a lot, it’s nice to have Newark and Philadelphia international airports less than an hour away, or even Robbinsville and Mercer County for lesser flights. If he’s hankering for life in the big city, there’s always New York or Philly. But what McCarthy really enjoys is the surroundings themselves. “I’ve pretty much been everywhere down around Farnsworth Avenue,” he said. “Once a week, I’ll try and go in after the races, usually go and have dinner and a beer somewhere. It’s a really friendly little town and it’s a beautiful little spot.” McCarthy grew up in the small town of Queensland before moving to Sydney at age 20. “I think it would be great living in a city,” he said. “But at the same time, I don’t think I’d want to do that at this time. I like having a little bit more privacy and having it a little quieter. That seems to suit me. “I was lucky to get the place I got. I really enjoy being there. It’s a beautiful spot and it feels like home. It makes it a lot easier being so far away from

Australia.” Winning lots of races can also fend off homesickness, and McCarthy has done his share of that. Coming from a racing family, he watched his father and older brothers enjoy success while making his own name for himself Down Under. John McCarthy, the family patriarch, won the million-dollar Miracle Mile at Menangle Park in New South Wales, Australia in 2005-06. Fourteen years later, after coming to America for a year, Luke returned home to win the same race each of the past three years. Andy, who has hauled in nearly $64 million in purses since coming to America in 2007, won the sport’s biggest race when he drove Ramona Hill to a record-tying time in the Hambletonian at the Meadowlands in 2020. That marked the same summer Todd came over to give U.S. racing a try. “The East Coast of America has always been the pinnacle of harness racing in the world,” McCarthy said. “It’s kind of where you want to be driving in the biggest races and driving with the best guys. It’s something we’ve always admired growing up in Australia. And then watching Andy do what he’s done, it was definitely a big part in wanting to come over.” Unfortunately, McCarthy made his decision just as Covid-19 was introducing itself to the world. “Covid was so insane,” he said. “When it started, I was kind of in the process of getting my visa to come over. Then it hit and it was like, ‘Whoa!’ It really put the air brakes on.” McCarthy was eventually able to get here that year and gain some experience See McCARTHY, Page 15

what’s happening Checking the chess scene BY REBEKAH SCHROEDER

Transfixed by the boards in front of them, a group of youthful participants with smiles and concentrated stares faced off against a single player playing 19 simultaneous games against them. For two hours, the focus was on chess. Out of the 25 total children who joyously faced off against National Master Winston Ni, only three lasted until a technical draw was announced. This was a busy day for Ni, but also for Eric Wu, the founder of nonprofit Impact Chess, the organization responsible for hosting their first ever “Chess in the Park” event on July 10 at Princeton’s Turning Basin Park. Wu, a four-time NJ state grade champion, wanted to give the children who assembled “an experience, a memory,” of chess for them to leave with. He noted the enthusiastic reactions of the younger players as Ni — who is also the director of community engagement for Impact Chess, a rising senior at Princeton Day School, and the 2018 National K-9 Cham-

pion — made moves in his “simultaneous exhibition.” “I found that just to be super beautiful, because of how much these kids are involved in the game and how much they care about it, and through that thinking, through that competitive atmosphere, you can really see growth,” Wu said. Along with the Princeton Chess Academy and volunteers, Impact Chess had set up 20 chess boards, then started with 30 minutes of free play for the young students. Wu said the day, which steadily grew in size and spirit over four hours, exceeded his expectations. Explaining that “the mission of Impact Chess is to spread chess to those who would benefit from it the most,” Wu acknowledged that while the game can help anyone, the nonprofit mainly focuses on children and seniors. For children, he added, there are positives in “inspiring them, giving them a hobby or passion they can pursue, which helps them a lot later in life as they

Taking the Fight Against Chronic Pain to New Levels

CHESS, continued from Page 2

develop,” but the same social and cognitive perks can apply to seniors, too. Wu has spent this year advocating for the advancement of chess, officially registering the nonprofit organization in January, 2022. According to its website, Impact Chess has raised $1,330 and impacted 100 people through attendance at events and donations. But before chess came into Wu’s life, there was Go. “When I was very young, and I lived in China, the popular board games were Go and Chinese chess,” said Wu, who usually played with his father, Haibo. Go is also strategy-based, but features a larger board with an increased number of moves and pieces — chess has 20 starting possibilities to Go’s 361, and instead of representing hierarchical ranks as chess pieces do, Go stones are rounded — with the objective being to take up as much of the board, or territory, as possible. Born in San Francisco, Wu frequently moved back and forth between California and China until his family relocated to Princeton in the summer before second grade. There, he noticed that chess dominated the world of thinking board games, so his days of Go stopped. From the day he signed up for chess summer camp at Princeton Academy, right next to the Princeton Day School he would later attend, it was obvious that Wu’s future would be heavily influenced by chess and its principles. “Chess has taught me a lot, and throughout the process I felt my own growth. I became better at chess, and I also met new people, so that’s why I’ve been playing ever since,” he said, adding that chess helped him explore creativity, strategic thinking, and how to remain calm under pressure. Wu, 16, has lived in Princeton for nearly half of his life, but he is also a rising junior at Phillips Exeter Academy, a private boarding school in New Hampshire. His chess rating is around 2,000 — what he describes as“expert level” — and he is also in the top 100 for his age in the United States. Yet entrepreneurship is more of his current focus. The idea for Impact Chess came from a late-night phone call with a friend, where Wu, still in Exeter, found himself reminiscing about past life experiences. “Thinking back, I realized that a lot of the decisions I made were perfectly what would have led me to where I am today. I was able to, in a lot of different situations, find the best thing for myself and also others,” he explained, linking that to his deep understanding of chess, where high level players regularly think

several moves ahead. “At that moment, I really felt that I was blessed by the game of chess, [and] I thought I should definitely give this to other people. There’s so many ways that chess can help.” Wu knew that gearing programming towards students, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities, could result in “a brighter future” changed by the mutual celebration of chess. “In today’s society, political polarization is almost at an all-time high. Chess teaches us so much about perspective, strategic thinking, and removing emotions from judgment — all those things that could definitely just help people think more rationally, more sympathetically. I really feel like chess is just a great tool that helps people think about so many different things, and I wanted to share that with others,” Wu said. A renewed interest in the game, due in part to both the pandemic and the success of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” was another factor in making the dream of bringing chess to new audiences possible. The sale of physical chess sets rose, as did the rate of female players who identified with the show’s lead. Online platforms such as Chess.com exploded, as people were inspired by not just media, but the chance of escaping isolation, as many chose boards over boredom. Twitch, which has had a partnership with Chess.com since 2018, streamed matches and tournaments live. While Wu appreciated that the popularity of chess increased, a downside was that “because of the pandemic, many tournaments, events, in-person lessons, and classes all had to be canceled. So even though the pandemic has helped this surge and chess playing in general, it really harmed the in-person experience of the over-the-board tournaments, and the United States Chess Federation events.” Wu continued that “these closures, and overall, the harm that COVID has caused,” all factored into the message of Impact Chess — not just to expand the game’s reach, but “to try to heal these communities back together,” he said. Prior to the pandemic, Wu, his dad, and friends used to play with members of the Ewing Township Senior & Community Center Chess Club. The power of chess bridged the gap between the varying age groups and skill levels, but after being shut down for such a long time, the club struggled. In June, the only attendees were Wu, his dad Haibo, and club president Bong Ortiz. This motivated Wu to work with the club to establish quad tournaments — where each player engages in three

rounds against those of similar ranking. “It was actually a huge success, because there were around a dozen participants, which was incredible compared to the three people that were at the club meeting,” Wu said, with that collaboration still ongoing. Impact Chess also partnered with Arm in Arm, a Trenton nonprofit to help those in need receive basic care and employment, to donate 63 chess sets to Robbins Elementary School. After volunteers taught grades the basics of the game, 45 of those sets went to families, while 17 stayed behind, one for each classroom. As Impact Chess is still in its infancy, Wu’s priorities are to establish opportunities for outreach, instruction, and community building — at the moment, that means organizing events and recruiting members. Their national scale already includes leaders in Massachusetts, Boston, Michigan, and Northern California, while international operations have started in Toronto, Canada. Planning for the future, though, was made easier through connections closer to home. When Eric and Haibo first started playing in Princeton, they mainly stuck to school tournaments, but his father created a group chat for parents of local chess players in hopes that they could all share resources. Soon, the platform became a place for mentorship opportunities as well, now amassing about 2,000 members. With more than just guardians, the chat has allowed Wu to interact with chess players he idolized as a child. As most of them are now college students, they were more than open to the idea of offering their time and advice. Since Eric was able to build on these preexisting relationships, it was a natural transition for them to become involved. One of the advisors is Andrew Tang, a grandmaster and Princeton University student regarded as “one of the best bullet chess players in the world,” referring to a variant of chess with very short time controls such as hyperbullet (30 seconds per player) or ultrabullet (15 seconds per player). Other notable figures include Darwin Yang, a grandmaster getting his Ph.D. in economics at Princeton, Jennifer Yu, the 2019 U.S. Women’s Champion and woman grandmaster, and Jeffery Xiong, who “qualified for the grandmaster title at age 14, after he became the youngest champion in the history of the Chicago Open,” according to the website. While these younger players are Wu’s friends, two of the adult advisors are his coaches, renowned chess grandmasters Larry Christiansen and Gregory

Eric Wu is the founder of Impact Chess.

Kaidanov. Wu maintained that the beauty of chess lies in its inability to discriminate. “No matter what, when you play chess, you have 16 pieces on the board, the exact same as your opponent. That is something that is truly magical about chess, because I would say almost anyone could play it. Even if you’re playing against the world champion, for instance, technically you have a chance. You start out completely even, whereas in a lot of other activities, there are some limits,” he said, such as being athletic or tall in sports. “For chess, you just have to be willing to play it, to try to outthink your opponent.” If you lose, you do so with grace, Wu said, which is yet another merit to chess. “I’ve lost over 200 games before, and in a lot of things I do, I don’t really experience much failure — things are more in the gray area. But for chess, you either win or you lose. It doesn’t matter how close you were, it doesn’t matter how much time you spent, at the end, the result is” what it is, ending in either a victory, loss or a draw. Every month, Impact Chess is set to host Ewing Chess Club quads, as well as Chess in the Park Events, with the latter next scheduled for Sunday, August 7. “For Impact Chess, I definitely want to continue it even beyond high school, maybe even beyond college, because it’s something that I really love doing, and that’s what I think entrepreneurship means,” Wu said. “Entrepreneurship is the creation of value.” He will always play the game and aims to attend nationals, but Wu defines his professional path through the ability to expand on his imagination — where, by combining strategies with his passion, he is sure to make winning moves outside of chess. Central NJ Ballet Theatre Ballet Is Beautiful Alisha Cardenas believes ballet is the most beautiful thing on earth. It’s little surprise, then, that this love of ballet affects everything she does as the director of the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre. Now in her 11th year as the head of the region’s best ballet school, Cardenas focuses on finding and encouraging the dancer in everyone, within classical/contemporary and musical theater programs. The school teaches dancers ages 2 1/2 and up to reach their fullest — “Everybody deserves the best education” — without worrying about the competitive atmosphere some other schools spouse. “Winning trophies has its place,” Cardenas says, “but dance is art. How do you really measure artistry?” Cardenas and her staff treat every dancer as the individual she (or he, there are some boys in the class) is. Some need a little more attention, some want to work toward a career in dance, some just want to be part of something special. It all depends on the person and the goal. And Cardenas finds out what those goals are right away. “The first thing I always ask is, ‘What do you want to get out of us?’” she says. She expects all her dancers to give everything they can, but the instructors strive to build a communal school where everyone encourages and everyone is excited to see how everyone else is coming along. “There is no judgment between other students like there is at other studios. Ms. Alisha is very open and kind.

She really wants the best for her students!” says Shriya Varma, who has been dancing at CNJBT since 2011 and now is an alumna who was accepted to the Rutgers Mason Gross BFA Dance program. In 2018, the Cardenas family purchased 221 Broad Street to expand CNJBT’s growing student body. The space boasts impressive high ceilings and a sprung floor with an open lobby to view classes. The space is named “The Christine Cardenas Center for Performing Arts Education” in honor of her mother, who lost her battle with stage 4 colon cancer. “She was so proud of all of us. She always encouraged me to follow my dreams,” Cardenas says. “This space is a safe space for

young artist and dreamers.” Currently, the CNJBT is enrolling students for summer and this coming fall. This year’s ballets will be the comedic Ballet, Coppelia, June 2023. But first the holiday tradition. And yes, all students in the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre take part in “The Nutcracker” and “Coppelia.” In other words, things are busy for this classically trained dancer from Atlanta, Georgia, whose dream of becoming a director and owner of a school that stresses the fundamentals of ballet has been on track since 2011. Since opening, Cardenas has trained students who have been accepted to the following programs: American Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rock School For Dance Summer Intensive, Washington National Ballet Summer Intensive, The Bolshoi Summer Intensive, the Central PA Youth Ballet Summer Program, Joffrey Ballet Summer and Year round programs, Philly Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rocketts Summer Intensive, Princeton Ballet Trainee Program, and including collegiate dance major programs such as AMDA, Marymount Manhattan College Dance, Johns Hopkins, Kennesaw University, Stockton University, Rutgers Mason Gross, and Towson University Dance Major Programs among others. “I can honestly say that I was prepared for the demands of college dance. My professors gave me solid reviews while I attended,” says former CNJBT student Alexa Angelucci. Cardenas has also presented dancers for the prestigious Youth American Grande Prix in Philadelphia. All received high marks including Top 10 awards! They will be returning to the YAGP in November.

St. George Preschool A Safe Place for Growth

Alisha Cardenas of Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre But she’s not too busy to encourage new dancers, whether they dream of soaring across the Broadway stage or just want to experience the joy of ballet. The Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre is currently enrolling for all ages and levels for the 2022-2023 school year. “There’s something for everybody here,” Cardenas says. Central NJ Ballet Theatre, 221 Broad Street, Florence. www.cnjballet. com.

At St. George Preschool, we believe that each child has an innate drive for exploring, discovering, communicating, and learning. Our purpose is to provide a safe, warm, and nurturing environment for children to develop this innate drive to the fullest, and become life-long learners. Our goal is to help each child develop his/her individual interests, creativity and potential at their own pace by providing a wide variety of fun and age-appropriate activities and materials. In addition to the developmental goals in the areas of math, language, science, cognitive skills, motor skills, etc., stipulated by the state, the school aims to promote learning skills for life. At the same time, we aim to enhance the child’s social, moral, cultural and spiritual growth through group interactions, uplifting stories, cultural events and gentle guidance. Since “a healthy mind is in a healthy body” as the Ancient Greeks said, we provide a huge indoors gym and a beautiful play ground with regular physical activities.

We offer high quality academic English programs for Preschool (3 years and potty trained) and Pre-K (must be 4 years old by October 1 of school year). Early morning care, after care, and enrichment programs are also available. We are part of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and state licensed by the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services. Our experienced staff has

a passion building a foundation for a life-long love of learning. We are truly a family and we treat your children as such. For more information regarding our program, please visit our website. Stuart Country Day School Designed for Her: The Value of an All-Girls High School Education

by Dr. Marissa Muoio, Head of Upper School At Stuart, we deeply value an individualized approach to education. Here, your daughter is known, respected, and ready for success. Our enduring mission — “to prepare young women for lives of exceptional leadership and service within the framework of the Sacred Heart goals” — focuses on how we continue to define student achievement: producing educated women who are independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence. It drives everything we do and it’s how we live our life throughout campus. We know that a rigorous, independent education can change the world. We have done it ourselves with over 50 years of alumnae who have fervently lived out our school’s mission from the Peace Corps to

the board room to the director’s chair. From their early days here, our girls learn how to approach challenges with confidence while nurturing and celebrating their own individuality. Our students have a supportive environment in which to thrive, cultivate their minds and refine their voices while less burdened by the discrimination they continue to experience in the larger world. Here at Stuart, our exceptional high school program is intentionally tailored to the way girls learn best — through collaboration, discussion, and individualized attention. Our curriculum is dynamic, intentional and collaboratively constructed, offering

relevant classes and individualized opportunities that allow students to excel in many ways and stages of their learning. Whether Stuart students are experimenting in their STEM classes, competing on the playing field, leading a club meeting, editing a publication, or performing on stage, they are engaged in learning that is creative, collaborative, and inspired; students learn to think critically and to solve problems through multiple lenses no matter the task. When considering the difference between co-ed and single-gender education for your daughter, I encourage you to consider the

following: ● Does your daughter’s current school encourage her to find her voice? ● Does your daughter’s school inspire girls to pursue their passion even in areas traditionally dominated by men? ● Do the girls in your daughter’s school hold leadership positions? Are they class president? Are they the editor-in-chief of the yearbook? ● Do they value girls’ athletic teams as much as the boys’ teams? We know that the results of an all-girls upper school experience are remarkable. Our Stuart students continue to impress with their college matriculations and choices that are not only exceptional and competitive among peer schools but are a genuine reflection of students’ individual talents and career aspirations that have been nurtured by faculty and staff that truly knows their students .” At Stuart, she is known ... she is confident ... and she is unstoppable. Come join us to learn more.” Stuart Country Day School, 1200 Stuart Road, Princeton. 609-9212330. www.stuartschool.org. See ad, page 11.

Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies – some are the result of a disease like diabetes, while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still others are the result of an injury or compression on the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing that their symptoms may be due to Peripheral Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get worse, including numbness, burning or tingling sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment options have been limited to a small assortment of pain medications, which can lead to further issues. Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.

Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell Earns ‘A’ Grade for Quality from The Leapfrog Group Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. This national distinction recognizes Capital Health’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital. “Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell is home to many innovative services, such as our Cancer Center, the Josephine Plumeri Birthing Center and Regional Perinatal Center, and minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System,” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO, Capital Health. “By earning an ‘A’ from the Leapfrog group, residents in our community can be assured of our continuing status as a health care leader in the region.” “Capital Health is committed to improving quality and safety outcomes throughout our organization,” said Dr. Mark Arcaro, acting vice president of Clinical Performance at Capital Health. “And while this recognition validates our efforts, we are always looking ahead

to make sustained improvements and continue to meet and exceed national standards of care.” The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. “As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Capital Health for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”

The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework for Capital Health to maintain its high quality of patient care through various programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care, including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, life-long follow-up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care. When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient-centered services including psycho-social support and a patient navigation process that seeks to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life.

As a CoC-accredited cancer center, Capital Health takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires individualized care among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.

McCARTHY continued from Page 10 on U.S. tracks. It was not what one would call a normal life, however. “It was a funny time to go somewhere new and meet everyone wearing their mask,” he recalled. “It was kind of like meeting people twice after they take their mask off. But I was just lucky to get over and drive.” Once he finally got moving, McCarthy got 820 drives; winning 112 and earning $1,733,252, which was pretty good all things considered. McCarthy said he had low expectations and just figured he would stick it out long enough to see if he could make a living. “It was a lot of just learning to adapt,” he said. “I was still pretty new to learning this racing style here. I was really fortunate that people gave me opportunities to get going. I just had to try and adapt as quickly as I could and make the most of it. “It was very overwhelming that first year of moving to a new country. There were a lot of logistical sides of things to organize to set your life up here and try to get going again. And on top of that; handle the racing stuff as well. I had some great people around me that really helped and definitely made the process a lot easier.” Two of those people were his brother Andy and trainer Daley. Although the brothers race against each other on a regular basis, there is never a sibling rivalry as Todd says, “We just go to work and do our thing.” Daley, a fellow Aussie, was a great help to all three brothers when they came to the U.S. (Luke only raced here in 2009). Driving Daley’s horse to victory in the North America Cup made it that much greater. “It was really special,” McCarthy said. “Since I’ve come over here, there’s been a lot of great trainers that have taken me on and given me some great opportunities, and Noel’s got a lot of history with our family. He got Andy to come over and Luke followed suit for a little while and Noel was there to help out. He’s done the same for me, he’s just been phenomenal

Driver Todd McCarthy with Pebble Beach, the horse he rode to the winner’s circle in the North America Cup at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Canada on June 18, 2022. to our family so that was really special to win it with his horse.” Daley, who is one of sport’s top trainers, is not surprised at Todd’s success. “From the time I saw him in a race bike as a teenager, he looked like he had ‘It,’” Daley said. “He was an immediate success down home, and it was no surprise that he hit the ground running when he arrived here.” McCarthy has not only made an impression with his talent, but with his demeanor as well. Trainer Miriam Kraemer, a 2011 Bordentown High School grad, is impressed with McCarthy’s personality and sportsmanship. “He’s definitely made a name for himself, when he first came here people wanted him to drive horses because he was doing good back home,” said Kraemer, now based in Delaware. “But he just seems very humble. He talks respectfully

to people. His head’s not all blown up like some of ’em. “And he’s not one of those drivers that comes off hooting or hollering about driving (a bad horse). Some drivers come

off a little hot and sour if the horse didn’t perform like they like it to. I’ve heard him come off and (tell the trainer) to maybe change this or that. He gives insight to the horse, so I like that.” Winning the USHWA’s Rising Star Award was a pleasant surprise for McCarthy; “something I never expected.” Awards like that can sometimes put pressure on a young driver, but he says he doesn’t worry about it. “I never think about things much like that,” he said. “I don’t think it’s changed much. I’ve always been pretty good like that in life to stay away from that stuff. I just try to stay as grounded as I can and focus on the task ahead.” McCarthy has some big races ahead in August and September and is looking forward to some Grand Circuit races in Kentucky. He is also driving a few horses that could show up in the Hambletonian, the sport’s pre-eminent race. Between races, he will continue to be the guy walking around Bordentown with an Australian accent. “I used to get asked about that a lot, but I’ve learned to say certain things when I’m ordering them, so it probably makes them think I’m faking the Aussie accent,” he said with a laugh. “I still get people asking quite a bit, but it’s nice. Everyone has been friendly.”

Faculty consisting of caring instructors and counselors were the primary force of guidance for assuring a favorable appraisal of each cadet. These values remained consistent through time. In 1884, board and tuition for an academic school year cost $260, and enrollment was less than 100 students. Services provided for living on campus included laundry cleaning, instruction in military tactics, and the proper care of firearms. Cadets had to furnish their own bibles, dictionaries, towels, clothes bags, bed linens and blankets with personal identification. Extracurricular activities such as sports, music, art, and even religious worship were highly promoted and encouraged. The four-year program of study for college preparation consisted of arithmetic, Latin grammar, and outlines of history for the first year; algebra and Latin and Greek grammar for the second year; geometry and Latin prose composition for the third year; and mathematics, Roman history, and Latin and Greek prose composition for the fourth year. These programs were in addition to science courses, electives, and sports. The bugle sound of “First Call” began the day. In contrast, by 1970 board and tuition for an academic school year cost $3,600, and enrollment averaged 300 cadets. The faculty comprised at least 30 teachers on the immaculate 75-acre campus. The four-year program of study for college preparation consisted on algebra, Latin, Earth Science, and typewriting for the first year; geometry, mechanical drawing, biology, and modern history for the second year; public speaking, trigonometry, economics, and advertising for the third year; and analytical geometry and calculus, physics, sociology, and business administration for the fourth year. The last three years also included the study of foreign languages such as French, Spanish, and German. From 1932 to 1968, the embodiment of the school was not a structure or a motto

but rather one remarkable man: Dr. Harold Morrison Smith (1888-1971). Beginning with his tenure as dean, his guiding wisdom and compassion shaped the nature of the cadets and the institute until his retirement as president and headmaster. His belief that “everyone to someone is a beacon” was a moral code that he demonstrated daily with personal conviction. Despite the institute’s reputation for academic excellence, the anti-military sentiment from the endless and unpopular Vietnam War curtailed its enrollment and placed a heavy burden on its finances. In 1972, a decision was made to merge the school with the Lenox School in Massachusetts in order to ensure its survival. However, it proved to be ineffective, and administrators had no choice but to permanently shut down the school in 1973. Although the Bordentown Military Institute no longer remains, its legacy continues in the hearts and minds of those that attended and their families. In 1895, the great English novelist, short-story writer, poet, and Nobel Prize Laureate Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) wrote his most famous poem, If. It was a powerful poem about challenges faced through life. Its message seems appropriate when compared to the principles of the Bordentown Military Institute. …If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings — nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it And — which is more — you’ll be a Man, my son!
