The Anchor House annual 500-mile bike ride fundraiser has been reimagined into a virtual experience to cater to the current restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s Anchor House Virtual Ride for Runaways will mark the 42nd year of the massive fundraising event that brings in more than $500,000 for the year for the Trentonbased organization. “Everybody has their own goal,” COO of Anchor House Foundation Kathy Drulis said. “As much as they love biking and they love what we do, they so believe in Anchor House so that’s what has always made our event so successful.” This year’s change has brought many veteran participants back as well as new ones. Mark Smith has taken part in Anchor House’s traditional 500mile trek for 30 years. To commemorate his years of commitment, Smith, a veterinarian at Hopewell Veterinary Group Inc., set a personal goal to raise $30,000, or $1,000 for every year he has participated. As of June 23, Smith raised $25,125 and pledged that if his donors help him raise within $1,000 of his goal that he will make up the difference. He has sent out 240 letters requesting donations. New off ice building under way Developer breaks ground on medical building in Forrestal Center BY SARA HASTINGS

As businesses around the state shut down in early April in response to a growing pandemic, one new project was just getting started. Construction on 8 Forrestal Road South, on Princeton University’s Forrestal campus across from the Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Cen-

ter campus, began on April 21. The developer, 11 Forrestal Road Associates LLC, had originally broken ground on the site in 2017, explains managing partner Vic Angeline. “There were some environmental problems relating to the road that was put in for Life Time Athletic [at 7 Forrestal Road South] that had to be cleaned up before we could continue building there,” he says. “We were going to start April 1,” Angeline says, “but we didn’t start until April 21 because we wanted to make sure we were only doing out-

side work.” There are currently two people working on the 5.33acre lot. “It’s all outside and very limited manpower,” he says. “We’re also doing all of our project meetings by Zoom.” Angeline expects inside work to begin in the fall. With social distancing guidelines in place, only one trade works at a time in a given space, so, for example, working on carpentry, electricity, and plumbing has to occur sequentially rather than concurrently. Accordingly, the finish date See FORRESTAL, Page 5

The first tee of Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, stood empty April 29, on what should have been Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am day. With a large gallery of fans looking on, Plainsboro’s Raymond Jin, the 17-year-old winner of Wells Fargo and First Tee’s Succeeding Together essay contest for 2020, would have hit the opening drive of his round with the PGA Tour pro of his choice. Instead, because of COVID-19, the High School North junior will have to wait one more year for the moment. Jin will join the winner of the 2021 contest in golfing with the PGA Tour pros of their choice on May 5, 2021, at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Washington, D.C., where the tournament is relocating for one year as Quail Hollow Club hosts the 2021 President’s Cup. “While I would love to have bragging rights and tell See JIN, Page 8

I didn’t know what I don’t know BILL SANSERVINO FROM THE EDITOR

prised me. I thought I knew about the plight of Black people in our country, but the more I educated myself, the more I realized that I know almost nothing. I had heard of Alabama Gov. and failed presidential candidate George Wallace, but had no idea about his legacy of racism. I knew about the movie Selma, but I didn’t know the full story about Bloody Sunday and the Selma to Montgomery Marches in 1965. I read about the Great Migration, (where Black people from the South went to northern cities in search of the promise of jobs and better treatment), but I was shocked to find out about the Red Summer of 1919, where white rioters attacked and killed Black people, because they felt they had taken their jobs. Those are just a few of the things I found out, and they’re just the tip of the iceberg. I urge everyone to learn more about our country’s history, especially as it relates to the treatment of non-whites. Hopefully you’ll come to better understand their grievances. And through understanding, we grow. Hopefully these learnings will guide more relevant conversations and lead us to positive changes.

When George Floyd died on May 25 after a Minnesota police officer knelt on his neck for almost 9 minutes, it turned our already tumultuous COVID-19-infected world upside down. I stand behind the efforts of all of the protesters fighting to change systemic racism within our society, especially against Black people. In my 30 years as journalist, I’ve come to know many good police officers. Men and women who care deeply about the communities they serve, and their efforts should not go unrecognized. That being said, I also believe there’s clearly a disparity between the way Black and white people are treated by law enforcement, and significant change is needed regarding how officers are trained and held accountable when responding to calls. But what can I do to help? That’s the question I struggle with. Scientific studies have shown that humans are born with the propensity to discriminate against those who are different from them. Our saving grace, and what separates us from lesser animals, is our intelligence. It gives us the ability to overcome our biases and hatreds. RIDE continued from Page 1 Looking to this year’s virtual ride, Smith, 67, knows it will be a very different experience. Riding alone or with one friend will be more difficult than when riding with a large group, as it psychologically wears the rider down. The friendships that have been built over years of participation will also be missed, he said. Regardless of this year’s switch, Smith saw the pandemic as no excuse to forget about the needs of the youth population helped by Anchor House. Participants have a profile on the official Anchor House Virtual Ride for Runaways website, where they can display the funds they have raised and what their monetary and distance goals are, as well as options for posting blog entries of their participation. The site will remain up throughout the length of the ride and the year, so donors may continue to contribute funds towards Anchor House. Involvement may be different this year but it offers new options to join for those who haven’t been able to participate in the past. Along with the decision to forego the group aspect of the ride and move everything remote, the Anchor House team created two more options for participation. This year, participants can choose the regular 500-mile bike ride, the new 250mile bike ride or a new 100-mile walk. Over the past 41 years of the event, the 500-mile ride has been done over the course of a week. This year, the event has been expanded to last six weeks—

43 days—to accommodate both new and veteran participants. The three options and six-week plan for participants allows for more flexible involvement, including a mother and daughter from Lawrence. Cheryl Curbishley has participated in six Anchor House rides over the years, along with some of her family members, and is back again this year. She is set to complete the 500-mile ride, while her daughter, Gwyn, is signed on to complete the 250-mile ride. Although Gwyn has participated in the 500-mile ride in the past with her family, the option to do the shorter ride was what fit with her schedule this year. “I feel like it’s more accessible for people to sign up for the six-week challenge because of the virtual ride…you’re not going to have to take a week off of work,” Cheryl Curbishley said. “You can do an hour ride in the evening after your job. You can do that a couple times a week and then do a long ride on Saturday and Sunday.” A middle school language arts teacher in West Windsor-Plainsboro, Cheryl has known of the Anchor House ride since 1991, when she was dating her now-husband, who was a participating cyclist then and has ridden other times over the years. Being involved with Anchor House allows people to feel connected to helping the vulnerable children that may not have advocates and are living in unimaginable situations, Curbishley said. Anchor House Inc. serves abused, runaway, homeless, aging out and at-

risk youth and their families in the Mercer County and Central New Jersey areas. Emergency shelter, transitional living, homelessness housing and street outreach programs, along with opportunities to learn life skills and receive school-based counseling and parent support services are initiatives that need the funding raised by the ride. The decision to go virtual was made jointly between the Anchor House Foundation Ride Committee, the foundation’s Board of Directors and the executive director of Anchor House. Changing the platform of the ride while keeping to the same start date as previous years was seen as the best option to keep the community of bikers engaged and safe. The ride kicks off on July 11, allowing participants to sign up until the day before. By making this year’s ride an option of different route lengths over a longer period of time, the goal was to encourage more individuals to join who may have helped out in previous years or shied away from the strenuous 500 miles traditionally completed in a week. “This is a unique situation,” President of Anchor House Foundation Board of Directors Thaddeus Mikulski said. “It appears that we are attracting some people who might not otherwise have been involved.” Although Anchor House intends to continue their ride fundraiser normally in coming years, they do intend to learn from this year’s altered event, said Mikulski, an attorney in Pennington.

The six-week window is meant to create an option so that participants don’t need to take off from work and may complete their miles as they please, making aggressive training not as necessary as previous years. Although the group aspect of the ride will not be the same Anchor House is working to make sure participants still know how much they are helping. Lawn signs and painted rocks are being worked on by Anchor House and its youth to help spread the word around Mercer County of the time and efforts the riders and walkers are contributing. Whether on their own, with family members, outside or indoors, the Anchor House ride is on its way to raising its funding for the year. Every rider or walker is asked to raise a certain amount depending on their participation. Every cyclist riding 500 miles is asked to raise $750. Cyclists riding 250 miles are asked to raise $500. Walkers or runners are asked to complete 100 miles and raise $200. “I think we’re hoping that again, the awareness is raised for the issues that our young people are facing, the programs and services that Anchor House offers and how vital they are to our community,” said McNear, the Anchor House executive director. “We are really hoping in the midst of everything that’s going on, really looking for an opportunity to provide a little bit of normalcy, if you will. So for those who’ve been going on the ride 30 plus years you become used to that, one or two years you become used to it…that sense of family.”

FORRESTAL continued from Page 1 for the project was pushed back by four months, to the third quarter of 2021. “It’s going to take 16 months to build instead of 12 months just because we don’t know what’s going to happen,” he says The state-of-the-art medical office space will be a sister building to 10 Forrestal Road South, which opened in July, 2014, and was also developed by Angeline and his partners, Dan Siegel, Vince Visceglia, and John Visceglia. That two-story, 40,000-square-foot building has been fully leased with 10 tenants in place since its opening. The new building at 8 Forrestal Road South will also be two stories and 40,000 square feet. “It has a similar architecture that the Forrestal campus approved that will kind of marry the architecture of 10 Forrestal Road South and Life Time,” Angeline says. “The university is very much about the symbiotic relationship of buildings.” “Our other building has had 100 percent occupancy since 2014. So we’re basically copying that same concept,” Angeline says. Currently two tenants have signed on for a total 11,000 square feet. Angeline, who has worked on the development of 35 medical buildings across three states, notes that all of the buildings are 95 to 100 percent occupied. And he says he is not concerned about the growth of telemedicine reducing the demand for medical office space. “These buildings near a hospital campus are not going to be ones where telemedicine is run,” he says. “Most of the doctors in these buildings are specialists” — including plastic surgeons, fertility specialists, and endocrinologists — whose practices “don’t really lend themselves to telemedicine.” The spaces at 8 Forrestal Road South will be built to tenants’ specifications. “We are turn-keying most spaces for everyone,” Angeline explains. “Before they sign a lease, we’re telling them to the penny what it’s going to cost them.” The costs of any over-

Leases can be for spaces as small as 2,000 square feet and as large as 20,000 square feet, but Angeline expects the completed facility to have eight tenants averaging 5,000 square feet each. Kim Kretowicz of Colliers International is the broker for the property. And while the space doesn’t come cheap — rents start at $27 per square foot, excluding taxes, insurance, and common area maintenance — Angeline notes that it is less expensive than space at the hospital campus across the street. “Our price is significantly lower than the hospital building campus price,” he says, adding that rent is about 25 percent lower. “We don’t have the huge expense of parking decks and everything else, since we have all grade parking. And we bought this land with options quite a while ago, so our land price is not as high as the hospital land price.” “Even though we’re in a difficult time frame we’re pretty confident that by the time we get that building up we’ll be substantially if not fully leased,” Angeline says.

A Guide to Our Virtual Kitchen & Bath Design Process As we are all working from home together, this may be good time to virtually plan out your upcoming kitchen or bath projects. You’d be surprised how much you can accomplish working remotely with one of our design professionals. Start with a Project “To Do” List You’ve been watching the home improvement shows, looking at magazines and doing some research online. You may even have put together an inspiration file of all the things you would love to have in your new kitchen or bathroom. Where do you go from here? First, make a list of what to change in your kitchen or bath area. Following is a brief checklist of what to consider: Are you... • Working with a new or existing floor plan? • Adding new appliances, lighting, sinks and faucets? • Changing flooring and if so, will other areas change as well? • Installing new tile in the backsplash or in the bath area? • Taking out the tub or enlarging the shower area? Try to have some idea of cabinetry and countertop choices, even though this is not something you need to finalize before talking with a design professional. What Can Our Design Pros Do For You? Once you’ve done your research, you are ready to complete our brief questionnaire. Upon receiving your information, one of our experienced designers will contact you to discuss your ideas and wishes. Next, a design concept is created for your space and we’ll also give you an estimate range of what your project may cost. We look forward to helping you get started on your project. School is out and normally at this time we would be busy packing and getting ready to head out for our summer vacations. This year we need to add masks, hand sanitizer, and Lysol wipes to our packing list. People are still traveling this summer, however they are keeping closer to home so they don’t have to fly, either drive trips or train trips. Hotels are taking extra precautions from contactless check-ins, to limited housekeeping and supplying masks and other necessities. CLIA, the Cruise Line International Association just announced today a voluntarily stop to US cruises until September 15th. This is being done in an abundance of caution and to ensure all the new procedures for passenger’s health and safety can be enacted. For more information you can visit my website and click the section marked for Covid-19. You will also find information on updated cancellations for cruise lines, which islands and resorts are open and what the required procedures are for entrance. Summer travel is more concentrated around locations within driving distance or by train. There are many great destinations within driving distance from our area, including several national parks. Some of my favorite destinations are the Smoky Mountains, Acadia National Park, Lake George and the Finger Lakes. A sample package traveling by train (or self-drive) could be a trip to see the magnificent Niagara Falls. For more summer ideas and to book travel, contact us. And if you are not ready to take a trip in 2020, then we can make your vacation dreams come true for 2021. Next year is my 10 year Cruise Planners anniversary and my husband and I will be

JIN continued from Page 1 my friends I played golf with Tiger Woods, what I really want to take away from my experience at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship is the ability to meet golfers I’ve been watching for most of my life on TV,” Jin said. “I’m looking forward to interacting with and learning from them, and connecting with people from all walks of life through the tournament.” The Succeeding Together essay contest is open to more than 30,000 participants of First Tee, a youth development organization. Jin is a member of First Tee of Greater Trenton. First Tee’s stated mission is to prepare kids for new challenges by building their confidence, resilience and inner strength through golf and programming based on nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. “It’s great that First Tee and Wells Fargo recognize the spirit of community that is so important to me, even in the way this contest works and the opportunities it creates for people like myself,” he said. “While I know it wasn’t possible for me to play this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I can’t wait to represent that same spirit at next year’s event.” Jin said that he knew he was a Succeeding Together contest finalist, but didn’t know he’d won until he received a video from Wells Fargo

April 1. Sitting at his laptop, he watched 2019 Wells Fargo Championship winner Max Homa deliver the good news while his mom recorded his reaction (see below). “I had a chance to read your winning essay and must say, I was really impressed,” Homa told Jin in the video. “Whether you choose me or not, I’m looking forward to meeting you in person in 2021 at the Wells Fargo Championship in Washington, D.C.” Jin’s essay was selected from entries representing 43 different chapters of First Tee in 25 different states. In his winning essay, Jin shared how First Tee’s core value of perseverance helped him mature as he cared for his mother during her breast cancer treatment and allows him to excel in golf— a sport defined not by mistakes, but by overcoming them. His essay pays homage to 1913 U.S. Open winner Frances Oimet— considered the father of amateur golf because of his rise from workingclass roots to excel in a sport primarily played then by the wealthy. The same desire to broaden opportunities for all students in Trenton led Jin to create his own nonprofit in 2019 called Young Leaders of America. It creates mentorship opportunities for underserved youth with professionals in business, the arts, and sports. He’s also involved in WeCare, a student-led nonprofit that has built a

During COVID-19, WeCare has raised nearly $41,000 for local first responders, senior centers and other groups on the front lines of the pandemic. With schools closed, Jin launched an online mentorship program to keep his First Tee chapter connected while the members can’t meet on the

golf course. And to lift community spirit and morale, Jin, an award-winning violinist, organized a virtual music concert. Ed Benson, executive director of First Tee of Greater Trenton, said Jin, who joined in 2014, is the chapter’s first Succeeding Together contest winner. “Raymond is an incredible leader and mentor to our junior participants,” Benson said. “He has a big heart and is always thinking of others and how he can contribute to the organizations he belongs to. He’s a gem, and will be successful in whatever he chooses to do in life.” Robert Connelley, First Tee of Greater Trenton’s program director and the golf coach, said, “Raymond is definitely a model First Tee participant among his peers and our younger participants and lives his life by our nine core values.” Introduced to First Tee by a friend of his mother, Jin said the chapter has transformed him from a shy follower to confident leader who hopes to find business success and continue lifting others through mentorships so they can achieve their dreams. “First Tee’s nine core values provide me an outline to follow for improving my character for the better,” he said. “I chose to follow that path and see where it would take me.” This story has been reprinted and edited with the permission of the Wells Fargo Stories website (stories.wf.com).

community forum West Windsor Police chief decries racism Yesterday, I received a message from a young lady who messaged the police department to tell me that she is scared for her life and scared for her dad, her brother and her boyfriend. I have to say this message made me so sad. It made me hurt inside that the actions of someone in a profession whose very nature is to protect all and to serve the community broke that trust, committed this horrific act and sent a shockwave of anger and fear, which reached this young girl in West Windsor. She went on to ask what we were doing to make sure this did not happen here and what we could do to improve community relations. At this point, I was proud to say that as a police officer for 31 years and the chief of police, I was confident in the men and women of the West Windsor Police Department. I was confident because we have spent a lifetime being a part of the community and making community policing the focus of our mission. I want our history to speak for itself. I want our social media over time to

show how our officers truly care about all members of the community and have been there for them regardless of the situation. I have personally developed relationships with our religious communities and consider the leaders of the over 13 religious organizations in town my personal friends. We have stood side by side with them in laughter and celebration and stood in front of them in times of trouble. I have also met with our African American Parent Support Group and have had serious conversations throughout the years about the police and its relationship with African American youth in West Windsor. We have worked hard to make sure our officers are seen as helpers and friends and this effort is ongoing and constantly evolves. I am thankful for the wisdom from both Joy (Horton) and Latoya (Edwards), who are always welcome for coffee and a discussion on what we can do better. We pride ourselves in well-trained professional officers who exemplify courage, knowledge and integrity.

These words are sewn into every West Windsor patch and sewn into the fabric of each and every officer. Training is ongoing and never ends. In fact, training for our officers is a living, breathing life force, which grows and evolves each and every year. Learning never stops. Whether it’s a quick lesson at briefing, an online training video and test or a training class, this learning continues. I am confident that this would never have happened in West Windsor because of the training of these officers and their respect for all life. Our officers are masters at de-escalation. When these dedicated men and women, who have faced COVID-19 each and every day without regard to their own safety and families, arrive on the scene, people breathe a sigh of relief because they know help has arrived. We have already had roll call discussions on this horrific event, and I have attached the words from one of my sergeants about this training: “So I sat down this morning with six young officers when we were going on duty to talk about George Floyd and what happened. I solicited from them their opinions before giving them my opinion. My idea was to get their thoughts and then really give them an education on right/wrong, tactics, procedures, ethics and just plain caring for your fellow man, no matter what the circumstances. “The conversation lasted over an hour and a half, and I was surprised by their statements and thoughts. Not one of the young officers could find an inkling of justification. Each was appalled and embarrassed for how poorly some people represent our profession. “Whereas I thought I was going to have to give some life’s lessons to the young ones, I didn’t have to. But, being me, I took the opportunity to still give the life’s lessons to reinforce what they already knew. “What happened to Floyd is truly tragic and could always be avoided. Standing around and doing nothing is just as bad as being the ignorant weak person that takes a life. But I am certain that the young officers that I work with know better, would act differently and will keep passing that down to others throughout their careers. “A sad day for everyone. There are no winners, only losers. But a proud moment for me this morning.” I am truly sorry for George Floyd and his family. I can promise you this agency will continue to train and continue to be the protectors of this community and more importantly be part of its family. I am always available for anyone who would like to meet and would like to discuss any issues. I have always had my door open for a coffee to anyone who would like one. I hope this helps explain to those who worry what I see and why I am not worried about the men and women of West Windsor Police and their interactions. Robert Garofalo Garofalo is chief of the West Windsor Police Department

West Windsor Democrats pledge to fight racism We, members and officers of the West Windsor Democratic Club and Democratic Committee, are deeply saddened by the documented and recurring instances of police brutality and racism that plague our society. We take particular pride in the diversity and tolerance which drew many of us to this community. At the same time, we know that we can and must do better. We pledge to support State and local efforts to fight racism in our community and build on the values of kindness and empathy by taking the following concrete steps: 1. To enhance recruitment of black residents to join and become active members of the West Windsor Democratic Club; 2. To speak at school board meetings, write letters to the Board and Administration, and organize petitions to urge the West Windsor - Plainsboro Regional School District to reconsider its decision to place armed officers in our schools; 3. To petition the West Windsor Plainsboro School District and the State Department of Education to enhance and deepen the school curriculum as it pertains to African-American history, including but not limited to the many tragic instances of institutional racism, residential redlining, and mob violence that have hurt and impacted African-Americans; 4. To support efforts to provide training to our police officers and Township employees to enhance sensitivity and fight implicit and explicit bias and hold West Windsor Township and our elected officials to the highest standards of integrity regarding sensitivity and explicit bias. 5. To never knowingly hold any of our events at or patronized businesses which permit or enable degradation of any group of people; 6. To listen, sympathize, involve and actively be anti-racist in all that we do. Kristin Epstein Epstein is chair of the West Windsor Democratic Committee.
