South grad excels at TCNJ tennis By RiCh Fisher

When Matthew Michibata played baseball for the West Windsor Little League, he was good enough to make All Stars. That honor, however, wasn’t enough to hold his interest on the diamond. “I got a lot of cracks from my baseball coach about sitting in the outfield picking grass,” Michibata

said. “I was athletic enough to get up and get a ball when it came to me. But that’s not something I can do in tennis.” And tennis is the sport in which Michibata has excelled since focusing on it fulltime at age 12. The rising senior is preparing for his final season of collegiate competition at The College of New Jersey, where he has been first or second singles and No.

1 doubles throughout his career. “It went super fast,” Michibata said. “It’s been such a weird time with COVID and everything. It felt really short, but also long at the same time. I took a guest semester and it gave me extra time to work on my tennis and I’m also using my extra year of (COVID-related) eligibility, which is nice. But I just don’t See MICHIBATA, Page 6

Nature is a sensory experience for Lori Langsner. Others may simply relax and bask in the scenery, but she, and her brush, tend to keep moving, rhythmically grasping the subtle changes without losing that sense of peace. There are birds chirping, or perhaps no sound at all, except a breeze. Langsner’s landscape paintings allow for ripples in the water to become oil on her canvas, but light and color are equally her muses as they provide a wave of calm over the artist. “There is a quietude and a beauty in nature that I love,” she said. “When I’m painting anywhere outdoors, the world is gone. I am so immersed in the process of painting and capturing that moment of what I’m looking at in nature, in the landscape, that three hours go by.” But as a way to bring that brightness together as a community, Langsner is one of the jurors for the West Windsor Arts Council’s summer exhibition, “By the Light of Day,” focusing directly on plein air painting—or “en plein air,” a French term for painting outdoors, that directly translates to “in the open air.” The exhibition, which runs through Aug. 27, is a testament to how local creatives employed

this 19th Century technique, later popularized by Impressionists like Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne, to echo nature in its simplicity. “Plein air is capturing the light, that ever-changing light, with color and brushstroke like the Impressionists,” Langsner said. “I don’t think the French term ‘en plein air’ is known to the average person. It is known to painters, artists and art students, but the public has no sense, to my knowledge, of what en plein air is—and to explain it to them is one thing, but to see it? It opens up your eyes to the idea of literally, you are outside and you created this.” “By the Light of Day” features work from Langsner’s fellow juror, Stockton artist Bob Barish, as well as pieces like “Kayak Daze” by Mary Lou Thomas and “Shade of the Sycamore” by Carlo Fiorentini. A full list of exhibiting artists can be found online at the WWAC. When Langsner retired following 36 years teaching art in New York City public schools, she was able to rekindle her fondness for painting, passionately taking again to the craft in her free time. But just as art remained intrinsic to Langsner’s happiness, so did her active pursuit of instruction. She takes a weekly class at the Princeton Arts Council, then teaches See WWAC, Page 4

WWAC continued from Page 1 adults both the “Art of Oil Painting” and “Plein Air: Capture the Moment” classes at West Windsor Arts. In addition to helping select the pieces, Langsner was asked to provide examples of her own, which prompted the inclusion of two recent and smaller works, as well as one she felt “was a true plein air painting from this area.” ‘Morning on the Lake,’ the largest of the trio, was painted by Mercer County Park’s boathouse area and reflects the nearby lush greenery as it meets the water’s surface. Depending on the piece, Langsner either paints the entire scene strictly en plein air, tracking the light for two or three hours at a time before it changes, or brings it back to her basement studio. While she tends to prefer the latter, she always finishes where she started—outdoors, observing the real, natural colors, even as they constantly shift. For ‘Spring Awakening,’ Langsner said she was drawn to this “beautiful pink blossom cherry tree” at the D&R Greenway Land Trust in Princeton. Her results are just as magnetic in the way they achieve a soft, rosy texture melting into the sky above. Langsner, a West Windsor resident who grew up in Brooklyn, describes herself as a

Lori Langsner with some of her works being displayed in the West Windsor Arts Center. “traditionalist in the styles” like the Impressionists, feeling a kinship in their shared affinity for bright hues and patterns. “The impressionists are like my friends,” she said with a laugh, having studied, taught, and visited their work on vacations prior to COVID. “But I am drawn to the Impressionists, as most people are,

and it’s for the light and the color. It just uplifts you. It gives you a sense of beauty and happiness.” ‘Canal Path’ is a rendering of a towpath from West Windsor to Princeton combining multiple shades of green with earthy tones. As a child, Langsner “always knew” she wanted to be a teacher, but the subject

was a little less known. In a constant battle between French and art—with Impressionism a constant favorite of both— finally, she said, “the art overpowered.” Langsner remembered being surrounded by art as a child, whether it was how her mother dutifully kept a 3-year-old Lori’s drawing of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and bought her paint-by-numbers from the toy store, or her two aunts— Iris and Lita Kelmenson, her father’s brothers’ wives—who remain active creators to this day. “They were always an influence, because if I would go to their home, I was always questioning, and they were always showing me their work. They truly have inspired me to become an artist,” she said. Even though Lita primarily works with wood sculptures and cast polyester resin, her and Iris both share more than a few similarities with their niece—all three of them taught professionally, while Iris also paints landscapes and still life. Langsner went on to receive a B.A. in Fine Arts from Queens College and a M.S. in Special Education and Neuropsychological Learning Disabilities from Brooklyn College. Unable to find a job at the time, she had been encouraged to switch concentrations as another way to broaden her repertoire. This change, although unexpected, evidently served her well in the

classroom, as she could better help students with disabilities. Langsner moved to Staten Island while she taught in her native borough. Then, when she moved out to West Windsor in 1992, she transferred to a Staten Island school, where Langsner happily and readily commuted for most of her career. But it was Aunt Lita who planted a seed in the back of Langsner’s mind about teaching an older age demographic, so when a recently-retired Lori responded to an ad in West Windsor-Plainsboro News for art instructors, she was ready to see beyond middle school. Over her seven years at West Windsor Arts, Langsner learned to adapt her strategies, as did the same group of women who started under her that very first day— rather than provide a specific artist as a framework, she guides and challenges them as she would herself, as they have since independently “developed their own styles.” It’s a habit, but Langsner admitted that sometimes she still accidentally compliments her classes like she would those younger students, because for her, teaching is a natural reflex. She does prefer to paint en plein air during spring and summer, given the weather’s impact on the outdoors experience, but regardless of that preference, she still has

Langsner will be instructing beginners in the basics of oil painting at night, while her intermediate courses continue on Thursday mornings. When she is not

painting or teaching twice a week, Langsner babysits her grandchildren, calling it “a perfect little world” to have. “When we were all shut down, I think I did some of my best paintings, and one

of them had won first place at the Mercer County Senior Art Show because I had the time to focus so much on the painting, I would work almost every day,” Langsner said, her style becoming more realistic as a result. “I think I was fortunate to have art that I can escape to, truthfully,” she continued, “There’s about eight paintings that I did during the pandemic, larger size paintings, and I’m very proud of those.” Langsner is also set to have her own show at the West Windsor Library in December, where she intends to bring a range of works done both en plein air or still life. “I do hope that the people come to an understanding of what plein air is and an appreciation for it, and to see the wonderful beauty that is surrounding this whole area,” Langsner said, wishing that people might look at nature “a little differently,” as “through the artist’s eyes is the best way to see what plein air is all about.” Throughout Langsner’s plein air work, light delicately plays with the sky, water, and off of surrounding structures—some organic and others manmade, like the walking path—to show scenery in its raw, colorful effervescence. Between every textured brush stroke, the three pieces indicate an artist in her prime who is fit to jury an exhibit of this caliber.

MICHIBATA continued from Page 1 want it to end.” The 2018 West Windsor-Plainsboro South graduate has tuned up for his final season by hitting with friends this summer. He planned on playing in the Jack Cryan Tournament in late July, and also played on grass for the first time when he was a Middle States representative at the Church Cup tournament in Rhode Island. Michibata won both his singles matches on grass. “I think that was a really good experience,” he said. “Going into it, I knew I would do well on grass because it fits my game so well. The serve and volley game works best there and that’s my favorite style, so I was able to transition into it pretty smoothly. “I didn’t quite expect it to be that much fun. I think after one experience it’s my favorite surface.” “It’s too bad,” he added with a laugh, “that colleges don’t play on all different surfaces.” Michibata comes from a tennis family. His mom, Angie, plays the sport and strings rackets at West Windsor’s Princeton Tennis Program (PTP), while his dad, Glenn, is a former USTA tour player. Glenn reached the second round of all four grand slam tournaments and gained the men’s finals in doubles at the 1990 Australian Open. He was ranked as high as No. 5 in doubles in 1991 and No. 48 in singles in 1986. The former head coach at Princeton University, Glenn is currently a PTP instructor and teaches several nationally ranked players. Not too shabby a coach for his son. Bue to Glenn’s modesty, it took a while for Matthew to understand how good dad truly was. “When I was young, I knew about him but it didn’t really register,” Michibata said. “It wasn’t until high school when my ten-

nis friends started coming up to me saying ‘Hey, your dad has a Wikipedia page. We didn’t know he was a pro tennis player.’ I was like ‘Whoa.’ “Maybe it’s not great that I didn’t know he had a Wikipedia page, I don’t know. I don’t even know if he knew.” Despite his success in the sport, Glenn never pushed Matthew to follow him. In fact, he and Angie greatly enjoyed attending the little league games. But they could see his interest start to wane. “Right around 11 or 12 he wanted more action,” Glenn said. “Sometimes when you’re in the outfield and the ball doesn’t get hit to you; and then it’s not your turn to bat when your team’s up, you can go a whole inning without doing anything. One day he said ‘Dad I want to see how I do in tennis.’ Once he started he never let go.” Due to Matt’s athleticism, Glenn felt his strengths were as a net player and doubles player, where reaction time is key. “He’s got very quick reflexes and is very quick on the first step, he’s got good agility,” the coach said. “You can use those skills when you play baseline but it’s really suited for the net. It’s not the usual baseline, big serve, all groundstroke. I thought he would be best served by learning to play the net and coming to the net more often than what’s typical of today’s players. He embraced that. “I also put a priority on him learning the game of doubles. That’s probably been his strength through Juniors and college. He plays good singles but his doubles are really strong. I think he enjoys that teammate aspect too; that there’s someone on the court with him.” Matt jumped at the chance to play a faster paced game. Considering his outfield impatience waiting for fly balls, it made sense. “Oh yeah, I don’t think grinding at the

baseline is my thing,” he said. “I always loved quick paced tennis. The net game really is good for that. I have been working on my game so I don’t get impatient, but that’s just who I am.” After enjoying a strong career playing for some WW-P South powerhouses, Michibata decided on TCNJ because of its proximity and strong nursing program. He had originally planned on majoring in General Health with ideas on being a physical therapist. “I’ve been injured so many times, I kind of know what goes into it,” he said. “But a lot of my family’s friends are nurses, they highly recommended to go into nursing instead. “My goal right now is to get through nursing school. It’s been super-tough balancing nursing and tennis at the same time. I’ve been told by upperclassmen, other nursing students, that I should drop tennis to focus on nursing because it’s that hard. But I wanted to keep on with tennis because it’s such an important part of my life.” It has also been a successful part of his college life. As a freshman, Michibata was the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s Co-Rookie of the Year and made All-NJAC in singles and doubles. He led the Lions with 15 singles wins and was second with 18 doubles wins, and his 33 total victories were the most on the team in four years. As a sophomore, Matthew reached the finals of the ITA Regional Tournament. His 11 singles wins led the team and his 12 doubles wins were second. Last year he went a combined 13-3 and was All-NJAC in both singles and doubles for the third straight season. The classroom whiz also made the NJAC All-Academic team for the second time. In discussing his success and enjoyment with doubles, Michibata said “It’s very quick

paced, but I feel like in doubles I know what I’m doing. I always have a plan, everything has a purpose. Where singles has a lot more variables, I really like that about doubles. You don’t have to be playing amazing to do well in a match, you just have to have a system and know what you’re doing.” As he enters his final year, Michibata’s goal is to reach the NCAA Tournament as an individual and as a team, and to win the ITA Tournament. After graduation, he still plans on playing in some form or another. “Tennis is a huge part of my life,” Michibata said. “Its taught me a lot of things even outside of tennis, like how to carry myself as a person, what to focus on. I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing tennis, by choice at least.” Glenn has been Matthew’s coach from day one, teaching him individually and in PTP clinics. That prompted the pupil to quip “I haven’t fired him yet.” In looking at his son’s exploits, the two things that make dad proudest are his tenacity and conduct. “One thing I love about him is, win or lose, he fights for every point,” Glenn said. “It doesn’t matter what the score is. The other guy could be well ahead and he could still be fighting for that last point. That’s awesome. “Like a typical dad, I’m really proud of my son. He pursued tennis and gave it everything he had; plus he made it a priority to show good character on the court. He won various sportsmanship awards throughout his career. That actually means more than winning tournaments or any ranking he got. He pursued it with the right attitude and had respect for his opponent and respect for the sport.” And not once did he ever sit down to pick grass out between cracks on the court.

what’s happening Checking the chess scene BY REBEKAH SCHROEDER

Transfixed by the boards in front of them, a group of youthful participants with smiles and concentrated stares faced off against a single player playing 19 simultaneous games against them. For two hours, the focus was on chess. Out of the 25 total children who joyously faced off against National Master Winston Ni, only three lasted until a technical draw was announced. This was a busy day for Ni, but also for Eric Wu, the founder of nonprofit Impact Chess, the organization responsible for hosting their first ever “Chess in the Park” event on July 10 at Princeton’s Turning Basin Park. Wu, a four-time NJ state grade champion, wanted to give the children who assembled “an experience, a memory,” of chess for them to leave with. He noted the enthusiastic reactions of the younger players as Ni — who is also the director of community engagement for Impact Chess, a rising senior at Princeton Day School, and the 2018 National K-9 Cham-

pion — made moves in his “simultaneous exhibition.” “I found that just to be super beautiful, because of how much these kids are involved in the game and how much they care about it, and through that thinking, through that competitive atmosphere, you can really see growth,” Wu said. Along with the Princeton Chess Academy and volunteers, Impact Chess had set up 20 chess boards, then started with 30 minutes of free play for the young students. Wu said the day, which steadily grew in size and spirit over four hours, exceeded his expectations. Explaining that “the mission of Impact Chess is to spread chess to those who would benefit from it the most,” Wu acknowledged that while the game can help anyone, the nonprofit mainly focuses on children and seniors. For children, he added, there are positives in “inspiring them, giving them a hobby or passion they can pursue, which helps them a lot later in life as they

Taking the Fight Against Chronic Pain to New Levels

CHESS, continued from Page 2

develop,” but the same social and cognitive perks can apply to seniors, too. Wu has spent this year advocating for the advancement of chess, officially registering the nonprofit organization in January, 2022. According to its website, Impact Chess has raised $1,330 and impacted 100 people through attendance at events and donations. But before chess came into Wu’s life, there was Go. “When I was very young, and I lived in China, the popular board games were Go and Chinese chess,” said Wu, who usually played with his father, Haibo. Go is also strategy-based, but features a larger board with an increased number of moves and pieces — chess has 20 starting possibilities to Go’s 361, and instead of representing hierarchical ranks as chess pieces do, Go stones are rounded — with the objective being to take up as much of the board, or territory, as possible. Born in San Francisco, Wu frequently moved back and forth between California and China until his family relocated to Princeton in the summer before second grade. There, he noticed that chess dominated the world of thinking board games, so his days of Go stopped. From the day he signed up for chess summer camp at Princeton Academy, right next to the Princeton Day School he would later attend, it was obvious that Wu’s future would be heavily influenced by chess and its principles. “Chess has taught me a lot, and throughout the process I felt my own growth. I became better at chess, and I also met new people, so that’s why I’ve been playing ever since,” he said, adding that chess helped him explore creativity, strategic thinking, and how to remain calm under pressure. Wu, 16, has lived in Princeton for nearly half of his life, but he is also a rising junior at Phillips Exeter Academy, a private boarding school in New Hampshire. His chess rating is around 2,000 — what he describes as“expert level” — and he is also in the top 100 for his age in the United States. Yet entrepreneurship is more of his current focus. The idea for Impact Chess came from a late-night phone call with a friend, where Wu, still in Exeter, found himself reminiscing about past life experiences. “Thinking back, I realized that a lot of the decisions I made were perfectly what would have led me to where I am today. I was able to, in a lot of different situations, find the best thing for myself and also others,” he explained, linking that to his deep understanding of chess, where high level players regularly think

several moves ahead. “At that moment, I really felt that I was blessed by the game of chess, [and] I thought I should definitely give this to other people. There’s so many ways that chess can help.” Wu knew that gearing programming towards students, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities, could result in “a brighter future” changed by the mutual celebration of chess. “In today’s society, political polarization is almost at an all-time high. Chess teaches us so much about perspective, strategic thinking, and removing emotions from judgment — all those things that could definitely just help people think more rationally, more sympathetically. I really feel like chess is just a great tool that helps people think about so many different things, and I wanted to share that with others,” Wu said. A renewed interest in the game, due in part to both the pandemic and the success of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” was another factor in making the dream of bringing chess to new audiences possible. The sale of physical chess sets rose, as did the rate of female players who identified with the show’s lead. Online platforms such as Chess.com exploded, as people were inspired by not just media, but the chance of escaping isolation, as many chose boards over boredom. Twitch, which has had a partnership with Chess.com since 2018, streamed matches and tournaments live. While Wu appreciated that the popularity of chess increased, a downside was that “because of the pandemic, many tournaments, events, in-person lessons, and classes all had to be canceled. So even though the pandemic has helped this surge and chess playing in general, it really harmed the in-person experience of the over-the-board tournaments, and the United States Chess Federation events.” Wu continued that “these closures, and overall, the harm that COVID has caused,” all factored into the message of Impact Chess — not just to expand the game’s reach, but “to try to heal these communities back together,” he said. Prior to the pandemic, Wu, his dad, and friends used to play with members of the Ewing Township Senior & Community Center Chess Club. The power of chess bridged the gap between the varying age groups and skill levels, but after being shut down for such a long time, the club struggled. In June, the only attendees were Wu, his dad Haibo, and club president Bong Ortiz. This motivated Wu to work with the club to establish quad tournaments — where each player engages in three

rounds against those of similar ranking. “It was actually a huge success, because there were around a dozen participants, which was incredible compared to the three people that were at the club meeting,” Wu said, with that collaboration still ongoing. Impact Chess also partnered with Arm in Arm, a Trenton nonprofit to help those in need receive basic care and employment, to donate 63 chess sets to Robbins Elementary School. After volunteers taught grades the basics of the game, 45 of those sets went to families, while 17 stayed behind, one for each classroom. As Impact Chess is still in its infancy, Wu’s priorities are to establish opportunities for outreach, instruction, and community building — at the moment, that means organizing events and recruiting members. Their national scale already includes leaders in Massachusetts, Boston, Michigan, and Northern California, while international operations have started in Toronto, Canada. Planning for the future, though, was made easier through connections closer to home. When Eric and Haibo first started playing in Princeton, they mainly stuck to school tournaments, but his father created a group chat for parents of local chess players in hopes that they could all share resources. Soon, the platform became a place for mentorship opportunities as well, now amassing about 2,000 members. With more than just guardians, the chat has allowed Wu to interact with chess players he idolized as a child. As most of them are now college students, they were more than open to the idea of offering their time and advice. Since Eric was able to build on these preexisting relationships, it was a natural transition for them to become involved. One of the advisors is Andrew Tang, a grandmaster and Princeton University student regarded as “one of the best bullet chess players in the world,” referring to a variant of chess with very short time controls such as hyperbullet (30 seconds per player) or ultrabullet (15 seconds per player). Other notable figures include Darwin Yang, a grandmaster getting his Ph.D. in economics at Princeton, Jennifer Yu, the 2019 U.S. Women’s Champion and woman grandmaster, and Jeffery Xiong, who “qualified for the grandmaster title at age 14, after he became the youngest champion in the history of the Chicago Open,” according to the website. While these younger players are Wu’s friends, two of the adult advisors are his coaches, renowned chess grandmasters Larry Christiansen and Gregory

Kaidanov. Wu maintained that the beauty of chess lies in its inability to discriminate. “No matter what, when you play chess, you have 16 pieces on the board, the exact same as your opponent. That is something that is truly magical about chess, because I would say almost anyone could play it. Even if you’re playing against the world champion, for instance, technically you have a chance. You start out completely even, whereas in a lot of other activities, there are some limits,” he said, such as being athletic or tall in sports. “For chess, you just have to be willing to play it, to try to outthink your opponent.” If you lose, you do so with grace, Wu said, which is yet another merit to chess. “I’ve lost over 200 games before, and in a lot of things I do, I don’t really experience much failure — things are more in the gray area. But for chess, you either win or you lose. It doesn’t matter how close you were, it doesn’t matter how much time you spent, at the end, the result is” what it is, ending in either a victory, loss or a draw. Every month, Impact Chess is set to host Ewing Chess Club quads, as well as Chess in the Park Events, with the latter next scheduled for Sunday, August 7. “For Impact Chess, I definitely want to continue it even beyond high school, maybe even beyond college, because it’s something that I really love doing, and that’s what I think entrepreneurship means,” Wu said. “Entrepreneurship is the creation of value.” He will always play the game and aims to attend nationals, but Wu defines his professional path through the ability to expand on his imagination — where, by combining strategies with his passion, he is sure to make winning moves outside of chess. Central NJ Ballet Theatre Ballet Is Beautiful Alisha Cardenas believes ballet is the most beautiful thing on earth. It’s little surprise, then, that this love of ballet affects everything she does as the director of the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre. Now in her 11th year as the head of the region’s best ballet school, Cardenas focuses on finding and encouraging the dancer in everyone, within classical/contemporary and musical theater programs. The school teaches dancers ages 2 1/2 and up to reach their fullest — “Everybody deserves the best education” — without worrying about the competitive atmosphere some other schools spouse. “Winning trophies has its place,” Cardenas says, “but dance is art. How do you really measure artistry?” Cardenas and her staff treat every dancer as the individual she (or he, there are some boys in the class) is. Some need a little more attention, some want to work toward a career in dance, some just want to be part of something special. It all depends on the person and the goal. And Cardenas finds out what those goals are right away. “The first thing I always ask is, ‘What do you want to get out of us?’” she says. She expects all her dancers to give everything they can, but the instructors strive to build a communal school where everyone encourages and everyone is excited to see how everyone else is coming along. “There is no judgment between other students like there is at other studios. Ms. Alisha is very open and kind.

She really wants the best for her students!” says Shriya Varma, who has been dancing at CNJBT since 2011 and now is an alumna who was accepted to the Rutgers Mason Gross BFA Dance program. In 2018, the Cardenas family purchased 221 Broad Street to expand CNJBT’s growing student body. The space boasts impressive high ceilings and a sprung floor with an open lobby to view classes. The space is named “The Christine Cardenas Center for Performing Arts Education” in honor of her mother, who lost her battle with stage 4 colon cancer. “She was so proud of all of us. She always encouraged me to follow my dreams,” Cardenas says. “This space is a safe space for

young artist and dreamers.” Currently, the CNJBT is enrolling students for summer and this coming fall. This year’s ballets will be the comedic Ballet, Coppelia, June 2023. But first the holiday tradition. And yes, all students in the Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre take part in “The Nutcracker” and “Coppelia.” In other words, things are busy for this classically trained dancer from Atlanta, Georgia, whose dream of becoming a director and owner of a school that stresses the fundamentals of ballet has been on track since 2011. Since opening, Cardenas has trained students who have been accepted to the following programs: American Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rock School For Dance Summer Intensive, Washington National Ballet Summer Intensive, The Bolshoi Summer Intensive, the Central PA Youth Ballet Summer Program, Joffrey Ballet Summer and Year round programs, Philly Ballet Summer Intensive, The Rocketts Summer Intensive, Princeton Ballet Trainee Program, and including collegiate dance major programs such as AMDA, Marymount Manhattan College Dance, Johns Hopkins, Kennesaw University, Stockton University, Rutgers Mason Gross, and Towson University Dance Major Programs among others. “I can honestly say that I was prepared for the demands of college dance. My professors gave me solid reviews while I attended,” says former CNJBT student Alexa Angelucci. Cardenas has also presented dancers for the prestigious Youth American Grande Prix in Philadelphia. All received high marks including Top 10 awards! They will be returning to the YAGP in November.

St. George Preschool A Safe Place for Growth

Alisha Cardenas of Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre But she’s not too busy to encourage new dancers, whether they dream of soaring across the Broadway stage or just want to experience the joy of ballet. The Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre is currently enrolling for all ages and levels for the 2022-2023 school year. “There’s something for everybody here,” Cardenas says. Central NJ Ballet Theatre, 221 Broad Street, Florence. www.cnjballet. com.

At St. George Preschool, we believe that each child has an innate drive for exploring, discovering, communicating, and learning. Our purpose is to provide a safe, warm, and nurturing environment for children to develop this innate drive to the fullest, and become life-long learners. Our goal is to help each child develop his/her individual interests, creativity and potential at their own pace by providing a wide variety of fun and age-appropriate activities and materials. In addition to the developmental goals in the areas of math, language, science, cognitive skills, motor skills, etc., stipulated by the state, the school aims to promote learning skills for life. At the same time, we aim to enhance the child’s social, moral, cultural and spiritual growth through group interactions, uplifting stories, cultural events and gentle guidance. Since “a healthy mind is in a healthy body” as the Ancient Greeks said, we provide a huge indoors gym and a beautiful play ground with regular physical activities.

We offer high quality academic English programs for Preschool (3 years and potty trained) and Pre-K (must be 4 years old by October 1 of school year). Early morning care, after care, and enrichment programs are also available. We are part of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and state licensed by the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services. Our experienced staff has

a passion building a foundation for a life-long love of learning. We are truly a family and we treat your children as such. For more information regarding our program, please visit our website. Stuart Country Day School Designed for Her: The Value of an All-Girls High School Education

by Dr. Marissa Muoio, Head of Upper School At Stuart, we deeply value an individualized approach to education. Here, your daughter is known, respected, and ready for success. Our enduring mission — “to prepare young women for lives of exceptional leadership and service within the framework of the Sacred Heart goals” — focuses on how we continue to define student achievement: producing educated women who are independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence. It drives everything we do and it’s how we live our life throughout campus. We know that a rigorous, independent education can change the world. We have done it ourselves with over 50 years of alumnae who have fervently lived out our school’s mission from the Peace Corps to

the board room to the director’s chair. From their early days here, our girls learn how to approach challenges with confidence while nurturing and celebrating their own individuality. Our students have a supportive environment in which to thrive, cultivate their minds and refine their voices while less burdened by the discrimination they continue to experience in the larger world. Here at Stuart, our exceptional high school program is intentionally tailored to the way girls learn best — through collaboration, discussion, and individualized attention. Our curriculum is dynamic, intentional and collaboratively constructed, offering

relevant classes and individualized opportunities that allow students to excel in many ways and stages of their learning. Whether Stuart students are experimenting in their STEM classes, competing on the playing field, leading a club meeting, editing a publication, or performing on stage, they are engaged in learning that is creative, collaborative, and inspired; students learn to think critically and to solve problems through multiple lenses no matter the task. When considering the difference between co-ed and single-gender education for your daughter, I encourage you to consider the

following: ● Does your daughter’s current school encourage her to find her voice? ● Does your daughter’s school inspire girls to pursue their passion even in areas traditionally dominated by men? ● Do the girls in your daughter’s school hold leadership positions? Are they class president? Are they the editor-in-chief of the yearbook? ● Do they value girls’ athletic teams as much as the boys’ teams? We know that the results of an all-girls upper school experience are remarkable. Our Stuart students continue to impress with their college matriculations and choices that are not only exceptional and competitive among peer schools but are a genuine reflection of students’ individual talents and career aspirations that have been nurtured by faculty and staff that truly knows their students .” At Stuart, she is known ... she is confident ... and she is unstoppable. Come join us to learn more.” Stuart Country Day School, 1200 Stuart Road, Princeton. 609-9212330. www.stuartschool.org. See ad, page 11.

Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies – some are the result of a disease like diabetes, while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still others are the result of an injury or compression on the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing that their symptoms may be due to Peripheral Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get worse, including numbness, burning or tingling sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment options have been limited to a small assortment of pain medications, which can lead to further issues. Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.

Plainsboro artist takes solo flight at Zuzu Gallery By Thomas Kelly

Sherri Andrews is a person where the artist inside came out later—in bursts of movement and color. But before that—and her solo exhibition at the Zuzu Gallery in Lawrence Township through Saturday, Aug. 27—she was a young woman in East Orange who hustled her way through Drew University and Harvard Business School and promised herself she would make enough money to be comfortable and not financially worry. “I worked intensely in the financial field, commuting into NYC daily and raising my son, along with my husband (Daniel Luchansky), who was also in the financial business. With a grueling commute and demanding job, I had very little free time and hadn’t realized I might have a hidden talent,” Andrews says. But after 10 years as a hedge fund portfolio manager at Quattro Global Capital and another seven years at another hedge fund, Andrews decided that 2017 was a good time for her to get out of finance and into something that had crept into her life four years before. “I went on vacation with a friend in 2013

The class was full, but I asked the instructor, a former art professor, to try to squeeze me in, which he graciously did.

In that 90-minute class, I was transformed. It was like a spiritual experience when I picked up the paint brush. After that, I was hooked.” Susan Rizzo, the director of the Law-

renceville-based Zuzu Gallery, which represents Andrews locally, says, “I first saw Sherri Andrews’ work at a pop up show in Princeton. When I opened Zuzu Gallery in September, 2021, I knew I wanted to offer her work. I love her paper collages, and the new figures on the marble tiles.” About her own work, Andrews says, “I work in a number of unconventional media, including alcohol inks, paper collage, and mixed media. I started my journey in art with watercolors but then saw photos of alcohol inks on Pinterest with their strikingly bold colors and flowing paint. I started experimenting with the medium but applied watercolor techniques while adding textures and heavy layers. In 2018 I entered the juried art show at the Ellarslie and was awarded the Ben Whitmire Award for Emerging Artists and was honored that the museum purchased my painting.” Andrews also says she is self-taught. “I watched a lot of YouTube videos. I am not formally trained in art. I studied economics in college and went to business school. When I started painting, I would paint along with the instructors I liked on YouTube. I also bought books so that I could learn certain techniques and took a few

classes locally. Mostly I just experimented. There are no rules in art, right? In many ways, not having formal training allows me to be more free-spirited in my art.” A Plainsboro resident, Andrews paints in an oversized studio in what in real estate terms is called a bonus room — a large room over the garage with a pool table left in it by the previous owners. On a recent day, Andrews can be seen sporting an Everlast T-shirt while working on several pieces at a time. Around her are collages and paintings of figures, land and seascapes, abstracts, florals, and many of women and women dancing. Though not offering details, Andrews alludes to the difficulties a woman encounters in her previous field of finance. Sharing more of her approach, Andrews says, “My art tends to use bold colors and communicates a sense of joy, of letting go,” she says. “I let the paint flow, layer papers, and use materials in unconventional ways. It is a meditative process for me where I get lost in the art of creating, and I think the viewer senses that. I transport the viewer to my imaginary world.” Additionally, she says she collects “inspiration and photos everywhere: a field trip to a local flower farm, a photograph of rolling hills, floral arrangements, ballerinas in motion. My camera roll is full of inspiration for color combinations and compositions.

Works by Artist Sherri Andrews, such as the above ‘World Opens Up,’ are on display through Aug. 27 at Zuzu Gallery in Lawrenceville Much of my artwork, however, is derived from imagination and memory. It is an intuitive process of laying down paint and paper while paying attention to how the textures and color feel. I tend to work quickly and then come back to it after a few days.” A huge rack in her studio holds 200 rolls of handmade paper that Andrews uses for her collages, yet she laments that some of her favorites are not to be found anymore, as certain pattern papers become obsolete

or hard to come by. The handmade paper collages are sometimes joined by acrylic paint on the workpiece. She says she recently began working with handmade papers collected from around the world. “I find inspiration in the patterns and textures. The beautifully rich papers can provide ideas for paintings. One collector remarked that my paper collages look like my alcohol ink paintings.” She also likes experimenting with media. “My favorites right now are paper and acrylics. You could describe me as an ‘art supply junkie.’ I love trying new materials and tools. I have dabbled in oils but find them challenging, especially color mixing. My colorful landscapes, florals, and dancers have been well-received. I can become attached to some of my figurative pieces, the drawings come alive, so it can be difficult to sell those except to close friends.” “I also gravitated from watercolors to alcohol inks, and my paintings stood out. It was easier to make art uniquely my own by using different materials. When I was running tight for a deadline for an art donation, a friend suggested that I cut up a giclee of one of my watercolors and make a boldcolored collage. That started me on my collage journey. Sometimes I combine ink, fiber paste, acrylics, and, most recently, gold leaf with my collages. I am not afraid

to take risks, and that inevitably involves some failure.” Andrews credits the West Windsor Arts Council for helping her become involved with showing and presenting. “I was a volunteer at WWAC for over a year before I was asked to join the board. After serving on the board, I was elected president. One of the projects for which I am most proud is hosting a fundraiser honoring Priscilla Algava. Priscilla was my teacher and mentor, as well as a talented artist. Part of the mission of local arts organizations is to support artists. That fundraiser, which was hugely successful, also made her very happy in the last few months of her life. The proceeds were devoted to subsidize art classes for those who couldn’t otherwise afford to take classes.” During her tenure on the board at WWAC, Andrews bring some of her former life to the organization. “My business skills have been a welcome addition to the nonprofit sector, bringing a more ‘bottom line’ perspective. I also donate artwork to support local causes including Homefront, Arts Council of Princeton, and West Windsor Arts Council.” She also credits her husband. “(He) is my right hand person and my biggest supporter. He helps with all my shows; curator, art critic, handyman, and logistics. I couldn’t do it without him.”

What’s in a name? A West Windsor history tour PAUL LIGETI

WEST WINDSOR CHRONICLES

Each month, the Historical Society of West Windsor—a nonprofit that preserves and promotes local history—publishes a column covering our town’s rich heritage. This article explores name origins in West Windsor Also—2022 is West Windsor’s 225th birthday! The Historical Society is leading dozens of commemorative community projects and events throughout the year. We also released a full-length “West Windsor History Book,” covering our town’s story from the prehistoric era to the present day. Visit westwindsorhistory. com/book to learn more.

Indigenous influence

Drive around West Windsor’s suburban streets and you may think that our town is relatively young. But don’t be fooled— our community has many centuries of history which are revealed in many ways—including names. The area’s first inhabitants were Native Americans, who came here many thousands of

years ago. They were called the Leni Lenape—meaning “original/common person” —and lived in a territory called the Lenapehoking, which encompassed all of New Jersey. The Lenape consisted of numerous, mostly-autonomous tribes, whose names still linger in the landscape. The Raritan tribe lived around a river valley several dozen miles to the north. You can surmise where the Hackensacks resided. And here in West Windsor were the Assanpinks. Their name means a “rocky, watery place”—an apt description of the Assunpink Creek, which runs through much of southern West Windsor. Another indigenous name is less wellknown: Tatamy’s Swamp. This wetland, located just to the east of the Clarksville Road railroad bridge, was apparently owned before 1738 by a Lenape named Moses Tunda Tatamy. He was a critical intermediary between the Lenape and colonists during the mid-1700s. Both Clarksville Road and North Post Road were often called Tatamy’s Swamp Road in the 1700s and 1800s. The Lenape very likely used the Assunpink Creek for food, transportation, and recreation, as they did with West Windsor’s other major waterway—the

Millstone River, so named because it turned the waterwheels of many colonial-era mills.

Acquisition and settlement Let’s now explore West Windsor’s first colonial landowners. In 1693, famed Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, bought over 6,500 acres of land directly east of the Stony Brook, sandwiched between the Assunpink Creek to the south and the Millstone River to the north. Four years later, a British goldsmith named David Lyell purchased over 4,500 acres directly east of Penn’s tract. Penn-Lyle Road was constructed along the division line between their two tracts in the 1860s. Penn and Lyell were absentee landowners, and it wasn’t until the 1730s that the first large wave of colonial settlers came to the West Windsor area. Some of these early farming families still live in the area—such as the Schencks, Covenhovens (now Conovers), Perrines, Tindalls, and more. Starting c. 1731, they resided in old Windsor Township—presumably named after the town of Windsor, England. Windsor Township encompassed all of West Windsor, East Windsor, Robbinsville

and Hightstown, as well as all of Princeton southeast of Nassau Street and slivers of Millstone and Monroe Townships. It dissolved in 1797 when it split into two halves: East and West Windsor. Through the mid-1700s, Windsor/West Windsor families formed small farming villages. The community of Penns Neck is located around Washington Road and Route 1, and, as far back as 1737, was named after William Penn (“Neck” referring to the land itself, such as in the term “neck of the woods”). Dutch Neck (South Mill Road and Village Roads East/ West) refers to its original settlers’ roots in the Netherlands, and is a term dating back to at least the 1780s. Edinburg—another mid-1700s community at the intersection of Old Trenton and Edinburg Roads—was originally called “Assanpink” due to its proximity to the creek of the same name, and there is evidence there was a Lenape settlement nearby centuries ago. However, it received a name change some time in the mid-1800s, reputedly to honor a popular local who came from Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh. You almost certainly know of Clarksville Road, but did you know that it was also

once called the “Clarksville-Grovers Mill” Road? That’s because it connected two more villages. The first was Clarksville, a long-gone farming hamlet at Quakerbridge Road and Route 1, and named—by the 1820s - after the Clarke family. The other was Grovers Mill, so called because Joseph H. Grover bought its namesake grist mill at the intersection of Cranbury and Clarksville Roads in 1868. Grovers Mill didn’t always have its name, however—it was called, in succession starting in the 1770s, “Bergen’s Mill,” “Bear Mill,” and “Schwenger’s Mill,” depending on who owned it. Two 1830s-era West Windsor villages grew up along the Delaware and Raritan Canal. The first, “Princeton Basin” (AKA “Canal Basin”), was once a thriving industrial port at Alexander Road and the Canal, and featured two “turning basins,” allowing barges to load/unload cargo. “Port Mercer,” at Quakerbridge Road and the Canal, was similar. Originally called “Clarksville Basin”, it later became “Port Windsor” and finally “Port Mercer,” honoring Brigadier-General Hugh Mercer, a compatriot of George Washington who died of his wounds sustained at the Jan. 3, 1777 battle of Princeton. Mercer County was also named after him. Finally, we have the 1860s-era Princeton Junction—centered on the “junction” (intersection) of the equally-old Northeast

Corridor and Dinky train line into Princeton.

Roads

Some of our town’s oldest roads indicated which communities they connected—such as the 1740s-era Princeton-Hightstown Road, or the pre-1770s Quakerbridge Road, which linked Quaker meeting houses in the communities of Princeton and Crosswicks and whose bridge ran over the Assunpink Creek. Also notable are Old Trenton Road (linking Trenton to Cranbury) and the early-1800s Route 1—otherwise known as Brunswick Pike, a shortening of the Trenton-New Brunswick Turnpike. Other roads speak to property lines, such as Line Road in southern West Windsor, alluding to a c. 1690s-era property line of a tract of land owned by Augustine Gordon. Others honor longtime families—such as Cubberly, Conover, and Roszel Roads, Slayback and Hendrickson Drives, Mather Avenue, and Fisher Place. North Post and South Post Road also fit this category, and the 1700s-era Post family house still stands at 18 North Post Road. Yet more avenues indicate industries, such as North and South Mill Roads, and others the environment—Meadow, Meadowbrook, Bear Brook, and Rabbit Hill Roads.

Schools and suburbs

The naming of Dutch Neck School should seem obvious. But what about Maurice Hawk? Well, that’s named after longtime Township Treasurer and West Windsor School Board member, Maurice H. Hawk. Thomas Roy Grover Middle School memorializes a local farm-boyturned-soldier, killed in the Vietnam War in 1969. And High School South was originally just called the West WindsorPlainsboro High School, before High School North was opened in 1997. High School South sits just northwest of Princeton Colonial Park—one of West Windsor’s first post-War suburbs (late 1950s), whose name combines historical roots with the pedigree of our more famous neighbor to the northwest. Even older than this is Berrien City—a 1910s/20s-era suburban community just south of the train station, whose name— and streets (Lillie Street, Emil Street, Berrien Avenue, and more)—memorialize the family of its creators, Montgomery Scott Berrien and his son, Alexander. Most other suburban names—Dutch Neck Estates, Canal Pointe Boulevard, Old Mill Farms, Princeton Oaks, and more—were developers’ references to local history or topography. Particularly relevant to the Historical Society of West Windsor is the Southfield

Meadows development, which sits right next to the West Windsor History Museum (50 Southfield Road). There, Zaitz Farm Road and Benjamin Court reference the Zaitz family, who owned the land before the 1990s. Others, such as Jewell Drive, allude to a much-older 1700s/1800s-era local family.

What next?

The prior paragraphs are just a sampling of the different local stories that names evoke. There are countless more: Bernt Midland Boulevard and Ron Rogers Arboretum (both referencing local community organizers and conservationists/open space advocates), the Stanley R. Perrine Public Works facility (a former Mayor), Tindall and Appelget Farms, and much more. A full analysis would warrant a small booklet. But what will the future bring? Hopefully, our town’s nomenclature will be managed in a way that prompts future inquisitive minds to explore West Windsor’s story and enrich their connection to our historic town.
