A Whole School Approach To Food
Schools and teachers play a vital role in promoting healthy eating habits and delivering key nutrition messages to the children in their care.
Schools are an excellent setting to encourage and provide healthy foods and snacks throughout the day and promote consistent messages to children and their families about healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
Developing session plans and educating children within the classroom around practical food and growing activities can be linked to curriculum areas within Curriculum for Excellence.
This Nutrition Resource Catalogue is intended to help and support teachers and schools develop a shared understanding of nutrition, health and wellbeing and responsibility of all. It aims to help all those working with children and young people in an educational setting to plan learning and teaching approaches and move towards embedding food activities and nutrition lesson plans into the classroom.
“Encouraging children to have an understanding of the importance of good nutrition and developing healthy eating habits so they can live healthier, longer lives”

Facts about fruit juice
Fruit juices, such as orange juice are a good source of vitamin C.
However, they also contain natural sugars and acids, which can cause tooth decay, sensitivity and even gum disease overtime.
When we drink fruit juice, the sugar in the juice reacts with the bacteria in our mouths to produce an acid that can wear away the protective enamel on our teeth.
From 5 years old, children can be given undiluted fruit juice or smoothies. But it’s best to stick
to no more than 1 glass (about 150 ml) a day and it’s best to serve fruit juice and smoothies at mealtimes (rather than between meals) this helps reduce the risk of tooth decay.
