The Watershed Institute The Watershed Academy Mixes College Prep and the Great Outdoors The Watershed Academy for High School Students, a series of week-long environmental investigations, is designed to immerse students in the world of science. Students will ask questions and identify problems; gain skills and knowledge; propose solutions; and gain valuable firsthand exposure to career opportunities. Prepared by The Watershed Institute in Pennington, New Jersey, classes for high school students help bridge the gap between quality time outside in nature and college prep. Conducted by the Institute’s professional staff and other experts ADVERTISING S C N DIRECTOR Thomas Fritts x110 PRODUCTION MANAGER Stacey Micallef x131 SPECIAL SECTIONS COORDINATOR Sara Hastings x206 Copyright 2019 by Community News Service LLC, 15 Princess Road, Lawrenceville 08648. 609-396-1511 | www.mercercamps.com

within the community, the Academy focuses on an assortment of important environmental topics and will expose students to an array of valuable experiences in realworld context. Topics include water quality, stream health, climate change, green architecture, and more. Two short sessions on environmental art and native wildlife, with a concentration on water, will wed science and art. Through Academy activities, students will engage in the scientific process; learn how to be responsible stewards of the resources in their community; work on green infrastructure projects; and work in the Watershed Institute’s upgraded environmental laboratory. Students will have an opportunity to be directly involved in the ongoing scientific studies at the Institute, both on and off of the Reserve, to help guide local, state, and federal agencies in environmental policy-making decisions. The Academy also offers opportunities for students to connect with

the Watershed staff and their partners for related independent studies, internships, and service learning credits. Discounts are available for Watershed Members and multiweek registrations! Scholarships are available in each class for qualified individuals. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day depending on trips. If you would like to apply for a scholarship for an Academy week, please inquire prior to registration with Tammy Love, Education Man-

ager, at tlove@thewatershed.org, or at 609-737-3735, ext. 42. For more information about the Watershed Academy or to register online, visit thewatershed.org/academy. The Watershed Institute

ful, safe, and nurturing campus setting. Our camp is both licensed by the state of New Jersey and accredited by the American Camp Association, whose standards cover all aspects of summer camp operations. “You can easily take an academic course in the morning and an athletic program in the afternoon,” says Administrative Director Rose Price. “The flexibility in scheduling allows parents to create summer camp ‘a la carte.’ Through the wide

array of academic, athletic, art, adventure, and enrichment offerings, parents can build an experience for their child that will effectively meet their child’s educational and recreational needs for a fulfilling summer. Our goal in Summer Programs is to provide children with a nurturing and stimulating environment, which will allow them to discover new interests, develop new talents and encourage exploration of the unknown,” Price adds. Choose Chess, Math, Language Arts, Cook-

ing, Archery, Ceramics, Gardening, a spectrum of sports options, and so much more. If you’re looking for a top-notch campus setting and a supportive, stimulating, and happy environment staffed by experts, explore Princeton Day School Summer Programs. Our faculty and programs guide children to discover and develop interests, skills and talents, encourage new explorations, and promote positive team membership and relationship-building. “Princeton Day School is well known for the extent to which our faculty and instructors know and understand each child participating in any of our programs,” Price says. “To help set expectations, complete descriptions of each program are listed on our website to ensure the child and parents understand the offerings and their goals,” she adds. YMCA Camp Mason Anywhere From Here

“At camp I can be myself.” – 8 year old girl

At YMCA Camp Mason we believe that every child has great potential and deserves the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. For more than 118 years we have built a caring, inclusive community that ensures kids have access to experiences that will help them learn, grow and thrive.

Ninety-eight percent of our camper parents report that their child felt a sense of belonging at camp, and 93 percent of parents indicated that their child’s self-image improved as a result of attending YMCA Camp Mason. By connecting youth with positive adult role models and encouraging the development of independence and strong values, your child will thrive at camp. Summer camp builds empathy, self-esteem, and a sense of discovery. Our campers walk away having made friends from all walks of life and feeling as though they really can go Anywhere From Here! Find out more at www.campmason.org or by calling 908-362-8217 or emailing information@campmason.org.

Hopewell Valley YMCA Hopewell Valley’s Best Camp for Working Families! Conveniently located at Toll Gate Elementary school in downtown Pennington, Hopewell Valley YMCA offers a high-quality state-licensed and ACA-accredited day camp experience for children ages 5 to 13 with daily swim instruction, weekly field trips, and a variety of fun filled outdoor and indoor activities led by highly trained staff. We offer two different camp options. Our Traditional Day Camp is for grades K-8, and our Tom Jackson Sports Camp is for grades 3-7. Our goal for our Traditional Day Camp is for campers to have fun and build lasting friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Campers will get to grow individually and as a team through our extensive hands-on curriculum. Campers will be placed in groups based on age and participate in specialty activities such as arts & crafts, games, sports, and science. All campers receive instructional and recreational swimming during the week as well as a daily snack. In addition, we

schedule weekly trips. Weekly trips and daily activities are selected to provide campers with a true camp experience. This camp runs from June 24 to August 30. Campers enrolled in the Tom Jackson Sports Camp will receive structured fun drills and activities in various sports during the course of the week to strengthen their sportsmanship and personal skills. All campers receive instructional and recreational swimming during the week as well as daily snack and weekly trips per scheduled groupings. Our sports camps are supported by the Hopewell Valley YMCA’s Tom Jackson Fund in honor of Thomas R. Jackson, a long time Pennington resident and dedicated sports enthusiast. Tom’s friends and family remember his dedication to an active and healthy life and as a person who epitomized the teamwork, determination, and competitive spirit of a champion. The community comes together each year in his honor at our annual Tom Jackson Champion Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the event go to the Tom Jackson Fund. Through this fund, Tom’s legacy and love of sports continues in support of Hopewell Valley YMCA youth sport programs so every child

in the Hopewell Valley community can participate and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. Our Tom Jackson Sports Camp runs from July 1 to August 16. In addition to offering two different types of camps, we also offer several time options for campers. By offering three different time options, the Hopewell Valley YMCA camp is able to give parents the flexibility they need when choosing a day camp for their children. Our Full Day camp runs from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., allowing parents time to drop kids off without being rushed in the morning, or having to leave work early to pick them up. In addition, we offer a Core Camp Day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a Flex Camp Day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parents can register for one of the three day length options at different price points to fit their particular schedule. In addition to our traditional camp activities, our Safety Town camp for children entering Kindergarten in

ducational summer dance programs for all ag

Fun and educational summer dance programs for all ag the fall is a community project designed to provide hands-on safety education for children. A realistic, child-sized town with miniature streets, buildings, crosswalks, and working traffic lights, Safety Town offers an authentic setting for bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicular safety instruction. Mercer County Community College Camp College ‘Campus Kids’ — Four-Week Session I, Session II Camp College offers your child an enriching alternative to the traditional summer day camp. Campers combine study in a variety of stimulating subject areas that emphasize intellectual growth and skills development with the fun of recreational activities. Participants choose up to six different “courses” for each fourweek session. Most courses meet 55 minutes daily for all weeks of each session. We have more than 90 courses to choose from! Friday Fun Days Designed especially for campers who are registered for the ‘Campus Kids’ Monday through Friday option only. Fridays are planned around fun activities and most programs have time for swimming. Specialty Camps Camp College offers more than 80 half-day Specialty Camp Workshops. Our programs include Arts, Crafts and More; Science and Technology; Computer; and Culinary. Campers can choose to take

a morning or afternoon class or choose two classes a week to make a complete day. Specialty Camp workshops provide a combination of intellectually challenging and stimulating hands-on summer opportunities for students who are interested in a wide variety of fields. Each of these programs has been designed to enable young people to meet and share the excitement of studies in academic fields not ordinarily encountered in elementary and middle school curriculum. Supervised lunch and recess, at no additional cost, if registered for morning and afternoon classes within the same week. Camp College also offers eight full-day one-week courses including: Sea Camp: Marine Biology and Shore Ecology (ages 10-15), Ecoventure (ages 10- 16), Adventure Camp (ages 11-15), Fishing Camp (ages 10-14), Junior Golf (ages 9-14), and Rock Climbing (ages 9-14), Build Your Own Guitar (ages 11-16), and more. BEFORE-Camp Care If you would like your child to par-

ticipate in an extended day program, enroll your youngster in MCCC’s “Early Bird BEFORECAMP,” which begins at 7:15 a.m. Campers will participate in supervised activities on campus and camp staff will ensure your child’s safety by promptly checking them into their regularly scheduled programs. AFTER-Camp Care If you would like your child to remain on campus for additional activities following their regular camp

day, you can enroll your child in MCCC’s “AFTER-CAMP” program. Children enrolled in this program are escorted to a variety of supervised activities from 4 to 6 p.m., including a recreational swim period from 4 to 5:15 p.m., during the weeks and days listed. fault — his parents enabled the behavior. Eight to 18 year olds consume an average of more than seven hours of screen media per day, often while multi-tasking, a statistic that has increased 2.5 hours in the past 10 years. Their excessive screen time is linked to emotional and behavior problems and difficulty with peers and school. “I Just Want my Kids to be Happy” A multi-year study of 50,000 high schoolers led by noted author/researcher Jean Twenge showed unequivocally that the happiest kids use screens less than an hour per day, and that teens who spend Open to: Girls and Boys 7th-12th grade

more time in face-to-face, in-person interactions with friends are happiest. It turns out there is an inverse relationship between happiness and time spent on screens for our children. So how and where can we distract kids from their screens while giving them the best opportunity to grow into good people and contributing members of society? Two words: *SUMMER CAMP* Traditional, outdoor, hot, sweaty, buggy, muddy, Summer Camp. Because, simply put, Camp is the antidote to the traps of modern society: face-to-face interactions, collaborating in groups, and navigating the ups and downs of relationships. It’s

Y

For thousands of years we made friends organically, until about 15 years ago, when we began meeting people through MySpace, Facebook, Instagram, and video game headsets. While we used to play outside after school, and on the weekends — now most neighborhoods look like outdoor ghost towns. Where are the children? Oh, we know where most of them are… staring at their glowing screens. Don’t get me wrong, I love IMDB and YouTube, but experts agree that as a human race, we are quickly losing our social/relationship skills, simply because we aren’t using them with much frequency anymore. NOT THEIR FAULT, OURS I was at an NFL tailgate party recently, one of the last bastions of old-school socializing, watching a 10-year-old boy mercilessly begging his parents for his iPad, and then proceed to sit in the car for an hour playing games on it. Not his

also a place where kind, caring people other than parents teach life skills like making friendships, integrity, self-regulation, and independence. At my Camp it’s simple: Electronics are strictly forbidden. While at first the kids (and staff) may complain, in the end they literally thank us. THE GOOD NEWS In the 25 years that I’ve been running summer camps, I am seeing the pendulum swinging back to a sense of normalcy with today’s parents. The new generation is also more concerned about gaining new experiences and being good people — two things that good Camps specialize in. Look at the stats, look at your kids! Summer Camp is more important now than ever before, filling the societal gap left by institutionalized schools, busy parents and glowing screens! Bordentown CDA Summer Fun for All CDA Summer Program offers a variety of camps and programs that will satisfy the visual and performing artist, the athlete, the adventurer, the leader to be, and the technology enthusiast. CDA Programs are custom designed specific to grade or age, reasonably priced, and offer the convenience and service that parents need. What makes us the perfect fit for your family? It is the perfect combination of certified staff who are invested in your children, safe indoor and outdoor facilities, and programs that infuse skills to help strengthen our students in today’s world. Our camps help develop students by incorporating themes such as stress management, team-building, diversity, volunteerism, empathy, self-acceptance, goal setting, leadership, social media safety, and problem solving. Recreational, educational, and cultural learning activities provide enriching and positive summer experiences for children in grades K-4 in the CDA 4 Week Day Camp. The Pre-Teen Camp (PTC) is for incoming and exiting sixth graders and specifically targets the interests and

developmental needs of our older campers. Students may attend four weeks of PTC or pair a few weeks with one of our accelerated programs for older students. We are excited to expand our camp to new programs this summer such as Wrestling Camp for grades K-6 and Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Michael Montalto, Bordentown Regional High School Band Director. We are bringing back our SAT Prep Course for high school students who have busy schedules during the school year. Ignite Your Spark! presented by Camp Fire NJ, is a unique program

that offers the opportunity to serve our community and provide a rich, nurturing environment for our youth to THRIVE. We are also collaborating for a second year with Cream Ridge Golf Course to offer a weeklong Golf Camp. CDA’s Jr. Musical Theatre Company summer production is Seussical Junior. Summer Theatre presents a unique opportunity for budding young thespians (ages 8-13) to hone and exhibit their craft. Our Summer Stock Musical Theater production is a highly detailed and instructional experience for our high school actors — ages 14 to 19. This summer’s pro-

duction is “Mamma Mia!” The legendary retired PMES Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Pesce, continues to lead the extremely popular Kindergarten Ready Program. Children entering Kindergarten this fall are introduced to a wide variety of readiness activities that prepare them for the kindergarten environment and the next stage of their educational life. This program raises the instructional bar for our “soon to be” full day kindergarteners. Our summer programs appeal to the interests of all students. There are numerous sports camps for the athlete, art and music camps for those with a creative spirit, technology camps for students who love to problem solve, and adventure camps for kids who love to explore and discover. Most recreation programs and camps are supported by a Before Care and/or After-Care component that provides extended childcare from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Be sure to check out our website to see all of our programs and for online registration information at cda.asapconnected.com Bordentown CDA Summer Camp 48 Dunns Mill Road, Bordentown 08505. 609-298-0025 x1200

Lunch is also included in the tuition. Rambling Pines is all about service.

Thirty-seven years ago Sandy Popko and her sister Carol Besler started Little Friends School on the property of 221 Edinburg Road, Hamilton. Sandy was a 25-year-old with a passion for education. The school started with Sandy as the owner, director and teacher. Today Little Friends School continues to thrive with Sandy operating the school along with her partner, Debbie Monahan, who took over for her sister 16 years ago. Little Friends School offers classes for children aged 18 months through kindergarten. They have a Toddler 1 class, for children 18 months to 30 months old, a 2 1/2 to 3-year-old class, as well as full and half-day classes for three and four year olds, plus a kindergarten class. Little Friends School is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Little Friends also offers a unique summer camp experience for ages 18 months to 10 years, divided into three groups: toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary age. Both full days and half days are available

Rambling Pines Day Camp has created a fun, exciting, and nurturing environment for children between the ages of 3 and 15. The camp has four beautiful heated swimming pools, air-conditioned interior spaces, and activities to suit every child’s likes and abilities. Rambling Pines’ mature, experienced staff provides instruction in swimming, arts and crafts, computers, dancing, drama, fishing, gymnastics, golf, music, mountain boarding, nature study, soccer, softball, tennis, street hockey, mountain biking, basketball, volleyball, boating, ceramics, and more. Club and elective activities let campers

get more of what they like. Horseback riding is also available. The camp is run over eight weeks, from June 24 to August 16. Parents can pick and choose which weeks work best for them. To make transportation easier, Rambling Pines requests a minimum of two consecutive weeks. Visit the website at www.ramblingpines.com for more details. and include a variety of activities including special events and trips based on weekly themes. Little Friends School is a licensed facility that meets all state guidelines. All classes, including before care, after care, summer camp and holiday care are taught by qualified teachers. Sandy says, “We foster a strong relationship with our families. The teachers are here for the children. They are kept safe, happy, and have fun while learning so the parents can rest assured their children are well taken care of while they are at work.” Teachers work different shifts to ensure at least on of them is with their students at all points throughout the day. They do not rely on part-time staff to fill in for before and after care. Sandy continues: “The teachers here are really good. We’ve had children come here because our teachers have been here many years. Many times we get the children of former students.” Their fully day four-year-old teacher, Bonnie Gunzelman, retired in June, 2015, after teaching 31 years. She continues to visit the school and works as a substitute teacher. Debbie said “she has had kids grow up and come back with their children. They tell their children, ‘I had Miss Bonnie.’ She looks at them and says, ‘Oh, you are back, all grown up!’” Other teachers have also been there for many years. Jan Fasiska, the kindergarten teacher, is continuing to teach after 31 years at Little Friends School. Miss Rosemarie Bonacchi has been there 18 years, as well as Jay Padmanabjan, who has been at Little Friends School 14 years. The curriculum at Little Friends School is “geared toward fostering skills needed for success in school. We strive to instill a love of learning in each child and celebrate their success along the way. Daily activities are designed to encourage and challenge each child’s natural curiosity and instill skills that prepare children for later school success. We respect each child’s individuality and strive to provide a curriculum that addresses the special interests of each child to achieve their full potential,” explains Sandy. The curriculum is theme-based. Each month the theme changes, although pre-reading, math, science, language, and gross motor skills are built into each theme and remain constant throughout the year. Little Friends School is the “best kept secret in Hamilton.” There are two buildings on the property with the main building not quite visible from the road. The front building houses for four-year-old and kinder-

dergarten in Hamilton is October 1. Enrollment is open all year, as long as there is availability. They enroll between 10 and 12 students in the kindergarten class. The kindergarten class meets the state requirements for public school kindergarten. In addition to teachers, parents also play an important role in their children’s education. “We work to foster strong relationships with the families enrolled in our program. We believe that teachers and parents should be partners in the education process,” continues Sandy. After all, parents know their child best. Little Friends School

Team85 Fitness & Wellness, Bordentown For Healthy Families Step up to the plate. Shoot a few hoops. Kick a soccer ball. Make a splash in a super swimming pool. Lead a cheer. Kick up your heels in a dance class, create a painting or complete a crafts project. Those are just a few of the activities offered at Team85’s Summer Camp in Bordentown. Located in the spacious, state-of-the-art Team85 Fitness & Wellness center, the summer camp welcomes girls and boys (ages 4-13) to an array of fun activities supervised by professional trainers and instructors. Camp is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and parents have the option of early drop-off and late pick up as Team85 offers fee child care to members. “A happy camper is an active camper,” says Camp Director, Amanda Douglass. “We offer a safe and fun environment with the core values of physical fitness and an emphasis on wellness, as well as cultivating good eating and exercise habits,” she affirms. Campers develop emotional intelligence, team-

work abilities, health appreciation, leadership skills, and athletic ability, all while making new friends. More fun activities include field trips to local sports arenas and attractions. Sports activities are held in the spacious, climate controlled Field House which includes two full size basketball courts, 80 yard turf field, as well as facilities for several different sports specific camps, including football, baseball, soccer, and basketball. The aquatic center with its 25 yard pool sets the scene for professional swimming instruction and water games. All swim instructors are WSI certified and all lifeguards are CPR/AED certified. You can make waves at a pool party, play water games, and celebrate special occasions. And speaking of parties, campers can celebrate their birthdays any time of year with a party at Team85. Team85 campers can opt for Team85’s special sports performance program for an additional fee. Designed to raise campers’ skills in a specific sport to the next level, this program focuses on speed, agility and strength. Team85 offers set menus from which campers can purchase healthy lunches. Free snacks are provided in the morning and afternoon.

During the school year, camp services are offered on school holidays where kids can get involved in a day of activities that will keep them engaged and active. “Team85 Fitness & Wellness is an independent service provider that is a one-stop shop for every individual and family that comes to us,” says Amanda Douglass. “Because we are independent, and not a franchise, we have many more options in creating services that our members both need and enjoy that are not typical of most fitness centers. For example, there is a luxurious salon and spa on site that offers an array of luxury spa services and hair styling.” Says Amanda Douglass, “We are family friendly and family focused, helping every member to be their healthiest and at their best.”

Ewing Recreation Department Day & Teen Travel Camp With snow on the ground and the cold weather, now is the ideal time to make your children’s summer camp plans. The Ewing Recreation Department offers programs for students entering kindergarten through 9th grade, plus counselor in training programs for 9th and 10th graders. Camps run from June 24 through August 30. Registration is open at communitypass.net, click on LOGIN, and enter Ewing to set up an account. Register by April 2 and save 5 percent. Programs are open to residents and non-residents of Ewing. The Ewing Recreation Department is extremely flexible as far as which weeks students attend, if they attend full or partial weeks, or even only attend half days. With all camp activities taking place at the Ewing Senior & Community Center (the former JCC) at 999 Lower Ferry Road, with the exception of field trips, camp programs happen every week public schools are not in session, including that last week before school starts. With indoor and outdoor facilities on site weather is not a problem!

The camp has a full-time nurse and Red Cross certified life guards. All counselors are trained and certified in first aid. Financial assistance is available. Camp is divided into two sections based on age. Day Camp is for children entering kindergarten through 5th grade. Campers will attend camp on site four days a week and travel off-site every Thursday. Their camp days include swimming twice a day (lessons in the mornings and free swim in the afternoons), arts and crafts, nature, cooking, special events, theme days, athletics, and dance and drama. Campers have the option of bringing lunch or purchasing lunch from the snack bar. From July 1 to August 16, children entering 6th to 9th grades participate in Teen Travel. In this popular program they travel four days a week and have the run of the camp on Thursdays while the elementary school students travel. Each day offers a new experience. Teens may participate in regular day camp the other weeks. Once a week they have a beach or water day. Trips will include favorites like Belmar, Pt. Pleasant, Jenkinson’s, Dorney Park, Mohawk Lake and other fun filled trips. TheJuly Counselor in Training 15th – 19thpro9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. gram is open to Ewing residents en-

tering 9th and 10th grades. These junior counselors work with the younger campers and rotate age groups. CITs also have group meetings led by senior staff to discuss their experiences and grow as individuals and as a group. Camp hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Early hours (from 7:30 a.m.) and late hours (to 6 p.m.) are available for an additional fee. Registration and fees are due by June 4 for the first five weeks (through July 27), by July 2 for weeks 6 through 8, and by August 6 for Post Camp weeks. A recent Washington Post report cites that average youth (ages 8 to 12) spend 42 hours per week consuming electronic media; for teens it is 63 hours per week. Far better than simply saying no to electronic usage, is to look for techfree alternatives that include the following: 1. Physical activity 2. Face-to-face social connections 3. Bob Smith Soccer Academy Learn from the Best Bobby Smith, member of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame, nineyear NASL player, and seven-year U.S. National Team member, along with his staff, are proudly holding the 13th year of indoor, air conditioned soccer camps at the beautiful Robbinsville Fieldhouse. With four weeks of soccer camp, offering full day and half day camps to boys and girls ages 5 to 4, Bob and his staff will be helping improve their ball skills and playing ability, while making new friends. Our staff consists of the area’s

top soccer coaches and ex and present professional players, dedicated to improving the soccer ability and knowledge of the game to players of all levels. The camp is directed by Darron Brown, an exceptional player in college, professional trainer, high school teacher, and dad himself. Our staff offer insight and knowledge to the game that only players can share. Our camp dates are Monday-Friday, the weeks of July 15-19, July 29-August 2, August 12-16, and August 19-23 We offer half day or full day camp. Half day camp is from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and full day camp is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We offer FREE before and after care from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A pizza and

Gatorade lunch is also FREE to all campers as well as a Camp T-shirt. Our schedule is as follows: 9 to 11 a.m. is ball skill development, followed by morning games from 11 a.m. to noon. Lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. The afternoon program focuses on ball striking, goal scoring, and our World Cup Tournament every day. With the addition of air conditioning we have eliminated any sunburn issues, extreme heat, or rain concerns, which allows us to work so much harder on player development. Finally, we have a second season of our successful All Sports Camp for the players who want to play other sports as well as soccer.

This camp is the week of August 26-30 and is directed by Karen DeRossett, a local PE teacher and very successful soccer player at TCNJ. Games will include European team handball, dodgeball, soccer, flag football, whiffle ball, tag, ultimate frisbee, and everyone’s favorite, Capture the Flag. We hope you’ll join us at one or more of our very popular summer camps. Bob Smith Soccer Academy
