New Year can bring new financial outlook By Catherine Miller

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

If you have made getting your finances under control a goal for 2015 then join Lauber Financial Planning at Dog Ears Bookstore on Sat. January 3 at 10:30 am for their “Joy of Budgeting” support group and their “Manifesting 101” program. Everyone is welcome to this once a month session where all financial matters are discussed. “The group has addressed many aspects of successful budgeting including tools, tips and techniques, and discusses the challenges of good money management,”

stated Amy Jo Lauber, President of Lauber Financial Planning, “Many of our conversations discuss family and social relationships and their influences on our spending decisions.” Held the first Saturday of each month at alternating venues, Amy Jo Lauber seeks to bring in guest speakers and offer her own advice and insight in group session format designed to strengthen your knowledge of the importance of budgeting, and ways to set and stick to your goals to improve your financial well-being. Nancy Rizzo, a Life and Mindset Wellness Coach with a “keep it

simple” attitude, will address the January Dog Ears Bookstore attendees when she will present her “Manifesting 101” session. Rizzo adheres to a “mindset first, action second” philosophy, calling for your actions to be a response to your plans and ambitions. In the upcoming session Rizzo will call for attendees to approach their lives differently to get different results, and will focus on four simple steps to achieve their goals. She will discuss how a positive outlook and commitment can assist you in realizing your objectives, whether it be in the budgeting and financial avenues or other areas of your life.

“Budgeting can help you take control of your money and your life,” explained Lauber, “It can help you achieve your life goals, give you peace of mind, and ease stress in your life.” If financial peace of mind is part of your new year plan join Amy Jo Lauber and Nancy Rizzo on Jan 3 from 10:30 am - noon at Dog Ears Bookstore upper level, 688 Abbott Rd. The session fee is $20 and includes refreshments provided by Dog Ears. Space is limited and you can register at 430-1634 or at ajlauber@ lauberfinancialplanning. com by Dec 31.

Healthy eating in the New Year By Catherine Miller

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Well, the holiday parties are about over and it’s time to look toward your New Year’s resolutions. If, like many people, eating healthier is part of your list of goals there are ways to do it without feeling deprived. “There are plenty of ways to eat healthy with just a little bit of planning,” states Jennifer Turesky, Registered Dietician at the Women

Health and Wellness Center. Turesky offers nutritional counseling and a weight management program, and is an advocate of the “balanced plate method”. This method of balancing your plate along with your nutritional needs consists of filling half of your plate with colorful vegetables, one-fourth with lean proteins and one-fourth with your starch or grain. The result is a meal that is satisfying, healthy, and filling. While the plate method is easy to control at home, it may be

more difficult to do while dining out. “At a restaurant, ask your server to omit the starch and give you two vegetables,” Turesky suggests, “Most restaurants are very willing to accommodate this request. Also look for the healthy options on their menu and ask for dressings and condiments on the side so that you can limit them.” While eating at a restaurant may have been difficult to do in the past when you were watching your weight, there

Scott Steiner, a Chef Instructor at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, is dedicated to instilling young chefs with the tools they need to bring nutrition into restaurants they will one day serve. “The key to a satisfying meal is to prepare the food in a way that retains the greatest amount of nutrients without foregoing taste,” states Steiner, “When I make a hummus I use chicken

It’s been a long held tradition at Trocaire College that students graduating from the nursing program participate in a pinning ceremony which symbolically welcomes them into the nursing profession. The special ceremony was recently held at St. Martin of Tours Church on Dec. 17 with the pinning of the new graduating class welcoming 16 licensed practical nurses and 89 registered nurses into the field of nursing. Guests and students at the practical nurse pinning ceremony heard from guest speaker Amy Serba, Trocaire Class of ’13, and Bobbi Jo Jackson, from the Veterans Administration Hospital. The keynote speaker at the registered nurse pinning ceremony was Peggy Cieri, RN, who is presently the Unit Manager at Erie County Medical Center. Speaker Amy Serba spoke about the challenges in her life that led her on the path to nursing. After tending to long term health issues with family members she heard the calling and realized that she “needed to be a nurse”. Serba noted that although the

Elementary schools display photos

Buffalo area elementary students displayed photographs that show their creative views of the community and environment at a Nov. 11 exhibit that culminated a collaborative project with Daemen College. Images from the Seneca Babcock Children’s Photo Show were available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Seneca Babcock After School Program. During the five-week project, Daemen art education students worked with a dozen children in the after school program and instructed them on the basics of camera use. The young participants were then introduced to works by Jay Masiel, an acclaimed photographer best known for his unique perspective on capturing the environment and everyday life. “Jay Masiel wants people to see ordinary things in extraordinary ways through his images so we assisted the youngsters with using that focus when taking purposeful photographs of their surrounding environment and community,” said Dr. Mary Wolf, Daemen art education director, who oversaw the project. Guiding activities, including scavenger hunts, photographing specific items or places and taking three photos of the same thing but in different ways, were used to inspire the young

Daemen students guided the children through the process and supervised them as they took photos in the Seneca Babcock community. “With this project, Daemen students received valuable experience in planning and implementing art lessons and engaging in art advocacy,” said Wolf. “They also learned about building rapport with the elementary students, managing student behavior and offering feedback to help the young participants improve their skills.” This year’s photo project follows an initial effort conducted last year with middle school students in the Seneca Babcock area. It was a resounding success and generated such great interest from elementary students that this year’s project was

done specifically for the younger children, explained Wolf. The “Seneca Babcock Through the Eyes, Hearts and Art of Children: Part II” project was an effort of the Daemen-Seneca Babcock Partnership established by the college’s Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement. The collaborative project was funded by the college’s Student-Faculty Interdisciplinary Think Tank. Daemen student participants included Kathryn Haessner of Moravia; Rebecca Haley of East Amherst; Nicole Pauldine of Sterling; and Emily Yeager of Endwell. In addition to Wolf, Cheryl Bird, executive director of the Daemen CSCCE, was involved with the project.

The Canisius College Institute for the Study of Animal Human Relations (ISHAR) presents acclaimed filmmaker Michael Tobias, PhD, on Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Science Hall Atrium. Both events are free and open to the public. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Tobias will screen the rarely seen “director’s cut” of his critically acclaimed PBS feature documentary Mad Cowboy (2006). The film tells the story of Howard Lyman, a fourth generation cattle farmer who turned vegan. He believes that the chemicals and herbicides used in his farming poisoned his land and may have been responsible for his brother’s death at 32. The tumor on Lyman’s spine may have been the result of those same chemicals. Following a miraculous surgery, Lyman abandoned farming to assume his major role as a lobbyist in the animal rights and vegan movements. From 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Tobias will give a lecture entitled, “The Many Challenges of Coexistence.” He will present images and footage gathered from his more than 100 ecological films which date back more three decades over a tumultuous environmental history.

Penn Dixie has an inexhaustible supply of fossils and collectors may keep everything they find. Visit the Penn Dixie website www.penndixie.org to view the many varieties of fossils that can be found and collected. New and exciting fossils may still be found. Local sports Lamar takes on leading role in second varsity season By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

A year ago, William Lamar was a newcomer for the Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School boys basketball team, but it didn’t take him long to make himself at home with the Tigers. Lamar started every game last season for Timon as a freshman and helped the club to the Manhattan Cup championship game. These days, Lamar is no longer the new guy. Timon

is looking to continue its success and the standout sophomore is now one wellestablished into a leading role. And he is more than ready for that challenge. I want to be one of the leaders,” Lamar said. “I’m just going to be leading by example and doing whatever I can do to help us win.” Lamar, a Cheektowaga resident who was previously a part of Maryvale’s program, was most impressive in his first year at Timon. And even more is expected this time around. “William’s in his second year here and we’re looking for big things,” coach Joe Mihalics said. “Not many sophomores start 27 games;

well, we played 27 games last year and he started all 27. He did well, so I expect him coming off of a year like that to have even more confidence.” Lamar has been a factor early on for the Tigers — as expected. With the preseason heavily interruped by the November snowstorm, as well as Timon’s run to the MMAA finals in football, a sport that saw many Tigers on the roster, they are now ready to deliver on the hardwood. Sure enough, Timon has battled toe-to-toe against some tough non-league foes. Timon got off to a slow start, opening with a loss to public large school Williamsville North in the Cataract City Classic at Niagara Falls High

School. The Tigers also lost to Section VI standout Batavia and also lost in the annual Public vs. Private school challenge at St. Joe’ s High School, a popular event held at St. Joe’s in late December. Timon also grabbed an early season victory over a Lackawanna team many think will be among the powers amongst the small schools again this season. The MMAA is as tough as nails — just like every year. But Lamar and friends are just looking to steadily improve and then be ready to pounce in crunch time. “We’re looking pretty good,” Lamar said, “and we were just growing as a team and by the end of the year, we hope to be the best team.”

Mount Mercy Magic heads to break on undefeated streak

By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

The Mount Mercy girls basketball team has a ton of returning talent from last year’s championship club. And with contributions from all of those girls, the Magic are looking strong again Mercy approached Christmas break undefeated “It’s going great so far,” coach John Glose said after his Magic improved to 7-0 with a come-from-behind 45-40 win over Monsignor Martin rival Nichols Dec. 18. “The teamwork and the effort is

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Coach John Glose has his Mercy basketball team off to a strong start. what I love about this group. The girls are just really playing well together. It’s not one girl on the stat sheet scoring 20 or 25 a night; it’s everyone contributing offensively and

defensively.” Mercy claimed the New York State Catholic High School small school state championship for the first time in nearly a decade last season and this

season’s group has every intention of returning to that level. Senior guards Emily Sheehan and Courtney Kaczor and senior forwards Emily Benes and Maddie O’Neil as well as

junior guards Emily Gawlak and Olivia Balys are returnees from last year’s team. “We do have high-expectations against this year. The Monsignor Martin Association is extremely competitive and we’re just going to take it one game at a time and not get too far ahead of ourselves. It’s about getting better every day and sticking together.” So far, they’ve done just that. The Magic opened with a win over Springville in the third annual Mercy Heroes game on Dec. 6. Mercy followed that up with a championship in the Wilson Tip-off Tournament, collecting wins over Lew-Port and Nichols, and also collected impressive non-league wins over Section VI Class AA school Frontier and Class C championship contender Holland. The rematch against fellow

Catholic school Nichols was a tough challenge for the Magic, which scored only nine points in the first half. But they came out strong with a 36-point second half and won the ballgame. “We really struggled in the first half and give a lot of credit to Nichols’ defense,” Glose said. “We played great defense the whole game and we finally got going on offense.” Defense has been strength for the Magic all season long. Mercy did not allow more than 40 points in a game through six contests and only Nichols reached 30 against the Magic. Offensively, the Magic has been getting better and better and that teamwork is leading the way. ““We’re all working well together,” Sheehan said. “Attacking the basket, creating shots for teammates, everyone just works well together.”

Blujus progressing as player, joins Lightning’s AHL affiliate By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITIOR

Living up to expectations can be a burden on a young athlete at times. If you do as well as projected, then you were supposed to be that good. If you struggle, then you are considered in some circles to be a bust. Syracuse Crunch defenseman Dylan Blujus has the jury still out on him. A highly touted prospect when he entered high school, Blujus was considered the next big thing. A tall, physical defenseman, Blujus was an instant contributor for coach Terry Miller and the Canisius Crusaders. Even at the age of 14, there was already talk about where Blujus was going to play his college hockey — and what people though of him moving forward. “When I was young, I was looking to play college hockey, and there was a lot of pressure to getting into the right school,” explained Blujus. “When it comes down to it, you just have to enjoy the game. You are young. Just go out and play and the game will take you where it has to

take you. And that’s exactly what it did.” Funny how things have a way of working themselves out sometimes. Blujus only played one year for the Canisius hockey team before following Miller and playing for the Buffalo Regals. After a couple of years for the Regals, Blujus took his talents to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). “I don’t think it was a tough decision,” said Blujus on his decision to play juniors over attending college. “Back in the day, my advisor told there was an opportunity in Brampton. I took my chance and it was a great choice. There was a great coaching staff there. And it really worked out for me.” During his stint with Brampton and North Bay, Blujus was drafted in the second round of the National Hockey League entry draft by the Tampa Bay Lighting, where he just signed a three-year entry level contract — and was assigned to the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League (AHL). “It has been going pretty well,” stated Blujus. “Coming into Syracuse was nice,

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Dylan Blujus, a Western New York native and Tampa Bay Lightning prospect, played for the Brampton Battalion of the OHL. and I was a little familiar with the city and everything. I kind of know some of the guys from some of the NHL camps. So the transition has gone pretty well.” Getting to the AHL almost didn’t happen for Blujus as he suffered a knee injury while

playing for North Bay. It was the first major injury of his young career. It was one he had to fight back from. Blujus did, and led all defenseman last year with 26 assists to go along with his four goals. “Luckily through my

hockey career I have been healthy.” said Blujus. “It could have been a lot worse. I was only out about month. I think coming back from the injury I was a little slow, because it never happened to me before. But after a lit bit, I just started to play my game.

And, that helped me out too.” Now that he is one step away from the NHL, Blujus knows he has a lot to work on if he wants to get to the next level. He uses Patrick Kane, Tim Kennedy and other Western New Yorkers that have gone on to play in the NHL as examples. “Some of the differences are you are playing against stronger, bigger, faster players,” explained Blujus. “There is a lot let time on the ice. There is a lot less open ice. It was tough in the beginning, but I am getting used to it now. And I’m starting to play well. It’s a long process, but I know I have to work on a lot things.” He also holds his high school and Regals coach Miller in high regards. Miller, known around WNY as an intense coach, demanded a lot from Blujus and the respect of the players on those teams. And, in the end, it paid off. “I really enjoyed him as a coach,” stated Blujus. “He was definitely a big contributor in my progression in hockey.” Blujus has the tools to make it to the NHL. He just needs to play his game and make the right choices on the ice.

for annual holiday drive

The holiday season is a time for communities to come together. For Erie Community College’s community, it’s a time to lift up fellow students pursuing a better future one class at a time. In a drive that was extended because of November’s “Winter Storm Knife,” ECC administration, faculty and students collaborated with the college’s Board of Trustees to collect and package offerings throughout their three campuses for their annual President’s Holiday Food Drive, which culminated at Williamsville’s North Campus on December 12. The student-led collection of non-perishable food items and/ or gift cards—which is now in its seventh year—will aid over 137 families within the college’s community, comprised of working students and their families who need an extra hand this holiday season. ECC President Jack Quinn and his staff have organized these efforts every year since he arrived at ECC in 2008. According to Quinn, it’s an effort that’s indicative of the altruism evident throughout the community

college’s campuses. “This drive is a true reflection of the holiday hearts within our hallways,” said Quinn. “We have our entire ECC family joining to give what they can to help our students. That’s school spirit, and it’s alive and well around here all year, but especially at this time of year.” Donations have been forthcoming since before Thanksgiving. The final offerings collected at North Campus—which consisted of more than 35 gift cards and enough food donations to fill over one hundred holiday care packages—will be distributed to families through ECC’s Student Services Office before Christmas. And since 2010, ECC’s Student Government Association (SGA) has teamed a separate toy drive with the President’s Office drive to form a collective initiative even more able to aid ECC students fraught with economic hardships. “The selfless nature of our college’s community has never ceased to amaze me,” said Quinn. “I’m not only thankful, but humbled to be a part of it.”

Canalside Ice Rink opening thrills vendors By Catherine Miller

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

It was more than just iceskating lovers that were pleased with the opening of the new Canalside Ice Rink. The local merchants that surrounded the rink during opening weekend were equally pleased with the outdoor venue bringing crowds to downtown Buffalo during the holiday season. “We came down to be part of the experience,” stated Eric Dacey, coowner of Buffalo Adore Gift Shop that presently has a shop on Abbott Rd and at the Market Arcade – yet didn’t want

to miss out on the opening of the Canalside Rink event, “We love all of the changes in Buffalo and what’s happening on the waterfront. We are inspired by all that is going on and we want to be a part of it.” Buffalo Adore was not the only gift shop business that brought wares from local artists to the rink’s edge on opening night. Cortney Morrison-Taylor and Hayley Janecki, coowners of Ro Home Shop on Elmwood Ave we excited to bring their home goods to the vendor’s hut, with sprays of decorative evergreen, holiday wreaths and handmade roving angels on display. While “mixed-

use” has become a commonplace term in Buffalo with regards to property ownership, it has become equally popular with Buffalo events. HarborCenter Ice Rink’s saw hundreds of ice skaters, as well as many that were there to enjoy live music, and shop their local vendors and enjoy the walking paths. The ice rink will be home to skaters as well as ice bikes and broom ball players – and with plenty of room. The 33,000 sq. foot rink is the largest in the state and is triple the size of Rockefeller Center. In addition to gift shopping visitors could purchase hot cocoa, warm nuts, craft

beer and pretzels. Previously the site of the Memorial Auditorium, the land was originally the area of a large trade center in Buffalo during its growth in the 1800s. Now again the destination for residents and visitors, the site is expected to become a year-round destination for dining and entertainment purposes. If you are having trouble keeping up on all that is new and different at Canalside – you are likely in good company. With the fast-paced changes and developments the easiest way to find the fun at the waterfront is by viewing www.canalsidebuffalo. com. Or – stop down to check out the Canalside ice rink at the foot of Main Street. Admission to the rink is $5 for adults, with discounts for children and $3 skate rental available.

Ro Home Shop owners Cortney Morrison-Taylor and Hayley Janecki check out the Canalside Ice Rink as they get ready for the rink’s opening day.
