Her ability to see it and make that pass is another component she brings.” Beetel is predominantly a midfielder, but has always been versatile. When asked about playing all over the field this year she shrugged and said, “I’ve been doing that for a long time, wherever the coach needs me. I’m pretty comfortable with that.” Her comfort comes from having been in the middle of the field for so long. “As a midfielder you need to know both positions,” Beetel said. “On defense, I just have to leave the offense part of it out of my mind. I definitely like midfield the most; either outside or center because you’re always in the action. But I’ll go anywhere.”

So, where will she go this year? “I have a vision of where I think she’ll go but we have to see where our pieces fall,” Diaz said. IQ alone, however, can only help in the broadcast booth where a person merely has to analyze the game. There’s a little more needed to perform on the field and Beetel also possesses the physical skills and instincts necessary to move about the pitch. “She has great ballwork skills, and she has the ability to make that right pass,” Diaz said. “Where Bustling Beetel a key cog for Irish soccer

Historical society to continue Bonaparte-related programming

In the aftermath of Napoleon Bonaparte’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, many of his siblings and followers fled Europe by any means neces sary. With the family dynasty in ruins, Napoleon was captured by British troops and exiled to the island of St. Helena in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, where he spent the remainder of his Thelife.fate of his oldest brother, Joseph, was more fortunate in that he boarded a merchant ves sel under an assumed name and in disguise for America where he spent almost the next two decades in self exile. Ironically, the bluffs of Bordentown were chosen as the site to build his palatial country estate and filled it with personal belongings that were fitted for a king. When he left the United States forever in 1839, he gave away many of his valuables to his friends. After his death in Florence, Italy in 1844, it was a matter of time before the rest of his valuables and house hold belongings would be sold at public auction. In 1845 and 1847, Bordentown residents and interested parties were able to marvel and purchase such treasures.Overthe past several decades, the Bordentown Historical Soci ety has been extremely grateful to have received some of these important relics through gener ousPeterdonations.Tucci, one of the direc tors of the historical society and the largest private collec tor of Joseph Bonaparte arti facts in the country, reflects on the former king of Naples and Spain in this manner: “During the almost 20 years that Joseph Bonaparte resided in Borden town, his estate at Point Breeze served as the epicenter for Franco-American relations. He had a bold impact on American culture by popularizing Pictur esque landscaping and expos ing Americans to his vast col lection of European paintings. He also helped to popularize Empire style furniture in the US as evidenced by the significant amount of such furniture which is still used in the White House to this day.”

For the next several months, a series of distinguished speak ers will explain the importance of this collection: Gregg Perry, a restoration specialist, will speak about Empire furniture on Sept. 10; Dr. Thomas Ombrello, a pro fessor of biology at Rider Uni versity, will talk about “Napo leon’s Weeping Willow” and other historic trees on Oct. 1; Tony DiGerolamo, a noted author, will give a presentation and book signing on Joseph Bonaparte and his encounter with the Jersey Devil on Oct. 8.

Jobes’ family moved to Allentown when she was in middle school. When kids saw her mom, who is half Japanese, they poked fun and threatened to throw eggs at their house. Young Brenna told the kids that that was her mom, and asked them, “Why would you want to harm someone who looks different than you?” Her eyes soften when telling this specific experience, and Jobes said that the situation really formed her and caused her to really respect others and encourage others to do the same. This spirit carries through today. Jobes is living her life out loud and is a founder of the Bordentown Pride Parade, now in its second year. This year’s event drew a reported 300 participants and was a family-friendly success. Growing up playing sports, especially soccer, was a good way to get to know many people in the surrounding areas. Attending high school at Notre Dame in Lawrence, then finishing her final two high school years and graduating from Steinert High School in Hamilton, Jobes was always outgoing but caring.

“My grandmother became a U.S. citizen when she was in her sixties. She didn’t have to, but because she appreciated this country, it was very important to her.”

“Both township and city cops were so supportive that day. That’s one important thing I wanted to say. So many people said how safe they made us all feel. Our city government was also so supportive. There were a handful, I think six, white

She also does live reports about what is going on in Bordentown. “I like to spread positivity, information and peace,” she says. “I focus on the positive. Social media can turn so negative with the keyboard warriors and complainers. I wish the Btown News to be all positive and a place where people can have a smile or a laugh.”

“My Japanese grandmother taught me how to cook, as I was always hanging around in her kitchen. She learned how to cook American style from the old school Betty Crocker cookbooks that were so popular during that time. I still love that style of simple foods, comfort foods.”

While Jobes is quick to poke fun at herself, she also provides useful information to the town’s people. She gives shout outs to the municipal workers, police, fire and first responders. She provided insight into the candidates’ positions for the last election cycle.

“My Japanese grandmother taught me a lot about tolerating people, especially people who may be a little different. I learned a lot from her. She also sent me to school with sushi for lunch! In the eighties, sushi was still quite unknown in these parts,” she says. Being personable has also helped Jobes in another area of her life. She is a reporter of area news, mostly in Bordentown and mostly on social media. Jobes is a co-administrator of the Bordentown City Facebook page, which has more the 10,000 followers. That is impressive, as the city itself has approximately 4,000 residents. Her real resident-facing page is Btown Live: News with Brenna, which is on Instagram. She describes this blog as “News and happenings around Bordentown City, Township and Jersey with a touch of humor. Just keeping it positive, happy and real” with the “news” being hyper local Bordentown happenings.Itallstarted when a small fire in downtown Bordentown, had people texting Brenna and asking her what was going on.

Community clean up days, suicide prevention hotlines, pet safety, pride events, town concerts, and nonprofit fundraisers and more are all shared on Jobes’ news channel. She is also a huge cheerleader for the police and local government. Jobes lauds the police support for the Pride Parade this year and last.

Common Myth #1: Childhood Teeth Will Straighten Out Over Time One such myth that leads to more complex orthodontic care down the line is that your child’s teeth will straighten out over time. Unfortunately, that is not the case. If their teeth start coming in crooked or off-center, they won’t naturally straighten themselves with time. The space for their teeth to come in doesn’t grow as they mature. If you leave these issues unattended, it could lead to more significant problems.

Growing up makes for a constantly evolving experience for children. Every year they change and grow into the person they are destined to become, and that extends to their oral health. From the first baby tooth to their adult teeth coming in later in their lives, managing your child’s dental health presents unique challenges for parents. With those challenges come a few myths involving childhood tooth development that can impact how you treat your child’s dental health.

Common Myth #3: There Is a Right Age for Orthodontic Care

Where Do Orthodontic Issues Come From? In most cases, a child’s orthodontic problems stem from their

Common Myth #2: Orthodontic Treatments Are Purely Cosmetic While most people associate orthodontic treatments with getting braces as a teenager, that procedure does much more than merely straighten teeth to help you look better. Getting your jaw and teeth back into proper alignment has a cascading effect on your oral health. It helps improve your biting, chewing, and even speaking ability.

Many parents believes there is a specific age at which it’s appropriate to bring their children in for orthodontic care. The perceived minimum age for a child to receive orthodontic care is around 12-13 or right when they reach high school. However, getting your child such care earlier can help avoid getting braces and fixing issues before they worsen. In reality, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your children should get an orthodontic checkup no later than age seven. Once they hit that age, their mouth will have a nice balance between their baby and permanent teeth. This window of time allows for an accurate orthodontic evaluation to determine where preventative care is enough or if additional action is required.

Presenting ‘Kaleidoscope’ September 23-25 at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center American Repertory Ballet (ARB) launches its 2022-2023 season with Kaleidoscope for four performances at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, September 23-25. An innovative program featuring never-before-seen work, Kaleidoscope includes a unique collaboration between choreographer Da’ Von Doane, formerly of Dance Theatre of Harlem, and New Jersey-based visual artist Grace Lynne Haynes, whose creations have graced the cover of The New Yorker magazine. A recent graduate of the Rutgers Art & Design MFA program, Haynes will be designing scenic elements and costumes for Doane’s new ballet, a partnership amplifying both artists’ creative talents. About the piece, Doane says, “This work excavates the interplay between states of mind and processing the nature of change.”

At St. George Preschool, we believe that each child has an innate drive for exploring, discovering, communicating, and learning. Our purpose is to provide a safe, warm, and nurturing environment for children to develop this innate drive to the fullest, and become life-long learners. Our goal is to help each child develop his/her individual interests, creativity and potential at their own pace by providing a wide variety of fun and age-appropriate activities and materials. In addition to the developmental goals in the areas of math, language, science, cognitive skills, motor skills, etc., stipulated by the state, the school aims to promote learning skills for life. At the same time, we aim to enhance the child’s social, moral, cultural and spiritual growth through group interactions, uplifting stories, cultural events and gentle guidance. Since “a healthy mind is in a healthy body” as the Ancient Greeks said, we provide a huge indoors gym and a beautiful play ground with regular physical activities. We offer high quality academic English programs for Preschool (3 years and potty trained) and Pre-K (must be 4 years old by October 1 of school year). Early morning care, after care, and enrichment programs are also available. We are part of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and state licensed by the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services. Tanaka, a beloved ARB Company dancer, made her choreographic debut with ARB last season, and Howells is a graduate of the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University and Mercer County Community College, where he received degrees in Jazz Studies. He also accompanies classes at Princeton Ballet School, as well as Princeton, Rutgers and Rider University.“WhenI saw the Dali painting for the first time, it was fascinating to see how two completely different animals were reflecting each other in perfect symmetry. I found it incredibly unique and mysterious,” says Tanaka. “It inspired me to create a piece about two different types of reflections: selfreflection and literal reflection.” The program also features Claire Davison’s enchanting “Bewitched” set to Ella Fitzgerald’s iconic vocals. A dancer with American Ballet Theatre, Davison’s piece premiered at the Boulder Arts Outdoors Festival in 2021 and ARB performed the piece earlier this year as part of its Mask-erade Gala. About American Repertory Ballet. Led by Artistic Director Ethan Stiefel, American Repertory Ballet (ARB) is New Jersey’s preeminent ballet company, presenting classical repertory alongside new and existing contemporary work. ARB is a founding resident company of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center while also performing in major venues across New Jersey and beyond. The company has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and other major foundations and leaders in the field as a prominent force in the field of dance. Princeton Ballet School, ARB’s official school, attracts talent from around the world while providing opportunities for local students of all ages, such as through its award-winning DANCE POWER program. www.arballet.org.

The School’s multiple locations allow for convenient access to a range of classes. With a strong focus on classical ballet, PBS also offers elective courses for upper level students such as contemporary, jazz, character, partnering, and flamenco. PBS has a “Hand in Hand” dance class for young children and their caregivers, and children can also take “Tap, Math & Music” to incorporate elements of tap dance, mathematics, and musical rhythms. Live music accompanies each class, enabling students to better understand the relationship between music and dance while helping them develop a sense of musicality. Children as young as age 3 learn the fundamentals of dance, develop spatial awareness, and have an outlet for creative expression.

The Princeton studios are centrally located in Princeton Shopping Center with four studios and a dance library. All locations are wheelchair accessible.AtPrinceton Ballet School, students may have extensive performance opportunities, such as the opportunity to participate in The Nutcracker with American Repertory Ballet in major theaters across New Jersey. This professional production has been a beloved holiday tradition for decades, featuring an orchestra and choir at select venues. significant evidence has shown that it’s safe, effective and long-lasting. It has significantly reduced cervical cancer and other forms of cancer in both men and women. Who should get the HPV vaccine? Recommendations at first included only females but have expanded to anyone in appropriate age ranges regardless of gender. The vaccine should be given to preteen’s ages 11 to 12, can be started as early as 9 and is recommended through age 26. The ideal is to get doses into patients’ systems before they become sexually active. It’s also available for people ages 27 to 45 if their doctors think it would be beneficial. Should anyone be hesitant? You should avoid the HPV vaccine if you have an allergy to any of its components or had an adverse reaction to a previous dose. The best advice is to speak with your primary care provider and/or a gynecologist or pediatrician to know if you or your child is a candidate. In general, the vaccine is safe and most people can getToit.

One concerning example is the vaccine that protects against human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection that tens of millions of Americans have contracted, often during their teens and early 20s. HPV can lie dormant in the body for decades and has been linked to cancer— especially cervical cancer, for which HPV is thought to cause as many as 91 percent of U.S. cases.“HPV is a very common sexually transmitted infection that has become more prevalent in the last decade or two,” Dr. Yogarajah says. “Some HPV strains are higher-risk than others, but the high-risk types cause about 5 percent of all worldwide cancers, most commonly cervical cancer, and are infecting younger and younger patients.”TheHPV vaccine, Gardasil 9, protects against nine high-risk strains. Dr. Musunuru explains more about protection and why it’s so important. How does the HPV vaccine protect? The nine strains it covers are known to cause several forms of cancer. Two strains in particular, HPV 16 and 18, cause cervical cancer as well as anal, vulvar and penile cancer. The vaccine exposes the body to an antigen—an inactive component of the virus—and prompts the body to build antibodies that strengthen immunity to it. Then if you’re exposed to actual HPV, your body is better able to fight it, forestall infection and ultimately prevent cancer. What is the HPV vaccine’s track record? It was introduced in the U.S. in 2006, and in the 16 years since,

Turn Transitions into Games Making a game out of stressful transitions can help both you and your child reframe your mindsets and reduce stress. Asking your child “Can you hop like a bunny while you get your school things together?” or playing a listening game like “Simon Says” can help your child develop executive function skills such as impulse control. You could also give him or her choices. For example, tell your child “You can put your shoes on yourself or I can help you,” which lets him or her feel a sense of autonomy and control when choosing the desired solution. Take Turns One thing younger children often struggle with is the concept of sharing. Adults can forget that to a young child sharing implies giving something up, Peters said. If your child struggles to share, try introducing the concept of taking turns: “It’s Mariah’s turn for the slide. When she’s done then you can go,” for example. Help your child practice how to have conversations with playmates about taking turns. Play a ‘What if’ Game Help school-age children build a growth mindset by problem-solving responses to common friendship issues. Ask your child “What would you do if…?” and help him or her practice responses. Thinking of responses ahead of time gives your child a rehearsed playbook to choose from in the moment. The more he or she practices these responses, the less you will see unwanted behaviors such as yelling or hitting. By giving children the autonomy to choose their own responses, you demonstrate your trust in them, which can give children a powerful sense of their own abilities to act maturely. When thinking about back-toschool season, most people naturally think of academics. However, it’s just as important to focus on social and emotionalChildrenskills.ofall ages are still learning to manage their emotions and get along with others. As they learn these skills, behaviors that make academic learning more challenging for everyone else in the classroom may be seen. “Social and emotional skills are crucial to a child’s academic success, but they aren’t inherent,” said Carter Peters from KinderCare’s inclusion services team. “Teachers tell us again and again that starting the school year with a grasp on social emotional learning is just as important as knowing academic concepts. Children who are struggling to manage their emotions and transition into the classroom may not be able to focus on Consideracademics.”these three skills families can teach their children before school starts to help build friendships.

“She is amazing,’ Fonseca says. “She is the most selfless person you will meet. She is not religious or political. She just wants to help people succeed and for Bordentown to be happy and thriving. She encouraged us to open a storefront, and even helped us find our current location. Brenna is terrific. ” Jobes says that since she has been interviewing people, she has learned much that she never knew. “I have learned that people like to get involved and to help each other. I have many followers from outside of Bordentown City. I hope they feel the same way that I do. That getting involved can bring a smile and make a difference,” she says.

One new business owner cannot say enough about Brenna Jobes and the positivity she brings. Steven Fonseca of Turtle Beans Coffee Roasters on Farnsworth Avenue appreciates the work Jobes does to boost the town.

Upcoming events that Jobes is spearheading are a Community Clean Up Day and the second annual Lanternfly Murder Pub Crawl, scheduled for Sept. 18. Last year the tongue in cheek but environmentally aware event, drew around 80 Bordentown City residents who participated in the friendly competition of going around the city to kill as many lanternflies as they could for prizes donated by local businesses. Every other minute of this interview she is touting a business in Bordentown, saying how much they contribute to the town. “I like to post and report on the small businesses. They are the backbone of the town. I live over one of Bordentown’s many fabulous restaurants. I live right downtown, and this is my spy perch. I see what goes on. I love to report on the small businesses and what they are doing. They need it. They worked so hard during the pandemic to keep things going. Bordentown has the small town vibe that everybody is searching for. People come to the restaurants, or shopping, the street fairs, Halloween parades and other events. They see how nice it is, and they wish to be a part of it,” she says.

“It was definitely good because it was similar to the high school level,” Beetel said. “I was playing up and playing older kids who were in high school, so it really made me step up my game.”

She started as a forward before being moved to midfield. The experience helped prepare Cam for Notre Dame, since she was playing against more experienced competition.

“I was surprised, I was just hoping for JV at most,” Beetel said. “I was really glad I made varsity. It was definitely scary at first but the team was really nice. They brought us together pretty quickly and it once again made me step up my game to match their level. So it was good for my game. Beetel will be a key cog for the Irish, who are coming off an 11-5-2 season. Despite heavy graduation losses, Notre Dame still returns a strong core group from last year, including juniors Brynn Fitzpatrick, Emily Javick and Hannah Neville, who are also from Bordentown.

“Hannah is another returning varsity player who stepped up and played in the back for us as an outside back last year,” Diaz said. “She’s going to be a key asset in solidifying not only our defense but also our midfield as well. She’ll provide another player who can play multiple positions on the field.”

Edgar N. Peppler Jr. coach was immediately impressed by Beetel her freshman year. “I had the opportunity to coach her that spring, and I saw that mentality and the skills she brought,” Diaz said. “Then I saw she also played soccer, which was great. All of those skills transcended from one sport to the other. She’s a three-sport athlete, it allows you to have different skill sets as opposed to just one sport where it’s exclusive skill sets.”

Beetel returned to the pitch last year and collected two goals, including an important one in a 2-0 victory over Lawrence. As her playing time grew, she was able to become somewhat of a team leader even as a sophomore. “Cam is a fantastic player but more importantly a fantastic person,” Diaz said. “She understands how to work really hard, get the best out of herself and her teammates. She’s someone her teammates rely on in all aspects; so that aspect she brings to our program is invaluable.”Beetel’s interaction with teammates could not be stressed enough by the coach.“She’s always smiling with a positive attitude and she’s always there for her teammates,” Diaz said. “She’s someone they confide in; or she will go out of her way to help someone else. That’s a great component to our program, we’re trying to build that within all levels.” Senior defender Ryan Carr admires Beetel as both a player and person. “Cam always steps up,” Carr said. “She has great foot skills, and gives 110 percent. She’s always there picking up everyone.”Beetelsays she enjoys having so many girls from her hometown on the team with her, as much as Diaz also enjoys having“Brynnthem.isa defensive player and Emily is more offensive minded,” the coach said of Fitzpatrick and Javick. “They’ll be on opposite ends of the field but they are complete threats. Especially Emily up top, she brings speed, she has great touches on the ball, she has an offensive mind, and she’s a very hard nosed player. Brynn is also hard nosed. In the back she will take anybody on, which is fantastic. There’s no fear with her.” And then there is Neville, who is in the mold of Beetel with her versatility.

Whether it pertains to our schedule or that of someone else, we are always looking at the clock. Nobody wants to be late, and impatience builds if we do. That’s the nature of time. Through the span of our existence, the need to measure time has gone from the development of the ancient sundials to the synchronization of digital clocks. Sur prisingly, time was taken for granted until a railroad man figured out a solution.

William Frederick Allen (1846-1915) was one of six children born to Joseph Warner Allen (1811-1862) and Sarah Burns Norcross (1815-1882) in Borden town. His father was a high-ranking civil engineer who was employed by the Cam den and Amboy Railroad as a contractor when he was only 20 years old. Although he was young, Joseph Allen’s services were also retained with the con struction of the Harper’s Ferry and Cum berland Railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the Long Island Railroad, the Erie Railroad, and the Dundee Water Works Plant in Passaic. In 1854, he was elected to represent Burlington County in the New Jersey Senate and served two terms under the Whig Party. Through his statesmanship, he was considered a viable candidate for governor until cir cumstances changed when the Civil War began.Instead, he was appointed to recruit and take command of the Ninth Regi ment, New Jersey Volunteers, which con sisted of 12 companies of 100 men each. For his efforts, he obtained the rank of colonel, and was presented with a sword as a token of appreciation from Gov. CharlesEmbarkingOlden.on an expedition aboard the ship Ann E. Thompson to meet Union Brigadier Gen. Ambrose Burnside, com mander the North Carolina Expedition ary Force, off the Hatteras Inlet, Allen and 11 other men, including the ship’s captain and surgeon, manned a surf-boat during a furious gale to report to Burn side inside a fort. After departing the meeting, as their vessel passed through the breakers, the churning waves capsized it. The men frantically clung to the hull as it rocked with violence. Unable to hang on, several men floated away from the boat. One van ished under the current. Allen and the surgeon drowned as well, but their bod ies were recovered an hour later by a schooner laden with troops that rescued the other men. Sewn in canvas, the bodies of the two men were eventually placed in coffins and shipped to the Trenton Statehouse by rail. Lying in repose in the center of New Jersey Senate Chamber, their coffins were draped with American flags as visi tors paid their final respects. Following this, the funeral cortege traveled to the train depot once, more as the surgeon’s remains were transported to his home in Paterson. Joseph Allen’s remains were transported to Bordentown for his funeral and burial. Two years later, an impressive 15-foot memorial of Pennsylvania marble was erected over his gravesite by surviv ing officers of his command. William F. Allen was 16 years old when his father died. Like his father, he enlisted for military duty at the outbreak of the war. He was promoted to first lieutenant of Company C, Second Regiment for his proficiency as a drill master, but left on account of the personal loss that brought him much sorrow. Like his father, he became a survey engineer for the Camden and Amboy Railroad. During the remainder of the war, he was the assistant survey engineer for the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricul tural Railroad and the Long Branch and Sea Shore Railroad. Following the war, he helped survey and construct the Pember ton and Hightstown Railroad.

From 1868 until 1872, he was in charge of maintenance of the West Jersey Rail road. This was an extremely productive period for him in that he drew plans for the town site of Wenonah and married Salem County native, Caroline Perry Yorke, in 1871. With marital bliss (and eventual birth of four sons), William decided to focus on matters behind the desk rather than in the field. The 1870s were perceived as the first real decade of railroad expansion. The completion of the Transcontinental Rail road in 1869 ignited a feverish inten sity that changed the vast landscape of the country forever. Cities and towns throughout states and western territories emerged practically overnight as thou sands of miles of track were laid by labor crews with picks, shovels, and mules. The decade that began with approxi mately 53,000 miles of track in operation, increased to 93,000 miles by decade’s end. As a result, 50 different standards from individual railroad companies were in use regarding train schedules. Individuals and scientists first pro posed their ideas on time reform in 1869, but never agreed on a uniform system. Three years later, the General Time Con vention was organized with the major challenge on finding a solution. William, who had a keen interest on the subject, was appointed editor of the popular “Offi cial Guide of the Railways” the same year. In 1875, he campaigned and was elected secretary of the General Time Convention. This was followed by the election of his position as secretary of the Southern Railway Time Convention in 1877. Eventually these conventions

William then pondered that perhaps the use of local time could be perma nently removed as well. In April 1883, he submitted his first report and plan to his constituents. Impas sioned arguments were fiercely debated for months among citizens, planners and experts, since the notion of change on a grand scale is never easy. By October, he tallied the votes from railroad managers. The majority had agreed to the new system with the Gen eral Time Convention officially adopting the standards. William’s resolution on the use of local time was also approved. Across the country, the transition of standard time took place on Nov. 18 at noon on the 75th meridian. Although time seemed to be at a standstill, the jit tery nerves of a few waited for signs of the Apocalypse. In reality, the whole affair proved to be anticlimactic. Allen took his family from their resi dence in South Orange (where they lived since the late 1870s) across the Hudson River to New York City to witness his tory. Standing before the Western Union office where the time ball was lowered, a heavy crowd of chapeau-wearing bystand ers heard the clap of noon resonate twice from nearby church steeples…once by the old time and once by the new time. Allen expressed jubilation in his stance. His assignment was almost complete. In April 1884, he presented his final report to the General Time Conven tion. He stated that most American citi zens did not complain about standard time, although there were still those that grudgingly remained loyal to local time. Some cities resisted as well, but most did not. Of the 100 largest cities, only 22 believed that the new system presented a burden on its people. Eventually, they too succumbed quietly to as opposition faded. Six months later, Allen was appointed by President Ches ter A. Arthur to serve as one of five U.S. delegates to the International Meridian Conference in Washington. At the conference, representatives from over 25 European nations attended and adopted standard time, which was based upon Greenwich Meridian time. Gradually, all the nations from across the globe began to accept this system. Despite this success, it wasn’t until 1918 that Congress officially adopted standard time.As the years rolled on, William Allen became involved in many organiza tions. He was a charter member of the American Railway Guild, member of the National Geographic Society, member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and of course, treasurer of the American Railway Association to name a few exam ples. In 1915, he died of a stroke in his South Orange home, with his family at his side. You can truly say that he has indeed earned reverence as Father Time.

In many cases, prostate cancer is found in men without symptoms. A blood test called PSA (prostate-specific antigen), which is often ordered by primary care providers as part of routine cancer screening, can often be the first sign of prostate cancer. Some prostate cancers can be detected by an abnormal prostate exam or by trouble with urination (frequent urination, trouble passing urine, sudden urgency to pass urine). Symptoms such as weight loss or bone pain can occur in men with advanced prostate cancer.

For all of my patients with active prostate cancer or at risk of recurrence of prostate cancer, I emphasize the importance of overall healthy lifestyle. This includes regular activity, ideally a structured exercise regimen, as well as maintaining a healthy weight. American Cancer Society guidelines include recommendations for exercise at least 150 minutes per week. Making good eating choices includes a diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and limited amounts of saturated fats and high calorie beverages. Paying attention to overall calorie intake is incredibly important as well. What is the prostate and what does it do? The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system. It is located between the bladder and the rectum and sits around the urethra, which is a tube the carries urine from the bladder to the penis. The prostate secretes fluid that is part of semen. Normally the size of a walnut, the prostate can grow larger as men get older. Not all enlargement of the prostate is related to cancer, as the prostate can enlarge due to a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). What are the symptoms of prostate cancer and how is it detected?
