Princeton Medical Institute Help Us in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease is really the plague of our modern century. With the aging of the baby boomer generation, incidences of the disease are expected to double in America by the year 2050. Princeton Medical Institute was the first and only site in New Jersey chosen to be part of the Global Alzheimer Platform. The goal of the GAP is to get a drug approved by 2025. PMI is working to help find a way to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The best way to do that is through the advances of science, and clinical trials are the only way to get medications approved. The Global Alzheimer’s Platform promotes advancing Alzheimer’s disease medications and awareness from the laboratory all the way through clinical research trials. PMI also conducts trials for depression, schizophrenia, episodic cluster headaches, and fatty livers. Major contributing factors to Alzheimer’s disease are amyloids that build up in the brain and destroy connections between nerve cells. This is the only aspect of the disease that current drug treatments target. Princeton Medical Institute is conducting trials of two new medications that target other causes. Research has shown that there may be an association between gingivitis and Alzheimer’s disease. We’re now moving beyond amyloids and are

Dr. Jeffrey Apter pleased to announce two unique studies for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. We are working with Cortexyme, which has a new medication targeting gingivitis as the cause of the disease. The other very exciting program we’re working with is with Oryzon Pharmaceuticals. This offers an epigenetic approach, which is also differ-

ent. It’s a membrane stabilizer that causes stabilization of the disease. Participants in these studies will see a board certified doctor on a regular basis, get full blood work, physical exams, and EKG, CAT, MRI, and PET scans. All treatment is free and insurance is not needed. Transportation can be provided by Lyft. Stipends will be paid for your time and travel. The trials last about a year, and they will follow up with patients afterwards. They also stay in contact with the patient’s regular doctor. All test results can be provided to their regular doctor. Patients don’t already have a diagnosis to participate in these studies. Free testing is provided for those who are concerned that they may be developing the disease. If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one, and your memory is not functioning as well as it used to — for example you are having difficulty remembering things or performing tasks you used to perform easily — this is an indication that you should come in for testing. Participation in these trials is crucial in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. We need your help. MINDful WELLness Achieve Your Diet and Fitness Goals MINDful WELLness, located in Hamilton, is the furthest thing from an average gym. Its peaceful group environment provides a fun and educational fitness experience. Certified group fitness instructor, nutritionist, and life coach Noelmarie Rossi and Brad Sabo welcome clients of all ages to try a program personally tailored to them. “It’s for people who never worked out a day in their lives and for people who work out every day,” says Rossi. MINDful WELLness takes a client’s goal and helps them achieve it by working with the mind and the body. Rossi says “I believe if you don’t change the mind, the body is not going to change.” Their program is based on their five pillars of wellness: Focus, Fuel, Fitness, Forward, and Future. With Focus, Rossi helps clients discover why they might be having a hard time achieving their goals such as losing weight. Clients learn to realize their daily habits and beliefs that might be preventing them from reaching their ideal selves.

“The Fuel portion of our program is personalized nutrition counseling and coaching,” Rossi says. “It’s about teaching our clients what their bodies nee, instead of restricting calories and fighting the yo-yo effect that comes with not fueling enough.” With Fitness, clients participate in small group exercise classes based on dynamic functional movement that targets the entire body head to toe. Workouts are based on the three natural planes the body moves on to help prevent injury. “You don’t have to compete with the person next to you,” Rossi says. Each exercise has different options and levels. On Saturdays, Rossi runs recovery classes that involve yoga and meditation. The Forward part of the program is about giving back, where members will be able to participate in charity events every eight weeks. “Brad and I want nothing more than to give back to the community. It’s a vital part of our program and a main reason why we opened MINDful in the first place.” With Future, Rossi encourages her clients to go out and teach others the healthy habits they learn at MINDful WELLness. “The idea behind Future is by teaching one individual, they will then pass their

knowledge on to friends, family or coworkers, and before you know it, the one person whose life you changed, could very well change many more!” says Rossi. A client’s program is designed after they complete a member assessment and medical questionnaire to discover their goals. The program also uses an InBody machine that measures weight, water, and muscleto-fat ratio in every part of the body to discover how much fuel someone needs. Rossi and Sabo opened MINDful WELLness so that people can have a place to learn about what works for their body. Every client has Rossi as their trainer, life coach, and nutritionist. “It’s really a family environment that goes way beyond the four walls of the gym,” Rossi says. Classes are available on Monday, Wednesday,

Noelmarie Rossi and Brad Sabo and Friday with recovery classes on Saturday. MINDful WELLness, 1800 Route 33, Forest Glen Shopping Center, Hamilton. www.mindfulwellness.fit or 609-890-8888. See ad, page 6.

AllCure Spine & Sports Medicine Tackling Pain with the Newest Technology, Treatments, and a Mission to Educate Patients “From your toes to your nose, we can help.” “What you don’t know can hurt you,” affirms Dr. Anthony Alfieri of AllCure Spine and Sports Medicine, an expanding pain management practice with offices in Monroe and Hamilton. “Too many people are in pain and unhappy with their quality of life. Yet they are unaware of new possibilities of treatment that can significantly reduce or eliminate severe, chronic pain.” Dr. Alfieri and his colleagues at AllCure’s offices are on a mission to raise public awareness of the causes of pain and the growing range of non-surgical therapies available to treat them. His multidisciplinary approach spans pain management, laser therapy, physical therapy, chiropractic, and acupuncture. Within these categories are numerous non-invasive solutions that address every part of the body and are administered by a professional

team of medical doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and physical therapists. This expert team collaborates to find the most effective treatments to provide long-lasting relief from pain. “By listening carefully to our patients describe their symptoms and medical history, we can create a treatment program that combines various therapies to optimum effect,” says Dr. Alfieri. “Many patients have endured pain for years, thinking that heavy medication and possible surgery were the only avenues open to them.” But new treatments are emerging. The practice has invested in a new FDA-approved laser machine that has proved effective in treating back and neck pain and plantar fasciitis, conditions that are becoming more common with an aging population, intensive computer use, and rising obesity. With two highly trained acupuncturists on staff, this ancient therapy is now used to treat a vast range of conditions. Acupuncture can alleviate joint and back pain and migraines but has uses for conditions that may not be actually painful but cause discomfort, impact function and quality of life, and can lead to other problems. These include allergies, anxiety, depression, and

difficulties in quitting smoking. Pregnant women can get relief from side effects such as morning sickness, swollen ankles, and back pain. Acupuncture also helps treat infertility, menopause, and menstrual cramps. Unfortunately, Medicare and some other insurance plans do not cover acupuncture. “We make every effort to provide affordable acupuncture treatments,” says Dr. Alfieri. A large percentage of the practice includes patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy, usually manifested by stabbing pain and/or numbness in the hands and feet. This has many causes, from diabetes to infection or a traumatic injury. “There is no cure for this, but there are treatments that can significantly reduce pain, including laser treatments,” says Dr. Alfieri. Cannabidiol (CBD) oil has shown promise as a pain reliever without the dangers of addiction posed by

Anthony Alfieri, DC, left, and Victor Alfieri, DPT. opioids. AllCure uses a pure form of Cannabidiol (CBD) oil that has proved effective. “We want our patients to know that today, they have options,” Dr. Alfieri asserts. “A total cessation of pain may not be possible, but we can often bring pain levels down to a point where the patient’s mobility and quality of life is vastly improved.” AllCure Spine & Sports Medicine, 140 Cabot Drive, Suite A, Hamilton. 609-528-4417. www.allcurespineandsports.com. Trenton Farmers Market Farm Fresh Food with a Rich History In the early 1900s a group of farmers came by horse and carriage to Trenton to sell their produce along the Delaware River. In 1939, when the City of Trenton gave notice that Route 29 would be built, the participating farmers formed the Trenton Market Growers Cooperative Association and property was purchased on Spruce Street in Lawrence. The original two market buildings were moved and the Trenton Farmers Market opened in 1948 on Spruce Street. More than 100 farms filled what had become three buildings with fresh truck loads of corn, tomatoes, melons, and whatever was in season along with one building devoted to livestock and poultry. After one building burned down, the two remaining buildings were reconfigured, creating the crossshape that stands today. Over the years farm stalls were replaced with bakers, butchers, and cheesemongers. Kitchens were built, heat was added, garage doors and the iconic roof signs denoting, “FARMERS

MARKET” were updated, but the integrity of the original farms remained. Additions to the market over time included jewelry, apparel, and flea market finds, which makes for a fun shopping experience. Pulaski Meats is well known for its Polish meats, cold cuts, and delicacies including pierogi, golabki (stuffed cabbage), and chrusciki (fried pastry topped with powdered sugar); Pie’d Piper offers freshly baked pies, cakes, and cookies, along with a wide assortment of pierogi (look for pork roll pierogi), salads and heat-and-eat favorites including Mama’s Meatballs. Eateries include two vegan cafes: Lady & the Shallot and Savory Leaf Cafe; Hambone Opera BBQ; King’s Food

(Amish roasted, rotisserie and fried chicken and meats); King’s Grille, offering sandwiches on freshly baked Amish breads. Cartlidge’s Quality Meats, an Amish butcher greets shoppers as they enter through the Spruce Street entrance Find fresh fish at the Crab Shack, located in an adjoining building as well as Win, Place & Smoke for lottery tickets and smokeless tobacco. Opening soon is Terra Momo Bread Co. known in the Princeton area for their French pastries and breads, and Tea-For-All, tea shop and cafe. New Jersey’s rich agricultural history is proudly highlighted with the six farmer-owners ranging as far south as Hammonton and as far north as Princeton. Look for Cedar-

ville Farms (two locations within the Market), Corner-Copia Farms, Cranberry Hall Farm, Pineland Farms, Russo’s Fruit & Vegetable Farm, and Terhune Orchards. The market came under new management this past January after the retirement of the long time co-managers, Marcia and Jack Ball. Chris Cirkus, who also manages the West Windsor Community Farmers Market, has been busy reinvigorating this oldest continuously running year-round market. Cirkus says, “The Trenton Farmers Market is a gift to this area, so worthy of preserving and revitalizing; I’m loving getting to know all of the farmers, vendors, merchants, and especially the shoppers to hear stories of the market’s vibrant history!” The name Trenton Farmers Market proudly remains even though the market is actually in Lawrence Township. Visit the Trenton Farmers Market on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Market will be open on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. thetrentonfarmersmarket.com Facebook: facebook.com/thetrentonfarmersmarket Instagram: instagram.com/thetrentonfarmersmarket See ad, page 13.

Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell Hospital Earns Third Consecutive National Award for Quality Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for the third consecutive time. The designation recognizes the hospital’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care. “Capital Health Medical Center Hopewell is home to services like our Cancer Center, Center for Digestive Health, Orthopaedics, and Pediatric Services to name a few. Earning an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group for the third time in a row re-

assures the residents in our community that we continue to be a leader in health care for the region,” said Al Maghazehe, president and CEO, Capital Health. “As an organization, Capital Health is committed to improving quality and safety outcomes, and this recognition validates our efforts,” said Dr. Louis D’Amelio, vice president of Clinical Performance at Capital Health. “Our dedication to patient safety is supported by ongoing initiatives that ensure we continue to make sustained improve-

ments and meet nationally recognized standards of care.” Developed under the guidance of a Blue Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. “To be recognized nationally as an ‘A’ hospital is an accomplish-

ment the whole community should take pride in,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ grade are making it a priority to protect patients from preventable medical harm and error. We congratulate hospital leaders, board members, staff, volunteers and clinicians who work so hard to earn this A.” To see Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell’s full grade details, and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit hospitalsafetygrade.org A four-time Magnet-designated health system for nursing excellence, Capital Health is the Central New Jersey/Lower Bucks County region’s leader in providing progressive, quality patient care with significant investments in physicians, nurses and staff, as well as advanced technology. Paragon Sport Spine & Wellness Don’t Live with Pain Few things are worse than living with lingering pain. It seems the only alternatives for treatment are prescription drugs, invasive procedures or wishing it goes away. But now there is another resource. Paragon Sport Spine & Wellness’ newly constructed office at 17 Main Street, Suite 403, in nearby Robbinsville, offers conservative, noninvasive, and non-drug based comprehensive rehabilitative services. Specialists in physical therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic work holistically to achieve pain-free living and wellness. “We offer a different approach to musculoskeletal pain problems,” says co-founder Dr. Jim Tholany PT, DPT, OCS. “Our highly trained clinicians work together with their respective specialty to help patients achieve faster results without the need for surgery, pain medication, or injections” Dr. Tholany is one of New Jersey’s top physical therapists specializing in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation. Receiving his undergraduate and clinical doctorate degree in

physical therapy from Seton Hall University, he also earned his orthopedic clinical speciality, a board certification held by fewer than 10 percent of practicing therapists. Equipped with the latest equipment and technology in rehabilitation and recovery in their state-ofthe-art facility, Paragon stays at the forefront of advancements to bring you the best in clinical care. “We expect to raise the standard of care you may have experienced in the past and exceed your expectations each visit,” states Dr. Tholany. Of special note, Paragon Sport Spine and Wellness offers highly specialized treatment of pelvic floor and pelvic health-related ailments in their private exam suite. Dr. Aisling Linehan, co-founder, is a graduate of Duquesne University and developed an affinity to help this underserved population after seeing its life-changing benefit. It’s natural to ignore the pelvic floor when it is functioning well. However, like any part of the body, failure or weakness spells trouble. Vital to the health of both men and women, the pelvic floor muscles are responsible for holding up internal organs against gravity and maintaining control of bodily functions. Common conditions treated include incontinence, painful inter-

Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute Taking the Fight Against Chronic Pain to New Levels Botox for migraines. Stem cell injections to regenerate tissue and organs. Gummy Bears infused with THC. Platelet-Rich Plasma to treat conditions from sports injuries and wounds to hair loss from chemotherapy. These are just a few of the cutting-edge therapies used by Dr. Ronak Patel, the founder and medical director of Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute in Plainsboro. “Many of these treatments may come as a surprise to patients suffering from chronic pain, especially those who think that their pain — and poor quality of life — is something they have to endure,” Dr. Patel notes. A double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, Dr. Patel focuses on treating pain in the back, neck, face, and joints as well as pain related to cancer and chemotherapy. With so many different paincausing illnesses, injuries, and conare keenly aware that most people feel sick, in pain, and are worried about what the future will hold if their symptoms continue. One of the things we always try to remind patients is that we are not a big hospital system. If you need help, our team is here for you. One of our physicians is on-call 24/7 if you need us,” says Dr. Neha Patel, a physician-partner at ARBDA who sees patients in Hamilton, Wall, and Moorestown. More Than Just Arthritis: Rheumatologists are considered the medical specialists who focus on the health of both your bones and joints. Most people correctly associate rheumatologists with arthritis, a debilitating and often chronic condition involving swollen and painful joints. That said, “arthritis” can have many causes. For example, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are actually diseases where the body’s immune system is not working correctly. This is in contrast to osteoarthritis, which is more of the “wear and tear” type and is frequently related to aging. “As we age it is extremely common to experience some degree of increased joint pain or discomfort,” says Dr. Amy Evangelisto, an ARBDA physician and director of the ARBDA Ultrasound Program, “but,

ditions, treatments must be carefully customized to fit the needs of each individual patient. Dr. Patel partners with orthopedists, physical and occupational therapists, and chiropractors to provide a variety of approaches and treatments. With 27 different therapies available to patients, Dr. Patel offers a range of treatments, often combined to attack highly specific causes of pain. Among the most promising and innovative treatments: Regenerative Medicine/ Stem Cell Therapy. Regenerative medicine is a fast-growing, highly developed treatment that helps the body heal or rebuild itself. Dr. Patel uses stem cell therapy to treat ailments, particularly low back or neck pain, caused by degenerative vertebral discs or joint pain in the shoulders, hips, or knees caused by osteoarthritis. The patient’s stem cells are removed, purified, concentrated, and injected into the injured or weakened tissue. Stem cell therapy can also speed recovery and help avoid surgery. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). A favorite treatment for sports injuries, PRP uses the patient’s blood

sometimes, it can be hard to know what the root cause of this pain is without seeking help from a physician who specializes in exactly these types of situations. This is where your rheumatologist fits in as part of your healthcare team.” Rheumatologists also diagnose and treat many other conditions that involve both the musculoskeletal and immune systems including carpal tunnel syndrome, lupus, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, and polymyalgia rheumatica (among others). Osteoporosis is another area of specialization at ARBDA. Weak bones can contribute to severe fractures from falls and can be a major source of disability as we age. The ARBDA team can help assess your risk for osteoporosis and provide early medical intervention that reduces the chance of osteoporosis-related fractures occurring.

to produce a platelet-rich plasma that targets a host of chronic and acute pain conditions, including muscle strain, arthritis, tendinosis, cartilage injuries, joint inflammation, and wound care. The treatment is also used in orthopedic and plastic surgery. By synthesizing platelets and releasing proteins, PRP can aid in generating new tissue. And it has helped chemotherapy patients grow back hair faster and thicker. Cannabis Therapy. The legalization of medical marijuana has brought new treatment options. “We are very excited by the potential of cannabis-based treatments and we comply fully with New Jersey’s evolving regulations,” says Dr. Patel. He uses a local dispensary to provide treatments, which include edibles such as gummy bears and cannabis-based rubbing and vaping oils. Minimally Invasive Therapy. Dr. Patel offers a wide variety of minimally invasive therapies. These include epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, and spinal cord stimulation for patients suffering from

chronic neck and back pain stemming from herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis. His goal is to help his patients avoid surgery and at the same time regain functionality. Thanks to these and other gamechanging treatments, pain levels can be greatly reduced or eliminated and quality of life enhanced. Says Dr. Patel, “Stop your pain. Start your life.” Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute, 666 Plainsboro Road, Suite 100D, Plainsboro. 609-2694451. www.njpaindoc.com. See ad on back cover.

Academic Compassion: The 16 physicians at ARBDA — all rheumatologists — are extremely passionate about their field. Dr. Janet Krommes believes there are very tangible benefits to being part of a single-specialty practice: “One of the best things about our roster of physician-scientists is our ongoing academic discourse. We don’t even think twice about comparing notes, discussing the merits of different treatment modalities, and often work collaboratively to manage complex cases.” The practice is also extremely proud of its new IDYLLIC Infusion Centers. Many of the newest treatments are actually infused (i.e., given via IV), which used to require a trip to the nearest hospital. The team at ARBDA provides these state-of-the-art medications in every one of their offices so that patients have a level of convenience

and flexibility that is simply not possible in a hospital setting. For everyone who works at ARBDA, a sense of fulfillment comes when a patient arrives for a return visit feeling better and fully capable of doing everything that he or she loves, whether it’s returning to work, playing with their children (or grandchildren), or spending time in the garden. “A lot of people don’t know that rheumatologic disease can have a bigger impact on quality of life than heart disease or even cancer,” says Dr. Janet Krommes. “When my patients can get back to doing what they love in life … Well, that’s why I became a doctor in the first place.” Our new Hamilton office, located at 3635 Quakerbridge Road, Suite 33, in Hamilton is proudly served by: Janet Krommes, M.D., Neha Patel, M.D., and Nadi Dissanayaka, D.O. Arthritis, Rheumatic & Back Disease Associates has offices in Hamilton, Voorhees, Moorestown, Galloway, Wall, and Washington Township. If you have questions about joint pain or would like to discuss what options may be available to you please call us at 856-4245005 or visit our website at www.ArthritisSJ.com. See ad, page 19.

Princeton Spine Do You Have Tech or Text Neck? Tech neck, text neck: No matter what you call it, we all should be aware by now that these indispensable products in our hands come at a cost. Many costs, really. Costs to relationships, emotional well being, perhaps society — but this article is about necks. People are getting better in general about being aware of their posture while lifting heavy objects. We appreciate that standing up straight is a good thing. But take out a smart phone or device and any concept of posture with the neck and head typically goes out the window. Consider the following: The human head weighs about a dozen pounds. Carrying 12 pounds over your head is hard enough, but as your neck bends forward, the weight on the cervical spine increases. At a 15-degree angle, this weight is about 27 pounds, at 30 degrees it’s 40 pounds, at 45 degrees it’s 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees it’s 60 pounds. Yikes! That’s a lot of weight and stress going through your neck. Here are four simple ways to minimize the stress of using your smart phone on your neck:

First, try to not bend your neck to look down. Just shift your gaze downwards without actually bending your neck. Or at least bend your neck less. As you can see above, the more you bend your neck the more stress you put on it. Second, use a hands-free device so if you’re on the phone you can be looking straight ahead instead of holding the phone between your shoulder and head. Third, if you are looking at your phone or device, take breaks! That’s right, remind yourself to look up, look around, stretch your neck and shoulders, and then continue with your device if needed. And fourth and finally, take good care of your neck the rest of the

day. Have good workplace and home ergonomics and stretch and strengthen the muscles around your neck so they are more ready for the stress of your daily life. And get a healthy amount of safe exercise, which tends to help just about everything. Fortunately, when necks do become painful, there are a myriad of options to take the pain away. Nonsurgical spine specialists have developed an arsenal of capabilities over the years, backed by science and rigorous studies to help take away the pain. These approaches range from massage, manual medicine, and physical therapy to soft tissue injections, nerve blocks, image-guided joint injections, and a

Team85 Fitness & Wellness, Bordentown For Healthy Families Step up to the plate. Shoot a few hoops. Kick a soccer ball. Make a splash in a super swimming pool. Lead a cheer. Kick up your heels in a dance class, create a painting or complete a crafts project. Those are just a few of the activities offered at Team85’s Summer Camp in Bordentown. Located in the spacious, state-of-the-art Team85 Fitness & Wellness center, the summer camp welcomes girls and boys (ages 4-13) to an array of fun activities supervised by professional trainers and instructors. Camp is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and parents have the option of early drop-off and late pick up as Team85 offers fee child care to members. “A happy camper is an active camper,” says Camp Director, Amanda Douglass. “We offer a safe and fun environment with the core values of physical fitness and an emphasis on wellness, as well as cultivating good eating and exercise habits,” she affirms. Campers develop emotional intelligence,

teamwork abilities, health appreciation, leadership skills, and athletic ability, all while making new friends. More fun activities include field trips to local sports arenas and attractions. Sports activities are held in the spacious, climate controlled Field House which includes two full size basketball courts, 80 yard turf field, as well as facilities for several different sports specific camps, including football, baseball, soccer, and basketball. The aquatic center

with its 25 yard pool sets the scene for professional swimming instruction and water games. All swim instructors are WSI certified and all lifeguards are CPR/AED certified. You can make waves at a pool party, play water games, and celebrate special occasions. And speaking of parties, campers can celebrate their birthdays any time of year with a party at Team85. Team85 campers can opt for Team85’s special sports performance program for an additional

procedure called radiofrequency rhizotomy that stops the pain signals from parts of your neck from reaching your brain. It’s comforting to know that there are safe, viable treatment options if neck pain should become a problem. However, as we all know, an ounce of prevention is worth well over a pound of cure. And once a neck is “cured” of neck pain, it’s still just as important — if not more so — to develop healthy neck hygiene including good neck posture while using devices in order to prevent the neck pain from recurring in the future. And remember, even with perfect posture while using your devices, don’t forget to lift your gaze from time to time from your screen to enjoy the actual living, breathing world around you. You may find it refreshingly interesting and invigorating. If you have neck or other pain and want to be pain-free without surgery or dangerous medications, the doctors at Princeton Spine and Joint Center would be happy to help. Designed to raise campers’ skills in a specific sport to the next level, this program focuses on speed, agility and strength. Team85 offers set menus from which campers can purchase healthy lunches. Free snacks are provided in the morning and afternoon. During the school year, camp services are offered on school holidays where kids can get involved in a day of activities that will keep them engaged and active. “Team85 Fitness & Wellness is an independent service provider that is a one-stop shop for every individual and family that comes to us,” says Amanda Douglass. “Because we are independent, and not a franchise, we have many more options in creating services that our members both need and enjoy that are not typical of most fitness centers. For example, there is a luxurious salon and spa on site that offers an array of luxury spa services and hair styling.” Says Amanda Douglass, “We are family friendly and family focused, helping every member to be their healthiest and at their best.” Team 85 Fitness and Wellness, 8500 K Johnson Boulevard, Bordentown. www.myteam85.com. Adapt Performance and Rehab A Better Weight Loss Plan The professionals at Adapt Performance and Rehab know how frustrating weight loss can be. They work with clients everyday who have done the fad diets, the calorie counting, the hot fitness programs that were supposed to help them trim the fat and get in shape, but none of it has worked long term. Adapt Performance and Rehab has come up with a better solution — one that actually works for busy adults. They are hosting a free fat loss workshop on Tuesday, July 16, at 7 p.m. to introduce Mercer County adults to a new, sustainable way of thinking about fitness and weight loss. “People come to us looking to lose weight and boost energy levels, but they need guidance to reach those goals without dieting or restrictive diet plans,” says Cody Plofker, director of performance, who co-founded Adapt Performance and Rehab with his business partner, physical therapist Dr. Payal Patel. “This workshop is for those who have tried everything already and want to learn why none of it has worked for them long term, and

what other options they have to sustainably lose weight without dieting. Workshop attendees can sign up afterward for free consultations where Adapt’s staff of performance coaches, nutrition coaches, and personal trainers set up customized plans to put them on the road to better fitness. “We talk about what they've tried before, what their goals and needs are, and come up with a program that aligns with their goals,” Plofker says. One simple philosophy they promote is that people need three things in their lives if they’re going

to make real progress: fitness, nutrition, and accountability. “We find that a lot of times, when people only have one or two of these things, it doesn’t work,” Plofker says. For instance, people can go to a gym, where they get fitness, but no accountability. Or they can hire a personal trainer at the gym to add accountability, but they still miss out on the nutrition piece. “We approach it with a holistic point of view. We tailor programs to our clients’ needs that deliver all three,” Plofker says. At Adapt Performance and Re-

hab’s 2,000-square-foot, open-concept fitness center, clients work with coaches and trainers on a schedule that works for them. “We fit fitness into their lives, rather than making it something that takes over their lives,” Plofker says. “We don’t expect them to be in the gym five days a week, we don’t do meal plans. It's about finding something they enjoy, that doesn't makes their joints hurt, and fits into their lives.” Everyone at Adapt gets their own personalized plan. They work with everyone, but they specialize in helping people age 40 to 60 — people for whom injuries have taken a toll over the years. People who tend to have the busiest lives and therefore, the least amount of time to dedicate to getting fit. “Our habit-based, life-changing solutions are for people who have tried everything under the sun and not had success,” Plofker says. “We exist to help them lead a healthier, more fulfilling life even if injuries or failed diet attempts have left them with no other options.” If you would like to attend their next free Fat Loss Workshop on July 16, simply call 609-218 8003. Center for Wellness Unique Treatment Options for Mental Health in Monroe Township Mental health (and substance abuse) issues impact many of our lives, either directly or through the struggles of our loved ones. Unfortunately, people often do not know where to turn for help. Additionally, there are barriers to treatment even when we do know where to seek help. Why is this important? Forgive the dry statistics to follow, but the lack of accessibility of services is something that is important to illustrate. Based on figures from 2017, 56.5 percent of Americans with mental health issues received no treatment. In the same year, one out of five (20.3 percent) of adults reported they were not able to get necessary mental health treatment. Just over half (50.6 percent) of children with a mental health condition aged 8-15 received mental health services in 2014. Various factors contribute to this, including lack of access to healthcare, lack of finances, lack of providers, etc. So how many people does this really mean? How many people are affected by mental health issues? The most recent data tells us that approximately one in five adults in the U.S. — 43.8 million, or 18.5 percent — experiences mental illness in a given year. 18.1 percent of adults — nearly one in five — in the U.S. experienced an anxiety disorder such as posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and specific phobias. Approximately one in five youth aged 13–18 (21.4 percent) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13 percent. In 2016, there were an estimated 10.4 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with SERIOUS mental illness. This number represented 4.2 percent of all U.S. adults. An estimated 49.5 percent of adolescents had any mental disorder. Of adolescents with any mental disorder, an estimated 22.2 percent had severe impairment. These statistics are from the National Institute of Mental Health, and can be found on their website - www.nimh.nih.gov. These numbers are, frankly, astounding. But so what? What do we mean by mental illness? What is mental illness? What are the signs and symptoms? Clearly, a single article may not be able to do justice to the nuances of the myriad mental health issues, but this is an attempt to outline symptoms in brief for more of the predominant mental health disorders. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is defined by excessive feelings of sadness, loss of interest/lack of pleasure, difficulties with sleep, energy, appetite, and concern. It also entails feelings of guilt, worthless, helplessness, and — sometimes — hopelessness. Thoughts of self-harm and even suicidal thoughts may occur. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) involves having excessive worry over various, sometimes “trivial” matters. Physical symptoms include muscle tension, fatigue, irritability, restlessness/

Panic attacks — feeling like one is physically uncomfortable to the point where they may be having a heart attack or stroke — can occur in the setting of GAD and also in Panic Disorder (recurring panic attacks and fear of the same). Bipolar Disorder involves depressive symptoms but also periods of manic (or hypomanic) symptoms, which involve excessive energy, racing thoughts, distractibility, impulsive behavior,

Center For Wellness aims to be a premier provider of substance abuse and mental health treatment services at an outpatient level. Services offered include Mental Health Partial Hospital Program, Intensive Outpatient Program, short-term outpatient individual counseling, as well as Substance Abuse IOP. decreased need for sleep, grandiose thoughts, risk taking, and increased activity level, among other symptoms. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is seen after one has suffered a trauma such as sexual abuse, sexual assault, physical abuse or assault, or other traumatic events. Symptoms in PTSD include re-experiencing the trauma via nightmares, flashbacks, and intrusive thoughts, and psychological or physiological arousal when recalling the trauma. Avoidance can occur of people, places, and things that are reminders of the trauma. Hopelessness and emotional numbness can occur. Hyperarousal — being hypervigilant and having an exaggerated startle response may occur.

Psychosis involves one’s “mind playing tricks on them” — whether this be paranoid and delusional thoughts or auditory and/or visual hallucinations. How does someone get help? Where can one turn for help if they are experiencing these symptoms? One option is to see an individual therapist and, possibly a psychiatrist. A therapist provides counseling services, while a psychiatrist may provide counseling as well as medication management. Locally, Dr. Gagandeep Singh, MD, is a double-board certified child/adolescent and adult psychiatrist, and has been named a New Jersey Top Doctor. He has a private practice here in Monroe Township, as well as in Freehold. Dr. Singh’s sessions in his private practice are never shorter than 30 minutes, as he does not believe in a “quick med check” and aims to provide supportive therapy at every appointment. He can be contacted directly at 609-245-8550 or www.gsinghmd.com. Dr. Singh is also the founder of Center For Wellness (CFW), which is a Partial Hospital Program and Intensive Outpatient Program agency on Applegarth Road in Monroe Township. Center For Wellness aims to be a premier provider of substance abuse and mental health treatment services at an outpatient level. Services offered include Mental Health Partial Hospital Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), short-term outpatient (‘traditional’) individual counseling, as well as Substance Abuse IOP. What are PHP and IOP? So what are these programs? These are services that are more intensive than “traditional” outpatient treatment, but not as restrictive as a hospital setting. These services provide a combination of group and individual counseling for at least nine hours per week and include psychiatric assessment and medication monitoring. The focus is primarily group therapy, but each client is assigned to a therapist for individual sessions at least every other week (IOP), if not weekly (PHP). The PHP program for mental health runs for 25 hours a week, Monday through Friday. IOP programs run three hours per day, three days per week. The Mental Health Adult IOP runs during the daytime, while the Adult Substance Abuse IOP (when running) is in the evening, to allow for work and other obligations. For Adolescents, the Mental Health IOP runs three days a week after school. Patients are seen for assessment by a licensed therapist, and the appropriate level of care is recommended. Some patients start at PHP, while others go straight to IOP, depending on the severity of symptoms. PHP is typically a brief initial intervention even when it is recommended, and most of the time spent in treatment is at the IOP level. Dr. Singh founded the agency after his clinical experience revealed a critical need for such services. With a dedicated and professional team, Center for Wellness aims to provide outstanding and clinically unparalleled treatment. Dr. Singh has worked in PHP and IOP programs for several years and believes his vision combines the most positive aspects of multiple programs.
