James Webb Space Telescope a family legacy for local artist BY JOE EMANSKI A proud NASA stunned stargazers the world over on July 12, when it shared some of the first, best images to be taken by the powerful new James Webb Space Telescope. The images are said to offer astronomers and astrophysicists the best look yet at our universe

and everything in it. Among the crowd at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland were many NASA scientists, engineers, technicians and project managers, as well as their counterparts from the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency and representatives from Northrop Grumman, the primary contractor responsible for

construction of the telescope. Also on hand was Hopewell’s Jim Webb — son of James E. Webb, after whom the telescope is named. James Webb was the administrator of NASA from 1961 through 1968, the period during which the space agency embarked on many of the most ambitious programs in its history, including See WEBB, Page 6

When DJ Hunt was 2 and a half years old, his parents Dave and Michele took him to the Motor Sports trade show in Oaks, Pennsylvania, and placed him in a scaled down version of a race car. “Ever since then, I never stopped asking them to race,” said the 2021 Hopewell Valley Central High graduate. “When I was younger, everything was a race. I wanted to be done first in everything.” DJ’s desire helped fulfill the hopes of Dave and Michele, who would attend races at the nowdefunct Flemington and East Windsor tracks. Dave would constantly work on cars in his youth and wanted to get into racing, but lack of funding made it tough. “When my parents decided to have a kid, they agreed, probably before I was even born, that if he wants to race, let’s do it,” Hunt said. He wanted it all right, and has been doing it every year since age 4-½. Hunt is in his fourth season of DIRTcar racing on Saturday nights at the New Egypt Speed-

way. He’s in his second year racing Modifieds, which is the track’s top level. As of July 17, DJ was 13th out of 55 racers in the point standings, and was one of just five Modified drivers to win a race this season. That came on June 5, when Hunt notched his first career Modified win in a somewhat different manner. Ryan Conrad had apparently won the race, with Hunt taking second. But Conrad was disqualified after a post-race review led race officials to conclude that his car did not adhere to equipment rules. That gave DJ the victory and, although he missed out on the thrill of coming across the line first, he wasn’t complaining. “That was a big one for us,” Hunt said. “It was still exciting but it could have been a lot more exciting, to cross the line first and have all the fans still there, and to be able to go out right after you win and be in Victory Lane,” he says. “Luckily we still got to go out in Victory Lane before the night was over. We still got to experience a lot of really good things. It wasn’t instant gratification, it was a little delayed, but we’ll take it any way we can get it. That was the golden moment of the career so far. That was the one we always wanted to win. Before I even raced, when I was two and three, I was going to See HUNT, Page 8

This video was then offered, along with the written proposal and presentation, as the students’ official entry to the challenge. “I applaud our students’ efforts and unwavering commitment to ensuring that the district is moving forward in our sustainability mission and goals. We pledge to work with our students and the greater community and to take steps toward doing our part in protecting our planet,” district superintendent Rosetta Treece said in a media release. Senior Abigail Rise said she was honored to have been able to participate in the challenge. “Completing the climate action proposal and presentation with the other leaders of the Youth Environmental Society and with help from the amazing teachers and administrators we have at Hopewell Valley has absolutely been one of my greatest accomplishments,” she said. New Jersey’s First Lady, Tammy Murphy, honored a team of students from Hopewell Valley Central High School’s Youth Environmental Society on June 8 with a first place award and a $2,500 grant for their submission to the New Jersey Student Climate Challenge. The students’ winning entry documented their process of researching and developing a proposal for climate action that they presented to the Hopewell Valley Regional School District Board of Education in March 2022. The team included HVCHS seniors Kevin Amon, Akhansha Ar vind, Annika Ault, Nadia Chasalow, Angelina Graf, Daphine Newton, and Abigail Rise, and their advisers, HVCHS teacher Carolyn McGrath and HVRSD director of STEM Scott Brettell. Atlantic City Electric, Exelon, the Drumthwacket Foundation, and Sustainable Jersey administered the New Jersey Student Climate Challenge, which included entries from schools across the state. The Youth Environmental Society students worked for several months to prepare their proposal, which included consultation with climate experts from Rutgers University, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the Watershed Institute. The students consolidated their findings into a 28-page document that they shared along with a summary presentation to the Board of Education at their March 21 public meeting. The proposal included the request that the Hopewell Valley School District commit to creating a formal climate action plan that would address areas including education, facilities and energy, transportation, education, food and waste, and resilience. Within those areas, students generated recommended actions that would result in significantly reduced environmental impacts for the school district over the next decade. Letter: Give township committee credit on lower property taxes Americans are experiencing inflation at a 40-year high of 9.1%. This means consumers will have to spend wisely and save where we can. However, that proves to be difficult, with prices at the gas pump remaining high and everyday food costs continuing to rise. But one thing Hopewell Township residents have going for us is that our property taxes are going down this year by about 2%. This serves as a financial respite for many of us. It is no secret that New Jersey taxes are among the highest in the country. So, for our community to be able to benefit from a decrease in property taxes, while most of the country has increasing rates, it’s safe to say that we are among the lucky ones. It’s important to acknowledge how we got here. Township Committee members, past and present, have worked in seeking to bring in new businesses to our area, specifically the biotech company, BeiGene, who will be moving into the old Hopewell BMS site. This move

will not only create new construction jobs and bring new research professionals to our area, but significant financial contributions will be made to our township by Beigene, leading to lower taxes for our residents. In addition, we are supported by committee actions such as a flat municipal rate, reduced debt, increase ratables, and new sources of revenue. Mayor Courtney Peters-Manning, Committee member David Chait, and other committee members have recently succeeded to bringing these endeavors to fruition, and I applaud them for their leadership. With all our everyday expenses increasing, I am glad that as a resident of Hopewell Township, I can rely on our elected officials to have our back when it comes to keeping our taxes low and our hard-earned dollars in our pockets. Harmful algal blooms are not caused by true algae, but by cyanobacteria that, in many ways, resemble and behave like algae. The cyanobacteria naturally occur in fresh water, and can proliferate to unhealthful levels in sunlight and hot weather, forming dense mats resembling pea soup or spilled paint. Elevated levels of nutrients from polluted stormwater runoff and hot temperatures create the perfect conditions for HABs to thrive. The Department of Environmental Protection has developed a color-coded health alert index to provide the public with guidance on suitable recreational activities in freshwater lakes and other water bodies impacted by harmful algal blooms. To view the DEP Harmful Algal Bloom dashboard, which indicates advisory and warning levels for local bodies of water, visit njdep.maps.arcgis.com. In addition, the Watershed Institute has published its 2022 StreamWatch Bacteria and Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Data Map. Monitoring is being used to keep an eye on several hot spots and to identify other bacteria problems quickly. Volunteers can opt to participate in one or more five-week monitoring sessions during the summer. He says it was an honor to be there when the first images were shown to the world. “I’m not sure I’d ever been in a room so full of ecstatically happy and proud people,” he told the Express via email. The telescope, seen as a successor of sorts to the Hubble Space Telescope, has been in development for decades. Initial planning began in the 1980’s, with a budget of $1 billion and a development timeline of 10 years. Instead it took more than 30 years, and approximately $10 billion, before the satellite was launched into space in December. Unlike Hubble, which is in low earth orbit, the JWST orbits the sun, one million miles from home. According to NASA, the JWST will observe parts of space and time never seen before — allowing scientists to

infrared and ultraviolet light and a sunshield the size of a tennis court, will enable it to capture images with much more detail

than Hubble ever could. Originally known as the Next Generation Space Telescope, it was renamed in honor of James

Webb back in 2002. Webb (1906-1992), a native of North Carolina, spent many years working in Washington, including in the State Department and the Bureau of the Budget. President John F. Kennedy appointed him to succeed Hugh Dryden as the second head of NASA in February 1961. That May, Kennedy gave his speech declaring that the United States would land a manned spacecraft on the moon and return it safely to the earth. From that point, it became Webb’s job to fulfill that promise. When Republican Richard Nixon won the presidential election in 1968, Webb, a Democrat, stepped down. Before leaving office in 1969, President Lyndon B. Johnson honored Webb with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, considered one of the highest civilian honors that can be given in the United States. Jim Webb admits that growing up, he was not overawed by his father’s prominent role in U.S. government and in NASA. “Honestly, because he was

my dad and this was his job, I didn’t really give it a lot of thought at the time. I suppose I was like most typical teenagers,” he said. “I went with him to Cape Kennedy for the launch of at least one of the Apollo missions. That was pretty cool.” He remembers NASA administrator Sean O’Keefe reaching out to his then 91-year-old mother, Patsy, in 2002 and asking for her permission to name the telescope in honor of his father. “She gave her blessing. However, she was also keenly aware that these projects do oftentimes go sideways, which this one did for a time. She was rightfully concerned about his name associated with a disaster,” Webb says. Expensive scientific projects often find themselves easy targets when NASA or Congress is looking to make budget cuts, and the JWST was no different. “It was a long and very difficult road, as no engineering project this sophisticated and complicated had ever been attempted. There were lots of setbacks, not the least of which

canceled. “It was very moving,” Webb said. “To see the pitch-perfect launch provided by the European Space Agency’s Arian 5 rocket, then to have it go on to

perfectly deploy while avoiding more than 300 points of possible failure, was truly impressive and a great relief.” Jim Webb, 75, grew up in Washington and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He settled in Hopewell in 1996. As an artist, he is known for his custom lamp designs. He says word of mouth among collectors generates the majority of interest in his work. He only makes a few lamps a month, with each lamp taking three to four months to complete. He also does some abstract sculpture when time allows. “When there is a break in lamp requests, I have the time to experiment with more abstract sculptural work, but honestly, of late, there hasn’t been a lot of time for that,” he said. He works out of his private studio at his home in Hopewell, where prospective customers can see examples of his work. In his senior year, Hunt was second on the team in tackles with 48. In lacrosse, he changed positions and became a stellar defender. His character was never in question. A look at social media shows that the 19-year-old gets a ton of support from the racing industry. “Any time he spoke, you listened,” football coach Dave Caldwell said in describing Hunt’s character. “He’s unique. In my 20 years coaching, he’s one of the top guys just because of his team-first attitude and his humbleness and his ability to communicate with his teammates. He’s a genuine kid who always gives a good effort, either on the field or on the track. A lot of that goes back to his parents. If you look at Dave and Michele, they’re phenomenal people.” The couple got Hunt started at age 4-½ in Quarter Midget racing. That involves driving a Go Kart with a roll cage over it and containing a small Briggs and Stratton motor. DJ raced predominantly in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, but traveled as far

When you’re that young, they just kind of teach you the basics. You can’t go

super fast, nothing crazy.” At age 11, his next stop was the 600 Xcel level, which is a Dirt Modified, half scale car that contains a Suzuki street engine. Hunt had some success racing dirt tracks across Pennsylvania and New York, but had trouble getting onto the Bridgeport track in South Jersey because he needed

special approval from the state police. All NJ drivers need that until they turn 18. Hunt became the youngest driver in New Jersey history to get approval at age 14, and became the youngest in the state to win a race at that level. ”When we finally got the approval to go out and win one, it was kind of awesome

to show that kids can race,” he said. In 2019, at age 15, Hunt began running at New Egypt. He started in the Crate Modifieds, where each car has a crate motor that can contain no more than 350 horsepower. During his rookie year, Hunt won three Crate races, and in 2020 he was winless, but had three top-five finishes. Last year, he moved up to Modifieds, but was not expecting much at the track’s highest level. “I think we had a couple top fives,” Hunt said. “That was more of a learning year for us. We’re racing against people who have been in the sport for years. But for us, it was trying to figure out everything. We weren’t expecting to go out to win a race. We wanted to learn and build on where we were.” His improvement has continued this year as witnessed by his top 15 placement in the point standings in mid-July. Because of his job as a Snap-On Tools sales rep, however, Hunt will miss some weekends, and won’t be able to compete for a high finish. Yet he will still race as much as possible, if only to give Caldwell and HVCHS track and field coach Aaron Oldfield something to do with their Saturday nights. “Aaron and I went last year, and he was a guest in another person’s car for a heat,” Caldwell said. “DJ started in 40th place and finished in the teens, and he shouldn’t have, he was so far back. He’s always been a competitor and always been a respectful competitor who’s appreciative of the opportunity to compete. He’s unique.” It all starts with his parents. Michele is considered “the boss,” and the two men follow her orders. Dave and DJ do “about 95 percent of the work” on the engine, and get help from some other guys at the track. “The Modifieds are as high as we can get in local dirt racing without taking it to almost a full-time job,” Hunt said. “We spend hours together as a family every week; and we have ever since I was five years old. Whether it’s working on the car; the travel together, it has definitely brought us together as a family.” Hunt also praises his sponsors, whose backing makes the whole thing work. In looking back at his career, Hunt feels that playing high school sports has helped him when it comes to racing. “Once we got to the 600s, it became a little more physically demanding, your arms get tired easier,” he said. “I think playing sports like football and lacrosse gave me a little more stamina, it gave me the strength that I needed in the car.”

DJ also feels it helped with his mindset on the track. “There’s a lot of mental focus that goes into it,” he said. “Coach Caldwell gave me a lot of training over the years for being mentally tough and it gives me a lot of help in the race car being able to focus. Like he would say, when something happens, bounce back and flush it. Move on to the next play. That definitely helped on the track.” Hunt actually put his games before his races while in high school. “I wouldn’t change what I did for the world because I loved playing sports,” he said. “It brought me together with people in school outside of racing. I think playing football set me up a lot better for life because you learn so much more about yourself and how you can apply that to real life.” “Real life” now involves going an average of 104 mph around a quarter-mile track, which calls for a lot of reaction time. “You’re always reacting,” said Hunt, who has gotten in a few crashes, but nothing major. “My thing is, you gotta go where the other cars aren’t. If everybody’s at the bottom you gotta go to the top. If everybody’s at the top you gotta pass cars on the bottom. If you just follow you’re never gonna move forward. And we’re going sideways too (during skids) so it makes it tricky. It’s like Lightning McQueen (of the movie Cars) says: you gotta turn right to go left.” Overall, Hunt is moving straight ahead when it comes to racing. He doubts he will go to a higher level due to financial restrictions, but feels he will be dirt racing for quite some time. “Right now,” he said, “I can’t see life without it.” That’s probably because he has never had a life without it.

Jack Demareski, son of Roger and Kris Demareski of Pennington, recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. A graduate of Hopewell Valley Central High School, Demareski earned a bachelor of science degree in Marine Engineering Systems, and a commission in the U. S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine. Demareski, a former quarterback for the CHS football team, was also a defensive back on the U.S.M.M.A. football team. The United States Merchant Marine Academy is one of five U.S. federal service academies. It educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers to serve the nation during peace and war. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their congress member or senator. Demareski was nominated by Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. All U.S.M.M.A. graduates incur an obligation to serve the United States. The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine — manned exclusively by American mariners — is essential for securing the country’s commerce in peacetime and delivering war fighters, weapons, and military supplies in times of conflict. The majority of “Kings Pointers” serve for eight years as Navy reservists in the Strategic Sealift Officer Program, while working aboard U.S. flag vessels; others will serve on active duty in our nation’s armed forces. Demareski will fulfill his commitment as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Transfixed by the boards in front of them, a group of youthful participants with smiles and concentrated stares faced off against a single player playing 19 simultaneous games against them. For two hours, the focus was on chess. Out of the 25 total children who joyously faced off against National Master Winston Ni, only three lasted until a technical draw was announced. This was a busy day for Ni, but also for Eric Wu, the founder of nonprofit Impact Chess, the organization responsible for hosting their first ever “Chess in the Park” event on July 10 at Princeton’s Turning Basin Park. Wu, a four-time NJ state grade champion, wanted to give the children who assembled “an experience, a memory,” of chess for them to leave with. He noted the enthusiastic reactions of the younger players as Ni — who is also the director of community engagement for Impact Chess, a rising senior at Princeton Day School, and the 2018 National K-9 Cham-

Wu said the day, which steadily grew in size and spirit over four hours, exceeded his expectations. Explaining that “the mission of Impact Chess is to spread chess to those who would benefit from it the most,” Wu acknowledged that while the game can help anyone, the nonprofit mainly focuses on children and seniors. For children, he added, there are positives in “inspiring them, giving them a hobby or passion they can pursue, which helps them a lot later in life as they

Wu has spent this year advocating for the advancement of chess, officially registering the nonprofit organization in January, 2022. According to its website, Impact Chess has raised $1,330 and impacted 100 people through attendance at events and donations. But before chess came into Wu’s life, there was Go. “When I was very young, and I lived in China, the popular board games were Go and Chinese chess,” said Wu, who usually played with his father, Haibo. Go is also strategy-based, but features a larger board with an increased number of moves and pieces — chess has 20 starting possibilities to Go’s 361, and instead of representing hierarchical ranks as chess pieces do, Go stones are rounded — with the objective being to take up as much of the board, or territory, as possible. Born in San Francisco, Wu frequently moved back and forth between California and China until his family relocated to Princeton in the summer before second grade. There, he noticed that chess dominated the world of thinking board games, so his days of Go stopped. From the day he signed up for chess summer camp at Princeton Academy, right next to the Princeton Day School he would later attend, it was obvious that Wu’s future would be heavily influenced by chess and its principles. “Chess has taught me a lot, and throughout the process I felt my own growth. I became better at chess, and I also met new people, so that’s why I’ve been playing ever since,” he said, adding that chess helped him explore creativity, strategic thinking, and how to remain calm under pressure. Wu, 16, has lived in Princeton for nearly half of his life, but he is also a rising junior at Phillips Exeter Academy, a private boarding school in New Hampshire. His chess rating is around 2,000 — what he describes as“expert level” — and he is also in the top 100 for his age in the United States. Yet entrepreneurship is more of his current focus. The idea for Impact Chess came from a late-night phone call with a friend, where Wu, still in Exeter, found himself reminiscing about past life experiences. “Thinking back, I realized that a lot of the decisions I made were perfectly what would have led me to where I am today. I was able to, in a lot of different situations, find the best thing for myself and also others,” he explained, linking that to his deep understanding of chess, where high level players regularly think

several moves ahead. “At that moment, I really felt that I was blessed by the game of chess, [and] I thought I should definitely give this to other people. There’s so many ways that chess can help.” Wu knew that gearing programming towards students, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities, could result in “a brighter future” changed by the mutual celebration of chess. “In today’s society, political polarization is almost at an all-time high. Chess teaches us so much about perspective, strategic thinking, and removing emotions from judgment — all those things that could definitely just help people think more rationally, more sympathetically. I really feel like chess is just a great tool that helps people think about so many different things, and I wanted to share that with others,” Wu said. A renewed interest in the game, due in part to both the pandemic and the success of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” was another factor in making the dream of bringing chess to new audiences possible. The sale of physical chess sets rose, as did the rate of female players who identified with the show’s lead. Online platforms such as Chess.com exploded, as people were inspired by not just media, but the chance of escaping isolation, as many chose boards over boredom. Twitch, which has had a partnership with Chess.com since 2018, streamed matches and tournaments live. While Wu appreciated that the popularity of chess increased, a downside was that “because of the pandemic, many tournaments, events, in-person lessons, and classes all had to be canceled. So even though the pandemic has helped this surge and chess playing in general, it really harmed the in-person experience of the over-the-board tournaments, and the United States Chess Federation events.” Wu continued that “these closures, and overall, the harm that COVID has caused,” all factored into the message of Impact Chess — not just to expand the game’s reach, but “to try to heal these communities back together,” he said. Prior to the pandemic, Wu, his dad, and friends used to play with members of the Ewing Township Senior & Community Center Chess Club. The power of chess bridged the gap between the varying age groups and skill levels, but after being shut down for such a long time, the club struggled. In June, the only attendees were Wu, his dad Haibo, and club president Bong Ortiz. This motivated Wu to work with the club to establish quad tournaments — where each player engages in three

rounds against those of similar ranking. “It was actually a huge success, because there were around a dozen participants, which was incredible compared to the three people that were at the club meeting,” Wu said, with that collaboration still ongoing. Impact Chess also partnered with Arm in Arm, a Trenton nonprofit to help those in need receive basic care and employment, to donate 63 chess sets to Robbins Elementary School. After volunteers taught grades the basics of the game, 45 of those sets went to families, while 17 stayed behind, one for each classroom. As Impact Chess is still in its infancy, Wu’s priorities are to establish opportunities for outreach, instruction, and community building — at the moment, that means organizing events and recruiting members. Their national scale already includes leaders in Massachusetts, Boston, Michigan, and Northern California, while international operations have started in Toronto, Canada. Planning for the future, though, was made easier through connections closer to home. When Eric and Haibo first started playing in Princeton, they mainly stuck to school tournaments, but his father created a group chat for parents of local chess players in hopes that they could all share resources. Soon, the platform became a place for mentorship opportunities as well, now amassing about 2,000 members. With more than just guardians, the chat has allowed Wu to interact with chess players he idolized as a child. As most of them are now college students, they were more than open to the idea of offering their time and advice. Since Eric was able to build on these preexisting relationships, it was a natural transition for them to become involved. One of the advisors is Andrew Tang, a grandmaster and Princeton University student regarded as “one of the best bullet chess players in the world,” referring to a variant of chess with very short time controls such as hyperbullet (30 seconds per player) or ultrabullet (15 seconds per player). Other notable figures include Darwin Yang, a grandmaster getting his Ph.D. in economics at Princeton, Jennifer Yu, the 2019 U.S. Women’s Champion and woman grandmaster, and Jeffery Xiong, who “qualified for the grandmaster title at age 14, after he became the youngest champion in the history of the Chicago Open,” according to the website. While these younger players are Wu’s friends, two of the adult advisors are his coaches, renowned chess grandmasters Larry Christiansen and Gregory

Kaidanov. Wu maintained that the beauty of chess lies in its inability to discriminate. “No matter what, when you play chess, you have 16 pieces on the board, the exact same as your opponent. That is something that is truly magical about chess, because I would say almost anyone could play it. Even if you’re playing against the world champion, for instance, technically you have a chance. You start out completely even, whereas in a lot of other activities, there are some limits,” he said, such as being athletic or tall in sports. “For chess, you just have to be willing to play it, to try to outthink your opponent.” If you lose, you do so with grace, Wu said, which is yet another merit to chess. “I’ve lost over 200 games before, and in a lot of things I do, I don’t really experience much failure — things are more in the gray area. But for chess, you either win or you lose. It doesn’t matter how close you were, it doesn’t matter how much time you spent, at the end, the result is” what it is, ending in either a victory, loss or a draw. Every month, Impact Chess is set to host Ewing Chess Club quads, as well as Chess in the Park Events, with the latter next scheduled for Sunday, August 7. “For Impact Chess, I definitely want to continue it even beyond high school, maybe even beyond college, because it’s something that I really love doing, and that’s what I think entrepreneurship means,” Wu said. “Entrepreneurship is the creation of value.” He will always play the game and aims to attend nationals, but Wu defines his professional path through the ability to expand on his imagination — where, by combining strategies with his passion, he is sure to make winning moves outside of chess. Central NJ Ballet Theatre Ballet Is Beautiful Alisha Cardenas believes ballet is the most beautiful thing on earth. It’s little surprise, then, that this love of ballet affects everything she does as the director of the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre. Now in her 11th year as the head of the region’s best ballet school, Cardenas focuses on finding and encouraging the dancer in everyone, within classical/contemporary and musical theater programs. The school teaches dancers ages 2 1/2 and up to reach their fullest — “Everybody deserves the best education” — without worrying about the competitive atmosphere some other schools spouse. “Winning trophies has its place,” Cardenas says, “but dance is art. How do you really measure artistry?” Cardenas and her staff treat every dancer as the individual she (or he, there are some boys in the class) is. Some need a little more attention, some want to work toward a career in dance, some just want to be part of something special. It all depends on the person and the goal. And Cardenas finds out what those goals are right away. “The first thing I always ask is, ‘What do you want to get out of us?’” she says. She expects all her dancers to give everything they can, but the instructors strive to build a communal school where everyone encourages and everyone is excited to see how everyone else is coming along. “There is no judgment between other students like there is at other studios. Ms. Alisha is very open and kind.

She really wants the best for her students!” says Shriya Varma, who has been dancing at CNJBT since 2011 and now is an alumna who was accepted to the Rutgers Mason Gross BFA Dance program. In 2018, the Cardenas family purchased 221 Broad Street to expand CNJBT’s growing student body. The space boasts impressive high ceilings and a sprung floor with an open lobby to view classes. The space is named “The Christine Cardenas Center for Performing Arts Education” in honor of her mother, who lost her battle with stage 4 colon cancer. “She was so proud of all of us. She always encouraged me to follow my dreams,” Cardenas says. “This space is a safe space for

young artist and dreamers.” Currently, the CNJBT is enrolling students for summer and this coming fall. This year’s ballets will be the comedic Ballet, Coppelia, June 2023. But first the holiday tradition. And yes, all students in the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre take part in “The Nutcracker” and “Coppelia.” In other words, things are busy for this classically trained dancer from Atlanta, Georgia, whose dream of becoming a director and owner of a school that stresses the fundamentals of ballet has been on track since 2011. Since opening, Cardenas has trained students who have been accepted to the following programs: American Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rock School For Dance Summer Intensive, Washington National Ballet Summer Intensive, The Bolshoi Summer Intensive, the Central PA Youth Ballet Summer Program, Joffrey Ballet Summer and Year round programs, Philly Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rocketts Summer Intensive, Princeton Ballet Trainee Program, and including collegiate dance major programs such as AMDA, Marymount Manhattan College Dance, Johns Hopkins, Kennesaw University, Stockton University, Rutgers Mason Gross, and Towson University Dance Major Programs among others. “I can honestly say that I was prepared for the demands of college dance. My professors gave me solid reviews while I attended,” says former CNJBT student Alexa Angelucci. Cardenas has also presented dancers for the prestigious Youth American Grande Prix in Philadelphia. Capital Health Employee Education Program Awards Four Full Tuition Scholarships to Rider University Andrew Coates of Levittown, Pennsylvania is the son of Kim Coates, a registered nurse and practice lead at Capital Health Occupational Health Center. Andrew is a graduate of Calvary Christian Academy of Philadelphia and his major is communication studies, with a minor in broadcast journalism. He intends to pursue a career in media. Gloria Owusu of Hamilton, New Jersey is the daughter of Samuel Acheaw, Care Management nurse at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell. Gloria is a graduate of Hamilton High School West and is an accounting major in Rider’s Department of Accounting, which is one of only 2% of programs worldwide with accreditation from the AACSB International.

Capital Health has announced four winners of full-tuition scholarships to Rider University as part of an employee education benefits partnership with the university. The scholarship winners are immediate family members of Capital Health employees and include Rachel Burnett (education), Andrew Coates (communication studies), Gloria Owusu (accounting), and Johannah Stevenson (STEM). In order to be eligible for the scholarships, candidates or their immediate family members must be full-time, non-union employees of Capital Health for at least one year and meet additional eligibility requirements. Capital Health’s partnership with Rider launched in 2020 when Capital Health Medical Group began overseeing the university’s Student Health Center and providing primary care health services to students and employees. “On behalf of Capital Health, I’m pleased to congratulate the inaugural winners of our full-tuition scholarships to Rider University” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO of Capital Health. “As our relationship with Rider grows, we’ll offer similar scholarship opportunities annually as part of a broader education benefits program for our employees and their families. Johanna Stevenson of Lumberton, New Jersey is a graduate of Rancocas Valley Regional High School. Daughter of Robert Stevenson, tech specialist at the Sleep Center at Capital Health – Hamilton, Johanna plans to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in order to pursue a career as a secondary STEM teacher (grades 9 – 12) in a “high need” school district. Undergraduate students (including those transferring to Rider University or enrolling in a continuing studies program) are eligible to receive these scholarships, which are awarded for four consecutive years or until completion of the academic program. Scholarship recipients must be full-time students, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and be students in good standing with Rider University at all times during the course of their enrollment. Full-tuition scholarships do not include room, board, or other related costs, such as textbooks. Capital Health’s employee education benefits program also features a 50% tuition discount agreement with Rider University for nonunion employees and their immediate family members (cannot be combined with full-tuition scholarships). Other Rider education benefits for Capital Health employees include an application fee waiver; free, unofficial evaluation of transfer credits prior to applying; and a Rider academic advisor to help plan their schedule. Graduate student applicants can request a free evaluation of transfer credits as well as course and GMAT/GRE waivers and exclusive certificate programs for Capital Health employees are currently in development.

She was the first Hispanic appointed to the bench in Mercer County and the second Latina ever appointed to the bench in the State of New Jersey. During her tenure through the administrations of various New Jersey governors, Garcia served as vice-chair of the Decision Making Processes and Procedures Committee, an active member of the Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Committee, and as the executive branch representative on the State Council of the Interstate Commission for Juveniles. She previously served Capital Health as secretary of the Capital Health Hospital Board of Directors. REV. JOHN TAYLOR has been the pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Trenton, New Jersey since 2009. He is president of the Trenton Capital City Community Coalition (CCCC) and is a board member at the Old Barracks Museum in Trenton. Rev. Taylor serves with the Interfaith Advisory Council for the State of New Jersey and is a certified counselor of Marriage Savers, Inc. He also received training in Church Management and Tax Financial Services (Clergy, Tax & Law). Taylor is a member of the Coalition for a New Community, the Covenant Partner’s Association of Trenton, the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of NJ, the Middlesex Central Baptist Association of NJ, Inc., and Faith In New Jersey. Rev. Taylor is also the chaplain for the New Jersey State Police.

DR. SHIRNETT WILLIAMSON is the medical director of Radiation Oncology Services at Capital Health, overseeing radiation oncology, CyberKnife, and brachytherapy. She is a former president of the American Cancer Society Board of Managers for Mercer County and the current chair of the Cancer Committee at Capital Health. She has served as a clinical assistant professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and helped develop the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Capital Health Hospital Board of Directors DR. PAUL CODJOE is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon with Mercer-Bucks Orthopaedics. Dr. Codjoe was born in Accra, Ghana and came to the United States in 1989. Following his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he received his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. After completing his internship in general surgery and an orthopaedic surgery residency at Temple University Hospital, Dr. Codjoe was fellowship trained in sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia, where he focused on arthroscopic surgery and minimally invasive joint reconstructive procedures of the knee and shoulder. Dr. Codjoe specializes in sports medicine and shoulder and knee surgeries. He is also a member of many orthopaedic organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society, and Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society. DR. DOMINICK EBOLI was named medical director of the Bristol Myers Squibb Trauma Center at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in 2017 after serving as associate director since 2006. He has been an attending surgeon in general surgery, trauma, and surgical critical care at Capital Health since July 2000. Dr. Eboli is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and surgical critical care. He is a fellow to the American College of Surgeons and a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Critical Care Medicine of New Jersey, and a member of the State Trauma Advance Council. As chair of the Department of Surgery at Capital Health, he also sits on the Trauma Performance Improvement, Trauma Program Operational Process Performance, and Patient Safety committees.

CAPITAL HEALTH EARNS NATIONAL ACCREDITATION from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons renowned hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeon. “More importantly, it demonstrates to the communities we serve that our extraordinary team of medical specialists is right in their neighborhood and ready to provide the latest treatment options tailored to each patient’s unique needs.” Capital Health Cancer Center, located at Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, has received national accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). To earn accreditation for a three-year term, a cancer program must meet 34 quality care standards established by the CoC, be evaluated every three years through an extensive survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Capital Health last earned this accreditation in 2019.

The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework for Capital Health to maintain its high quality of patient care through various programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care, including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, life-long follow-up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care. When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient-centered services including psycho-social support and a patient navigation process that seeks to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life.

As a CoC-accredited cancer center, Capital Health takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires individualized care among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.

Interventional Pain Management Specialist Joins CAPITAL INSTITUTE FOR NEUROSCIENCES DR. ADISON WESELOH, a fellowship trained interventional spine and musculoskeletal medicine specialist, recently joined the Center for Pain Management at Capital Institute for Neurosciences. Dr. Weseloh and other providers at the Center focus on managing pain that originates with nerve damage or disease, trauma or injuries, cancer, headaches, musculoskeletal pain, head and facial pain, and back pain. Dr. Weseloh received his medical degree at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed fellowship training in interventional spine and musculoskeletal medicine. His training includes diagnosing and interventional (non-surgical) treatment of musculoskeletal and spine conditions using ultrasound and fluoroscopically-guided injections. Township secures $600K grant for 911 system upgrades Courtney Peters-Manning From the Township

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and seeing smoke pouring out of your neighbor’s home across the street. Picture witnessing a car accident when driving along Elm Ridge Road, or coming across a medical emergency while at a local restaurant. When you pick up the phone to dial 9-1-1 for help, you want to know that the emergency dispatch system on the other end of the line is equipped with the cutting-edge technology that will allow dedicated first responders to get to the scene with the utmost speed. I am thrilled to announce that Hopewell Township has been awarded $600,000 in grant money from the State of New Jersey to update our 911 system. The money will be used to replace equipment, update technology, and upgrade our current communication center itself. This will ensure the system complies with current standards and is able to expand as necessary into the future. When I approached township

administrator George Snyder about this grant application, he responded by tirelessly working with the office of Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson to fund this critical infrastructure need. With her support, along with the support of Sen. Shirley Turner and Assemblyman Anthony Verrelli, the application was approved, keeping Hopewell Valley residents safer now and into the future. The 911 system has been in use for more than 40 years. But while communications technology has evolved to include wireless phones, texting, video, and more, 911 systems have not always kept up. With this grant funding, we will be able to modernize the Hopewell Township system, which also serves both Pennington and Hopewell Borough through shared service agreements. This upgrade therefore will improve communication and collaboration Valley-

Endangered monarchs find safe harbor in HoVal Lisa Wolff

On July 21, the International Union for Conservation of Nature shared that they added the migratory monarch butterfly to its Red List of Threatened Species as endangered. Here in Hopewell Valley, there are plenty of meadows where you can see monarchs because local conservation groups and community activists have been aware of looming crisis and have encouraged public and private land owners to plant native wildflowers. Even so, we can and should do much more. Native milkweed is the sole food source for monarchs. FoHVOS has planted milkweeds at its open space preserves, helped every HVRSD school plant native milkweed in their gardens, and offer Valley locals a biannual opportunity to purchase native plants at wholesale prices. I am dedicating the rest of this column to sharing the natural beauty of birds, bees, and butterflies enjoying the presence native wildflowers. only speculate about his frustration at not having the opportunity to address prestigious symposia at Harvard Law. After the judge’s eternal preamble, our case was called. The daycare center was not present, and the case was decided against them by default. Time to celebrate? No. Time to figure out how to collect. We called the daycare center about paying up. The owner said, “I’m putting the check in the mail.” A week later we called again and were told that the owner was “in a meeting”

court officer. Months passed. We were cautioned by the court officer that the daycare might have moved their bank out of state, where it would be untouchable. As an alternative, if we could find a vehicle belonging to the daycare center, we could seize it in lieu of payment. I envisioned being arrested for lurking around the daycare parking lot, suspiciously inspecting cars. Finally, the court officer found the bank account and, indeed, the check was in the mail. It arrived in May 2022,

Shortly after filing suit, we received not only an acknowledgment from the small claims court, but also a letter from The People’s Court! Someone had decided that our case had the poignancy typical of daytime TV. but would call back. Both responses seemed like the buildup for some really funny joke. Neither the punchline nor the check ever arrived. Next, we contacted the court officer, whose role is to actually collect the money. However, we needed to know where the daycare center kept its cash. Fortuitously, a friend mentioned how he once brought suit and was able to refer to a check that he had previously received from the defendant. Fortunately, we still had a copy of the partial refund check. We passed on the bank’s name and account number to the

almost two years after the process had begun. For disdaining the legal process, the defendant ended up paying our filing fees. For the check not being in the mail and the phone call not being returned, they had to pay $100 to the court officer for recovering the funds. Perhaps the wheels of justice grind slowly, and perhaps justice delayed is justice denied. But perhaps another cliché about patience (or pigheadedness) being rewarded was sufficient consolation for almost two years of legal hassle. Robin Schore lives in Hopewell Borough.
