Getting jazzed up for Italy

BRHS jazz ensemble earns prestigious trip to Europe By LOis LeViNe The Bordentown High School Jazz Ensemble is used to being on the road. After all, the band has played around Bordentown, as well as Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. But performing overseas is a whole other thing. Come June 30, the ensemble and its director will be taking a 10-day trip, flying across the Atlantic and spending seven days attending workshops and performing at the Assisi Performing Arts Summer Music Festival in Italy. Assisi, a hillside town, located in Italy’s Umbria region, is regarded as the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare. It boasts several medieval castles and, most importantly, has

become known for showcasing and mentoring young musicians at its annual summer music festival. The jazz ensemble performs throughout the year for military groups that come through Bordentown and at a number of local “Music in the Park” events, said Michael Montalto, director of bands for the Bordentown Regional School District. Every year, the ensemble also plays at Essential Ellington at Temple University in Philadelphia, which is co-sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center and includes post-performance workshops. This year, the band won Best Rhythm Section, and vibe player Nicholas Demkowicz won the Outstanding Soloist scholarship. And, in January, the ensemble, whose repertoire consists of mostly traditional, big-band style music, and includes trum-

pet, trombone, woodwind and rhythm sections, along with two altos, a tenor and a baritone vocalist, traveled to New England to play at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival. The Berklee College of Music hosts the festival at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. The annual event is the largest of its kind in the United States, with 150-plus high school bands from 15 states. The ensembles are judged by a panel of Berklee’s top faculty members and given written critiques of their work. This year, Bordentown finished second overall in the competition. Two of the musicians—trumpeter Samantha MacFarlane and lead alto Nik Romano—won outstanding soloist awards. The Assisi festival offers noncompetitive solo opportunities in opera, musical theater, classical, jazz, sacred music and See JAZZ, Page 8

BRHS updates semester schedule By sAMANThA sciARROTTA

After months of deliberation, the Bordentown Regional School District decided on minimal changes to the high school’s current 4x4 block schedule. A scheduling committee consisting of Bordentown Regional High School staff and administration, board of education members and parents ultimately decided to allow incoming freshmen who did not take Algebra I in middle school to take the class for a full block, or the entire year, rather than one semester. BRHS currently operates on a 4x4 block schedule. Each

semester, students typically take four classes. Each class is 80 minutes, and they meet for 90 school days. Final grades are issued at the end of each semester, similar to a traditional college schedule. Students have the option to forgo lunch or study hall to take a fi fth class. They are also able to take courses like Spanish I and Spanish II in the same year, and BRHS principal Rob Walder said the schedule allows for more class sections, which gives students more opportunities to take different electives. The schedule has been in place for nearly 25 years, and it has been successful for the school. “Longer classes means fewer

change of classes, which means the kids spend less time in the halls,” Walder said. “Teachers have a chance to delve deeply into content. PE classes have more time to get out to the fields, instruct and then play. Art can take more time, and wood shop, too. Science labs are the biggest proponents—they don’t have to rush through.” Walder added that students only have to focus on four or five classes at once, as opposed to the traditional seven or eight, and they get to swap teachers once a year. The high school has used the 4x4 block schedule since 1995. The goal of the scheduling comSee BRHS, Page 7

DOT awards resurfacing grant

Bordentown Township has been awarded a $244,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for the Groveville Road Resurfacing Project. The grant will cover the re-paving and striping of Groveville Road from Route 206 to Route 130, and the installment of new pedestrian crosswalks—one at the entrance to Northern Community Park and at the other at the intersection of Klein Drive and Groveville Road. The crosswalk at Klein Drive and Groveville Road will be lit and have crossway signals/flashing beacons installed as a measure of pedestrian safety for township residents and visitors. The Northern Community Park crosswalk construction will include striping, paining, and the installment of ramps. “We are proud to receive this grant from NJDOT. Thanks to the diligence and hard work of our professionals and staff—specifically township engineer Fred Turek—the township has taken advantage of significant grant funding from the State to help improve our roadways,” said Bordentown Township Mayor Stephen Benowitz. Over the past two years, the township has received close to $1 million in NJDOT grants, which have been put

Dog licenses can be renewed throughout the month of January. In order to renew a dog license, a copy of the current rabies certificate (cannot expire during licensing period) and a copy of the spaying/neutering certificate must be accompanied with the appropriate fee. New licenses can be obtained throughout the year by mail or in person. For mail, send to Township of Bordentown, Attention: Dog Licenses, 1 Municipal Dr., Bordentown, NJ 08505. BRHS continued from Page 1 mittee was to determine whether or not a different schedule might be a better fit. The committee explored two options: the A/B block schedule and the rotate and drop schedule. Under the A/B schedule, students would have an A day of classes and a B day of classes all year long. Each day would include four classes, for a total of eight classes throughout the year. Like the 4x4 schedule, the length of each class is 80 minutes, and each class ends up meeting for 90 school days. Final grades are issued at the end of the year. Classes under the rotate and drop schedule run the entire school year. Each day, students would meet with six of their eight classes — three before lunch, and three after lunch. Start times of each class would rotate, and two classes are dropped each day. Walder said the committee also focused on and is still considering a “One Lunch” plan. “This is where all the students have lunch at the same time,” Walder said. “This would provide time for students to meet with their clubs, get extra help from teachers and ask teachers questions. It would also allow teachers com-

mon planning time with each other— math teachers can all get together on certain days, et cetera.” The scheduling committee met several times over the last year and included separate staff, parent and student meetings. Committee members also met with representatives from other local schools, including Rancocas Valley, Burlington Township, New Egypt, Ewing, Burlington City, Cherokee, Shawnee and Lenape. This allowed them to get a feel for what worked and didn’t work for students outside of the district. Overall, Walder said the process was successful. “It allowed us to take a deep look at the things we do well and find some changes to create other ways to support more of our students and increase achievement,” he said. “The surveys we sent to students, staff and parents gave us tremendously helpful feedback. We also met with the BOE curriculum committee several times to listen to their ideas and questions.” A slideshow presentation on the benefits and drawbacks of each scheduling option, plus links to additional research, can be found on the Bordentown Regional High School website at brhs. bordentown.k12.nj.us.

JAZZ continued from Page 1 chamber music. The annual program is open to young musicians from all over the world, where, each June, they converge to perform. So how did it all come about? As Montalto explains, “Basically, representatives from the festival approached us. Bob Violette [a concert and theater producer, as well as an international opera and concert singer], along with Mayor [James E.] Lynch, have done a lot for the Bordentown community in terms of coordinating events that the band has played at. Bob, who is on the board of directors for the [Assisi] music organization, has seen the band and knows the level and caliber of the musicians; he is the elite liaison between us and the festival.” In September, Montalto said, Violette approached him about bringing the band to the festival. Montalto went back and forth with Violette a few times on the idea, and, after having a few parent meetings, agreed it would be a terrific experience for the students. ‘This is my first experience taking my group out of the country: it’s definitely exciting for me, as well,” Montalto said. Sixteen out of the current 20 band members will be going to Italy from June 30 to July 10. The traveling group includes two alto sax players, Nikolas Romano and Kyle Meier; tenor Colleen Ritter and baritone Dhruv Prasanna; six trumpet players (Samantha MacFarlane, Lauren Redwood, Benjamin Heller, Christopher Roman, Patrick Conroy

The Bordentown Regional High School jazz ensemble is raising money for a trip to perform at a festival in Italy this summer. and Christopher Packard); three trombonists (Kevin Ritter, Lucas Schuck and Miles Morris); drummer Cerezo Diccion; vibes player Nicholas Demkowicz, and bass player Jamie Nasatka. “My students will be doing three concerts in Assisi—I believe that two are outdoors and one indoors—and we will also be visiting Rome for three days to do some sightseeing there. But while they are in Assisi they will also be working with professionals and taking master classes with professors from various universities.” What makes the trip particularly spe-

cial is that Assisi Performing Arts will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this summer, as well. To prepare for the festival, the students will be rehearsing and adding to their repertoire throughout the rest of the year. “By the time we get to June, we will have a whole library of pieces to perform,” Montalto said. “And we are doing a lot more public performances this year. So far, we have only done our Winter Concert; jazz competition season begins after winter break, but we have also done clinics with Terell Stafford

when we were at Temple University.” To help defray the cost of the trip, Montalto has set up a Go Fund Me page and will be looking into other fundraising ventures before June. “It’s $3,700 per student, so it’s a big expense for each family. And I have two sets of siblings in the band, too, so we are trying to do what we can to get that number down for these families,” he said. Montalto adds, “This music festival will be great for the kids. They will get to see other performances and be a part of an international festival. It really is pretty cool that we are going.”

“Knowing your child is loved and cared for brings such&peace of mind.” • • Infants Toddlers My child is learning so much.” “The • Preschool and PreK • kids here are happy and are learning.” These comments from parents of the preschoolers at Over The Rainbow Child Development Center in Bordentown, speak to the school’s mission to provide quality care for children in a safe environment, where they can grow and learn while having fun. “Research shows that children in quality child care and early learning programs are better prepared for kindergarten with better reading and math skills and larger vocabularies,” says Managing Director Liz Wysowkowski who brings 25 years of childhood development experience to her position. The learning experience begins at six weeks in the center’s Infant Care and spans six carefully developed programs: Toddler, Pre-School, Pre-K, Before & After School and Summer Camp. The oldest family owned and operated childcare center in Bordentown, Over the Rainbow has been serving families in the community for almost three decades and is currently owned and operated by Executive Director Lisa Giancarli. “Our focus is on the child and the parent,” says Liz Wysowkowski. “Our goal is to meet and exceed parents’ expectations by providing programs that benefit kids while making parents lives easier.” “Parents work schedules can vary, given the demands of working remotely and commuting,” Liz notes. The center is open from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm, Monday-Friday with no additional fees for time spent. Parents can book a five, three or two-day weekly schedule. Their FDA-approved menu is healthy and kid-friendly. Breakfast, hot lunch, afternoon snack and beverages are provided at no extra cost, so

parents needn’t worry about packing

lunch or making breakfast. Before & After School Parents keep Summer Campin touch with kids

and teachers throughout the day with KidReports, reviewing their child’s daily sheet in real time. The app is free and accessible from any computer or mobile device. “We believe that social interaction and developing motor skills are key for young children and we focus less on children using computers,” says Liz Wysokowski. The facility is surrounded by a circular wall with an outdoor courtyard at the center, furnished with safe, age-appropriate toys and playground equipment. An indoor gym is used daily and is important when weather does not permit outdoor activity. The center contributes to the local community and to the childcare profession. Teachers and kids participate in Bordentown’s Fall Festival and sponsor the annual Fishing Derby. Thanksgiving and Christmas bring contributions of food and a toy and mitten drive. Over the Rainbow welcomes young volunteers who are interested in learning more about Early Education as a career. All members of the US military receive a special discount for their children as do police, fire fighters, and EMTs. Working with Virtru Hospital, the school provides dental screenings for students and the community. Over the Rainbow Child Development Center is recognized by several prestigious state-sponsored and private organizations. Grow NJ Kids is a rating and improvement center for consumers and schools. New Jersey First Steps Infant/Toddler Initiative is a training resource for Early Childhood Educators and Child Care Aware, provides information about care facilities and assistance for parents.

Bordentown girls’ basketball returns with seasoned squad By Rich Fisher Can losing lead to winning if most of the girls who suffered those losses come back for another crack at it? Bordentown Regional High School girls’ basketball coach Bill Lloyd certainly hopes so. The Scotties return all but one player from last year’s 9-16 team that went just 1-7 in the Burlington County Freedom Division. Included in that nucleus are junior Ciara Conover, the team’s leading scorer (8.2 points per game), senior cocaptains Marissa Drew and Aja Reeves, and battle-tested sophomores Oshynn Cosom and Sofia Peterson. All five saw substantial playing time while going through the bumps and bruises of a tough campaign, which Conover felt helped the team bond. “It was definitely tough,” she said. “We had to push through and it was really hard. But when you all push through together it makes you stronger. We helped each other out.” The co-captains admitted there were some tough times that needed to be navigated through that could pay dividends this year. “It was a little hard, I’m not gonna lie,” Reeves said. “It’s hard to be confident

Bordentown basketball players Ciara Conover (left) and Aja Reeves will lead the team this season. (Photo by Rich Fisher.) and to be motivated to play again when you keep losing. But it also brought the team closer because we decided to just work with each other and be confident in our abilities and we never got mad at each other. We all worked together as a team.” Drew agreed: “Last year we went through a lot of growing pains. We

were young and learning how to play together. This year, we’re used to each other, we know our strengths and weaknesses, and we work harder together at practice and at games.” What that adds up to remains to be seen. Lloyd is not going to make any bold predictions; but feels the potential is there for major improvement if the players work hard at it. “I think success kind of breeds that bonding but failure can do that as well,” Lloyd said. “I’m not gonna say it did, I need to see how it plays out this year. But you would hope facing that adversity is gonna bring them together. They’ve been through the wars together. “You hope that last year will help but it can’t be like, ‘Well, we’re gonna be better automatically because we’re all back this year.’ That’s part of the learning curve, especially for high school kids. A lot of times they step on the floor and expect success. They’ve gotta put the work in. For me as a coach, I have to make sure they continue to try and get better and not become complacent and happy just to be out there.” Cosom will be a key figure at point guard after learning some valuable lessons last year. “She’s still kind of going through some growing pains,” Lloyd said. “But we expect big things, and as she matures this season she’ll come into her own and really help us out.” Conover will be the shooting guard, and Lloyd says she needs to prove herself at both ends of the court this year, while Peterson is on the wing and “just brings that toughness and tenacity you love in a player.” Reeves and Drew will be the post players and their rebounding will be key in the early going until the Scotties can get into a shooting rhythm as a team. “You hope they bring that leadership and they hit the boards hard,” Lloyd said after a preseason scrimmage with Hopewell Valley. “At the beginning of the

season we’re having a hard time finishing because a lot of these girls play other sports in the fall, and a lot of them are getting back into the swing of it. It will take us three weeks to get them back into basketball shape and handling the basketball.” Other girls in the rotation are senior Rachel Scranton and juniors Gillian Baker, Kenna Wojcik and Brianna Reed. Although Conover is the leading returning scorer, the coach noted she will not be the go-to girl. In fact, no one will be. “Everybody’s gotta help,” Lloyd said. “I don’t think we can say there’s one person we have to count on every night. There will be nights Oshynn will hit a couple threes and be the hot hand, there will be nights Ciara hits a couple threes and she’s the hot hand. There will be nights they’ll be off but hopefully Marissa and Aja are down low and Sofia rebounds well too and they lead us in scoring. “I think it will be all hands on deck. It’s not just one person who other teams will say ‘We need to shut her down and we’ll be all right.’” Drew, whose father, Mark, is the former BRHS boys’ coach and was point guard on some Scottie powerhouse teams in the early 1980s, is feeling confident about the season. “We all have talent and duties to the team,” she said. “We are definitely a lot better than last year. We work harder together at practice and in games. This season will be better and I have faith in all my teammates. I’m excited for what’s to come.” Conover added that “we’re definitely more mature, we’re older and the chemistry is much better after we played together for a year.” Reeves noted that getting knocked down continuously last year has helped the Scotties form a toughness and a desire not to let that happen again. “We didn’t like our record last year so we’re gonna come back stronger this year,” she said. “We’re a lot more focused. We’re working together a lot as a team. We didn’t like having that record, making it look like we’re easy to beat. We’re trying to come back and fight harder and show that we have fight in us.” Bordentown showed flashes of that on occasion last year. Lloyd pointed to the game in which his team took a good Burlington Township team into overtime before losing by five. “It was one of those games where you say ‘See you have potential, you can do it, you can play with these good teams,’” the coach said. “It’s just a matter of putting it together consistently. That’s the thing we need. Not too high or too low, staying in that consistent break.” So, will all this experience help? “It should,” Lloyd said. “Any time you put two- and three-year players out there, they’re no longer the little kids on the court. You hope that in our division they’ll be able to hold their own.” It should be interesting. And quite possibly, entertaining.

Drahuschak brings backyard pool skills to Irish swim team By Rich Fisher It is the job of every grandmother to make their grandchildren feel special. OK, maybe more a labor of love than a job. But in the case of Notre Dame High School senior Jimmy Drahuschak, both his grams showed greater insight than that of just coddling their little grandson. “I first remember starting swimming around eight,” Drahuschak recalled. “We had a pool in my backyard. My brother did a few laps and I said ‘Wow, let me try.’ I did some and showed off in front of both my grandmothers. They said ‘Wow, you should really try out for the swim team.’” Naturally, he believed everything his grandmas said, and did just that. “Of course,” the Bordentown resident said with a laugh. “I was young. But from there I guess it just kind of sparked.” Score one for Catherine Drahuschak and Barbara Slipp, whose keen insights have led to a successful swimming career for their grandson. Despite not swimming the 200 and 500 meters until his sophomore year, Drahuschak had enough talent to finish in the Top 12 in both events at last year’s Mercer County Tournament Championships. He is being counted on as a key distance swimmer for the two-time defending county-champion Irish this season. “He’s one of our go-to guys in those events, no question about that; and it fits him,” ND coach Henry DeSandre said. “He’s tall, he’s got great ability to find the right kind of water. His pace is good and his turns and his walls are just absolutely where we want to see from him and where we want him to be at this point in his training. It’s only gonna progress. We set some goals, we raised the bar this year when we were meeting, and he wants to attack that bar.” The “bar”; i.e. the times, is what Notre

Notre Dame senior and Bordentown resident Jimmy Drahuschak’s love of swimming sparked when he was 8 years old. Dame swimmers concern themselves with. They don’t set goals of finishing in a certain spot at a certain race. “We’re more concerned about the bar,” DeSandre said. “We’ll let the stopwatch take care of where we place at counties.” Drahuschak’s bar for the 200 is 1:50 after going 1:55 last year. DeSandre said “a 4:55 would be a great goal for him in the 500” after going 5:20 last season. The swimmer was not about to argue. “If that’s his goal, that’s my goal,” Drahuschak said. Drahuschak is somewhat of a rarity for ND, which is loaded with club swimmers. Drahuschak began swimming for the YMCA Tornadoes of Burlington. He eventually joined the highlevel South Jersey Aquatic Club in fifth

grade and lasted there for four years. But when SJAC moved its home base to Voorhees, the commute was too far and Drahuschak returned to the YMCA. “I’m not really that upset that I don’t do club anymore,” he said. “I just really value high school now and I think it’s better because I get to go to school with these people too.” When he arrived at Notre Dame, he was experienced in every stroke and appeared a natural for the 200 Individual Medley. That lasted until midway through his 10th-grade season. “He came in with a little year-round swimming experience and just developed from there,” DeSandre said. “We just looked at him in the IM fashion, and during his sophomore year we saw he had a lot of distance qualities in him. That’s what we pursued. He blossomed out last year, did ver y well in the two and the five. We went to him constantly, even with some big talent on our club. He got right up there, trained well.” Drahuschak took one for the team, but did not immediately celebrate the switch after doing IM all his life. “I mean, who wants to swim a 500?” he said. “But yeah, I got used to it. It was near the end of the year and they needed somebody in there, and I guess I did good at it.” Did he think it was a one-shot deal? “I was hoping,” he said with a grin. “But here I am. It was a good feeling last year though, finishing in the Top 12 in both. That’s pretty good.” It didn’t come easy. In the IM, a swimmer is doing four different strokes at a quicker pace, which keeps things interesting as opposed to doing the same stroke over and over again. “IM is like two laps of one thing, and then boom, just two more laps of another,” Drahuschak said. “You tr y to set goals for yourself, or at least that’s what I did—just get through this

stroke, and boom, there will be two or three more. But for freestyle it is kind of different because you’re just doing the same thing all the time. The training is different. You’re practicing your breathing techniques. It was a challenge. Usually I kind of look to the people around me to keep me going.” One of those guys is junior Andrew Kite, who is ND’s top distance man. “We push each other, but he pushes me more than I push him,” Drahuschak said. Apparently, that assessment is a bit too modest. “That may be for right now,” Kite said in the season’s first week. “But he doesn’t swim club and doesn’t have any spring season. He’s just getting ready now and he’ll definitely get better and start pushing me. He’s always somebody good to go to when you want to talk about things. He understands it.” Whatever reluctance Drahuschak felt toward distance has long disappeared, as he has become a solid role model in that event. “He’s got a good work ethic, he’s a good team player,” DeSandre said. “He’s one of our leaders, and he’s a pleasure to coach. I’m very comfortable with his time right now (in early December). Our real season starts at the end of January. That’s when you’ll really see him start blossoming out.” Drahuschak is looking to attend college next year and has his eye on Stockton. In the summer, he will continue to ser ve as a lifeguard for American Pool. “That job can be pretty boring,” he said. “But hey, you’re getting paid to just sit there.” And it involves swimming, which has become his passion. “I think,” Drahuschak said, “that it’s an extremely good lifestyle.” Of course it is. Would a guy’s grandmothers ever steer him wrong?

Your back. Now without pain.

Solutions for back and neck pain don’t always start with surgery. But at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, solutions start with an objective diagnosis by qualified experts. Our fellowship-trained spinal surgeons understand the complexities of the spine, assuring you a thorough understanding of your condition and the treatment options available. Whether that means an individualized physical therapy plan or a minimally invasive spinal procedure, you can be certain of two things: a solution that’s right for you and one that’s been recommended by the region’s only hospital nationally certified by the Joint Commission in spine surgery.
