Giangrecco-Marotta joins Summit Pamela GiangrecoMarotta has joined Summit Educational Resources as Director of Administrative Services with responsibility for managing all agency office operations and procedures to ensure organizational effectiveness and efficiency. Amherst Senior Citizens Foundation names Robert M. Chur as 2014 Senior Community Leader

The Amherst Senior Citizens Foundation (ASCF) is pleased to announce the recipients of their Senior Community Leader and Senior Citizens Volunteer Awards for 2014. The awards will be presented at the ASCF’s Night in Tuscany Gala celebrating the foundation’s 21st anniversary on Nov. 15 at Transit Valley Country Club. This year, ASCF has selected Robert M. Chur for the organization’s Senior Community Leader Award. This award is intended to recognize someone who, through his or her position, time and talent, has provided important leadership in promoting and developing activities, which provide a favorable climate for Am-

herst seniors to age within the community. For over 36 years, Chur has done exactly that through his leadership in residential health care management that includes the construction of health care facilities and development of skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living service operations. Chur was an owner, president and CEO of Elderwood Senior Care from 1978 until July 2013, when most of the Elderwood assets were sold. He was also a founder of Elderwood, and started with one skilled nursing and health-related facility. On May 15, 1978, Chur and his wife, Carol, opened their first 160-bed facility, Heathwood Health Care Center, on Hop-

kins Road in Williamsville. Under Chur’s management leadership, Elderwood grew into one of the most progressive residential health care providers in Upstate New York, employing over 2,800 staff and serving more than 5,000 residents each year in 19 facilities located in Central and Western New York. During the 35 years of Chur’s leadership, many of the Elderwood facilities and staff members of these facilities received statewide recognition awards, and also national quality awards from the American Health Care Association. Chur and Carol still own and operate two former Elderwood facilities which are now called Heathwood Assisted

Living of Williamsville and Heathwood Assisted Living of Penfield, in the Rochester area. Chur now works at CCNY (Chur Companies of New York, Inc.) Among his many philanthropic and service endeavors, Chur was a past president of Williamsville Rotary Club Foundation and a past board member of the local Visiting Nurses Association (VNA). At the state health care association level, he served as a past chairman of the board of directors of the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA), the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL) and the Foundation for Quality Care (FQC). Chur was also a past board member of the

national American Health Care Association, and the local Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and Kaleida Health Foundation boards. He also served as the president of the New York State Health Facilities Association local District No. 10. In 2002, Chur was appointed by the governor for a term on the New York State Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) Council. Currently, Chur is president of the advisory board of the Salvation Army Buffalo Service Area and a member of the Daemen College Board of Trustees and Paul Smith’s College Board of Trustees. Beverly and Sidney Fish were selected as the recipients of the Senior Citizens

Volunteer Award, which was created to honor individuals who display a passion for giving of their time, endeavoring to fulfill the needs of our community, and serving as role models by demonstrating the critical importance of individual involvement and caring. In this case, the dedication was magnified by two special people who began their volunteer journey together over 60 years ago. The two met in their early teens, sharing common interests including a passion for helping others.

Roswell Park now offering screening mammograms for general public Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) announces the expansion of its breast imaging services to the general public, offering routine screening mammography to non-patients in an effort to improve breast cancer screening rates and increase detection of breast cancer at the earliest, most curable stages. Current statistics show that as many as half the women who should be receiving an annual mammogram are not getting this important cancer screening. “We are pleased to be able to offer our technology and expertise for breast cancer detection to all women,â€? says Ermelinda Bonaccio, MD, director of breast imaging at RPCI. “Cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment are our specialty. Applying our capabilities to breast cancer screening is an important part of our mission.â€? Mammography is the only screening test that’s proven to reduce a woman’s risk of dying from the disease. But in the City of Buffalo, a lack of facilities that offer mammography screening makes it PRUH GLIĂ€FXOW IRU ZRPHQ WR get the screening. “Currently, there are only Ă€YH 8 6 )RRG DQG 'UXJ $GPLQLVWUDWLRQ FHUWLĂ€HG PDPmography centers in operation in the City of Buffalo, including Roswell Park; in 2012, there were 11 facili-

ties,� says Christy Widman, a community outreach manager with the Western New York Cancer Coalition (WNYC2) Center to Reduce Disparities at RPCI. In addition, Erie County has the highest breast cancer mortality rate compared to the rest of New <RUN 6WDWH DQG KDV WKH KLJKHVW breast cancer mortality rate among African-Americans in the state, too. A new and larger breast imaging center will be located within the 11-story clinical sciences center, currently under construction adjacent to the main Roswell Park hospital, but the need for these services was deemed too urgent to wait for the building’s completion. At RPCI, screening mammograms are batch read by WZR 53&, UDGLRORJLVWV 6WXGies show this method of batch reading lowers the rate of false positives, which means fewer women need to return for additional images. The breast imaging and diagnostic services now available to the general public include: •Mammography, both screening and diagnostic types •Advanced breast imaging such as ultrasound, breast MRI and digital mammography •Minimally invasive breast biopsy •Pathology analysis by pathologists who focus exclusively on breast cancer

•Access to genetic counseling, the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program for those at high risk of developing cancer and the multidisciplinary breast cancer care team. Afternoon and evening appointments (3 to 6:20 p.m.) are reserved for women getting a screening mammogram, and free onsite parking is provided. Appointments take approximately 30 minutes, and women receive a personal phone call the following morning with their results. RPCI recommends that women at average risk should begin yearly mammograms at age 40. Personal risk factors such as family history of the disease may warrant screening beginning at an earlier age. Women should discuss their personal factors with their healthcare providers. Fallon Health to expand services Weinberg Campus, our region’s largest aging health campus, today announced that it has formed a joint venture with Fallon Health of Massachusetts to expand the services currently provided through its Total Aging in Place Program (TAIPP) in Erie County in Western New York state. Effective immediately, TAIPP will be known as Fallon Health Weinberg. Recognizing the needs of an increasing number of elders in the region, Weinberg Campus is extending its services further into the community. Weinberg reached out to a nationally recognized not-for-profit health care services organization with extensive experience in caring for adults over 55 with complex care needs. The joint venture, Fallon Health Weinberg, will bring together each organization’s capabilities and expertise in delivering high-quality, person-centered, cost-effective health care programs to individuals who require supportive services due to long-term health needs. There will be a number of programs offered under the Fallon Health Weinberg umbrella. The first is TAIPP, which was established in

2003. TAIPP is a Managed Long Term Care plan (MLTC) and a provider of community-based long-term care services. The program is designed to help participants to continue to live safely in their own homes and communities. The program provides and coordinates needed health care and supportive services to promote independence. In support of the planned expansion of services, Fallon Health Weinberg has applied to expand this MLTC plan to serve eligible individuals 21 years and over in both Erie and Niagara counties. In addition, it also has applied to become a provider of a Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), and will soon begin marketing a Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plan (HMO SNP) for dual-eligibles in October for a Jan. 1, 2015, enrollment date. PACE is a Medicare and Medicaid program that helps people age 55 and older meet their health care needs in the community instead of going to a nursing home or other care facility. Fallon Health Weinberg’s HMO SNP is a Medicare Advantage plan for individuals 21 years and older who are eligible for both

Living Well sponsors ‘Caring for the Caregivers’ conference Caregivers can learn techniques to help them experience less stress, deeper peace and better health, by attending a free Living Well conference entitled Caring for the Caregivers, to be offered on Nov. 1 in Kenmore and on Nov. 15 in Amherst. Caregiver stress is a serious concern today, with 65.7 million caregivers, or 29 percent of the U.S. adult population providing care to someone who is ill, disabled or aged (National Alliance for Caregiving). If left unchecked, caregiver stress can lead to burnout, decreased levels of health and deteriorating relationships. In a recent survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, 67 percent of caregivers said they do not go to the doctor because they put their family’s needs first, or they put their care recipient’s needs over their own. More than half (51 percent) said they do not have time to take care of themselves and almost half (49 percent) said they are too tired to do so. Caring for the Caregivers is a half-day conference to reduce caregiver stress, learn about local resources and meet physical, emotional, social and/or spiritual needs by developing action plans with professionals, family and friends. The workshop includes topics such as warning signs to watch for in your loved one; what resources are available to help you and your care receiver; and how to develop a plan to monitor your needs as well as those of your care receiver. ECC honored as one of the nation’s best colleges for vets

Sweet Home leans on ground game in quarterfinals win By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

The Sweet Home football team took care of business on Saturday (Oct. 25) as it downed McKinley in the Section VI Class A quarterfinals by, 44-6. It was a win that was won the old-fashioned way — by running the ball and playing sound defense, which suited the Panthers just fine. “Our guys did a real good job today, and the results were the product of what we’ve been preaching to them throughout the week,” head coach John Faller said. “Our running game and defense was very good, and we took advantage of some turnovers too. Everything really fell together for us.” Due to high winds, the Panthers came out of the gates by running the football early and often. Handoffs on power running and misdirection plays to athletes such as Brandon Smiley, Jordan Heine and Jordan Evert kept the Macks off-balance all game long. Faller said that the weather did play a factor in their play selection, but what also worked in their favor was the decision to let multiple players touch the ball, because it would keep the Macks guessing as to who would get it next. “The weather was pretty tough today,” Faller said. “We knew that we probably wouldn’t be able to punt the ball more than 20 yards, so we made sure to take advantage of our offensive drives and get everyone touches so that one guy wouldn’t get keyed on. I’d say that worked out pretty well.” The Panthers’ defense also

came on strong throughout the contest by keeping Macks quarterback Keyon Johnson under siege all day long by applying pressure. Sacks were accumulated by Rashod Woods — who had two in the contest, plus a fumble recovery — Steve Iverson, who also had a fumble recovery, and Rashad Parsons. “We knew we had to contain Johnson because he’s a real good scrambler,” Faller said. “It was just a matter of staying square to the ball carrier and not looking to force a fumble all the time. Our tackling, especially, was much improved today, and that helped cause those turnovers rather than just trying to strip the ball carrier.” Iverson said that the Panthers’ defensive success was the result of diligent film study and preparation throughout the week. “We really studied up for (McKinley) coming into today,” Iverson said. “It almost got to the point where we knew what was coming before it actually happened. Our second-string guys did a great job in practice too on the scout team, getting us prepared for them. Everything we did today was because of all the work we did in practice and in the film room.” The Panthers got on the scoreboard first early in the second quarter as quarterback Kevin Torillo completed a fouryard touchdown pass toAdrian Drake. A one-yard touchdown run by Smiley increased the Panthers’ lead and Evert got a rushing touchdown of his own to make the score 21-0 by halftime. Smiley scored from six yards out to give the Panthers a four-touchdown lead and Joe Armenia kicked a 37-yard field goal to make the score 31-0. Smiley then got his third touchdown of the game on a 15-yard run and Evert added

The Panthers’ next opponent, West Seneca East, is a familiar one, as the teams have played one another in the postseason each of the past three seasons. Faller said that because of that familiarity, his team will be prepared to face

the Trojans. “It seems like we play each other in the playoffs every year,” Faller said. “They know what we do well, and we know what they do well. I think it will come down to who executes better next Saturday, and who’s better prepared. We’re planning on being the better team in that regard, for sure.”

Smiley said that while the Trojans present a challenge for the Panthers, he believed that his team can do greater things then just beating West Seneca East. “It’s win or go home at this point in the season,” Smiley said. “West Seneca East is a pretty good team, and I’m sure

that we’ll get their best from them next week. But I think we’re on a mission here, and we’ve got five games to go until we get to the Carrier Dome (in Syracuse). It’s a little early to be talking about that, yes, but that’s our goal, and I think we can eventually get there. As long as we take care of (West Seneca East), we should be fine.”

Williamsville South football falls in Section VI quarterfinals By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

A classic of a football game occurred on Friday night (Oct. 24) as the Williamsville South Billies’ season ended when they fell to the Hamburg Bulldogs 40-34 in overtime in the Section VI Class A quarterfinals. The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Billies, who at one point led 27-9 but couldn’t hold the lead long enough to emerge with a victory. “We missed quite a few opportunities out there tonight to finish the job,” head coach Kraig Kurzanski said. “Give credit to Hamburg, they’re a good team. But I think we should have won the game tonight. It was more of a case

of us beating ourselves than anything else.” The Billies got on the board first early in the opening quarter on a touchdown pass from wide receiver/quarterback Jack Holyoke to starting quarterback Sam Castronova on a wide receiver throwback play. In the second quarter, junior wideout Ryan Philipps scored on a 20-yard reception from Castronova to make it 14-0, but the Bulldogs answered right back with a 31-yard field goal by Jason Shuttleworth. Jordan Buell then scored on another touchdown pass from Castronova to make the score 21-3 at the half. On the Bulldogs’ first offensive drive of the second half, quarterback Alex Suchan and wide receiver Sean DeLellis hooked up on a 47-yard touchdown pass, but Castronova answered with a one-yard quarterback sneak to increase the Billies’ lead to 27-9.

At that point, the Bulldogs began their comeback. “We just didn’t want to let the rest of our teammates down,” Bulldogs running back Mitch Gomolka said. “We needed to start fighting our tails off for the guys next to us, and if we didn’t start making plays quickly and start punching them in the mouth, we were done. Our seniors knew that we didn’t want to end our high school careers with a loss, so we just started fighting back.” The Bulldogs started to make those plays on the following drive, where Gomolka took off on a 74-yard run that ended at the 1. Suchan then scored from 1 yard out, and a 2-point conversion made the score 27-17. Hamburg capitalized off of two non-scoring drives by the Billies by getting another quarterback sneak for a touchdown by Suchan to cut the lead down to 27-24. But the Billies

Hamburg then answered back quickly with another scoring run by Gomolka which cut the lead down to 34-31. The Billies then got the ball, and looked to run the clock down and kill off just over four minutes remaining in the game.

But the team was stopped on fourth-down with one yard to go deep in Hamburg territory as a handoff to Jeremy Spitzberg was stopped just short of a firstdown conversion. With just over a minute remaining, and no timeouts at their disposal, the Bulldogs took over at their own 17-yard line. After a pass to Ian Chavanne picked up a first down and stopped the clock, Suchan found DeLellis down the field for a 52-yard gain that put the Bulldogs in scoring position. Shuttleworth then connected on his second field goal of the night from 37 yards away with no time remaining in regulation to tie the game at 34 points apiece. In overtime, the Billies won the coin toss, and elected to get the ball first. However, the team couldn’t take advantage of it, as they couldn’t convert on all four downs at their disposal. The Bulldogs then got the

ball and promptly marched down the field and ended the game on Gomolka’s third touchdown run of the night. What hurt the most for the Billies wasn’t losing the game, but knowing the fact that their seniors wouldn’t have a chance to win a sectional title. “It’s so hard, knowing that this is the last meaningful game that Castronova and all of our seniors will play for us,” Kurzanski said. “They gave so much of themselves to this program, and they gave everything they had of themselves tonight for a just cause. It hurts to have their high school careers end like this.” “But our goals going into next year won’t change,” Kurzanski said. “We have high expectations around here, and we don’t want to be good. We want to be great, and good is the enemy of greatness. We’re just going to have to figure out a way to win next year.”

Will. East grad Rusk seeing tennis success at collegiate level By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

One of Western New York’s most dominant tennis players is now having success at the college level. Michael Rusk, a sophomore at Hobart College, was recently named the Liberty League’s Singles Player of the Week after defeating T.J. Moor of Union 7-5, 5-2 and besting Bard’s Kevin McDonald 6-2, 6-2 to help the Statesmen picked up two league wins. Rusk’s success at the Division III level isn’t surprising to those closest to him. After going 50-2 as a singles player at Williams-

ville East from 2009-2013, it was only natural for him to make a seamless transition to the collegiate game. “The success he’s had doesn’t surprise me, just because of how driven he is,” Flames coach Dave Monkarsh said. “Every year, Mike made very good progress and as the years went on, his game developed tremendously.” In his freshman year at Williamsville East, Rusk came in second place at sectionals in doubles play, and as a sophomore, he and his partner reached the semifinals and came in fourth place. As a junior and senior, Rusk came in second both years as a singles player. Throughout his first few years

with the Flames, Rusk looked to others for guidance and direction. He didn’t have to look very far in order to find someone to take him under their wing and show him the ropes. “A guy he looked up to was Winston Lin,” Monkarsh said. “Winston was one of the best players to come out of our area, and he’s currently at Columbia. Mike used to watch him and see how he carried himself on the court, and he tried to emulate that.” When it came time for Rusk to become an upperclassman, he took over Lin’s role and became the Flames’ leader – a role he filled very well, according to Monkarsh. “Mike’s very coachable and

is always willing to learn,” Monkarsh said. “He always wanted to learn about and talk to me about the game, not just to get better but to actually learn about the game and its nuances. That’s unique for a high school athlete.” Upon enrolling at Hobart, Rusk found himself in the same predicament as he was in 2009. Needing a mentor to help him adjust to the NCAA level, once again, he turned to a teammate. “Our current senior captain, Michael Fields, has been a positive influence on him this year,” Statesmen coach Tim Riskie said. “Fields served as our team (StudentAthleteAdvisory Council) representative in past years. Rusk is our current SAAC

Rep which is a leadership position that he has grown into, and I’m sure Fields had an impact on Rusk’s development as a SAAC rep and leader of the team.” Rusk agreed. “I really look up to Mike,” Rusk said. “He’s almost like another coach and a mentor to me, and he’s helped me transition well to college tennis. It’s such a grind because there are so many back-to-back matches and practices and workouts, and he’s really been a calming influence for me and always there whenever I need to talk to him. Mike’s been great.” As far as the future is concerned, both of Rusk’s coaches were convinced that he will continue to be an outstanding

tennis player for the Statesmen. “Mike is a solid tennis player and student, and is just a great guy to be around,” Riskie said. “He works hard to push his teammates to continue to improve and that eagerness to win is something that is contagious. I’m confident that once he becomes more of a well-rounded all court player, he has the potential to be one of the best players in the northeast region.” Monkarsh concurred. “The way I describe Mike to other people is that I will probably never have another player like him ever again,” Monkarsh said. “It’s up to Mike to determine how far he wants to go, he can do whatever he sets his mind to.”

They started by entertaining veterans at the VA Hospital at the age of 16. After graduating from high school and getting married, Sidney attended UB Pharmacy School and Beverly earned her degree in retailing from UB. By the time Sidney earned his degree, they were the proud parents of three children. A trained pharmacist who is certified in diabetes management, they purchased their own pharmacy where “Sid” became a caring friend to all of his customers. “Bev” became involved in the PTA while their children were in elementary school and was soon hired by the school. Together they have been very active with the Northeast Kidney Foundation and the American Diabetes Foundation (ADA) where they have been team leaders for the Tour de Cure for the past 20 years. They have worked tirelessly for the ADA by attending national meetings to promote diabetes management and care and promoting participation in ADA events. Beverly serves on the women’s board at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and chairs its annual fashion show fundraiser. She helps run the gift shop at the hospital and is known for her “diaper cakes,” often CPOWNY
