CPOWNY and Buffalo Zoo pair up to welcome giraffe calf By Lizz Schumer THE SUN EDITOR
There is a new face at The Buffalo Zoo, and Community Papers of WNY Inc. is partnering with the Zoo to welcome its first Zoo-born baby in some time: A baby giraffe. The male calf arrived in the middle of the night on Oct. 24, to first-time parents A.J, 5, and Moke, 3. Community Papers of WNY has planned a year of events and promotions, in conjunction with the Zoo, to welcome the newest addition to Western New York. A formal press release will be released by the Zoo and CPOWNY on Dec. 15, announcing the still-anonymous baby’s name, as well as the
reasoning behind its new moniker. The newspaper group and the Zoo are working together to host a series of events and contests, to coincide with the calf’s first year of life, and CPOWNY readers will be the first to know, and participate in, these promotions. Baby giraffes tend to remain with their parents until they are around about 22 months old, so the organization has plenty of time to spend with the new little one. Special events will include a coloring contest, in which children in grades K-4 color a drawing of the baby giraffe and mother from a drawing template included in all community papers. A winner will be selected from each
of CPOWNY’s 25 community newspapers by random drawing and each winner will receive a family pass for the Buffalo Zoo; two parents and two children. Next will be a contest for winning a named, baby giraffe plush animal, for sharpeyed readers. A series of eight billboards by Lamar of Buffalo are located throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area that feature the photo and name of the new Buffalo Zoo baby giraffe. The first family from each of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight route and cross-street billboard locations will receive the collectible baby giraffe. Outdoor billboards will be in place for six weeks, starting
Dec. 15. According to CPOWNY Director of Marketing Dr. Janet Gane, the baby giraffe’s arrival will be heralded by a year-long calendar of events, distributed by the 25 papers, as well as WNY Health Magazine, with a article focused on conservation and preservation of the animals’ natural habitats. “There’s a real concern about poaching of giraffes, and other animals are also in danger,” Gane explained, “So, we want to make sure our readers are aware of that, as well as the first to know about this precious little one.”

SPINAL STENOSIS - NEW TREATMENTS • RELIEF WITHOUT DRUGS OR SURGERY WHAT IS SPINAL STENOSIS?
Spinal stenosis is often the result of the aging process, which causes the soft tissue and bones in the spine to harden or grow excessively. These changes may narrow the spinal canal and put pressure on the spinal nerve roots causing symptoms such as pain, tingling, weakness or numbness. Spinal stenosis is seen most often in adults older than age 50. The most common cause of spinal stenosis is osteoarthritis. Other causes include bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease or injury to the spine.
NEW TREATMENTS FOR SPINAL STENOSIS: Three new non-surgical FDA cleared technologies are now being used at the Pain Relief Institute to relieve the symptoms of lumbar and cervical spinal stenosis without drugs or surgery. Disc Rehydration Therapy unloads pressure on neurological, vascular and osseous components and is now the primary non-surgical safe and effective treatment for patients with spinal stenosis, herniated disc, degenerative joint disease, facet arthritis, disc bulge and more. Unlike
drugs and injections, this new therapy is natural and its effects are lasting and often permanent. Another new technology called Deep Tissue Laser Therapy is used to reduce pain, relieve inflammation and restore mobility. It uses specific wavelengths of light that have a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Photons of laser energy penetrate deeply into tissue and accelerate cellular reproduction and growth. As a result of exposure to the laser the cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves faster. As inflammation is reduced, pain subsides very quickly. Additionally, Electroanalgesia is now being used to reduce the ability of the afferent nerves to transmit pain signals. This treatment also promotes healing by means of the depolarization effects on the nerve cells. This computer-assisted treatment offers exemplary patient success in the treatment of pain, without piercing the skin. The best news is that these new therapies are suited for almost everyone and unlike some pharmacological solutions, there are no known negative side effects. Regardless of the therapies you’ve tried in the past you still have a chance to relieve your chronic pain or other debilitating condition and regain a normal healthy lifestyle.
Attend a FREE SEMINAR where you will learn all about these new technologies - Seating is limited so register NOW - Call (716) 213-6824
For more information about these therapies please call (716) 213-6824 or visit BuffaloPainDoctor.com. Mention this article when you call to qualify for a no-charge consultation with Dr. Anthony J. Bianchi D.C. at the Pain Relief Institute

ECC makes it six straight at national Mastercam competition ©
For the past five years, students of Erie Community College’s celebrated industrial technology program have enjoyed fall seasons full of awards on the national stage of Mastercam’s Wildest Parts design competition. This year, they continued what has now become an annual tradition of industrial design domination. In a field open to students from over 74,800 schools around the country, ECC’s Michael Manzella notched second place and Paul Gojmerac added third place honors as the college’s par-

According to Mastercam judges, “(Gojmerac) gained a much better understanding of the process of taking a concept through all of the steps necessary to become a finished product. The end result was a great learning experience and an attractive and functional part.” This victory is simply the latest victory for an ECC Industrial Technology Program that is leading the way in

With the goal of reducing the time it takes to get a pistol permit in Erie County, County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that beginning Dec. 3, the Pistol Permit Office will be closed to the public on Wednesdays to process new applications. This initiative comes just after Jacobs and his team completed a comprehensive “Re-engineering analysis of the Pistol Permit Department. “After the enactment of the NYSAFE Act we took in as many new pistol permit applications in the first four months as we did the entire previous year. It was unprecedented, Jacobs said. “We needed to determine what processes we could modify to improve the overall function of this office; primarily improving the time it takes to obtain a pistol permit. The Re-Engineering Project led by Karen Kirbis, a loaned executive from Audubon Machinery, identified several system enhancements that optimized resources currently available. It also identified that with current staffing levels, it is not possible to handle the necessary back office
operations involved in processing a new pistol permit application, while also servicing over 100 customers a day. “Our sole function on Wednesdays will be to process pistol permit applications and to get the files ready to send to the judge for approval, stated Will Fowler, supervisor of the Pistol Permit Department. “Our time will be spent working on new pistol permit applications, preparing files to go to police agencies for background checks and updating current permit holder information in our system. Activities that cannot currently be done efficiently when trying to take care of the volume of customers we assist on a daily basis. Since the passage of the NYSAFE Act it has taken between 12-15 months to obtain a pistol permit in Erie County. “Our goal with the new office hours is to cut the time it takes to obtain a permit by 50 percent, Fowler said. The hours for the Pistol Permit Department on the other days of the week will remain 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and double-check that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly giving yourself time to stop and react safely.
Keep a full tank of gas along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery. While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmis-
sion and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off: deicing washer fluid, oil, power steering and anti-freeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and taillights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be prepared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat litter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12-volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital should you become stranded.

2014-15 Basketball Preview Amherst boys, girls aim for more playoff success
Playoff loss to Cheektowaga on boys’ mind Lady Tigers look to By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
Having a record of 17-4 and a playoff appearance at Buffalo State might be enough to satisfy most high school basketball teams. Not Amherst. That’s because a onepoint sectional playoff loss to Cheektowaga left a sour taste in the Tigers’ mouths, and because of that, the team has come into their early-season practices with a fire in their bellies and a determination to top last year’s results. “We had a pretty good year last year, but losing to Cheektowaga hurt,” head coach Chris Kensy said. “We had a real good offseason, and if we continue to work as hard this
season as we did during the offseason and play unselfish basketball, I think we’ll have the potential to go even further.” Fortunately for the Tigers, the team won’t have to replace many players off of last year’s team. Just four players from 2013-14 are no longer with the Tigers, and because of the team’s depth, Hensy is confident that the veterans he has returning will make the transition from last year to this year go smoothly. “We started three sophomores and two juniors last year, so we’ve got quite a few guys coming back who not only know our system, but also know what it takes to win,” Hensy said. “Some of the guys we’re going to look at to provide production for us will be Dorian

Ending last season with a 12-8 record and a playoff berth, the Amherst Tigers will enter the 2014-15 season looking for more. That’s because a narrow fivepoint loss to Kenmore West in postseason play took away the Tigers’ ability to accomplish higher goals, and head coach Mike Chatelle has his team’s JEFFREY T. BARNES sights set on going further and being even better this year. Terrell Brown is a third-year varsity player. “We had a good season last year, but we didn’t go as far as we wanted to go,” Chatelle said. “If we can rebound well, advantage to have had those Billups and Darian Lowe, create pressure on defense and who are our captains, and guys around for a while and have some good ball movement Terrell Brown, Amadi Ik- they know what’s expected offensively, there’s no telling peze and Nick Foster. It’s an of them.” what we can potentially do. I
think we’re pretty good at getting the ball to the basket, so if we can score points off of that and not be at the foul line, we should be in good shape.” Shooting guard Holly Sullivan, center Alex Allard and point guard Claire Wanzer will be the three players that Chatelle will lean on the most throughout the season due to their experience. However, if the Tigers are to improve this season, chemistry will be key. “Sullivan and Allard are our two senior leaders, and Wanzer’s in her fourth year on our roster, so she’s been around our program for a while and has a lot of varsity experience,” Chatelle said. “If they and the newcomers to our team can click and find good chemistry, we could potentially be a very good ball club.”
Sweet Home boys rely on athleticism, girls without Odom strength to try and win games. “I think this is the most athSPORTS REPORTER letic team Sweet Home’s had since I’ve been here,” Martin The Sweet Home Panthers said. “We also have the least will attempt to win a sectional amount of pure basketball title this season with an ap- ability. We play a lot of teams proach that’s uncommon: by that are fundamentally sound, focusing on their athleticism and this year will be a test to see if athleticism can trump and not on fundamentals. That was an honest assess- fundamentals at the high ment of his team by Panthers school level. We don’t have coach Scott Martin, who after to be great now or in January, watching his team perform but hopefully by February and in practices early last month, March, we’ll be good enough decided to take a page out of to make it to the dance.” The Panthers will attempt some collegiate and pro team’s to do so without last year’s playbooks and focus on a team By Tony Fiorello
leading scorer, James Nix, who graduated. The good news for the Panthers is they will return four of five starters from last year and will rely on a balanced attack to win games. “I think we have a good mix of toughness and speed and we’re versatile,” Martin said. “Brandon Smiley is a guy who we think can make a difference on both ends of the floor. He’s good around the rim, can finish baskets and can change other team’s gameplans. Jordan Evert’s a guy who can rebound well, even though he’s a little under-
sized. Adrian Drake’s another athletic jack-of-all-trades for us and Jordan Heine’s a tough, scrappy point guard. So we’ve got a balanced team and we think it can pay dividends for us.” ••• Losing a key player for an entire season due to injury can be devastating. Losing that same player for another full season to the same injury is almost unfathomable. That exact situation occurred for Sweet Home Panthers forward/guard Lexi Odom. Odom, a senior, suf-
fered a knee injury last season and missed most of the Panthers’ campaign. Then, at the start of practices last month, she injured the same knee for the second straight year. Being without Odom, and her sister Valerie (since graduated), the Panthers could have used their absences as excuses for a down season. But they won’t. “Lexi would have been critical to our team and would have made a big difference on the court,” head coach Yvette Green said. “More than anything, I think we lost more
leadership than talent. The Odoms were both talented, but they provided so much leadership through their work ethic that it’s going to be tough to replace that. “But we’re going to have to make do with the hand we’ve been dealt. We’re going to need our guards (Amanda Gentzke, Alissa Verges and Danielle “Nelly” Brandt) to step up this year and play well. (Forward) Savannah Walker, (guard) Lindsey DiNatale and (forward) Neraelyn Trueheart will also be big keys to our team’s success.”

2014-15 Basketball Preview Williamsville North hoops teams enter season with high expectations coming off strong year Spartans lost to Clarence in playoffs North girls made sectional title run last season By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
Coming off of a 15-5 season that saw the team lose to Clarence in the sectional playoffs at Buffalo State, the Williamsville North Spartans have high expectations entering the 2014-15 season. Unfortunately, roster turnover is an expected rite of passage in high school sports, and this season will be no different. The Spartans, whose roster is heavy on returning veterans from teams past, will attempt to
replace two of their best players – guard Sterling Taplin and forward Kolbe Hughes – from within. “Those two were among the best players I’ve ever had,” head coach Chuck Swierski said. “Taplin was an excellent all-around player, and Hughes was one heck of an athlete. He was a pretty good rebounder and was a great defensive presence. They’ll both be missed tremendously, no doubt about it. “But we’ve got some great players who are ready to step into their shoes. (Center) George Attea’s a big, physical guy, (forward) Dylan
Lambert is a scorer-slasher type and (guard) Maceo Jack is a very athletic guy who is versatile. I don’t have any doubts about their ability to lead our team.” Swierski said that the Spartans’ ability to step up and perform during times of adversity will be the determining factor of how far the team will go. “If we’re down by a few points, I’d like to see if we’re the type of team who can make plays in crunch time,” Swierski said. “If we have that ability to come back when we’re down and never give up, then I think we can have a special season.”
By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
The Williamsville North Lady Spartans have high hopes for this upcoming season, and for good reason. The Spartans may have ended last season with a record of just 11-9, but a surprising playoff run that ended with a loss to Jamestown at Buffalo State has raised the bar for a team that will start 2014-15 with its roster mostly intact.
Will East girls progress are reaping the benefits of their depth in their quest to get back to the sectional final at Buffalo State. “I think we’re a lot further along in our development now than where I thought we would be,” Durr said. By Tony Fiorello “This is a young team, and SPORTS REPORTER we’ve got a lot of talent in our pipeline. I’m confident Having lost eight seniors that we can get back to the to graduation, one could be level that we were at last forgiven if they looked at year.” Williamsville East’s roster Some areas of the team and thought that the Flames that could use some imwould have a difficult time provements going forward repeating last year’s success. for the Flames include their Not so, according to head rebounding and their offencoach Chris Durr. Despite sive sets. The players who the losses, the Flames have will execute those parts of promoted from within and the game – including fresh-
man guard Erica Martinsen, junior forward Carly Shifflet, senior forward Erin Jozwiak, senior center Alex Sommer and senior forward/ guard Tori Thuman – don’t have a size advantage on most teams, but they can make up for a lack of size with determination and smarts. “It’s early in the year, and I think our timing and chemistry on offensive sets will improve as the season goes on,” Durr said. “As far as rebounding goes, we’re not the biggest of teams, but as long as we out-work everyone else and play smarter than everyone else, good things should follow.”
“We have some pretty lofty goals around here, and some of them are to win our league and a sectional title,” head coach Bill Shaw said. “It only makes sense to aim high in whatever sport you compete in, and the good news for us is that we have a lot of girls coming back who know our system. The more familiarity you have with each other, the more it should help you.” Having lost just one senior to graduation – guard Katie Wolfe – Shaw will be counting on returning captains Clare
Ahern and Anne Principe and a solid core of players to be able to replace the former captain’s leadership and talent. “Losing Wolfe is going to hurt, for sure,” Shaw said. “She was a great leader for us, and that’s why she was one of our captains. But we’ve got a lot of players who are very good who can step up. Principe is a good outside shooter, Ahern’s very athletic, and Ericka Taplin can dominate games. They should all play a lot of minutes for us and contribute.”
South returns cast of solid boys ballers By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
Continuity is something that most sports teams strive to have. So when Williamsville South Billies coach Gabe Michaels looked at his roster for the 2014-15 season, he noticed that he didn’t lose many players from last year’s team. Names like senior captains Sam Castronova and Kam Varner, and juniors Matt Foster, Graham Dolan and Myles Hall will be relied upon to help lead the Billies
back to postseason play. This will probably be the most veteran group that I’ve had here, which is exciting,” Michaels said. “In my first year here a couple of years ago, we had seven seniors, but none had played for me before. This group knows what to expect and I know them as well. But it doesn’t mean we’re going to be good. It just means that we’ll have guys who are familiar with each other and I’m optimistic because of that.” Another factor working in the Billies’ favor this year is their schedule. Last year was
a murderer’s row of sorts with games against Canisius, Olean and Batavia included with the team’s normal set of divisional matchups, and not having to go against them again had Michaels breathing a sigh of relief. “Last year, our schedule was just brutal to go against,” Michaels said. “This year, we’ll still play a tough schedule, but it’s not as grueling as last year’s was. Having our guys go through that experience last year, we should be able to apply any lessons learned from that toward this year.”
