Daemen College pays tribute to the veterans With nearly 100 U.S. flags lining the front campus walkway, Veterans Day at Daemen College was filled with gratitude and tribute to students and Western New Yorkers who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Almost 20 veterans and family members were recognized at an appreciation breakfast hosted by the college’s Center for Veterans and Veteran Family Services. In keeping with the military coin giving tradition as an expression of thanks to current and past service members, veterans at the event were each presented a specially created Daemen coin bearing the college’s logo. Among those attending the breakfast were Daemen President Gary A. Olson, State Senator Michael Ranzenhofer and State Assemblyman Raymond Walter. “The Daemen community extends its deepest gratitude to all those who have bravely

served in the military and honor the many sacrifices veterans have made for our country,” said Olson. “As a nationally designated Military Friendly School, we also strongly support our student veterans as we remain committed to providing them the best opportunity for academic and professional success.” Also at the appreciation event, recognition awards in honor of their “unconditional support and dedication leading to the success of Daemen College’s student veterans” were presented to Theresa Joyce of Depew, director of compliance, and to Clarence residents Sylvia Muhr, bursar, and Jeffrey Pagano, financial aid director. At an afternoon flag installation ceremony, dozens of students from several campus organizations and clubs placed small flags along the front walkway. “These more than 90 flags represent our support and pride for each of our student
veterans at Daemen and stand in honor of their service to our country,” said Hayley Brown of Canandaigua, president of the Daemen Student Association, at the ceremony held outdoors on a brilliant, warm November day. Thomas Sprague of Buffalo, president of the Daemen Student Veterans Alliance, told the gathering of students, faculty and staff that he is “proud to be a part of the Daemen family. This day means a lot to each and every veteran. Having served in the military, the U.S. flags you see here mean so much to so many service members and veterans and represent everything great that we stand for as a country.” Other student speakers included Kelsey Zahno of Wilson, representing the Student Alumni Ambassadors, and Justin Richmond of East Stroudsburg, Pa., president of Omega Epsilon Zeta. Congressman Brian
Shown with Congressman Brian Higgins are (L-R) Thomas Sprague, Kelsey Zahno, Justin Richmond, and Hayley Brown. Higgins, a strong advocate for veterans affairs, joined the Daemen community for the appreciation ceremony. “Veterans Day is a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices our service men and women have made and that we have
an obligation to never forget what they have done for our country,” he said. “Daemen College,” he added, “is an exceptional institution in our community that has welcomed student veterans and prepared them
A reminder to buy local, renew local placed outside the Erie County Auto Bureaus located in the Northtown Plaza, Eastern Hills Mall and Urbandale Plaza shopping centers. “When customers visit these locations, they are supporting local businesses,” Jacobs said. “I hope that residents who are buying local also consider renewing their vehicle reg-
istrations locally by picking up our signature green envelopes.” Taxpayers should know that by not renewing their vehicle registration directly with the Erie County Clerk’s Office, residents lose 12.7 percent per renewal, which totals over $1.5 million annually. This revenue is critical to the county’s general fund to
support vital programs and services important to the community. Motorists can simply place their registration renewal form and check, made payable to the Erie County Clerk, in the postage-paid green envelope and drop it in the signature green box outside the Erie County Auto Bureau locations or any mailbox that is
convenient for them. “I want to encourage individuals to support the region’s economy and patronize locally-owned businesses on Small Business Saturday,” Jacobs said. “I believe our ‘Renew Local’ campaign does just that, while making it an easy and accessible option for motorists to keep much needed revenue in Erie County.”
well for careers that will sustain them throughout their lives.” The ceremony concluded with student speakers reading a roll call of Daemen’s current student veterans.
The signature green envelopes are available at several convenient locations throughout Erie County including your local clerk’s office, the Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries, Dunn Tire and the Erie County Auto Bureau. Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and doublecheck that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your
speed. Due to poor visibility and/or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly giving yourself time to stop and react safely. Keep a full tank of gas along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery.
While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off: de-icing washer fluid, oil, power steering and anti-freeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and taillights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be pre-

In recognition of his enduring support for Daemen College, Dr. Michael Brogan, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, was presented a Distinguished Honoree Award at the 2014 National Philanthropy Day luncheon held Nov. 12. Brogan was among other award winners recognized at the Western New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals event to celebrate donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, corporations, and others engaged in philanthropy in the local community. “We nominated Dr. Brogan for this award because he is the epitome of the spirit of Daemen College,” said Dr. Richanne C. Mankey, vice president for institutional advancement. “A powerful example of his dedication followed the tragic loss of his grandson, which led to the creation of the Paiten J. Meyers-Brogan Scholarship to benefit students with physical disabilities. His compassion is truly an inspiration to us all.” During his nearly 30-year tenure at Daemen, Brogan has been instrumental in securing multiple grants and has generously supported

pared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat litter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12-volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital should you become stranded. Being prepared is the best offense against winter driving. Take it slow, be safe and buckle up. Additional safe driving tips can be found on the Erie County Clerk’s website www.erie.gov/clerk.

Elementary schools display photos Buffalo area elementary students displayed photographs that show their creative views of the community and environment at a Nov. 11 exhibit that culminated a collaborative project with Daemen College. Images from the Seneca Babcock Children’s Photo Show were available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Seneca Babcock After School Program. During the five-week project, Daemen art education students worked with a dozen children in the after school program and instructed them on the basics of camera use. The young participants were then introduced to works by Jay Masiel, an acclaimed photographer best known for his unique perspective on capturing the environment and everyday life. “Jay Masiel wants people to see ordinary things in extraordinary ways through his images so we assisted the youngsters with using that focus when taking purposeful photographs of their surrounding environment and community,” said Dr. Mary Wolf, Daemen art education director, who oversaw the project. It was a resounding success and generated such great interest from elementary students that this year’s project was done specifically for the younger children, explained Wolf. The “Seneca Babcock Through the Eyes, Hearts and Art of Children: Part II” project was an effort of the Daemen-Seneca Babcock
Partnership established by the college’s Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement. The collaborative project was funded by the college’s Student-Faculty Interdisciplinary Think Tank. Daemen student participants included Kathryn Haessner of Moravia; Rebecca Haley of East Amherst; Nicole Pauldine of Sterling; and Emily Yeager of Endwell. In addition to Wolf, Cheryl Bird, executive director of the Daemen CSCCE, was involved with the project.

Pistol Permit Office will close to public on Wednesdays With the goal of reducing the time it takes to get a pistol permit in Erie County, County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that beginning Dec. 3, the Pistol Permit Office will be closed to the public on Wednesdays to process new applications. This initiative comes just after Jacobs and his team completed a comprehensive “Re-engineering” analysis of the Pistol Permit Department. “After the enactment of the NYSAFE Act we took in as many new pistol permit applications in the first four months as we did the entire previous year. It was unprecedented,” Jacobs said. “We needed to determine what processes we could modify to improve the overall function of this office; primarily improving the time it takes to obtain a pistol permit.” The Re-Engineering Proj-
ect led by Karen Kirbis, a loaned executive from Audubon Machinery, identified several system enhancements that optimized resources currently available. It also identified that with current staffing levels, it is not possible to handle the necessary back office operations involved in processing a new pistol permit application, while also servicing over 100 customers a day. “Our sole function on Wednesdays will be to process pistol permit applications and to get the files ready to send to the judge for approval,” stated Will Fowler, supervisor of the Pistol Permit Department. “Our time will be spent working on new pistol permit applications, preparing files to go to police agencies for background checks and updating current permit holder infor-
mation in our system. Activities that cannot currently be done efficiently when trying to take care of the volume of customers we assist on a daily basis.” Since the passage of the NYSAFE Act it has taken between 12-15 months to obtain a pistol permit in Erie County. “Our goal with the new office hours is to cut the time it takes to obtain a permit by 50 percent,” Fowler said. “We believe that by making this small change in our hours, the end result will be a benefit to the many Erie County residents interested in obtaining a pistol permit,” Jacobs stated. The hours for the Pistol Permit Department on the other days of the week will remain 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

March of Dimes Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait (HBWW) provides education for pregnant women, perinatal providers and the greater community on the problem of preterm birth, risk factors and strategies for reducing risk. In addition, HBWW provides a supportive structure for implementing bundled, evidence-based preterm birth prevention interventions. “Preparing for a new baby is a time of great excitement,” said Aimee Gomlak, vice president of WomenCare at Catholic Health. “Families don’t expect anything to go wrong, but in about one in nine births, babies are born too soon. Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait aims to help eliminate preventable preterm births by combining clinical, education and community efforts.” Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait is an important component of the
March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign, a nationwide effort to address the growing problem of premature birth, which is the leading cause of newborn death and a major cause of serious health problems. It costs society billions of dollars every year. The March of Dimes is also funding research to find the causes of premature birth. The announcement fittingly comes on the fourth World Prematurity Day and on the heels of the March of Dimes recent Premature Birth Report Card. Though there has been a seven-year improving trend in New York’s preterm birth rate, that has helped give more babies a healthy start in life and contributed to the improvement in the national rate, New York’s preterm birth rate was 10.7 percent in 2013. This is down from 12.4 in 2006, the year the rates peaked, but still only earned New York a “B” on the report card. The national preterm birth rate fell to 11.4 percent in 2013 – the lowest in 17 years – meeting the federal Healthy People 2020 goal seven years early. Despite this progress, the nation still received a “C” on the annual report card and still has the highest rate of preterm birth of any industrialized country. “Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo is thrilled to partner with
March of Dimes because of their reputation for excellence and the resources and education they provide to moms and babies,” said Allegra Jaros, president. “March of Dimes does incredible work every day to improve the health of moms and babies. And they educate the community at large about the problem of prematurity, a problem that many call our nation’s silent health crisis.” In 2007, Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait began as a demonstration project of the March of Dimes in Kentucky. The success of that project from 2007-present brought about the foundation’s decision to make HBWW a signature program in 2010, when it was rolled out to two new states (Texas and New Jersey). March of Dimes ultimately hopes to bring the program to needy communities across the country. There are now over 27 of the sites nationwide, with nine sites in Kentucky, five sites in Texas, two sites in New Jersey and seven sites in Kansas. “Partnerships with state and local health departments, our hospital partners and health care providers are a testament to how focused and effective policies, strong leadership, and clinician commitment have led to improvements in obstetric and newborn outcomes in a problem as complex
and seemingly intractable as preterm delivery,” said Christopher Glantz, MD, MPH, professor of OB/ GYN and public health sciences at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong Memorial Hospital and March of Dimes volunteer spokesperson. “Through the March of Dimes unique, team-based research and implementation projects, including decreasing the number of elective deliveries before 39 weeks, we will continue the important work of preventing preterm birth, so more babies will get a healthy start in life.” Premature birth, birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy, is a serious health problem that costs the United States more than $26 billion annually, according to the Institute of Medicine. It is the leading cause of newborn death, and babies who survive an early birth often face the risk of lifetime health challenges, such as breathing problems, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and others. Even babies born just a few weeks early have higher rates of hospitalization and illness than full-term infants. At least 39 weeks of pregnancy are important to a baby’s health because many important organs, including the brain and lungs, are not completely developed until then.
Dunkin’ Donuts, America’s all-day, every-day stop for coffee and baked goods, will offer Western New York residents a reward for good behavior when they show support for the second-oldest humane society in the country. Now through Dec. 5, all participating Dunkin’ Donuts locations throughout the greater Buffalo area will offer guests a special heartshaped donut as a thank you when they make a $1 donation to the SPCA Serving Erie County at participating restaurants. The initiative marks the fourth year in a row that Dunkin’ Donuts has partnered with the SPCA Serving Erie County. The program has raised more than $30,000 since its inception in 2011. “Dunkin’ Donuts is honored to support the SPCA Serving Erie County, which provides high quality care and educational programs to support fair and humane treatment of animals in Western New York,” said Tammy
Celeb
Monks, field marketing manager, Dunkin’ Donuts. “I encourage residents throughout the greater Buffalo area to enjoy a special treat at Dunkin’ Donuts while supporting the SPCA Serving Erie County. I am confident our loyal guests will enthusiastically raise funds for such a vital organization.” The specialty donut is a yeast shell filled with cream and topped with blue frosting in honor of the SPCA Serving Erie County. The availability of the heartshaped donuts leads up to the 11th annual Radiothon to benefit the SPCA Serving Erie County, which will return to the airwaves on Dec. 3-6. During the four-day event, local radio stations WBEN 930 AM and 107.7 FM and Star 102.5 FM will give a voice to the animals through a live broadcast from the SPCA’s headquarters in Tonawanda to raise funds for the SPCA Serving Erie County and its services.

Flames ready for redemption in 14-15 By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
Last season didn’t end in quite the fashion that the Williamsville East Flames wanted to. Sure, the team did win a sectional title. But a narrow 2-1 playoff loss to Auburn (Syracuse) in the regional round has the Flames vowing to exact revenge for the bitter end to their 2013-14 season. “We set our standards pretty high,” head coach Mike Torrillo said. “Last year was a great season for us, winning a sectional championship, but losing to 2014-15 Fed Schedule Dec. 4 vs. St. Francis 7 p.m. at Northtown Olympic Dec. 6 vs. St. Mary’s 12 p.m. at Northtown Feature Dec. 11 vs. Sweet Home 9 p.m. at Northtown Feature Dec. 13 vs. Lew-Port 3 p.m. at Northtown Olympic Dec. 14 vs. Lockport 6:45 p.m. at Harbor Center 1 Dec. 22 vs. North Tonawanda 6:45 p.m. at Hyde Park 1 Jan. 2 vs. Niagara Falls 1 p.m. at Northtown Olympic Jan. 3 vs. North Tonawanda 3:30 p.m. at Northtown Olympic Jan. 8 vs. Will. Auburn was a pretty hard pill to swallow. It was a game that really could have gone either way. They got a couple of bounces that went in their favor and put us down 2-1, and we couldn’t answer. Talking to a lot of our guys this offseason, that loss has been sitting in their memory banks and they don’t want to repeat that.” To do so, the Flames will have to replace their two leading scorers from last season, forwards Tyler Trubish and Jason Cohen. Torrillo is counting on senior forwards Dylan Cicero and Matt Steffan to not just pick up the slack in the goal-scoring department,
but also defensively. Their play in their own zone should not only make themselves better all-around hockey players, but it would also make the life of goaltender Max Battistoni, who posted an impressive goals-against average of 1.88 and four shutouts last year, even easier. “ We ’ r e a t e a m t h a t preaches defense first,” Torrillo said. “We have a simple motto: ‘If they don’t score, we can’t lose.’ We really try to take care of our own zone, and if we do that, everything else will fall into place for us.”

Everyone has the same record at this point, and what can separate us from everyone else is our work ethic. But we can’t look too far ahead. AMHERST TIGERS Tigers key in on defensive play, will lean on strong core of returners By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
Coming off of a season in which they went 2-16 under then-new head coach James Ryan, the Amherst Tigers feel as if they have a lot of room to improve in 2014-15. The biggest area of Amherst’s game that needs improvement this season is their defensive play. The Tigers didn’t perform up to Ryan’s standards in their own zone, and Ryan said if his team can cut
down on their amount of goals allowed, the Tigers will be able to compete for a playoff spot. “We flat-out need to keep the puck out of our net this year and get better defensively,” Ryan said. “We gave up way too many goals last year, but I think if our guys work hard every day and stay committed to our system, we can get a lot better.” Losing their leader, Bryan Smith, to graduation will be a blow to their roster, but Amherst plans to make up for his
departure by relying on a committee of talented players. Seniors Noah Basehart, Pete Sinagra, Rex Keoppen and Ben Battaglia will be counted on to provide leadership, while juniors Steve Vukelic and Ben Lackner and sophomores Will Grisko and Jeff Tyler will also play big roles on the ice. Basehart’s presence, in particular, should help the Tigers tremendously. The defenseman missed the previous campaign with a broken leg and his return to bolster the team’s blue

line should be a godsend for Ryan’s squad. “Basehart’s one of our best players and he should help us out, no question about it,” Ryan said. “With that being said though, hockey’s still a team game. The biggest strength of our team is our character. Our kids possess a strong work ethic, they’re coachable and they have good discipline. As long as our group continues to play a team game, the wins will come.”
Amherst has to replace top scorer Bryan Smith’s production. COACH’S OUTLOOK: “We are a young, hardworking team just trying to focus on the fundamentals. Our goal is to continually improve throughout the season so we can compete for sectionals this February.” -James Ryan KEY PLAYERS: Noah Basehart Pete Sinagra Rex Keoppen Ben Battaglia Steve Vukelic Ben Lackner Will Grisko Jeff Tyler

AMHERST/SWEET HOME
Katz will look to new leaders in 14-15 By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
Despite reaching the Section VI Federation quarterfinals last season, the Sweet Home/Amherst Katz will have some issues to work through this season. Gone from the team a r e c o r n e r s t o n e f o rwards Missy Mallon and Katelyn Koester and stalwart defenseman Maddie Grisko. Mallon and Grisko have enrolled at Buffalo State College and Rochester Institute of Technology, respectively, to play collegiate 2014-15 Fed Schedule Nov. 25 vs. Kenmore 8:15 p.m. at Lincoln Dec. 4 vs. Lancaster/Iroquois 4 p.m. at Northtown Dec. 5 vs. W. hockey. The loss of those three seniors, plus numerous other upperclassmen, will leave the Katz with a young squad. But head coach Nicola Adimey expressed confidence that the players that she currently has at her disposal will be able to get the job done. “Those three players in particular – Mallon, Koester and Grisko – are going to be sorely missed by us and will be some pretty big shoes to fill,” Adimey said. “But we do have some players in particular, like goaltender Maddie Estin, who
will be more than up to the challenge to replace some of their leadership.” Another problem that the team has been faced with is a short bench. Just 11 skaters will be on the Katz’ roster in 2014-15, and Adimey admitted that it will play a factor in the program’s season. “We’re going to have a very small team this year, with the lack of skaters on our roster,” Adimey said. “They’re going to get a lot of ice time this year, for sure, but I think they’ll be ready to step up and with hard work, we’ll continue to win games.”

WILLIAMSVILLE Despite major losses, Williamsville girls are confident heading into 14-15 By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
T h e Wi l l i a m s v i l l e girls’ federation team is brimming with optimism entering the 2014-15 campaign. Even though the team lost South defenseman Rachel Grampp, a first team All-WNY selection now at Elmira College and East goalie Theresa Moesky, a second team All-WNY at UB, an
abundance of talented players has kept the team’s chances of winning in good shape. Senior center Jordan Roetzer, senior winger Sarah Scolnick and junior winger Lexi Skibitsky (all from East) make up Williamsville’s top line. The line has been the team’s go-to offensive force for two years running, and a third year together should provide scoring punch on a nightly basis.
“They’ve played together for a while now and I think they’re one of the best line combinations in our league,” Hopkins said. “They have great chemistry together and a lot of speed. That’s a pretty potent mixture.” South senior defenseman Lily Markley will be counted on for leadership on the team’s back end and freshman Jenna Lekompski is Williamsville’s starter in net. Although Lekompski

lacks experience at the high school level, she has given Hopkins confidence that she can be leaned on as a starter. “Goaltending is so important, because you need that stopper back there who can bail you out and keep you in close games till the end,” Hopkins said. “Even though Lekompski hasn’t played at the Federation level, I know what she’s capable of doing because she’s very talented.”
Williamsville’s Farrell Garrity. COACH’S OUTLOOK: “It’s a very balanced league. Last year, we had four points separating the top five teams. We have to do the little things to win, because everyone is well-coached and talented, so work ethic and attention to detail is crucial.” -Rick Hopins KEY PLAYERS: Jordan Roetzer Sarah Scolnick Lexi Skibitsky Lily Markley Jenna Lekompski

Promoting awareness of domestic violence The Zonta Club of Kenmore will be promoting awareness of domestic violence through participation in the 16 days of activism thorough Dec. 10. A little over a year ago Zonta International took up this initiative, but this is the first year that Zonta of Kenmore has participated. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the different types of violence against women.
There will be postings on the website of the Zonta Club of Kenmore each day during the campaign providing facts about the extent of domestic violence and about available resources. This will help to get the word out that, unfortunately, the problem of domestic violence has no age, race, religious or cultural restrictions. There will also be a collection at the Kenmore Library of used cell phones which will be refurbished and sold with the proceeds being used by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence to support programs that help end violence in the home. The Zonta Club of Kenmore will sponsor a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Dec. 7 at Zebb’s Restaurant at 2875 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst and donate the proceeds to a program that fights domestic violence. To purchase tickets to this event, contact 860-7029. Zonta International is a worldwide service organization working together to advance the status of women.
