Summer fun close to home

Summer revelers often take to the skies, rails and waves to embark on a vacation adventure. With the kids out of school and relaxed hours at the workplace, individuals and families generally find that summer is the ideal time to plan a getaway. For those who find they don’t have the funds this year, or simply prefer to stay closer to home, there are likely many different local events to enjoy instead. Many people will be making this summer the year of the staycation. With the average price of gasoline hov- ering around the $4 mark, according to the AAA Auto Group, you may

be among the individuals planning to keep vacation and weekend activities limited to a certain radius around your house. What many people seldom realize is that the warm-weather season is a prime time for local offerings from different organiza- tions in the community -many of which are low-

cost and nearby. Oftentimes, all it takes is thumbing through the “Where to Go” section of the newspaper to find a host of dif- ferent community offerings happening in the weeks to come. Chances are your neighborhood is hosting one or more of these different types of community events. • Fireworks

display: Whether for Independence Day or just to mark the start of a summer weekend, towns often host vibrant fireworks displays. Coastal towns may have them at the beach or boardwalk area, while inland areas may have a specific field or town center location where they can be observed. • Carnival: You need not travel to the theme park several miles away to enjoy a bit of chills and thrills. There may be one or several carnivals taking place nearby this year. Many churches host a carnival to raise funds. There also may be county fairs that Cont. on page 8

fea- ture their share of thrill rides and carnival test-of-skill games. Of course, the carnival food that goes with the event is also something to look forward to. • Park activities: From hiking excursions to garden tours, the private or government-subsidized parks may issue an events schedule with many different activities. Some have theater under the stars or campout movie nights. Others may have wine- and cheese-tasting soirees. These parks may have exhi- bition centers that can be visited any time of the year. • Summer camps: Many childcare centers and other orga-

nizations offer summer camp programs. Research this option early on so you can ensure a place for your child should you choose to sign up. • Food festivals: Towns often host different food festi- vals where local vendors can put their wares on dis- play and happy residents can sample to their hearts’ delight. Concerts: The summer season is certainly one for concerts. If you don’t happen to live right near a sports arena or another music venue, you may be able to enjoy local bands at clubs and restaurants. Some towns also have a performance

stage where they in- vite performers to play week after week. Who knows, your favorite musician may show up for an acoustic or intimate performance night. • Breakfasts and brunches: Different organizations host fundraising food events. The entire family can eat out at a fraction of the cost of going to a restaurant and benefit a good cause in the process. • Street fairs and block parties: Part of the fun of summer is getting outdoors and socializing in the community. Street fairs with foods on a stick and even neighborhood-based block parties enable you to get to-

gether and enjoy a little fun really close to home. • Tours and parades: Although parades often coincide with major holidays, some towns host carnival-type parades for the community. Children may be able to ride on a fire truck or explore the workings of a police cruiser. There are plenty of enjoyable activities that could be taking place right in your own backyard this summer. Consult the newspaper, online bulletins or a commu- nity newsletter to keep abreast of the different events that may be coming your way.

First-time camping basics The Outdoor Foundation reports that roughly 40 million Americans go camping in a given year. Typi- cal campers go on five camping trips per year, trav- eling an average of 191 miles from their home to the campground. Campers include friends on their trips 70 percent of the time, and hiking is the most popular camping trip activity. Camping is a popular activity, but many curious would-be campers do not know where to get started. It can be tempting to purchase all of the gear needed and trek out in the woods to give it a try. But if camping is not all you

expected it to be, you have just made a costly investment in a lot of equipment you are unlike- ly to use again. Instead of jumping right in, first try to learn as much about camping as possible. Do your homework, learn- ing about various camping styles and which ones you prefer. Does the idea of rent-

ing a recreational vehicle sound more inviting than sleeping in a tent? Would you prefer a campground with showers, toilets and other amenities or is roughing it in the great outdoors more appealing? Once prospective campers are able to find their camping path, they can explore all of the possibilities and

give it a trial run. Test the waters There’s bound to be a camping enthusiast in your midst. Find a friend or family member who enjoys camping out and find out if you can join him or her on his or her next trip. Take advantage of this per- son’s supplies (you may need to purchase nominal equipment, such as a backpack and sleeping bag) and expertise. Such trips can provide some firsthand experience, and friends can offer advice on the keys to successful camping. It is generally easier to learn the ropes Cont. on page 13

First time camping...

from someone who has experience choos- ing campsites and pitching tents, and this person also can offer suggestions about gear. How rugged are you? The definition of camping varies from camper to camper. For some, camping must include sleeping on a bedroll strewn out under the stars, while others may appreciate a few more luxuries on their camping ex- cursions, like the running water or equipment offered at a campsite or park. Still, others do not want to leave the perks of home at home, preferring the comfortable living of a recreational

Continued from page 11

vehicle. Nothing can end a camping excursion more quickly than discomfort and not enjoying the experience. It is better to figure out in advance just how rough you want things to be. Rent before buying Rent camping equipment to test out the gear you have in mind. This will give you an idea of everything from the sizes of tents to the type of cookware you may need. Renting is a less expensive approach for those who plan to camp sparingly. If your first trip inspires a genuine love of camping, then you can purchase equipment. You

can always begin with the basics and then expand as you find new gear that will enhance your camping experienc- es, asking camping enthusiasts and experts for rec- ommendations on everything from gear to campsites and more. Pointers for beginners The first time you go camping on your own you will likely be a bit nervous. When looking for a campsite, find a level ground that is high up. You do not want to be rolling down a slope or find that the tide has come in and you’re now floating inside your tent. But choose a spot with a nearby water supply as well. You

will need it for cooking and cleaning up. Water is heavy to carry, so you do not want to have to transport it too far. Never light a fire inside of your tent. Keep the fire for cooking and warmth away from sleeping quarters for safety’s sake. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, even inside a ventilated tent. Never leave a campfire burning unattended. Camping is a popular pastime and an activity tai- lor-made for warmer weather. But beginners should learn the ropes and test their equipment before invest- ing too much time and money.

Safety tips for outdoor

The warm weather is finally here, so it’s time to get ready for that first backyard barbecue bash. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organi- zation, offers these important tips for a safe, seamless summer soiree -- try saying that three times quickly! Outdoor gas barbecues • Before firing up the grill for the first time, carefully inspect burners and burner tubes for blockages due to dirt, grease, insects or rust build-up. Clean or replace any blocked parts

with certified replacement parts (or have a licensed technician do it). • Check for cracked, brittle or leaking hoses by apply- ing a 50/50 solution of soap and water to hoses and fittings. Turn on the main gas or propane valve while leaving burners off. Any leaks will show up as bubbles. Replace any damaged hoses or fittings. • Propane cylinders must be inspected and re-quali- fied every 12 years in the United States. A date stamp on the cylinder indicates

17 - AUGUST 2014

when it was last qualified. Do not use a rusty or damaged cylinder. If in doubt, replace your tank. • Keep grills and barbecues away from combustible materials such as fences, trees, buildings, awnings and carports. • No matter how hard it’s raining, never use a barbe- cue in a garage. Decorative lighting • It’s time to remove the holiday lights. These lights are designed to be temporary and can be a fire hazard if left out too long. • When installing deco-

rative lighting on patios or along walkways, inspect the packaging and electrical cords to make sure that it’s certified and marked for use in an outdoor or wet location. • Turn off the electricity supply before the work begins and unplug lights when possible. • Carefully inspect lights and lamps to make sure there are no broken or cracked sockets or housings, and no bare or frayed wires.

Hidden gems glitter in many Visitors to the Southtowns may see the quaint streets, shopping plazas, tree-lined neighborhoods of the towns and villages that make up the area, but the street signs and business names are just the surface of what makes Western New York’s southern side special. Town historians, chamber of commerce directors, supervisors, mayors and clerks weighed in on the “hidden gems” they wanted to share with the world. But visitors may want to stop by soon, now that the secret is out. Angola With a population of 2,266, the village of Angola started in 1873 and has remained a walkable, friendly community since its inception, with a recently redesigned streetscape, including benches, flowers and a more pedestrian-friendly design. The village holds weekly concerts at Centennial Park at the William G. Houston Gazebo and the New Angola Theatre has been renovated to reveal its old-timey charm. According to the village, its best-kept secret is Herman Park, with an updated walking path, three pavilions, restroom facilities and a playground in the works, for the kids. If other local parks are booked up, Angola recommended checking out Herman, 19 - AUGUST 2

Evangola State Park in located in Brant, and features swimming, hiking, camping and picnic areas, for family fun right in Buffalo’s backyard. for a family picnic. Blasdell The Village of Blasdell was incorporated in 1898, and while it technically falls under the town of Hamburg, has a unique personality of its own. Blasdell has a variety of shops and stops, including a garden center, the new Black Iron Bystro and of course, Ilio DiPaolo’s Italian Restaurant. The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce hosts a farmer’s market in Blasdell on Wednesday mornings in Ilio’s parking lot, where the restaurant also cooks up fresh food, sidewalkside. Boston The town of Boston was incorporated in 1817 and today has a population of 8,023. Residents treasure its quiet, picturesque setting and beautiful, rolling hills, according to the assistant 014

to the superintendent. In the town of Boston, she said, even strangers can expect a wave and a “hello!” Boston has a large town park, in which concerts, events and sports teams can be found throughout the summer, but locals recommend coming back at peak “leaf-peeping” season and taking one of Boston’s winding roads up to the top of a hill, for maximum viewing potential. Brant Incorporated in 1839, the town of Brant has a population of 2,064. Dubbed the “gateway to Chatauqua County,” the Western Erie County town calls itself a “laidback farming community with an exceptional town park, that includes a public swimming pool.” The tax rate in Brant has decreased every year since

2007, and the town is also one of 100 climatesmart communities in New York state. Bordering the Seneca Nation of Indians, Brant also hosts 85 percent of Evangola State Park. Brant holds an annual summer festival in June and summer concerts, when the weather warms. Home of the Lake Shore Eagles Junior Youth Football and Cheerleading, Brant officials said the best time of year is the fall, when the foliage blooms and the sweet smell of grapes wafts down the road from vineyards bursting with fruit. Evans The town of Evans, with a population of 16,356, was incorporated March 31 and boasts some of the most beautiful waterfront in Western New York, according to the Evans/Brant Chamber of Commerce. S u n s e t s a t S t u rg e o n Point Marina are not to be missed, but there are a number of other state parks, town parks, beach-front re taurnts and bars to make Evans a summer weekend destination or a Sunday afternoon stop-through. The best-kept secret though is the Frank Lloyd Wright Graycliff Estate, an “architectural jewel” designed by Wright for Isabelle R. Cont. on page 22

Today, it is being restored to showcase the original architecture, and give visitors a place to discover a piece of history. Having won a full slate of awards, it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a New York State Landmark. With a playground and well-kept sidewalks, the village clerk recommended taking a stroll through the village or visiting Farnham’s bestkept secret: horseback riding at Lone Pine Riding Stables. Hamburg The village of Hamburg was incorporated in 1874, and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce had many adjectives to describe the hamlet: friendly, charming, active, walkable and historic. With a number of entries on the National Register of Historic Places, Hamburg can

make for an educational walking tour for history buffs, with stops for hot dogs, ice cream, pizza or a sit-down meal along the way. Recent initiatives in streetscaping have resulted in a walkable community with wide, landscaped sidewalks and plenty to walk to, a well. Hamburg may be best known for its events, due to what the chamber called the willingness of multiple groups to work together for a great cause. Those include Rock the Roundabout, Hamburgh Holidays, Wine About, Progressive Dinners, Music in Memorial Park, Blast on the Beach, Oktoberfest

and more. Fresh food enthusiasts might check out the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings and stop by the village of Hamburg bird sanctuary at Buffalo and Main street or for a unique gift, rent the star at the top of the water tower, to commemorate a special occasion. How parents can help

What would summer be without days spent frolick- ing at the beach or afternoons spent splashing in the pool? Fun in the water makes hot days more enjoyable and bearable, and few summertime activities do not involve water play in one aspect or another. Although time spent in the water can be refreshing and entertaining, water does present certain hazards, particularly for those who do not know how to swim. Learning to swim, especially at a young age, is ad- viseable and a great way to

remain safe around the water. The World Health Organization says drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death across the globe, accounting for 7 percent of all in- juryrelated deaths. Children, males and individuals with increased

access to water are most at risk of drowning. In general, children under five years of age have the highest drowning mortality rates in the world, though adult males in Canada and New Zealand drown at higher rates than children. According to the Amer-

ican Academy of Pediatrics, parents should consider swimming lessons for most children between the ages of one and four. New research has revealed that swimming instruction for children between the ages of one and four may de- crease drowning risk. However, parents should be advised that swimming lessons do not remove all risk. Children still need constant supervision when in and around water. eas and opportunities for cultural tourism,” according to its government officials. Some of those cultural areas include Schoolhouse No. 8 History Center and Museum and the 1851 Hicksite Quaker Meeting House. North Collins also boats an active Historical Society Museum, as well as a library chock full of both classic and new titles, as well as several “drive-by” historical sites, for a leisurely country drive. Orchard Park Founded by the Quakers in the early 1800’s, the town of Orchard Park today has a population of more than 30,000 and sustains a spirited friend-

liness within a semi-rural setting, according to its chamber of commerce. Made up of the village and the town of Orchard Park, the area is almost 40 miles in size and includes neighborhoods, shopping of all kinds, restaurants and attractions that range from the Buffalo Bills stadium to Chestnut Ridge Park. Summertime concerts entertain the crowds at the Quaker Arts Pavilion, while Green Lake provides a swimming beach, splash pad, playground and ballfields. Chestnut Ridge Park offers 1,500 acres of hiking trails, picnic areas, ballfields and playgrounds in the summer and sledding,

tobogganing and crosscountry skiing in winter. Community events include the Fourth of July Celebration; Quaker Days, and the Quaker Arts Festival, held in September, a nationally recognized arts and craft show with over 300 exhibitors. Several little-known jewels are the Quaker Meeting House, constructed in 1820, a prime example of early American architecture. A partition was placed through the center, permitting men to sit on one side and women on the other. The straight-backed wooden benches built by hand in those early years are still used today. This

building is still a place of worship for the Quakers. The Eternal Flame is located within Chestnut Ride Park, within a grotto nestled into a waterfall. A 1.5-mile hike takes visitors to the flame, so named because it is always lit. The Southtowns offer many treasures for nature-lovers, history buffs, outdoor adventurers or those who want to get outside of their comfort zone for an afternoon, a day or a weekend. For more information on these municipalities, visit their chamber of commerce, town or village websites, and learn what else southern Erie County has to offer its visitors.

Stretch dollars on

In an era of escalated airline ticket prices and extra travel expenses, road trips have emerged once more as a popular and cost-conscious mode of vacationing for individuals and families. Nearly 80 percent of leisure trips in 2012 were made by car, says the U.S. Travel Association. Fodor’s Travels advises taking road trips across Canada in the summer, when temperatures average 74o F (23o C) and snow and slush are a distant memory. Various trips exist that can take you through urban or rural areas.

Those making road trips may be concerned about keeping costs down, particularly if saving money is the catalyst behind the road trip vacation. The following are a few tips to stretch dollars that much further on

only will this save money, it will mean food is at the ready when hunger strikes. Food need not be all cold snacks, like sandwiches. Frozen burgers or refrigerCont. on page 32

ated frankfurters can be cooked on a camp stove or tossed on a grill at a park’s picnic area. Save restaurant dining as a special treat during the vacation. • Look for inexpensive lodging. While on a road trip you may need to compromise some of the comforts of home to save some money. Motel rates are an- other trip budget-buster. But by mixing overnights at motels with less expensive options you may be able to mitigate costs. Camp out at a safe campsite and purchase a shower ticket so you can enjoy a cheap, hot shower the next day. Spend a few nights

under the stars; just be sure you have the right gear. Some also like to plan road trip routes between where relatives live and make pit stops at a friend or family member’s home. When seeking motels, try to bargain and see if you’re eligible for any rebates or coupons due to age or military status. • Map out cheaper gas stations. Today’s smartphones have apps that enable you to find nearby gas stations. Such apps may even shed light on which filling sta- tions offer the best prices on gasoline. • Dont speed. In addition to being illegal, speeding wastes gas. Stick to

the speed limit to avoid potentially costly tickets and improve fuel efficiency. • Bring friends along. Friends will not only make the trip more fun, but they also can take turns driving and sharing the costs of the excursion. • Join a roadside assistance club. Vehicle problems are inevitable if you are a frequent road-tripper who’s driving an older car. Avoid potentially costly towing costs by joining a roadside assistance club that will pay for your vehicle to be towed if necessary. • Have the proper paperwork. Keep a cur-

rent copy of your car registration, license and proof of insurance with you on a road trip. This makes it much easier to deal with traffic stops along the way. Individuals and their passengers planning on visiting another country should have their passports available and follow the laws regarding bringing food or goods over the border to avoid fines. Road trips can be enjoyable excursions that cost far less than other vacations. Road-trippers can stretch funds even further with some handy tips.

Plan ahead for a fun day The search is on to find entertaining ways to fill the steamy dog days of summer. After days spent swimming in the pool or at the beach, adults and children alike may be looking for something new, and water parks are an ideal way to spend a summer afternoon. Such parks are not only adventurous, but they also make great ways to cool off when the mercury soars. As with any trip, prepa- ration is necessary to make the most of your day at the water park.

Know when the water park opens and be the first one in line, which affords you the luxury of the best parking spot and first choice for rides. If you’re not an early bird, visit the park just before closing. Crowds may have thinned out by then

and the weather may be considerably cooler. • Wear brightly colored bathing suits. Many water parks have strict guidelines as to which type of clothing can be worn. Bathing suits are usually a must, as they won’t get caught or tangled like shirts and

shorts might. Choose brightly colored or patterned swimsuits so kids will stand out in the crowds. This will make it easier to keep them in your sights. Similarly, wear something that makes it easy for your children to find you should they get lost. • Study the weather report. Summer weather can change in an instant. One moment it may be hot and sunny, while the next moment ominous thunderstorm clouds may soak anyCont. on page 38

How parents can help... ing measure. When enrolling children in swim lessons, parents should look for safety-certified instructors who have first aid and resuscitation training and certification. Many programs offered are sponsored by the Amer- ican Red Cross or the YMCA. Private swim clubs may have their own instructors. Children between the ages of one and three typically do not have the motor coordination to swim effec- tively. These children can benefit from swim lessons that emphasize getting used to the water, safety and learning some swimming readi-

ness skills. Instruction may involve teaching children how to move their legs and arms and strengthen muscles used for swimming. Children between the ages of four and five may be more developmentally ready for swimming. Such youngsters may move from watersafety lessons to actual swimming with or without support. A study titled “Children’s readiness for learning front crawl swimming” published in The Australian Journal of Sci- ence and Medicine in Sport showed that whether kids “started lessons at two, three or

four years of age,” they learned to swim well at “approximately the same mean age of five and a half years.” In addition to swimming lessons, parents and other adults can ensure water safety by taking the following precautionary measures: • Children should never be left unattended in the wa- ter. It takes mere inches of water for a youngster to drown. • In the pool or another body of water, caregivers should be within touching distance of young swim- mers to provide help if needed, even if the child is wearing a floatation

device. • Keep rescue equipment by the pool. • Remove toys from the pool when it’s not in use. These toys can attract children who will go in after them. • A fence around the perimeter of the yard may be mandatory, but a fence around the pool itself is anoth- er safety barrier to consider. The fence should feature a self-latching gate. • Even adults should be watched while swimming. It is always a safe idea to swim with a buddy, so that the other person can get help if something goes wrong.

one still outdoors. Many water parks shut down rides when there is thunder and lightning, and the park may close early if the weather is particularly bad. Dou- ble-check the weather report before making the trip so that your time and money is well spent. • Invest in a waterproof money holder necklace. Chances are you will store many of your belongings in a locker so that you will not have to carry around too many items. But it is helpful to have a few dollars on hand for those times when lemonade or ice cream sundaes beckon, so purchase a waterproof necklace to secure and hold your money. • Visit when the park is unlikely to be busy. Many parks are very busy during the summer, especially on the week- ends when parents are not at work. So families who visit during the week might enjoy a less crowded park, which means shorter lines to get on the rides. Call ahead to inquire if any camps or large groups are scheduled to visit the park on a day you want to visit. • Bring along a change of clothing. Sitting around in a damp bathing suit, especially on the long car ride home, can be uncomfortable. Pack a change of clothes and dif- ferent

shoes. This way everyone will be dry, warm and comfortable. • Research coupons and discount codes. Search the In- ternet to find out if the water park is offering any discount- ed tickets. Admission for a family of four can be expen- sive, but coupons or other discounts can cut those costs considerably. Find out if the park sells season passes, which will end up saving you money if you plan to visit the park on a regular basis. Certain amusement parks pair up with retailers and sponsors to offer discounts, so you may be eligible for discount tickets by dining out at a particular restaurant or collecting a coupon code from the back of a cereal box. • Get there early or very late. The parking lot at the wa- ter park may be as large as the park itself. Get to the park early to avoid parking miles away from the entrance. Water parks are a summertime staple. With a few tips, visiting a water park with the family can be a safe and memorable outing. • Plan break times. The water park may be overwhelm- ing, especially for tired, hungry children. So take breaks for snacks, lunch and even a few moments to just settle down and catch your breath.

Double D.A.B.

Darlene Breads and Douglas Bowen founded Double D.A.B. Riding Stable in 1982. The stable was created, and continues to operate, based on a passion for horses and love of nature. The stable is still owned and operated by Darlene and Douglas, as well as their daughter, Chelsey. The farm started out with a single old barn, but has expanded to three separate barns, an indoor riding arena, an office, over 60 acres of grass pasture, and more than 300 acres of wooded trails. At the stable, you will find a farm-like envi-

ronment with a menagerie of animals including horses, donkeys, goats, llamas, dogs, cats, geese, and even a pot-bellied pig. The pride and joy of the stable is its herd of over 80 horses. The herd consists mostly of Appaloosas and American Paint Horses, but there

are 10 distinct breeds of horses and ponies. Most of the horses at Double D.A.B. Riding Stable were born and raised at the stable, and all of them were trained here. Double D.A.B. Riding Stable offers many activities centered on the horses. The stable gives

guided trail rides, sunset trail rides, pony rides, riding lessons, summer day camps, and a petting farm. The scenic trail rides are the most popular attraction. Guides take customers on horseback rides through miles of scenic, wooded trails. The beautiful trails include streams, gently rolling hills, fields of wildflowers, and a chance to see some local wildlife. All trail rides are geared towards people looking to spend some leisurely Cont. on page 50

Penn Dixie fossil site holds Southtowns history 2 0 1 4

Following the coordinates 42°46’35” and -78°49’47” will lead to uncovering one of the Southtowns prized gems: the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center. “This is not a museum and we don’t want to be a museum,” said the site’s Executive Director Jerry Bastedo. “This is a hands on place where people can come out and experience.” The Penn Dixie is a site of a former quarry operation that was the source of calcareous shale excavated and used for cement aggregate by

the Penn Dixie Cement Company. Shale was removed during the 1960s, which revealed 380 million year old Devonian era fossils that were preserved within the Win-

physical and mental challenges and more. Visitors have spanned from 36 different states and nine countries. “Everyday we have people from out of state

and out of country,” he added. In June 2011, Penn Dixie was ranked No. 1 fossil park in the United States and has received further “national and international recognition,” according to Bastedo. The Hamburg Natural Historical Society Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that owns Penn Dixie. No political connection tie the establishment to the town of Hamburg, although, “The town of Hamburg has been very supportive of us,” Bastedo said. Those who become members of Penn Dixie are open to even more opportunities, including out of town trips. Membership trips have

included various museums, a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, and a future trip to Australia. Penn Dixie currently has members from 30 different states, Canada, England and Germany. Several categories of memberships allow “to make this place affordable, so that people can come out and experience the science. We really emphasize the family aspect of things,” Bastedo said. Students, seniors, family (for two adults and children of that household), grandparents (two grandparents and up to five grandchildren), associate, corporate, patron and school memberships are avail-

able. An application can be found on the Penn Dixie website, in addition to detailed listings about upcoming events. From Monday, Aug. 25-Friday, Aug. 29, the summer science safari summer day camp will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for 8- 12-year-olds. The camp will take place between Penn Dixie, Evangola State Park, and Reinstein Woods. Registration is necessary. The 23rd annual Penn Dixie Nature Cruise and Buffalo Lighthouse Tour will take place Saturday, Sept. 13, with departure at 8:30 a.m. at the Erie Basin Marina. Participants will be able to see views from the harbor, Lake Erie, the Niagara

River, the locks and the Black Rock Canal, in addition to the turbines along the Bethlehem Steel site. For more information, call Penn Dixie or fill out a registration form via the website. “We have such a variety of fossils that are so well-preserved. You can find some really beautiful material,” Bastedo said. “It looks like a dessert, but we always tell people never judge a book by its cover. You’re looking at geographic history.” For more information about the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center, visit www.penndixie.org or call 627-4560.

Hamburg Oktoberfest brings all things German Oktoberfest originated Oct. 12, 1810. Now, more than 1 million gallons of beer are consumed annually, as places around the world recreate the festivities of the original event held by Bavarian royalty in Munich, Germany, according to the History Channel. The Hamburg Oktoberfest Committee, previously run under the umbrella of the Village Business Advisory Council, broke off and became its own 501(c) (3) nonprofit, this year. “We broke away to

bring up some more money for charities. We run it more for a charitable organization,” said the committee’s President Joe Gunning. This is Gunning’s second year as president but he has been involved with the committee since 2009. The rest of committee includes Rick Benz, Jay Brewer, Dan Della Vella, Erin Erickson, Gayle Hardick, Nicole Kohler, Kevin Lalock, Jason Lezark, Mike Scherer and Rich Schneider. Oktoberfest will be

held in the village of Hamburg Memorial Park from 3-11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13. The day-long event will feature all things German. Food will be available for patrons, served by local vendors, including Buffalo Street Grill, Mason’s Grille 52 and the Village Sweet Shoppe and Gifts. Volunteer collective Imagine:Hamburg will be present to serve pretzels and other refreshments. The central focus of Oktoberfest: Beer. Gunning said that brews will mostly be all German beer “right off the truck from Germany, basically.” The newly established Hamburg Brewing Company will also be present, this year. Wine will be provided by Ten Thousand Vines winery and McK-

enzie’s Hard Cider© will be available, for the non-beer drinkers. With a striving goal toward being an authentic German festival, music entertainment for the event will be based out of the culture, as well. The Buffalo-based German American Musicians has a stated mission to “preserve, promote and advance within American society the traditional music and culture of Germanspeaking lands.” As a part of the German American Musicians Association Inc., the band initially organized in 1993. Also performing at Oktoberfest will be The Auslanders. The group has been performing German tunes throughout Western New York since 1974. Vehicles with Ger-

Oktoberfest Cont... man origin will be posted up for the annual Oktoberfest car show. This year there will be seven categories, and awards will go toward first place winners in each. Award for the overall category will be given as follows: first place, $300; second place, $150; and third place, $50. Judging will be based on paint and finish, body and fenders, wheels and tires, top and roof, interior and upholstery, lights, engine area and overall. Participating vehicles must be parked and signed in between 1-3 p.m. The winner will be announced at 5:30. For registration questions, contact Jay Brewer at jaybreweremail@gmail.com. A home-brew contest will also take place. New this year is the entire event taking place under one huge tent, rather than several smaller tents, like in years past. Gunning wanted to make it known that, “Yes [Oktoberfest] is to have fun, but it’s also to raise money for the community.” With funds raised from 2013, checks will be presented at this year ’s festival. Imagine:Hamburg will receive $5,000 for new Hamburg gateway signs. A check for $2,000 will go to

the Hamburg Public Library for the reconstruction and expansion of that building. Both Hamburg Academy of Finance and the DaniFitness Park will receive $1,000. Monies will also be given back to the Memorial Park for beautification. All may attend but attendees interested in drinking must be 21 years of age or older. Police patrol will be stationed at each entrance. Those with a proper ID will be given a wristband; refreshments can than be bought using tickets. The Hamburg Oktoberfest has seen approximately 5,000-6,000 attendees in the past few years, according to Gunning. Children are welcome, however pets will be prohibited. The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce’s Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development Erin Erickson said, “The Hamburg Oktoberfest has become a beloved community tradition over the past 7 years, offering authentic German food, dance, music, a German Car Show and amateur beer brewing contest. It is an event not to miss!” For more information about Hamburg’s Oktoberfest, visit www.hamburgoktoberfest.com.
