Local teen dances to the top Jonathan Ronen adds Dancer of the Year to his list of awards By Bill SaNserViNO

Robbinsville resident Jonathan Ronen—a dancer since he was five years old—was recently named teen dancer of the year by the Artistic Dance Exchange. Ronen, 14, received the award at ADE’s national event in Orlando, Florida, at the beginning of July. ADE is the only dance convention and competition in the United States to offer international exchange scholarship programs.

The organization is a platform for established, upcoming, and novice dancers to explore their artistic voice. As part of his award, Ronen gets to train with elite faculty for a year, and he will attend ADE conventions and competition events around the country in 2022 and 2023. He will receive two-night hotel stays in each tour city for the entire tour season. Ronen, who is a rising freshman at Robbinsville High School, said he feels “incredible blessed” to have won the award. His mother, Pamela, speaking for her son, said that “It is a dream come true (for Jonathan) to travel to cities for ADE’s 3-day

convention.” During the tour, he will assist the faculty by demonstrating choreography to the hundreds of dancers in attendance. “For him, this is the best way to spend his weekends—traveling, training in an array of genres with top notch faculty, and being part of a dance community that supports and guides his growth,” Pamela said. She added: “During non-dancing hours, he gets to learn the ins and outs of what goes on in dance conventions as he helps facilitate dance studios competition line up back stage, assists during award ceremonies and be part of welcomSee RONEN, Page 8

$25.7 million municipal budget includes small tax increase EdiTed By Bill SaNserViNO

Robbinsville rising senior Pat Kapp says the Ravens participation in Jersey City’s Hamilton Park League can only help when the regular season begins. For more on Kapp and the team, turn to page 12.

Robbinsville Township Council recently adopted the $25.7 million 2022 municipal budget. After nine consecutive years of either flat or reduced municipal taxes, this year’s spending plan contains a proposed municipal increase to 53.9 cents per every $100 of assessed value—up from 51.8 cents. That translates to an approxi-

mately $79 municipal increase per household in 2022. The average assessed home value in Robbinsville is $378,600. A penny in the Robbinsville tax rate is worth $265,905.75. Municipal taxes make up only 20 percent of a township resident’s overall tax bill. Schools accounted for 56 percent, Mercer County absorbed 21 percent, and the Mercer County Library and Mercer County Open Space taxes com-

bined for 3 percent in 2021. “This was probably the most difficult budget we’ve ever had, following an unprecedented two years dealing with the pandemic and all the challenges that came along with it,” said Mayor David Fried. “No one likes paying more taxes, and we did everything we possibly could to minimize it. Robbinsville has been a Mercer County leader in tax stabilizaSee AROUND TOWN, Page 3

We feel the extremely high quality of the services we offer, along with a year-over-year decrease in spending from 2021, help from the American Rescue Plan and over $700,000 in reduced debt, will help us stay on track moving forward.” Township services have increased nearly across the board, while spending was slashed by $289,000 from 2021 and overall Township debt reduced by $709,000. The $1.5 million in funds acquired via the American Rescue Plan Act is being earmarked for revenue replacement, including substantial pandemic-related losses in court costs and construction permit fees. Robbinsville Township also has been very aggressive in pursuing Federal, State and other grants. Robbinsville has secured over $1 million in funds from the state Department of Transportation, for road work, along with another $1.35 million FEMA grant to hire four new firefighters. Virtually the entire increase was comprised of increased costs in pension contributions, health insurance benefits and the purchase of a new fire engine ($879,000). “Budgets are always very challenging,

anyone who runs a household understands that all too well,” Council President Mike Cipriano said. “(Administrator) Joy (Tozzi), (CFO) Debbie (Bauer) and the other department heads have done another outstanding job, under extremely difficult circumstances, getting us to this place.”

During his tenure, Schnaudt has been instrumental in numerous department initiatives, has been a committed professional, a trusted firefighter and a valued member of the department. The Robbinsville Township Board of Education and the Robbinsville Public School District have a responsibility to our students, our residents, and our community. We respect and value all our teachers, staff, and administrators for their important work in educating our students. We also realize that an unsettled employment contract can have a toll on the school community, stakeholders, and employees. As you may be aware, the Robbinsville Education Association negotiations committee and its New Jersey Education Association representative held a public forum to discuss the status of negotiations on June 6. During that event and since that time, the REA and surrogates have made attempts at school board meetings, and public statements on social media and local newspapers, which have ranged from genuine issues to misleading assertions. Their use of improper comparison of salary guides and cherry-picked data points does not provide accurate apples to apples compensation analysis leading to patent falsehoods on the status of negotiations. While the intent may be merely to drum up intensity regardless of the facts, pushing people to believe things and act upon false information is detrimental to the cause of both the REA and the school district. Our teachers value the flexibility and autonomy that we offer at Robbinsville Schools. We appreciate that many of our teachers do not earn the income that they otherwise could outside education in the private sector, but they enjoy generous benefits related to health insurance, pension retirement benefits, and of course the great value in making a difference in a child’s education. We also have a highly admired and desired School District where people want to work and go to school. Simply put, Robbinsville has been and continues to be a great place to work, live and raise a family. While Robbinsville has aggregately less money to spend per pupil than any of its County counterparts, the REA and the Board have mutually agreed to fair and reasonable contracts for decades. In terms of salary, please consider that it is difficult and can be misleading to compare Robbinsville salaries with other districts because the number of “steps” varies. For example, Ewing has 21 steps, while Robbinsville has only 17.

Despite this complication, we know that Robbinsville Schools are very competitive and pay more in the beginning years of the guide compared to many other school districts. There are much more details on the salaries and guides and without getting bogged down in the details of salary guide examination and comparative district socioeconomics, there is a wealth of data that we are eager to share. To demonstrate these points for those that would be interested to spend time number crunching, please visit our ‘Fact and Fiction” page on the “Board of Education” page on the district website to see the salary comparisons and step guides across the districts in Mercer County. We acknowledge that more work needs to be done, yet despite that have made drastic increases, around 6% for the past three years of data, in our overall classroom spending in recent years. However, Robbinsville Public Schools are simply unable to spend as much as many neighboring school districts due to several long-standing factors. First, Robbinsville Public Schools have been underfunded by the state for more than a decade and though our schools have recently received increased amounts of state aid we are still significantly underfunded than most of our other school districts in Mercer County and across the state. Second, although we have been able to hold the school property tax rate flat in the last few years, the Robbinsville Public School property tax rate is high and remains higher than many of the other school districts in Mercer County. Simply put, the Robbinsville residents and taxpayers have been overcharged tens of millions of dollars for the past decade due to the State’s failure to fully fund districts such as Robbinsville. Additionally, the State of New Jersey has a 2% property tax levy cap that limits how much property taxes can go up each year, thereby making large yearly increases impossible without cutting other parts of the budget. If property taxes are the primary source of our Robbinsville school budget, and the annual property tax increase is capped by state law, then it means striking a balance between paying teachers and trying to avoid painful cuts to other parts of the school district budget that the community also values.

and unfair place to educate students. This is not a Board seeking to enrich shareholders at the expense of union workers. It is an unpaid volunteer Board of Robbinsville community parents and residents who care greatly about advancing the students and the community at large. This volunteer Board has been charged with the careful and responsible management of public money and ensuring a school district is well run. The balance of paying the staff fairly and ensuring continued employment while simultaneously maintaining and offering new programs and opportunities for students is a difficult task that the Board shoulders year after year. We believe that this is the goal of the REA as well. We are hopeful that reasonable minds prevail and that the upcoming mediation, at the REA’s request, can be a genuine opportunity for compromise with the outcome being a fair and reasonable contract that will benefit the staff, students, and school community. Then, rebuilding the relationship between the Board and REA can begin. Robbinsville School Board Negotiations Committee *** Editor’s note: The district released the following update on its website on July 18: “At mediation this evening, the Robbinsville Public Schools Board Negotiations Committee unilaterally increased its offer which is in line with the Mercer County average. The Robbinsville Education Association (REA) countered at 4.9%, which is more than 1.5% higher than the County average.” “While the Board is willing to continue to negotiate, the REA has not made realistic demands that would be possible without deep, painful cuts to staff and programming that would be to the detriment of our Robbinsville students. The Board is not willing to do that and will proceed to the process of fact finding where we believe a state fact finder will recommend a more reasonable settlement in line with the Mercer County average.”

ce le

While the Board of Education’s goal is to provide sufficient resources for its students, we are also tasked with being considerate of the community at large ability to pay. We recommend and encourage the REA and anyone who is interested to reach out to the State of New Jersey Governor’s office and local legislative representatives to request our fair share of State Aid. Notwithstanding these limiting factors, Robbinsville has the third-highest starting salary, consistently attracts high-quality teachers and educators, and is a magnet for parents that want the best educational experience for their children. We reject the false notion that teachers are leaving Robbinsville Schools more than other school districts throughout the state and nation. Based on Federal data eight percent of teachers leave the profession each year. When you consider that the same portion of educators shift schools, the overall annual turnover rate becomes 16% across the nation. Although nationally there has been an increase in teacher turnover, Robbinsville turnover rate in the last three years has been an average of 9% as well as increases in teachers who are deciding to pursue other professions, we believe strongly that Robbinsville is a highly sought-after place of employment. We have a high response rate (24.5 applicants per week since May 1, 2022) to our job openings and teachers coming to Robbinsville to work from districts including Montgomery, Branchburg, Trenton, Hamilton, Jackson, Haddonfield, Haddon Township, Hopewell, East Brunswick, and South Brunswick. Compared to neighboring school districts we often have a high fill rate for our openings and based on exit interviews we have conducted; salary has rarely been the main reason for teachers leaving. We anticipate settling this contract - as all past negotiations have settled - but cannot help but acknowledge the damage that has and is being done by publicly portraying the Board, and thereby the Robbinsville Public School District, as an uncaring, dishonest,

Jonathan Ronen of Robbinsville shows off his Dancer of the Year award. RONEN continued from Page 1 ing and finale ceremonies.” Ronen’s dancer of the year win is the latest in a list of accolades that he has accumulated over the years. Ronen has been training for the stage his whole life. Pamela said he would dance around as a toddler, and she knew she had to sign him up for lessons once he told her he wanted to do more with dance. He began his training at age 5 at Dance on Q in South Brunswick, taking classes in everything from jazz to lyrical. At age 6, he was asked to join the competition team, where he won a number of awards, including the Mr. Junior title award in three of the four competition events. That award is given to a student showing the best stage presence out of everyone in the entire competition— which could be upwards of a few hundred dancers. Competing and training at one studio wasn’t enough for Ronen, though. A year after he began at Dance on Q, he also started training with Princeton Dance and Theater and Princeton Youth Ballet. “I went looking for a summer camp for him and came across PDT’s Young Dancer’s camp,” Pamela said. “He went and it was just amazing—he absolutely loved it.”

At PDT, Ronen got to focus primarily on ballet—where the studio is American Ballet Theater certified—but also was able to choreograph and try other styles, as well. Maura Ryan, assistant director and primary teacher for the Young Dancers summer camp at PDT has said of Ronen: “He is bright and concentrates very hard. His creativity gives him a fearlessness that lets him choreograph without any reservation. There aren’t many students like Jonathan.” After PDT, Ronen performed in a ballet with PYB in 2014. Since then, he has performed in the December performances of “The Snow Queen” ballet where he got to see how a full-length ballet was put together. “He loves getting into character and telling a story with his movement,” Ryan said. “He is so expressive and has such great use of his body in order to tell a story.” This summer, aside from attending his camp at PDT and classes at Dance on Q, Ronen performed in a production of “Anything Goes” at Kelsey Theater. The dancer first received national attention in 2016, when he was an 8-yearold Sharon School student. He developed a five-minute choreographed piece called “The Math Dream,”

where he created costumes, props and an entire story to explain math equations. The dance starts by showing a student struggling with a math problem. He falls asleep into a dream about numbers. The dream ultimately helps the student solve the problem. In creating “The Math Dream” Ronen enlisted help from his brothers and parents, filmed a performance of the piece staged in his home and then entered it in the Robbinsville PTSA’s Reflections contest. Reflections is an arts recognition program for K-12 students, where students can interpret a theme using visual arts, photography, film, dance, music and literature. In 2015-16, the theme was, “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Ronen won the Robbinsville competition, and scored a Reflections Award of Excellence by the National PTA. He so impressed the national organization, in fact, that he earned an invitation in to receive his award in Orlando, Florida. He was one of only three students in his grade division to receive the honor, beating out more than 300,000 students from 8,000 schools in the United States. “I was really surprised when I won,” he said. “It was really exciting.” Pamela compares her son’s ability to create a story, like he did with “The Math Dream,” to watching the creative process and performing in “The Snow Queen” at PYB. It helps that Ronen has musical genes—Pamela studied cello seriously throughout her childhood, and still plays. She and husband Asaf—Ronen’s dad— also dance for fun, primarily Salsa and Merengue. Ronen’s twin brother, Benjamin, and older brother, Elan, are more interested in sports than dancing. They both enjoy mountain biking and hiking. But they, too, enjoy supporting their brother. In the years since “The Math Dream,” Ronen has continued to be a passionate artist focusing on dance. He trains in the styles of jazz, musical theater, contempo-

rary, tap, ballet and hip hop. He also continues to create choreography for fun and posts videos on his Instagram account—@jrjustbeyou. “He feels that nothing recharges me more than creating a story with his dance,” Pamela said. Ronen’s most viewed choreography is a contemporary piece from Billie Eilish’s Comet song with almost 10K views posted last summer. During middle school years, Ronen became a member of the Knicks City Kids dance team, dancing on the floor of the Madison Square Garden arena with crowds of 20 thousand during the Knicks basketball team home games. “Jonathan always felt it was so cool to have a MSG employee badge and getting paid for doing what he loves—dance,” Pamela said. Ronen has been participating in ADE for a number of years now. The program has two levels—Prodigy and the more advanced Noble. To attain the Noble level, a Prodigy dancer competes at ADE’s national event in Orlando. Dancers who excel over five days of training, competition and auditions earn the Noble dancer title. Ronen had achieved the Noble level twice before at the Junior level, but he aged out this year, and he needed to demonstrate that he had the skill to be a Noble at the Teen level. “It was an unforgettable moment when Jonathan realized that not only was he able to renew his scholarship as an ADE Noble at the Teen level, but in addition, he got awarded the coveted title of Male Teen Dancer of the Year,” Pamela said. She added: “Jonathan is ecstatic to continue in the Noble program because he is continuously inspired by dancing at the highest level, assisting the amazing faculty, networking with other dancers and professionals, and being part of special performances and travel opportunities.” “We are very proud of Jonathan’s accomplishments in his dance journey,” she said.

Randy Now’s Man Cave makes a move but retains its groove By Richard J. Skelly

Impresario Randy Now—AKA Randy Ellis—had something of a vision for Randy Now’s Man Cave when he opened the store’s first location on Farnsworth Avenue in Bordentown in 2012. With the move of his store to a space on West Ward Street in Hightstown that is three times the size of his old space, he has been able to broaden that vision. “I had no clue what I was doing, but yes, I had a vision,” Now says at his new quarters just off Route 33. Prior to opening Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown, Now put Bordentown on the map, booking shows at The Record Collector. Years before that, he put a once-seedy neighborhood in Trenton on the map for the shows he booked in the 1980s and ’90s at City Gardens on Calhoun Street. Joe Zook and Blues Deluxe had a Tuesday night residency at the club, and Now arranged for bands like Nirvana, Green Day, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Godfathers to perform at the 1,000-person capacity City Gardens before others on the East Coast knew who these bands were. When he opened the Man Cave in Bor-

other snacks from Spring Lake, New Jersey. “The idea was to continue with some things that got started at City Gardens,” Now says. “It was a shot in the dark.” He had a good run on Farnsworth Avenue in Bordentown, but eventually the space proved too small. Additionally, he says, since the pandemic,

restaurants with expansion tents have taken over many of the parking spaces near his old store. Too many patrons were complaining for many months there was no place to park in Bordentown. Prompted by another Bordentown resident, Mark Fenton, who had previously moved his store Handmade Art Studios to 149 West Ward Avenue in Hightstown, Now and his wife, musician-educator Mary Mindas, took deep breaths and moved the Man Cave in May to Hightstown. In addition to having the space for merchandise, Now’s new store sits adjacent to a 130-space parking lot. Nearby outlets include the Old Hights Brewery, a yoga studio, a luncheonette, and a unisex hair stylist. The new Man Cave retail store is also a designated Amazon pick-up location. Now says, “Fenton was bugging me for a couple of years, ‘You’ve got to come over here and check out some spaces.’ We came out here a few months ago to say hello to him, and there were a couple of vacancies he knew of in town.” And although he says past experiences made him think that “Hightstown was a little rough,” Now and his wife visited and “parked right here and saw this building and the sign said ‘Closing March 1.’ I asked

what’s happening Checking the chess scene BY REBEKAH SCHROEDER

Transfixed by the boards in front of them, a group of youthful participants with smiles and concentrated stares faced off against a single player playing 19 simultaneous games against them. For two hours, the focus was on chess. Out of the 25 total children who joyously faced off against National Master Winston Ni, only three lasted until a technical draw was announced. This was a busy day for Ni, but also for Eric Wu, the founder of nonprofit Impact Chess, the organization responsible for hosting their first ever “Chess in the Park” event on July 10 at Princeton’s Turning Basin Park. Wu, a four-time NJ state grade champion, wanted to give the children who assembled “an experience, a memory,” of chess for them to leave with. He noted the enthusiastic reactions of the younger players as Ni — who is also the director of community engagement for Impact Chess, a rising senior at Princeton Day School, and the 2018 National K-9 Cham-

pion — made moves in his “simultaneous exhibition.” “I found that just to be super beautiful, because of how much these kids are involved in the game and how much they care about it, and through that thinking, through that competitive atmosphere, you can really see growth,” Wu said. Along with the Princeton Chess Academy and volunteers, Impact Chess had set up 20 chess boards, then started with 30 minutes of free play for the young students. Wu said the day, which steadily grew in size and spirit over four hours, exceeded his expectations. Explaining that “the mission of Impact Chess is to spread chess to those who would benefit from it the most,” Wu acknowledged that while the game can help anyone, the nonprofit mainly focuses on children and seniors. For children, he added, there are positives in “inspiring them, giving them a hobby or passion they can pursue, which helps them a lot later in life as they

Taking the Fight Against Chronic Pain to New Levels

CHESS, continued from Page 2

develop,” but the same social and cognitive perks can apply to seniors, too. Wu has spent this year advocating for the advancement of chess, officially registering the nonprofit organization in January, 2022. According to its website, Impact Chess has raised $1,330 and impacted 100 people through attendance at events and donations. But before chess came into Wu’s life, there was Go. “When I was very young, and I lived in China, the popular board games were Go and Chinese chess,” said Wu, who usually played with his father, Haibo. Go is also strategy-based, but features a larger board with an increased number of moves and pieces — chess has 20 starting possibilities to Go’s 361, and instead of representing hierarchical ranks as chess pieces do, Go stones are rounded — with the objective being to take up as much of the board, or territory, as possible. Born in San Francisco, Wu frequently moved back and forth between California and China until his family relocated to Princeton in the summer before second grade. There, he noticed that chess dominated the world of thinking board games, so his days of Go stopped. From the day he signed up for chess summer camp at Princeton Academy, right next to the Princeton Day School he would later attend, it was obvious that Wu’s future would be heavily influenced by chess and its principles. “Chess has taught me a lot, and throughout the process I felt my own growth. I became better at chess, and I also met new people, so that’s why I’ve been playing ever since,” he said, adding that chess helped him explore creativity, strategic thinking, and how to remain calm under pressure. Wu, 16, has lived in Princeton for nearly half of his life, but he is also a rising junior at Phillips Exeter Academy, a private boarding school in New Hampshire. His chess rating is around 2,000 — what he describes as“expert level” — and he is also in the top 100 for his age in the United States. Yet entrepreneurship is more of his current focus. The idea for Impact Chess came from a late-night phone call with a friend, where Wu, still in Exeter, found himself reminiscing about past life experiences. “Thinking back, I realized that a lot of the decisions I made were perfectly what would have led me to where I am today. I was able to, in a lot of different situations, find the best thing for myself and also others,” he explained, linking that to his deep understanding of chess, where high level players regularly think

several moves ahead. “At that moment, I really felt that I was blessed by the game of chess, [and] I thought I should definitely give this to other people. There’s so many ways that chess can help.” Wu knew that gearing programming towards students, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities, could result in “a brighter future” changed by the mutual celebration of chess. “In today’s society, political polarization is almost at an all-time high. Chess teaches us so much about perspective, strategic thinking, and removing emotions from judgment — all those things that could definitely just help people think more rationally, more sympathetically. I really feel like chess is just a great tool that helps people think about so many different things, and I wanted to share that with others,” Wu said. A renewed interest in the game, due in part to both the pandemic and the success of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” was another factor in making the dream of bringing chess to new audiences possible. The sale of physical chess sets rose, as did the rate of female players who identified with the show’s lead. Online platforms such as Chess.com exploded, as people were inspired by not just media, but the chance of escaping isolation, as many chose boards over boredom. Twitch, which has had a partnership with Chess.com since 2018, streamed matches and tournaments live. While Wu appreciated that the popularity of chess increased, a downside was that “because of the pandemic, many tournaments, events, in-person lessons, and classes all had to be canceled. So even though the pandemic has helped this surge and chess playing in general, it really harmed the in-person experience of the over-the-board tournaments, and the United States Chess Federation events.” Wu continued that “these closures, and overall, the harm that COVID has caused,” all factored into the message of Impact Chess — not just to expand the game’s reach, but “to try to heal these communities back together,” he said. Prior to the pandemic, Wu, his dad, and friends used to play with members of the Ewing Township Senior & Community Center Chess Club. The power of chess bridged the gap between the varying age groups and skill levels, but after being shut down for such a long time, the club struggled. In June, the only attendees were Wu, his dad Haibo, and club president Bong Ortiz. This motivated Wu to work with the club to establish quad tournaments — where each player engages in three

rounds against those of similar ranking. “It was actually a huge success, because there were around a dozen participants, which was incredible compared to the three people that were at the club meeting,” Wu said, with that collaboration still ongoing. Impact Chess also partnered with Arm in Arm, a Trenton nonprofit to help those in need receive basic care and employment, to donate 63 chess sets to Robbins Elementary School. After volunteers taught grades the basics of the game, 45 of those sets went to families, while 17 stayed behind, one for each classroom. As Impact Chess is still in its infancy, Wu’s priorities are to establish opportunities for outreach, instruction, and community building — at the moment, that means organizing events and recruiting members. Their national scale already includes leaders in Massachusetts, Boston, Michigan, and Northern California, while international operations have started in Toronto, Canada. Planning for the future, though, was made easier through connections closer to home. When Eric and Haibo first started playing in Princeton, they mainly stuck to school tournaments, but his father created a group chat for parents of local chess players in hopes that they could all share resources. Soon, the platform became a place for mentorship opportunities as well, now amassing about 2,000 members. With more than just guardians, the chat has allowed Wu to interact with chess players he idolized as a child. As most of them are now college students, they were more than open to the idea of offering their time and advice. Since Eric was able to build on these preexisting relationships, it was a natural transition for them to become involved. One of the advisors is Andrew Tang, a grandmaster and Princeton University student regarded as “one of the best bullet chess players in the world,” referring to a variant of chess with very short time controls such as hyperbullet (30 seconds per player) or ultrabullet (15 seconds per player). Other notable figures include Darwin Yang, a grandmaster getting his Ph.D. in economics at Princeton, Jennifer Yu, the 2019 U.S. Women’s Champion and woman grandmaster, and Jeffery Xiong, who “qualified for the grandmaster title at age 14, after he became the youngest champion in the history of the Chicago Open,” according to the website. While these younger players are Wu’s friends, two of the adult advisors are his coaches, renowned chess grandmasters Larry Christiansen and Gregory

Eric Wu is the founder of Impact Chess.

Kaidanov. Wu maintained that the beauty of chess lies in its inability to discriminate. “No matter what, when you play chess, you have 16 pieces on the board, the exact same as your opponent. That is something that is truly magical about chess, because I would say almost anyone could play it. Even if you’re playing against the world champion, for instance, technically you have a chance. You start out completely even, whereas in a lot of other activities, there are some limits,” he said, such as being athletic or tall in sports. “For chess, you just have to be willing to play it, to try to outthink your opponent.” If you lose, you do so with grace, Wu said, which is yet another merit to chess. “I’ve lost over 200 games before, and in a lot of things I do, I don’t really experience much failure — things are more in the gray area. But for chess, you either win or you lose. It doesn’t matter how close you were, it doesn’t matter how much time you spent, at the end, the result is” what it is, ending in either a victory, loss or a draw. Every month, Impact Chess is set to host Ewing Chess Club quads, as well as Chess in the Park Events, with the latter next scheduled for Sunday, August 7. “For Impact Chess, I definitely want to continue it even beyond high school, maybe even beyond college, because it’s something that I really love doing, and that’s what I think entrepreneurship means,” Wu said. “Entrepreneurship is the creation of value.” He will always play the game and aims to attend nationals, but Wu defines his professional path through the ability to expand on his imagination — where, by combining strategies with his passion, he is sure to make winning moves outside of chess. Central NJ Ballet Theatre Ballet Is Beautiful Alisha Cardenas believes ballet is the most beautiful thing on earth. It’s little surprise, then, that this love of ballet affects everything she does as the director of the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre. Now in her 11th year as the head of the region’s best ballet school, Cardenas focuses on finding and encouraging the dancer in everyone, within classical/contemporary and musical theater programs. The school teaches dancers ages 2 1/2 and up to reach their fullest — “Everybody deserves the best education” — without worrying about the competitive atmosphere some other schools spouse. “Winning trophies has its place,” Cardenas says, “but dance is art. How do you really measure artistry?” Cardenas and her staff treat every dancer as the individual she (or he, there are some boys in the class) is. Some need a little more attention, some want to work toward a career in dance, some just want to be part of something special. It all depends on the person and the goal. And Cardenas finds out what those goals are right away. “The first thing I always ask is, ‘What do you want to get out of us?’” she says. She expects all her dancers to give everything they can, but the instructors strive to build a communal school where everyone encourages and everyone is excited to see how everyone else is coming along. “There is no judgment between other students like there is at other studios. Ms. Alisha is very open and kind.

She really wants the best for her students!” says Shriya Varma, who has been dancing at CNJBT since 2011 and now is an alumna who was accepted to the Rutgers Mason Gross BFA Dance program. In 2018, the Cardenas family purchased 221 Broad Street to expand CNJBT’s growing student body. The space boasts impressive high ceilings and a sprung floor with an open lobby to view classes. The space is named “The Christine Cardenas Center for Performing Arts Education” in honor of her mother, who lost her battle with stage 4 colon cancer. “She was so proud of all of us. She always encouraged me to follow my dreams,” Cardenas says. “This space is a safe space for

young artist and dreamers.” Currently, the CNJBT is enrolling students for summer and this coming fall. This year’s ballets will be the comedic Ballet, Coppelia, June 2023. But first the holiday tradition. And yes, all students in the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre take part in “The Nutcracker” and “Coppelia.” In other words, things are busy for this classically trained dancer from Atlanta, Georgia, whose dream of becoming a director and owner of a school that stresses the fundamentals of ballet has been on track since 2011. Since opening, Cardenas has trained students who have been accepted to the following programs: American Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rock School For Dance Summer Intensive, Washington National Ballet Summer Intensive, The Bolshoi Summer Intensive, the Central PA Youth Ballet Summer Program, Joffrey Ballet Summer and Year round programs, Philly Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rocketts Summer Intensive, Princeton Ballet Trainee Program, and including collegiate dance major programs such as AMDA, Marymount Manhattan College Dance, Johns Hopkins, Kennesaw University, Stockton University, Rutgers Mason Gross, and Towson University Dance Major Programs among others. “I can honestly say that I was prepared for the demands of college dance. My professors gave me solid reviews while I attended,” says former CNJBT student Alexa Angelucci. Cardenas has also presented dancers for the prestigious Youth American Grande Prix in Philadelphia. All received high marks including Top 10 awards! They will be returning to the YAGP in November.

St. George Preschool A Safe Place for Growth

Alisha Cardenas of Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre But she’s not too busy to encourage new dancers, whether they dream of soaring across the Broadway stage or just want to experience the joy of ballet. The Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre is currently enrolling for all ages and levels for the 2022-2023 school year. “There’s something for everybody here,” Cardenas says. Central NJ Ballet Theatre, 221 Broad Street, Florence. www.cnjballet. com.

At St. George Preschool, we believe that each child has an innate drive for exploring, discovering, communicating, and learning. Our purpose is to provide a safe, warm, and nurturing environment for children to develop this innate drive to the fullest, and become life-long learners. Our goal is to help each child develop his/her individual interests, creativity and potential at their own pace by providing a wide variety of fun and age-appropriate activities and materials. In addition to the developmental goals in the areas of math, language, science, cognitive skills, motor skills, etc., stipulated by the state, the school aims to promote learning skills for life. At the same time, we aim to enhance the child’s social, moral, cultural and spiritual growth through group interactions, uplifting stories, cultural events and gentle guidance. Since “a healthy mind is in a healthy body” as the Ancient Greeks said, we provide a huge indoors gym and a beautiful play ground with regular physical activities.

We offer high quality academic English programs for Preschool (3 years and potty trained) and Pre-K (must be 4 years old by October 1 of school year). Early morning care, after care, and enrichment programs are also available. We are part of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and state licensed by the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services. Our experienced staff has

a passion building a foundation for a life-long love of learning. We are truly a family and we treat your children as such. For more information regarding our program, please visit our website. Stuart Country Day School Designed for Her: The Value of an All-Girls High School Education

by Dr. Marissa Muoio, Head of Upper School At Stuart, we deeply value an individualized approach to education. Here, your daughter is known, respected, and ready for success. Our enduring mission — “to prepare young women for lives of exceptional leadership and service within the framework of the Sacred Heart goals” — focuses on how we continue to define student achievement: producing educated women who are independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence. It drives everything we do and it’s how we live our life throughout campus. We know that a rigorous, independent education can change the world. We have done it ourselves with over 50 years of alumnae who have fervently lived out our school’s mission from the Peace Corps to

the board room to the director’s chair. From their early days here, our girls learn how to approach challenges with confidence while nurturing and celebrating their own individuality. Our students have a supportive environment in which to thrive, cultivate their minds and refine their voices while less burdened by the discrimination they continue to experience in the larger world. Here at Stuart, our exceptional high school program is intentionally tailored to the way girls learn best — through collaboration, discussion, and individualized attention. Our curriculum is dynamic, intentional and collaboratively constructed, offering

relevant classes and individualized opportunities that allow students to excel in many ways and stages of their learning. Whether Stuart students are experimenting in their STEM classes, competing on the playing field, leading a club meeting, editing a publication, or performing on stage, they are engaged in learning that is creative, collaborative, and inspired; students learn to think critically and to solve problems through multiple lenses no matter the task. When considering the difference between co-ed and single-gender education for your daughter, I encourage you to consider the

following: ● Does your daughter’s current school encourage her to find her voice? ● Does your daughter’s school inspire girls to pursue their passion even in areas traditionally dominated by men? ● Do the girls in your daughter’s school hold leadership positions? Are they class president? Are they the editor-in-chief of the yearbook? ● Do they value girls’ athletic teams as much as the boys’ teams? We know that the results of an all-girls upper school experience are remarkable. Our Stuart students continue to impress with their college matriculations and choices that are not only exceptional and competitive among peer schools but are a genuine reflection of students’ individual talents and career aspirations that have been nurtured by faculty and staff that truly knows their students .” At Stuart, she is known ... she is confident ... and she is unstoppable. Come join us to learn more.” Stuart Country Day School, 1200 Stuart Road, Princeton. 609-9212330. www.stuartschool.org. See ad, page 11.

Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies – some are the result of a disease like diabetes, while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still others are the result of an injury or compression on the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing that their symptoms may be due to Peripheral Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get worse, including numbness, burning or tingling sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment options have been limited to a small assortment of pain medications, which can lead to further issues. Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.

Mark to look into it.” It turns out his new landlord and his wife were fans of Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown and actually came out to the store on several occasions. Since the move, Now is carefully monitoring his new customer base and his old customer base via an extensive e-mail list, and wants to take some time to get the new store grounded with a solid customer base. He says about 60 percent of the Man Cave patrons over the years have been women, shopping for their husbands or boyfriends or just for themselves. “When I opened this store in Bordentown somebody said to me ‘You know you’re going to lose all your women customers with a name like this,’ and I said well I’ll bet you it’s going to be 60 percent men, 40 percent women. Actually, it’s kind of been the other way around, more women shop here. Men will buy the high-priced collectible items, some vinyl album that means a lot to them, but women will come in and buy a couple of different things: t-shirts, a couple of sodas, a couple of snacks.” Now’s father worked as a deliveryman for a Bordentown-based laundry business and his mother was a housewife who raised four kids and never got her driver’s license. Now is a fourth generation Bordentown resident. Now got interested in music in junior high school via Princeton University radio station WPRB-FM and eventually befriended several of the station’s DJs, who came in handy once he began promoting shows at City Gardens. After attending a semester at William Penn College in Iowa, where he had plans to major in communications / journalism, Now came back home to play drums and sing with his former band, Construction. The band got busy and gigs were lucrative during the heyday of the Trenton-area club scene of the late 1970s.

Now eventually left the band and took a job as a postman in Cranbury. It was at that time in 1980 he began working as a club DJ. He put that club on the map as a DJ playing new wave and punk rock bands including the Talking Heads, B-52s, and the Ramones, and later, as an entertainment director for the club. After many successful shows at City Gardens and the usual numbers of flops, Now eventually left City Gardens in 1997 but with experience in marketing, merchandising, public and community relations, and dealing with different personalities from a broad spectrum of musicians and comedians, many of them very road-weary. Combining the past experiences with the freshness of a new location, Now seems well-positioned to enjoy continued growth in Hightstown. “At the Old Hights Brewery in back, people told me they used to go to shows that I booked at City Gardens,” he says, “so I’m hoping that me being here will help them and the luncheonette here, my friend Mark Fenton with his jewelry and art stuff, and even the hair stylist who came up the other day and introduced herself. I’m hoping I can help bring her new business, too. We’re all looking to work together here and everybody has been really friendly.” In the end, the Man Cave simply outgrew its old space on Farnsworth Avenue. Asked about the possibility of some future in-store performances, Now originally says he’s taking it one day at a time — then sets the stage for a Saturday, September 3, event: “An Evening with Steve Wynn” covering songs from the singer, guitarist, and bandleader of the Dream Syndicate’s 40-year career. Randy Now’s Man Cave, 119 West Ward Street, Hightstown. Wednesday, noon to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, noon to 7 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. 609-4243766 or www.mancavenj.com.

Basketball players work to improve at summer league Rich Fisher

In the dead of winter when fans pack high school gyms to watch two good basketball teams, they’re not thinking about the heat and humidity of summer. Oftentimes, however, those teams they are watching used the dog days to improve by molding each individual into a better version of themselves. And the better the competition, the more they improved. Which is why, for the second straight summer, Connor Hayes has taken his Robbinsville High boys team to Jersey City to play in the ultra-competitive Hamilton Park Summer League. Games are played at Dickinson High School and some of the state’s top teams participate, including Patrick, Hudson Catholic and St. Peter’s Prep among others. Trenton gives the league a second Colonial Valley Conference participant, but Hayes is more interested in teams he doesn’t see in January. “It’s just a different style of play than

a lot of teams are gonna play us around here,” he said. “We can get our guys to see different situations that we may get into when we play in those bigger games down the stretch of the season. It’s just nice to not play the same teams. “With the CVC we play each other multiple times a year sometimes. It’s nice to just get different looks without scouting reports or anything like that. Just figuring out on the go how to try and win a game. “You just see different size up there, that’s the biggest thing. We just played Snyder on Friday, they had two 6-7, 6-8 guys. The day before we played Hudson Catholic, they had a 6-9 dude. Earlier in the summer we played (Patrick) and they had 6-10, 6-8, 6-8. The size is a big difference.” Pat Kapp, the Ravens lone returning senior with ample experience, welcomes the change. “The competition is very good,” he said. “We just played St. Peter’s Prep and Hudson Catholic and they had kids with

D-I offers, and some Top 10 kids in the state. That’s very good competition to get us better. And the CVC doesn’t have that much height. It’s not like there’s a 6-5 giant in the CVC. So it’s definitely helping us playing against stronger, bigger kids and learning how to shoot over them.” During the past three seasons, Robbinsville went 50-18 and reached the Mercer County Tournament semifinals in 2020 and the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 3 finals in 2022. During that time they had standout scoring threats in Ryan Smith and Brian Herbert. With Herbert’s graduation, this becomes the key year for the Ravens to show that they are becoming what Hayes wants them to be – a solid program year in and year out. It’s true that Luke Billings will return as a solid scorer, but he had Herbert to take the pressure off in his first two years. “We gotta work on our scoring,” Kapp said. “Brian Herbert had 60 percent of the scoring. And we have to buckle down

on our defense. The more we score and the less turnovers we have will just make it easier for us to win CVC.” Despite Herbert’s output, Kapp is quick to note he can be replaced by committee. “Everyone thought that Herbert was our entire team, but that’s because they didn’t see anything else other than Herbert,” the forward said. “They didn’t see the people behind him who gave Herbert all that competition in practice to get him better. So we’ll definitely show a lot. I think the CVC will be shocked by what we can do.” The Ravens summer performance has helped give Kapp such confidence. “We’re seeing a lot of people step up more than last year,” he said. “We haven’t seen this side of these people. It’s nice to see them start to show their true selves.” And that’s what has to happen as this was seen as an important summer for each player to get better and make up for Herbert’s loss. “We’re feeling good about what we’ve

done,” said Hayes, whose team was 7-7 and tied for ninth (out of 22 teams) on July 18. “We always tell our guys, you become a better basketball player in the off-season. In the season is when we become a better team. That’s when we take all these better pieces that have improved over the summer and kind of gel them together within the season to make the best team possible.” Robbinsville also has between 15 and 25 players showing up for open gym in the summer, but only nine are on the Hamilton Park roster (although guest players are allowed if someone can’t make it). The regular players include seniors Kapp and Leron Saunders, juniors Tyler Handy, Evan Bunnell, Dylan Golizio and Jack Miller, sophomores Marcus Rodolphe and Matt Boss and freshman Tyler Bunnell. Billings, a Wake Forest baseball recruit, is not playing in order to concentrate on his main sport. Of that group, only Kapp, Handy and Bunnell have seen ample varsity time, so there are a lot of guys Hayes wants to see step it up. “Our main focus this summer is getting these younger guys — who we expect to step right into the rotation in some circumstances – used to highlevel varsity competition,” the coach said. “Fortunately the Jersey City league

does this for us. It just gets them into night).” The Bunnell brothers have also looked situations they probably haven’t been in between freshman games, JV games and good. “Evan Bunnell has been a big piece,” in some instances middle school games. to take him away pretty early once they realize he’s a major threat.” Rodolphe and Boss are “sophomores that are making the most of every opportunity. They’re showing us we can depend on them in crunch time situations because they’ve seen it 14 times already this summer.” Hayes noted that Boss is a strong outside shooter, good cutter and solid ball handler who just needs to attack more with the ball. Rodolphe is a “lights out shooter” who has buried shots all summer. “We have a ton of confidence in those two guys moving into the season,” the coach said. As for the juniors, Miller has had “a very good summer” at point guard while Golizio has improved his perimeter shooting at off guard and wants the ball at crunch time. “He won’t back down from anybody in any situation,” Hayes said. “If it’s a threepoint game with two seconds left on the clock he wants a play drawn up for him to take that shot.” How this will all transcend into the regular season remains to be seen but, if the old cliche’ of steel sharpens steel has any credence to it, Robbinsville will be as ready as possible to try and show it’s a program with staying power.

Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell Earns ‘A’ Grade for Quality from The Leapfrog Group Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. This national distinction recognizes Capital Health’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital. “Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell is home to many innovative services, such as our Cancer Center, the Josephine Plumeri Birthing Center and Regional Perinatal Center, and minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System,” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO, Capital Health. “By earning an ‘A’ from the Leapfrog group, residents in our community can be assured of our continuing status as a health care leader in the region.” “Capital Health is committed to improving quality and safety outcomes throughout our organization,” said Dr. Mark Arcaro, acting vice president of Clinical Performance at Capital Health. “And while this recognition validates our efforts, we are always looking ahead

to make sustained improvements and continue to meet and exceed national standards of care.” The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. “As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Capital Health for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”

To earn accreditation for a three-year term, a cancer program must meet 34 quality care standards established by the CoC, be evaluated every three years through an extensive survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Capital Health last earned this accreditation in 2019.

The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework for Capital Health to maintain its high quality of patient care through various programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care, including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, life-long follow-up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care. When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient-centered services including psycho-social support and a patient navigation process that seeks to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life.

As a CoC-accredited cancer center, Capital Health takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires individualized care among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons.
