Former police chief sentenced Nucera to serve 28 months for lying to FBI agents By SAM SciArrOTTA

After several delays, former Bordentown Township police chief and administrator Frank Nucera was sentenced last month to 28 months in prison for lying to FBI agents who were questioning him about violating an 18-year-old Black man’s civil rights during a 2016 arrest. Judge Robert Kugler also sentenced Nucera to two years of supervised release. Nucera, 64, was convicted in October of 2019 on one count of making false statements to FBI agents who were

interviewing him about the Sept. 1, 2016 arrest of Timothy Stroye at the Bordentown Ramada. He was also charged by indictment with one count of hate crime assault and one count of deprivation of civil rights—the court declared a mistrial on those charges, though, and retrial has yet to begin. Nucera will not begin to serve his sentence until those charges are resolved. The sentencing comes after a number of postponements. Following Nucera’s conviction, his attorney Rocco Cipparone Jr. requested delays after he said Nucera sustained injuries in a January 2020 car accident—this also resulted in the postponement of Nucera’s retrial. He was set to be sentenced in April of 2021, but the date was once

again moved, this time to May 2021, after a health scare. Nucera was indicted in late 2017 on charges of hate crime assault, deprivation of civil rights and making false statements after he was accused of slamming then-18-year-old Stroye’s head into a door jamb in 2016. He quietly retired in early 2017, before the investigation was made public. A pair of BTPD officers responded to a phone call from a hotel employee, who claimed that two teenagers stayed in a hotel room without paying. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, and the officers called for backup. Several additional officers, including Nucera, arrived at the scene. Each year, the Burlington County Division of Parks leads a countywide search for residents, organizations and municipalities that have a passion for history. The History Recognition Program looks to honor those who have taken steps to explore, record and reveal history in unique, engaging and accessible ways—keeping local history alive. This year, the county honored the Bordentown Historical Society, not once, but

twice. “We were grateful for the recognition, not only as a commendation for the volunteers of the Bordentown Historical Society and Building Bridges that put the time and effort, heart and soul, into assembling these events, but, for the opportunity to elevate the visibility on this history,” said BHS director Tim Rollender. Awards are handed out in a number of categories: Published History, Achievement and Leadership, Education, History Project, Historic Site and Organization of the Year. lington County history. The Harrowing History program also received the Education award, which looks to highlight new approaches and perspectives that help expand the scope of the county’s past. “More often than not, people treat history like a collection of facts on a page, or dusty artifacts on a shelf,” said director Kristi Kantorski. “Sure, it’s interesting and telling to see how the pieces fit into a bigger, global historical period. To be able to explore a remarkable episode of our shared history on a personal level with the people that lived it is rare.” Untold Stories is an exhibit and speaker series that took eight months to build, RollenSee AWARDS, Page 7

Liberty Lake director earns national award Andy Pritikin, owner and director of Liberty Lake Day Camp, has been awarded the 2021 American Camp Association Special Recognition Award for his advocacy in opening summer camps in 2020-21, and the policies put into place to ensure a safe summers for campers and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pritikin’s work motivated hundreds of camps across North America to open last summer, and most of the rest to open in 2021. Pritikin, who authors nationally published parenting articles and hosts the Day Camp Podcast, has been advocating for years that “kids were already in screen/technology overload, and losing their social skills. Since the pandemic hit, these same children have been forced to stare at screens, while taken away from formative social interaction- causing bigger social, mental, and emotional issues.” In the months leading up to summer 2020, Pritikin appeared more than 35 times on local and national television and virtual media outlets. Days after he testified at a Senate subcommittee hearing about the re-opening of childcare centers and summer camps, New Jersey day camps were given the green light. Other state governments followed New Jersey’s lead, and hundreds of camps throughout North America opened, following similar safety protocols. Pritikin is passionate with his message that the summer camp experience carries more significance right now than ever before. “Our unique environment really fosters the kind of social-

ization that can return the childhood experience to our kids,” Pritikin says. Liberty Lake forged a path to opening in 2020, integrating precautions to ensure camper and staff safety. Hand cleaning stations were added throughout camp, activities were altered to fit CDC guidelines and rules about social distancing between groups and activities were put in place. In the end, more than 1,000 campers and 250 staff took part in activities last summer, with Liberty Lake Day camp reporting that no kids or families testing positive or getting ill.

Schools to receive funds

The Bordentown Regional School District is one of a number of local districts in the state that could receive funds from the $500 million bond referendum passed by voters in 2018 to pay for various education-related improvements. The state Assembly Appropriations Committee approved the funding plan on June 16. The measure, which would authorize the spending of more than $300 million in bonds, still needs to be approved by the full Assembly, State Senate and Gov. Phil Murphy. The funding approved by the Appropriations Committee is only a portion of the money authorized by the referendum. The entire package calls for $220 million from the plan to go towards vocational-technical schools, including $23.1 million for the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School District. Some $26 million would be earmarked for county colleges, including almost $3 million for Middlesex County College and $4 million for Mercer County Community College. –Bill Sanservino WHAT DID WE MISS? NUCERA continued from Page 1 two officers were escorting Stroye— handcuffed and in custody—out of the Ramada and into a police cruiser when Nucera allegedly approached him from behind and slammed his head into a doorjamb, as witnessed by a BTPD officer. Another officer later added that Stroye was no longer resisting at the time of the assault. In the complaint, the officer said he didn’t report the use of excessive force, because he was afraid Nucera would retaliate. According to the indictment provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI agents interviewed Nucera about the September incident on or about Dec. 22, 2016. During the interview, which was video recorded, Nucera falsely stated multiple times that he didn’t touch, talk to or see Stroye or his companion. “And you didn’t cuff anybody?” one agent asked. “I didn’t touch, I didn’t touch any of them…I had nothing to do with the physical arrest or anything, no,” Nucera replied, according to the indictment. Following the Stroye incident, Nucera was later secretly and legally recorded by township officers using racist language to refer to Stroye and his companion, saying, “These f***ing people should stay the f**k out of Bordentown” and added that “it would have been nice” to use police dogs during the arrest because, according to Nucera, “That dog, that dog will stop anything right then and there [makes dog noises]. I’m telling you. You’d have seen two f***ing n*****s stop dead in their tracks. I love when they do that. I just love that.” That wasn’t the first time Nucera was reported to have used racist language. According to the complaint, he has a history of using racial slurs and making racist comments about black citizens and repeatedly used police dogs to intimidate black attendees at Bordentown Regional High School basketball games. Nucera was also recorded in late 2015 saying to another officer, “I wish that n****r would come back from Trenton and give me a reason to put my hands on him, I’m tired of ‘em. These n*****s are like ISIS, they have no value. They should line them all up

and mow ‘em down. I’d like to be on the firing squad, I could do it. I used to think about if I could shoot someone or not, I could do it, I’m tired of it.” Nucera was also documented sharing racist “jokes” with other current and former township employees. Township clerk Colleen Eckert told FBI agents and assistant United States Attorneys in a March 2017 interview that she and Nucera, who she called “a mentor” to her, used racial slurs including the n-word. In the interview, Eckert specifically referenced a local real estate developer—the name, along with other identifying characteristics, was redacted. “Eckert recalled an occasion when [redacted] came into the township building after hours. Eckert stated, ‘We’d (Eckert and Chief Nucera) be like, oh, that n-g,’ in response to seeing [redacted],” according to the documents. Nucera also felt that that developer, who Eckert called “shady,” was “working an angle.” Eckert, Nucera and former township CFO David Kocian all used the word. At the time, the three all received an extra $20,000 to share township administrator duties. Eckert is still employed by the township. The report went on to say that Eckert—who has worked for the township in some capacity since 1996—felt she and Nucera used the slur in a “joking way” and not “in a derogatory sense” because she hears “it all the time on Sirrus [sic] when I listen to hip hop.” She said she had never heard the former chief talk about people of Hispanic background, though she recalled him referring to “people he assumed were of Middle Eastern descent” as “towel heads”—”whoever wears the turban,” she said. Nucera quietly retired in early 2017. Eckert says in the filing that when when she learned Nucera was retiring, he told her that “there were some racial things said and that if he did not retire, then he was going to be brought up on charges.” He went on to tell Eckert that the only thing he had done wrong was embarrass the Bordentown Township Police Department. AWARDS continued from Page 1 der said. The eight-part series focused on School No. 2 and the Bordentown Manual Training and Industrial School. The historical society solicited and recorded personal histories from former students, experts, residents and relatives who had or heard about experiences with the school. “It was a chance to capture this knowledge and experience with those that lived it and share it with those who didn’t,” Rollender said. It came about through a collaboration with Building Bridges. Leah Shaw had reached out about School No. 2, while Dr. Connie Goddard wanted to talk about the Bordentown Manual Training and Industrial School. Both had questions about the schools. “There has been little preserved history of these two institutions— or Black history, in general, in Bordentown—as was the case in many locales at that point in history,” Rollender said. “With those initial sparks of interest and the opportunity to collaborate we had the motivation and wherewithal to conduct interviews, to build the knowledge we had of the two schools and tell the story to an audience that wanted to know.” The series kicked off in February of 2019 with screenings of the PBS documentary A Place out of Time and Compromised by Conflict. It also featured a visit to the Underground Railroad Museum—which includes an MTIS exhibit—and conversations with alumni of both schools. Campus visits

and a discussion with Dr. Mildred Rice Jordan, the granddaughter of MTIS’s founder Reverend Rice, wrapped up the series. “The Bordentown Historical Society’s mission is to preserve, teach and inspire curiosity about Bordentown’s rich history,” Rollender said. “This was an opportunity to shine a light on these two underserved institutions and understand the tremendous impact they had locally and nationally. The Manual Training School for example, was a nationally recognized institution that hosted visits from greats like Eleanor Roosevelt, Albert Einstein and many, many other dignitaries. To hear the graduates of both schools, speak of their formative years really offered the best understanding of the quality of education and life lessons earned.” Kantorski agreed. “For Untold Stories, in particular, there are people that impacted, and were impacted, by the circumstances of the day still with us,” she said. “It was an honor and a pleasure to recognize this history with them. It was a humbling experience to be recognized in education for Harrowing History. We are always striving for new ways

to connect to the public and reach beyond the expected in teaching our local history. To be recognized for our efforts in this manner is inspiring.” The Harrowing History program is a 90-minute costumed storytelling showcase that focuses on the seedy underbelly of Bordentown’s past—scary (and quiet) history of murder, mayhem and tragedy. Each show lasted an hour and a half and consisted six stories and a Q&A session with the audience and performers. The program, held last fall, took two years and a ton of research to develop. Kantorski and other members of the historical society combed through over 300 newspaper articles, Census records, genealogy reports and books to come up with the stories. “Harrowing History is a way to broaden people’s understanding of their local history and to reach out to those who might otherwise overlook a historical event offering, seeing it as ‘boring’ or ‘stuffy,’” Kantorski said. “We wanted to not only give all the elements of a gripping story, but also tie it to a larger historical picture of the time period. When all these different elements come together, only then do we have a comprehensive historical view, and a really juicy narrative. By presenting the research via

a theatrical storyteller performance, we aim to educate the audience in a creative and entertaining way.” While Untold Stories was a one-off event, Harrowing History will return this fall starting on Sept. 18 at the cafe in the former Divine Word administration building—featuring new sets and costumes. The program will be held indoors, something the society is looking forward to. Members are beyond excited to get back to normal as things are able to open up more and more, said co-president Bonnie Goldman. “In the simplest terms, it’s exhilarating,” she said. “Bordentown is a treasure trove of history and creativity, enough to captivate audiences of all backgrounds. With the ease of COVID regulations, we are once again able to open our doors and invite people to discover why Bordentown is so special. One of the Bordentown Historical Society’s goals is to preserve, teach, and inspire curiosity about our local history. Now, we can once again set to accomplish that mission. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to once again host our Annual Garden Tour which was one of the many fundraising events that we had to cancel last year. Slowly but surely, we hope to return to normalcy, by reopening our Friends Meeting House to visitors, creating, and displaying exhibits about Bordentown’s rich history.” Contact SAM SCIARROTTA: ssciarrotta@ communitynews.org, (609) 396-1511, ext. 121

what’s happening Fun for the Fourth By Sam Sciarrotta

Gas up the grill and get those sparklers ready—July 4 is just around the corner. Outside of your backyard, though, there are plenty of events throughout the region to help you celebrate. Here are some ways to say hello to summer, down the shore and beyond.

Revolutionary Pub Crawl The area’s connection to the American Revolution is a local favorite—what better way to celebrate that than with a few flagons of ale? Bordentown Walking Tours will host a Revolutionary Pub Crawl July 3, noon to 4 p.m. Tour guide Mark Neurohr-Pierpaoli will lead revelers through Bordentown City’s history of wine, beer and booze via four local bars—learn about famous residents like Thomas Paine and Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, while hearing juicy tales of Bordentown’s love of brew from Colonial times through the Prohibition. Tickets are $75 and include a drink at

each bar, food at every stop, a guided tour and pub crawl deals like craft cocktails and drink specials. More information: bordentownwalkingtours.com.

Cape May City Independence Day Parade String bands, performers, cars, veterans organizations and local officials will travel down Cape May’s Beach Drive starting at noon on July 3. Keep an eye out for festive golf carts, bicycles and baby carriages, all entered in the Best Decorated contest. Community groups are invited to participate in the parade. Those interested should contact the Cape May Department of Civic Affairs at (609) 884-9565. More information: capemaycity.com.

WMGK Freedom Festival Around here, nothing quite says summer like that signature Jersey Shore sound. Okay, maybe that’s just the Springsteen obsessive in me talking, but

the point still stands—that blend of soul, rock and R&B is the perfect company on a hazy summer day. Check out one of the genre’s pioneers, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, at the WMGK Freedom Festival, July 4 starting at 5 p.m. at Wiggins Park in Camden. Food, beer, music and artists will be available all day. The Jukes go on at 8, followed by a fireworks display synchronized to classic rock tunes. More information: wmgk.com.

LEAD Fest State Fair

So, just where is (609)?

We all know what the (609) area code is, but where is it exactly? It’s a good question, and one posed to us by a reader after we said, in our first edition of Six09, that we’d cover what’s happening across the region. The image at right answers the question, and as you might see, a good chunk of the state falls in the area code—from Lambertville up north to Cape May at the southern tip of the state. We’re the largest area code in New Jersey, and it includes parts of Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset, Monmouth, Camden, Ocean, Burlington, Atlantic and Cape May counties. It is home to places like Princeton, Trenton, Hammonton, Long Beach Island and Atlantic City. There’s a lot of ground to cover in (609), which we hope means plenty of stories that will help you explore your home turf. If you come across something that might be a good fit, send an email to ssciarrotta@communitynews.org. –Sam Sciarrotta

check out the racing and swimming pigs at the leAd fest state fair, set for July 1-11 at Mercer county Park.

Enjoy 11 days of fun at the LEAD Fest State Fair, held at Mercer County Park in West Windsor July 1 to 11. The festival runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays

and 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends. Guests can check out agricultural exhibits and farm animal displays, as well as the fair’s famous racing pigs, food, vendors and, of course, carnival-style rides like the Super Himalaya, the Grand Carousel and Zero Gravity. Scott’s Magic Show will be held twice nightly on weekdays and three times on weekends. Nightly concerts start at 6:30 and include Rock of Ages on July 3, El Ka Bong on July 7, the B Street Band on July 9, Southern Steel on July 10 and local favorite Ernie White on July 11. Fireworks are set for July 3, 4 and 10. Tickets are $5 on weekdays and $8 on weekends and the July 4 holiday and can be purchased online. Free admission for county residents after 6 p.m. on July 3 and 4. More information: theleadfest.com.

Oh, the horror Princeton-based author Riley Sager talks his new novel, “hot book summer” and more By Sam Sciarrotta

Riley Sager is on a roll. The Princeton-based author has hit his stride in suspense over the last few years. He exploded onto the horror/ thriller scene in 2017 with Final Girls, a novel that sees its protagonist dealing with the aftermath of surviving a massacre that left six of her friends dead. She’s dubbed a “Final Girl,” after the horror trope that refers to the last woman standing at the end of a slasher film—think Laurie Strode in Halloween or Alice in Friday the 13th. Stephen King tweeted about it, calling it “the first great thriller of 2017.” The book was featured in Entertainment Weekly. Whoopi Goldberg held up a copy and raved about it on The View. Sager continued to churn out books— 2018’s The Last Time I Lied, 2019’s Lock Every Door and 2020’s Home Before Dark all hit bestseller lists and earned praise from readers and critics for their thrills and badass women protagonists. Now, he’s back with Survive the Night, a road trip thriller about Charlie, a woman who may or may not be stuck in the car with a serial killer she has a connection with. Sager called the book a “love letter to movies”—Charlie is a film studies major, and dozens of films are mentioned or integral to the plot. “I set out to write a thrill ride,” Sager said. “I wanted this book to feel like a roller coaster, and I think it does.” We talked to Sager over the phone about writing women, the recent horror lit boom and more. The conversation follows below. *** Six09: “Sur vive the Night” is almost out, and it really does seem to be a big summer for horror and thrillers with this new class or writers. There’s Sur vive the Night, a new Stephen Graham Jones, a new Grady Hendrix. How does it feel to be a part of this gang of writers all doing different things with the genre? Riley Sager: It’s a really good time to be a reader and a writer. This summer is just ridiculous with the amount of amazing books coming out. I’ve been joking with other writers on Twitter that we should call it #HotBookSummer. It’s just filled with all of these books. Every time I see a new list, it’s like, “Okay, that one I’m gonna read, that one I’m gonna

Riley Sager’s “Survive the Night” tells the claustrophobic story of Charlie, who may or may not be stuck in a car with a serial killer. read.” There’s just so many cool things being done with the genre right now— horror, thriller and suspense. It’s just a really, really great time with so many great people working at the top of their game. I think we all sort of, whether we know each other or not personally, want to do a great job. You want to top what someone else has done, so there’s that great friendly competition going on. Six09: It seems like movies really play a big part in “Sur vive the Night.” Were there any films that specifically inspired the book or any films that inspire you just in general? RS: There was nothing that specifically inspired the book. My previous book, Home Before Dark, is a dual-timelines haunted house family saga that involved a book within a book, and it was just so complex and exhausting that I wanted to do something completely different, and I wanted to basically write a book that was as stripped down as possible. I wanted something that’s just written in real time, that’s mostly just two people in a car, speeding down the highway in the middle of the night. Then, I had to think up a plot. What is driving this, no pun intended? That was really the goal—to do something completely different and have fun with it. The movie idea came about when I decided that the main character was going to be a film studies major, because I was a film studies major in college, and therefore I didn’t have to do any research. I really wanted to pack in a lot of movie references because I think it’s a great way of bonding the reader with the main character. Charlie will make a reference to something, and if the reader knows what she’s referencing, they’ll under-

stand what she’s feeling in that moment. There’s a connection there. It’s really kind of emotional shorthand to pop in a really apt film reference. There are so many movies that I love, but this one, I really can’t think of a good example of something similar to it. It’s so obscure, but there was the Twilight Zone movie in 1982. There’s this framing device with Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd in a car, and one of them is like, “Do you want to hear a really scary story?” It’s just a framing device, but it was very evocative to me. It’s just two people in a car kind of playing mind games with each other. Six09: You’ve done some online movie watch parties ahead of the book’s release. How have they been going? It’s a pretty unique way to promote a book in a time where people still can’t necessarily get together in large groups. RS: It’s been a lot of fun. It was something that we did last year just to entertain ourselves during the pandemic. It’s Saturday night, no one can go anywhere, let’s all watch a movie at the same time and tweet about it. When it came time to promote Survive the Night, with all its movie references, it was just a no-brainer to be like, “Let’s watch some of the movies referenced in the book.” Last night, we did Silence of the Lambs. It was great to look back on what is not a modern classic, although I feel so old because it’s 30 years old this year, and I saw it opening night in theaters when I was in high school. Six09: Did you write “Sur vive the Night” in quarantine? RS: I did, although I got the idea before COVID really hit. I knew it was going to be my next book, so it was just, I guess, serendipity to write about people stuck together. When it came time to write, it was a nice escape from the daily headlines and the madness of what was going on at the time. Six09: What was it like being an author in quarantine? Last year, there were a lot of virtual author events when “Home Before Dark” came out. What’s it like doing that again but also seeing a really, really clear light at the end of the tunnel? RS: It’s strange because in some ways, the book tour this year is exactly like last year. It’s all virtual. Nothing’s in person. But I think the big difference is last summer, it was a necessity, and now, I think it’s a convenience. Who knows if the typical book tour will ever return? It’s very time consuming and it’s very expensive. I’ll hop on a plane and fly to Chicago, go to a bookstore, get up the next morning and then fly to a different city. You can do all of that now from the comfort of your own

home and reach just as many, if not more, readers. Six09: Are you working on anything else right now? RS: I’m at a weird time where I just finished next year’s book, and my editor just read it. It’s this weird limbo. It’s always weird with writing and promoting books, because it takes such a long time for the publication process. Right now I’m talking about Survive the Night, while my main focus is on next year’s book, but then sometimes you have to go back and talk about a previous book. It’s just sometimes hard to really compartmentalize. My third book, Lock Every Door, was just released in Mexico, so I’ve been doing some press for that. It’s been so bizarre to be finishing next year’s book while promoting Survive the Night and having to answer questions about a book that I have not looked at in, like, three years. There have been some moments where they’ve asked a question and I’ve just had to stop and think, “Okay, what book are we discussing right now?” Six09: A lot of your books really focus on women. Is that by design, or does it just come naturally when you’re starting the process? RS: It really comes naturally. It all began with my first book, Final Girls, which is about the trope of the horror movie “Final Girl.” I always joke that if the trope had been “Final Boy,” my career would be very different. But I knew if I was going to write about final girls that it needed to be told from the point of view of a final girl. Other than that, I didn’t give it much thought. I really didn’t think about gender. I thought about character. This woman’s life and previous experiences and suffering and guilt—how has this affected how she responds to this situation? When I start a new book, I never intend to say “Okay, this one’s going to be about a woman.” It’s just whatever the plot sort of dictates. Who is the best person to view these events through their eyes? I’m sure there will come a day, and it might even be the next thing I write, where it’s like, “I think this should definitely be told through a man’s point of view. Right now, it hasn’t happened. Also, I love writing and reading strong women characters. Survive the Night takes place in 1991, and that was just a year that was filled with really strong, badass movie heroines—Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs, Thelma and Louise, Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. I love writing about people who don’t know their own strengths until situations force them to really act on them. For more on Riley Sager, visit rileysagerbooks.com. Jersey history alive and well at Batsto Village By Dan Aubrey

For those interested in getting back into family daytrips yet still concerned about getting out in public, New Jersey affords simple and affordable outdoor opportunities — such as Batsto Village. Located about 60 miles away from the U.S. 1 region in Burlington County, Batsto is a trip into the New Jersey Pine Barrens and into American and state history. The historic site located in Wharton State Forest and maintained and operated by the State of New Jersey was once a self-contained community productive from 1766 until the mid-20th century. Although its name is connected to how the Finnish and Swedish settlers referred to the site’s river and lake as a bathing spot, Batsto as an important iron-producing site gets its start from English colonists. The iron furnace was started in around 1766 by Charles Read and became the largest in South Jersey. During the American Revolution, the ironworks was producing iron and casting housewares, as well as cannonballs and shot for the Continental Army. Throughout the American Revolution, Batsto was crucial in the supply chain for Washington. So vital was this place that in 1778 the British were heading to capture and destroy Batsto’s Ironworks

The mansion at Batsto Village. when they attacked and destroyed the Village of Chestnut Neck. The quick action of a small group of volunteer militia turned back the advancing British troops, sparing the Village of Batsto, ensuring Continental troops would have supplies to win the war. In 1784, a year after the Revolution-

ary War was officially over, the forge became the property of first Joseph Ball and then his uncle, William Richards, whose family manufactured both iron and glass. According to State of New Jerseyproduced educational materials, Batsto’s success at the time was con-

nected to its “high quality products made from pig iron. Special products of that time were cast iron water pipes and firebacks (iron plates used to line the back of a fire place). Batsto was even commissioned by George Washington to produce four monogrammed firebacks. Two of them can still be seen at his home in Mount Vernon, Virginia.” By the mid-19th century, however, Batsto’s method of producing iron from ore heated by charcoal was eclipsed by more efficient methods, production ceased at the village, and nothing remains of the furnace or the iron works buildings. Then there was a fateful turn. An 1874 house fire spread and destroyed the glass making facilities, remaining furnaces, and 17 houses. The Richards and many of the villagers moved away, leaving the site silent. The debt-ridden Revolutionary town was sold at auction for just $14,000 to Philadelphia businessman Joseph Wharton. As Timothy Regen writes in “The Ghost Towns of New Jersey, “Upon seeing the remains of Batsto, Wharton didn’t know if he should rebuild or just tear the whole place down. Lucky for histor y he chose to rebuild. Within a few years, Wharton had completely modernized the ironmaster’s house, or big house, rebuilt outbuild-

One of the remaining village houses and the water pump at Batsto Village. ings, including the sawmill, and renovated many of the village homes . . . Wharton grew sugar beets and raised livestock; those who remained in the village found work once again, and for the next 33 years, the Wharton Empire ruled over the 100,000 acres of the Pinelands. With his death in 1909, the Wharton Estate continued to manage the place, and although the industries mostly faded away, a few folks still called Batsto home for another 80 years. “The year 1954 saw the entire Wharton Estate purchased by the State of New Jersey as protected forest. With the purchase came along all the secrets and ghost towns of the Wharton Estate: Atsion, Martha, Batsto, Washington, Harrisville, and many others that would now be able to be explored and protected for the future. “Restoration began in 1955 with the big house, post office-store, and sawmill being the first to receive taxpayer monies for the process. By 1959, the Park Visitor Center was dedicated and when built resembled an early 19th century structure.” After pulling into Batsto, the visitor’s center is the first stop. Currently closed for the pandemic, it features a first floor dedicated to the area’s natural and cultural history, including the presence of the region’s indigenous people, the Lenapes. Yet the real thing waits outside and offers a leisurely stroll into both the past and nature. Among the highlights are the 32-room Batsto Mansion. Towering over the village, the original section was created in the late 1700s by the Richards family. It went through several permutations before Wharton took possession and renovated in the late 1870s and early 1880s at a cost of about $40,000 (over $1 million in 2021 value).

The Victorian-era structure features formal dining and conversation areas, including a large porched area. However, as educational materials note, it was the “high tech” improvements that were attractions at the time. “Originally, each room was heated with a fireplace. Mr. Wharton had a system for central heat installed in most of the rooms. One of the most interesting ‘modern’ features he added was indoor plumbing. He had a water tank installed in the tall tower. When water was released, it went to the bathrooms to flush the toilets or to fill the bathtub. Indoor bathrooms were something that not many families had in the 1880s.” The Batsto Post Office opened in 1852 and, although it experienced several closings and reopenings, is one of the four oldest post offices currently operating in the United States. Interestingly, since it is an historic structure, it was never assigned a zip code and all stamps are hand-canceled. The sawmill, part of the Batsto community for more than 200 years, was revised in 1882. State materials say the current operators replaced water-powered equipment with a turbine-driven circular saw still in use today. During Wharton’s era, the mill was a profitable East Coast supplier of cut lumber and shingles. And then there are the village cottages, where in 1852, 376 people lived. But after the 1874 fire, when 75 homes were lost, only a two-lane row of buildings for visitors to walk along and visit remains. It is also where the last resident of Batsto remained until 1989, roughly 232 years after the first resident moved in — something that makes the past very present. would want to see in an improved oven. “We saw that there were changes that we could make to improve the oven greatly, for instance by strengthening the stainless and having it be a lot thicker,” Richards says. “We could use different insulation to insulate it better, and also we made it larger on the inside, so that he would be able to cook four 12-inch pizzas at once, instead of one or two.” Hotfoil-EHS also designed its oven with a damper on the front of the oven, so cooks didn’t have to lean over and risk burning themselves to adjust it up on the flue. Traditional wood-burning ovens are made of brick, clay, ceramic or stone — materials that get hot and stay hot. A well-known weakness of steel ovens, Carannante says, is that they don’t retain heat well. But he says that between the heavy-duty food-grade bricks that Hotfoil-EHS used for the cooking surfaces, along with the thicker stronger grade of steel, helps set the Garzio Oven apart from other options. “It heats up quickly, it maintains temperature really well, it makes a great pie,” Carannante says. “It does its job. Sometimes you have smaller ovens that don’t get the job done the same way (a larger oven would).” Carannante was pleased that HotfoilEHS was able to increase the interior size of the oven without really changing the outside dimensions significantly. He says that mobility is a key to Brothers’ catering success. “We’re not a food truck,” he says. “We can roll into people’s backyards. We can literally set it up near your pool.” Brothers preps food ahead of time in the restaurant before a catering job, but wood-fired pizzas cannot be prepared ahead of time. So having the ability to make the pies onsite is a real attraction. And the oven can be used to make more than pizzas, and Carannante also uses it to finish wings, sausage and peppers or really anything else — steaks, calzones, even a turkey. Operation of the oven is simple: to get things going, you just set a stack of wood in the center of the grill and get a fire going. After a half hour or so, you slide the red hot embers to one side, wipe the ash off the bricks, and start cooking. Richards sees that mobility, flexibility and ease of use as a key for any potential customer, whether for restaurant or

home use. Hotfoil-EHS has produced 10 ovens so far — all built entirely in the company’s Hamilton facility — and Richards says they have sold units to professional chefs as well as casual users. “You can put it right in your backyard, like several people have done,” he says. “It’s sitting there just like a barbecue or your wood-fired grill.” Hotfoil-EHS has a batch of 10 more in production now, and Richards says eventually he sees the company producing smaller versions of the oven as well. For now, there is a single design available with either a wheeled or stationary cart that has space to stack wood. Carannante and Joe Scharibone of Jojo’s Tavern have helped get the word out about the oven. “I’ve been very good friends with Joey at Jojo’s for 15 or 20 years,” Richards says. “He was nice enough when he saw it to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to put a link on my website and let people know they can buy one of these ovens.’” *** Hotfoil-EHS itself has a long history in Hamilton Township. Richards originally moved to Hamilton from the United Kingdom in 1977, with his parents, Neville and Irene Richards. Richards was 9, and his sister, Sarah, was 4. Neville Richards worked for a British company called Hotfoil, which had asked him to move to New Jersey and help the company enter the U.S. market. Hotfoil was originally located in South Plainfield. Richards graduated from Steinert High School in 1986. One day in 1987, his father asked him to help out in the warehouse for a few weeks. “But that two weeks turned into another week, and another … and with that, my Hotfoil journey began,” Richards says. In 1993, Neville Richards purchased Hotfoil’s U.S. operations from its U.K. based owners and went into business for himself, renaming the company Electric Heating Systems, Inc. “In the beginning, the only employees were myself, my father, a secretary and a part-time accountant, working out of a 3,000-square-foot space in South Gold Industrial Park in Robbinsville,” Richards says. After a year, the Richardses reclaimed the Hotfoil, Inc. name, and in 1996 they expanded the business to include heattreating equipment, starting a new division again with the Electric Heating Systems name. Both divisions have thrived over time, and were merged into a single

company in 2012 called Hotfoil-EHS. After Neville’s retirement, Matt became president of the company. Today, Hotfoil-EHS has more than 60,000 square feet of office, manufacturing and warehouse space in Hamilton, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and LaPorte, Texas, and more than 40 employees. The Garzio Oven is named in memory of one key employee — Frank Garzio. Garzio was a welder and fabricator who had worked for many years in the sheet metal shop at the General Motors plant in Ewing. In 2002, Garzio was retired from GM and living across the street from Matt Richards. Richards says Garzio loved to talk business and took an interest in his company. He credits Garzio with helping Hotfoil-EHS establish a welding and fabricating outfit of its own. When Garzio learned that Hotfoil outsourced the production of its equipment, he suggested that the company could save money by moving manufacturing operations in house and offered

to help get it started. Richards says that what started with “Garzio and a welding machine in a corner of the warehouse” grew into a nine-person shop taking up 20,000 square feet of space today. Garzio died of cancer in 2014. The weld shop at Hotfoil-EHS is named after him, but Richards wanted to honor him further by naming the oven after him as well. Garzio “single-handedly changed the course of the business forever,” Richards says. Richards still resides in Hamilton with his wife, Susan, and sons Evan and Kyle, 21 and 18. His parents also still live in Hamilton, as does his sister, her husband and their daughter. Susan has been the office manager of Hotfoil-EHS for the past 16 years. For more information about the Garzio Oven, call George Litynskij at (609) 4956677 or email george@hotfoilehs.com. Or you can stop right into the Hotfoil-EHS fabrication and welding center at 2960 E. PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN CAR BUYING!

Serving Our Community For Over 75 Years With No Pressure, Hassle-Free Car Buying

Here’s Some Of Our Team

Finance Manager

Claudia Giuffre-Salvador

Martin Suarez

Dominic Esposito

I began my career in automotive sales 15 years ago and 5 years ago I found my “home” at Coleman. With hard work and dedication I earned my promotion to Finance Manager. What I pride myself most about is giving customers the best experience -- making sure I answer all of the questions they have about the car buying process. Making customers happy means I did my job well. What makes me happy outside of work is spending time with my 3 children and doing DIY projects.

Spending the past 30 years in the car business has not only been rewarding, but it’s a career I enjoy to this day. Since I joined the Coleman organization 10 years ago, I have been acknowledged and honored to achieve the highest award a sales person can achieve, The Mark of Excellence Award, many times. This award is based on top sales and customer service, among other criteria. I’m also proud to be a Jets fan and a strong supporter of those who serve our community.

A long time ago I learned that to be successful and grow your business, you need to have an honest approach and be knowledgeable about the product you sell. Once a customer knows that you have their best interest at heart they become more like a friend, which I like. I strive to make my customers “customers for life” which is also the philosophy of the Coleman family that I joined 9 years ago. Aside from selling cars for the past 36 years, I enjoy traveling with my family and biking.

SAY GOODBYE TO BACK & LEG PAIN...

WITHOUT SURGERY!

30 Million Americans suffer from back pain everyday. This affects everything that they do, from work to play and ultimately their quality of life. 7 out of 10 people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives and it is one of the most common reason for patient visits to primary care physicians. There is no doubt that low back pain exists in epidemic proportions today. There are many causes of back pain. Some people develop it over time, others are injured in sports, work or accidents. Most people complain of pain and numbness in their legs, usually the result of spinal conditions such as sciatica, stenosis and herniated discs. Regardless of the cause, people cope with pain in several different ways. Many people try to wait back pain out only to find that it keeps getting worse. They buy new mattresses, try different stretching exercises, learn new techniques for sitting and standing, yet their conditions do not improve. Some make repeated unsuccessful trips back and forth between their doctor, chiropractors, and/or physical therapists. Others opt for surgery, and while it is true that surgery may be the answer for certain types of back injured, it is highly invasive and not without serious risks.

Bordentown golfer Emma Dherbey made the Burlington County Scholastic League’s All-Freedom Division team, even after suffering a season-ending wrist injury. (Photo by Rich Fisher.) By Rich Fisher

When it comes to evaluating Emma Dherbey’s talent as a high school golfer, it’s as much a case of what she didn’t do as what she did do. The Bordentown High junior did not play in eight of her team’s 15 matches this season. The fact she could miss that much time and still make the Burlington County Scholastic League’s All-Freedom Division team is telling, and a tribute to what she did in seven matches before an unfortunate swing caused a season-ending wrist injury. Dherbey was the Scotties best scorer every match, finished third overall twice, fourth once and was the medalist in a win over Pennsauken. She shot a 43 and four 44s before carding 48 ad 45 after hurting her wrist. When it came time to pick post-season teams, her quality outshined her lack of quantity. “The coaches got together and the guy from Cinnaminson—and they have always been the lead horse in our show—said ‘Hey Ron, do you have anybody who averages under 45,’” Scotties coach Ron Jones said. “I said ‘Well, I’ve got Emma but she’s only had seven matches.’ He said ‘Hey, she beat three of my guys when we played them that’s good enough for me.’ The coach from Holy Cross said the same thing. He said that she would have finished third against them had she not double bogeyed the last hole hitting two shots into the water, but that just showed him that she was trying to win. So she really impressed the other coaches.” Needless to say, the good news was unexpected. “I was very surprised but really excited,” the engaging Dherbey said.

“Just hearing from my coach about the other coaches and their experiences with me, and getting to know me even in the short amount of time, it warmed my heart. I would say I’m a perfectionist, so I don’t always see me how others see me. It was very humbling and I’m very grateful for everything they said about me.” It proved to be a nice consolation prize, although Dherbey would have traded it in for a full season of golf. Even when she was shelved, Emma went to the matches and watched her team tee off, then waited until they returned to see how they did. “I’m left there with my coach and I’m kind of sad because I wish I was out there with them having fun,” she said. “But I still go out and live vicariously through them.” Golf is in Dherbey’s blood. Her father, Jean-Pierre, and mother, Angela bonded over the game when they were married. Jean-Pierre took Emma to the driving range at Mercer Oaks in West Windsor at age 6, and playfully handed her a short iron to swing. “I just had a natural, effortless swing and the first ball I hit probably went about 100 yards,” Dherbey recalled. “I was probably like four-foot-something. I was tall for my age but I was a little thing. My dad was amazed how I was able to generate so much power at such a young age, not knowing how to even play golf. He just thought it was a little joke letting me swing -- ‘Oh yeah, try to hit it,’ probably thinking I’d hit it like 10 feet. I bombed it 100 yards out there and he’s like ‘What? Hold on!’” And so it began. Jean-Pierre quickly signed his daughter up for various leagues and tournaments. She settled in with

the New Jersey Junior PGA League, where she played eight years before aging out. In 2017 Dherbey took second out of 200 golfers in a tournament outside of Newark, and was thrilled to be honored at the awards banquet. “My family came to see me, which was great,” she said. “My mom and dad and sister (Suzanna) and my friends have always been my number one supporters. My dad has always been my number one motivator.” Emma has also been motivated by a bevy of strong instructors. “Junior PGA really set the foundation for my game,” she said. “I was able to play at some very nice courses. I played Jasa Polana (in Princeton), Bedens Brook (Skillman), Cherry Valley (Skillman); all these beautiful courses. And you learn from the best of the best. I had PGA golf pros as my coaches. My home course was Springdale in Princeton and I love that course. I was able to learn so much from those players who were older than me, and when I got to the top of my age division I was able to teach those younger than me.” Dherbey also competed in the Junior PGA Drive, Chip & Putt tournaments, which are based on a point system. She consistently reached the third round but could ever quite make the fourth and final round. Along the way she competed against Holmdel’s Megha Ganne, who in early June became just the second amateur to ever lead a round at the LPGA Women’s Open by shooting a four-under

after the first round. “I met her when we competed in the Drive, Chip and Putt competition,” Dherbey said. “My dad and her dad talked. I went up against her once and I lost by one point. It was cool that I met her a while ago then got to see her on TV. She was doing good for a while (at the Open).” Shortly after meeting Ganne, Dherbey joined the Scotties as a freshman. Jones recalled that there were a few boys reluctant to accept her and were not too pleasant. But two years later—after she lost her sophomore season to the COVID-19 shutdown—Dherbey is completely accepted. “We have a nice bunch of kids now,” the coach said. “After her freshman year she said ‘Things are gonna be better.’ It was visible back then. I kept telling the boys ‘If you want to be the best on this team, you’re gonna have to beat a girl.’ They weren’t taking me too seriously at first but they all came around. They embraced her as one of the team. We had a competitive year during the time that Emma was playing.” It took an unfortunate turn during an Apr. 20 match with Holy Cross. After hitting one in the water on the 18th hole, Dherbey took a drop. When

she swung, her club hit a hard surface causing a twinge in her wrist. “I didn’t really think that much of it because my mind was on the match, we were so close to beating Holy Cross,” she said. “I said ‘OK I have to finish this hole’ We lost by a little bit, it kind of upset me. I shot a 48, I never really shoot that high so I was in my head about that, kind of beating myself up. I played bad and was having such a good round until I went into the water.” Thus, the wrist was an afterthought. When Dherbey awoke the next day she felt some slight soreness but chalked it up to sleeping wrong. It got worse, however, when she hit the driving range. Initial x-rays showed nothing and Emma began to think she was over-reacting and using pain as an excuse for sub-par play. She played in one more match and shot a 45 before an MRI indicated that part of her bone was sticking out in a spot longer than it should be going up near her wrist, and she also had a torn ligament that’s the connector in her wrist. The options were to have it scoped, get a cortisone shot or give it time to let it heal. She has opted for the latter this summer.

“I’m trying to go out to the driving rage at least once a week to build up the strength,” said Dherbey, who works as a ranger at Cream Ridge Golf Course. “That’s the No. 1 thing I need before I go out and play in these long, four-hour tournaments. My main goal is to try and have fun in the summer. I’ll play with my dad, it’s a way we can bond together. We play more freelance and at the end of summer I’ll really start getting back into the competitive aspect of it so I can try and qualify for states my senior year.” Dherbey had a low enough average to qualify for the NJSIAA Girls Individual Tournament this year, but not enough matches. Her strength is off the tee, as she has driven the ball up to 250 yards. That number is as impressive as her grade point average figure, which is 96 out of 100 unweighted. Emma is also a solid putter and strong with her irons. “My fairway woods and chipping may need a little work,” she said. “I plan to build those up and come back better than ever, I’m hoping.” Her teammates and anyone who knows her are hoping just as much. “She’s a great kid,” Jones said. “ All the boys on the team enjoy playing with her. She was quick with a few tips here and there for them. When she was hurt she came out, hit a few balls on the range to see how it was, or went to the putting green for a while. She’d ride the bus with them, chat with them. She’s just an all-around great teammate.” Not to mention a pretty good golfer.

Lucien Murat: A rogue prince among us DOUG KIOVSKY THE BEND IN THE RIVER

Born in 1803 to prominent parents in the Italian countryside of Milan, Lucien Murat was the second son and third child of Joachim and Caroline Murat. His mother was the youngest sister of Joseph and Napoleon Bonaparte and his father was a dashing cavalry commander during Napoleon’s reign as Emperor of France. Although Napoleon didn’t approve of his sister’s marriage to Murat three years earlier, he was granted the titles of First Horseman of Europe and Marshal of the Empire despite his ineptitude as a military strategist. By the time that their fourth and last child was born in 1805, the title of Admiral of the Empire was added to the accolades bestowed upon him. In 1808, he was named King of Naples after Joseph Bonaparte vacated the throne for the leadership of Spain. Napoleon’s directive for this transition proved to be a recipe for disaster since many of the diplomats left for Spain as well. This was the beginning of Murat’s fall from grace. It was compounded further following the Grande Armee’s defeat at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 when he secretly met with opposition lead-

ers and agreed to switch alliances in order to avoid imprisonment and relinquishing his crown. However, within two years, he abandoned the coalition upon realizing that plans were drawn for his removal. Escaping to the port town of Pizzo, Italy with 200 men in a futile attempt to muster support for a larger militia, he was captured on the beach by the forces of King Ferdinard IV who took command of Naples. Imprisoned in a former stone fortress, Murat was tried for treason and executed by firing squad. After the execution, the family fled to Austria and settled near Vienna where Caroline’s children received proper education. It wasn’t until Napoleon’s death in 1821 when the family felt liberated to leave the country. A year later, Lucien’s older brother, Achille, took the opportunity to board passage to the United States. Experiencing life in a new land, Achille, at the age of 21, occasionally wrote letters of encouragement to his family. By 1825, Lucien sailed to America as well, reuniting

with his uncle Joseph before journeying across the wilderness of this young country. Large in stature, his six foot frame and broad shoulders carried his muscular physique with ease. His prowess was apparent in his swagger and flowing mannerisms that somehow accentuated his curled up mustache and goatee. With a gleam in his eye, this good-natured rogue exuded elegance by sporting the finest garments and headwear that money could buy. As for footwear, he always wore an expensive pair of high leather boots that he ignored to clean following hunting expeditions. So extravagant were his inexcusable spending sprees and habitual shortcomings, that he was immersed in a perpetual state of debt. After gallivanting through territories and towns, he returned to New Jersey, renting a grand home and farm in Columbus. His penchant for buying and raising thoroughbred horses was offset by his affliction for gambling. He tried his hand at farming but failed miserably.

Despite their depravity for liquor, they were rarely affected by intoxication.

PEPPLER FUNERAL HOME

Then he moved to another farm closer to Bordentown but failed again since he frequented his days more so at the nearby White Horse Tavern than he did on his property. Finally, he built an elaborate home on Park Street in Bordentown that was adjacent to his uncle’s estate. The location was intentional not just from the standpoint of blood relations but also for the sake of constantly harassing his uncle for money. Whenever his brother Achille came to visit from Florida, both brothers displayed a lack of social graces as they indulged in the functionality of taverns. Despite their depravity for liquor, they were rarely affected by intoxication. This was quite unusual since Achille presented a shorter and thinner physique than Lucien. Recently married to a socialite that bore the pedigree as the great-grandniece of George Washington, Achille urged his brother to find prosperity in the arms of a dignified woman. Taking the advice under consideration, Lucien sought to fulfill his obligation. It wasn’t long before he met a socialite living in Bordentown by the name of Caroline Fraser. Quite familiar to residents, she was tall and beautiful with a flowing brown mane. She was the youngest daughter of a Scotsman who immigrated to this country

as a soldier in the Loyalist militia to fight against the patriots during the Revolutionary War. Settling in South Carolina after the conflict, he married a Southern woman with an affluent background. Wishing to expose his children to Philadelphia society without residing in the city, he built a summer home for his family in Bordentown. On Sundays they attended religious services at the Christ Episcopal Church where Caroline was instrumental as the church’s first organist. This was a far cry from the lifestyle that satisfied the appetite of Lucien. Needless to say, he fell seriously in love with her. In turn, she found him not only dashingly handsome but appealing with a sharp sense of wit. As rapid as the romance blossomed, word spread of their engagement. Both the Frasers and Joseph Bonaparte frowned upon this and took no effort in concealing their emotions of Lucien as an opportunist. Furthermore, Joseph threatened to cut off his ungrateful nephew’s family allowance and remove him from his will if pursued the notion of marrying a commoner. Despite objections, the couple drove their coach to Trenton one summer afternoon in 1831 and was privately married in a ceremony performed by Reverend Dr. Beasley of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. The honeymoon was substantially shortened as Joseph carried out his promise. Although Lucien had squandered around $100,000 of his own money before his marriage, he harbored this

secret with the intention of ciphering his wife’s finances that were presented by her parents. Raising his mustache with an indomitable smile, he exhausted expenses on frivolities such as decorating their home with wallpaper imported from France and installing an aviary in their living room that included the branches and cavity of a tree. Wearing on his imperfections, he frequently tried to cajole a few half eagle coins from his wife’s sisters. Soon his unfiltered reputation earned him the nickname, “Prince Reckless.” Although he lost more money on gambling than he retained, he thoroughly enjoyed the strategy of a good game. It is said that late one rainy night as he played cards among strangers and stragglers around a barroom table at the American House on Park Street, just as the last hand was being dealt, Lucien made a bold wager that all of his clothes would remain dry when he made his way home. Dumbfounded, the individuals found the wager irresistible and cast their earnings to the center of the table. Without hesitation, Lucien stood up, placed his frock coat on the table, and began to strip off his garments. Stacking everything

on the coat, including money, he tied the sleeves together, picked up the bundle, and bid his company a fond farewell as he sprinted home into the night, wearing nothing more than his boots and a grin. And so was recorded one of the first incidents of “streaking” in this country. Lucien may have seen humor in many of his escapades, but Caroline did not. By 1835, they were the parents of two children and completely in debt. After several therapeutic sessions with her sisters, it was decided that she would convert her home into a French boarding school for young ladies. Known as Linden Hall, the school welcomed girls from across the country, teaching them etiquette and poise in addition to classes on the French language, sewing, lace-making, and how to “superintend” a home. The school was very successful for almost a decade until tragedy struck. A few days before Christmas in 1844, Caroline lost an infant daughter shortly after childbirth. She and Lucien had their fourth child buried in the Christ Church cemetery. She would later bore two more children. The last child would be born in France. Then in 1847, Caroline’s sister, Eliza, died.

Lucien may have seen humor in many of his escapades, but Caroline did not.

Buried next to the infant daughter, Eliza was a teacher at Linden Hall as well as her other sister, Jane. To compound matters, potential students were driven away by Lucien’s lackadaisical conduct and the rival Spring Villa Female Seminary across the street. Always the fortune-seeker, Lucien traveled to France on several occasions to reclaim his family’s right to the throne. By 1848, a widespread uprising in the country and the election of Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III) was the dawn after the darkness that the family needed to escape creditors and leave Bordentown forever. In the years that followed, he was appointed as Minister of Turin and received the status of senator. Mostly importantly, he was made Prince of the Empire. This paved the way for attempts to regain the throne of Naples but wasn’t long before this prospect was abandoned. However, he was successful in compensating most of his creditors for debt that occurred while in Bordentown. Lucien Murat was a hard-drinking but affable man that lived life to the fullest. He gambled a lot and on love the most. Through it all, the love between him and Caroline endured. Lucien passed away in his Paris apartment in 1878 and Caroline followed exactly ten months later. In the end, love was shown as the winning hand. Doug Kiovsky is the vice president of the Bordentown Historical Society.
