Goal!

Local cadet earns Naval honors By JULia MaRnin Jessica Murray was prepared for the physical challenges that came with training in Navy boot camp. The 18-year-old Robbinsville resident played varsity soccer at the High School and holds a third degree blackbelt—she was previously employed as a karate instructor. It was the mental challenges during Recruit Training Command in Illinois, where all U.S. Navy enlistees must begin their career, that revealed themselves to be the toughest hurdles for her. “They would get in your face, yell a lot, and mess with your mind,” she says. “I had moments where I wanted to give up, but that's where your shipmates come in. They come back and help put you back in the right mindset.” Despite the challenges, Murray prevailed throughout the eight weeks. Not only did she make it through boot camp, she graduated as top Sailor from Division 399, which had a total of around 830 other recruits. Her accomplishment earned her the Military Excellence Award on Oct. 25. “The MEA is awarded to the recruit that best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm, devotion to duty, military bearing and teamwork. The award placed Murray at the pinnacle of today’s newest sailors,” says a press release issued by Recruit Training Command’s public affairs. Murray’s honor did not come See MURRAY, Page 9

‘Keeping his spirits high’ After fire, Robbinsville family faces recovery By JenniFeR GoetZ This was an especially difficult holiday season for the Cino family. Tragedy struck on Thanksgiving Day, when the patriarch of the family, Tony Cino, attempted to repair the furnace at his Robbinsville home. A devastating fire broke out, with the flames engulfing Tony. Tony was badly injured,

and only saved after his son Giovanni stepped in to pull his father to safety. Giovanni didn’t think twice about rushing in, but the moments afterward were traumatic. “My little brother, Giovanni, is who found my dad with his clothes on fire, helped tear them off, and call 911 so he was rather shaken up and not speaking much,” Tony’s son Giuseppe said. Giuseppe and his older brother Michael, who live in North Carolina, came as quickly as they could after hearing the news. The brothers got

in the car and drove all through the night and were able to arrive at the hospital around 8 a.m. the next day. The trip, of course, was tense. “We got the news with so much uncertainty of how badly he had been burned,” Giuseppe said. “It was a very somber car ride.” The brothers walked into the hospital room and saw their father completely covered in bandages with only his face exposed. They would soon learn that he had suffered from second- and third-degree burns that would require a number See CINO, Page 10

The Shoppes at Foxmoor has finally found its anchor tenants. Planet Fitness signed on to open a Robbinsville franchise last month—it will be one of 1,800 Planet Fitness gyms across the country. STEM Academy, a school and childcare facility, will also anchor the 126,000-sq.ft. plaza. Planet Fitness joins Fit Body Boot Camp as Foxmoor’s second fitness tenant. The fortunes of the shoppping center have declined since Thriftway, its original anchor, closed in 2011. Many residents had hoped that another grocery store would take over. Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried acknowledged their disappointment in this month’s column in the Robbinsville Advance, saying that they attempted to draw in a food store but were unsuccessful. Built in 1986, Foxmoor has seen a host of tenants come and go over the last decade and, at one point, had a 41 percent occupancy rate. Penmark Management Company bought the shopping center in August of 2018 for $7.5 million. Since then, a number of tenants have opened up shop in the plaza, including Thai Ginger, Justin’s Barber Shop, ATA Hamilton Karate, Code Ninjas, The Healthy Animal and Mathnasium. Officials hope Foxmoor’s occupancy rate will reach 85 percent within the next two months.

Bishop honored with mayoral proclamation

Shirley Bishop, Robbinsville Township’s affordable housing consultant, recently retired after 15 years in the position. Bishop was honored at the Dec. 5 township council meeting with a proclamation presented by administrator Joy Tozzi on behalf of Mayor Dave Fried. “Ms. Bishop has been invaluable in helping Robbinsville Township remain compliant regarding its lawful affordable housing obligation,” read the proclamation. “Her guidance in preparing two ‘Third Round’ plans for the Township in 2008 and 2018—the latter after the New Jersey Supreme Court vacated all prior substantive certifications—has been widely applauded as a master class in town planning.” Township affordable housing liai-

son Gail Pfister, who has worked closely with Bishop over the years, and Robbinsville Township Council, were all on hand to honor Bishop.

Doughboy statue celebrating centennial

Robbinsville’s Doughboy monument will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year, and Terri Rinyu of the township’s public works department is working on creating mini biographies of each man honored on the statue. On Oct. 16, 1920, the monument was erected at Route 33 and Main Street in Robbinsville. The land was donated by John B Yard, a civil war veteran, to the residents for a memorial to the service men of Washington Township (now Robbinsville Township). See AROUND TOWN, Page 8

Project Freedom breaks ground in Town Center

Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried, business administrator Joy Tozzi, members of township council and the Project Freedom family, led by director Tim Doherty and co-founder Norman Smith,

held the ceremonial ground breaking for the second Project Freedom in town, which will help anchor Town Center South. Robbinsville is home to the very first Project Freedom on Hutchinson Road, providing services such as recreation, training and advocacy in the form of 35 units designed specifically for people with disabilities and/or mobile impairments.

The TCS location will consist of 72 units, 18 percent of which will be restricted to supportive housing for the developmentally disabled. Each unit is considered “affordable” and helped Robbinsville Township reach the 638 credits needed to satisfy its affordable housing obligations with both the New Jersey Superior Court and the Fair Share Housing Center through 2025.

CINO continued from Page 1 of surgeries before the healing process could begin. “We visited the home after,” Giuseppe said. “It was difficult to see it torn apart from firefighters.” Everything in the house was lost— nothing could be salvaged due to smoke damage. It was a somber scene, Giuseppe said, and it was a lot to take it. “Seeing family photos on the wall amidst the destruction was very emotional, especially with how quiet it was,” he said. On top of everything, the fire also occurred on the cusp of a new venture for Tony, as him and his partner Benny Cole had initially planned to open up Mamma Giacomina’s, a new restaurant in the old Square Deli location at 2611 Whitehorse Hamilton Square Road in Hamilton, the following week, on Tuesday, Dec. 3. To Tony, working in the restaurant industry is more than an occupation or role—it’s a true passion. “My grandmother says my dad has been cooking since he could walk,” Giuseppe said. “He is a natural chef and loves sharing that talent, so he naturally wanted to open a restaurant.” Tony and Cole have spent the last half-year getting the restaurant ready to open. It was a long process with a lot of moving parts, Giuseppe said. “They have been working on it for six months building a kitchen, replacing the floors, painting everything possible, remodeling the bathroom, creating countertops, getting the legal paperwork and food serving inspections,” Giuseppe said.

Mamma Giacomina’s has since opened and is serving Italian-style meals and dishes. Its deli, bistro and catering services are available for Hamilton residents and the surrounding community to enjoy with family, friends and for work events. The restaurant offers lunch, dinner, sandwiches, salads, desserts and daily specials. Watching the restaurant operate has been a little bit bittersweet for Tony, Giuseppe said. “He is happy that the restaurant opened, but there is not one minute that goes by that he is not thinking about it,” he said. “In the hospital, he sometimes dozes off and wakes up having dreamt about prepping peppers and onions. A few weeks after the fire, though, things have started to settle down for the Cino family. “My family is doing well now that everything has stabilized,” Giuseppe said. “We visit my dad as much as possible, and our spirits are high for his recovery, but we do still worry about how he will feel after his release from the hospital.” The Cino family is looking for ward to Tony’s release in the next few months. It is expected that he will need some mobility assistance, and the family is looking into accommodations while also planning a trip for Tony to North Carolina to see his three granddaughters. Tony is also looking forward to getting to his restaurant, and that has been encouraging him to stay positive during a difficult and challenging time. “Hearing about the restaurant is what is keeping his spirits high, though he desperately wishes he was there,” Giuseppe said.

Robotics team offers alternate public transit soluition By Lois Levine An alternate solution to public transportation in Robbinsville created by nine and 10-year-olds? That’s the magic of the FIRST LEGO League competitions, and Dipali Gavande and her team of Robbinsville students are an example of that. The team’s idea is centered around using a tram that would reduce public and school transportation costs as well as road repairs. As Dev explains, “our solution is named SchoolSIT, and it is a school transit network with a mini-tram rail that runs along the edge of the sidewalk. The land has a dual purpose; it serves as a track for the tram during pick-up and drop-off hours, and a walkway for the rest of the day.” The mini-tram can also be used by residents on certain occasions. The students work on the project after Dipali Gavande, Dev Gavande, Gabriel Dundale, Eshan Kanade, Dyanada and Vijay Gavande, members and school a few afternoons a week, usually coaches of DNA Robotics, created an alternate mode of public transportation for a recent competition. at the Gavande home. “We still have to do some things with the details, the width, In 1989, NYC-born engineer, entre- Christiansen and owner of the LEGO length, height of the tram and how all the Dyanada, (who is a mentor to Dipali’s systems will be organized. ideas with Thomas Egan, a police officer in Robbinsville’s traffic division and Kathie Foster, Superintendent of Robbinsville Schools, and both have very much liked what they have seen and heard so far. Dipali explained the concept a little further. “The average walkway size would be four feet wide, so we would have to increase current walkways to about 55 inches,” he said. “There would 10-12 rows in a tram, and two to three cars per tram train, so a total of 30-36 passengers.” The team has even created a budget for the proposal, which Dipali notes, “really needs input from experts. Considering the size and complex nature of the project , this is still in the primary phase, but we really believe this project has potential. It is cost-effective and the safest way to transport students to and from school, especially in towns like Robbinsville, but also in large cities.” The team has also created a map with a color legend, showing three possible routes, coded on the map in pink, blue and green. The blue route, for Sharon School, would run along Sharon Road, Route 33 onto Route 526; the pink route would take Route 526 all the way to Pond and Robbinsville High School, as well as Tindall Road to Pond and RHS. And the green route either would run along Route 33 or along Union Street to Washington Boulevard, to Pond and Robbinsville High school. A Hutchinson Road route can also be added to this. “We found out that it would be hard to get approval from three authorities: Route 33 is a state highway and Route 526 is a county road—inner roads require permits from township authorities,” Dipali said. “Our best bet would be to follow our green route as an initial step, which is a small distance (2.75 miles) to start with. This covers the town center and Foxmoor area, which does not get bus services. This route would only need approval from the township.” For now, the team will continue to work on the project, get feedback from engineers, financial experts and other township authorities, and, said Dipali, “hopefully, we will be able to use the information we have by then to merge into next year’s FIRST Lego League challenge. And who knows: in the near future, thanks to three fourth and fifth-grade students, Robbinsville residents may be looking at a whole new way to travel.

U.S., 9-16 elsewhere) that, through technological competitions, invites school teams to research, build and experiment with science and technology. Gavande’s team, which is called DNA ROBOTICs, did very well in its first year out, receiving a “Judges Award” (an award given to a team for distinctive recognition) for FIRST LEGO League’s “Into Orbit,” where teams had to develop a solution to social and physical problems humans face during long-duration space exploration. They created a headset which would have all the features of augmented reality technology and also act as an aid to vision and balance, helping with concentration and memory during space travel and reduce astronaut space motion sickness. Every year, FIRST LEGO League introduces a scientific, real-world challenge for teams to work on. The challenge includes designing and programming LEGO Mindstorm robots (programmable robots based on LEGO building blocks) to complete tasks, working out a solution to a problem related to that year’s theme and then meet for tournaments. Challenge themes have been both fascinating and diverse, from improving the ways people and animals interact to figuring out a way to make less trash, to last year’s challenge, called “Into Orbit,” where teams had to imagine themselves being transported into space, and coming up with ideas to explore and innovate in the vast universe beyond earth. This year, Dipali has three students on her team: her son Dev Gavande, Gabriel Dundale (both 10 years old), fifth-graders at Pond Road Middle School, and Eshan Kanade (9 years old), a fourth-grader at Sharon Elementary School. The 2019 FIRST LEGO League Competition theme was “City Shaper,” and the challenge was for students to identify a problem with a building or public space and develop an innovative solution to benefit the community. As Dipali explained, “the actual City Shaper competition is done: we didn’t have the time to advance to the competition level, but we are going to continue with the project. At this point we are trying to get feedback from people who work in the township, financial people, engineers and others from New Jersey Transit, those kind of professionals. We want to get all the information right and perhaps we can then incorporate it into next year’s challenge.” Gavande’s team has already shared their

Jack Pallitto pretty much has his future mapped out. “I want to play hockey forever,” Pallitto said. “I want to play in college and after that play in men’s leagues probably ‘til I’m 80; or as long as I can go. defenseman. He vigorously accepted the challenge. “I had to work on my stick handling a lot,” he said. “I wasn’t that good at it, I couldn’t handle the puck that well. So I worked with a ball, a shooting mat and a net in my basement. I’d just spend hours down there just shooting and stick handling. It made me a better shooter and a better stick handler.” When Pallitto returned last year, he, Ducalo and Liam Hartmann became a potent line that would combine for 51 of the Ravens 89 goals in a 10-9-2 season. “I don’t think I expected to have as good a year as I did,” Pallitto said. “I had really great teammates, that made a big difference. I was on a great line. Mitch is a great player. I’m with him again this year and my brother. That’s pretty cool. We were never on the same team before and now we’re on the same line.” And while Pallitto has improved his offensive skills, his physical presence remains to give him an added dimension. “I want to hit people,” he said. “I want to get the puck. I can hit pretty hard and I can knock guys off the puck. It does give me an advantage that I can get that puck from guys by using my body.” Aside from his talents, Pallitto is also a team captain along with Jeremy Van Duren, Ducalo and Shane Martin. Van Duren is currently sidelined with an injury but should return later in the season. A more unfortunate injury occurred when senior Nick Lawrence tore his ACL in gym class and will be lost for the season. It is the second such incident for Lawrence, who missed his freshman

campaign by tearing his opposite ACL. The Ravens are dedicating their season to Lawrence, who Pallitto feels probably would have been voted a captain had he not been injured. “He was my Swiss army knife, he could do everything,” Bergan said. “This was a kid I could use as a first-line or a second-line forward, I could put him a lot of places. When you talk about the character of a team, he provides it. He has great character. Nick’s with us both emotionally and physically at our games this year.” Pallitto echoed his coach’s thoughts. “Nick’s an awesome teammate,” he said. “He does everything the team needs him to do. It’s really rough because he didn’t get to play his freshman year with the same injury. The two full years we had him he was an important piece. He could kill penalties, he could finish goals, he’s a good player.” So too, is Pallitto, who is eyeing such colleges as Towson (where he has been accepted), Rutgers and Delaware to try and continue his career. Now in his third year up front, he truly feels like a forward. “I’m really happy,” he said. “I love feeling like I’m helping the team and I feel like I’m doing a lot more helping the team up front than I would have been back on defense.” As does his coach. “I really liked him on defense, but I really like him at forward too,” Bergan said. “He’s gonna stay there, I think he won me over with that. That may not have been my move, but it ended up being a great move.

FROM THE SCHOOLS

A picture book is worth a thousand words By Kathie Foster Will it surprise you to learn that one of my favorite things to do at this time of year involves visiting the children’s section of my local bookstore? I love nothing more than settling in to peruse the newest picture books. Although my own children are long grown, I find great comfort and joy in the ability of so many authors to weave together beautiful prose and illustrations in order to create magical tales for children and, yes, adults alike! There is something about a good story that evokes a sense of wonder, stirs the imagination, awakens deep feelings, and challenges us to expand our definition of who we are and how we relate to the world around us. A picture book is definitely worth a thousand words. Many parents are so eager for their kids to get ahead that they ditch the picture books early on. Because chapter books contain more text and fewer pictures, many believe that the stories in chapter books are more complex. Actually, with rich vocabulary and challenging themes, picture books can be quite sophisticated. It is important not to rush little ones away from reading picture books for this genre provides a host of benefits for children of all ages.

First, we know that picture books are wonderful ways to introduce early literacy skills and since they are meant to be read aloud, children are able to hear language and begin to associate words with pictures. As they are introduced to new words, their vocabulary repertoire expands. Remember when your child picked the same bedtime story for the tenth evening in a row? Well, there has been some research suggesting that reading the same story over and over again increases a child’s vocabulary by 12%. The rhythm and rhyme of certain books such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See or Chicka Chicka Boom Boom help children practice patterns, improve memorization skills and increase phonetic awareness. And of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t include the ubiquitous Dr. Seuss whose fantastical characters and worlds, sharp and repetitive rhymes, and rolling tongue twisters give all of us permission to be silly and find joy in word play. Picture books are not only for young children. Illustrations often require more advanced students to analyze context clues to make inferences about character’s emotions and interactions. Sometimes the illustrations alone suggest various subplots that are not com-

municated in the text. Additionally, many of the themes found within picture books provoke deep thinking, problem solving, and decision making as characters are faced with difficult dilemmas. In What Would You Do with an Idea? author Kobi Yamada tells the story of a young child with an idea - one he is initially reluctant to embrace. As his confidence in it grows, however, the idea is fed and nurtured until it transports him to place he had never imagined. Remember Humpty Dumpty? Well, we know that Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. However, after the great fall, our friend Humpty is suddenly terrified of heights! Check out Dan Santa’s book, After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again). Picture books have the capacity to build empathy and normalize feelings. Who among us can’t relate to Alexander and his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day? In this book, eleven-year old Alexander can’t seem to get a break. He wakes up with gum in his hair, has no dessert at lunch, and, what’s worse, the dentist finds a cavity! Children can certainly connect to Alexander whose day goes from bad to worse with one disaster after another. Are you looking for an entry point to deeper conversations around culture, equity, and learning to appreciate multiple perspectives? In The Name Jar, Unhei, a new student from Korea, is nervous about classmates’ reactions to her name. Ultimately, she decides to tell the class that she will choose a new American name. Find out how she learns to appreciate her own name. Last Stop on Market Street tells the story of a grandmother who teaches her grandson to appreciate the world in a new way on their daily walk to and from the bus stop. Picture books can be effective resources to draw upon the cultural and linguistic diversity of our

students, engaging reluctant learners and expanding knowledge of each other and the world. Some of my personal favorites include: Goodnight Moon: A truly timeless classic written in 1947 by Margaret Wise Brown, this book is written as a lullaby with slow and calming rhythms that lull a child to sleep. The bunny participates in a bedtime ritual of saying goodnight to all. Where the Wild Things Are: A 1964 winner of the Caldecott Medal for the Most Distinguished Picture Book of the Year, 1964, you will join Max on his adventures as he sails away to the land where the wild things are. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble: The tender tale of a young boy who finds a magic pebble and the madcap adventure that ensues as he tries to find his way home, the story of Sylvester is among my top 10! Or this new gem! Just Ask! Be Different, be Brave, Be You: Written by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and illustrated by award-winning artist Rafael Lopez, this lovely story helps children understand that whatever their circumstances, each is special in a good way. As we approach winter break, I urge you to set aside some time to read aloud with your children. The benefit of spending time together in this way will be multifaceted. In addition to setting the stage for life-long reading, you will help to increase your child’s attention span and develop her imagination. Reading aloud will strengthen his comprehension and assist in language development. Finally, read-aloud time is great one-on-one bonding time. Whatever your age, you will never be too old to share a picture book with family or loved ones! Kathie Foster is superintendent of Robbinsville Schools.

MAYOR’S COLUMN

What’s on deck at Foxmoor? By Dave Fried First, the great news regarding Foxmoor Plaza. Since Pennmark Properties purchased the 19-acre, 126,000 square foot shopping center at auction in August of 2018 for $7.5 million dollars, vacancies are declining rapidly. I am very pleased to announce that Planet Fitness and STEM Academy will serve as two of the center’s anchor tenants! When the bank finally relinquished the property and its millions in debts, the Foxmoor vacancy rate was listed at 41 percent. With another lease pending and another two poised to sign letters of intent, the occupancy rate in the oncebeleaguered plaza could reach 85 percent over the next 60 days. In addition, extensive work on the building façade is expected to begin in Spring, 2020. “Over the past twelve months there has been strong activity at the center, between the new tenants added and the renewals of the existing tenants,” Pennmark Properties CEO Don Cafiero said. “The Shoppes at Foxmoor is once again becoming a staple of the Robbinsville community and we’re excited to be part of the process.” The bad news for some may be that despite the best efforts of everyone involved in this revitalization, the anchor tenant will not be a supermarket. It certainly was not for a lack of trying. In conjunction with Pennmark, my team reached out to every major grocery and specialty chain on the East Coast, but the reality of three super ShopRite stores and a popular Acme all located within a five-minute driving radius proved to be a hurdle too large for those corporations to ignore. Built in 1986, Foxmoor was deemed an “area in need of redevelopment” by the Robbinsville Planning Board in August, 2016. That assessment was due to deteriorating conditions and a spike in vacancies since Thriftway closed

in 2011. Only approximately three of the center’s 19 acres are located in Hamilton Township, including Friendly’s Restaurant. Pennmark, which also owns the Suburban Square Shopping Center on Scotch Road in Ewing, is making good on its focus of health, fitness and education-centered companies making a home in the plaza. Tenants that have been signed since Pennmark took over are: Planet Fitness (One of the fastest growing health club franchises in the U.S. with more than 1,800 locations nationwide); Thai Ginger: (1,627 square foot Thai restaurant); Justin’s Barbershop: (1,453-square-foot franchise barbershop); ATA Hamilton Karate: (1,534-square-foot Karate studio); The Healthy Animal: (1,125-square-foot franchise pet food store); Code Ninjas: (2,027-square-foot franchise computer school for children); Mathnasium: (1,533-square-foot franchise after-school Math program for children); Fit Body Boot Camp: (3,040-square-foot fitness franchise for adults), and we are thrilled to welcome Stem Academy: (15,000-square-foot school/childcare facility. The list of tenants that have renewed are: Brighter Dental; Wellness Center (Dr. Swanekamp); Allied Vision; Edward Jones; Tindall Jewelers; Hair It Is; Cocoa Beach Tanning and Foxmoor Animal Hospital. The beauty of this revitalization is everyone is on the same page. We also love the fact Pennmark does not just lease space to anyone. They keep an open mind, but it has turned away potential tenants that “don’t help other tenants or don’t fit the demographic.” Town council is the redevelopment agency and my administration will continue to do everything we can to help with this revitalization. Businesses interested in leasing in Foxmoor should contact Robert Sichelstiel at sichelstiel@pennmarkproperties.com. Dave Fried is the Mayor of Robbinsville Township.
