RHS student creates crowdsourced recipe book

New coordinator starts at hydroponic farm

By LOis LeVine Amanda Steele loves to volunteer in the Robbinsville community, but she always felt that she wanted to do more. So she got cooking. Steele, a 16-year-old Robbinsville High School student, is currently working on the Robbinsville Community Cookbook, a crowdsourced book for recipes by residents. The book will be sold at this year’s Community Day celebration, and proceeds will go to Ability Tree NJ, based in Robbinsville. Ability Tree has become one of Steele’s favorite charities. She learned about the group through her community church in Robbinsville and decided to get involved with the organization. She started working at the nonprofit’s Respite Nights, an evening where parents who have a child with a disability can leave their son or daughter with volunteers (siblings without disabilities can also attend), so that the parents can have a night out. The children play with each other, along with the volunteers, during the course of the evening. “After that, I volunteered as much as I was able to,” Steele said. But, for Steele, that wasn’t See COOKBOOK, Page 10

Ward drives Meals on Wheels Resident named Irish Person of the Year, to be honored March 21 By JenniFer GOeTZ John Ward grew up with a grandmother who gave back to her community. It’s no wonder he has dedicated his life to doing the same. Ward, the executive director of Meals on Wheels for Robbinsville Township, will serve as the Robbinsville Irish Heritage Association’s Irish Person of the Year for his contributions

to the community. RIHA celebrates its Irish roots every year with an annual parade on the third Saturday in March—this year’s parade is set for March 21. In addition to his work with Meals on Wheels, Ward is also part of the Robbinsville Township Senior Advisory Committee, volunteers with Robert Wood Johnson Hospital as a patient relations representative and serves on the hospital’s Patient and Family Advisory Council. In 2018, Ward received the Rotary Club of RobbinsvilleHamilton Vern Applegate Community Service Award. Ward’s dedication to his com-

munity, coupled with his Irish heritage, made him a perfect candidate for the award. While RIHA celebrates Irish culture, and Irish residents in the community, the organization is inclusive, said RIHA president Jim O’Donnell. O’Donnell said that the organization first started looking for candidates and accepting nominees in March or April of 2019. RIHA was set on honoring a member of the community who has played a role in helping support the Robbinsville area and beyond. “One of the criteria of being Irish person of the year is that See WARD, Page 7

A hydroponic farm, in the middle of a municipal center? Well, it all started in 2016, when Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried found out about hydroponic farming in freight containers. “He loved the idea and thought it would be beneficial to the township in terms of feeding programs and education on how to grow greens and learn more about nutrition,” said Kevin Holt, recreation manager for the Robbinsville Township. Now, the farm has a new coordinator—Hope Cahill, who took over for original caretaker Kyle Clement in January. “We can grow anything that is a leafy green,” Cahill said. “Here we are growing butterhead, oak leaf and lollo lettuce, as well as spring mix.” The farm also grows some herbs, basil and cilantro. Cahill, 25, is certified in aquaponics, an off-breed of hydroponics. After graduating high school, she got certified in a variety of different area of agriculture, and before taking this position worked as a naturalist at various garden centers, as well as with the Monmouth County Park system. The Robbinsville Irish Heritage Association named John Ward (front, right) as its Irish Person of the Year. The Robbinsville Township Police Department, led by Chief Chris Nitti (front, left) was also named the collective 2020 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal. RIHA representatives Jim O’Donnell and Dave Doran (front, center) made the announcement Nov. 9, 2019 at the Robbinsville Senior Center. WARD continued from Page 1 you have to have a bit of Irish in you,” Ward said. Ward recently took a DNA test offered through the Robbinsville Senior Center and found out he is 47 percent Irish, 3 percent Norwegian and 50 percent Dutch. When Ward was growing up, he was closely connected to his Irish roots. After his mom died when he was young, he was raised by his father and surrounded by his Irish side of the family. Ward and his father lived a simple life growing up on a farm, with a cold water pump, cows and a few hundred chickens. The family sold eggs, potatoes and other farm-fresh products to the community. “We lived a very spartan lifestyle,” Ward said. “It was a very plain, basic lifestyle. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” His upbringing also led to his interest in and future dedication to the Meals on Wheels program—he was inspired by his own grandmother’s generosity. “My grandma would not say no to anyone,” said Ward. “She would try to help out anyone she could.” As the executive director for Meals on Wheels, Ward is responsible for ordering meals weekly to be delivered Monday through Friday to Robbinsville residents that are homebound and in need of assistance. The private, non-profit organization has a presence just about anywhere in the United States. Meals on Wheels started in 1995, and the organization will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. If homebound, an individual may not be capable of preparing or getting meals independently. It can take a considerable amount of effort and energy to move from one place to the other. Ward said many Meals on Wheels clients are widows or widowers. “Then they’re the primary person in that household,” he said. “Now, they’re not able to even go to the food store.” Thanks to the 25 drivers who deliver meals, as well as Robbinsville Senior Center staff members who prepare and personalize each meal for every recipient, around 15 to 20 homes are delivered unique and

fresh meals on a week-day basis. Prior to his involvement with Meals on Wheels, Ward graduated from Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey), where he majored in science education. Ward went on to work in education for almost 40 years. He started out teaching science and then special education in the East Windsor School District. Ward went on to serve as the assistant principal and principal at Hightstown High School. After working in education for so long, Ward looked for a way to get involved with his local community. “I needed something to do to keep me busy after retiring,” said Ward. That led him to Meals on Wheels, where he started out as a driver. As of last month, Ward has been with Meals on Wheels for 10 years. “It’s an unbelievable experience,” Ward said. “You’re dealing with people that need meals, and they’re homebound, and we only work with Robbinsville Township.” In addition to providing homebound members of the community with healthy, diverse meals, drivers can also keep tabs on a person’s well-being. “Occasionally, we’ll come across someone who’s fallen,” Ward said. “You can look at their speech, and how they’re moving.” When something like that happens, Ward usually notifies a family member. As the executive director of Meals on Wheels, Ward is also responsible for being part of the township’s Senior Advisory Committee. At committee meetings, members discuss topics such as the senior center’s annual Sadie Hawkins dance, future open houses and more events to help keep seniors active in the community. Ward said he has received a lot of volunteer interest from the Robbinsville community for Meals on Wheels of late. “At this point we have volunteers that we can use, and there is a waiting list of people who would like to drive for meals on wheels, but there’s so many people that want to help,” Ward said. “That’s a good thing.”

Penn Medicine and Becker ENT have joined forces to continue their mission to deliver outstanding, compassionate, and convenient care to the residents of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

CAHILL continued from Page 1 ton Falls, Cahill will be soon moving to Freehold. Hydroponic farming is farming done without soil. Plants typically get all their nutrients from soil. In hydroponic farming, however, nutrientrich water takes the place of the soil, enriching the seedlings as they grow into fully mature plants and watering them at precise times through a computerized system. With the system that the Robbinsville Township purchased, known as the Leafy Green Machine, lettuces and herbs are grown in a vertical hydroponic farm that lives within a recycled, refrigerated, insulated, custom-built shipping container. Between the nutrient-rich water and light energy from powerful LEDs, greens can be independent of the need for land, climate and season, growing in a modular design that is also mobile and can theoretically live anywhere. The container consists of insulation, where it maintains an average internal temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in extreme climates; climate control, built with an integrated “economizer” that saves energy by drawing in cool outside air when appropriate and also doubling as an intake fan; a dehumidifier to maintain optimal humidity levels and decreasing the farms overall water consumption; airflow ducts, consisting of two fans that distribute cool carbon dioxide enriched air evenly; and a carbon dioxide regulator with a safety shut-off feature, providing plants with exactly the right amount of carbon dioxide needed for photosynthesis. In addition, the greenery’s LED lights provide the plants with the best quality light at its most efficient point. The LED boards are designed to emit only particular wavelengths of red and blue light, which are the colors that plants are able to absorb most easily for photosynthesis (red light is essential for stem and leaf growth, while blue light helps develop thick stems and dark green foliage). Just as it is in nature, Cahill and her team start with the seeds, which begin in a flowing hydroponic system and are placed into compressed peat moss, known as grow plugs. The peat-moss plugs act as a sponge for absorbing nutrient-rich water. The seeds soak for 10 minutes, are covered with a humidity dome and sit under grow lights for about a week. At that point, the seeds have become sprouts, with small roots, short stems and a few young leaves. They then move up to the next level, a flow troth, where the roots “get completely soaked,” Cahill said. Now actual seedlings, taller and sturdier than they had been, with a secure root system, the plants sit in that troth for another two weeks, getting consistent water and light to develop strong stems needed to support the plant’s weight later in its life cycle. After this time period, the seedlings are harvested and transplanted into the main cultivation area, where they are now in the towers, growing vertically for

Hope Cahill, the new coordinator of Robbinsville’s hydroponic farm, holds some of the farm’s yield. the first time. The roots, which are still in the peat-moss grow plugs, are wedged into stiff foam panels, which provide firm support, with the plant facing outward towards the LED light, encouraging the leaves to grow. Here, in this final destination, they spend from two to five weeks until they are ready for their harvest. “It is a continual cycle of putting new lettuce and herbs in, taking grown ones out,” Cahill said. Every week, the team has something to harvest. “What is nice about the system is that it is computerized, so that plants get exactly the nutrients it needs at the right time,” Cahill said. “Sensors on the computer know when they might need nitrates, or some other nutrient.” Freight Farm, the company that built the hydroponic farm equipment, also developed an app that can be used via a person’s iPhone or desktop computer to keep an eye on all sensor data. Holt admits he did not know much about hydroponic farming until Fried asked him to look into purchasing a machine. “I did a ton of research on what hydroponic farming is, to educate myself, and then looked into what companies are out there to make these container farms,” he said. “We talked to a lot of companies, and decided on Freight Farm, out of Boston. At the time, they told us we were the only municipality they had ever sold a freight farm container to.” Once Cahill and Holt have the finished products, the lettuce and herbs get donated back to the Robbinsville Senior Center.

A view of the produce inside of the shipping container that houses Robbinsville’s hydroponic farm. “We also give some of the produce to Meals on Wheels, and also Mercer Street Friends, who disperse it to schools,” Cahill said. “They distribute it to about a dozen schools in the Trenton area.” And how does the finished product taste? “It is honestly the best lettuce you can ever eat,” Holt said. “You really can see

and taste the difference between this produce and the produce you buy in a supermarket.” It looks good and feels good, too, Cahill said. “Before we distribute it, we take care to remove any brown or damaged leaves,” she said. “There are, of course, no pesticides, no chemicals that the greens were treated with, so it is very safe and very clean.” Both Cahill and Holt rave about how green and fresh the lettuce is, “with so much more taste to it than what you get in the stores, which by comparison, tastes so bland,” Holt said. Since starting the farm at the municipal center in 2017, companies have come through to see the set-up, expressing interest in buying machines for themselves. Holt said the township has also hosted schools and colleges, as well as field trips and local education programs. “Our mission is to grow, educate and unite: we grow the lettuce, give it away, educate the community about how hydroponic farming works, and unite people by asking them to volunteer or hold events, which is a catalyst for bringing people together,” Holt said. “This has been a huge win-win for the community.” Cahill said she is always seeking volunteers and visitors, as well. COOKBOOK continued from Page 1 quite enough. “I really wanted to do something on my own, and it occurred to me that a really big part of any culture is food,” she said. “There are so many different cultures in Robbinsville that I thought a really good way to unite our community was through the different foods that our cultures represent. And that’s when I thought of a cookbook. It could ser ve two purposes: There would be a fundraising aspect, to help raise money for Ability Tree NJ, but the actual cookbook could be a little part of Robbinsville’s collective culture.” And so, Steele, who herself loves baking (she spent Christmas break baking every day for her family) went to work. The planning started last August, when she started researching different companies who could produce the cookbook. “I decided on Morris Press Cookbooks: they have a nice function for inputting recipes and organizing how the cookbook will look,” she said. “I did that so I could create a legitimate proposal to pitch the idea to Dr. Natalie Schuberth [president of the New Jersey chapter of Ability Tree].” Schuberth loved the idea and helped Steele with strategizing ways to publicize the cookbook and elicit recipes. “I asked her how to market it, how to reach out to people,” Steele said. “We both agreed that social media would be a main vehicle for advertising.”

It was at that point that she decided Robbinsville seemed to be out, you to create a short video summarizing the could hear the highway, or people mowing their lawn. As of this writing, Steele has

about 70 recipes, a diverse list of just about “everything,” she said. “I have a bunch of desserts, chicken recipes, dishes for all courses, all types of food,” she said. “I have mandel bread, Greek dishes, Middle Eastern recipes like hummus and tabbouleh, Cajun catfish, even English dishes like shepherd’s pie.” Once Amanda finishes inputting all the recipes, she will design the cookbook. The original deadline was March 1, but “It’s a soft deadline,” she said. Steele recently pushed it back to March 10 to coincide with the publication of this article. The official launch of the cookbook is Robbinsville Community Day on June 13, where Steele will either be at her own booth or at the Ability Tree Booth, selling the book (right now she estimates the price to be $20), with all profits going to the charity. “The price point is determined by the number of recipes in the book and what it will take to produce,” she said. The name? “Simply The Robbinsville Community Cookbook,” Steele said. “It’s simple, straight to the point, and says just what it is.” Steele’s goal is to raise at least $1,500$2,000 for the charity, if she sells all the books (she is hoping to produce around 200). “That is my shoot for the moon, you will land among the stars goal.” If you have a recipe you would like to submit to the cookbook, send an email to Steele at rvillecooks@gmail.com.

Adena Blum named senior rabbi at area temple By Michele Alprin Congregation Beth Chaim in West Windsor will have a new senior rabbi starting on July 1. Associate rabbi Adena Blum has been selected to replace rabbi emeritus Eric Wisnia, who retired last year. Wisnia served the congregation for 42 years, followed by now-serving interim rabbi Brian Beal. A resident of Robbinsville, Blum grew up in Lawrence Township, where her parents still live. She’s also not far from her childhood synagogue, Har Sinai Hebrew Congregation in Trenton, where Wisnia, then a cantor, ignited her passion for Judaism as she worked with him on her bat mitzvah. “He saw my interest and aptitude, and he leaned into that,” she says. “We had all kinds of conversations about Jewish history, life and tradition.” Wisnia also taught her how to read Torah and to lead a Jewish prayer service. “I internalized what he taught me,” she recalls. And that came in handy when faculty member Rabbi Lauren Levy at the Lawrenceville School asked her to do bar mitzvah tutoring for the younger siblings of Jewish students whose families were not affiliated with a synagogue, which became another spur to her own learning. After her confirmation at Har Sinai at the end of 10th grade, Blum was won-

She decided to go, and the school gave her not only another opportunity to learn herself, but also another push toward Jewish education. She not only earned a

certificate there qualifying her to teach at Reform movement schools, but she was also required to be an assistant teacher at her home synagogue. Also during this period, two of her Jewish role models independently recognized her potential as a Jewish leader and suggested that she might want to become a rabbi.

Levy, Blum says, “starting joking that one day I should take her job,” and a Gratz teacher, Larry Sernovitz, pulled her aside and said, “You seem to enjoy this. Have you ever thought about becoming a rabbi?” This got her thinking that maybe they were right. She applied to Brandeis University for its great Near Eastern and Judaic studies department and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2006. She spent her junior year at the University of Haifa in Israel. Several years later she was accepted as a student at Hebrew Union College in New York, where she was ordained as a rabbi and earned a master’s degree in religious education. During her years in rabbinical school, she served as a rabbinic intern at two New Jersey synagogues, a Hillel (college-level Jewish organization), two hospitals and two summer camps of the Union for Reform Judaism. During her six years at Beth Chaim as assistant and associate rabbi, Blum has grown as a religious leader and in return contributed much to the congregation. She became more skilled in pastoral work by working with people of all different ages in much more intimate ways. “When you are a full time pulpit rabbi, people really let you into their lives in ways that they might not let a part-time student rabbi,” she says. She has learned the skills necessary to run an organization. “Out of necessity I

have learned a lot about the business side of synagogue life: marketing, budgeting, how to increase revenue and minimize expenses and fundraising,” she says. Blum has developed a more holistic approach to Jewish education. That starts with strengthening the ties between the preschool, where she has been very involved, and the synagogue. “We don’t want the families [that identify as Jewish] to think of us just as a necessary service in their likes; we hope they see Beth Chaim as their spiritual community as well,” she says. Blum has also created more opportunities for parents to be involved in their children’s training for their b’nai mitzvahs, ceremonies where thirteen-year-olds first take on the responsibilities required of an adult Jew by reading Torah and leading services. “I’m not working with students in a vacuum, but really creating it as a family milestone and working with the family as a whole,” Blum says. One program she initiated is a six-week family class. She has also worked with the current b’nai mitzvah families to get their feedback on the process and “to reenvision what it can look like.” Not only did it help her understand their perspectives, but, she says, “Those families felt heard.” Blum also changed the way the students interact with their Torah portion, by having them write a “Dvar Torah,” their own take on the weekly reading from the first five books of the Bible. “Before they created a summary, and now they really dive deep into the meaning of the Torah portion,” she says. Blum also instituted an interfaith family Shabbat, she says, “to honor non-Jewish family members in the congregation who are committed to having a Jewish family.” She herself grew up in an interfaith family, where she learned important lessons that would affect the character of her rabbinate. “Not only am I very sensitive to issues around interfaith families, but also those same issues have really helped me understand inclusion writ large: how do we help everyone who might feel on the outside feel included in our community,” she says. Blum’s vision of inclusion also encompasses gender. “We as a staff have been learning a lot about gender identity and are trying to use inclusive language to show that we are a safe place for anyone of any gender identity, including using pronouns in emails as a marker,” she says. Inclusion also means making people feel as comfortable as possible with the prayer services. In that vein Blum transitioned the congregation to a new prayer book that transliterates all the prayers and uses more contemporary language, which makes it “much more accessible.” Inclusion can also be communal. Blum

is closely involved with other religious leaders in West Windsor and those in the Windsor-Hightstown Area Ministerium, or Wham, where she served as president between 2017 and 2019. She has also worked closely with the Muslim Center of Greater Princeton in West Windsor on community-wide interfaith dialogue, especially in response to current events. And, she adds, “we have had an incredible response from the mosque whenever an anti-Semitic incident in the news.” Engaging difficult demographics, like young families and teens, is a challenge for many synagogues, Beth Chaim included. Beth Chaim is thinking strategically about how to engage young families who do not have children in Beth Chaim’s preschool, and Blum describes two ideas. The first is to partner with Wendy Soos, executive director of the JCC Princeton Mercer Bucks and Abrams Camps. The camp has a large audience of unaffiliated families and will also be running PJ Library, which provides free Jewish books to young children and also plans programs to engage parents. The second idea is to reach outside the Jewish world. “We need to start thinking out of building to engage these young families,” Blum says. That could mean doing programming in local libraries and community centers, places they would already go, to lower barriers of entry. “If they create relationships with the rabbi or other staff then they are more likely to come to a Tot Shabbat [Sabbath] in our building,” Blum says. Regarding teens, she says, “We are trying to think of the big picture. We’ve been leaning toward social justice and advocacy work. How do we help them realize that Judaism can empower them to make a meaningful difference in the world through positive change.” Blum speaks to Rabbi Wisnia every couple of weeks, she says, “as we are both trying to navigate these new waters for both of us.” His continuing support of her leadership, past and into the future, is assured, but, she says, “we are trying to figure out what his new role as emeritus will be.” Her mother, Robin Kemper, is a structural engineer who recently served as president of her professional organization. Her father, Christopher Kemper, is in the pharmaceutical industry, initially in drug development and now consulting to help drug companies with their drug development processes and getting FDA approval. Her husband, Sean, does corporate finance for a construction company. They have two sons, Jonah and Ari. Looking to the next five years, Blum had a short answer to what she hopes to accomplish. “The big thing is continuing to having a thriving, vibrant Jewish community in this part of New Jersey.” And as to how she’s going to manage this in her new role, she says, “You learn how to be a very good multi-tasker.”

During her six years at Beth Chaim, Blum has grown as a religious leader and in return contributed much to the congregation.

After detour, Cruz dominates on mat for Ravens By Rich Fisher Mateo Cruz tried to be a wrestler at the Pond Road Middle School, but was stuck on the sidelines in 8th grade. The following year, he discarded wrestling to focus on football and lacrosse. It appeared his career on the mat was over. Which makes Cruz’s story all the more remarkable, considering he wrestled against some of the world’s top Roman Greco competition this past summer in Europe, and then competed in America’s top high school tournament in Fargo, North Dakota. “Yeah, it’s pretty amazing,” the Robbinsville High senior heavyweight said as he walked off the Ravens practice mat. “From not even wrestling to wrestling in other countries. Pretty cool.” Ravens coach Sean Flynn couldn’t agree more, saying “It’s a good story.” The story hoped to have a happy ending as Cruz carried an 18-6 record into the district tournament, which began Feb. 21. In effect, all his accomplishments have basically been crammed into two years, as he spent most of his sophomore season just cutting weight. It’s best to start at the beginning. Cruz wrestled for two seasons at

Pond Road but, by his 8th-grade year, he was too heavy to wrestle at the middle school level. Flynn still wanted him as a freshman, saying “you’d have an instant heavyweight for four years.” Cruz, however, had other plans. “I thought of trying football,” he said. “At the time I was really into lacrosse and I decided to not wrestle and play both of those sports. I realized I didn’t have the love for football that I had for wrestling and lacrosse so I decided to come back the next year.” By then, Cruz had expanded to 320 pounds so he had work to do. “It was very hard coming back,” he said. “It was a big change of pace. I was re-learning (wrestling) and losing weight. I cut down and finished around 265 that year; that was tough. It took a long time.” There was no secret formula. Just hard work. “I got myself on a really strict diet,” Cruz said. “I started wrestling every day. I ran hard every day and just put the work in. No shortcuts.” Flynn was impressed with Cruz’s efforts. “Obviously he was behind the eight ball a little bit,” the coach said. “The focus was on training and wrestling, but he had to get his weight down too. I think

Robbinsville wrestler Mateo Cruz has competed both nationally and internationally. (Photo by Rich Fisher.) maybe there was less focus on wrestling and more about the weight at that point. Which is why some of the results were what they were. He didn’t have a lot of competition at that younger age and not wrestling as a freshman put him behind.

“But then he started to come into his own his sophomore year and got much better his junior year. That really lit a fire under him. He decided to do a lot in the off-season after last year. It’s really paid off this year, and he’s done a great job for us.” Cruz had a strong finish to his junior year and placed second in districts before dropping his first regional match. “I learned at regions to kind of take my time with it,” he said. “I was wrestling antsy. I didn’t have any big tournament experience.” That all changed over the summer. With the help of former Mercer County Tournament Director and Robbinsville Wrestling Association coach Mark Bossie, Cruz was one of two Mercer County wrestlers chosen for The Young Lions USA Greco and Freestyle Club’s touring team. Coached by former U.S. Olympic coach Richard Estrella, the group wrestled Greco Roman competition in Denmark and Germany. Aside from what he learned on the mat, it was a great culture trip for Cruz. “It was amazing,” he said. “I’m in these little nooks and crannies of the world and I’m learning this world class wrestling. It was great seeing how that part of the world works. I met a bunch of cool people.” Asked what jumped out at him, Cruz

chuckled. “You’re gonna laugh, but the food,” he said. “It’s different. It’s not how they make it over here. And probably the people I met. I met some really humble people. It was cool to see how their education system works. They go to school for what they like. They go to their grade school, and in their high school years they find their own path.” Upon returning home, The Young Lions wrestled in Fargo, which included both Greco and Freestyle. The experience was invaluable. “Wrestling heavyweight with big guys it’s a whole different ballgame,” Cruz said. “There’s a whole lot of different set-ups. I learned a bunch of tosses, I learned how to position myself better, it taught me a lot of upper body stuff. The lower body stuff wasn’t exactly for me.” Flynn saw a vastly improved wrestler return to the Ravens room this winter. “Just to be immersed in wrestling and training for a month long with some great wrestling minds, and even challenging yourself, your body position, training with a different style of wrestling was great for him,” the coach said. “The mindset to go compete in those tournaments is a testament to the person he is. Not a lot of guys would put themselves out there knowing the challenge they’re up against. “Trying to learn that and then go out and compete against kids who’ve been practicing that style for years was tough and challenging, but it was also a great learning experience for him. It improved his wrestling greatly, improved his

mindset about the sport greatly. He was able to bring a lot of that back with him. He’s been a great leader for us.” Ironically, one of those moves he learned cost Cruz at the Mercer County Tournament, as he had a big lead and then got caught trying a move and was pinned. To his credit, he wrestled back for fifth place. “I was super upset,” he said. “But ever since a young age I’ve been told to get over the losses. I was told don’t let a win go to your head or a loss to go your heart. I try to stick by that. It was a hard pill to swallow at first but I came back and crushed everybody else that was in my way and took pride (in wrestling back to fifth).” Cruz will continue his career at Penn College of Technology in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Celebrating Robbinsville’s school staff KATHIE FOSTER FROM THE SCHOOLS

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of traveling with several colleagues from the University of Pennsylvania across the globe to New Zealand. Our purpose was to work with professors at the University of Auckland to study how New Zealand had successfully integrated literacy, assessment, and student-centered learning throughout their educational system. We did this, of course, by spending time visiting schools in the surrounding area. I remember arriving at one particular K-8 school on a rainy day to discover the words “Find Joy in Work” etched on the front archway. In that moment, it struck me as a beautiful and deeply meaningful message for all who entered this sacred space. Here in Robbinsville, we expect all of the adult members of our school community— teachers, administrators, support staff, contractors and others—to appreciate the incredible privilege of providing safe and joyful places of learning for each student who walks through the door. One of our goals is to ensure parents that we view our responsibility to care for their children as a steadfast commitment, one that we take seriously at all times. It is our hope that as we live and demonstrate this commitment our students will, in turn, find joy in navigating life, cultivating connections with others,

and falling in love with learning. Over the years I have had the good fortune to work with a countless number of caring and compassionate individuals, many of whom are content to simply work quietly, without fanfare, behind the scenes, but whose contributions are critical to the happy and healthy day to day operation of our bustling school community. Today I am pleased to highlight a handful of these individuals. Each possesses the salient ability to find joy in their work every day. Meet Gerard Bullock. A valued member of the RHS custodial team, Gerard exhibits boundless energy and a smile that won’t quit. He has made it his mission to call people by name and, as anyone who has met him knows, his positivity is contagious! At 27 years young, Gerard is an explorer at heart. He has traveled throughout the United States and Europe and along the way developed a soft spot for the sandy beaches of Santorini, Greece. An avid basketball fan, Gerard enjoys cheering on the New York Knicks and hopes to one day see the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team compete on their home court. He is passionate about family and lives according to the motto Be Kind to Others. We thank you, Gerard, for your happy heart and for exemplifying how to find joy in work and in life! Kim Ott is a woman of many hats. Currently in her ninth year as our transportation dispatcher, Kim knows every street in Robbinsville like the back of her hand.

Along with Tammy Arnwine, our transportation coordinator, Kim helps to oversee the safe transportation of 2500+ students to and from school each day. Often, with only minimal notice, she is called on to jump behind the wheel to cover a run, field trip or sporting event. As the head of the central registration office, Kim has the privilege of greeting every family new to Robbinsville Public Schools and ensuring that they feel welcome while transitioning to their new town. A familiar face at sporting events, Kim often serves after hours as a member of the district’s security team. Two short years ago, Kim and her husband George welcomed their first grandson, George IV, into their lives. As you can imagine, weekends and holidays are filled with their own special kind of joy with little G4 on the scene. Kim, we thank you for your strong work ethic and for always going the extra mile for our students and colleagues. We appreciate you! Recently I read an article that contained a list that detailed how people can find more happiness at work. One way is to help someone else solve a problem. Phil DeMarco, Trevor Quinn, and Mike Bruno do just that as they troubleshoot technology glitches for staff and students on a continual basis. In addition to ensuring that the network runs efficiently, our tech team is charged with providing support for the district’s Chromebook initiative. Beyond their work in Robbinsville, Phil, Trevor and Mike lead rich lives. Fun facts:

Before beginning his “second career” in Robbinsville, Phil worked for 32 years on the Space Shuttle Program and witnessed many Space Shuttle flights from the Kennedy Space Center. He even had an opportunity to meet several astronauts while in training for their space missions. Last year, Trevor and his wife Angela teamed up to open Prana Yoga Shala, a yoga studio in Princeton. They find it rewarding to watch new students grow as they embrace the benefits of yoga. Mike has always enjoyed the challenge of working with his hands. In addition to working on sports cars, he has become an expert at home remodeling and repair. In the years to come, I won’t be surprised to see Mike with a starring role on his own HGTV series! We are grateful to Gerard, Kim, our technology team and to each member of our school community for their professionalism and unwavering commitment to our students. While we know that our staff members find purpose in their work, we are proud that they understand and demonstrate the importance of building connections and relationships with one another as well as with our students and their families. It is in these connections that we find meaning. It is in these connections that we derive fulfillment. It is in these connections that we find joy in our work and in our lives. Kathie Foster is the Superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

The New Jersey League of Municipalities is once again giving college-bound juniors and seniors the opportunity to win one of three $1,000 scholarships through the Louis Bay 2nd Scholarship Competition. Two former Robbinsville High students, Claire Speranza (Virginia Tech) and Jen Consiglio (Penn State), produced winning submissions in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The multiaccomplished Ashley Stamboulian (Villanova) was one of 15 finalists in 2018. According to LinkedIn, Claire is a graduate student performing her clinical studies in occupational therapy, Jen is working for Oracle in the Boston area and Ashley is a sophomore finance and business analytics major, with a minor in political science. Many of the elected officials and appointed board members serve Robbinsville and hundreds of other municipalities with little or no compensation. The purpose of this particular scholarship, now in its 26th year, is to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government while raising awareness of municipal government in general. Louis Bay 2nd was mayor emeritus of Hawthorne and an active participant as a league board member and past president for 60 years. The statewide scholarship competition centers on the theme: “What My Municipal Government Does Best” and seeks to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer members of the municipal government. This year’s deadline is March 11. Please visit robbinsville. net for competition criteria and an application. The altruistic desire of elected officials to serve their community compels them to public service. They give of their time and talents to help plan our community and preserve our way of

All entrants will receive a certificate of participation from the Mayor’s office. The winner from each municipality will be designated as a state semifinalist. Good luck! *** Speaking of the elected officials, I am thrilled to announce that longtime councilman and former mayor Vince Calcagno has been nominated by the NJSLM to its Elected Officials Hall of Fame. Vince is one of the most dedicated public ser vants I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and his dedication to our senior community is unmatched, in my opinion. Councilman Calcagno will be inducted on April 3 at the State House Annex. Congratulations, Vince! *** Happy 100th birthday to former Washington Township committeeman and deputy mayor Gordon Higgins, who became our latest centenarian on Feb. 22! Now that is a well-earned proclamation! Dave Fried is the Mayor of Robbinsville Township.
