Wassail is a hot cider traditionally served in a large bowl at Christmastime.

1/2 gallon apple cider or juice 1 lemon, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches each) 12 whole allspice 12 whole cloves 6 lady apples or 1 Golden Delicious apple 1 cup applejack or apple brandy, optional 1. In 5-quart Dutch oven, combine cider, lemon slices, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks and allspice; heat to boiling over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. 2. Insert 2 cloves into each lady apple or all cloves into Golden Delicious apple. Makes about 8 cups, or 16 servings.

The Buffalo Zoo announced on Dec. 15, the name of a baby giraffe who was born in October. His name is Sampson. Sampson was born on Friday, Oct. 24, to mother, 5-year-old A.J, and father, 3-year-old Moke. Both are ÀUVW WLPH SDUHQWV The day was a special one for giraffe keeper, Vicki Hodge. Oct. 24 is her grandparents’ wedding anniversary, and also the anniversary of the death of her grandfather, whose middle name was Sampson. She named the baby in memory of him. The name announcement coincides with a series of billboards that were unveiled around the Buffalo area the same day, revealing Sampson’s name to the community. Community Papers of WNY, LLC and LAMAR Outdoor Advertising provided the billboards, “A New Baby, A New Year”. CPOWNY will roll out a year of family-friendly activities and promotions on and off Zoo grounds throughout 2015. These efforts serve not only to welcome the giraffe and promote the Zoo as an institution of family recreation, but also to highlight conservation efforts and educational offerings for the community at large. A contest to win the named, baby giraffe plush animal, is currently underway. Sharp-eyed readers need to spot all eight billboards that feature the new Buffalo Zoo baby giraffe Sampson. 7KH ÀUVW IDPLO\ IURP HDFK of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight routes and cross-street billboard locations, will receive the collectible giraffe. Outdoor billboards will be in place from Dec. 15 until Feb. 1, 2015.

A group of gay and lesbian activists sympathize with the plight of the miners, and earnestly offer their help to the perplexed workers. It’s a high-spirited Brit comedy with good intentions and the right tone. The characters are cut sympathetically, the jokes are charming, and emotional weight is earnest without being cloying. Sexual activities and questions are referenced, but it never gets raunchy. It’s a crowd pleaser with a good outlook.

The two comedians play slightly fictionalized versions of themselves. They’re friends, sort of. Well, they’re adult men who are able to stand one another’s company, keep a conversation going and compete over who can do the best vocal impressions. It beats loneliness. This time, they’re on a newspaper assignment to travel around Italy, eating fine foods and writing about it. It’s a serving of dry, ridiculous humor with wellportioned bits of reality.
