Thomas Edison University to sell Washington painting
T
homas Edison State University has decided to sell its N.C. Wyeth painting “Reception to Washington on April 21, 1789, at Trenton On His Way To New York to Assume the Duties of the Presidency Of the United States.” The 17-foot-tall by 12-foot-wide oil-oncanvas mural by the famed American illustrator and painter was commissioned in 1930 by First Mechanics National Bank. N.C. Wyeth (1882 to 1945) is one of America’s most famous artists and illustrators, creating more than 3,000 paintings and murals and more than 100 books. He is also the father of famed American artist Andrew Wyeth and grandfather to another noted painter, Jamie Wyeth. The Brandywine, Pennsylvania, based artist visited Trenton and did research at the Trenton Free Public Library, which owns a portion of the ceremonial arch through which Washington passed and which is depicted in the mural. The dates seen on the image — Dec. 26, 1776, and Jan. 2, 1777 — commemorate Washington’s victories over British forces in the two Battles of Trenton. The events turned the tide in favor of the Americans in their struggle for independence from England.
The mural with a distinct Trenton theme survived several bank changes and established itself as a familiar and beloved downtown attraction. The last bank company to use the building was Wells Fargo. When it sold the building and moved in 2013, it was unable to accommodate the mural and its future in Trenton became uncertain. In 2013 officials representing Wells Fargo and the State of New Jersey, along with other community members, found a location for it at Thomas Edison State University, where the work was on loan and had remained on view on West State Street. In November, 2019, Wells Forgo transferred ownership of the painting. Its appraised value of $4 million made the painting the gift of largest financial value in the university’s history. “As a financial institution with more than 200 years of history in the state of New Jersey, we understand how important it is to maintain our historical treasures,” said Wells Fargo Region Bank President and Thomas Edison State University Board Member Carlos Arroyo during a presentation celebrating the 2019 transfer of ownership. “We’re thrilled that this heirloom was able to

Wyeth’s painting has been an honor and a privilege for Thomas Edison State University. The oil on canvas mural is a historical treasure, commissioned in 1930 and gifted to the University in 2019 by Wells Fargo Bank. While this was the most unique gift in the history of our university, gifts to the University are ultimately meant to further our mission to educate and empower working adults. It is our great hope that this painting will find a new home where it can be more widely viewed and enjoyed while at the same time help us further progress the TESU mission. We have received the Thomas Edison State University Board of Trustees’ approval to sell the painting and are exploring the regulations and options regarding its sale. We are preparing to announce an exciting new initiative for the City of Trenton very soon, which will be supported by a portion of the painting sale proceeds. In the meantime, we remain committed to applying non-traditional learning to empower lives, build careers and advance professions.”
I Am Trenton Foundation opens new grant cycle
T
he I Am Trenton Community Foundation has launched a $50,000 citywide grant cycle supporting grassroots projects addressing equity, social justice, and resilience. I Am Trenton is a volunteer-driven nonprofit in the City of Trenton focusing resources where they matter most — in local projects run by residents. Last year’s Citywide grants supported programs bringing together youth and local artists, telling important community stories and acknowledging shared struggles. Since 2010, IAT has invested
more than $350,000 in nearly 220 projects. “Due, in part, to the effects of the pandemic, our community has faced heightened uncertainty and trauma,” said IAT Board President Raj Manimaran. “This grant round seeks to empower Trentonians focused on advancing social justice initiatives, supporting health and wellness efforts, and promoting resilience overall.” Applicants for the 2022 Citywide Grants may request up to $5,000. Project activities should occur between September 2022 and September 2023. Deadline for applications is Friday, July 29, 2022. Awards will be announced in early September 2022. Applications now available in both English and Spanish on the I Am Trenton website. https://www.iamtrenton. org/citywide/. Applicants also have the option of submitting Project Details as a short essay OR as a short video. Evaluators will prioritize projects designed and led by Trenton residents, people of color, and individuals with lived experience of the issue the project is addressing. Applications will be accepted in the following categories: • Equity and social justice: Initiatives that address an equity or social justice problem, organize those affected, challenge the causes, bring new awareness, and/or create pressure for change. • Resiliency: Initiatives that enhance organizations or communities’ ability to address trauma. • Community Improvement: Projects that tackle a specific issue or challenge in the applicant’s community. Applicants are encouraged to attend a virtual pre-application workshops, providing additional information and an opportunity to ask questions. Ukrainian relief concert rescheduled for July 30

he LOTUS Project and Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey will present its COVID-related rescheduling of “O Vos Omnes” on Saturday, July 30, at 6 p.m. at St. Mary Byzantine Church at 335 Adeline Street. The fundraiser for Ukraine relief efforts features music for the Passion Week Tenebrae vigil service, Ukrainian art and folksongs, pieces for string instruments, and “Requiem for the Homeless” by active contemporary American composer Frank La Rocca, whose Ukrainian immigrant grandparents settled in Trenton in the early 20th century. Trenton exhibition explores lost and unfolding human potentials By Dan Aubrey
T
he “Potential Project: 21 Stories of Trenton” at Artworks Trenton features mainly mixed-media portraits loosely set on a unifying series of black frames set against a gold-yellow background. That the images of individuals of African heritage are finely rendered is evident. In fact, the simple grouping in the main gallery could pass as the exhibition’s end product. Yet, the artistry deepens when one follows the entrance posting that invites visitors to download a cellphone app that generates digital images and sounds connected to specific works. Then there’s the subject matter: the exhibition uses the faces of Trenton residents who experienced gun violence. The exhibit then leads the viewer into pondering what may have happened to the potentials of those who lost their lives. It also brings home that the survivors are attempting to sort out the potentials that are unfolding. That includes the exhibition’s lead artist, Bentrice Jusu. During a recent interview in her studio at Artworks Trenton, the 30-year-old Trenton multi-media artist, teacher, activist, and member of the City of Trenton Fire Department reflects on the experiences that turned her into a survivor. She also talks about the choices that can make one person a shooter — or as she puts it, “a monster” — and another a healer. At one instance, Jusu moves across her studio to a poster-sized board covered with photos of the faces of people who were victims of gun violence in Trenton. She points to one face and says he was the “gentleman” who was shot by police during the gunfight at the 2018 Art All Night festival. While not excusing him for bringing a gun to the festival, Jusu says she learned the young man had a history of incarceration and solitary confinement that started when he was a juvenile. “Imagine the psychological warfare in his head,” she says. “He’s hurting. There is no re-integration” from prison to society. Jusu stares at the board and says, “Those are things that are happening in our city.” But why stop there? As indicated by the news, shootings have been happening across the nation for some time. That includes one on September 12, 2016, in Orlando, Florida. That’s when and where that a vacationing Jusu decided to attend Latin Night at

So did a 29-year-old-man who chose to pull out an assault rifle and handgun, kill 49 people, and wound at least 53 others. It was called the deadliest mass shooting in the United States, until a year later, when 58 people were shot at a Las Vegas country music festival. Jusu says she was numb when she came back to Trenton after the shooting, “Sometimes I detached myself because of survivor guilt.” The founder of Both Hands, an independent Trenton arts education initiative for teens, and a teaching artist for the College of New Jersey, Jusu found herself additionally affected on September 10, 2016. That when 16-year-old Jahday Twisdale, one of Jusu’s students, was shot in Trenton. Sensing that the boy was killed while making videos, Jusu sought out the camera, viewed the footage, and began to wonder. “I thought about the potentials,” she says. “What could have happened if I didn’t make it out of that club that night? What comes of Jahday’s never-to-be-finished poetry and film projects?” The Trenton Central High School and Wake Forest University graduate — whose interest in filmmaking and photography was aided by her Liberian-born father’s filming events for other Liberians — says she started making choices that it turn started the project. One, she says, was realizing that “someone has to live to tell the stories.” That led to her decision to make notes and drawings and collect data — all with the idea of remembering victims and looking for solutions.
in the work and their potential too,” says Jusu. “I wanted a vastness. I’m a mixed media artist, poet, painter, and rapper. I wanted to have mixed medium. I wanted a vastness. I wanted to have that expressed in the exhibition, for it all to flow like the town and its potential.” She says other contributing artists include Wills Kinsley and Dean Innocenzi (aka Ras), whose painting of 9-year-old shooting victim Se’Quoya Bacon-Jones is the only gallery image not made by Jusu. Overall, she says, she depended on “Egoless collaboration” and “working with artists and engineers to talk out the vision, which included virtual reality. “I wanted virtual reality in it. It’s a whole world that’s super cool but so complicated, and I’m learning as I go. It added another depth. It is about potential. It’s the pull.” Reflecting on seeing the exhibition, Jusu shares mixed responses. “When you see (the exhibition) come to life, it’s exhilarating. Art is the life of life. That is how we love, and that’s how the souls talk, through art.” Yet there is also “the emotional weight. I try to make beauty out of someone’s tragedy. It’s quite the responsibility. And I remember feeling, ‘Am I doing the right thing?’” However, since more shootings have been happening lately, she says she feels “more empowered” to talk about gun violence and that she’s become a gun violence and mental health advocate. Arguing that many people are in denial about why they’re struggling, she says “it’s not okay, we’re hurting” and says the Potential Project website has a “clever map” that lists mental heath resources with a reference as to whether they “work or don’t work.” She also says the exhibition is designed to show the faces of victims and provide a sense of accountability for citizens to join together and stop this “solvable” problem that stops individuals and communities reaching their full, healthy potentials. “Everyone is affected and infected by the problem,” she says. In a statement, Jusu notes the Potential Project will grow after the current exhibit with additional stories and physical installations in the community. “Additional phases of the project will include installations around the city where specific stories can be viewed, and community conversations around healing, mental health services, and community-based trauma response efforts.”
She also began posting the images on the photo board, which in turn attracted the interest of another Trenton community activist, Iana Dikidjieva. The former acting director of the Trenton Downtown Association and the coordinator for Isles’ Trenton Neighborhood Restoration Campaign Program was intrigued by its potential to address various social needs. After Dikidjieva joined the Trenton Health Team as the director of grants and development, she and Jusu successfully applied to the Kresge Foundation for a grant to realize a THT project that could “change the discourse around violence, trauma, mental health, and healing in Trenton.” For the reasons already mentioned, Artworks Trenton became the obvious venue for the exhibition. Jusu says the choice to limit the exhibition to only 21 pieces — or stories — was inspired by Trenton’s tallest building, the 20-story Kingsbury Towers. “If you go to the top, you see all of Trenton,” she says. The 21st story is a mirror where visitors realize that their potential to make choices is also part of the story. She says those who people the exhibition were selected through a variety of means, including personal connections, students, or stories suggested by participating artists or mothers of victims. The Lawrence Hopewell Trail traverses two townships and covers more than 20 miles. While pedestrians and cyclists are free to navigate the area during the day, the latter can show up for an event of the celestial kind on Saturday, July 9, for a nighttime, six-mile route guided by the glow of the full moon. The 2022 Full Moon Bike Ride takes advantage of this natural illumination, creating what organizers describe on their website as an “out of this world experience” for riders. When the moon rises around 8:30 p.m., those 12 and older will embark on a brightly decorated route that takes about 45 minutes, all while classical musicians provide accompaniment along the route. Registration is required for all attendees regardless of participation in the ride itself. Onsite registration is available, but LHT recommends signing up in advance online via Eventbrite at eventbrite.com/e/ lawrence-hopewell-trail-full-moon-bike-rideregistration-367474635527. The Abbott Marshlands are named after Trenton-born archaeologist and naturalist Charles Conrad Abbott, who documented his experiences living near the marshlands and discovering artifacts. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the more than 3,000 acres of wetlands and bluffs run “adjacent to the Delaware River between Trenton and Bordentown,” according to their website.

Children under 12 are not permitted to participate in the ride for safety reasons, but are allowed to attend “accompanied and supervised by an adult.” Non-riders do not have to pay a fee, but donations are requested, as the nonprofit that creates, manages and maintains the trail, the Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corporation, is organizing the event. All guests must still sign a waiver. LHT requests that all riders wear helmets and have working front lights on their bikes. Decorating the bikes with extras, such as the free glowsticks provided, is highly encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to winners in youth and adult categories for their creativity. There will be restrooms available, as well as “a few vendors selling snacks and drinks,” but LHT advocates for bringing along snacks and/or having a moonlit picnic dinner beforehand. No alcohol is permitted, there are no current COVID-19 protocols in place, and the rain date is the following day on Sunday, July 10. Additionally, LHT’s Saturday Morning Walking Club typically hosts a free monthly event exploring the area. However, because of the Full Moon Bike Ride in July, the Saturday Morning Walks will resume on August 13. The location of the August event is, as of press time, to be determined. It’s also a fitting place to start walking from to engage in the different activities that the Abbott Marshlands has scheduled for July. On the first Saturday of every month, the Friends for the Abbott Marshlands, the nonprofit that uplifts the area through programming and protective measures, hosts wellness walks on different trails. This month’s walk, co-sponsored by the RWJ Fitness and Wellness Center, invites attendees able to bask in an “early summer walk” among others. The group will go on the Abbott Bluff Trail through Watson Woods, a path that requires a climb to the top of the bluff, then a descent to a depression in the ground where Abbott’s home was destroyed in a 1914 fire, according to the Marshlands’ website. Nature Therapy Walk: A Shinrin-yoku Experience with Sharon Lohse Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, 1635 River Road, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Friday, July 8, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $35 admission ($28 with member discount). Stewardship is a core mission of Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, where habitats like meadows, woods, and ponds have been flourishing since the 1930s. BHWP claims to be “the nation’s one-andonly living museum specifically devoted to native plants,” making for a tranquil trip to see what’s in bloom this July —butterfly weed, false sunflowers and sweet pepperbush, to name a few — surrounded by a 100-acre deer exclosure to keep the species
intact. Since retiring from her position as a psychiatric nurse, Sharon Lohse has continued to develop unique specializations that unify her lifelong passion for nature and the endless desire to help others. With certifications in forest and horticultural therapy, she is a garden trail guide whose background, as well as later pursuits of science at Delaware Valley University, influenced the core elements of this upcoming BHWP event. According to a 2019 National Geographic article, Shinrin-yoku is a Japanese term that translates to “forest bathing,” a form of ecotherapy focused on atmospheric immersion and its corresponding health benefits. This idea of mediating outdoors has inspired Lohse’s nature therapy walk, as the BHWP page continues, where attendees “will explore the land of the preserve and awaken [their] senses to its sounds, beings, textures and beauty.” These gentle strides, at a considerably slower rate, are meant to truly absorb the perks of reflection, whether against a sunlit pond or looking inwards. The “emphasis is on unplugging,” BHWP says, to eliminate stress and increase prosperity. TravelStorys Mobile Tours
Available from the D&R Greenway Land Trust for Cedar Ridge Preserve, Healing Trails, Abbott Marshlands, and St. Michaels Farm Preserve. Since their inception in 1989, D&R Greenway Land Trust has preserved more than 20,000 acres of land in New Jersey. This has allowed nature, conservation efforts, and green open spaces to flourish — despite time and time again being named the most densely populated state in the entire country. While D&R has no events planned at the moment, anyone can go alone or with company on their TravelStorys mobile tours, which use a free application and GPS to access audio guides. There are four D&R sites currently adopting the TravelStorys platform as a location-based podcast to share local stories and history lessons. Listeners can appreciate the paths at their own pace, enjoying time on protected properties by following along to the prerecorded voices. After downloading the guide, the application functions “more like a compass” and works offline, meaning that the insight travels with the user as it recognizes each location in the tour. tion have shaped the world. The idea to feature these females came from a young girl herself, Princeton resident Madeleine Freundlich, as part of a Girl Scout project. International figures like climate change activist Greta Thunburg are included, as well as local leaders including Beverly Mills and Elaine Buck, the founders of the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum who worked to preserve not only the physical area, but the personal accounts and cultural significance of Black history in the Sourlands. The Healing Trails are a tour through Princeton’s Greenway Meadows, divided by three colors of varying accessibilities and difficulties, that are meant to help with personal health. Being surrounded by nature physically and emotionally benefits people of all ages, soothing ailments, issues, as well as a myriad of conditions that were dealt with right on that same trail. D&R’s website says that the tour, inspired by the Healing Trails art exhibition in their Johnson Education Center venue, revolves around the “stories of people healing from surgery, illness or trauma by walking on [their] preserved lands.” Trails marked as green are handicap accessible and paved, yellow are “relatively flat” and unpaved, while red trails are “more challenging” and uphill. D&R hopes that those soaking up the restorative qual-
ity of lush greens and a warm sun will “find peace and perspective” as they progress. The Healing Trails were created in memory of Edie Howard. St. Michaels Farm Preserve’s mobile tour is through an abundance of open space at the edge of Hopewell Borough, where an old orphanage and farm stood before the land was purchased for preservation in 2010. The trail invites young audiences to learn about nature, the website continues, through exploration and expression. By giving them the tools to find a “home in nature,” the audio informs children about how outdoor experiences can create special connections to the world. The trail is a tribute to this, and now encompasses a memorial area called “Jackson’s Place,” established on Earth Day last year to remember Jackson McGrath Place, a young man whose ve for the environment will positively inspire visitors for years to come. Held annually on the West Windsor Campus of Mercer County Community College, Tomato Patch has seen over 7,400 junior and senior high school students spend several weeks of their summer exploring the visual arts, dance, theater, and vocal music under the guidance of a highly qualified staff of teaching professional artists. This camp is different because it is
multidisciplinary. Students choose a major in either theater, dance, vocal music, or visual arts and take classes in that major in the morning. After lunch they choose four afternoon elective in any area. 2022 afternoon offerings include children’s theatre, “Who’s line is it anyhow?”, painting, drawing, jazz dance, musical theatre, children’s theater, a cappella singing, hip hop, vocal ensemble, comedy, music video and web video. For those advanced students
grades 8-12, there are Master Classes in Acting where they will learn about show business, develop their audition skills, and work with others on advanced scenes. Each session is three weeks in length, Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. with Before and After Camp available. Session I is for those entering grades 4-7 in the fall and runs from July 5-21. Session II is for grades 8-12 and runs July 25-August 11. There are 2
sessions also of the advance Master Class in Acting solely for grades 8-12 with Session I running July 5-22 and Session II from July 25- August 12. All sessions culminate in a Festival performance and Art Display at Kelsey Theatre. Master Class culminates in its own showcase. Blend Bar & Bistro’s Central Jersey Beer Fest Returns Blend Bar and Bistro opened its doors in Hamilton in October of 2012 and created an anniversary event that has grown into a tasting extravaganza, the Central Jersey Beer Fest. 2022 marks Blend’s 10-year anniversary, and Blend will be hosting smaller events at their restaurant location practically weekly all summer leading up to Saturday, October 8, Central Jersey Beer Fest at Mercer County Park Festival Grounds in West Windsor. RWJUH Hamilton’s holistic program focuses on non-medical wellness techniques, such as meditation, aromatherapy, and Reiki, which is a practice that promotes healing by improving energy flow around the body. Joe DeMarco is the Off Ice Director of the Chiefs. “Joe DeMarco and his team have been working with our Mercer Chiefs each season, and this is the next step to elevating our players and their game,” says Broderick. DeMarco and his team also work with both Steinert and Hamilton baseball teams. “The teams enjoy it as they have known each other since Little League,” says DeMarco. “It’s very nice, former students will stay in touch and now even bring their kids in for training. It is great to see. Ticks are the most active in the warmer months (April-September). Infected ticks can transmit diseases including Lyme disease. Prevent tick bites by wearing insect repellent, check yourself, kids and pets for ticks, remove ticks quickly, and seek medical help if you develop symptoms of Lyme disease (including fever, headache, fatigue and rash). • Beat the heat this summer! Extreme heat can lead to heat related illness. People ages 65+, children under two, and people with chronic diseases and mental illness are at highest risk. Remember to keep your cool! Stay in air conditioning as much as possible, stay hydrated, check on neighbors or family who are high risk, wear loose and lightweight clothing, and NEVER leave children or pets in cars. • Sun Safety! Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Protect
yourself and others from the sun when outdoors by seeking shade, and wearing sunglasses, hats, and clothing to protect you from the sun. Don’t forget your sunscreen! Cartoonists draw the line at Trenton Library By Dan Aubrey
T
he Trenton Free Public Library and the Trenton Artists Workshop Association will present the exhibition “Art by Area Cartoonists” at the Trenton Free Public Library from July 1 to 27. An opening reception is set for Friday, July 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. as part of the Trenton Downtown Association’s First Fridays and in recognition of the museum’s presence in the city’s Creek2Canal Trenton Arts District. An artist’s talk is scheduled for Thursday, July 7, at 6 p.m. “Art by Area Cartoonists” features work by Greater Trenton artists who portray everyday events through cartoons and illustrations. Participating artists include Bill Hogan and Ken Wilkie. Hogan, based in Morrisville, PA, is the retired editorial cartoonist for the Bergen Record, where he created thousands of images for the major New Jersey daily on subjects ranging from political intrigue to fast food. He is also a fine arts painter who exhibits regularly in the Trenton area and was a member of the Trenton Artists Workshop Association. Hogan notes the following about cartooning: “I’ve been drawing since I was a kid, my mom and dad saw it. I eventually attended art school in New York City and majored in editorial illustration, not cartooning (no degree at that time — just a certificate upon graduating). “(After studying and moving to Santa Fa), I freelanced weekly for the Santa Fe Reporter while painting hotel interiors. My cartoon ideas were good, but the drawings were kind of raw. At the time I thought they were ‘great.’ “I do think in images. With cartooning I see, hear, or read something that stimulates my imagination to create an idea on a surface and bring my idea to fruition through frustration and joy. “I see it this way: If I read something, I put it in my sieve — brain — and digest it until images come to life. Then I compose the images that hopefully make some sense. Same goes for my paintings, except no narrative, just images connected in some way.” Hogan offered “Trump As King” as an example of keeping his editorial wit in shape. “I drew the ‘King’ in March, 2017, a month after he took office. ‘Jaw-dropping’ exhibit brings sharks to New Jersey State Museum By Susan Van Dongen
T
here are no megalodons in the ocean. None. Zip. Nada. The prehistoric giant sharks are dead and gone, and they’ve been gone for more than 3 million years. Rest assured. Pay no attention to the “docufiction” episodes you might see on The Discovery Channel, the ones that usually run during “Shark Week” in July, with titles like “Megalodon: the Monster Shark Lives.” Dr. Dana Ehret, assistant curator of natural history at the New Jersey State Museum (NJSM) in Trenton, knows the science behind megalodon’s extinction. He has been interviewed on television and in print to dispute the pop culture rumors that the megalodon still lives, may be lurking out there ready to strike, as in the 2018 movie “The Meg.” In fact, he has been on The Discovery Channel’s “Megalodon: Fact or Fiction” specifically to say with authority, “The meg is dead and gone.” “We know why it doesn’t exist — the fossil record for megalodon ends about 3.5 million years ago,” says Ehret. “My colleagues and I published a paper in 2020, and we showed after 3.5 million

ers. “The Jaw Dropping World of Sharks” exhibit at the NJSM runs through January 8, 2023. The exhibit, in the museum’s second floor Riverside Gallery, will display specimens and artifacts about sharks, as well
as their relatives — stingrays and manta rays — to shed light on these fearsome but misunderstood creatures, exploring their biology, fossil record, conservation, and cultural significance. According to Ehret, who curated “The Jaw Dropping World of Sharks,” “The exhibition showcases the fossil shark record of New Jersey and aims to educate people about sharks, their unique biology, and history.” “New Jersey is known for one of the premier fossil collecting locales on the East Coast in Monmouth County,” he adds. “Thousands of shark fossils from the late Cretaceous period (approximately 70 million years ago) have been recovered over the last 150 years.” Many species of sharks continue to live just beyond the waves of the Jersey Shore. One wall in the gallery showcases two species common to our waters — the huge, alien-looking scalloped hammerhead, and a shortfin mako shark. Sharks and their relatives share a 400-million-year history and have a diverse family tree. They inhabit the world’s oceans, rivers, and estuaries, evoking fear and mystery. installation, Ehret talks about these fears, and emphasizes that sharks rarely attack humans. He doesn’t even like the phrase “shark attack,” preferring to say “shark and human interaction.” “Most of the time, these interactions are not lethal, they’re incidental,” he says. “Sharks have tooth-like structures on their skin, so even just being brushed by a shark, you can get a rash or be scratched, especially in a place like Florida, when there are a lot of people in the water.” Sharks are rarely after people, who will put up a fight, but favor something easier to consume, Ehret explains. However, they don’t know exactly what’s dangling in the water, so they may come up to a human for a “taste.” “The sharks aren’t coming (into shallow waters) for people, they’re probably coming in for the bait fish,” he adds. “But if there are a lot of people in the water, it’s going to make for an interaction.” “Sometimes sharks come in and try something to see if it’s food, but decide not to go further,” Ehret says. “It’s ‘strike and retreat,’ and then they don’t come back. But, with a mouthful of teeth, they can inflict so much damage.” And those teeth! On one wall of the gallery, visitors to the exhibit can see a variety of shark jaws, large and small, but all teeming with six or seven rows of teeth. “Many of these jaws are from sharks that are found off the coast of New Jersey — great whites, hammerheads, tiger sharks, etc. One jaw comes from a shark caught off of Beach Haven, so it’s very local,” Ehret says. The centerpiece is the preserved jaw of a great white shark, a gaping maw of two feet or more on loan from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Ehret notes that sharks are constantly losing and replacing teeth, with some 250 to 300 teeth in their jaws at one time. Over a shark’s long life span (maybe 60 or 70 years), they might produce 40,000 teeth. That’s why shark teeth are one of the most common fossils collectors find. Ehret goes on to say that New Jersey is a great place to find shark teeth. “We’ve had a shore line for more than 100 million years, with prehistoric sharks swimming just offshore,” he says. “75 to 65 million years ago there were many sharks in the waters off what is now Monmouth County, so it is a known area for sharks’ teeth. In fact, I visited the British Museum and saw that it has fossil shark teeth from Monmouth County.” “Sea levels have gone up and down over the ages, and around the time the Hadrosuarus (first found in Haddonfield, New Jersey) was walking around, sea levels were high — all of South Jersey was under water,” he adds. “Places like Big Brook, Colts Neck, and Holmdel were at the edge of the ancient shoreline,
Dana Ehret, assistant curator of natural history at the New Jersey State Museum, helps prepare the ‘Jaw Dropping World of Sharks’ exhibit now on view. and there were tons of sharks swimming around, so naturally there are lots of shark fossils there.” Ehret has been hunting for shark teeth since childhood and has carried that fascination into adulthood. “When I was little, you could collect teeth in Shark River Park,” he says. “That’s how I got into in fossils, and I still have some of those shark’s teeth I collected at age 5 or 6. Now I collect fossil sharks from all over the world.”

hret (whom U.S. 1 profiled in February, 2020) has traveled as far as Peru and South Africa to do research in paleontology, marine biology, and paleobiology. The Hamilton Square resident chose Stockton University in Atlantic County for his undergraduate work in marine biology, in large part because he would be close to the beach and ocean. Then it was on to graduate and doctoral studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville, a premier location for fossil hunting, as portions of Florida were below a warm, shallow ocean in ancient times. Ehret then worked as curator of paleontology for the Alabama Museum of Natural History in Tuscaloosa. Again, he hit pay dirt for fossils, as the fossil record in Alabama goes back millions of years and includes dinosaurs, giant whales, and many shark fossils. A native of Spring Lake Heights, Ehret returned to New Jersey to take the position at the NJSM in 2018. The new exhibit does touch upon the megalodon, boasting a fossilized Meg tooth about five to six inches in length, found on the beach in Atlantic City.
Creek eventually killing a boy and the man who jumped in to save him. Another man was bitten badly near the mouth of the Matawan, but lived. For the rest of that summer, enticed by sizable bounties, fishermen sought the rogue shark, while armed men in boats patrolled the New York and New Jersey coasts to seek and destroy the animal. The events made the national news. A taxidermist and lion-tamer from Barnum and Bailey’s Circus caught a 7.5 foot great white in the Raritan Bay near Matawan Creek, and for a while the shark was thought to be the perpetrator. There is still debate about this, and about the exact species of the killer shark, particularly because the animal had traveled so far in fresh water, and great whites are salt water fish. As formidable as the creatures are, Ehret says many species of sharks are in decline, and the exhibit provides information about this aspect as well. Some sharks are fished only for their fins and then thrown back in the water to die. (There is a scene in “The Meg” where the characters discover sharks that have been hunted for their fins and discarded.) Ehret takes the questions about the megalodon in stride. He is also amused that he has become a kind of cult figure, the sought-after guy, flown out to Los Angeles to appear on real documentaries to debate the fake megalodon documentaries. He has also lectured at Rutgers on the topic. He was even invited to a showing of “The Meg” at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, where they screened the movie and Ehret gave a scene-by-scene narration, clarifying, “No, this couldn’t possibly happen.” “It’s the one question I get the most, from children and adults: ‘is the megalodon still alive?’” he says. “The meg was real, it was an amazing animal, but it is not still alive. It is definitely dead.”
“It’s one of the few megalodon teeth found in the history of fossil hunting in New Jersey,” Ehret says, adding that this tooth may have washed north from Maryland or the Carolinas, which are prime fossil hunting territories for megalodons. “People travel from all over the world to find these megalodon teeth. They’re very prized by fossil collectors,” he says. Although Ehret emphasizes that sharks rarely attack humans, the exhibit does tell the story of a rogue shark that wreaked havoc along the Jersey Shore between July 1 and 12, 1916. (This is the subject of Fernicola’s book.) A shark thought to be some nine feet long bit a vacationer in the ocean near Beach Haven, badly enough so the man died from his wounds.
