Your new flame Candle business heats up during quarantine

Two incumbents, one newcomer sworn in May 20

By SAM SciArrOTTA

If you had told Emily Ayers a year ago that she’d be running a successful candle business out of her home, she would have laughed in your face. Now, though, it’s ver y much her reality—Ayers is the woman behind Dancing Flame Candle Company, which sells both online and in Bordentown City at Mimosa Goods. “I’ve always been a candle person,” she said. “My mom, my grandmom, it’s how you felt at home in our house. One of the first things we do when we get home is light a candle.” So you can imagine how many candles she went through while quarantining during the pandemic. “I couldn’t keep buying them ever y week or two,” she said. “That’s a little ridiculous.” So she took matters into her own hands last April. Ayers, a special education and science teacher, decided to combine her interests and craft her own. “When I nerd about about something, I really nerd out about it,” she said. “I spent time researching candles and thought, ‘Let me make one or two. That might be fun.’” But then she started to read about what goes into the candles she’s used to See CANDLES Page 8

Meet the new mayor City commission’s newest member to serve as mayor By SAM SciArrOTTA

Jennifer Sciortino is active in Bordentown City. She’s a member of the Parks Committee, Elks Lodge 2085 and Bordentown City Cats. She’s been a presence at the Cranberry Festival, Street Fair and Green Fair. This year, though, she decided to take it a step further and do something she’d been pondering

for a while now—run for the Bordentown City Board of Commissioners. And she won. Not only that, Sciortino was the top vote-getter in May’s election. She was sworn in as mayor last month. “We have amazing history, we have an ideal location, we have a fantastic business community, we have incredible volunteers unlike any I’ve ever seen anywhere and I just promise you that as mayor my door will always be open, I will always be here to listen,” she said during the swearingin ceremony. “I recognize my experiences may not be the

same as yours, but because you’ve opened your doors to me, already I have a better insight into what your experiences are and also what your concerns are, and I promise to be here whenever you need anything.” Sciortino said she considered running last term but decided against it. This time around, though, she heard the call. She has a background in government—she currently works as the director of communications for the New Jersey State Treasury DepartSee SCIORTINO, Page 15

Five candidates ran, but three candidates pulled ahead in the Bordentown City Commission race: Jennifer Sciortino, incumbent Joe Myers and Mayor Jim Lynch. All three were sworn in at a ceremony on May 20. Sciortino will serve as mayor, and Myers will serve as deputy mayor. Sciortino received 645 votes, Myers 628 and Lynch 608. Runner-up Edward Foley IV received 400 votes. Incumbent John Brodowski, who dropped out of the race in April, received 161 votes. The results are are official and were certified by Burlington County May 18. Sciortino, 46, grew up in Middlesex County and attended Woodbridge High School. She went on to study journalism and English at Rutgers University. She has lived in Bordentown City for 13 years and currently works as the director of communications for the New Jersey State Treasury Department. This is her first time running for public officer. Sciortino was recently appointed to the Bordentown City Parks Committee. She is also a member of Bordentown Elks Lodge 2085 and is the vice president of Bordentown City Cats, through which she has orgaSee ELECTION, Page 3

While a rose by any other name is still a rose, not so with irises — especially the Carr Iris. Named after the historic Bordentown horticulturist and flower hybridist Franklin Carr, the iris bearing his name has a distinct pedigree. As City of Bordentown signage notes, “A famed Iris hybridizer, Carr graduated from William MacFarland High School in 1936. His work was commissioned for the Vatican and Buckingham Palace, and gardens featuring his irises can be found in New Zealand, Newfoundland, and Scotland. His Irises won 12 international awards in Europe, and the Boehm Company of Trenton, New Jersey, used his Pontiff Iris as a model for the Pontiff Porcelain sculpture presented to Pope John Paul II. A memorial Iris garden was built at Hilltop Park in Bordentown to celebrate his achievements.” As shown in the above photo, the irises around the Carr memorial are in bloom. So are other Carr irises around the region. That includes those at the entrance of the West Trenton Animal Hospital on Grand Avenue in Ewing, where founder and chief of staff Dr. John Kazmierczak links his blooms with the internationally known buds provided directly from the Carr family. It all proves that all levels of history have roots in the region. And at this time of the year, despite the pandemic closing flower festivals and related events, there is the distinct opportunity to get out and smell some distinguished irises. — Dan Aubrey

CANDLES continued from Page 1 purchasing—paraffin wax, phthalates, oils, other carcinogens, wicks containing zinc and metal—and that’s when her science background really kicked in. “I wanted to figure out how to make myself the healthiest candle possible,” she said. “I wanted to make soy burning candles with allcotton or paper wicks to make sure that’s clean. Probably the part that took the longest was researching all of the fragrance oils, different toxins to avoid, just making sure you use the cleanest ingredients possible.” It started out as something she was just doing for herself, but she quickly developed a surplus—and a passion for the craft. “I just kind of fell in love with making them and combining different scents to make new ones,” she said. “It got to the point where I had too many candles, so I started giving them to my friends. Then it started to get a little expensive. So my friends were like, ‘I love the candles, I love how clean they are. You can tell how clean they are when they’re burning because they just feel better. I would be willing to buy it from you if that’s what needs to happen.’” Ayers gave it some thought, but she was leer y at first. “I’m a teacher,” she said. “I’m not a businesswoman. But people were assuring me they liked the candles

“Vacation-in-a-Jar,” scents based on a Zodiac sign theme—but one of her favorites is the Bordentown Collection. “We take pride in our little historical city and thought it would be fun

to make candles to honor our city, our histor y and our culture,” Ayers says about the collection on the Dancing Flame website. “Whether you live in Bordentown, love to come visit our fun shops, restaurants and festivals or just appreciate a great smelling candle, you will love the charm that these candles bring into your home.” The Bordentown Collection includes five scents: Bordentown Cranberr y, Clara Barton’s Schoolhouse, the Farmer’s Market, Bonaparte’s Point Breeze and Common Sense. Bordentown Cranberr y, though, is the one that started the line. “It started off in the fall/winter collection,” Ayers said. “I had a cranberr y smell, and I called it Bordentown Cranberr y. I was thinking about the Cranberr y Festival, the Ocean Spray plant and the histor y behind that, how Bordentown kind of associates itself with cranberries. I thought, ‘I can make this a homage to the hometown and where it all started.’” That started the nerd-gears turning in her head again. “I noticed that a lot of people from Bordentown liked the fact that it said ‘Bordentown’ in the candle name,” she said. “That got me thinking. I joined the Bordentown Historical society recently. I’ve always appreciated histor y. As I started learning about Bordentown, I thought it might be fun to

make a candle to go with each little bit of histor y, so I can kind of add in the education angle. If you read the description on the website, it gives you a little snippet of histor y. I liked the idea of raising awareness, teaching a little bit and adding a little bit of hometown flair.” Ayers has lived in the area for about five years, starting in the township and then moving to the city last Thanksgiving. Her brother and her mom both live in town— good for a number of reasons, she said, but in part because starting Dancing Flame really became a group effort. “I never really had any experience with small business before at all,” she said. “My uncle is an accountant, and he gave me tips that were great. My fiance was a marketing major, so he was able to help a little bit. My brother works in sales. They all kind of helped me out, but mostly, I figured it out on my own. Luckily, I was home, so I had the time.” One thing she didn’t have to worr y about, though, was creativity. “I’ve always kind of been a crafty person,” she said. “Even when I was little, I’d make friendship bracelets. As I got older, I would make things for the house. It doesn’t surprise me that I got into it. I’m surprised I didn’t get into it earlier.” That came in handy when she started experimenting with scents. At first, she chose fragrances that

appealed to her. Then, she started asking her friends for input during outdoor hangouts over the summer. “I realized that there are a lot of scents that other people really like,” she said. “I ventured to where I tr y to have a variety. I’ll always have florals, clean scents, sweet baked goods, masculine scents, woody scents. I tr y to make sure I touch base on those in at least ever y collection.” That’s also where her science background kicks in. “Mixing scents is just experimenting,” she said. “It’s a pretty long process. I go through a lot of candles just testing them on myself, making sure it smells good when it’s lit and not lit. Sometimes you can smell the oil, and then when it’s put into the candle, it smells like something completely different. It’s a lot of testing and a lot of trial and error.” In town, Dancing Flame products are available at Mimosa Goods, a partnership Ayers said she really values. “Sarah is awesome,” she said. “She’s honestly been with me from the ver y start. When I first started this as a business, she was the first person I went to. I’m ver y, ver y happy to have my candles there.” In the future, she hopes to continue selling her wares at Mimosa Goods. She has other ideas, too, including a BYO candle making studio where guests can make

their own candles with the help of employees with special needs. Her largest goal, though, is to produce the candles in a facility where adults with special needs can gain work experience. For now, though, Ayers says she’s taking ever ything one day at a time. “If you asked me a year ago if I’d have my own candle company, I would have thought you were crazy,” she said. “Reflecting on the

whole experience, it’s really meant a lot having my friends and family support me, having people support small businesses, not just my own, during such a tough time. Candle making brings me so much joy, and I just really appreciate it.” For more information or to order, visit dancingflamecandleco.com. LETTER OF INTENT SIGNED BY

Capital Health and St. Francis Medical Center and positively impact the health and well-being of local and regional residents.”

Capital Health and St. Francis Medical Center, a member of Trinity Health, have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI). Under this LOI, St. Francis Medical Center will become a part of Capital Health. The non-binding LOI is the first step in evaluating and designing a framework that will enhance health care services and create a new model of care for residents of Trenton and the surrounding area. The goal is to work toward a definitive agreement that will create a more comprehensive and sustainable health care system for our community. “From its founding as the city’s first hospital in 1874 to its important role as an acute care teaching hospital and Mercer County’s only provider of comprehensive cardiac surgery, St. Francis Medical Center has always put the needs of Trenton and surrounding neighborhoods first,” said Al Maghazehe, President and CEO of Capital Health. “This approach aligns very well with Capital Health’s mission, and we are committed to our shared vision of providing the highest level of care for the community.” “The health care industry is always evolving to advance medicine and improve delivery of care to the communities we serve,” said Samuel J. Plumeri, Jr., chairman of Capital Healthcare, Inc. Board of Trustees. “The changes we’re seeing here in Mercer County are a reflection of what’s going on nationally, but our neighbors in Trenton and nearby communities can rest assured that we will continue to keep their interests at the center of all we do.” Both hospitals are known for providing advanced care and for ensuring local access to high-quality, comprehensive and affordable health care services. “Both Capital Health and St. Francis Medical Center are deeply committed to caring for residents of our community,” said Daniel P. Moen, President and Chief Executive Officer, St. Francis Medical Center. “The rapidly changing healthcare landscape presents challenges, but it is through a shared mission that both organizations look to expand services

“As a safety net hospital, ensuring the community has access to care is the heart of our mission,” said Joseph Youngblood, II, J.D., Ph.D., Chairman, Board of Trustees, St. Francis Medical Center. “In response to a broad national transformation of health care, we look to combine our strengths with those of Capital, a healthcare leader, and grow services for our residents. Together, we are steadfast in our commitment to provide area residents, including the underserved with highquality, comprehensive care and to improve the delivery of healthcare for our community. Our partnership with Capital Health will be a fitting legacy to the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for their decades of service to Trenton and Mercer County.” Capital Health and St. Francis now enter a period of due diligence. The process includes evaluation and discussion to determine how to best combine and enhance their capabilities to more effectively fulfill their missions to the citizens of Trenton and the surrounding area. Approvals will be necessary from State and Federal officials and others before the transaction is able to be completed. Throughout the process, Capital Health and St. Francis remain committed to sustaining and advancing the comprehensive, high quality services they provide to residents of the greater Trenton area. Areas of focus will include exploring opportunities to expand access to care and improved efficiency in health care delivery. The new combined system will be secular (Non-Catholic). Capital Health is the Central New Jersey/Lower Bucks County region’s leader in providing progressive, quality patient care with significant investments in physicians, nurses and staff, as well as advanced technology. Comprised of two hospitals (Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton and Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell), a Hamilton outpatient facility, and various primary and specialty care practices across the region, Capital Health is a dynamic health care resource accredited by DNV GL - Healthcare. patients will now have access to additional treatment options for liver abnormalities through Capital Health.” Capital Health offers bloodless liver surgery and liver autotransplant surgery performed by CATALDO DORIA, MD, PHD, MBA, FACS, an internationally renowned hepatopancreato-biliary surgeon who helped develop these innovative techniques. As part of this new partnership, Temple patients who are candidates for these advanced surgical procedures will be referred to Capital Health.

“Temple Health is a nationally recognized leader in health care and the perfect partner to complement the innovative surgical services offered at Capital Health, such as liver auto-transplant surgery, bloodless liver surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery across our service lines,” said Al Maghazehe, PhD, FACHE, President and CEO of Capital Health. “Similarly, Temple University Hospital patients who are approved candidates will receive their procedures at Capital Health but will receive pre- and post-surgery care and related diagnostic tests close to home at Temple University Hospital under the direction of both Temple and Capital Health physicians. Through this affiliation with Temple, we’re thrilled to provide patients access to the most innovative liver surgery and transplant options in a way that keeps them closer to home and their loved ones throughout their course of treatment.”

Temple University Hospital’s team has decades of experience in caring for patients with chronic liver diseases, including hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease and liver cancer as well as those suffering from drug toxicity or a rare metabolic disease. Temple’s highly skilled, multidisciplinary team is led by ANTONIO DI CARLO, MD, CM, FACS, FRCSC, Associate Professor of Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) and Chief of Abdominal Organ Transplant Surgery at Temple University Hospital; and LEE F. As part of the new collaboration, Temple patients with pancreatic cancer who are appropriate candidates will also have access to complex open and robotic-assisted Whipple procedures performed by Dr. Doria. In September 2019, Capital Health became the first hospital in Central New Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia region to offer robotic-assisted Whipple procedures to treat pancreatic cancer.

what’s happening What makes your garden grow? Summer garden tours in full bloom By Sam Sciarrotta

They don’t call us the Garden State for nothing. Groups all across the region are planning outdoor garden tours to mark the transition from spring to summer. Here’s your guide to flowers, flora and greenery, throughout Burlington and Mercer counties.

Roebling

The Roebling Museum’s annual Garden Tour is back. The town, famous for building some of the country’s most iconic bridges, will celebrate warm weather and bright blooms June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “When the Roebling steel plant was open and homes in the company town were owned by the company, many of the workers and their families grew gardens with flowers as well as food,” says Lynne Calamia, Roebling Museum executive director. The Roebling Company itself often sponsored competitions to encourage

residents to tend their gardens and keep their properties looking put-together. “Continuing this tradition with our Garden Tour builds pride in our community and gives residents a chance to show off their green thumbs,” Calamia said. The Roebling Museum tells the story of the origins and growth of Roebling, a company town built in 1905 by the Roebling Company. The village of Roebling, including 700 homes, is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and every one of its buildings has a story to tell. Exhibits, tours, and programs document the majority immigrant workforce that built the iconic suspension bridges of the American industrial age. The tour will start at the Roebling Museum, located at 100 Second Ave. After checking in, participants will receive a map of locations included on the route, plus some added historic highlights. The tour is appropriate for walking, driving or biking, and a guided tour is also set for 1 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Proceeds support the museum. Register at roeblingmuseum.org, in person on the day of the tour or by calling (609) 499-7200.

Trenton The Old Mill Hill Society, in collaboration with residents of the historic neighborhood, will host its 30th annual Garden Tour June 12 from noon to 5 p.m., rain or shine. The neighborhood, composed primarily of 19th century row houses, will welcome guests in-person to the self-guided walking tour through 15 gardens— attendees will see the intersection of nature and city living, coupled with residents’ personal style. Settled in 1679, Mill Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Trenton

and the site of both battles of Trenton in 1776, where George Washington defeated the British Army and turned the tides of the Revolutionary War. Annual re-enactments take place in Mill Hill Park. The neighborhood of Mill Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. “Following last year’s virtual house tour, the Mill Hill neighborhood looks forward to once again welcoming new and returning guests,” said event cochair Amanda Chevalier. “We can’t wait to reconnect with visitors, share our welcoming and diverse community, and See GARDEN, Page 4

otox for migraines. Stem cell injections to regenerate tissue and organs. Gummy Bears infused with THC. Platelet-Rich Plasma to treat conditions from sports injuries and wounds to hair loss from chemotherapy. These are just a few of the cutting-edge therapies used by Dr. Ronak Patel, the founder and medical director of Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute in Plainsboro. “Many of these treatments may come as a surprise to patients suffering from chronic pain, especially those who think that their pain — and poor quality of life — is something they have to endure,” Dr. Patel notes. A double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, Dr. Patel focuses on treating pain in the back, neck, face, and joints as well as pain related to cancer and chemotherapy. With so many different pain-causing illnesses, injuries, and conditions, treatments must be carefully customized to fit the needs of each individual patient. Dr. Patel partners with orthopedists, physical and occupational therapists, and chiropractors to provide a variety of approaches and treatments. With

Regenerative Medicine/ Stem Cell Therapy. Regenerative medicine is a fastgrowing, highly developed treatment that helps the body heal or rebuild itself. Dr. Patel uses stem cell therapy to treat ailments, particularly low back or neck pain, caused by degenerative vertebral discs or joint pain in the shoulders, hips, or knees caused by osteoarthritis. The patient’s stem cells are removed, purified, concentrated, and injected into the injured or weakened tissue. Stem cell therapy can also speed recovery and help avoid surgery. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). A favorite treatment for sports injuries, PRP uses the patient’s blood to produce a platelet-rich plasma that targets a host of chronic and acute pain conditions, including muscle strain, arthritis, tendinosis, cartilage injuries, joint inflammation, and wound care. The treatment is also used in orthopedic and plastic surgery. By synthesizing platelets and releasing proteins, PRP can aid in generating new tissue. And it has helped chemotherapy patients grow back hair faster and thicker.

Cannabis Therapy. The legalization of medical marijuana has brought new treatment options. “We are very excited by the potential of cannabis-based treatments and we comply fully with New Jersey’s evolving regulations,” says Dr. Patel. He uses a local dispensary to provide treatments, which include edibles such as gummy bears and cannabis-based rubbing and vaping oils. Minimally Invasive Therapy. The next generation of filmmaking Toby Ilogu talks creating in 2021 By Sam Sciarrotta

Toby Ilogu is always up to something. The 19-year-old Montgomery resident loves to dive headfirst into a project, whether it’s studying cryptocurrency or making short films. Now, he’s channeling his energy into TikTok, where he’s amassed over 100,000 followers, starting with first-person videos and evolving into the Everyday Show series, where he dons a suit, sets up camp in Princeton and conducts man-on-the-street-style interviews with anybody who wants to participate. Ilogu, a graduate of the Lawrenceville School and now a film student at USC, asks whimsical questions like “Are you stupid?” and “Name that Black celebrity.” The videos usually take their own form from there. “I’m very much into that raw, semiawkward humor,” he said. We sat down with Ilogu and talked quarantine creativity, Gen Z filmmaking and more. An edited version of the interview follows. *** Six09: What was it like to start your first year of college in the middle of all of this? Ilogu: I was able to do my fall semester. Film school was my dream. Early on in high school, I knew that I wanted to pursue video or film school in some capacity. USC was, like, the college on the hill. It was my dream school. When I got in, it was a dream come true. I was living the dream for a few months until COVID came around and really just shook everything up. My dream school turned into a nightmare. I did this fall semester online, and right before the spring semester, I thought, “I can’t do this. I hate this experience.” It was supposed to be the best thing in the world. I talked to my parents and very heavily petitioned to take the spring semester off. That’s what I ended up doing. Six09: Are you going back in the fall? Ilogu: That’s the plan. Mid-August, actually. Six09: You said that you’ve been interested in filmmaking forever. What sparked that interest for you? Were there any filmmakers that you admired as a kid? What made you dive into that? Ilogu: A lot of people might say, “I grew up watching these films. My parents put me onto Scorsese and Speilberg.” Quite honestly, that wasn’t me. I grew up on YouTube. I was on YouTube

earlier than I should’ve been. When I was growing up, my parents told my two older siblings and I, “No watching TV during the week.” Most of elementary school, I was reading a lot. I was always checking stuff out from the library. Then, we got a laptop, and that’s when I started perusing the internet. YouTube was there, and I was like, “Well, it’s not TV.” Six09: That’s the loophole. Ilogu: Exactly. I looked up to YouTube stars early on, more than any film director. Six09: I feel like that’s kind of the path that a lot of creators in your generation are following. Do you see that, too? Ilogu: Yeah. At film school, there are a lot of purists. People will say, “The YouTube stuff, that’s not real filmmaking. TikTok is a bastardized version of visual media.” But this is the stuff that I like. By all means, people can pursue what they want to pursue. I’ve heard that you go to a classroom of third graders, and half of them will say they want to be YouTubers when they grow up. Those are the people they’re engaging with. And it’s such a versatile medium. Anybody with just about any passion could make content around that passion. I think it’s just a matter of what people are being exposed to at a young age. Six09: Is that how you got into TikTok? Ilogu: From the start, I always took a very strategic approach to TikTok. I didn’t just stumble onto the app. I knew of TikTok when it was musical.ly. I would watch these YouTube compilations of cringey kids lipsyncing to songs. I was like, “I don’t think this stuff is for me.” But then I thought, “Wait a second, there’s so much potential.” The app can be anything that you make it. You can’t pigeonhole a whole platform just by the content that a handful of people are making. My first venture into TikTok was when I got to college, toward the end of 2019. I started with a joint account. The plan was that a few of us on the floor I was living on were going to make cinematic TikToks. Eventually, most of the group lost interest. That was it for some time. I kept the app for a little bit, then deleted it. It was on and off until quarantine, where I said, “Yeah, let me start making TikToks.” I feel like there’s a lot of potential to just grow an audience. I’m not exactly sure what it is I want to do in the future, but whatever it is, if it’s creative, it’s going to need an audience. Six09: Did it kind of help you pass the time during quarantine after starting at your dream school and

then coming back home and doing it all online? Did TikTok help you channel your creativity? Ilogu: Yeah, that’s a narrative that a lot of people seem to have. That’s exactly what it was. Also, me personally, I always have some sort of mission. I like to feel like I’m working toward something. I had a whole bunch of different things I was doing, but TikTok was the throughline. All throughout quarantine, I was HSM Shredders learning about different things. First, it Strip & Cross-Cut Cross was investing and technical imbalances and cryptocurrency. Just general entrepreneurship. I launched a few Shopify Mail Handling stores. But the main thing was TikTok. Copy, Print, Six09: When did you get started with The Ever yday Show? What was Fax & Scan the inspiration behind that? Monochrome Ilogu: There was a lot leading up to it. Lenovo Computers & I was on TikTok trying to grow. I think I Laser MFPs Managed IT Services reached about 10,000 followers by doing as low as $595 money story videos. I would find a headBy Barracu & Avast line related to money, like Tom Brady’s Copiers | Computers & Networks | Printers | Shredders |Mailing Solutions |Facsimile real estate career around the Super Bowl. successful. What I find is that the most viral videos are always interacting with other people. There’s a certain element that you can’t get from a bedroom. I believe as a creator, you need to break the bedroom wall at some point, or else you’ll always be confined to those four walls. I know that the public interview is a viral format. It just works. I said to myself, “How can I do this in a way that is true to me?” I definitely got inspiration from Jimmy Kimmel’s Pedestrian Questions. And I knew that I wanted to carry the suit somehow. It was working before. I came up with the idea, and I just sort of did it. Six09: You seem so well-suited to that man-on-the-street kind of interview. Does that come naturally to you, or do you have to psych yourself up before you go outside and start asking people these questions? Ilogu: I do have experience with video journalism. Lawrenceville has a newscast, and from 2015 to 2019, that was my thing. That’s where I learned how to edit videos. Everything I know about videography, framing, the on-camera presence, everything I know came from that video news club. It really is one of the best high school news shows in the world. I’m not just saying that. What they’re doing is very special, and it gave me everything I needed to know to keep doing this creative stuff. I have experience on both sides of the camera. But there are awkward moments. I’m not a natural at all. And I put it into the video. If it’s awkward, it’s because I’m awkward in that moment. Sometimes I’m in character, kind of a game show host, and other times, Toby just sort of seeps out, and Toby doesn’t always say the right thing at the right time. Toby isn’t always the most conversational in the traditional sense. I think that just adds to the show. One of the Are You Stupid videos, the person said “Yes.” I said, “What’s the last dumb thing that you did?” “This interview.” I was like, “Wow, she really said that.” I had to walk it off a little bit. I was shook. Six09: Has it been easier to approach people now that people are getting vaccinated and things are starting to open up a little more? Ilogu: Oh, definitely. A lot of people are a lot more comfortable being approached and being around other people. Honestly, I think my show kind of celebrates that. It celebrates getting back to some type of normalcy, even if that’s just everyday interactions that you have on the street. I guess that’s building a little bit of a narrative around the name. I was thinking, like, Late Night, The Tonight Show. How about The Everyday Show? I wanted to post on TikTok just about every day, so I thought it could work. Beyond that, I’m approaching everyday people on the street. One way of growing on social media is a name drop. But the main draw isn’t toward the creator or the content. It’s likely toward that other person. I feel like that’s not very conducive to a long-term relationship, especially if you’re a new creator. With everyday people, I’m not chatting with celebrities. It’s not an aspirational thing I’m going for with my content. It’s more like conversations. Yeah, they’re awkward, but that’s like. Life is awkward. We gotta lean into that more.

Restaurants still getting winged by pandemic Occupancy limits are lifted, but rising costs and staffing issues are testing the entire food industry By Joe Emanski

New Jersey restaurateurs waited a long time for the day to come when they could once again fill their establishments to capacity. So when Gov. Phil Murphy made the announcement in early May relaxing capacity restrictions and seat customers at the bar, it was expected to be an occasion for celebration. But few restaurant owners have been in the mood to celebrate lately. It turns out that coming out of a pandemic isn’t any easier than heading into one. While 2020 felt like one long harrowing crisis, this year has brought on many new crises of its own. Like the dishwasher shortage. The foam container shortage. The lobster shortage. And, of course, the Great Chicken Wing Shortage of 2021. “We are having more problems now, honestly, than during COVID,” says

Giovanni “John” Balsamo, who coowns Villaggio Iccara in Yardville with his wife, Phyllis. “Yes, the drop in the amount of business was not good, but also we cut down on huge expenses so we survived, and we had a beautiful take out business. But now I’m having more trouble figuring it out. Between food cost and labor … it’s not sustainable.” Restaurants know that things will happen from time to time to disrupt the supply chain: a temporary milk shortage can cause cheese prices to rise, mudslides in California can send produce prices through the roof for a few weeks, until supply returns to normal. “You cope with that,” Balsamo says. “What we cannot cope with is when a case of wings goes from $68 to $139.” A specialty of the house at Iccara is an appetizer of chicken wings that are roasted in the restaurant’s wood-fired brick oven. But in May, Balsamo took the wings off the menu, rather than raise the price of the dish to reflect the rise in his cost. “People love our wings. so they say, ‘Why don’t you charge $3 more?’ Because I love my customers,” he says. “They’ve supported us for 30 years. I don’t want to do that to them.” Balsamo says scallops that recently cost

Taco-spiced chicken wings from Wildflowers in Pennington. The wholesale cost of wings has risen to a point where some restaurants are taking them off the menu. (Facebook photo.) him $18 a pound now cost $34, and other shellfish are along similar lines. The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported last month that Maine seafood shacks were charging as much $34 for a lobster roll. Balsamo said he probably will have to

increase the prices on many items on his menu by a dollar to a dollar-fifty, which would not cover the price increases, but which would at least help him close the gap. Customers may not always believe it, but restaurateurs are usually reluctant to increase their prices. “There is a line that you don’t want to cross. You don’t want people to think it’s too expensive to go out to eat, let’s find an alternative,” Balsamo says. “The less the price, the more business you do. But if it costs you $1,000 more every week to buy chicken, you’ve got to increase prices at least a dollar.” So why the rise in prices now? Weather is one reason. A huge winter storm swept the Southwestern United States and Mexico in February, leaving huge swaths of Texas without power for days. The poultry and livestock industries are still bouncing back from losses suffered as a result of the storm. A harsh winter has also been cited as a factor in the decreased supply of Maine lobsters. Bad weather has meant fewer boats on the water, and fewer lobsters in it. Kinks in the supply chain also continue to bedevil the industry on a number of fronts. The Department of Agriculture, in its April Labor, Poultry and Livestock

Outlook, cited labor issues (read: a lack of qualified workers) as a factor in the reduced supply of chicken. But the main reason prices are up and supply is strained is simply high demand. Prices actually jumped even higher at the start of the pandemic, when there were breakdowns up and down the supply chains — but that came at a time when demand was very low. Now, restaurants are gearing up for more customers, and some of them want to be fed like they haven’t had a good steak in a year. Those restaurants purged much of their cold-stored food during the lean months of the pandemic, meaning that many are now buying in large quantities to restock their freezers on top of serving fresh products today. Meanwhile, just too darn many people turned to chicken wings for comfort during the pandemic, and too many home cooks got comfortable using their air fryers over the past year. Retail demand remains high even as restaurants reopen, and producers will have to raise more animals to keep up. “As the restaurant sector begins to reopen, in the short term, supplying the growing demand for chicken will be a challenge,” wrote the Department of Agriculture in its May Outlook. *** There is also the question of where all the restaurant workers have gone. Now that restaurants are able to fill most of their seats again, most are anxiously on the lookout for cooks, servers, bartenders and dishwashers. And many are find-

Taste Trenton is coming back full throttle after suspending its 2020 self-guided tour of restaurants due to the coronavirus pandemic. After suspending its 2020 selfguided tour of Trenton restaurants, Taste Trenton has announced that it will curate an appropriately sociallydistanced excursion to the capital city’s restaurants this summer during the weekend of June 11–13. The not-for-profit effort, initially begun in 2016, is designed to introduce Trenton residents and guests from across the region to the vast culinary and eating options available in many corners of the city. What began as a day-long event with just a dozen restaurant in the Chambersburg region, evolved to three days and 40 establishments across the city in June 2019. “We’d been on the fence about offering the tour this summer,” Taste Trenton coordinator Bernard McMullan said in a media release. “But we decided to give our local restaurants a boost by getting people across their thresholds as soon as possible. We applaud their efforts to stay open during the past 15 months.” The format remains the same as in past years. Jeannette Hosri

Frank Collazo

Thomas Belardino

I came to Coleman 4 years ago with no automotive experience. I have continually earned the Top Sales Consultant title. I would attribute my success to my strong drive, product knowledge, motivation and listening skills. My goal is always to hear the wants and needs of customers throughout the sales process to give them a great buying experience. When I’m not working, I love to run.

Having worked at Coleman for 35 years, I feel my strongest attributes are my product knowledge and my friendly sales approach. I always put myself in my customers shoes, treating them as I would want to be treated. Speaking fluent Spanish is also very helpful. When I’m not selling cars, I love golfing and spending time with my two young children on roller coasters and water rides.

I joined the Coleman team 4 months ago but have over 30 years of retail and automotive experience. Customers can expect honesty, loyalty and a high commitment to customer service. I strive to make every customer’s experience at Coleman the best car buying experience they’ve ever had. As for my personal life, I spend most of my time with my family and friends and also enjoy sports.

SCIORTINO continued from Page 1 ment—so the decision wasn’t totally out of left field. “I knew I had the background and resources necessary to jump in and hit the ground running,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the exciting and challenging things that lie ahead.” Sciortino grew up in Middlesex County, where she graduated from Woodbridge High School. She went on to study English and journalism at Rutgers University and ultimately wanted to end up as a writer in some capacity. As college graduation loomed, though, a job opportunity opened up with the mayor of Perth Amboy. “I pursued it,” she said. “Job offerings were few and far between, and I wanted to get my foot in the door somewhere. I naturally learned to love government, but I hadn’t envisioned it in college.” And it’s something that has helped define Sciortino’s life, both in and out of her career. “The fact that you really have the opportunity to impact people’s lives, make change and help them for the better is what makes it great,” she said. “Some of the biggest gratification through work comes from connecting people to services they need.” That’s been especially true throughout the pandemic, she added. “Early on, it was harder to get a hold of people, so many people were

struggling,” she said. “Social media has really come into play, especially in the last year. As folks were working remotely, many people would message us on social media just as a last recourse because they couldn’t get a hold of anyone. We were able to connect them with services. I would love to see Bordentown City embracing those technologies, too.” Other areas of focus include the Divine Word and Ocean Spray properties—two developments that really drew Sciortino toward running for local office. “I love this city,” she said. “I say this often, but I don’t mean it lightly. The Divine Word property that Mayor Lynch was helpful in securing is especially exciting. There are so many possibilities. I’m excited to get involved. “And the Ocean Spray situation, that property was sold to a new developer. At one point, Ocean Spray was the city’s largest employer, taxpayer and water purchaser. When they moved out several years ago, it left a void. I wanted to jump in and help get this project back on track.” Sciortino said she has some other ideas about what she can bring to the city—namely, unity. The city is growing—she said around 200 homes have been sold in town over the last five years—and she wants all residents to feel represented and welcomed. “I’ve talked to a bunch of different neighborhoods over the last few

stay listed for more than a week. It’s like the rest of the state is finally discovering what we’ve known all along. It’s unique, it’s in an ideal location. We have the river and so many major highways nearby. There’s amazing histor y as far as our countr y and its early foundings. It has walkability, which is such a prime quality that so many people are looking for.” She credits the city’s business community, in part, with helping it grow. “So many people are coming in from out of town,” she said. “At first, it was very insular—businesses were propped up by the residents. Now, visitors are coming more and more, and you really have to credit the Downtown Bordentown Association with marketing.” To be a part of that, Sciortino said, is a dream come true. “It’s a tremendous honor,” she said. “It’s surreal at the moment. It’s one thing to have the support of your friends and neighbors, but to have the support of people I may have just met or haven’t met yet, that’s a true honor. It’s not something I take lightly. My door will always be open. I’m always here to listen. I recognize that my experiences may not be the same as someone else’s, but I want to be an advocate for everyone who calls this city home.”

months,” she said. “Some feel more excluded than others. I’d like to see us bring the community together more. We all have common goals and a mutual love for this city.” As for the city’s rapid growth—and her own love for it—she says there’s not enough time in the day to go into all of the reasons why. What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? When the pandemic first began, I never thought that it would continue through my senior year, but I personally made the best out of it. I continued to stay focused on academics while still making the most out of my senior year.

What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? It was rough missing out on a lot of the experiences I was already set to have. Without many capabilities to talk with friends that I used to see in school I’m glad that there was still a functioning band program and good grades to keep me motivated.

SPORTS Hoppe ‘taking the mound by storm’ for Scotties By Rich Fisher

Despite losing last year to COVID19 shutdowns after reaching the 2019 NJSIAA Group II state final, Bordentown High’s softball team still had four solid starters returning this year in senior Hailey Cope and juniors Angelina Marino, Brianna Fischer and Sofia Peterson. That in itself led to promise, and the addition of talented newcomers has helped turn that promise into results as the Scotties were 13-1 as of May 24. The most important new face— if only because of the nature of the position—has been Allison Hoppe. In 65-2/3 innings, the sophomore pitcher was 8-1, having allowed just 40 hits and 25 walks while striking out 82. She yielded only nine runs (seven earned) in fashioning a 0.75 earned run average. “She’s been really consistent for the most part,” Bordentown coach Nicole O’Leary said. “She’s definitely taking the mound by storm and shown what she has. I think her composure and going out there and working hard every day in practice is big. She’s continually making herself better and it

does help that our younger group of girls all know each other so she does have some corral of comfort around her which could definitely help. Her sister’s on the team so she had that little added sense of comfort that I think helped.” Oh yes. In case Allison isn’t a big enough contribution from the Hoppe family, her twin sister Erin was 5-0 and had not allowed an earned run in 27-1/3 innings. The sisters are part of a large nucleus of players from the Bordentown Bombers travel team, which was started by the Hoppe’s father, Michael, when the girls were playing at the 10U level. “My dad just started it up and didn’t know a lot about softball, but he started working at it,” Hoppe said. “He started learning as

we were playing.” He apparently learned his lessons well, as Hoppe said all but four of the current Scotties roster are on the Bombers. “It’s a great atmosphere here and kind of calms my nerves whenever I go out there,” Hoppe said. “We’ve grown up together, that definitely helps. And the older girls, with their experience, that definitely helps too.” Aside from their leadership, the veterans are contributing statistically as well. Through 14 games Peterson led the team in batting (.412), RBIs (16) and runs (12) and Marino was batting .436 with a team high 24 hits and seven doubles. Fischer was at .370 with eight RBIs and 12 runs scored and Cope was batting .288 with five RBIs and

nine runs. Leading hitters among the first-year players are freshman Kaci Benton (.378) and Erin Hoppe (.319). “Overall this team has exceeded a lot of my expectations,” O’Leary said. “Taking a year off you don’t get to see what the girls have done in that period of time. Are they still playing and practicing? Are they getting reps in? But they worked out every day and did some team bonding so when we got them in person they were that much more acclimated with each other and I think that helped. It’s just a really great group of young ladies. They get along so well, they talk outside of practice and keep that cohesion which really helps when it comes into game time.” In softball, however, the biggest help will always be a strong pitcher, and Hoppe has certainly provided that. She started in Bordentown Little League at a young age and began pitching at age 9. “I wasn’t the best pitcher,” she said. “I just kept working at it. I would go to pitching lessons and throw with my dad on the side as much as I

SAY GOODBYE TO BACK & LEG PAIN...

WITHOUT SURGERY!

30 Million Americans suffer from back pain everyday. This affects everything that they do, from work to play and ultimately their quality of life. 7 out of 10 people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives and it is one of the most common reason for patient visits to primary care physicians. There is no doubt that low back pain exists in epidemic proportions today.

could. When I first started I was just throwing fastballs as fast as I could, and slowly I gained control of my pitches.” Hoppe began taking lessons from the late Jerry Herrera, one of the area’s most renowned pitching coaches. Since Herrara passed she has been with Rachel Gagliardo for the past several years. “Jerry taught me all my pitches,” said Hoppe, who went undefeated pitching in middle school. “I didn’t know how to pitch at all. Around 12U my hard work paid off. I started getting more innings in. I just kept working hard on my pitching, my spins.” As Hoppe began to learn more pitches, she said “My confidence started to get better. When a pitch was called, I knew I could hit the spot with it.” O’Leary is impressed with her hurler’s arsenal, saying “She has six or seven different pitches. She moves the ball in and out, fast and slow. She just keeps it moving.” Like everyone else, Hoppe was distraught when last season was shut down. She did, however, see a bright side. “It gave me the opportunity to work more on softball,” she said. “We basically had full days to play softball. So we just went to the field, my sisters and I (she has sister in 8th grade), and we just practiced all the time.” It obviously helped make a difference. “For having a year off and it being your first year in high school she’s definitely exceeded my expectations coming in and getting the job done and doing it well and being a leader in

that position,” O’Leary said. “It’s great to see for a sophomore who didn’t get a freshman year.” One of the more impressive factors has been an increase in Hoppe’s strikeouts from middle school and travel ball. “I‘ve always thrown a lot of strikes, I really don’t know why I’m getting more this year,” she said. “I think it’s mixing the pitch calling and having a great defense behind me so I have confidence to throw strikes to certain spots and if they hit it, the defense will get it. But if they swing and miss that just works more to my favor.” Hoppe also credits Fischer behind the plate for being a big help. “She does a great job of keeping me calm,” Hoppe said. “She’s just really energetic and really motivating. That definitely helps.” It doesn’t hurt that Allison has her own mental toughness in the circle. “That’s something she came in with all on her own,” O’Leary said. “She didn’t have a year, per se, to pitch some games and learn some from upperclassmen. She kind of just came in and took it on and she’s done really well with it. “It was absolutely a concern not knowing how she’s gonna do under pressure in these big games. You just don’t know. But she’s come in and held her head high, and she’s worked. She’s walked batters and come back and gotten strikeouts right after. She’s definitely kept composure and worked through some tough innings with runners on and gotten out of different situations. She’s definitely stepped it up.” And she has provided the main component all softball teams must have.

There are many causes of back pain. Some people develop it over time, others are injured in sports, work or accidents. Most people complain of pain and numbness in their legs, usually the result of spinal conditions such as sciatica, stenosis and herniated discs. Regardless of the cause, people cope with pain in several different ways. Many people try to wait back pain out only to find that it keeps getting worse. They buy new mattresses, try different stretching exercises, learn new techniques for sitting and standing, yet their conditions do not improve. Some make repeated unsuccessful trips back and forth between their doctor, chiropractors, and/or physical therapists. Others opt for surgery, and while it is true that surgery may be the answer for certain types of back injured, it is highly invasive and not without serious risks.

The Mailliards: American soil beneath their feet DOUG KIOVSKY THE BEND IN THE RIVER

After the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire in 1815, political unrest forced Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother, Joseph, into self-imposed exile by seeking refuge in America with a small entourage of servants. This consisted of a domestic household staff of five men, a coachman, a cook named Francois Parrot, an American interpreter and land agent named James Carret, and a 20-year-old secretary named Louis Mailliard. However, Louis’ occupation was a far cry more than that of a faithful secretary. He was Joseph’s closest confidant and loyal friend. Born into a family that served as staff at a 17th century castle in Mortefontaine, France, Louis was three years old when the property was acquired by Joseph Bonaparte as a country estate. By the time that he reached the age of twelve, he took on challenging political and personal assignments under the direction of his employer. Undoubtedly, there was an immense whirlwind of activity that Louis had to carefully navigate during the period of Joseph’s reign in Naples and then in Spain. When he was able to return to Mortefontaine, he fell in love with the beautiful daughter of the Master of Horse that worked for Joseph’s wife Julie. Her name was Marguerite Angelique

Redet. On Sept. 1, 1818, the young couple was blissfully wed in an elaborate ceremony within the castle’s walls. A year before the nuptials occurred, Louis was residing at Point Breeze. In order for Joseph to advance the grand plans that he conceptualized for his estate, he instructed Louis to return to Europe and retrieve a wooden chest filled with money, jewels, and documents that both of them had buried on his property in Prangins, Switzerland. Wearing a disguise, Louis, with the help of Joseph’s Swiss financial administrator and shovels in hand, waited until nightfall to dig where the chest was precisely located. Upon extracting it from the earth, they discreetly removed the contents as they cross-referenced an inventory list that Louis had kept in his pocket. Among the treasures were small boxes cradling sixteen diamonds. Joseph was pleasantly relieved when Louis brought the wooden chest and its cargo safely back across the Atlantic. By the end of 1818, Louis and his bride were living in the unfinished mansion. Since Marguerite’s family was employed with Joseph’s estate in France, he hired her to address daily chores. Life was euphoric at Point Breeze. On Aug. 5, 1819, she gave birth to a son named Adolphe. But that exuberance was drowned by sorrow as Marguerite became ill and died of complications from childbirth. Devastated, Louis had his infant son raised in France

by his in-laws. He never remarried and mourned the loss for the rest of his life. Five months after his son entered the world, the mansion was destroyed in a spectacular fire. The rebuilding of another mansion paralleled Louis’ own life as he struggled from the ashes. Lonely and ill, before Joseph left the palatial surroundings of Point Breeze in 1839 to be reunited with his wife Julie in Florence, Italy, he made Louis and his dear friend, Joseph Hopkinson, the executors of his estate. When he finally slipped the surly bonds of Earth into eternity five years later as the result of a second stroke, it was Louis who provided comfort at his bedside. Returning to this country, he took on the unimaginable task of administering the estate by himself since Hopkinson had died two years earlier. In addition, he took care of Queen Julie’s property in Florence when she died a year after Joseph in 1845. Therefore, he was simultaneously responsible for real estate transactions in two different countries that involved different languages and legal systems. To complicate matters, the late king’s daughter, Zenaide and her husband, Charles Lucien, were uncivil towards Louis regarding their inheritance. Fortunately, their oldest son, Joseph, and Louis’ son, Adolphe, joined him in settling any affairs. They contacted a reputable New York banking firm known as Prime, Ward and Company where Joseph had most of his

finances managed while residing in America. Although its partner, Samuel Ward III, died in 1839, his son, Samuel Cutler Ward continued the business under the directorship of his uncle, John Ward. In the process, young Samuel became a close friend of Adolphe. It wasn’t long before he was invited to gatherings at the Ward home near Broadway in New York City. The family was highly influential among the social elite. Among immediate family, Samuel’s oldest sister, Julia, was an antislavery leader. In 1862, she composed the stirring “Battle Hymn of the Republic” as the Civil War raged. As a champion of women’s rights, she advocated for Mother’s Day in becoming a national holiday. Given the circumstances, it seemed fitting for Adolphe to court Samuel’s youngest sister, Ann. Overcome with emotion, Louis approved the union. In 1846, the marriage took place in the lavishly decorated parlor of the Ward home. Following the ceremony, the couple resided in a beautiful home on the Spring Villa Female Seminary campus in Bordentown. This was not coincidental since the land was purchased by Joseph Bonaparte a few years before his departure. From 1845 to 1847, Louis conducted business from the estate’s Lake House. Being in close proximity to his son’s home, he was welcomed on many occasions and was present when his granddaughter, Louise, was born. Shortly after, he moved to a farm in Groveville that was

bequeathed to him by his former mentor. In that same year, Prince Joseph held a public auction at Point Breeze by selling off its exquisite collection of paintings, sculpture, and furniture. By fall, the banking firm of Samuel Ward collapsed due to practices of mismanagement. With little means of financial support, Samuel and his wife moved to Spring Villa in Bordentown while he contemplated his future. That revelation came to him one day upon reading about the discovery of gold in California. In 1849, Samuel traveled to the West Coast with the same allure that enticed hundreds of thousands of individuals with the promise of making easy money. While in California, he opened a store and was involved in several land schemes where he lost and regained his wealth more than once. When he returned to Bordentown a year later, he infused Adolphe with stories of adventure. For Louis, talk of this nature went against the fiber of his being as he and his son frequently argued. Adolphe decided to visit California for himself. With the real estate transaction complete, Louis was overwhelmed by loneliness. Yearning for the comfort of his beloved Mortefontaine, he sold his Groveville farm and left the United States in 1851. Seven years after completing his new home in France, he returned to Bordentown to see his son and grandchildren again. Indeed, it was time to make amends. Adolphe showed his father the horse-breeding farm that he developed and the crops that he had grown. The landscape displayed elegant trees that Louis admired. Several

months later, Adolphe shipped several saplings by steamer to Mortefontaine so that Louis would always have a part of Bordentown and Adolphe with him. By 1867, Adolphe was diagnosed with a lung ailment. Understanding that mountain air could improve his health, he made the trip to California again and purchased a ranch for $50,000 that owned by his wife’s brother, Henry. But before they moved, he would visit his father in France for the last time. When he left, they hugged but not before Louis showered him with gifts for his four grandchildren. Lonely no longer, serenity blanketed his soul when he passed away in 1872. In January of 1868, Adolphe and his family began the New Year with a new life in San Rafael near San Francisco. The same year that his father died, the Mailliards moved to San Geronimo Valley and built three ranches for their horse-breeding business. Among those that visited the family were Adolphe’s sister-in-law, Julia Ward Howe and Alexander Graham Bell, who installed one of the first telephones in California at the three ranches. Ann and Adolphe lived out the rest of their lives on their ranch until their deaths in 1895 and 1896. And what became of the wooden chest that was retrieved from Joseph Bonaparte’s Swiss estate and brought to Point Breeze two centuries ago? Now considered a treasure itself, it is on display at the Marin County Historical Society.
