September Marks Awareness Campaign to Fight Hunger Next month kicks off Hunger Action Month and for the third consecutive year, TASK will join anti-hunger advocates nationwide, spotlighting the chronic struggle millions of Americans have with food access. Created in 2008 by Feeding America, the largest US-based hunger-relief, advocacy and education organization, Hunger Action Month is dedicated to encouraging everyone to effectively implement ways to alleviate and eventually end hunger and food insecurity. Food access always matters, but at a time when more than half of New Jersey’s population – according to the US Census Bureau – have lost jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic, awareness is vital. While concern about food scarcity in the state has decreased since the beginning of the pandemic, still, nearly 700,000 New Jerseyans say they are concerned about where they will find their next meal. Already overwhelming, the number of families facing hunger and food insecurity is projected to increase, especially for children. According to “The Impact of the Coronavirus on Local Food Insecurity” report by Feeding America, food insecurity for New Jersey’s children is projected to increase to nearly 20 percent based on projected growth in unemployment and poverty. TASK fights hunger all year-round, but in September the city’s only soup kitchen takes added steps to spotlight this dilemma affecting nearly 40,000 Mercer County residents of which 10,000 are children. Since March when state-wide efforts began to stem the spread of COVID-19, the soup kitchen closed its main dining room and switched to serving meals to-go from its front door. Whether picking up a take-out meal at TASK’s main facility in Trenton or visiting one of its off-site meal services in a town nearby, TASK patrons receive handprepared meals that meet or exceed the USDA-recommended servings of dairy, fruit, vegetables, protein, and grains. Last year, TASK served more than 325,000 meals. “TASK advocates for anyone experiencing hunger and food insecurity,” said TASK Executive Director Joyce E. Campbell. “This year, however, with the many conversations on racial and economic injustice and coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, Hunger Action Month can put a spotlight on the challenges felt right here in our own backyard. Everyone is feeling the crunch of these times, but we can’t deny that disadvantaged communities have been the hardest hit.”  During Hunger Action Month the soup kitchen will host various events and activities to inform and spotlight

On September 10 - Hunger Action Day – don’t forget to wear orange which is the official color for hunger-relief. It is also the day city officials in Trenton will recognize the campaign with a proclamation. On September 17 TASK will acknowledge Food Waste Prevention Day which was designed in New Jersey to spotlight the tons of uneaten food that ends up in landfills, contributing to both hunger and environmental deterioration. Additionally, the soup kitchen has brought back its “30 Ways in 30 Days Hunger Action Calendar” – a road map to the many steps anyone can take to make a difference with daily acts that can contribute to the at-home fight against hunger and food insecurity. Here are a few of the calendar’s highlights: Sunday, September 13: Gather the family to learn how to decrease the amount of food waste in landfills. Watch the documentary “Wasted: The Story of Food Waste.” Check out TASK on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter for links to streaming. Tuesday, September 22: Tune in to TASK’s social media at 8pm for Hunger Action Month Trivia Night and a chance to win prizes. Look for us @ TASKSoupKitchen. otox for migraines. Stem cell injections to regenerate tissue and organs. Gummy Bears infused with THC. Platelet-Rich Plasma to treat conditions from sports injuries and wounds to hair loss from chemotherapy. These are just a few of the cutting-edge therapies used by Dr. Ronak Patel, the founder and medical director of Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute in Plainsboro. “Many of these treatments may come as a surprise to patients suffering from chronic pain, especially those who think that their pain — and poor quality of life — is something they have to endure, Dr. Patel notes. A double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, Dr. Patel focuses on treating pain in the back, neck, face, and joints as well as pain related to cancer and chemotherapy. With so many different pain-causing illnesses, injuries, and conditions, treatments must be carefully customized to fit the needs of each individual patient. Dr. Patel partners with orthopedists, physical and occupational therapists, and chiropractors to provide a variety of approaches and treatments. With

Regenerative Medicine/ Stem Cell Therapy. Regenerative medicine is a fastgrowing, highly developed treatment that helps the body heal or rebuild itself. Dr. Patel uses stem cell therapy to treat ailments, particularly low back or neck pain, caused by degenerative vertebral discs or joint pain in the shoulders, hips, or knees caused by osteoarthritis. The patient’s stem cells are removed, purified, concentrated, and injected into the injured or weakened tissue. Stem cell therapy can also speed recovery and help avoid surgery. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). A favorite treatment for sports injuries, PRP uses the patient’s blood to produce a platelet-rich plasma that targets a host of chronic and acute pain conditions, including muscle strain, arthritis, tendinosis, cartilage injuries, joint inflammation, and wound care. The treatment is also used in orthopedic and plastic surgery. By synthesizing platelets and releasing proteins, PRP can aid in generating new tissue. And it has helped chemotherapy patients grow back hair faster and thicker.

Cannabis Therapy. The legalization of medical marijuana has brought new treatment options. “We are very excited by the potential of cannabis-based treatments and we comply fully with New Jersey’s evolving regulations, says Dr. Patel. He uses a local dispensary to provide treatments, which include edibles such as gummy bears and cannabis-based rubbing and vaping oils. Minimally Invasive Therapy. Dr. Patel offers a wide variety of minimally invasive therapies. These include epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, and spinal cord stimulation for patients suffering from chronic neck and back pain stemming from herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis. His goal is to help his patients avoid surgery and at the same time regain functionality. Thanks to these and other game-changing treatments, pain levels can be greatly reduced or eliminated and quality of life enhanced. Says Dr. Patel, “Stop your pain. Start your life.

Taylor’s major competitor, Case’s, came on the scene in 1870, when George Washington Case, a farmer from Belle Mead created his own recipe for pork roll. Case’s says its recipe has not changed since that first batch in 1870. Now, 150 years later, the two are still going at it—much to the delight of pork roll lovers in New Jersey. They’ll get to celebrate that fact Sept. 5. Trenton Pork Roll Festival. Saturday, Sept. 5, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Trenton Social. 449 S. Many annual events have been cancelled already, due to the COVID19 pandemic. At press time, the following events were still scheduled to take place. Check with the organizer before heading out to ensure the event will proceed. New Jersey is currently under an executive order requiring all people wear masks when social distancing is not possible. Please be responsible when venturing out.

Pork roll, Taylor ham—whatever you call it, you’ll have a chance to celebrate New Jersey’s most iconic food product this month in Trenton. Since 2014, New Jersey’s capital city has hosted at least one festival in honor of pork roll, and 2020 won’t be an exception. Trenton Social postponed its annual May celebration, but will go forward with a Saturday, Sept. 5 date for the Trenton Pork Roll Festival at its South Broad Street location. Trenton Social’s pork roll party features food trucks, live music from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., a beer garden and full bar. P-Roll, a pork roll-themed superhero, will make an appearance once again. Tickets are $5, but there are several options to enhance your day, including a bike tour ($18, includes festival admission) and a VIP hospitality ticket ($48). Children 12 and under, as well as uniformed first responders and military, are free. The event is rain or shine. Trenton makes a natural place to celebrate pork roll, with the two major producers of the meat—Taylor and Case’s—still calling the city home. Pork roll was created in the mid19th century by John Taylor, a resident of Hamilton Square. movers & shakers Legendary DJ Jerry Blavat still spinning at 80 By Dan Aubrey

In the early 1950s Philadelphia, South Jersey, and the entire Delaware Valley were rocking with a television phenomenon that would change the region: “American Bandstand.” Every weekday afternoon scores of formally dressed teenagers gathered live at a Philadelphia studio on West Market Street to bring the newest rock ‘n’ roll sound and latest dance steps into any home that had a television antenna. That included one small house in South Philadelphia. “One day tuned in to a show called Bandstand and I saw these kids dancing, and I said I could dance like that. And I went to Bandstand and snuck in,” says Jerry Blavat about his first appearance as a Bandstand dancer. That was 67 years ago, in 1953, and since then the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame member and self-proclaimed “Geator with the Heater” has been the living presence of Philadelphia’s old time rock ‘n’ roll. As the performer, who recently turned 80, advises at the end of his weekly WXPN “Rock ‘n’ Roll and

Rhythm and Blues Express” radio show, “Keep on rocking, because you only rock once.” Blavat practices what he preaches by rocking the region with his weekly South Jersey dance party at his Margate club, special events—including an annual stop in Bordentown—and his own radio network that brings the golden days of rock ‘n’ roll to Trenton, Atlantic City, and Vineland via his Geator Gold Network. “I was a lonely kid,” says Blavat during a recent telephone interview about his long career, one that had its own rocks and rolls. “My father was a Jewish racketeer. And my mother was a Capuano,” he says, mentioning his mother’s maiden name as if describing an entity. If so, it was an Italian Catholic family strongly disapproving of his mother’s choice of husband. That tension, says Blavat, caused disruption. “My existence as a kid was being shifted around.” That meant moving between a house where a street-smart freewheeling father ran numbers and his mother’s hard-working grandparents laid

down the rules. “Then I found music,” he says. “In the middle of the night I would hear music, and it took away the loneliness.”

As he notes in his autobiography, thematically titled “You Only Rock Once,” there was also dance. “I learned to jitterbug at the Capuanos’, watching my mother, my aunt, and my uncles. Whenever they played an Artie Shaw record—or Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra —they would clear a space in the living room and get right down to it. I would do my best to imitate the grown-ups.” Eventually, he says, at around age 10 he started to become a good dancer and developed an ear for dance music that, he says, “would eventually fuel my career.” Then there was the Bandstand moment when his singer uncle and his group got a shot singing on the show. But for Blavat, it became all about the dancers. “Their energy, their vitality, the pure joy that presented itself in their movements made them immediately recognizable to me,” he says. “Seeing myself in them so clearly, I felt as though a bolt of lighting had hit me, and the words come pouring of me as if they had a mind of their own, ‘I want to be a dancer like that!’” Blavat says his way to Bandstand

After syndicating the show regionally and producing specialty albums, his move to television came when local TV personality Ed Hurst invited Blavat to lead dancers on his weekly “Summertime at the Pier,” a live show from Steel Pier in Atlantic City. That appearance, the success of his dance parties, and the good word to television producers by Dick Clark, who before moving Bandstand to Los Angeles in 1957 had become Blavat’s friend and ally, eventually led to the creation of Blavat’s own 1965 television dance show, “The Discophonic Scene.” Designed like a rock and roll dance party, Blavat danced on a riser among the other dancers and introduced songs and musical acts that performed live (rather than lip-sync). During the interview Blavat recalls the show’s opening and announces over the telephone, “Don’t dare leave that screen! This is the Discophonic Scene, the world of the yon teen. And here’s the teenage leader, the teenage greeter, ‘the Geator with the Heater.’” Blavat says the half-hour Saturday show sold out advertisers in the first two weeks and expanded to an hour on the third. The show also expanded from one day to weekday afternoons and eventually syndicated and renewed national attention to the Philadelphia music scene. It also gave Blavat the spotlight, and soon he was making guest television appearances on “The Monkees” and “The Mod Squad” and headed to Hollywood. And despite the time he spent in Los Angeles and the energy devoted to becoming a movie celebrity, this time his luck ran out. The result was a missed opportunity to renew his television show contract, build on personal performances, maintain attendance at dance clubs, and resolve his faltering marriage. He had also failed to confront the change in musical tastes that had been ushered in by the Woodstock and acid

rock generation. “I knew that I had to get back to Philadelphia to start all over again. It was obvious that I had made the biggest mistake of my life,” he says in his autobiography. He slowly began rebuilding his dances and performing with his Geatormen Group. Then in 1972 he purchased the former Elbow Room in Margate and turned it into Memories—and hit Geator gold. He says he chose the name because “if people were having fun, people were going to come back for the memories. And it worked. People want to relive the good times.” But something else also worked. With Pennsylvania’s “Blue Laws” restricting Philadelphia alcohol sales on Sunday and Atlantic City being in its pre-casino doldrums, Margate provided a quick drive solution for thirsty fun seekers and Memories—part of a strip of pubs and taverns—became a destination and helped Blavat reestablish himself. In addition to providing him with a base, it has become a weekly South Jersey dance party with a live radio broadcast. And while the separated father of four daughters may have rebuilt his nowsolid reputation on that move, as his warts-and-all book and his willingness to share during an interview show, there were times when his beloved music was nearly drowned out by static. That includes his alleged association with organized crime through his friendship with Angelo Bruno and others. And in the early 1990s Blavat was included in a New Jersey State investigation regarding organized crime’s impact on clubs and taverns in southern New Jersey. While Blavat answered questions during closed meetings with the commission, during a public session he cited his Fifth Amendment right to not answer. As Blavat notes in his book’s chapter “Trouble with the Law,” “That night, it was all over the news that Jerry Blavat took the Fifth and refused to answer any questions. I wasn’t concerned because I knew the whole thing was

bullshit. They were grandstanding at the taxpayer’s expense.” About his friendship with Bruno and other individuals involved with crime, Blavat says during the interview, “I grew up in a neighborhood where you knew everybody. You knew the priest and the baker. My dad was a racketeer.” Blavat adds that the persistent allegations came from competitors and the

perception that “he hangs with unsavory people” affected business deals and jobs. “I wasn’t in the mob,” he says. Then looking on his employment history and the current business problems related to COVID-19, he says, “There hasn’t been a career when there hasn’t been lulls, but the secret is that you have to believe in yourself.” But there are also highs, and while Blavat can’t boast that he’s part of the Hollywood royalty with whom he hobnobs, he can point to being a Philadelphia legend and a Congressional Award recipient for “expanding opportunities for All Americans through their own personal contributions, and who have set exceptional examples for young people through their successes in life.” And, in addition to his long term relationship with Keely Stahl, he can also talk about on-air endurance: He is live with his Margate dance parties on Fridays, broadcasts from WXPN on Saturdays, is on several regional stations daily, and hosts his “Talking with the Geator” on Facebook on Sundays. He is also planning his return to the Inlet restaurant in North Wildwood, a social distance-compliant Live Nations car concert at a Philadelphia stadium, and his annual oldies review at the Kimmel Center on the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia. Summing his life up, he says, “I found a passion that was music and dancing, and I passed that to people. I’m no different than anybody out there. I’m lucky that god has given me the ability to follow my dream. It’s that simple.”

Famed Atlanta duo pops up in Pennington The Pig + The Pit offers vegan BBQ and southern cuisine in Eclair Cafe location By Joe Emanski

The Pennington dining scene got a welcome jolt of energy on July 17 when The Pig + the Pit opened on North Main Street. Acclaimed Atlanta restaurateurs Doria Roberts and Calavino Donati are the couple behind the new restaurant that has popped up in the space recently occupied by Eclair Cafe. The Pig + the Pit, with its imaginative and eclectic menu of “vegan BBQ and southern cuisine,” is open for take-out Thursday through Saturday from 11 to 7 and Sunday from 11 to 5. Signature items include Chef Donati’s turkey poblano meatloaf with jalapeño tequila gravy and the Urban Reuben sandwich, made with hand-sliced pork shoulder rather than the traditional corned beef brisket. Which is not to say there isn’t brisket on the menu, because there is: in fact, The Pig + the Pit’s chopped smoked brisket, served with a choice of two sides, is one of the most popular items on the menu. Roberts, the Pig + the Pit’s baker, counts mini sweet potato pies and cornbread tres leches among her specialty offerings. Also featured on the menu are dishes like shrimp and grits, shrimp po’ boy and The Georgian, a sandwich featuring house-roasted turkey with peach poblano compote, greens, tomato and

goat cheese on toasted ciabatta. But perhaps most intriguing are The Pig + the Pit’s many vegan and vegetarian options, which are intended to appeal to meat eaters and non-meat-eaters alike. The blackeyed pea burger is housemade and can be ordered with or without cheese, while the Urban Reuben sandwich can be ordered with grilled tofu in place of pork shoulder. Barbecued jackfruit or tofu can be ordered in place of meat in the meatand-two-sides platter, and the portobello mushroom dinner is served on

a bed of dirty rice with sauteed green beans. Other vegetarian/vegan options include the roasted sweet potato sandwich and the blackeyed pea hummus appetizer served with chips. Roberts and Donati say that since Roberts is a vegetarian and Donati is an omnivore, their menus always have options for all kinds of eaters. “Usually, when we go out, one of us is eating a salad,” Roberts says. “We wanted our restaurants to be more accommodating to all dietary preferences for that reason. Everyone is welcome at our table.” ***

Roberts grew up in Trenton and a 1989 graduate of Princeton Day School. A basketball and softball star at PDS, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 before heading south to Atlanta to pursue a music career. The singer-songwriter has released several albums and spent many years on the road, performing with the Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, John Mayer and others. While in Atlanta, she met her wife, Donati, an accomplished chef who opened The Roman Lily Cafe in Atlanta’s Fourth Ward in 1996, and later together with Roberts opened the popular sandwich shop Urban Cannibals with several Atlanta locations. In 2008, Roberts took a break from her musical career to work together with Donati through their We Serve People Restaurant Group. With Donati as chef and Roberts as baker, the couple operated a number of dining venues in Atlanta, including Urban Cannibals, Madre + Mason (described as serving Latin American-Southern fusion cuisine) and Tipple and Rose Tea Parlor and Apothecary. In April 2019, Roberts’ mother, who still lived in this area, suffered a stroke. After Roberts spent months commuting to and from Atlanta to help care for her mother, she and Donati decided that it would be best to shut down their Atlanta venues and move to Mercer County. They settled in the area in December. As reported by Eater Atlanta in December, they had originally thought to port one of their existing concepts to this area, and Roberts says they spent the early part of 2020 scouting out locations in Mercer County. even signed letters of intent to lease a couple of locations in the area—they don’t say precisely where. In March, the pandemic hit, and the couple tabled their plans and waited to see how the crisis would affect the restaurant business. Then a different kind of opportunity presented itself: the option to “pop up” in the Eclair Cafe space in Pennington. Eclair Cafe owners Ron Suzuki and Marie-Mathilde Laplanche still hold the lease to the space at 20 N. Main St. in Pennington, but they had closed their cafe early on in the pandemic, and by June had still not reopened. They offered Roberts and Donati the use of the Eclair Cafe kitchen to launch a concept of their own without the risk of a long-term lease. They accepted the offer and quickly came up with the concept of The Pig + the Pit. “We had done a little research and realized there wasn’t any Southern or Barbecue around, so we thought if we opened something in a kitchen, that’s what we would do,” Roberts says. “Both of us being in Atlanta for so long, it was a natural transition for us (to open that kind of restaurant).” Donati says the “omnivore” menu takes some inspiration from the couple’s own eating lifestyle. “Because we eat like this at home, it’s not challenging at all to find interesting ways to present (vegetarian and nonvegetarian) dishes with similar textures and flavor profiles,” she says. “I work with a lot of spice and have several proprietary blends, and that’s really the key to make sure vegans and vegetarians aren’t settling for flavorless substitutes.” Roberts was not always a vegetarian, so she consults with Donati on the texture of the vegan and vegetarian dishes. They kitchen tested with whole food ingredients, like jackfruit, to see what worked best in the context of barbecue. The items that worked out best are the ones that have made it onto the menu. Donati and Roberts planned the July 17 Pennington opening of The Pig + the Pit as a soft launch. “We thought, a nice little town, a nice little leisurely start,” Donati says. Word of the new restaurant spread quickly on social media, however, and on their first weekend, they found themselves working hard to keep up with the large number of orders that were coming through their website ordering system. “We definitely thought we would have a little more time to ease ourselves into the situation,” Donati says. “To see her open up the computer screen and just have a list of orders coming through and not stopping—it was definitely a surprise.” It took them a few weeks to really get into a groove, but they have gradually worked out most of the kinks over their first month, well enough to expand open hours to four days a week from the original two. They do occasionally disable the ordering system if demand gets high, and when that happens, they encourage customers to keep checking to see when they are taking orders again. High demand has also affected the

way they have had to collaborate in the smallish kitchen of Eclair Cafe. Some days, Roberts has had to cede oven space over to Donati so there is enough room to prepare all the proteins they intend to serve that day. “[On the first weekend], she smoked a lot of brisket, and somehow she still ran out of brisket, so she needed to make more brisket, and she needed to use the ovens for chicken and some other things,” Roberts says. No oven space meant no place to bake Roberts’ scones or sweet potato pies. But she says they have worked in small kitchens before, and have gotten good at making changes on the fly. When she can’t use the ovens, she makes no-bake treats like strawberry shortcake in a cup. “We’re kind of used to having to switch gears, and we’re not too precious about that kind of stuff,” Roberts says. “We’re both artists in that way. I’m a musician, and Chef Calavino’s an artist with food, and we just say, ‘OK, we have to move on to the next thing.’ We think on our feet pretty quickly.” *** Though Donati lived in a number of places growing up, she considers Atlanta her hometown. She is a selftrained chef who quit school at 17 to travel around the country, at one point settling in Key West for a year. The Roman Lily Cafe, named for her grandparents Roman and Lily, has been described as a “trailblazing” restaurant by Atlanta lifestyle writer Richard L. Eldredge. The restaurant has been credited with helping to transform the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood of East Atlanta into a thriving community. Donati’s grilled turkey poblano meatloaf with jalapeño tequila gravy was on her menu at her first restaurant. “It was the reason I had two-hour waits even though I opened in one of the most dangerous parts of town,” she says. “I’ve served it to the late Congressman John Lewis, and President Jimmy Carter…I’ve carried it with me to almost every concept I’ve had, and it will always hold a special place on my menus.” Things were going well for Donati and Roberts up until the bottom fell out of the housing market in 2007. They

Roberts says her sweet potato pie is special to her because it is her mother’s recipe. “I called her on Thanksgiving 12 years ago for the recipe because it was my first Thanksgiving with Chef Calavino, and I wanted to impress her with something since she was cooking everything else and I figured I couldn’t miss with that. And I was right!” she says. In addition to doing the baking, Roberts also makes The Pig + the Pit’s pickles, does their social media and website, and helps Donati with prep work in the kitchen. Because Roberts’ mother is immunocompromised, they work side by side, just the two of them, to minimize risk from COVID-19. They have, however, been cultivating relationships with area farmers and farm markets, including Strawberry Hill Farm in Chesterfield and Kerr’s Kornstand in Hopewell. “We always work closely with farmers,” Roberts says. “We didn’t want to come in as interlopers, but we’re slowly introducing ourselves, letting them know that we’re serious about what we do, and if they have produce we can get, we’ll use it.” With The Pig + the Pit being a popup restaurant, Roberts says a lot of customers have been asking if they only plan to be open for a limited time. “The answer,” Roberts says, “is ‘as long as people keep coming, we’ll be here!’” The Pig + the Pit, 20 N. Main St., Pennington NJ 08534. Facebook: The Pig + the Pit.

say they lost everything in the housing crash, including the restaurant. In 2009, they were able to make a return with Urban Cannibals Bodega and Bites, a soup and sandwich shop so modest they were pressing sandwiches on George Foreman Grills. “We thought sandwiches and soup were good recession food, so we thought we would just do that and wait out the economy,” Roberts says. “That’s when I learned how to bake.” The kitchen then was about the same size as Eclair Cafe, which is one reason they have felt at home in Pennington despite the confined space. As one might guess by the name, the Urban Reuben was on the menu at Urban Cannibals. The sandwich was so well regarded that it earned the duo a 2011 appearance on a Food Network TV show called Meat and Potatoes. “We thought (the invitation) was a joke at first, but it turned out to be real!” Roberts says. “We were making all of our sandwiches on George Foreman Grills at the time, and actually used one for the show, but, at the end of the day of filming, the crew urged us to get an industrial panini press because ‘our lives were going to change.’” The day after the episode aired, they went into the shop early so they could make extra pork shoulder in preparation for a crowd. They found that there was already a line down the street. “It was one of our most popular sandwiches for the seven years we had that space,” Roberts says. ***
